rom the foliage extending a tropical welcome on the way in to the hot tub nestled under the lanai in the far reaches of the backyard, the sweet bungalow at 409 Donze Avenue in downtown Santa Barbara feels like a vacation throughout. I visited on a recent Sunday and was transported, yet I felt immediately at home. It starts with the view from the street. Donze Avenue is located in the heart of town, near the intersection of Laguna and Anapamu streets. It’s one of the rare and coveted one-block streets located in the middle of everything yet is just enough out of the way to avoid the traffic and bustle of Santa Barbara’s main thoroughfares. Standing on the street in front of the house, the view down the gently sloping lane is straight to the foothills and the purple mountains beyond, set against the bright blue sky. The scene could be the backdrop for a “Wish you were here” postcard, showing off our quintessential American Riviera vista. The house itself is a wood-sided bungalow, which is painted a happy turquoise color, elevated up off the street, surrounded by a low wall, and framed by palms and greenery. Set sideways on its lot, it’s actually the side of the house that first greets visitors. Up a short flight of steps on the

left, a walkway leads to the cozy front porch. This layout automatically creates a sense of privacy, shielding the face of the home from the street. The front door opens into a light, bright great room with living, dining, and kitchen areas all combined into one main living space which forms the heart of this home. One bedroom lies to the left and opens through a set of French doors directly onto the backyard. Glimpsing a swath of bright green with outbuildings beyond, I couldn’t help but explore outside before I even toured the house itself. As I stepped into the backyard, I had a sense of déjà vu. The secluded backyard, though close to its neighbors, feels completely private, like a secret garden in the middle of town. It reminded me of the first time I stepped foot in what was to become my own backyard. This one stands apart, however, with amenities galore, including a covered patio, a hot tub, fruit trees, a putting green, an outdoor dining

area, and the perfect workshop. This auxiliary workshop space is waiting to be turned into a new owner’s man cave, she shed, or whatever strikes their fancy. It currently has a massive surfboard rack mounted on one wall, which adds to the vacation vibe. Back inside, I took a better look at the great room and saw pleasant surprises at every turn. The kitchen has beautiful granite counters and upgraded fixtures and appliances. An unexpected nook in the kitchen serves as a desk or mini-office, with an adjacent back door onto the outdoor dining patio. A breakfast bar separates the kitchen from the living area and adds additional dining or prep space. On the far side of the house, two bedrooms share a bath in between them, while the master — which I had walked straight through upon my first sight of the backyard — has an en-suite bath. The whole home enjoys wood floors, and a couple of stylish ceiling fans serve a practical purpose as well as add to the tropical style. I had to take one more walk around the backyard. Upon a second look, I realized that I had initially been so caught up in the details that I missed its prime attraction. The gorgeous mountain views I had ogled from the street are even more magnificent when viewed from the privacy of this backyard. Every home should feel like a sanctuary, and this house certainly does. So whether this adorable bungalow is slated to be a vacation hideaway or a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is ready for a new owner and eager to be a welcoming haven.

Grants $1 Million to Nonprofits

n the Monday before Thanksgiving at the Biltmore’s Coral Casino, Montecito Bank & Trust (MB&T) hosted one of the most heartwarming events of the year —its annual Community Dividends Awards Luncheon. Through this awards program, the bank gives away $1 million to Santa Barbara and Ventura county nonprofits and invites the recipients to the luncheon to express its thanks for their important work. Representatives from this year’s 188 grant recipients enjoyed networking and socializing with each other, bank associates, and boardmembers during an hour-long reception on the idyllic La Pacifica Terrace. Then guests adjourned to the ballroom for a gourmet three-course Thanksgiving meal. Chair and CEO Janet Garufis welcomed and thanked the nonprofits for the important work that they do, including their collaborative efforts in the aftermath of the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow. She praised the bank’s associates for their spirit of collaboration and support of one another and the community, noting the spirit of community that sets community banks apart from other financial institutions. Founder Michael Towbes was widely known for his strong belief in the importance of giving back to the community, which he put into practice in myriad ways. Garufis paid tribute to him, noting how his legacy lives on in this wonderful tradition of giving and friendship that he created. She remarked on how Towbes would use the podium to encourage others to give back in meaningful ways and how carrying on his legacy is an honor and a privilege. She related how she knows she speaks for everyone at MB&T when she says that “we will continue to do our very best to carry on his vision, even if nobody is looking, and never let him down.” In selecting grantees, the bank continues Towbes’s focus on youth and education, the arts, health, and social services. Grants typically range from $2,500 to $10,000. Over the past 16 years, MB&T has given away $16 million through this generous program. During the morning of the luncheon each of the past few years, MB&T has hosted a seminar on a topic

that organizations have indicated they want to learn about, and this year was on advocacy. According to Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Executive Director Steve Windhager, the gift and networking are great, but so too are these seminars, which he sees as a great opportunity for nonprofit leaders to learn from a panel of experts about business topics relevant to their organizations. MB&T’s extraordinary generosity goes beyond the Community Dividends program. It gives away another $300,000 annually through other avenues, including its Anniversary Grants program, in which employees select the grantees. MB&T also hosts educational forums for nonprofits, seniors, and businesses on financial literacy, scams, and cybersecurity. Its associates volunteer in a multitude of capacities, logging more than 5,100 hours annually. Founded in 1975, MB&T has more than $1.4 billion in assets and 13 offices in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties offering an array of services for businesses and consumers. In 2017, it was named the Bank of the Year by Western Independent Bankers and in 2018 was named the #2 Best Bank to Work For by American Banker magazine.

How did Giffin & Crane become the builder of this project? I was fortunate enough to work with

Giffin & Crane on a project I was designing for a client nearby. It was a success, and I

enjoyed working with G&C enough to contact them when I decided to do the remodel on my place. What about Jane Snyder and Mosaic Architects? Jane

actually did a home for me in Vail, Colorado, and also the project [I mentioned above]. When my remodel came up, I reached out again. Giffin & Crane and Jane Snyder make a good team. I find it easy to feed my ideas to Jane, and she turns them into reality, with G&C to complete the circle.

COME TOGETHER: Before an extensive remodel by a team of designers and builders, this two-bedroom cottage was dated and suffering from structural neglect. What was it that made you decide it needed work, and what was the basic to-do list? The house had good

bones, and it’s a great location. It was a onelevel dwelling with north- and south-facing windows — perfect light for me. But it needed to be updated. The house was dated, and basic maintenance had been somewhat neglected. We found foundation issues not meeting code; drainage was an issue; utility lines needed to be brought up to code. Along with all the design ideas I had in mind, the challenges became significant. But I had immediately seen the potential to turn this home into a little jewel. Mission accomplished.

What sort of customer service did G&C bring to the table?

Geoff Crane is a reliable and talented person to work with. I am very specific with my input — sometimes to a fault! — and working with me can be a challenge. The team and I were very successful in completing a project we all can be proud of. There were structural issues with this home and resolving them was a difficult task to overcome. But we were quite successful. How would you describe the extent of the remodel? It

was extensive. What I thought was going to be a somewhat simple remodel turned into a full-blown redo from top to bottom.

The timeframe must have gotten pushed out a bit.

The timeframe changed as the [amount of required] work changed. The quality of

workmanship G&C brings to the table really shows in the finished project. This takes time to accomplish, and had we not had the structural issues, I do think we would have had this project completed on time. The fun part of the project — of any building project, really — is in the details, and Giffin & Crane knows how to execute the details. Their workmanship is impeccable. Anything you’d like to add? I originally planned

to make this a part-time residence. I can honestly say it has become more and more difficult to leave the comfort of this home. It is a joy to live here.
