et’s be honest about the story we tell ourselves. “I work best under pressure.” Or “It always gets done somehow.” Sound familiar? Here’s the thing: That story is actually the whole problem. This month we are pulling together some ideas from Mel Robbins’s The 5 Second Rule, Stanford researcher BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits, and a refreshingly blunt new book from producerturned-author Benny Blanco to figure out why we keep doing this to ourselves, and how to actually stop.
WHY “PULLING IT OFF” IS ACTUALLY THE TRAP Here’s the part nobody wants to hear: When you procrastinate and still manage to crank out the report, nail the presentation, or pack your bags at midnight before an early flight, your brain isn’t learning a lesson. It’s collecting a reward. Researchers at Ohio State’s Dennis Learning Center found that procrastination tends to get “reinforced by success after last-minute cramming, thus strengthening the [habit]” instead of weakening it. Psychology Today says it even more directly: “When success is achieved, the procrastination belief is reinforced, often increasing the frequency of similar future deferral behaviors.” There’s a chemical hook here too. Waiting until the last second doesn’t just delay the task; it delays the anxiety, and then finishing releases this huge wave of relief. That relief feels amazing, and it has basically nothing to do with the quality of what you actually made. One neuroscience breakdown notes that “the removal of an aversive event can be reinforcing,” which means every time relief shows up right on cue, your brain quietly files away “cutting it close = works out fine.” It feels like you’re beating the system. You’re not. You’re just on a streak, and streaks end, usually at the worst possible moment: a missed flight, a pitch you fumbled, a promise you broke.
FIVE WAYS TO ACTUALLY BREAK THE CYCLE (1) Count backward before your brain talks you out of it. Mel Robbins built her whole 5 Second Rule around one idea: The second you feel the urge to do the thing you’ve been avoiding, you’ve got about five seconds before your brain starts making excuses. So, count it down: “Five, four, three, two, one” and physically move. Stand up. Open the laptop. Dial the number. It sounds almost too simple, but it interrupts the hesitation before it turns into a whole internal debate. Not doing it builds our “hesitation habit,” which is not the kind of habit we want to build. (2) Make the task embarrassingly small. BJ Fogg’s whole Tiny Habits framework comes down to one formula: B = MAP. Behavior happens when Motivation + Ability + a Prompt all line up. Most of the time, we stall out because the task feels huge, which tanks our “Ability.” His fix? Shrink the first step down to something that takes less than 30 seconds. Write one sentence. Open the file. That’s it. (3) Tie it to something you already do without thinking. Fogg also talks about “anchor moments,” hooking your new tiny habit onto a routine you already have on autopilot. Something like, “After I pour my coffee, I open the file I’ve been dodging.” Because the anchor already happens like clockwork, you don’t need to rely on willpower or remembering. It just happens. Now let’s take steps 1, 2, and 3 and apply it to a realworld problem. Steve loves hot showers after his morning cold plunge. (Who wouldn’t?) He wasn’t so great about turning on the fan, and the bathroom would get steamed up. Behavior change: Turn on the bathroom fan. Motivation was high: happy wife, happy life. Ability was high: All he has to do is turn a knob. His prompt: Hang up his shower towel in a weird way so that when he went into the shower, he would notice the towel and turn the fan on. Then he did one thing that James Clear talks about in Atomic Habits: He celebrates! A quick fist pump provides
the vital “reward” phase in the habit loop, making an action feel immediately satisfying so that your brain wants to repeat it. ABC: A: Anchor the new habit to something you already do; in this case, showering. B: Do the new behavior. C = Celebrate! Steve has actually said that there are times he is showering and he thinks to himself, “Shoot, did I forget to turn on the fan? Nope, I remember that fist pump!” Oh, and by the way, going back to the cold plunge — Steve loves to use the 5 Second Rule to get in! (4) Shut up. Literally. In his new book, F*ck Failure, Benny Blanco’s rule number one is exactly this. Stop narrating all the reasons you can’t get something done. “You’re sitting there all day, and you’re talking about how you can’t do something … just shut up and come up with an idea,” he said on Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist. All that talking isn’t planning. It’s procrastination in disguise. (5) Take away your own reward for waiting. Since relief is what’s actually reinforcing the habit, build something into your process that removes it. Set an earlier fake deadline. Ask a colleague to check in on your progress midweek. Just start a day earlier than you think you need to. If relief never shows up dramatically at the eleventh hour, your brain stops believing the eleventh hour is a safe place to live.
THE BOTTOM LINE Every time you procrastinate and still somehow pull it off, you’re not proving that you work well under pressure. You’re training yourself to need the pressure. And that’s a habit that eventually catches up with you. The fix isn’t gritting your teeth harder on deadline day; it’s smaller, faster interruptions earlier in the process: a five-second countdown, a task shrunk down to nothing, a habit anchored to something automatic, and, as Blanco would say, a lot less talking about why you can’t. Interrupt the pattern before the relief becomes the reward, and you’ll break the habit that’s quietly setting you up for your next crisis.

Tails of Hope Raises Life-Saving Funds for Shelter Animals
O
n September 20, the S.B. County Animal Care Foundation hosted its Tails of Hope event to raise muchneeded funds for the shelter animals at S.B. County Animal Services, the county agency that it supports. Actor Bo Derek was again emceeing the program and was joined this year on stage by Shorty Rossi (Animal Planet’s Pit Boss and Shorty’s Rescue). Held at Rancho La Patera and Stow House, the event began with a reception for the 300 guests on the spacious lawn, featuring booths of many animal-serving nonprofits, which showed the collaborative approach of those serving our four-legged friends. County Animal Services volunteers circulated through the venue with rescue dogs, which instigated some adoptions and added playfulness to the event. As the county agency charged with picking up strays and abused and neglected dogs — in addition to its licensing and enforcement duties — Animal Services receives county funding for shelter animals, but some of the medical and other needs of the animals would go unmet if it weren’t for the S.B. County Animal Care Foundation. Funding from the Foundation goes largely to the diagnostics and medical treatment of the most serious cases, so that all shelter animals can get to a state where they are adoptable. After the reception, guests were seated under a big tent and welcomed by Derek and Rossi, who both expressed deep gratitude to the Foundation and County Animal Services (CAS). Derek noted that “so far,” she and her husband, John Corbett, have adopted two dogs from CAS. She also conveyed Corbett’s regrets that a film engagement prevented him from co-emceeing the event. CAS Director Sarah Aguilar shared her gratitude to the Foundation, as did Supervisor Joan Hartmann, who also acknowledged the nearly dozen politicians and their representatives in attendance. Foundation Cofounder and President Linda Greco poignantly conveyed the impact of donations: “When animals arrive at our county shelters injured, sick, abandoned, or simply out of options, your support provides the lifesaving resources that literally change an animal’s story from ‘What happens to me now?’ to ‘I’m going home.’ ”
In the past year, in addition to medical services, the Foundation has funded new play yards at the Santa Barbara shelter, DIY microchip scanning stations in various locations, and the restart of County Animal Service’s public wellness and spay/neuter clinics. It has also supported Animal Services’ foster program and an enrichment coordinator for shelter dogs. Thanks to the inaugural Tails of Hope event last year, it was able to increase its funding last year to nearly $250,000 and in this first half of this year has provided another $165,000. County Animal Services submits funding requests, with funds distributed pursuant to the board’s vote. Funding priorities going forward, in addition to the core focus on medical services, include fostering and spay/neuter programs, the remodel of the Lompoc shelter, and the establishment of a vet clinic in South County. Greco and her board receive no compensation and work out of their homes; they have hired only a couple of part-time contractors, keeping expenses minimal. In an interview, Greco explained that many of the animals that come to County Animal Services arrive stressed, frightened, and in need of immediate medical care. For the past 24 years, the Foundation’s partnership with the County has helped transform high euthanasia numbers into high live-release numbers “by providing resources that allow animals who might otherwise be considered unadaptable to receive treatment, heal, become adoptable, and find forever homes.” In 2025, S.B. County Animal Services took in 4,264 stray animals, including 2,132 stray dogs and 1,799 stray cats. Its wildly successful adoption program resulted in 1,011 dogs and 1,586 cats being adopted. The vast majority of the remainder were transferred to partner entities. The hiring of a staff veterinarian, Thomas Schaefer, DVM, in June 2025 has been transformative for County Animal Services, according to Aguilar. It has enabled them to expand services in house, thereby reducing its reliance on outside clinics and lowering per-animal medical costs. So far this year, it has provided approximately 4,000 exams, 1,400 surgeries, and 7,000 vaccines. Having Schaefer on staff “has strengthened our ability to treat animals sooner, make timely medical decisions, support foster placement,

and create more pathways to positive outcomes,” Aguilar related. It’s live release rate stands at 92-94 percent. County Animal Services’ programs for alternative housing continue to expand. Last year, it had 6,200 foster placements and 3,450 doggy day trips. It works with partner organizations on various programs to assist pet owners keep their pets so they don’t end up in the shelter system. Last year, the Pet Pantry — a partnership with CARE4Paws, CAPA (Companion Animal Placement Assistance) and others — distributed more than 83,000 pounds of pet food. With the simple message that the more donations the Foundation receives, the more abused, neglected, and stray animals that can be saved, guests bid up live and silent auction items, which together with sponsorships and ticket sales, raised about $250,000 net to help animals in need.

What Does an Advertised Interest Rate Actually Mean?

Q: Marsha, my wife and I just started our home purchasing
process. I know we need to get preapproved for a mortgage loan. When I ask loan agents the rate I can expect, they hesitate to give me a quote. Is this typical? Why can’t I receive a direct answer?
A: Honest lenders answer will your question “What will
my interest rate be?” with “I need more information about you and your situation.” They are not trying to draw you in with an unrealistic quote. The problem is there are so many unrealistic interest rates advertised that the public is rightly confused. The daily quoted interest rate is a general assessment of our country’s current financial environment and not the rate that most people will get.
Before a mortgage lender can arrive at a realistic interest amount that you’ll use for a down payment. For example, rate for you specifically, there are three important numbers if the home appraises for $500,000 and you will put down that they need to know about you and the 20 percent, or $100,000, then your loan will be for $400,000.
