Picking Perfect Art
The title of this article is intended to be a bit of a contradiction: Art, as a foundational principle, is never perfect. I often remind clients that art is not a finishing touch it’s a quiet foundation. The right pieces don’t just decorate a space; they give it soul, narrative, and emotional weight. Building an art collection for everyday living is less about acquiring impressive objects and more about cultivating a personal dialogue between your home and your life. It’s a process that unfolds slowly, guided by instinct, curiosity, and patience.
First and Foremost
The first and most important principle: Collect what you truly love. Not what feels trendy, not what you think you should own, and certainly not what others might find impressive. Art is deeply personal. It is something you live
with every day. Passing it in hallways, seeing it in morning light, noticing it in quiet moments. If a piece doesn’t move you in some way, it won’t grow on you over time. In fact, the opposite tends to happen. What initially feels like a “safe” or “practical” choice quickly becomes invisible and uninspiring.
When you encounter a piece that resonates, pay attention to why. I will never forget when I found a specific piece of art at an antique store. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but it stopped my gait immediately. I loved the colors and frame, and I thought it was so beautiful. It was signed by the artist, and I bought it immediately. When I got home and flipped it over, there was additional writing on the back listing where it was painted and what year. I laughed as I realized it was painted in one of my favorite beach towns just down the coast in the 1960s. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to it, and it’s one of my favorite pieces to date. Sometimes, it’s a sketch you find for next to nothing, when you’re not even looking for it. And suddenly, taking it home and framing it brings more joy than you ever thought it would. This is how the best and most personal collections are built over time. Trust yourself and what you love.
Things to Look For
That said, there are practical considerations worth keeping in mind, especially if you want your collection to hold long-term value, both emotionally and materially. Look for works that are signed and dated by the artist. This small detail adds a layer of authenticity and provenance. It doesn’t need to be from a famous artist to be meaningful or valuable, but having the artist’s signature and date offers an important sense of individuality and presence.
Make sure to frequent antique stores and estate sales. I always find the best hidden gems buried in the back. Originality matters: These pieces carry the artist’s hand, their process, and their imperfections, which are often what make them compelling.
Scale and placement should be considered, but not overthought. A common mistake is buying art to “fit” a specific
wall. Instead, buy art because you love it, then find a place for it. Some of the most dynamic interiors are created by layering pieces over time, leaning artwork on shelves, clustering smaller works in unexpected groupings, and frequently rotating pieces. Your home should feel alive, not fixed.
by Laura Gransberry
Be Patient
Equally important is understanding that building an art collection is not a race. It takes time: years, often decades, to develop a collection that feels rich and intentional. There will be periods where you acquire nothing, and others where you discover multiple pieces in quick succession. Both are part of the rhythm. Patience allows your taste to evolve and prevents impulsive decisions that you might later regret.
Budget is, of course, a reality, but it shouldn’t be a barrier. Start where you are. Smaller works or pieces from emerging artists can be incredibly affordable and often become the most cherished items in a collection. As your confidence grows, you may choose to invest in larger or more established works, but there is no hierarchy that dictates what makes a piece worthy.
Final Thoughts
Remember that your art collection should reflect your life, not just your aesthetic. Travel, personal milestones, relationships, and even spontaneous moments can all influence what you bring into your home. A piece purchased on a memorable trip or discovered unexpectedly can carry more meaning than something acquired intentionally. It’s one of the few times in life where less planning and more impulse is actually a good thing.
In the end, sourcing and building an art collection is an act of storytelling. Each piece becomes a chapter. When approached with intention, curiosity, and patience, your collection will not only enhance your interiors, but it will also quietly define them. In the end, buy what you love, and the rest will take care of itself.

Women’s Fund Awards an Eye-Popping $1.275 Million to 10 Nonprofits
On May 13, the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara awarded a record, eye-popping $1.275 million to 10 local nonprofits. In line with the mission of this 1,451-member collective giving circle, the grants targeted critical needs of women, children, and families in south Santa Barbara County.
At the annual Celebration of Grants event at the Lobero Theatre, the more than 500 guests enjoyed an outdoor reception before adjourning to the theater for the program. Grant recipients were announced and nonprofit recipients shared stories demonstrating the huge impact the funding will have on those they serve. Board Chair Carolyn Jabs related that hearing directly from the nonprofit leaders is one of the best parts of being a Women’s Fund member. Some of the grants were for gap funding, whose need arose from recent and in some cases, devastating, government funding cuts.
Grant recipients were:
• AHA Attitude, Harmony, Achievement: $150,000 (over two years) for in-school programs to help teens build emotional management, deep listening, and social skills.
• Angels Foster Care: $60,000 for a hybrid SUV to transport foster children to medical appointments, court hearings, and family visitations.
• Community Partners in Caring: $62,500 for staffing to train volunteers to transport and socialize with seniors and adults with disabilities.
• Family Service Agency: $200,000 (over two years) for a school therapist to provide mental health screenings, crisis response, and counseling to junior high and high school students.
• Friendship Adult Day Care Center: $82,500 for staff to transport members with dementia.
• Mission Scholars: $150,000 (over two years) for staff to provide mentorship, career coaching, and leadership workshops for low-income first-generation students.
• Planned Parenthood California Central Coast: $200,000 (over two years) to keep open its health center, which provides reproductive care.
• Santa Barbara Meals on Wheels: $100,000 (over two years) for its food delivery and wellness check services for homebound seniors.
• Santa Barbara Rescue Mission: $150,000 to remodel a storage space into an eight-bed dormitory for stabilization and trauma-informed care for women awaiting addiction treatment.
• Veggie Rescue: $120,000 for a refrigerated truck to transport surplus fresh and packaged food to its nonprofit partners.
A new Small Grant Pilot Program, which was seeded with $100,000, was announced. Vice Chair Lauren Trujillo explained that this program will make $10,000 and $25,000 operating support grants to nonprofits with annual revenues under $500,000. Unlike its traditional grant program, this program will accept applications. Details will be provided next month.
The Women’s Fund is funded by the pooled donations of its members. Known for the rigorousness of its work, the Research Committee labors for several months to produce a ballot of grantee options on which members vote.
Over the year, site visits to grant recipient organizations and educational forums enable members to gain more knowledge about community needs and the vital role nonprofits play in meeting those needs. In the last year, seven forums have been held, featuring grant recipients, clients, and subject matter experts, who collectively provide illuminating insights.
Expenses are kept low so 91 percent of funds raised go to the grants and another 4 percent to the educational programming. Membership is open to any woman at the individual level ($2,750 or more) or group level ($2,750 or more collectively from a group of any size). The Membership Committee helps prospective members find a compatible group or form their own group. Jabs shared that most of the 174 groups meet to discuss the ballot, and she has been struck by how much she learns in these meetings from other women sharing their experiences and perspectives. Making a donation is the only requirement for membership, but many women choose to participate by joining
one or more committees that together enable this highly impactful organization to function. Once again, this year, these bright, dedicated women delivered on their motto of “changing lives together.”

“There’s more and more information available online all the time – it’s a great time to be a home history hunter!” says Betsy.
Audience members are invited to bring questions about their home for Betsy to tackle in real time. Betsy will also share links to websites with useful information.

Hey, Mom! Whose Keys Are These?
Coming off the heels of Mother’s Day has reminded me of how many women do not feel they can purchase property on their own. I’ve heard stories about feeling safer with another income coming in, feeling that it’s “just too much to take on solo,” and feeling, very simply, the idea that owning property is something you do when you have a partner, not on your own.
Of course, there are still reasons why these myths exist. Historically, property passed down through the male side of lineage. As you probably know, it wasn’t until the mid-1970s that women were allowed to have a checking account on their own, much less be able to obtain credit without the permission of their nearest male relative.
The American dream of a white picket fence, lyrically portrayed in the song “Our
House,” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, does not invoke visuals of a single ownership. And yet, there is the traditional stance that women are the “nesters” of our species.
The truth lies in the fact that one’s gender should be irrelevant to one’s homeownership goals. The reason I am still in lending after all these years, and all the ups and downs of the market, is that homeownership provides one of the best ways to grow wealth in this country as well as giving much-needed housing security. These are facts based on data, not whims.
For example, the National Association of Realtors said that, in 2025:
• Single women made up 21 percent of all buyers, whereas single men were at 9 percent.
• A record 20+ million single women own

homes nationwide (vs. ~14 million single men).
• First-time single women buyers: median income $73,000 (now ahead of single men at $66,400).
• Median age of single female homebuyers/ homeowners: ~57-60 (nearly identical to single men). First-time single women buyers are median age 40.
• Single women now out-own single men in 57 percent of U.S. metros and 47 of 50 states.
Is it easier to qualify for more property with dual incomes? Absolutely. Should everyone have their own sounding board for financial decisions, like a personal board of directors? You bet! Does the type of property you need to own change based on how many folks are living with you? Most certainly. Yet if single women’s buyer share of homeownership has roughly doubled since 1981, and first-time share more than doubled since 1985, then I dare to say that the story is changing.
Purchasing property is actually a balance of math and emotion. It is something that we each process individually, no matter where we come from, our financial circumstances, or our gender. The financial plan on which you embark on should be based on your current snapshot in time, past decisions,
by Austin Lampson
and future goals. The property that you’re taking on should work best within your fiveyear vision. And we must all know that this insight changes just as the world turns.
What I want you to hear is this: Your gender, your age, and your marital status are all irrelevant when it comes to starting on the path of homeownership. The most important thing that you do is take the first step. Build your own personal board of directors, with professionals who will ask questions to challenge you, invoke curiosity in you, offer solutions to support you, and are allies to you in an ever-changing process. Because everybody deserves to build wealth and have housing security, creating your own vision of “Our House.” Light your own fire, and place flowers in your own vase, and may the walls around you reinforce your ability and refine your haven.
