Holiday Styling Tips

A

lthough I’m having a difficult time wrapping my head around the fact that it’s already Thanksgiving, clearly some of my friends and clients are not. Twinkle lights, holiday figurines, and Christmas trees are THE STYLE SPECIALIST already on display in their homes, and, thinking back to last year, I guess I’m not surprised. In 2020, we dined with family over Zoom and forfeited gatherings, so it’s easy to understand why some have a jumpstart on their holiday decorating this year. I’ll admit that I’m an advocate of the “less is more in holiday décor” approach, but I do by Christine S. Cowles like to find new ways to display seasonal decorations. So, in case you’re in need of inspiration to deck your halls, I’ve gathered my favorite holiday styling tips: 1. Add organic accessories. According

to online marketplace Etsy, searches for “woodland creature ornaments” are up 33 percent this year over the same period last year! Who knew? If a brightly colored palette isn’t your thing, go for an organic look by adding natural elements to your traditional décor. Incorporating items such as plant-patterned menorahs, dried foliage, and driftwood can help add an earthy yet modern vibe to your holiday home.

2. Hang greenery in unexpected places. Okay, so holiday greenery isn’t exactly novel décor, but hanging wreaths and garlands in unexpected places can help bring a refreshed look. If you always hang a piece of garland on the banister, drape it over a doorframe or hang it on a mirror instead. I’ve also seen greenery draped on a kitchen hood, but this screams of a fire hazard to me (so please don’t do it). 3. Use several types of garlands. When it comes to

garland, the more the merrier, I say! Using several different types of garland adds depth and dimension, which adds interest and makes your holiday look uniquely yours. I love mixing garlands of eucalyptus leaves with strings of natural paper flowers for an organic vibe. 4. Pair multiples to make a statement. A great way to decorate your

mantle or add some holiday cheer to your entry table is by using multiples of the same piece grouped together. I like to hang multiple versions of the same wreath — one in every window at the front of the home. When grouping multiples of the same item, like figurines, be sure to vary in size for interest (one smaller item and one larger item side by side). 5. Swap holiday décor with a friend. If sitting at home for the better part of the past two years has taught most of us anything, it’s that we have too much stuff.

Please know that I’m not advocating for you to rush out and buy more holiday décor! Instead, take a box of your decorations to a friend’s house and borrow some of theirs. It will feel like you’ve got a whole new holiday look for free!

GOING GREEN rain. Buildings can block or enhance wind speeds depending on height, bulk, spacing, and overall community design. Doucet uses off-the-shelf components to control cost. His prototype 8x25 wall could provide the electricity for most homes. Large wind turbines produce a lot of renewable energy, but optimum siting can be tricky —finding areas of consistent, strong winds while avoiding major bird, bat, and insect flyways. A big boost in wildlife conservation has been the recent use of the Rogue Detection Team to gather critical data on key plant and wildlife species. As applied to turbine fields, these trained dogs and their handlers can locate 96 percent of dead birds and bats, compared to a human detection rate of just 6 percent. Understanding the magnitude of bird and bat deaths from wind generation leads to better measures to protect these species. For turbines already erected, this would mean installing ultrasonic white-noise machines to deter bats or decreasing turbine speed during peak migration season. For new wind developments, this data can provide vital information to make wind farms as ecologically friendly as possible and help avoid regions where birds and bats are particularly vulnerable to wind operations.

Innovations in Generating Clean Energy Have Many Benefits

O

ur image of wind turbines is huge blades mounted atop stanchions either offshore or in canyons or open fields. Because of size, these wind generators are typically located far from urban centers. Recently, however, Joe Doucet, a designer and inventor, has put art and technology

together to create a wall capable of generating considerable clean power in urban settings. The wall is a grid of square panes, each designed to spin in wind and feed the generated mechanical energy into a mini generator. As we know, cities have considerable wind, but it is more variable and sporadic than wind patterns in more open ter-

Message From the President

Another strategy to increase renewable energy, although still only in the proposal stage, is to cover some of California’s 4,000 miles of water canals that transport by Dennis Allen large amounts of water from northern parts of the state to the most populated southern parts. University of California researchers estimate that one to 2 percent of all water being carried in these canals is lost to evaporation. Covering canals with solar panels would save enough water to meet the residential needs of two million people while generating 13 gigawatts of clean energy. Moreover, the water flowing beneath the panels would cool them during hot weather, thereby boosting their output by 3 percent. Installing arrays of panels over the canals would avoid converting valuable farmland and natural habitat to future solar farms, thus protecting delicate ecosystems and vital food production. These are among many new ideas and strategies to enhance wildlife conservation, increase clean energy generation, mitigate drought, and make better use of land. Dennis Allen is chair of Allen Construction, an employee-owned company committed to building and operating sustainably. He also serves as chair of the Dean’s Council at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UCSB and as a boardmember of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

Unaccompanied, Undocumented Minors Receive Much-Needed Support

A

s discussed in last week’s column, MICOP (Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project) provides invaluable services to about 15,000 Indigenous residents from its offices in Santa Maria and Oxnard. This column delves into one program, Opportunities for Youth (OFY), a state-funded pilot program to assist unaccompanied, undocumented minors. From October 2020 to August 2021, 9,254 unaccompanied, undocumented minors were released to sponsors in California, including 90 in Santa Barbara County and 139 in Ventura County. This is not a new occurrence — while county numbers dipped during the pandemic, they were at similar levels two years ago. When these minors arrive at the border, they are referred to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which seeks sponsors, preferably family members, for the youth. The pilot program began only a couple of months ago and MICOP currently has enrolled four youth in Santa Barbara and 11 in Ventura in the program. ORR does not release contact info for youth and sponsors, and locating these individuals, according to Program Director Leticia Sandoval, has been challenging. Sponsors, often farmworkers, work very long days, rendering difficult both the discovery of potential participants and persuasion to join the program. Sponsors may have other undocumented members in the household. COVID places constraints on in-home meetings, and there are privacy concerns with using public venues. Once youth are enrolled in the program, staff assesses the needs of the youth and the sponsoring family and connects them with services offered by MICOP and others. A mentor addresses the social and emotional needs of the youth. According to Sandoval, many of these youth have faced significant trauma, so the mentor’s role is a

vital part of the program. Workshops for family members aim to help them understand the trauma and how to better support the youth. Staff help youth enroll in school, advocate for language access and educational support, find work, navigate the bus system, and much more. Some of the youth in the program have offered to help other participants, and already one is tutoring two other participants who attend the same school. Trauma can stem from sexual abuse or violence in the home they left or that they experienced on the arduous, dangerous journey here. That journey also often involves hunger, dehydration, and exhaustion. Some youth are victims of gang violence, and many were separated from their parents at a young age. Most youth in the program are from Mexico, but there are also youth from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Nationally, last year the largest number of youth came from Guatemala (46 percent), Honduras (25 percent), and El Salvador (14 percent). Many youth are being reunited as teens with family members they have not seen since they were very young. According to Sandoval, this can engender feelings of abandonment, and youth can feel like a stranger or burden in the home. When the parent(s) have a new family here, resentment issues can arise. In Santa Maria, one of the youth was a victim of human trafficking. While being Indigenous is not a requirement for program participation, it is the focus of the outreach, and 10 of the 15 youth now in the program are Indigenous. The two caseworkers are from Indigenous, migrant communities, which, Sandoval relates, gives them insight and understanding of what these families are experiencing. Families have related that working with an Indigenous staff person provides a sense of safety and comfort when they are trying to access services and, of course, is critical

for language translation. While not Indigenous herself, Sandoval is first-generation Mexican-American and comes from a farmworker family. She brings to the position nearly 20 years of nonprofit work experience and an abundance of passion and dedication. That same passion and dedication seem to prevail among MICOP staff. The receptivity of youth and sponsors who have joined the program, according to Sandoval, has been amazing. Both youth and sponsors reach out regularly for support, and over time, trust has developed, allowing youth and sponsors to open up and process their experiences. This is not only healthy, but, according to Sandoval, may also help the youth in deportation proceedings because a showing of a fear of harm may be necessary to avoid deportation. These traumatized teens may be reluctant to open up with attorneys but more inclined to do so with social workers with whom they have developed a rapport. Thus, the social services and legal staff work closely together and having both components in-house, Sandoval relates, is quite beneficial. To reach more potential participants, MICOP is increasing its outreach on multiple fronts, including inperson contact at MICOP events and out in the community, through MICOP’s Oxnard-based Radio Indigena and social media, and through working with many community partners. Sandoval related that she has been thoroughly impressed with the youth in the program, whom she finds “resilient, smart, courageous, and resourceful. They’ve survived a difficult journey and want to provide a better life for themselves and their families. The goal of OFY is to help build on those strengths and resiliency so that they can thrive.”
