Around the time San Joaquin Magazine covered Juan Heredia’s diving efforts in October 2024, his story started garnering local and national recognition (including being SJMAG.COM

featured in People). After assisting with the search and rescue of a missing boy in Stockton, people took notice of this new side of diving. One person watching closely? Jessen, now 12, also started following Juan’s stories. “One of the biggest reasons I enjoy diving so much is because of Juan,” Jessen says. “He is a huge inspiration to me, and I look up to him a lot. The work he does is incredible, and he is always helping people and making a difference.” For Jessen, an avid lover of fish and water since he was little, it was the desire to follow in Juan’s footsteps and provide a service to others that propelled him to get his certification in open water diving at 11 years old. Jessen’s family contacted Juan about a scuba diving class and Jessen ended up working with another instructor at his dive school.

His goal is to assist in bringing home sons and daughters who have drowned and could not be located by authorities. t can feel daunting to buy or sell a home because there are so many steps involved. “It’s a huge moment in anyone’s life,” said Real Estate Agent Lynette Garlick. It’s for that reason she likes to make the process as easy and approachable as possible. “I pride myself on curating a kind of luxury, hospitality feel to the experience and meeting each client where they need to be met,” she said. Hospitality is a cornerstone of Lynette’s career. When she became a mom, she valued flexibility and entered the hospitality space first as a bartender in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf and then as a beer sales account manager for all of Pier 39, Polk Street, and Fisherman’s Wharf. ummer days in middle-ofCalifornia tend to get warm, and when we’re fighting for our lives against triple digit temperatures, searching out the best ways to cool down without hiding indoors all day can be a tall order. Luckily, we’ve come equipped with some serious suggestions for enjoying summer without sweating uncomfortably all day. Check out our top picks for suggestions to beat the heat and cool off without leaving town.

WATER PARKS Manteca is home to one of California’s most epic water parks—Great Wolf Lodge. The indoor water park boasts 95,000 square feet of indoor water park space, always set at a balmy 84 degrees. You can pack up the family and getaway for a weekend or take advantage of a day pass. Great Wolf offers season passes so you can visit all summer long, starting at $140 per person and running through Aug. 31. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp Resort in Lodi has a similar offer—you can book accommodations and stay for a few days or take advantage of a day pass. Many of the camp’s attractions are water-based including the interactive water playground with blasters, kiddie and big kid slides, and more. Plus, there’s a heated pool, lazy river, and spa tubs. If you’re up for a drive, the surrounding Central Valley has plenty of other options for water-based fun. Wake Island Waterpark is like nowhere else. Located in Pleasant Grove, it offers inflatables and obstacle courses on the water. Golfland Sunsplash in Roseville features more

than 30 rides including several waterslides. Island Waterpark is about two hours south of Stockton closer to Fresno but offers thrill rides for adrenaline junkies in addition to their lazy river and wave pool.

SPLASH PADS Lathrop is a hub for splash pads located at community parks. Mossdale Landing Community Park, Manuel Valverde Park, Missionary Minnie Lee Cotton Park, and Apolinar Sangalang Park all have splash pads.

Nearby in Brentwood, Blue Goose Park has an impressive splash pad meets play structure. In Mountain House there is a small water feature at Central Community Park. In Lodi, Micke Grove Regional Park, the grounds feature three-acre Wortley Lake and a 40-foot water fountain with a 1.5-mile scenic trail looping around. If you want a more relaxing environment, you can stroll The Japanese Garden and peep its little koi pond.

SWIMMING POOLS If you don’t have your own pool to splash into, take advantage of one of the community pools nearby. Stockton has several options including Brooking Park, Holiday Park, McKinley Park Pools, Victory Park Pool, and Weston Ranch High School Pool. In addition to access for the whole family, there are several designated times for lap swims for those ages 15+ or swim lessons. In Lodi, Enze Pool, Lodi Lake Beach, and Hutchins Indoor Pool are all open to the community. Lodi Lake even offers a beach environment for swims different from the traditional pool experiences with open swim hours listed on the website. In Tracy there is the Joe Wilson Swimming Pool, Manteca has Lincoln Pool, and Ripon has Ervin Zador Aquatic Center.

Lodi Lake is a popular destination for those that like to kayak and paddleboard or have a beach experience without leaving San Joaquin County. If you have your own boat, the Stockton Downtown Marina is a great place to launch and Village West Marina provides easy access to the waterways that ride all the way to San Francisco. You can launch or dock at several locations along the Delta including RiverPoint Landing Marina & Resort, Paradise Point on the Delta, Tiki Lagoon Resort & Marina, King Island Marina & Resort, Buckley Cove Boat Launch, and Bull Frog Landing. You can also pull your boat up to Windmill Cove Resort & Marina to enjoy one of their summer concerts on the water, hosted May through September annually. If you don’t have your own vessel, Captain Ray is happy to be your guide. Captain Ray’s River Tours are one of the only private tour companies on the San Joaquin and Sacramento River Delta providing rides May through October. Stockton is also home to several rental companies including H2O Excursions at Village West Marina & Resort. If you want an educational experience, book lessons through Stockton Sailing Club or the Delta Sculling Center.

Find a shady spot and cast a line. At Wortley Lake, you can fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, and black crappie. At Oak Grove Regional Park you can cast a line for trout in the stocked lake. At Caswell Memorial State Park in Ripon there is access to the Stanislaus River, which enjoys seasonal salmon runs. Lodi Lake and the Mokelumne River allows fishing from shore or a kayak (with rentals available nearby) where largemouth bass and bluegill live. Of course, the California Delta and San Joaquin River offer perhaps the best fishing in the area, with trophy-sized striped bass, sturgeon, and catfish. Head out to Jersey or Bethel islands or launch a boat for the best locations.

If you feel at home on the water, rent a houseboat through Paradise Point Marina. They also provide fishing boats, ski boats, patio boats, and other equipment packages.

f you find yourself with a free day in July, make the most of it while exploring your own backyard. Sure, getting out of town is a great way to pass the time, but instead of traveling far, you can soak in all San Joaquin County has to offer from sunrise to sunset.

SUNRISE: Start your day with movement. While there are plenty of places to watch the sunrise, we recommend a visit to Dos Reis Regional Park, set alongside the San Joaquin River. Doubling as a camp site, the park opens early for public access. Set your alarm early and get to the park before the official sunrise timestamp so you don’t miss the light reflecting off of the water.

COFFEE: Grab coffee and breakfast at your favorite local shop. In Lathrop, The Chai Story is a coffee truck that often parks on South Harlan Road. Or start making your way across the county and stop at

Stockton’s midtown restaurant, The Well. A nonprofit coffee shop, they blend more than beans. Grab a cup of home roasted coffee with a homemade breakfast before perusing the local art. The studios inside of the Well include a screen printing shop, dance studio, music recording studio, digital studio, and more. You can even get an education in coffee at the on-site roastery.

CONTINUE MOVING: If you have more in the tank after your sunrise stroll, head over to Shine Cycle + Yoga + Barre + Reformer Pilates for a class. This all-in-one fitness studio in Lincoln Village has drop-in passes so you don’t have to be a member to sign up. Check the calendar and choose the movement that feels right to you from cycle, yoga, barre, and pilates courses.

ALTERNATE ROUTE: If you don’t feel like the sweat, take a different sort of class. The studios at The Well often offer educational art courses for the community. The Catalyst is another hub for art and movement courses. Regina Rose Studio in Stockton offers art instruction for all ages and HATCH Workshop is a great place for learning ceramics or woodworking. There are also occasional pop-up classes at Appellation Lodi (the former Wine & Roses Hotel) and Bourdeaux Inn and Cheese Central are both common locations for cooking classes.

LUNCH AT THE STOCKTON MARINA: Views of the water? Yes please! Head over to Bob’s at the Marina for a juicy burger with views of the Delta. The Weber Points events calendar is filled with live music options, Banner Island Ballpark routinely hosts evening baseball games with The Stockton Ports, and a few Lodi wineries stay open late on select nights for live music and late bottle service. It’s best to choose the activity that suits your mood and enjoy the evening as the Delta breezes whip in and the sun relents.

STROLL THE JOAN DARRAH PROMENADE: When the weather is warm, a cool breeze off of the Delta may be all you need to beat the heat. Walk along the Joan Darrah Promenade to enjoy the waterfront and the public art installations. The promenade has several notable works including the Confucius Bicentennial Memorial and Stockton Rising, plus several kinetic sculptures at Morelli Park.

SEEK SANCTUARY INDOORS: Because July can get sticky, it’s nice to have an escape plan for getting inside. One of the many museums in SJC will offer a brief reprieve from the afternoon sun. Consider your options. You can view art at the Haggin Museum, get a history lesson at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum, or take the kids to the Children’s Museum of Stockton. Regardless of which option you choose, each will be good for a few hours of indoor fun.

DINE AT A FOOD TRUCK: Something about food truck culture comes alive in the summer months. Search out popular destinations like A Moveable Feast at 1000 Kettleman Lane in Lodi or sample grub from the rotating list of trucks at Side Hustle Brew. Haggin Museum Features Famous Filipino Comic Illustrator Tony DeZuniga

t first glance, it may seem unusual for an art museum to feature the work of a comics illustrator, but that’s exactly what the Haggin Museum is doing until mid-August. The exhibition makes sense when you consider that illustration plays a role in shaping visual culture and storytelling across generations, according to Haggin Museum Director of Marketing Amanda Zimmerman.

\As for the Haggin, it has collaborated with the comic convention StocktonCon for more than a decade. “Each year, many of the artists and illustrators invited to StocktonCon have shown a deep appreciation for the Haggin’s art collection,” she said. Through conversations with those StocktonCon artists and illustrators, the Haggin learned of Tony DeZuniga. \Tony was a Filipino comics artist and illustrator best known for his works for DC Comics. He studied graphic design in New York and eventually co-created

the fictional comic characters Jonah Hex and Black Orchid. Later, he became a video game conceptual designer and spent a decade with the U.S. and Japan divisions of Sega while also illustrating books. He spent his retirement years in Stockton before returning to the Philippines, where he died in 2012. “As the first Filipino artist to create comics for major American publishers, DeZuniga helped open doors for artists who followed,” Amanda said. “His dynamic style, detailed linework, and memorable character designs left a significant mark on the medium.” Until August 16, the museum will feature approximately 30 of Tony’s works spanning a variety of mediums, including original comic book panels, video game concept art, sketches, acrylic paintings, and more. The pieces range from 9” x 12” to 30” x 40.” His style blended realism with bold, energetic linework, and his use of sable brushes created dynamic variations in line weight and rich, dramatic blacks that added striking contrast, movement, and depth to his compositions, Amanda said. He balanced highly detailed rendering with a painterly quality that gave his works warmth and life. “The admiration for Tony DeZuniga and his work seems endless,” she added. “Throughout the community, people consistently praise not only his extraordinary artistic talent, but also the kindness, generosity, and warmth he showed to others.”

fter years of everyone telling Andrew “Panda” Garza he should do something more with his passion for cooking, he finally did, and his business has been growing exponentially ever since. What caused him to finally take the leap of faith was during the pandemic, both he and his wife, Lindsey, were on work leave for various reasons. “My wife said it won’t hurt to try and so we did,” he said. That was in November 2023 and Andrew hasn’t looked back. What makes the business so successful, according to the Garzas, is excellent customer service. “We are able to accommodate dietary needs upon request, and we genuinely care if they are satisfied with their experience," he said. In addition, the food itself is unique and changes weekly, with updates posted on social media. The sticky ribs are oneof-a-kind – barrel-smoked, deep fried, drizzled with teriyaki sauce, and topped with sesame seeds and green onions. Panda's most popular item is the Smoked Tri-Tip Sammich, but the mac and cheese is a close second. “Lindsey and I spent two months coming up with

the recipe by experimenting, and now we have it down to a science,” he said. The Garzas also love to be involved with the community at weddings, festivals, fundraisers, and more. They have worked with numerous schools and programs in Lodi, including Vinewood Science Camp, Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission, and St. Anne's Harvest Festival, to name a few. Panda’s Smoke Shack also employs the younger generation, intentionally. "We pay for them to get their ServSafe food handler card and teach them the basics in customer service,” Andrew said. “A lot of kids these days don't know how to talk to customers. It’s extremely rewarding to see them grow and eventually move on to bigger restaurants." Panda’s Smoke Shack isn’t currently a brick-andmortar restaurant, but that means Andrew and his team can cook onsite so food is served fresh. The trailer is battery-powered, silent and all black, which is perfect for special events. Panda’s Smoke Shack can be found at Kettleman Station (400 E. ’ve learned something dangerous about farmers markets. You never leave with what you planned to buy. I’ll walk in telling myself I just need a few peaches, and somehow walk out balancing fresh sourdough bread, homemade salsa, kettle corn, local honey, candied almonds, flowers for the kitchen table, and enough cherries to stain every shirt I own by lunchtime. Honestly, farmers markets in San Joaquin County have become one of my favorite weekend rituals. There’s something refreshing about getting up early, grabbing a coffee, and wandering through rows of colorful produce while pretending I know how to pick the “perfect” avocado. Spoiler alert: I still squeeze every single one like I’m studying for a final exam. What I love most is that every market has its own personality. Some feel like a neighborhood block party. Others feel like a giant outdoor pantry where everything smells incredible and somebody is always handing you a free sample you absolutely did not need, but instantly decide you can’t live without. One of my longtime favorites is the Golden Villa Farmers Market in Stockton. If you show up early enough, you’ll find some of the freshest produce in the county along with specialty Asian vegetables, herbs, seafood vendors, and enough food options to completely destroy your plans for a sensible breakfast. Then there’s the Weberstown Farmers Market, where I somehow convince myself every week that buying fruit counts as healthy behavior, even after I leave carrying caramel corn and fresh pastries the size of hubcaps.

Downtown Stockton Certified Farmers Market has become another favorite stop because it feels less like grocery shopping and more like a community celebration. Local vendors, flowers, handcrafted goods, music, and smiling families everywhere make the whole thing feel alive. Over in Lodi, the Lodi Certified Farmers Market practically turns downtown into summer vacation mode. Fresh produce, baked goods, wine-country charm, and live entertainment somehow make shopping for tomatoes feel like a mini festival. The Downtown Tracy Farmers Market keeps bringing crowds every weekend, and for good reason. There’s a fun small-town energy where everyone strolls slowly, chats with vendors, and somehow leaves carrying giant bags of fruit they definitely didn’t plan on buying. Manteca Farmers Market is another hidden gem filled with farm-fresh produce, local honey, flowers, baked treats, and enough snack temptations to completely sabotage anyone attempting a diet before noon. And Mountain House CFM continues growing into one of the area’s most popular markets, packed with specialty vendors, fresh produce, and families enjoying the kind of atmosphere that reminds you why shopping local actually matters. The truth is, farmers markets aren’t really about groceries anymore. They’re about slowing down for a few hours, supporting local growers, finding ridiculously sweet strawberries, and accidentally spending $14 on artisan jam because the vendor let you sample it first. And honestly? Worth every penny.

his July is especially celebratory thanks to the 250th anniversary of the USA, which just so happens to coincide with some other big anniversary celebrations including centennials for United Way and the Stockton Symphony and the 60th anniversary of the San Joaquin Historical Society. But giant milestones aside, there’s another reason worth cheering this month. Every July since 1984, the nation has hailed ice cream since the month has been claimed as National Ice Cream Month. But wait— it gets better. The third Sunday in July—July 19 in 2026—is National Ice Cream Day. Haven’t made plans yet? Look below.

THE ICE CREAM EMPORIUM (RIPON)

Every month, The Ice Cream Emporium in Ripon rolls out a new Disney theme. June wrapped Zootopia flavors and for July, they are leaning hard into all things Cars. The Radiator Springs menu will feature a Route 66 flavor of the month (perfect timing for the historic road’s 100th anniversary) made with chocolate and vanilla ice cream and finished with a caramel swirl. Other on-theme offerings include Luigi’s Lemon Swirl, a lemon sorbet topped with lemon-lime soda; Mater’s Junkyard Sundae, cookies and cream ice cream, chocolate sauce, crushed Oreos, gummy worms, whipped cream, and a cherry piled high; Piston Cup Champion Fuel, an energy drink mixed with peach and pomegranate syrups before it’s topped with cold foam and gold sprinkles; and Lightning McQueen’s Victory Lap Sundae, started with that Route 66 ice cream, topped with red marshmallow cream, whipped cream, red and black sprinkles, and a checkered flag topper. Of course, the adorable old-school scoop shop décor and traditional treats are always on tap, including banana splits, several ice cream sundaes, and traditional malt desserts.

WineDine 209 DOUBLE DIP GALLERY (LODI)

At Double Dip Gallery in Lodi, art meets ice cream in this quaint Pine Street shop. Monthly artists are on display throughout the gallery, which also serves ice cream to guests. Every month a new artist, and a new ice cream flavor, are on display. And in addition to the 25-30 tastes from Gunther’s Ice Cream already available at the shop, July will feature horchata as its flavor of the month. Beth Brampton will be the featured artist, showcasing her work alongside several other local stars. Of course, Double Dip also serves its exclusive Gunther’s Ice Cream flavor. The Petite Petit Sirah Sorbet is a dairyfree, wine-infused delicacy made from Michael David Winery’s Petite Petit wine.

ROCK N ROLL HANDROLLED PREMIUM ICE CREAM (MULTIPLE LOCATIONS)

Speaking of ice cream art, Rock N Rolled’s method of flash freezing ice cream and creating delicate ribbons of delicious flavors right in front of your eyes is as much of a show as it is a dessert. With locations in Manteca, Lodi, Lathrop, and Modesto, San Joaquin County residents have plenty of chances to try the trendy dessert, which is also sometimes called Thai rolled ice cream or stir fry ice cream. What sets this specific hand rolled brand apart may be its insane flavors. Instead of settling for “vanilla” and “chocolate,” guests can order up Biscoff and banana made with full-sized cookies, matcha flavored ice cream finished with popping boba and fresh strawberries, instyle Dubai white chocolate, and cereal crunch finished with sprinkles and childhood cereal favorites.

A paleteria is a traditional Mexican ice cream shop that typically sells paletas, or ice pops, which are typically made from scratch and use whole ingredients. They tend to be colorful and often include ingredients such as sliced fruit, whole Oreo cookies, gummy bears, and shaved coconut, depending on the flavor. The vibrant and lively shops also often carry a variety of other treats, as well, and La Michoacana Prime is no exception. Boasting 30+ homemade paleta flavors as well as traditional ice cream, the store represents both a cultural delicacy and Mexican nostalgia not available on every corner. Stop by for all-natural ice cream, sorbets, and aqua frescas. The ice

creams are made fresh in-store daily and come in varieties such as Mamey, Mango/Cahamoy, Coconut, Black Cherry, Tamarinda, and more. The paletas are the real show stopper though, finished with slices of fresh cucumber, guava, strawberries, and more. There are even spicy flavors featuring chiles typically combined with fresh fruit. For something unique, try their Ron Con Pasas flavor—or rum raisin.

GHIRARDELLI CHOCOLATE OUTLET AND ICE CREAM SHOP LATHROP)

The ice cream outlet brings the goodness of San Francisco’s Ghirardelli legacy to our little corner of the world. While it’s a great place to buy Ghirardelli chocolates close to home, it also doubles as an ice cream shop serving hot fudge made fresh daily and poured over decadent and creamy ice cream flavors.

For July all eyes are on Dubai chocolate. The brand has already found success with this trendy pistachio and chocolate concoction, so in July they decided to expand offerings with a Dubai Style Chocolate Strawberry Bliss dessert. The goal is to offer the iconic flavors of Dubai chocolate with a sweet summer twist. The dessert cup offers layers of freshly sliced strawberries topped with that famous hot fudge, a signature pistachio butter and kataifi blend, white chocolate, sea salt, whipped cream, and barista chips.

Served right on the water at Village West Marina, Sunset Sweets offers a little of everything. In addition to Gunther’s Ice Cream from Sacramento, Hawaiian Shaved Ice and fresh coffee from Trail Coffee Roasters are amongst favorites. Summer is in full swing, which means Sunset Sweets is operating under summer hours. Stop by from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on weekends. The authentic Hawaiian shaved ice offers seemingly unlimited flavor combinations and is a favorite for refreshing summer treats without the dairy. Plus, the sweets shop serves some fresh-baked goodies including peanut butter brownies and an entire line-up of cookie flavors.

DREAM ICE CREAM PARLOR (STOCKTON)

Dream Ice Cream Parlor in Stockton made a name for itself quite some time ago, known for more than simple scoops. The West Lane storefront also sells ice cream sandwiches and bubble waffles in popular flavors such as Thai Tea and horchata. Choose from a list of creative options such as Taro, Vietnamese Coffee, Butter Brickle, and Banana Rocky Road. There are some classics as well, like bubblegum, Oreo cookie, rocky road, and strawberry. Flavors can be scooped into a cup or enjoyed in one of their signature applications. The Dream Bun for example squeezes a scoop of ice cream between a sliced donut before its topped with a goodie of your choice. Puffles are a Hong Kongstyle street bubble waffle that piles ice cream into a little waffle-like jacket. Throw your favorite flavor and best toppings in a homemade waffle cone. Or top churros and brownies with a combo creation for a truly decadent dessert. Every month they also unveil a specialty, limited-time flavor.
