Good Riddance, 2025… or Was It Actually Not That Bad?

et’s be honest—2025 was a year. Some folks will be waving goodbye with both hands, maybe even tossing in a little shimmy, thrilled to slam the door on the chaos, the surprises, the “plot twists no one asked for.” Others might look back fondly, clutching their memories like a cozy blanket, insisting that 2025 was actually pretty great—thank you very much. And then there’s the rest of us, standing somewhere in emotional Switzerland, shrugging our shoulders and thinking, Eh… could’ve been worse. Could’ve been better. Definitely could’ve used more snacks. But whether you’re sending 2025 off with a heartfelt serenade or escorting it to the curb like an overextended houseguest, we can all agree on one thing: it’s time for a fresh chapter. A redo. A reset button. A chance for 2026 to strut in, flip its hair, and reassure us that things are about to get good— maybe even great. So here’s my hope for you as the calendar flips: May 2026 bring joy that feels ridiculous, opportunities that make your eyes widen, adventures you didn’t see coming (the good kind), and laughter that completely ruins your mascara. May it be the year you try the thing you’ve been putting off, meet the person who becomes a new favorite, and eat the dessert without apologizing. Whether you’re celebrating a triumphant exit from 2025 or giving it a bittersweet farewell, I’m cheering you on. Here’s to a bright, bold, and beautifully unpredictable 2026. \We’ve earned it. “There are many rebels and trailblazing legendary women in this group. I’m humbled and happy to take my place among them as a force for good,” Kay says. Kay spends the majority of her time serving the Family Resource Center, where she has held the executive director title since 2003. During her tenure, she has had a heavy hand in operating the Teen Impact Center for the City of Stockton, helping FRC become the city’s 211 service provider, and opening a state-funded preschool dedicated to FRC’s founder Joan Richards. “At the heart of our mission is empowering families to build on their strengths by providing concrete support during times of need, so they and their children can build resilience,” she says. “The greatest rewards are the impacts or success stories of the individuals we serve.” At her core, Kay has always been focused on bettering the lives of children. She says so many do not get the love and encouragement they need due to issues such as inadequate time spent with parents, geographical separation from extended family, and living in toxic stress. However, family connection is the biggest indicator of success as children become adults. There is also a violence epidemic in

our country and the recent shooting in Stockton that took the lives of three children and one young adult are proof the city isn’t exempt from those issues. “We need to bring back programs that were effective in reducing violence amongst young people,” Kay says. “To get that done, we need to take [a]lesson from Amelia Ann Adams and ‘use our anger for good.’” While it’s Kay’s history of service that got her nominated for the ATHENA Award, she is looking at the recognition as an opportunity to continue her impact both through FRC and beyond. “Witnessing the positive outcome on children’s lives, has been a catalyst to seek more opportunities to serve for the greatest possible impact,” she says. “I share the vision of Shirzad Chamine, author of the New York Times bestselling book, Positive Intelligence, to equip young children with the tools they need to practice mental fitness and build resiliency, no matter what they face in life.” While continuing her work to stand up for children and the adults who care for them and foster parent involvement, Kay also says she welcomes opportunities to mentor other women who are ready to take up the cause. After all, “when we

invest in children, everyone wins,” Kay says. “Today, our children are up against greater environmental and societal challenges than ever before.” One thing is certain—Kay’s dedication knows no bounds. She has been on a path of community service since high school when volunteer hours began as a means to impress college admissions boards before she realized how much more meaningful that time really was. After the birth of her first daughter—who is now a doctor of physical therapy—she started on her current path of championing children at Delta Health Care as the director for the Women Infant and Children program. Once, she and some colleagues even jumped out of a plane to bring attention to childcare cuts. “Working alongside so many women who reflect the ATHENA Leadership model of living authentically, learning constantly, advocating fiercely, acting courageously, fostering collaboration, building relations, giving back, and celebrating large and small successes to improve our community is a great new sphere of influence I’m looking forward to joining.”

A Village of Support CAPC TREATS THE WHOLE FAMILY WITH MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

he Child Abuse Prevention Council is a nonprofit focused on protecting kids from abuse and neglect through community-based programs. Perhaps unsurprisingly, mental health services are a large part of the equation, available both to families that need counsel and community youth. There are countless heartbreaking stories from kids that come to CAPC. Annie is a six-year-old girl who worked through trauma related to abuse by a family member utilizing CAPC therapy services. While the perpetrator was removed from the home immediately, the fear didn’t dissipate overnight. Instead, it took more than a year of play-based therapy with a professional to help Annie find hope again. In the end, it was exactly what she needed to heal from the experiences she never should have had in the first place. CAPC mental health resources are available to children ages 0-18 with Medi-Cal and their families, stretching to include family-based treatment when

needed. Parents and caregivers who have trauma that affects their family unit are eligible for outpatient services. For those in grades K-12, there are on-campus groups and family supports and transitional youth (ages 16-25) with risk factors including exposure to violence, exploitation, and gang involvement all qualify. “Mental health is central because CAPC’s mission isn’t just crisis response—it’s about addressing the root causes that place children at risk,” says Shauna Buzunis-Jacob, development director for CAPC. “CAPC notes that many families face overlapping barriers like substance use, domestic violence, homelessness, unemployment, and limited life skills—factors that directly affect stress, parenting capacity, and child safety.” By offering services to the whole family, CAPC is able to support its broader goals of protecting children

and strengthening families. After all, parents and children with strong, healthy bonds are less likely to participate in abusive or neglectful relationships. In addition to the services already mentioned, CAPC offers suicide prevention in high schools throughout San Joaquin County with trainings, depression screenings, support groups, and referrals. School trainings keep educators up to date on how to handle concerns and help them to recognize abuse red flags. “By offering trauma-informed, relationshipcentered, and strengths-based support— including therapy models that strengthen attachment and mitigate the impact of ACEs—CAPC helps families heal and stabilize,” Shauna says.

Created to support local businesses during a historically slow time of year for eating out and to shine a light on Lodi’s robust culinary scene, the ten-day event will see multi-course prix fixe menus, wine pairings, corkage-free nights, and specialty dishes only offered during the event. “Restaurant Week also strengthens the connection between our wine, agriculture, and culinary communities,” says Wes Rhea, President and CEO of Visit Lodi. “It’s a way to invite locals and visitors to rediscover Lodi through flavor, value, and shared experiences.” The list of participants includes community staples and new culinary favorites from Lodi Beer Company and

community-focused, the bookstore doubles as an event space with weekly preschool story time on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and coffee hosted out of a trailer on Friday mornings. In 2026, the business is looking to fine tune its book clubs and customer loyalty programs as well as get involved in more local events. While the bookstore seemed to explode on the scene quickly last October, the idea was ten years in the making. The serial entrepreneur with experience launching businesses in the defense and energy industry opened Ripon Bookstore to fuel her own passion for reading and sharing stories with others. She says for a decade she talked about the need for a bookstore in Ripon and after years of dreaming, she decided it was up to her to open the space. “After holding onto the idea for so long, it didn't take very long to plan the space and create the vision of the bookstore,” she said. While Jennifer talks fervently about her love of reading, she has also put pen to paper and written her own book titled, My Mom is a Veteran. The story is a nod to her own experience in the Marine Corps and highlights her experiences as both a veteran and a mother. The children’s book specifically focuses on the strength and service of women in the military.

SAY Bye to Cancer ST JOSEPH’S FOUNDATION OF SAN JOAQUIN HOSTS ITS 17TH ANNUAL 5K EVENT PRESENTED BY PACIFIC HOME CARE SERVICES  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

ennifer Woodward has been participating in the annual St. Joseph’s 5K Fun Run/Walk for Wellness since 2019 in honor of her mother who died from liver cancer. After losing her mom, Jennifer signed up to be team leader and today mans the largest team year after year . Her team is named “Bye Cancer” and every year Jennifer says the number of participants has grown. In 2025, Bye Cancer had 131 total team members earning it the largest team award for the third year running. “Every year, I work on recruiting new team members and continuing to support [St Joseph’s] Cancer Institute as much as possible,” Jennifer says. “St. Joseph’s has been my home for 26 years and I try my best to do my part in

helping the community.” Jennifer works at St. Joseph’s and she also sees its impact on the cancer community. “I used to take my mom to SF for treatment at CPMC,” Jennifer explains. “The travel alone took a toll on my mom, and the time away from family and work was hard for me.” Having cancer treatment close to home is important. As for why Jennifer’s team is so successful, she attributes it to the toll cancer takes on families and the want to support the efforts of St. Joseph’s . “People keep coming back because we are all touched and affected by cancer in some ways. Having cancer treatment and resources available in our community is valuable.”

Team Bye Cancer will be participating again in this year’s event, presented by Pacific Homecare Services, on Jan. 31. It is the 17th year the Fun Run has taken place. Entry fees include a t-shirt, swag bag, free photo downloads, and post-race snacks plus a chance to win prizes. Of course, the biggest perk is that proceeds stay local and benefit St. Joseph's Cancer Institute. Since 2010, the event has raised over $981,000. This year, the goal is to increase that number by $130,000. Participants should sign up in advance and arrive at 8:40 a.m. for a pre-race warm-up. The run/walk takes off at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow at 10:15 a.m. All participants should show up at the University Park Campus near Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton.

o, you had one too many last night? Lessons and lore are aplenty when it comes to drinking alcohol, with lots of contradicting research to back up wild claims. While some say only time will cure a truly nasty hangover, others swear by rehydrating, downing vitamins, or even sweating it out. Another possibility—and perhaps a more enjoyable one—is hair of the dog. If you can stomach a drink the morning after, it just may bring you back to life. Alcohol consumption dulls many painful symptoms of a hangover, including headache and gastrointestinal upset. Since a hangover is essentially withdrawal symptoms from the alcohol, reintroducing alcohol to these receptors can stave those negative feelings off. It may not aid the dehydration and vitamin depletion you are feeling, but it can certainly lessen the worst parts. However, if you go right back to heavy drinking, the symptoms will come back with a vengeance once the alcohol wears off again, meaning hair of the dog is potentially most effective

However, since many people are reaching for the cure early in the morning, they may be opting for breakfast cocktails such as a bloody mary, mimosa, beermosa, or michelada. Ginger-based beverages are

another solid choice since ginger is known for mitigating stomach upset. Luckily ginger beer and ginger ale are both common mixins. A bloody mary—or even bloody maria— includes the vitamins and antioxidants your body needs to fight off the Budweiser flu. It also has a spicy kick that can, at least temporarily, wake you back up. Anything carbonated, including a mimosa, will settle the stomach as well while the orange juice—also in a beermosa—gives you a

boost of vitamin C. Certain spices add more healing power. Mint, like ginger, is good for stomachaches, while turmeric can combat inflammation and nausea while also supporting liver function. Salty beverages help rebalance your sodium levels and give an electrolyte boost and a touch of spice can act as a mild pain reliever. Editor’s note: you may notice both provided recipes include some sort of spice be it pepperoncini juice or hot sauce. High quality ingredients can also help. Consider

skipping well liquor and going straight to the good stuff that goes down gently without overwhelming the palate. And consider avoiding anything too sweet. “Sugary cocktails… can worsen a hangover,” Andy says. Both of the recipes below include garnish, which is another positive component for a hangover cure. Afterall, it’s getting some food into your stomach.

INGREDIENTS:

1.5 ounces Mezcal Reposado 5 ounces tomato juice 2 ounces Habanero Hots house salsa Dash of Worcestershire Dash of Habanero Hots house-made hot sauce Smidge of horseradish

his season, while the temperature begins to cool, and the leaves start to fall, there’s nothing quite like the comfort of a warm, home-cooked meal waiting for you at the end of the day. This month, we’re embracing the art of slow cooking—where patience pays off with tender meats, rich flavors, with an unmistakable aroma filling your home. In this issue, we’re featuring two fall favorites that make the most of your slow cooker: savory pork loin, and juicy chicken breast. Each recipe is crafted for simplicity and satisfaction—perfect for busy weeknights, Sunday dinners, or cozy gatherings. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or new to the slow cooker, these dishes bring together convenience and comfort in every bite. So, grab your ingredients, set the timer, and let your kitchen fill with the heartwarming scents of fall. Dinner’s never been this easy— or this delicious.

APPLE CIDER PORK CHOPS Serves 4

Prep Time: 10 min Cook Time: 5-6 hours on LOW or 3-4 hours on HIGH

INGREDIENTS:

2 Tbs. avocado oil 1 lb. boneless pork chops 2 apples (any variety, we used Granny Smith), diced 1 yellow onion, peeled & chopped 1 Tbs. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. sea salt ½ tsp. black pepper 3 garlic cloves, peeled & minced 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice ½ cup chicken stock Fresh parsley, to garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

Heat avocado oil in a skillet, and brown pork chops, about 1-2 minutes per side. (1–2 min). Place sliced apples and onions in the bottom of your slow cooker. Lay the pork chops over the apple mixture. Whisk together balsamic vinegar, sea salt, black pepper, garlic, pumpkin pie spice, and chicken broth. Pour over pork chops. Cook in your slow cooker for 5-6 hours on LOW heat, or 3-4 hours on HIGH heat. The pork chops should reach 145 F (63 C) when done. Spoon apples and onions onto a plate, followed by pork chops, slow-cooker juices, and parsley.

SLOWCOOKED CHICKEN BREAST & BUTTERNUT PUREE Serves 4

Prep Time: 10 min Cook Time: 5-6 hours on LOW or 3 hours on HIGH

INGREDIENTS:

1.5 lbs. boneless chicken breast 1 Tbs. avocado oil 1 Tbs. coconut aminos 1 Tbs. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. sea salt ½ tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. smoked paprika 1 tsp. fresh rosemary, minced 5 cups cubed butternut squash 1 yellow onion, peeled & chopped 2 Tbs. butter, melted 1 tsp. sea salt ½ tsp. black pepper 3 garlic cloves, peeled & minced 2 Tbs. fresh sage, minced

INSTRUCTIONS:

Pat chicken breasts dry, and coat both sides with avocado oil, coconut aminos, balsamic vinegar, sea salt, black pepper, and spices. Place cubed butternut squash, and onion on the bottom. Add butter, sea salt, black pepper, and garlic. Lay the rubbed chicken breasts on top. Cook on LOW heat for 5-6 hours, or HIGH heat for 3 hours. Transfer chicken to a plate, and cover to keep warm. Transfer the squash mixture to a blender. Blend until smooth, and creamy (add a splash of broth or butter for richness). Spoon the butternut puree onto plates, and top with sliced chicken. Garnish with sage.
