ugust has a funny way of sneaking by. One minute we're celebrating the first day of summer, and the next we're wondering how school is almost back in session. But before that happens, there's still plenty of sunshine left to enjoy, and San Joaquin County is putting on quite a show. If you've found yourself parked in front of the television lately, here's your gentle reminder: there's not much waiting for you besides reruns. The real entertainment is happening outside. From live concerts under the stars and bustling farmers markets to wine tastings at our incredible local wineries, community festivals, and evening strolls through our charming downtowns, there's no shortage of reasons to step outside and soak up the season. hen former Stockton mayor Michael Tubbs launched Stockton Scholars in 2018 as part of the Reinvent Stockton Foundation, it became the flagship program of a larger initiative aimed at creating opportunity in a city that believed it was stunted. The goal of the college promise program is to remove financial and systematic barriers to higher education for Stockton students SJMAG.COM

while simultaneously investing in the future of the city. “Stockton Scholars was intentionally designed to be an accessible scholarship program rather than a competitive one,” explains Michelle DiGuilio, associate director of Stockton Scholars. “We believe that Stockton students already possess the talent, resilience, and drive needed to succeed. Our role is to ensure they have access to the opportunities, resources, and support that allow them to thrive.” Since 2018, Stockton Scholars has awarded more than $6.7 million to over 5,500 qualifying students. To receive benefits, Stockton students must graduate from a public high school within Stockton city limits, maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, and be pursuing a postsecondary pathway such as a four-year university program, community college, or technical education. After enrolling in the program, students

with the financial gift helps students become better prepared for postsecondary education as well as life as an adult. After the four year cap has been reached, students are moved to the alumni network of Stockton Scholars to receive ongoing benefits that include professional networking, internship connections, job fairs, community events, and career development resources. The Life of a Show Dog
LUCIAN IS NAVIGATING THE LOCAL SHOW DOG CIRCUIT ALONGSIDE HIS HANDLER, SARAH FOUNTAIN BY NORA HESTON TARTE
L
ucian is a 4-year-old male Borzoi that lives in Ripon with his owner Sarah Fountain and her family. He is a show dog, and he’s been collecting accolades since starting competition at just 6 months old. “He has a goofy, outgoing, and laid back personality, and he truly loves interacting with other dogs,” says Sarah.
A STAR PERFORMER Lucian is also fast. He’s earned a BCAT title, which designates high-point totals related to speed in the 100-yard dash coursing ability test. “In the show ring, he has achieved two owner-handled group placements, a specialty

Award of Merit, and multiple specialty reserve placements,” Sarah says. One more major win and Lucian will earn an AKC Championships title, which means he’s cumulated a minimum of 15 points against other dogs in the same breed during competition.
LEARNING THE ROPES Lucian is Sarah’s first borzoi—and her first show dog. After working with a dog groomer in Modesto at Two Paws Up, she was introduced to the breed, and later added one to her brood, which includes two human children. Not long after, her long-time friend, Bobby Ott, introduced Sarah to the world of showing dogs.
For a while, Sarah showed Lucian just about everywhere within driving distance, but now that Lucian is focused on getting that AKC Championship title, Sarah is more selective about participation, focused on specialty shows and events with larger entries. “One of the most challenging aspects of showing dogs is the level of nuance involved,” Sarah says. “Every breed has its own presentation style, and beyond that, each individual dog has its own personality and way of performing in the ring.” As a handler, Sarah is learning right alongside Lucian. But the wins depend on him. No matter how badly a handler wants it, the dog has to perform. Sarah says she’s racking up more small wins than ribbons but is constantly learning to adjust through the process. “We are growing together, and the mistakes we make in one ring become valuable lessons we can improve on in the next,” she says. “Watching that work come together as your dog matures and improves is just as meaningful as any win in the ring.”

Dina Hagens created an engaging and enjoyable class designed to introduce the dog/handler to the fundamentals of scent work. She emphasizes a positive approach, making it suitable for those new to the discipline. As a result, many of her students choose to transition into formal training programs with the goal of competing in scent work. Alicia Kahler and Jonnee Bardo facilitate the foundation obedience classes and oversee the ADSP training program. Their combined years of experience brings a practical approach to handler/dog training and the ability to choose the best trainers for their clients.

STOCKTON STREETDOGS SERVES DOGS IN NEED BY NORA HESTON TARTE
A
fter spending time in Stockton, Jesse Mejia, the founder of Stockton Streetdogs noticed a need that wasn’t being addressed. Not all homeless dogs were abandoned or unloved. Some were a product of their circumstances. “We believe every dog deserves compassion and dignity, regardless of where they live,” Jesse says. Over the last two years, Stockton Streetdogs has been responsible for feeding hundreds of dogs living on the streets of Stockton thousands of pounds of food. “Four days a week, rain or shine, we provide food, basic medical support, collars, leashes, vaccines, microchips, emergency transportation, and connect dogs with fosters and rescue resources whenever possible,” Jesse says.
THE MISSION? REDUCE SUFFERING AND CREATE REAL CHANGE. “Many [dogs Jesse saw on the streets] belonged to people who were struggling themselves and simply lacked access to resources,” Jesse explains. “I realized these dogs didn’t need

judgment; they needed someone willing to show up. What started as feeding a few dogs turned into dozens, and eventually hundreds. Along the way it became clear that this needed to become something bigger.” In any given week, Stockton Streetdog volunteers complete feeding routes, check on
medical issues, coordinate veterinary care, respond to emergencies, transport animals, and work with outside resources as needed. “Yes, Stockton Streetdogs is a registered 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, but the goal was never just
to start a nonprofit. The goal was to solve problems and create change,” says Jesse. All those who want to get involved need to do is care, according to Jesse. He encourages people to leave out water bowls for stray dogs and show compassion. Volunteers can get involved in feeding routes, foster animals, help with transportation, or work behind the scenes. There is also a need for monetary and supply donations to keep the efforts going. “It’s easy to see a problem and hope someone fixes it,” Jesse says. “But sometimes you realize you have the ability to be part of that solution.”

We like Barkleyville partially because of its adorable name, but the separate small and large dog areas are also a draw, championing pet safety. However, it is one of many. Other designated dog parks include Lathrop Dog Park, Michael Faklis Park, Manteca Dog Park, Oakdale Dog Park, River Islands Dog Park, and Ellis Dog Park. Perhaps the most unique dog park experience nearby is Paw Forward Doggie Park in Manteca, a bookable, private dog park. To participate, lease out the halfacre park for your pooch alone or a private group. Amenities include an agility course, parkour obstacles, and more.

estled among an almond orchard on the grounds of Sycamore Lane Kennels and Farm, All Dogs Sports Park LLC offers a welcoming environment designed for people and their dogs. Owners Alicia and Riney Kahler, whose roots are in the American Kennel Club (AKC) conformation ring, created the park to support the training, enrichment, and show needs of dogs from the local community as well as throughout California. Ever-expanding, the park offers something for every dog, young or old, any breed or mix. For sport training, All Dogs Sports Park can accommodate formal obedience, rally, agility, dock diving, scent work, barn hunt, foundation obedience, and disc. You don’t have to train for competition to enjoy what the park offers; dogs benefit from enrichment, and when given the opportunity to use their natural instincts, they become better canine citizens. “We are currently adding a FastCat track, which is a 100-yard dash for dogs,” Alicia says. Fast CAT stands for Fast Coursing Ability Test — the AKC's timed 100-yard sprint, introduced in 2016. “Your dog chases a lure the length of a football field with the end zones cut off. Time is recorded to the hundredth of a second,” she adds. Fast CAT is built around a simple ladder: every official run earns points, points accumulate over the dog's career, and crossing certain thresholds awards a title that becomes a permanent part of the dog's registered name. No qualifying scores, no placements required — just consistent runs. “With the expansion of the park, we can offer the AKC sport UpDog Challenge Games,” she said. “The games are designed for all experience levels. There are no age limits for games that are toss-n-fetch based.”

The fact that over 44% of traditional pop-up businesses cost less than $5,000 to launch (according to CapitalOne Shopping Research) creates the time and space often needed to build both proof of concept and capital. In fact, the temporary retail sector in the U.S., including flea markets, food trucks, and pop-up events, stands to net more than $95 billion in 2026. We chatted with some of the region’s successful entrepreneurs, those who have since turned their side hustle into a permanent storefront. From jewelry stores and fragrance companies to restaurants and gift shops, many of our locals have found big success in small movements.

THE UNEXPECTED PATH Leslie Sanchez started her popup venture selling facemasks and 3D-printed items at Vegan Soulstice in Stockton in the fall of 2020. By March 2021, she opened The Little Shop on the Mile, the space formerly occupied by Haven Kiyoko Kids where she sold some of her items. For months the transition was in process, but less than one year after making her first market appearance, Leslie was up and running, creating a home for other female makers to thrive.
“Running a small business isn’t something you do entirely on your own, and I’ve been fortunate to have a family that’s encouraged me, celebrated the wins, and helped me through the challenges. Their support has made it possible for me to keep showing up and do what I love,” – Leslie Sanchez
“Taking over the business felt like an opportunity to preserve something meaningful while continuing to support local makers and create a welcoming place for the community,” she says. While Leslie’s venture took off quickly, she doesn’t regret taking baby steps to get started. “Starting small through popups helped me build something rooted in community from the very beginning,” she says. “I wasn’t just selling products, I was meeting people, building relationships, and becoming part of a growing local maker community.” While owning a brick and mortar wasn’t her original goal, it’s all kind of landed in a way that makes sense for Leslie’s life. She promotes positive work-life balance and speaks openly about building confidence in herself through the years. “Over time, I’ve learned to trust myself more, embrace the unexpected, and recognize that growth often comes from the moments you can't plan for.”
Today, Little Shop on the Mile sells goods from more than 80 artists and small businesses, many women owned. While plenty of the makers are local, or at least from California, she has started to support small businesses outside of the state as well, selling artist-made goods such as mugs, keychains, jewelry, and more. “Small business ownership takes a lot of resilience, determination, and the ability to pivot when things don’t go exactly as planned,” says Leslie. “There are a lot of unknowns along the way, but I’ve learned that you figure things out one step at a time.” Leslie’s journey is one example of how rolling with the punches can land you somewhere you never planned to be. Instead of starting with one concept and moving forward without change, she learned to pivot. She started by selling her own works at local makers markets and eventually became a permanent space where others could start their own journeys. Who knows, maybe some of her artists will open their own brick and mortar locations in the future.

SUCCESS DOESN’T HAPPEN IN A STRAIGHT LINE Sam Zanarini, the owner of Soy Into You, a clean-burning candle and fragrance company, didn’t follow a straight path to opening her shop on Sacramento Street in Lodi. What started as a prayer answered, eventually turned from pop-up candle shop to co-owner of a brick and mortar business back to a pop-up venture and eventually turned into a fragrance production with its very own storefront. “I never viewed that experience as a failure,” Sam says of her first shop attempt. “If anything, it became one of the greatest learning opportunities in my journey. Failure is necessary for growth, and without that experience, I don't think I

would have the storefront I have today.” After returning to the pop-up grind, Sam went all in. She was working early mornings, late nights, and weekends getting her name out there. “Preparing inventory, loading and unloading booths, and meeting customers face-to-face. It was never just about selling candles,” she says. It’s been just over a year since Sam embarked on a partnership with Earth & Wares, creating a signature store scent. “As the year went on, our partnership continued to grow, and so did my business within their space,” says Sam. When Earth & Wares decided to pursue new opportunities, they offered their location up to Sam, who now runs Soy Into You out of it, no longer sharing with another company.
“That was the moment I knew it was time,” Sam says. “Taking that leap from being part of a shared space to owning an entire storefront on my own was definitely scary, but I truly believe some doors open for a reason. I knew I had to walk through it.” While Sam now has a permanent space to sell her goods, including the soy candles that started it all, she is still invested in the pop-up markets. Despite a thriving location dedicated to fragrance products and makeyour-own-candle workshops, Sam says she can’t imagine giving up the pop-ups, which seem to compliment her business model well. “They’re still one of my favorite ways to connect with the community,” she says.
“I don’t believe there’s ever a perfect time to make the jump. It will always feel scary because it’s a big investment, both financially and emotionally,” – Sam Zanarini

A FULL CIRCLE PASSION For Johnny Khammanh, starting a pop-up business was in his blood. “I’ve been selling food at events and parks with my parents ever since I was 7 years old. They used to prep during our school hours and we would load up our van after school with my siblings and head out to the park and set up station,” he recalls. The grind stopped after his dad died and Johnny turned to sales. But in 2019, his past called him back. He financed a concession trailer and started his Thai restaurant Johnny Wokker out of it. After six months, he nearly quit, but decided to keep going, selling food consistently on El Dorado Street and Swain Road. “We [showed] up every day and people started showing up as well,” Johnny says. “After three-and-ahalf years of working with the concession trailer, we got the opportunity to open our brick and mortar.” As far as proof of concept, the long daily line at the trailer told Johnny he was ready to support a larger operation. “Starting from the bottom has taught me many lessons,” says Johnny. “Mistakes will come along the way but as long as you keep pushing yourself, you will get closer than yesterday. Be patient, be positive, be relentless, and be innovative. There’s an opportunity progress will come along with it.” Today, Johnny Wokker serves the community daily from its March Lane location, turning out Thai favorites such as drunken noodles, fried rice, and more in a casual setting. He is open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days per week.

FOLLOWING IN FAMILY FOOTSTEPS Stepping into Sarai Campos’ Sacramento Street jewelry store feels serene. Her gentle designs and feminine touch look expensive yet accessible, and the space is so dreamy, shopping there is akin to escaping the outside world. Originally selling at local markets under the name Moka, MOKA by Sarai opened its Lodi storefront in August 2025. “I always felt a strong desire to create something meaningful and to step away from the idea of being tied to an eighthour work schedule that didn’t truly make me happy,” Sarai says. Inspired by a family filled with entrepreneurs, the concept of being her own boss and creating something from nothing wasn’t new, but the desire to
prove to herself that her dreams could be reality pushed her forward. “As an immigrant, the journey has been both exciting and challenging. Starting over in a new country and finding my own path hasn’t always been easy. But I never allowed the language or the circumstances to become limitations,” Sarai says. For three years prior, Sarai sold her colorful charm bracelets and chunky beaded jewels at markets throughout San Joaquin County and beyond. She curated a beautiful social media presence and shared her delicate floral charms and sentimental collections to the masses. “My journey began with pop-up events. They gave me the opportunity to start small and share my products
with the community, and I will always be grateful for that,” Sarai says. “But I often felt limited. There was so much more I wanted to show people. I couldn’t bring my full collection, all of my creations, or fully express the vision I had for my brand. I always felt like people were only seeing a small piece of what I could truly offer.” As customers continually asked after a storefront, Sarai began to imagine a world where that was possible, and in 2025, she was offered a retail space. “Some of the best decisions I’ve made in life have come from listening to that inner voice that tells me to keep moving forward, even when I don’t have all the answers,” Sarai says. “Sometimes, you just have to start.”

JUST A SMALL SAMPLE While each of the featured spaces got its beginning as a pop-up or mobile business, they are just a few examples of the regional hotspots that started in a similar fashion. Guantonios Wood Fired in Lodi opened its doors in 2020 after a full decade as a mobile business, featuring one of the first wood fired food trucks in the state. Fuego Prime in Lodi is the result of a successful food truck enterprise featuring two mobile kitchens. Today the two trucks still serve tacos, award-winning birria, and other Mexican dishes in Morada and Stockton, while in Lodi the food has been offered as a sit-down experience since May 2025. Green Papaya has been open on Pacific Avenue since 2013, after years as a popular Lao and Thai food truck. “Something I tell all new small business owners: Be 100% committed to the vision of what you want your place to be,” Nick Guantone says. “If not, when the critics come (that includes family, friends, and online self-proclaimed foodies) you'll question your direction and pivot towards the few. You must be so confident in the path you're on no one can knock you off or change your course.” SJMAG.COM

A HOBBY TURNED HUSTLE For Amanda Zimmerman and Selena Moffett, a shared passion for reading led to Midnights Bookshop. Spending time together in a local book club, they had independent dreams of opening a bookstore. Last summer, Amanda and Selena decided to test the waters with a popup mobile book venture. Admittedly, they weren’t sure if the Lodi community would support another bookstore, but they at least wanted to try. Overwhelming support for the business, which popped up at the Lodi Farmers Market as well as breweries and wineries around town, gave them proof of concept and by fall, they were looking for a permanent space. In January, the duo signed a lease on Kettleman Lane and on April 17, they opened to the public. “Without fail, each time we popped up, people would ask, ‘Where is your physical store?’ After many conversations, we knew that Lodi wanted a space to browse books and build community through their love of reading,” Amanda says. Even though the vision was always to own a brick and mortar, Amanda and Selena protected their investment by starting small. The connections they built during their run as a pop-up

undoubtedly helped to build the brand that eventually became Midnights. “Little by little, people began following us online and showing up specifically to shop our books and bookish merchandise,” Amanda says. “It was incredibly rewarding to see familiar faces return and to feel that support as we worked toward opening our shop.” Amanda and Selena also used the beginning stages of their business to hone in on what customers wanted most so that by the time they were purchasing merchandise for a bigger space, they had a good handle on what would draw interest. “From hauling our pop-up tent and books to each event, to late-night preparations before opening to planning events at the bookshop, every part of the journey has been meaningful,” Amanda says. “Whenever we felt tired or worn out, something special would remind us why we do it, whether it was a wonderful conversation with a customer about a book we both loved or seeing the shop full of people on opening day. Those moments fill our hearts with warmth and bring us so much joy.” One bonus of the permanent space? Amanda and Selena are looking forward to hosting events at Midnights—an offering that wasn’t available to them as a pop-up only business.

pending time in Italy feels like a no brainer. Dramatic landscapes, rich history, and an abundance of our favorite foods all in one place? Sign us up! Many Italian vacations start in Rome, Italy’s capital and the most populated metro. It’s easy to fly into and allows convenient access by car, plane, or train to many of the country’s other best locales. In Rome, find a balance of historic landmarks, delicious eateries, and worthy tourist stops to fill your time. There’s undoubtedly plenty to see and do here—but you can also check off your biggest bucket list items in a few days if you’re short on time.
THE BIG LANDMARKS. A first time trip to Rome should include some of the city’s most admired landmarks. You may not have time to see them all as Italy houses 61 total UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Rome is home to more of them than any other Italian city. The Colosseum, also one of the seven wonders of the world, is among them, but so is The Pantheon, a 2,000-year-old temple that operates today as a church; the Roman Forum built by Juluis Caesar between Palatine and Capitoline hills; Castel Sant’Angelo with religious ties to the archangel

Michael; several piazzas and basilicas; and more. Luckily, Rome is a very walkable city and, while it may take some time, you can make your way from one end to the other. You can even walk to Vatican City to tour the church and see the Sistine Chapel and neighboring St. Peter’s Basilica, shopping stalls along the River Tiber on your way. Other notable landmarks include The Spanish Steps, Villa Borghese Gardens, the Trevi Fountain, and the Capuchin Crypts. Many of the landmarks get harried during peak times, so exploring outside of popular windows will make it easier to snap uninterrupted photos or at least take in the views a little more peacefully. In such a big—and famous—city, some crowds are guaranteed, but heading to the Trevi Fountain to toss in your coin between midnight and 4 a.m. proves less hectic (remember to hold it in your left hand and toss over your right shoulder) and heading up the Spanish Steps from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. is also recommended, just be aware you’re not allowed to take a seat. Expert Tip: Taberna serves $5 cocktails at a walk-up window a one-minute walk from the Trevi. One way to knock out many of the major landmarks and learn more about the baroque fountains and other hidden gems throughout Rome is to book a walking tour. Websites like freewalkingtour.com and guruwalk.com offer free tours where all you have to do is tip your guide. One of my favorite, not-so-hidden gems is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a fountain found in the

Spanish Square. It was created to resemble a half sunken ship based on a legend that says the River Tiber once flooded and carried a small boat into the square. It was also created as part of an initiative to build a fountain in every piazza in the city, so there isn’t exactly a shortage of them to ogle.
THE OTHER NON-NEGOTIABLES. When visiting Italy, must-dos include sampling the local cuisine. I’m not sure any visit can be marked complete without pasta, pizza, and gelato. There are countless eateries that serve all of these specialties, and some are tourist traps and some are not. The closer you are to major monuments and the busier parts of the city, the more large menus printed in English and hosts ushering you into the restaurants you will see. Expert Tip: If you see fettuccini alfredo on the menu, it’s catered toward tourists. Instead focus on eating as the locals do. Outdoor menus and English translations don’t mean a place is bad or inauthentic. The best meal I had did lack all of these red flags though, existing in a small corner of a more

remote corner of Rome and serving a short list of delicacies with no English translation. There were plenty of people speaking Italian in the tiny restaurant and a chalkboard held the daily menu. It was called La Fiaschetta and it was divine. I could not recommend the carbonara (a very popular Roman dish) more. Of course there are many restaurants with these same charms, you just have to search them out. And if you’re in a populated square, stick to the more Roman items when you can such as cacio e pepe and amatriciana. Apulian Street Food is a few blocks from St. Peter’s Basilica but just far enough to get an authentic experience. Again, very little English is spoken and the cute outdoor patio even has chess tables that seemed perpetually in use. This is a great place for a midday charcuterie and spritzes that won’t break the bank. Sandwiches are another staple throughout many parts of Italy and Rome is no different. You’ve likely seen these flat and fluffy foccacia sandwiches stuffed with meat and cheeses—and occasionally a few other ingredients. Not far from The Spanish Steps, Salumaio serves easy and inexpensive versions.

Sourcing the best gelato often means avoiding the colorful mounds that look like they were shipped in from Las Vegas and instead choosing shops where the dessert fits snugly in its tins. Via dei Banchi Vecchi (not far from La Fiaschetta) not only makes some of the best flavors in town, some topped with a delicate wafer, but carries with it a tale as old as time. It is, after all, housed in a tower that was once rumored to be the home of Giulia Tofana, a woman responsible for helping other women poison their evil husbands using aqua tofana, a tasteless and odorless substance. As a big city, nightlife in Rome is on every corner. Italians eat late and therefore restaurants serve well into the night, as do neighboring bars. You can grab a glass of quality vino or a crisp spritz practically any time. The speakeasy scene proves fun. For a few euro, you can become a member at Jerry Thomas. You’ll need the password of the day (available online) and you may have to wait if you’re without a reservation, but once inside, the quaint tables and quality cocktails create a magical atmosphere. Nearby there is also Embassy of Patron, a second speakeasy in the city.
Almost anywhere you grab a drink, before or after dinner, you’ll be offered small snacks such as nuts, cheeses, olives, or a selection of meats and crackers. Of course, drinks with a view are also held in high regard. With all of the ancient architecture throughout Rome, drinking it all in whenever you can is paramount. There are quite a few rooftop bars, including Mun Rooftop Cocktail Bar located on the eighth floor of the Double Tree by Hilton Rome Monti hotel. The panoramic terrace opens to stunning white columns and ornate sculptures that are perfectly visible in the daytime but also sparkling at night. Since in Rome you can drink on the streets, you can also ask for a to-go beverage wherever you visit and sip while you explore the city.
TOURS AND TOURIST TRAPS. Some tourist attractions are attractive for a reason. Just because something is popular with visitors, doesn’t make it a time suck. My suggestion is to simply find balance between the two. Only book tours for a few of your must-dos and bounce between what’s for tourists and what’s more appealing to locals. Crazy Pizza is one such tourist trap
worth the extra money. “Home of the spinning pizza,” chefs emerge from the kitchen sporadically to twirl giant pizza dough circles above patrons’ heads choreographed to upbeat music played by a live DJ. You can even swing your napkin a la Mamma Mia while taking in the black and white portraits of celebrities placed around the restaurant. Limone shops throughout Rome typically advertise free limoncello tastings and also serve sorbets housed inside of hollowed out lemons for aesthetic photos and a delicious treat on a hot day. The limoncello is good and can be taken home by the bottle. A less conventional kind of tour is one way to see the city through an entirely different lens. Dark Side City Tours hosts evening walking itineraries that tell of the more sinister legends that bubble underneath the surface of Rome’s lively atmosphere. Learn of Campo Di’Fiori, a busy square filled with colorful flowers and restaurants that spill out onto the streets. In the center sits a sculpture of Giordano Bruno, a man who held a grudge against the church and was executed in that square—along with many others, and other tales of murder and manipulation spanning centuries.
TIPS FOR A SEAMLESS ADVENTURE. Transportation is different in Italy, with less of an emphasis on rideshare apps and a stronger reliance on walking or taking taxis. Because of the transportation difference, staying within Rome city limits cuts down on travel time, but you don’t necessarily want to be near the Pantheon or Colosseum where crowds tend to gather. Instead choose a boutique hotel in a less populated area, such as near the Spanish Steps. You will still be in the heart of it all, walking out of your boutique accommodations directly onto busy cobblestone streets and grabbing late night drinks as you make your way back at the end of a long day of sightseeing. It’s also important to book tours early. Popular monuments sometimes book up the day tickets are released, routinely opened a couple of months before the date. If you wait until day of, the lines can be relentless. Lastly, water costs money at restaurants and bars in Rome, but you can take advantage of free water fill stations throughout the city. Pack a collapsible and refillable water bottle to carry just in case.

The Avenue Grill in Lodi: A Timeless Classic
THE RESTAURANT HAS CONSISTENTLY SERVED GREAT BREAKFAST AND LUNCH SINCE 1996 BY REBEKAH MOAN
T
he Avenue Grill in Lodi is the sort of place where people eat breakfast together six days a week for years. It’s the sort of place where servers know people’s names and orders. It’s the sort of place that follows the motto, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” Avenue Grill was started in 1996, and it’s still going strong, regularly winning the accolade of “Best Breakfast” in Lodi. Co-owner Nichole Abdon says, “We have stayed true to using fresh, Grade A ingredients. Other places have changed the amount of food they serve or the quality, but I’ve stayed with the quality and quantity. That’s a big reason why people continue to come here.” Another reason is the community feel of
the restaurant – the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Nichole and her husband Josh, who also owns the restaurant, have 26 staff members; four of the servers have been with the restaurant for more than 10 years – some as long as 20 – and the same is true of two cooks. “They get along with the regulars and with each other,” Nichole said. “It’s a family affair for sure and the community is everything to us.” The atmosphere at Avenue Grill is relaxed. In addition to the charming and cozy interior, the restaurant welcomes four-legged companions on its patio – and it has water bowls and doggie treats so furry friends are fed and watered too. For the humans, Avenue Grill has all the breakfast staples: fluffy pancakes and

hearty omelets, but the most-ordered items are the potato platter and the Avenue quesadilla. While best-known for its breakfast, the restaurant also serves lunch. The mostordered items from the lunch menu are the California chicken sandwich, which is a French roll stuffed with a chicken breast, bacon, avocado spread, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mayonnaise, and the BBQ bacon cheeseburger. The Abdons haven’t changed the menu since they purchased the restaurant nine years ago, but they do offer specials during the week, like huevos rancheros and waffles. They’ve kept things the same mostly because the customers, the staff, the food – all of it works exactly as it is
