Celebrating International Education Week
International Education
By: Mitchell Furumoto
Week
This year Sanford Burnham Prebys joined educational institutions across the country in celebrating International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education, which is held in November to celebrate our international diversity and global ties.
DEI Lunch & Learn Fishman Fund Award Ceremony
Our inaugural IEW Alumni Success Stories panel featured four former Sanford Burnham Prebys postdoctoral researchers who STEM Shadow Day have gone into successful careers in their home countries: two who moved on to faculty positions in academia and two who GSBS Holiday Luncheon moved into industry. We greatly appreciate our alumni speakers, Dr. Chandan Singh, Dr. Caroline Stienne, Dr. Julia Westman, and Dr. Marcin Poreba, who joined us at different hours of the Trainee Accomplishments day and night via Zoom to generously share their experiences transitioning from a postdoc position into their current roles, Postdoc & Graduate provide insights into the academic and private sectors, and Student Counts answer questions from current postdocs and graduate students. They talked about how their postdoctoral training experiences at the Institute helped prepare them and the professional development opportunities they leveraged to move on in their careers. Dr. Westman emphasized how she believed the Torrey Pines Leadership Development Program at Sanford Burnham Prebys prepared her for eventually leading her scientific team. We look forward to growing our International Education Week lineup with your participation; we welcome ideas for next year’s programming. See next page for a look at our Alumni Panel and see where they are now!
