US President Donald Trump has said he is "not satisfied" yet with the terms of the deal being negotiated with Iran.
He said Tehran was "very much intent" on reaching an agreement to end the conflict, but added "so far they haven't gotten there", repeating Washington's willingness to resume strikes if one is not reached.
His remarks came after Iranian state TV reported what it said were details of a draft agreement, which included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of US forces from the region.
The White House branded the text a "complete fabrication".

Congo Traveler in Ahmedabad Tested for Ebola
A 36-year-old foreign national who travelled to India from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was on Tuesday night admitted to the Isolation Ward for Ebola at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after displaying symptoms resembling viral haemorrhagic fever. His blood samples were dispatched to National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV) in Pune, to test for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said the man arrived in India at the Mumbai International Airport on May 18. He stayed in the city for five days, till May 22. He then travelled to the Union Territories of Silvassa (DNH) and Daman and stayed there for four days, till May 25. On May 25, he travelled to Vadodara in Gujarat and stayed at the Express Hotel.

A 25-year-old Gujarati man has been arrested in the U.S. state of Illinois after allegedly pulling a handgun on police officers during a traffic stop in the village of Hoffman Estates.
According to the Hoffman Estates Police Department, the accused, identified as Dhruv Patel, was stopped on May 14 at around 6:41 p.m. after officers spotted him riding a motorcycle without a valid registration plate in the 5700 block of River Birch Drive.
Police said officers discovered Patel was driving with a suspended license. As officers attempted to take him into custody, he allegedly became aggressive and pulled a handgun from inside his sweatshirt, pointing it toward officers at the scene.
Authorities said officers immediately intervened and prevented Patel from firing the weapon. Additional police units arrived shortly afterward and helped disarm and arrest him following a brief struggle.
Several officers suffered minor injuries during the incident, police said. Patel was not injured and was later taken to a
local hospital for medical evaluation.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office has approved multiple felony charges against Patel, including unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault on police officers, and resisting arrest.

Toronto/Brampton: Canadian police have arrested 17 Indian-origin men in connection with a major organized crime and extortion network allegedly targeting South Asian business owners in Canada and the United States.
The arrests were made by the Peel Regional Police as part of a special Extortion Task Force investigation launched in December 2025.
The probe involved several agencies, including the Federal Bureau
of Investigation, Canada Border Services Agency, and Ontario Provincial Police.
Investigators said the accused were linked to an international gang known as “For Brothers,” allegedly operating in Brampton, Mississauga, British Columbia, and parts of California. Police claim the group used threats, shootings, and arson attacks to extort money from South Asian-owned businesses, including restaurants and trucking companies.
Authorities connected the suspects to 24 criminal incidents and filed 106 charges. Raids led to the seizure of firearms, illegal drugs, fake IDs, phones, and SIM cards.
Police said the violence created fear within the South Asian community, especially among Punjabi business owners. Some suspects may also face deportation proceedings after their criminal cases conclude.

According to surveillance footage, the attacker briefly spoke to staff at the counter before suddenly opening fire and fleeing after the robbery. The tragic incident has triggered grief and anger not only in her native village but also among Gujaratis settled abroad, especially those involved in motel, gas station, and convenience store businesses.
Meghnaben leaves behind her husband, daughter Nakshi, and son Smit. As news reached Jentral village, residents gathered to support the grieving family. Community leaders say such incidents are becoming alarmingly frequent, particularly targeting small businesses owned by Indian and Gujarati immigrants.
With Meghnaben’s death, community members claim at least eight Gujaratis have lost their lives in similar robberies and shootings in the United States within the past year. Previous incidents in Virginia, South Carolina, and other states also involved motel and store owners from Gujarat, including members of the Patel community.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices in Delhi have been increased by Rs 2 per kilogram. This is the fourth hike since May 15. Following the latest revision, CNG will now cost Rs 83.09 per kg in the national capital.
The last three revisions were as follows: a hike of Rs 2 on May 15, Re 1 on May 18, and Re 1 on May 23. In total, prices have been raised by Rs 6 in the last 11 days.

She has been charged with Level 4 felony fraud, Level 5 felony theft and Level 6 felony impersonation of a federal agent. CBP Urges Great Lakes Boaters to Report Arrivals via ROAM
DETROIT, MI – Boating season is underway across the Great Lakes region, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations is reminding travelers about pleasure boat reporting requirements. Operators of small pleasure vessels arriving from a foreign port or location — including vessels that have visited a hovering vessel or received merchandise outside territorial waters — must immediately report their arrival to CBP upon landing in the United States. Boaters seeking a faster and more convenient way to report their arrival or apply for a registered boater program can use the CBP ROAM™ mobile app, available free through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app allows pleasure boaters to report their U.S. entry directly through a smartphone or tablet and serves as an alternative inspection system that satisfies the legal requirement for a face-to-face inspection under 8 CFR 235.1, with some exceptions. Exceptions include:
• Travelers who require an I-94
• Travelers who must pay duties on imported goods
• Other circumstances, as applicable Travelers using the app enter their biographical information, vessel details and trip information for CBP review. Once processed, users receive push notifications and emails with their admissibility decision and any additional instructions.

Los Angeles ICE arrest puts Indian national at risk of deportation
LOS ANGELES, CA - A 26-year-old Indian national, Parminderpal Singh, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles, the agency announced on May 24. Singh is facing formal deportation proceedings and will remain in ICE custody pending the completion of immigration formalities.
According to ICE, Singh has an extensive criminal record that includes allegations of vehicle theft, grand theft, trespassing, and vandalism. The agency said these charges prompted the initiation of removal proceedings against him.
In a post on X, ICE Los Angeles stated, “ICE Los Angeles arrested Parminderpal Singh, 26, of India, May 21. Singh’s criminal record includes vehicle theft, grand theft, trespassing and vandalism.”
The agency added, “He is in ICE custody pending removal.”
Singh’s arrest comes amid intensified immigration enforcement efforts targeting undocumented immigrants, particularly those with criminal records. Federal immigration authorities have increasingly publicized such arrests on social media as part of broader enforcement messaging. ICE also shared Singh’s photographs online while highlighting his alleged criminal history.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, more than 2,400 Indian nationals have been deported or repatriated from the United States since January 2025. Indian officials have consistently maintained that India supports legal migration pathways while opposing illegal immigration.

ARLIINGTON HTS, IL - FIA-Chicago represented the Indian American community at the Memorial Day Parade held in Arlington Heights, Illinois, on May 25, joining local residents and public officials in honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. According to an official release from the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), Arlington Heights is a community that has lost 67 residents in military service. The organization said Memorial Day serves as a reminder to honor those “who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom” and described the observance as a day of “gratitude, reflection, and tribute to the brave men and women whose sacrifices safeguard our future.”
FIA-Chicago participated alongside several Indian American community leaders and representatives from cultural and religious organizations. STANFORD, CA - Indian-origin medical students Rishik Bethi and Rayyan Darji have been named among the new leaders of Stanford University’s Surgery Interest Group for the 202627 academic year, the organization announced May 21.
Stanford’s Surgery Interest Group, known as SIG, also appointed Brianna Brasko and Brenda Yu as co-leads for the upcoming academic year. The student organization promotes surgery as a career, expands surgical education for medical students, and creates opportunities for students interested in surgical specialties.
SIG leaders work with Stanford’s Department of Surgery, faculty mentors, residents, and students to organize programs and activities focused on surgical education and mentorship. Bethi, a first-year medical student at Stanford, is originally from Dallas and New Orleans. He attended Vanderbilt University, where he majored in neuroscience and medicine, health and society.

BOSTON, MS - Indian American biostatistician Debashis Ghosh has received the 2026 L. Adrienne Cupples Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service in Biostatistics from the Boston University School of Public Health.
Presented annually by the university’s Department of Biostatistics, the award honors a biostatistician whose academic achievements reflect the legacy of late professor L. Adrienne Cupples, known for her contributions to statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology. Ghosh, a professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, was recognized for mentoring doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, advancing statistical science, and applying biostatistical methods in areas including cancer genomics, pediatric autoimmune disease, and healthy aging.

CHICAGO, IL -The SEWA International Chicago Chapter hosted its first-ever Annual Gala on Saturday, May 16, at the Pearl Banquet & Conference Center, bringing together dignitaries, community leaders, supporters, and volunteers to celebrate service, compassion, and community impact.
The gala highlighted SEWA’s growing initiatives and partnerships across local communities, with a focus on key programs including Sponsor a Child (SAC), SHE, LEAD — Leadership, Empowerment and Development of youth — Senior Sewa, and Serve 9/11.
The event was attended by Consul (Press, Information & Culture) Sanjeev Kumar Pal, along with several distinguished guests and community leaders. The evening featured inspiring presentations and lively entertainment by singer Vivek Aggarwal, magician Saloni Nahar, and DJ Bharat Oza.
Guests were also inspired by a motivational address from Tori Franklin, a four-time national champion in the triple jump, who spoke about perseverance,

Indian Callers, US Operatives Charged In Massive Tech-Support Fraud
PROVIDENCE, RI – A federal investigation into India-based techsupport fraud operations has led to multiple convictions and guilty pleas from two former U.S. telecom executives accused of helping route scam calls targeting Americans.
The investigation, launched in 2020, resulted in the convictions of Sahil Narang, Chirag Sachdeva, Abrar Anjum and Manish Kumar for their roles in telemarketing fraud schemes operating from India. Authorities also secured the conviction of Jagmeet Singh Virk in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
According to investigators, the call centers used deceptive pop-up alerts claiming victims’ computers were infected with malware or viruses. Victims were then directed to techsupport phone numbers, where operators allegedly convinced them to
pay for fake or unnecessary services. In several cases, scammers remotely accessed victims’ computers and obtained sensitive personal and financial information.
Federal officials said the fraud networks relied on telecommunications services provided by a U.S.-based company formerly led by Adam Young, 42, of
Miami, Florida, and Harrison Gevirtz, 33, of Las Vegas, Nevada. Young served as CEO, while Gevirtz was the company’s CSO.
Both men pleaded guilty in Rhode Island federal court to misprision of a felony after admitting they failed to report customers they knew were involved in tech-support fraud schemes.
Court documents revealed that between 2016 and 2022, the company supplied phone numbers, call routing, tracking and forwarding services to customers connected to the scam operations. Prosecutors alleged the executives continued servicing certain clients despite repeated complaints from consumers, telecom providers and law enforcement agencies. Investigators also claimed the pair advised some customers on how to avoid complaints and prevent account shutdowns. Authorities further alleged that Young and Gevirtz operated a Tunisia-based call center between 2016 and April 2022, where some employees engaged in similar fraudulent activities. “What the CEO and CSO of this well-known call tracking and analytics company did was downright despicable,” said Ted E. Docks, special agent in charge of the FBI Boston Division. The FBI estimates tech-support scams caused $2.1 billion in losses across the U.S. last year.

Indian-Origin UCLA Scientist Wins Prestigious $2 Million Brown Investigator Award
LOS ANGELES, CA –Anshul Kogar, an associate professor of physics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has been named one of eight recipients of the 2026 Brown Investigator Award, a prestigious honor established by the Brown Institute for Basic Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
The award provides up to $2 million over five years to support innovative mid-career scientists pursuing fundamental research in the physical sciences with potential long-term applications in chemistry and physics.
Kogar was recognized for his work on one of condensed matter physics’ enduring mysteries: understanding how energy is conserved when materials transition from a metallic state into a superconducting state at relatively high temperatures.
High-temperature superconductors are materials capable of conducting electricity without resistance at temperatures far higher than those required for conventional superconductors. Scientists believe advances in this field could eventually revolutionize energy transmission, computing, and advanced electronics.
At UCLA, Kogar leads a laboratory focused on discovering and controlling quantum phases of matter using ultrafast experimental techniques. His research utilizes ultrafast electron diffraction and time-resolved second harmonic generation — methods that allow scientists to observe and manipulate atomic and electronic behavior on
extremely short timescales.
Kogar’s interest in physics began long before his academic career in California. Before moving to the United States 14 years ago, he attended high school in Bangkok, Thailand, where a classroom lesson on the electron double-slit experiment sparked his fascination with quantum mechanics and the behavior of matter at microscopic scales.
He later earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from UCLA before completing a doctorate in condensed matter physics at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he used intense ultrafast light pulses to manipulate atomic structures in quantum materials.
US Lawmaker Criticizes Trump’s Tough New Green Card Rules
WASHINGTON, DC - Indian-
American Congressman Ami Bera has strongly criticised the Trump administration’s new immigration policy that could require many Green Card applicants legally living in the United States to leave the country and complete the process abroad. Calling the move disruptive and harmful, Bera said the policy would create fear and uncertainty for families, workers and employers who are already following immigration laws.
His remarks came after the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a memo stating that adjustment of status within the U.S. should be treated as an “extraordinary form of relief” rather than a routine immigration pathway. Under the revised policy, many applicants may now be forced to pursue consular processing in their home countries instead of remaining in the U.S. during the Green Card process.
USCIS spokesman Zach Kahler defended the change, saying the administration was restoring the “original intent of the law” and that temporary visa holders seeking permanent residency should generally return home to apply unless exceptional circumstances exist. Bera argued that the administration was ignoring the reality of massive immigration backlogs affecting legally residing immigrants, especially highly skilled professionals on work visas. He warned that forcing researchers, doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs to leave during processing could damage the U.S. economy by disrupting innovation and reducing tax contributions.
The California Democrat, whose parents immigrated from India, said America benefits from immigrants who work hard and contribute legally. He also backed legal challenges against the policy, predicting courts may block its implementation.

The Brown Investigator program was established in 2023 through a $400 million gift from entrepreneur and philanthropist Ross M. Brown, a Caltech alumnus. According to the institute, the awards are intended to provide stable, long-term funding to researchers at a pivotal stage in their careers.
“My hope is that these awards will provide talented mid-career researchers with stable and secure funding at a moment in their careers when they are poised to make a significant impact in their field,” Brown said in a statement released by Caltech.
The 2026 investigators were selected after 24 research universities across the United States nominated tenured faculty members engaged in innovative research in the physical sciences. An independent scientific review board evaluated the nominees and recommended the final recipients.
USCIS to Approve ‘Adjustment of Status’ Only in Rare, Extraordinary Cases
WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a new policy memo reaffirming that, consistent with longstanding immigration law and immigration court decisions, foreign nationals seeking adjustment of status generally must complete the process through consular processing with the Department of State outside the United States. The memo directs immigration officers to evaluate requests on a case-bycase basis and consider all relevant factors when determining whether extraordinary relief is warranted.
“We’re returning to the original intent of the law to ensure foreign nationals navigate our nation’s immigration system properly,” USCIS spokesman Zach Kahler said. “From now on, a foreign national who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances. This policy allows our immigration system
to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes.”
Kahler added that processing applications through U.S. consular offices abroad would reduce the number of people who remain in the country unlawfully after being denied residency.
“Nonimmigrants, such as students, temporary workers and tourists, come to the U.S. for a limited time and for a specific purpose,” he said. “Their visit should not function as the first step in the Green Card process.”
According to USCIS, the policy is intended to shift more cases to the State Department’s overseas consular offices and allow the agency to focus its resources on other priorities, including applications involving victims of violent crime and human trafficking, as well as naturalization requests. USCIS said additional details are available in the policy memo issued to immigration officers.

FDA Warns Retailers Selling Illegal Tobacco Products That Look Like Everyday Products
WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued warning letters to eight retailers for selling unauthorized tobacco products, including nicotine pouches and dissolvable tobacco products designed to resemble candy, breath strips, and cough drops.
According to the FDA, the products featured labeling, advertising, and design elements that mimic everyday consumer goods, raising concerns that young children could accidentally ingest them or that minors could use them to hide tobacco use from parents, teachers, or other adults.

Failure to comply could lead to further enforcement measures, including injunctions, product seizures, and civil monetary penalties.
The enforcement actions follow recently issued FDA guidance outlining the agency’s priorities for electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and nicotine pouch products that do not have premarket authorization. The FDA stated that unauthorized tobacco products can undermine the regulatory system and expose consumers to
potentially harmful chemicals and ingredients that have not undergone scientific review.
The warning letters are part of the FDA’s broader effort to remove unauthorized tobacco products from the market, especially products that may appeal to children. To date, the agency has issued more than 800 warning letters to companies involved in manufacturing, selling, or distributing unauthorized tobacco products, as well as more than 1,000 warning letters to retailers for selling such products.
The FDA also maintains an updated list of tobacco products that may legally be marketed and sold in the United States. Retailers can access free educational materials from the agency, including posters, stickers, flyers, and wall calendars, to help support compliance with federal tobacco laws.

WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing banks and federal regulators to more closely examine whether undocumented immigrants are accessing financial services such as bank accounts, loans, and credit cards. The move is part of the administration’s broader effort to tighten restrictions on people living in the United States illegally.
The executive order instructs banking regulators and government agencies to identify risks linked to customers who may not have legal immigration status. However, the measure stopped short of requiring banks to collect citizenship or immigration information from all customers, a step the banking industry had strongly opposed. Earlier reports had suggested the White House was considering a mandatory system for verifying citizenship status when opening accounts.

MARTIN COUNTY, FL — Driving without a valid license is leading to more arrests across Florida’s Treasure Coast as the state tightens immigration and driver’s license regulations. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office told CBS12 that anyone caught driving without a valid license — regardless of immigration status — may face arrest. “If you don’t have a license, don’t drive,” the agency stated.
Florida has strengthened licensing requirements in recent years by requiring applicants to complete written driving exams in English and provide additional immigration-related documentation.
Immigration attorney Richard Hujber said the changes are making it more difficult for some immigrants to legally obtain licenses.
“There’s no interpreters, there’s no translations being done,” Hujber said. “You better know how to read and write and speak English to pass this test.”
Hujber acknowledged concerns about road safety and said he advises clients not to drive without licenses. However, he noted many immigrants are waiting years for asylum claims, work permits, or immigration cases to be resolved while still needing transportation for work, school, and medical appointments.
“This isn’t like New York City where you have reliable trains and subways,” Hujber said. “You drive in Florida for the most part.” He also said cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities through programs like 287(g) has led to more ICE holds after routine traffic stops.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office denied targeting immigrants, saying most arrests for driving without a license have “no immigration nexus whatsoever” and are tied to increased traffic enforcement as the county grows. Deputies, the agency said, stop drivers based on traffic violations — not immigration status.
Currently, banks do not collect data on customers’ citizenship or immigration status, making it difficult to determine how much risk undocumented
borrowers pose. Research from the Urban Institute estimated that only about 5,000 to 6,000 mortgages were issued using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs), which are commonly used by undocumented workers instead of Social Security numbers. The study also noted that banks are generally reluctant to lend to ITIN holders, while mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac rarely insure such loans.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently argued for stricter rules, questioning how banks could properly “know your customer” without knowing immigration status. Banking groups lobbied heavily against mandatory citizenship checks, warning they would increase paperwork and costs.
Immigration advocates say stricter banking rules could push undocumented immigrants out of the financial system, increasing the number of unbanked individuals. The administration has also taken additional steps limiting immigrants’ access to federal tax benefits, measures that experts say could affect DACA recipients and immigrants with Temporary Protected Status.
First Sikh Lady Appoiinteed to U.S. Religious Freedom Commission
WASHINGTON, DC– Dr. Gunisha Kaur, a physician and human rights researcher, has been recommended for appointment to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), becoming the first Sikh selected to serve on the federal panel.
The nine-member commission comprises appointees selected by the president and congressional leadership for two-year terms.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer announced Kaur’s recommendation for a two-year term on the independent bipartisan commission.
In a statement, Schumer said Kaur would bring expertise in medicine, research, and community leadership to the role.
Kaur is an anesthesiologist and medical anthropologist whose work has focused on displaced populations, including refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers. She currently serves as Associate

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom was established under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. The commission monitors religious freedom conditions abroad and makes policy recommendations to the president, Congress, and the State Department.

California Police Join CoHNA Safety Forum After Hindu Temple Attacks
District Attorney’s Office to discuss hate crime reporting, community safety resources, and legal procedures related to bias-driven incidents.
SAN JOSE, CA- Following four reported temple attacks in California, members of the Hindu community met with local law enforcement officials at a community safety event organized by the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) at Shreemaya Krishnadham Mandir in San Jose.
The event, titled “Suraksha,” brought together representatives from the San Jose Police Department (SJPD) and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to discuss hate crime reporting, community safety resources, and legal procedures related to biasdriven incidents.
SJPD Lieutenant Anthony Kilmer and Sergeant Kassey Padia explained the distinction between hate crimes and hate-motivated incidents. They said hate crimes
involve criminal acts driven by bias, while hatemotivated incidents may not meet the legal definition of a crime but are still documented by law enforcement. Officers encouraged community members to report all incidents, stressing that reporting helps authorities identify patterns, allocate resources, and prevent escalation. Attendees were also informed about emergency and non-emergency reporting procedures.
Representatives from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, including Chief Trial Deputy Daniel Okonkwo and Supervising Deputy District Attorney Adam Flores, outlined how cases move from police investigation to prosecution. They also highlighted victim support services available through the District Attorney’s Victim Services Unit
and the California Victim Compensation Board. Prosecutors reiterated District Attorney Jeff Rosen’s message that “hate has no home here,” emphasizing that hate crimes impact entire communities, not just individual victims.

First Disaster Response Vehicle in Texas Launched by Sewa International

Painted in Sewa’s signature colors, the mobile unit carries the organization’s motto, “Service to Humanity is Service to Divinity.” The trailer is stocked with essential emergency response equipment, including personal protective gear, shovels, mucking tools, helmets, safety vests, thermal insulated jackets, solar-powered generators, and other supplies commonly needed after floods, storms, and natural disasters. The fully equipped emergency operations vehicle can be deployed anywhere in Texas within hours and is expected to serve as a model for Sewa chapters across the country. The unveiling ceremony was led by Sewa San Antonio leadership, with volunteers dressed in the organization’s trademark yellow safety vests and hard hats. National board members and senior leaders also attended the launch. Sushma Bhatia Appointed To Bay Area Water Board
SACRAMENTO, CA – Cupertino resident Sushma Bhatia has been appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom to the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, according to an announcement from the Governor’s Office.
Bhatia currently serves as Global Business and Applied AI Director at Google. Her appointment requires Senate confirmation, and the position carries compensation of $250 per diem. Before joining Google, Bhatia held several strategy and consulting roles at Accenture and co-founded Dreeya. She also spent a decade with the San Francisco Department of the Environment, where she served in roles including Toxics Reduction Program Manager and Coordinator.
Bhatia earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. She also holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Southern California and an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley.

NAPCL - The IPL of Carrom in USA
The 2026 North American Premier Carrom League Championship transformed carrom from a traditional indoor pastime into a fast-moving team spectacle built on strategy, camaraderie, and competitive drama. Held May 16 and 17 at Sausalito’s Grand Ballroom in Garfield Heights, Ohio, the event brought together 60 players representing 10 franchise teams from across the United States and Canada in what continues to be one of the most ambitious formats attempted in North American carrom.
The tournament adopted an extensive round-robin format in which every team faced all nine opponents before advancing into the playoffs. Yet what truly separated NAPCL from a conventional carrom tournament was its franchise structure and tactical depth. Umakanth Pandurangaiah, the principal architect behind the concept, helped introduce a player draft, auction system, analytics, and strategic team management elements rarely associated with the sport. The involvement of technology in carrom is much like smartphones transforming communication. The essence of the game remains unchanged, but speed, connectivity, strategy, and engagement have all risen dramatically.
Each franchise operated under a 210-point salary cap and fielded six graded players from G1 to G6 tiers. Every round consisted of four singles matches and one doubles match. Captains were required to reshuffle lineups before every round, creating tactical battles long before the striker touched the board. Matchups, prediction, and positioning became just as important as pure shot-making ability.
That structure created a refreshing team-first atmosphere. A player could lose an individual match yet still celebrate because the team had secured the overall round. Lower-tier players became critical pieces of strategy rather than supporting cast members. Captains often won or lost rounds based on how effectively they deployed their G5 and G6 players.

exciting on a yearly basis,” Commissioner Umakanth Pandurangaiah said during the event, reflecting the optimism surrounding the league’s return. While NAPCL was first staged in 2019, the 2026 edition returned with a far more modern identity, where technology and analytics became as important to strategy as touch and precision on the board. The NYL Baazigars captured the Titans championship with a 9-6 victory over Board Masters in the final. Captain Ajay Arora, USA ranked number one player, dominated the weekend, completing the tournament undefeated at 14-0 in individual competition. The Ohio Super Kings finished third in the Titans division.
In the Challengers bracket, Phoenix Strikers, captained by the silent assassin, Rajeev Joshi, defeated the Northeast Pocketing Machines 5-2 to secure the title. US Carrom Association president Atul Bhave, representing Phoenix Strikers, produced the tournament’s only black slam, one of the standout moments of the weekend. Several memorable family storylines added warmth and emotion to the competition. Three generations of the Arora family participated in the event. Ajay Arora led the Baazigars, while his father Arun Kumar and seven-year-old Aarav Arora competed for the Northeast Pocketing Machines. Aarav became the youngest player in tournament history. In another emotional matchup, Abhiram Pinnelli faced his father Ramakrishna Pinnelli during the Challengers semifinal. Players traveled to Cleveland from multiple states and from Toronto, highlighting the rapid growth of organized carrom across North America. Organizers already expect expansion to 12 teams in 2027.
Traditional singles and doubles tournaments will always remain the foundation and main course of carrom. But much like a flavorful side dish adds color and excitement to a familiar meal, NAPCL brought something different to the table. The league blended strategy, teamwork, technology, pressure, and camaraderie into a format that pushed carrom beyond its traditional boundaries while still preserving the soul of the game.
New Low-Cost Grocery Stores Planned Across NYC
NEW YORK, NY — New York City officials have selected a Hunts Point development in the Bronx as the second location for the city’s municipal grocery store program, a major initiative aimed at reducing food costs and improving access to affordable groceries in underserved neighborhoods.
The announcement also expanded the search for future grocery store sites in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island through a new city portal inviting property owners to submit retail spaces for consideration. First unveiled in April, the municipal grocery program seeks to lower operating expenses by placing stores on city-owned land. City officials said $70 million in capital funding has been committed to building five stores — one in each borough — before the end of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first term.
Mayor Mamdani and the New York City Economic Development Corporation said the new 20,000-squarefoot grocery store will open at The Peninsula, a large redevelopment project at the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Facility site in the South Bronx.
“Making sure every New Yorker can buy fresh, affordable groceries in their own neighborhood is a key part of our affordability agenda,” Mamdani said. The Peninsula redevelopment will feature 740 affordable housing units, public open space, industrial and community facilities, along with the city-run grocery store.
Officials said Hunts Point was chosen because of ongoing economic challenges in the area. According to the administration, more than half of local households relied on public assistance in the past year, while 77 percent struggle to meet basic living expenses.
The Hunts Point grocery store is expected to open in 2027.
Rockefeller Foundation Names Ashvin Dayal as New COO
NEW YORK, NY -Ashvin Dayal has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of The Rockefeller Foundation and will assume the role Aug. 1, succeeding Natalye Paquin, who is retiring after nearly four years with the organization.
Dayal joined the foundation in 2008 and most recently served as senior vice president for power, overseeing global energy initiatives. As COO, he will oversee finance, legal affairs, human resources, information technology and foundation services, while managing teams and offices across the United States, Africa, Asia, Colombia and Italy.
He will also serve as president of RF Catalytic Capital, the foundation’s charitable entity focused on funding global development projects.
Rockefeller Foundation President Rajiv J. Shah said Dayal had demonstrated strong leadership, partnership-building and operational expertise during his 17 years with the organization. Shah said Dayal would help ensure the foundation has the systems and talent needed to address global challenges.
In a statement, Dayal said he looked forward to strengthening the foundation’s internal systems and partnerships while advancing its mission of improving lives worldwide.
Before his appointment, Dayal helped lead the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, launched in 2021 to expand electricity access and support energy projects in developing countries. The initiative operates in more than 30 countries through partnerships involving governments, development banks, investors and philanthropic organizations. Prior to joining The Rockefeller Foundation, Dayal spent more than 15 years with Oxfam in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, including work on recovery efforts following the 2004 Asian tsunami. He also led the foundation’s regional office in Bangkok and directed the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network, focused on helping cities prepare for climaterelated risks.
Dayal holds degrees from SOAS University of London and Johns Hopkins University. Paquin will transition into a special adviser role following her retirement.

CBP is encouraging travelers to confirm visa or ESTA requirements early, ensure passports are valid, and review rules regarding restricted items before departure. Travelers are also advised to declare food, plants, animal products, and currency upon arrival.
To support visitors, CBP launched COMPASS, an interactive virtual assistant, on April 1, 2026. The system has already answered over 25,000 travel-related questions. CBP is also preparing for increased private and charter aircraft traffic by updating aviation procedures and coordination measures ahead of the tournament.
HOUSTON, TX -The Houston Military Affairs Committee (HMAC) has chosen India as the featured country for its 2026 Annual Armed Forces Day Military Ball.
The event, held at the Houston Marriott Westchase, was organized to honor members of the U.S. military and veteran community.
Chaired this year by the United States Coast Guard, the event was attended by military officials, diplomats, veterans, and civic leaders.
According to HMAC, the event featured U.S. Representative Randy Weber, Rear Admiral Will E. Watson of the U.S. Coast Guard, and Consul General of India D.C. Manjunath as speakers.
In a statement, the Consulate General of India in Houston thanked HMAC for the recognition and acknowledged the leadership of Commander Eugene N. Tulich, chairman of HMAC, and Captain Nicole Rodriguez of the U.S. Coast Guard for organizing the event.
Representing India at the gathering, Consul General Manjunath delivered the keynote address, highlighting cooperation between India and the United States in defense, maritime security, emerging technologies, and people-to-people engagement.
