An Indian origin man was fatally shot by a man posing as a customer in the United States.

The entire incident was caught on CCTV camera.

Paresh Patel, the victim, was from Dingucha, a village in the state of Gujarat, in India.

The victim was in the shop, when the killer came to the shop and posed as a customer. The killer first tried to rob him of the money at the cash counter. Patel seemed to follow his instructions, however the killer shot him dead after robbing all the money. According to the Indian government, 86 Indian nationals were attacked or killed in various countries in 2023. Minister of state for external affairs

Kirti Vardhan Singh informed in the Parliament last December that out of the 86 Indian nationals attacked or murdered in 2023, 12 were in the United States, and 10 each were in Canada, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

ATLANTA, GA- Shankar Subramonian, founder of American Megatrends and IIT Madras alumnus, has do-nated $350,000 to Sankara Nethralaya to establish a Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) in Ettayapuram, Tamil Nadu. A longtime resident of Atlanta, he was honored at a Meet 'n Greet hosted by Sankara Nethralaya USA (Atlanta Chapter) on April 26 at the Johns Creek Event Center. The event recognized his philanthropic and technological contributions.

Bhadreshkumar Patel, a 34-year-old man from Gujarat, has been added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list for allegedly killing his wife, Palak Patel, in 2015 at a donut shop in Hanover, Maryland. Palak, 21, was reportedly struck multiple times with an object while working alongside Patel. CCTV footage showed the couple walking into the kitchen, after which Palak’s body was later found by a customer who alerted police.

Investigators believe the murder stemmed from Palak’s desire to return to India—something Patel strongly opposed. Both were living in the U.S. on expired visas. A federal arrest warrant was issued eight days after the incident. Patel faces multiple charges including first- and second-degree murder, assault, and possession of a dangerous weapon. His last known location was in Newark, New Jersey, but authorities suspect he may have fled to Canada or returned to India. He may be hiding with relatives. The FBI considers him "armed and extremely dangerous" and has increased his bounty from $100,000 to $250,000. Police and federal officials continue to urge the public for information, emphasizing the ongoing threat Patel poses while at large.

Four sticking points in Trump's 'big, beautiful' tax bill

US President Donald Trump's key legislative effort—a sweeping tax and spending bill— has stalled in Congress due to divisions within the Republican Party. Although the GOP holds narrow majorities in both chambers, internal disagreements have jeopardized the bill's passage.

1. Spending Cuts vs. Rising Debt

The bill merges extended 2017 tax cuts with spending reductions, but it may add $2.3 trillion to the national debt over a decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Fiscal conservatives, particularly the House Freedom Caucus, oppose the bill’s cost and are demanding deeper cuts.

2. Medicaid Work Requirements

The most controversial aspect involves changes to Medicaid. Initially set to start in 2029, work requirements would now begin in 2026. While

Canada, US Discuss Joining 'Golden Dome' Missile Shield: Carney

Toronto:

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday his government is talking to the US about joining President Donald Trump's future Golden Dome missile defense program.

The multilayered, $175 billion system would for the first time put US weapons in space. Mr Trump said the previous day he expected the system to be fully operational by the end of his term in 2029.

"Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is a good to have protections in place for Canadians," Mr Carney said. Mr Carney confirmed he's had talks with President Trump about it and said there are discussions with senior officials. Mr Trump said the Canadian government had contacted his administration indicating it wants to join the program and that he will work with Ottawa to ensure it contributes its "fair share."

some Republicans want stricter rules and limits on undocumented immigrants' access, others, like Senator Josh Hawley, oppose any Medicaid cuts, calling them "morally wrong."

3. State and Local Tax (SALT) Deductions

Republicans from high-tax states want to raise the $10,000 cap on SALT deductions. A tentative deal raises it to $40,000, but this has upset fiscal conservatives who want offsetting spending cuts.

4. SNAP and Food Assistance Cuts

The bill includes $300 million in cuts to SNAP (food stamps), increasing state responsibility for both benefits and administrative costs. It also proposes extending work requirements up to age 64. Critics argue these changes harm low-income Americans, especially in poor Republican-leaning states. Negotiations continue as internal GOP rifts threaten Trump's legislative agenda.

"Takes

Credit For Everything": Ex Trump Aide On India-Pak Mediation Claims

Washington: Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton on Wednesday dismissed President Donald Trump's repeated claims of playing a key role in stopping hostilities between nuclear neighbours India and Pakistan, saying it's "Trump being Trump" as he takes "credit for everything." Bolton also called India's action against Pakistan under 'Operation Sindoor' completely justifiable, saying New Delhi was entitled to act in self-defence against terrorist locations in Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 people.

While talking to news agency ANI, the former US official emphasised the need for Pakistan to control terror activities within its borders, warning of severe consequences if it fails.

The former NSA, however, noted that the US President might indeed have had a call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President JD Vance and State Secretary Marco Rubio, as "other countries might also be calling to see what they can do."

US accepts gifted Qatari plane to join Air Force One fleet

The US has accepted a plane intended for the Air Force One fleet from Qatar, a gift that has sparked criticism including from some of President Trump's biggest supporters. "The secretary of defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations," Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement on Wednesday.

The plane will need to be modified before it can be used as part of Air Force One - the president's official mode of air transport.

The White House insists that the gift is legal, but the announcement of the transfer a week ago caused huge controversy.

Hacker Steals Data From US Government Through App Used By Trump Aide

Washington:

A hacker who breached the communications service used by former Trump national security adviser Mike Waltz earlier this month intercepted messages from a broader swathe of American officials than has previously been reported, according to a Reuters review, potentially raising the stakes of a breach that has already drawn questions about data security in the Trump administration.

US Launches NuclearCapable Minuteman III In Doomsday Missile Test

Washington: Amid US President Donald Trump's plan for a nationwide missile defense system, the US Air Force launched a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Minuteman III, in a doomsday missile test on Wednesday. The missile was unarmed when it was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Trump ambushes S African leader with claim of Afrikaners being 'persecuted'

A White House meeting aimed at improving US-South Africa relations turned tense when President Donald Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with discredited claims of a “white genocide.” The meeting followed the US granting asylum to 59 white South Africans—mostly Afrikaners—which had already strained ties.

During a live press conference, Trump played a controversial video showing white crosses along a road, wrongly described as graves of murdered white farmers. The footage, widely circulated by right-wing groups, has not been verified. Trump also cited opposition politician Julius Malema’s inflammatory rhetoric and handed Ramaphosa stories about attacks on white farmers.

Netanyahu: All of Gaza to Be Under Israeli Control by End of Offensive

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the entire Gaza Strip will come under Israeli control by the end of the current military offensive. His statement signals a continuation of Israel’s aggressive operations in the region despite mounting international pressure for a ceasefire. Speaking at a press briefing, Netanyahu stated, "We are determined to eliminate Hamas' military capabilities and ensure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel." He emphasized that Israeli forces would not stop until they had full control over all of Gaza. The offensive, launched in response to Hamas’ attacks, has led to widespread destruction across the Palestinian enclave. Thousands have been killed and displaced, and humanitarian agencies warn of a looming catastrophe due to limited access to essential supplies. Israel’s military campaign has focused on dismantling Hamas' tunnel networks, targeting key strongholds, and striking suspected militant infrastructure. Netanyahu has rejected calls for a halt to the offensive, insisting that any pause would only allow Hamas to regroup. The announcement comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar to broker a ceasefire.

Ramaphosa denied the genocide claim, highlighting that violent crime affects all races in South Africa, with the majority of victims being Black. He

emphasized that Malema’s views are not government policy and pointed to white members of his delegation to refute the narrative.

Trump also incorrectly accused the

Days After India's Taliban Talks, China Meets Pakistan, Afghanistan

Days after Indian External Affairs

Minister S. Jaishankar held the first ministerial-level conversation with the Taliban’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, China swiftly organized a trilateral meeting with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Moderated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the informal meeting saw Pakistan and Afghanistan agreeing "in principle" to exchange ambassadors and

upgrade diplomatic ties. Wang also held separate bilateral meetings with Muttaqi and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, aiming to strengthen ties between Kabul and Islamabad.

China, which has accepted a Talibanappointed ambassador without formally recognizing the regime, appears keen to counter India’s growing engagement with Afghanistan. New Delhi maintains open diplomatic channels but has not formally recognized the Taliban government.

After the meeting, Pakistan’s foreign office welcomed the “positive momentum” in ties, while China reaffirmed its support for Afghanistan’s reconstruction and regional security cooperation. Muttaqi emphasized the importance of strengthening political and economic ties with both countries.

Zelensky accuses Russia of 'buying time' to stall truce talks

Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of "trying to buy time" to continue its war in Ukraine, a day after Donald Trump said progress towards a ceasefire had been made in a call with Vladimir Putin.

"If Russia continues to put forward unrealistic conditions and undermine progress, there must be tough consequences," Ukraine's president wrote on social media, adding that Kyiv

was ready to negotiate.

Following separate calls with Zelensky and Putin on Monday, Trump said truce talks between Russia and Ukraine would start "immediately".

Putin said he was ready to work on a "memorandum on a possible future peace agreement", but did not address calls for a 30-day pause in fighting.

On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said it was up to Kyiv to "make decisions" and respond to a proposed peace memorandum.

However, the Kremlin downplayed suggestions that negotiations were close, with Russian state news agencies citing spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying "there are no deadlines and there cannot be any".

Meanwhile, Zelensky launched a fresh round of diplomacy, speaking to Western allies in a bid to shore up support.

South African government of allowing land seizures and violence against white farmers. While Ramaphosa has signed a law allowing land expropriation without compensation under specific conditions, no land has been seized yet.

The encounter drew criticism, with former US ambassador Helena Humphrey calling it “humiliating” for South Africa. Afriforum, an Afrikaner group, denied producing the video shown but defended raising awareness about farmer safety.

The clash comes amid broader diplomatic tension, including US aid cuts and South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, which further strained the relationship. Despite the confrontation, Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s commitment to racial reconciliation.

Tanzania after police targeted by hackers

Access to the social media platform X has been restricted in Tanzania after some official accounts of government and private institutions were targeted by hackers.

On Tuesday, the official police account was compromised, with sexually explicit material and false information that the president had died being posted. The police dissociated itself from the information and said an investigation was under way to identify those responsible.

Hours later data from the internet monitoring organisation Netblocks showed that X was "unreachable on major internet providers" across the country.

Trump Snaps at Reporter Over Qatari Jet Question

Washington: Dismissing questions about the Pentagon's recent announcement to modify a Qatari Boeing 747 as a future Air Force One, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (local time) slammed the NBC reporter who made the question, calling him "terrible" and "not smart enough" to do his job. Trump, during a tense meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House, accused the reporter of diverting attention from more pressing issues, such as the violence and racist laws against white farmers in South Africa.

Gujarati-American Raj Mankad Wins Pulitzer for Exposing

Raj Mankad, a Gujarati-American journalist, has been honored with the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing as part of the Houston Chronicle's editorial team. The award recognizes their compelling series on the dangers of stalled freight trains in Houston's working-class neighborhoods, highlighting the tragic death of Milby High School student Sergio

Rail Dangers

Rodriguez. The editorials brought national attention to how blocked rail crossings delayed emergency services and disrupted daily life, prompting the Texas Senate to approve a $350 million grant for rail safety improvements.

Mankad's journey to journalism was unconventional. Initially pursuing a career in medicine, he shifted paths to follow his passion for storytelling and social justice. He earned a Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston and served as editor of "Cite: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston." His work often explores urban planning and community issues, aiming to amplify marginalized voices.

In addition to the Pulitzer-winning series, Mankad penned a provocative editorial titled "Display the Hindu Ten Commandments in Texas classrooms too," challenging proposed legislation to display Christian scripture in public schools.

Drawing from his Hindu upbringing, he advocated for religious neutrality and constitutional secularism in education. Mankad's dedication to addressing systemic inequalities and promoting pluralism underscores his belief in journalism's power to drive meaningful change.

Jaishankar: Pak Leaders Driven by Extremism

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar accused Pakistan’s leadership, particularly its Army Chief Gen Asim Munir, of being driven by an "extreme religious outlook" in the wake of a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS, Jaishankar said the attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 civilians dead — most of them tourists — was carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists who targeted victims based on their Hindu faith. "Twenty-six people were murdered in front of their families after ascertaining their faith. To create religious discord, deliberately an element of religion was introduced," he said.

Rohit Sharma Wanted MS Dhoni-Style Exit From Test Cricket, BCCI Rejected: Report

Rohit Sharma wanted to travel to England for the five-Test series and retire midway just like Dhoni had done during the 2014 tour of Australia, according to a report by Sky Sports. However, the offer was rejected by the BCCI and that reportedly led to the decision to retire ahead of the series.

"Selectors wanted consistency during the series and offered Sharma the opportunity to go to the series, but not as captain. He decided to retire instead," the report claimed. Rohit stunned everyone with his decision to retire from Test cricket and Kohli followed suit just few days later. As a result, the BCCI selectors face a tough challenge to fill the void left by the retirement of the two stalwarts of modern cricket.

The report further claimed that the BCCI selection committee held 'informal talk' with both Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as potential candidates to succeed Rohit as the next Test captain.

The selection committee is expected to announce the squad for the England series around May 23 and although there have been many media reports surrounding Bumrah and Gill leading in the captaincy race, nothing official has been confirmed till now.

"One selector at the BCCI has reservations

Top Indian Singles Player Sumit Nagal Misses French Open Qualification

India's top-ranked singles player, Sumit Nagal, suffered a disappointing secondround exit from the French Open qualifiers, losing 2-6, 4-6 to Austria's Jurij Rodionov on Wednesday at Roland Garros. The defeat not only ended Nagal's campaign in Paris but also marked the first time in 2025 that he will miss the main draw of a Grand Slam. Nagal, ranked 170th in the world, had begun his qualifying journey with a confident straight-sets win over American Mitchell Krueger. However, he couldn't replicate that form against the 225th-ranked Rodionov, who wrapped up the contest in one hour and 29 minutes.

The Austrian was the more composed of the two, especially in the key moments, and capitalised on Nagal's errors to progress. The first set saw Rodionov dominate with powerful groundstrokes and better court coverage, breaking Nagal twice to take it 6-2.

Rohit Sharma wanted to travel to England for the five-Test series and retire midway just like Dhoni had done during the 2014 tour of Australia, according to a report.

over giving Gill the captaincy, given that his place on the side is not guaranteed, and suggested he would be better suited to the vice-captaincy role," the report read. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar feels the high-octane IPL is the perfect training ground for future India captains,

providing the likes of Shubman Gill the required leadership experience before graduating to the highest level.

Gujarat Titans skipper Gill is expected to captain India on the Test tour of England following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Rishabh Pant is likely to

Jofra Archer Injured Again, Out of West Indies ODIs

Ahead of a busy Test summer, England have been handed an early blow with star pacer Jofra Archer ruled out of the three-match ODI series against West Indies starting May 29. The injury

means the 30-year-old, who was set to feature for England Lions in their match against India A in first week of June with an eye on a Test call-up, may have to wait for his turn.

Archer sustained the injury while playing for the Rajasthan Royals against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 4 in the 2025 IPL. England said he will “reassessed over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action”. The 30-year-old had been left out of the squad for the following threematch T20 series in order to play for England Lions against India A.

India-Pakistan Clash Uncertain, Reveals

BCCI Source Ahead of ICC Meet

The future of Indo-Pak cricket at ICC events is set to be discussed at the annual conference of the sport's governing body, scheduled in Singapore from July 17-20. Both countries only play each other at multi team events but the recent military conflict has fuelled speculation

over the future of the blockbuster clash in ICC competitions starting with next year's T20 World Cup to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. "The issue is bound to come up for discussion at the annual conference. While prospect of India and Pakistan not playing in ICC knockouts is unlikely, not drawing them in the same group, which has been the norm at ICC events, is a possibility," a BCCI source told PTI. India and Pakistan drawn in the same group of ICC events had become a given over the past decade but in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and subsequent showdown between the two armed forces, that could change.

be his deputy. Virat Kohli's retirement, which came just days after Rohit's decision, has left a massive void in the Test team. Gavaskar said it would take at least a couple of years for Gill and other potential leaders like Pant and Shreyas Iyer to become finished products.

"It would take a couple of years (to groom future leaders) to get to the level of our super captains (MS Dhoni, Rohit, Virat). All of them brought a different approach to captaincy," said Gavaskar in a response to a PTI query on Star Sports Press Room.

Pant is currently captaining LSG, while Iyer is leading the Punjab Kings in this IPL. "When you see Gill, Iyer and Pant, three main pretenders to Indian captaincy you see an amalgamation of all three (Dhoni, Rohit, Virat). Gill probably is more competitive, when there is a decision, he is asking the umpire right away. He is probably a lot more involved.

"Though Pant is behind the stumps, he is also very involved. Iyer too has been superb. All three have brought a lot of positivity in the way they have been captaining. "As a captain, nothing gets you more experience than pressure of a T20 game. It is the best training ground for captaincy," added the former India captain.

MI Seal Playoff Spot, Race For Top Two Finish Heats Up

Suryakumar Yadav's doughty 73 not out proved to be the difference as Mumbai Indians sealed the fourth and final play-off berth with a 59-run trouncing of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League in Mumbai on Wednesday. Suryakumar's masterclass — a 43-ball knock with seven fours and half a dozen sixes in adverse situation — paved the way for a dominating win. The five-time champions had not made the play-offs last year. Delhi Capitals, who came into this contest with their fair share of opportunity to reach the final four, saw the tables being turned on them when MI batters collected 48 runs off the last two overs.

But the visitors were also guilty of a meek reply in a do-or-die contest which had their top-order blown away in the powerplay, leaving the rest of the contest a mere formality.

Chasing 181, Delhi Capitals, who were without regular skipper Axar Patel in this game, rolled over for 121 in 18.2 overs with Sameer Rizvi (39) being the top scorer.

Trump meets Republican hard-liners in hopes of moving tax bill forward

President Donald Trump and House Republicans continued to negotiate a farreaching tax and spending bill on Wednesday, holding discussions at the White House ahead of a potential vote. Trump and his staff spent several hours with members of the House Freedom Caucus, who have refused to support a bill they say does not go far enough in cutting spending.

Many of Trump's top priorities are in the legislation: extending tax cuts passed in 2017, eliminating taxes on tips, spending more on defence and border security, and cutting government health care programmes.

Fortnite back on US Apple app store after ban lifted

Popular video game Fortnite is now available on Apple's app store in the US after being taken off the platform nearly five years ago.

The title was removed in August 2020 for violating Apple's policies by launching its own in-app payment system.

This would have bypassed a 30% commission that the technology giant charges on all in-app purchases. The move triggered a legal battle brought by Fortnite developer Epic Games, which called the fee unfair and accused Apple of running the app store as a monopoly.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the bill would add about $2.3tn (£1.7tn) to the US national debt over the next 10 years. Trump campaigned on promises to reduce the US budget deficit - meaning the annual gap between the government's tax revenue and its spendingwhich currently stands at around $36.2tn (£27tn). Negotiators worked through the night on Tuesday, including a meeting of a House committee which began at 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) Wednesday. Because Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House and Democrats uniformly oppose the legislation, Trump can only risk losing a handful of votes from his own party. China Curbs Rare Earths; EV Makers Face Shortage

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in India are facing a looming shortage of rare earth magnets following China's decision to tighten exports, industry sources said. The move has prompted several domestic EV makers to approach the Indian government for support and alternative sourcing solutions.

Rare earth magnets—primarily composed of neodymium and praseodymium—are essential components in EV motors, wind turbines, and other clean energy technologies. China currently dominates global production, accounting for over 80% of the world’s supply.

According to industry insiders, recent export restrictions by China have disrupted supply chains and led to rising prices, sparking concern among Indian automakers who rely heavily on imports for critical components.

Smaller startups and mid-sized manufacturers are particularly vulnerable due to limited stockpiles and weaker global procurement networks.

EV companies have urged the Indian government to explore new trade partnerships, increase domestic mining efforts, and invest in the recycling of rare earth materials. Some officials have also called for the fast-tracking of rare earth exploration projects within the country.

“We must reduce dependency on a single source,” said a senior executive from a leading EV firm. “This is a wake-up call for India to secure its place in the global green technology supply chain.”

The shortage comes at a time when India is aggressively pushing for EV adoption under its clean mobility mission. Without timely intervention, experts warn, production delays and higher costs could impact the sector’s growth trajectory.

Elon Musk plans to cut back political spending

Billionaire Elon Musk has said he expects to dial back his political donations, a major shift from the figure who shook up the 2024 election as a top donor to President Donald Trump. Musk, who ultimately spent more than $250m (£187m) in support of Trump's campaign, told an economic conference in Qatar that he planned to do "a lot less" spending in the future.

He also said he was committed to leading electric car company Tesla for another five years.

The comments come just a few weeks after he said he would step back from leading the controversial White House effort to slash federal spending, commonly called Doge.

Spain clamps down on Airbnb as tourism backlash returns for summer

The Spanish government has called for the removal of the listings of nearly 66,000 properties on rental platform Airbnb on the grounds that they breach regulations for tourist accommodation.

The clampdown comes as protests against over-tourism have begun ahead of the summer season. Demonstrations in the Canary Islands on Sunday attracted thousands of people.

The minister for social rights, consumer affairs and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduy, said the rental properties in question had "violated various norms regarding housing for tourist use".

Trump Reveals 'Golden Dome' Defense Plan

The US has selected a design for the futuristic "Golden Dome" missile defence system, says US President Donald Trump, adding that it will be operational by the end of his time in office. Just days after returning to the White House in January, Trump unveiled his intentions for the system, aimed at countering "next-generation" aerial threats to the US, including ballistic and cruise missiles. An initial sum of $25bn (£18.7bn) has been earmarked in a new budget bill - although the government has estimated it will end up costing much more than that over decades. Officials warn that existing systems have not kept pace with increasingly sophisticated weapons possessed by potential adversaries.

Rubio: Thousands of US Visas May Be Revoked

Washington:

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday the number of visas he has revoked was probably in the thousands, adding that he believed there was still more to do.

Republican President Donald Trump's administration has sought to ramp up deportations and revoke student visas as part of its wideranging efforts to fulfill his hardline immigration agenda.

"I don't know the latest count, but we probably have more to do," Rubio told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that oversees foreign affairs.

Asked to give an estimate, he said it was probably in the thousands at this point, an increase from March, when he said the State Department may have revoked more than 300 visas.

Rubio said the 300 revoked visas were a combination of student and visitor visas. He said he signed each action.

"A visa is not a right. It's a privilege," Rubio said on Tuesday.

Indian-Origin Entrepreneur Fatally Shot Without Provocation on Texas Public Bus

Washington: An Indian-origin entrepreneur, Akshay Gupta, 30, was fatally stabbed by another Indian man aboard a public bus in the Austin area of Texas on May 14, police said. According to the Austin Police Department (APD), Gupta was seated at the back of the bus when 31-year-old Deepak Kandel suddenly attacked him “without provocation,” stabbing him in the neck. Emergency services responded to a "Shoot/Stab" call that evening and found Gupta with severe injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m., as reported by local news outlet KXAN. CCTV footage from the bus helped police identify Kandel, who had exited the vehicle calmly along with other passengers after the stabbing. He was arrested less than a mile from the scene shortly afterward. According to an arrest affidavit, Kandel told officers he stabbed Gupta because he resembled his uncle. He has been charged with first-degree

murder and is being held in Travis County Jail. Reports indicate Kandel has previously faced and been released on several misdemeanor charges. Twelve passengers were reportedly on the bus during the attack.

Gupta was a rising entrepreneur in the health-tech industry. He co-founded

FootBit, a startup based in Austin focused on improving mobility and balance for senior citizens. In 2024, he also co-founded ASG Research LLC. His LinkedIn profile notes that he held a master’s degree from Penn State University and had previously met Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for his innovative work in the field. The shocking incident has sparked concern in the Indian-American community and raised questions about public safety and mental health.

Indian National Pleads Guilty In US Visa Fraud Conspiracy

Houston: Rambhai Patel, a 37-year-old Indian national residing in New York, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit visa fraud by staging armed robberies to help others fraudulently obtain U.S. immigration benefits. He entered his plea on Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Myong J. Joun in Boston. Sentencing is scheduled for August 20.

According to federal prosecutors, Patel and a co-conspirator orchestrated at least nine fake robberies at convenience stores and restaurants across several states, including

five in Massachusetts, starting in March 2023. The aim was to help individuals falsely qualify for U nonimmigrant visas, which are granted to victims of serious crimes who assist law enforcement. Surveillance footage showed staged scenes

with fake robbers brandishing weapons and stealing cash. Victims, who reportedly paid Patel up to $20,000, would delay reporting the crime to make it appear authentic. Patel also paid store owners for access to their premises.

At least two individuals submitted U visa applications based on these incidents. Patel was charged in December 2023, and his co-conspirator, Singh, is expected to plead guilty on May 22. Patel faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and possible deportation after serving his sentence. The FBI led the investigation.

Trump's Immigration Crackdown Impacts D.C. Restaurants

WASHINGTON — A surprise visit by armed immigration agents to Pupatella, a popular pizzeria in D.C.'s Dupont neighborhood, has rattled the local restaurant industry. Though no arrests were made, the visit—part of a broader Trump administration operation— sent a strong message. Agents requested I-9 employment forms but were turned away due to lack of a warrant. Later, ICE returned to another location with a formal “notice of inspection.”

Between May 6 and 9, ICE issued 187 such notices and arrested 189 undocumented migrants in the Washington area, calling it a targeted operation against “criminal alien offenders.”

Pupatella’s VP, Natasha Neely, called the visit intimidating and unprecedented. “We’ve never experienced anything like this,” she said. The raids have sparked concern among restaurant owners. “Undocumented migrants are the backbone of our industry,” said Shawn Townsend, head of the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington. Some businesses report that employees with uncertain work status have stopped coming to work.

CJI Gavai: Courts Need Strong Case to Intervene in Waqf Act

The bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih is hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the Waqf Amendment Act

The bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih heard petitions challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which was enacted into law last month. Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Tuesday said that laws passed by Parliament are assumed to be constitutional, and courts cannot step in

unless there is a clear and serious problem. He made this comment while hearing petitions against the Waqf Amendment Act. The bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih was hearing a group of petitions challenging the Waqf Amendment Act, which was passed into law last month.

The apex court had earlier identified three key issues, which include Waqf by user, the nomination of non-Muslims to the Waqf Council and state Waqf Boards, and the identification of government land as Waqf property. The Centre had assured it would not proceed on these matters until the case was settled.

During Tuesday’s hearing, solicitor general Tushar Mehta said that the Centre had submitted its response on the three identified issues. “The written submissions of the petitioners now extend to several other issues. My request is to confine it to the three issues only,” he said.

He has also demanded that Islamabad hand over key terrorists Hafiz Saeed, Sajid Mir and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, just like US handed over 26/11 mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana. 14,000 Babies In Gaza Could Die In Next 48 Hours, Warns UN

London: The United Nations has warned that as many as 14,000 babies could die in Gaza within 48 hours if more aid does not enter the war-torn enclave. Israeli authorities are only allowing limited aid to enter the Palestinian territory after 11 weeks of completely blockading Gaza. The move came after pressure from allies including the US, Canada, France and the United Kingdom.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said only five trucks carrying humanitarian aid, including food for babies, entered Gaza on Monday-- a "drop in the ocean" after weeks of complete blockade by Israel. He said the aid was yet to reach the communities in need. "There are 14,000 babies that will die in the next 48 hours unless we can reach them...We run all sorts of risks trying to get that baby food through to those mothers who cannot feed their children right now because they're malnourished," he said, speaking to BBC's Radio 4.

"India's operation was against terror groups and their infrastructure to which Pakistan responded by attacking India's military installations", he emphasised. Asked if the ceasefire is holding and if it is the 'end of the matter' for India, Mr Singh responded by saying that "the ceasefire is still holding on but we have made it very clear that Operation Sindoor is paused, it's not yet over".

Did Trump Threaten to Cut Ties with Israel Over Gaza

Tel Aviv:

As Israel intensified its offensive in Gaza to take "total control" of the Palestinian territory, some of its closest allies, including the United States, might be threatening to withdraw their support from Jerusalem in the face of mass starvation in the enclave.

The Trump administration has warned the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu government that Israel's failure to conclude the war in Gaza would lead to a withdrawal of American backing, according to a report by The Washington Post. Quoting an anonymous source familiar with the discussions, the newspaper reported that Trump's representatives have informed Israel that the US will "abandon" the country if it does not end the war.

Pakistan Targeted Golden Temple, All Threats Neutralized: Indian Army

Pakistan tried to target the Golden Temple in Amritsar and several cities in Punjab with drones and missiles on the intervening night of May 7-8 in retaliation against India’s strikes on nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistanoccupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army said Monday. During a media briefing and live demonstration held in Amritsar, the Indian Army displayed debris of drones and missiles launched from Pakistan and intercepted by Indian air defence systems. The Army also showed how advanced systems, including the upgraded L-70 Air Defence Guns and AKASH missile systems, were used to neutralise aerial threats aimed at critical sites, including the Golden Temple and cities across Punjab.

Major General Kartik C Seshadri, General Officer Commanding, 15 Infantry Division, said the Golden Temple was directly targeted in the recent wave of attacks. “Knowing that the Pakistani army does not have any legitimate targets, we anticipated that they would target Indian military installations and civilian targets, including religious places. Of these, the Golden Temple appeared to be the most prominent. We mobilised additional modern air defence assets to give a holistic air defence umbrella cover

Trump’s New Bill May Make Sending Money to India Costlier for NRIs

Washington, D.C.:

A new bill proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump is raising concerns among Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), as it could significantly increase the cost of sending money from the United States to India. If passed, the legislation could lead to billions in losses for the Indian diaspora and impact the flow of remittances—a critical financial link for many families and communities in India.

The bill, reportedly aimed at tightening immigration control and foreign remittances, proposes a remittance tax or surcharge on international money transfers, especially to countries like India, Mexico, and others with large expatriate populations in the U.S. Trump and his allies argue that such a measure would discourage illegal immigration and ensure that funds sent abroad are properly taxed.

However, the proposal has sparked outrage among the Indian-American community. Experts say it would

“This move could severely disrupt remittance flows and create financial hardship for families dependent on money from abroad,” said financial analyst Meera Kapoor. “It’s not just about taxation— it’s about penalizing a lifeline for millions.”

Community leaders and advocacy groups are urging the U.S. Congress to oppose the bill, warning that it may damage economic ties with India and alienate a key voting bloc. Some also fear it may set a precedent for other countries to implement similar policies. As the bill moves through the legislative process, NRIs and financial institutions alike are bracing for potential changes that could redefine cross-border financial transactions between the U.S. and India.

Trump Secures $200B UAE Deals, Burj Khalifa Lights Up in US Flag

Abu Dhabi (IANS): US President Donald Trump announced over $200 billion in commercial agreements with the United Arab Emirates during his visit to Abu Dhabi, significantly boosting US-UAE economic ties across aviation, energy, aluminum, nuclear power, and artificial intelligence.

Trump was welcomed by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Thursday. Etihad Airways signed a $14.5 billion deal to buy 28 Boeing aircraft with GE engines, supporting 60,000 US jobs. Emirates Global Aluminium will

invest $4 billion to build the first US aluminum smelter in 45 years, creating 1,000 jobs in Oklahoma.

ADNOC partnered with ExxonMobil, Occidental Petroleum, and EOG Resources on $60 billion in oil and gas projects. In nuclear energy, Holtec International and UAE's IHC will invest $10 billion in small modular reactor projects in Michigan, with an added $20 billion for future expansion.

A key highlight was the US-UAE AI pact, supporting a $1.4 trillion UAE investment strategy in AI, semiconductors, quantum computing, and US data centers. The UAE also agreed to align national security regulations with the US to prevent technology misuse.

To honor Trump’s visit, the Burj Khalifa was illuminated in US flag colors, and Dubai streets were decorated with US and UAE flags, symbolizing deepening bilateral ties.

India willing to remove 100 pc tariffs on US goods: Donald Trump

Washington (IANS): US President Donald Trump has claimed that India is ready to eliminate all tariffs on American goods, calling it a significant development in ongoing trade talks. Speaking to Fox News on Friday, Trump said, “They make it almost impossible to do business. Do you know they're willing to cut 100 percent of their tariffs for the United States?” Despite

the announcement, Trump said he was not in a hurry to finalize the deal. “That’ll come soon. I’m in no rush. Look, everybody wants to make a deal with us,” he stated, adding that he does not intend to strike deals with every country. Responding to Trump’s remarks, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that negotiations remain complex and no final agreement has been reached.

“These are complicated negotiations. Nothing is decided till everything is. Any trade deal must be mutually beneficial,” Jaishankar told reporters on Thursday.

Trump’s comments come amid wider US efforts to reshape global trade dynamics. He hinted at announcing new import duty rates within two to three weeks and mentioned possible trade expansion with Pakistan, positioning trade as a tool for geopolitical leverage.

Regarding China, Trump said recent trade talks led to tariff reductions on both sides, framing the move as a stabilizing gesture. “If I didn’t do that deal with China, I think China would have broken apart,” he claimed. The India-US trade deal, however, remains under negotiation with no clear timeline for resolution.

Earlier on Friday, Trump said he is planning to set new import duty rates for trading partners

over the "over next two to three weeks". Trump said he also dangled the prospect of expanded trade with India's rival Pakistan.

Meet the newest podcaster in B-Town — none other than Karan Johar. The filmmaker is all set to host his podcast series, titled Live Your Best Life, launching on Audible India on May 24, 2025. And guess who his first guest is? It is Aamir Khan's daughter Ira Khan, the founder of the mental health foundation, Agatsu. On Friday, Ira Khan shared a poster of the podcast on Instagram. In the caption, she revealed that she shared some “awkward truths” with KJo during the candid conversation. Ira Khan wrote, “Does your family too feel completely different from all the ones around you? Same here. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has once again sparked a debate with his unapologetically blunt take on the state of Indian cinema. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Varma compared Indian filmmakers to Hollywood’s approach, specifically praising Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which marks the last chapter in the globally popular spy franchise led by Tom Cruise. In his post, Varma wrote,

“The difference between them and us is they assume the audience to be intelligent and push their intelligence further up, by making films like #MissionImpossibleTheFinalReckoning. On the contrary, we assume the audience to be dumb and we push their dumbness further down in the hope of even reaching the dumbest of the audience by making films like

While he left the last bit open-ended, many followers shared their disappointment over the filmmaker’s attitude—especially given his own track record in recent years. Social media users were quick to “fill in the blank” with titles from Varma’s own filmography, including Agyaat, Aag, D Company, Department, and even Sarkar 3, all of which failed to strike a chord with audiences or critics. Some also took issue with Varma’s tendency to praise Hollywood while mocking Indian cinema. “We Indians have habit of downgrading our things and hyping average stuff coming from International market....” read one of the comments.

Known for speaking out against the film industry on multiple occasions, Varma has never shied away from shocking statements including his recent comments on over-the-top commercial entertainers and the increasing trend of relying on CGI-heavy action without strong screenwriting or character arcs. His latest statement, however, directly pits Indian filmmakers against Hollywood’s legacy franchises, particularly praising Mission Impossible. Whether Varma’s comments lead to serious introspection or just more online noise, that remains to be seen!

Meanwhile, speaking of Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, it is expected to be Tom Cruise’s swan song in the role of IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film is the concluding part of the two-part finale, following Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). The new instalment also starring Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, and Ving Rhames, released on May 17 in India.

His heroic actions, despite being outnumbered, are chronicled in the acclaimed book ‘India’s Most Fearless 3’ by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh.

Akshay Sues Paresh Rawal for Rs. 25 Cr: Report

Akshay Kumar has decided to sue co-star Paresh Rawal for Rs 25 crore as damages after he exited Hera Pheri 3, allegedly sabotaging the shoot, as per a Hindustan Times report.

Akshay Kumar's move comes two days after Paresh Rawal confirmed his exit from the film through an X post.

On May 18, Paresh Rawal clarified that he didn't leave the film due to creative differences or money issues. He put his record straight, saying, "I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences.

"Even Akshay Is Clueless" : Suniel Shetty

I REITERATE THAT THERE ARE NO CREATIVE DISAGREEMENT WITH THE FILM MAKER . I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan the film director." Reports suggest, Paresh Rawal was paid three times more than his usual remuneration for this film.

Akshay, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal had begun shooting for the film under veteran director Priyadarshan in April this year. Akshay is also the producer of Hera Pheri 3, after legally buying the rights for it from producer Feroz Nadiadwala.

Earlier, Paresh Rawal himself announced that he would be a part of

Suniel Shetty, who played the character of Shyam in the 2000 hit film Hera Pheri, came to know about Paresh Rawal's exit from his children, Athiya and Ahaan. Suniel, who was in Delhi to promote his latest film Kesari Veer, told India Today, "I have no clue about this. This is absolutely shocking. I first thought about texting him, and then I thought I'd meet him and would discuss it. I have had no word about it with anybody as to what happened."

the film by sharing a post on his X.

"Paresh himself announced doing the film on his X handle in January, he participated in all pre production planning, shot for a day (including the teaser promo) willingly. When he never expressed dissatisfaction at any point, for him to now suddenly play with the emotions of the fans of this franchise and inflict losses on the producer is clearly in bad faith," stated a source as quoted by Hindustan Times.

"Paresh displayed a blatant disregard for professional integrity or commercial morality. If he wanted to not do the film, he should have said so before signing the legal contract, accepting the signing amount and making the producer spend so much money on the shoot," said a source familiar with the legal proceedings in the matter. "It is high time Bollywood actors realise that like Hollywood, producers here too will no longer give in to the whims of an actor walking in and out of a film as he pleases," adds the source.

Priyanka Chopra Joins Elba, Cena in Heads of Stat

Global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas continues to solidify her status as one of the few Indian actors to successfully cross over into mainstream Hollywood with her latest film, Heads of State. The high-octane action-comedy, co-starring Idris Elba and John Cena, will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on July 2. The first trailer, released this week, teases explosive action, slick stunts, and a throwback to ‘90s buddy comedies. Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Nobody), the film centers on the tense relationship between UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Elba) and U.S. President Will Derringer (Cena). Their rivalry escalates when a foreign adversary targets them, forcing the pair into an uneasy alliance. Chopra Jonas plays Noel Bisset, a sharp MI6 operative who holds the chaotic mission together. Her portrayal adds another powerful performance to her growing Hollywood résumé. Since her breakout in ABC’s Quantico, Chopra Jonas has starred in films like Baywatch, The White Tiger (also as executive producer), and Love Again. With Heads of State, she continues to prove her versatility and staying power in an industry where few South Asian actors have made such a mark. Balancing global appeal and diverse roles, Chopra Jonas remains a trailblazer, and Heads of State is set to be another exciting chapter in her international career. The film will stream on Prime Video starting July 2.

Javed Akhtar

On Being Labelled

"Kaafir, Jihadi"

"People From Both Sides Abuse Me"

Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar, known for his outspoken views, made a bold statement at a recent event in Mumbai. While attending the launch of Narkatla Swarg, a book by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, Akhtar addressed the ideological backlash he regularly faces from both ends of the political spectrum.

"People from both sides abuse me," he said. "One calls me a Kaafir and says I’ll go to hell; the other calls me a Jihadi and tells me to go to Pakistan." Displaying his trademark wit, Akhtar quipped, "If my only options are hell or Pakistan, I’d rather go to hell."

Akhtar emphasized that criticism is not one-sided and acknowledged the support he also receives. “I would be ungrateful if I didn’t admit that many people appreciate and encourage me,” he said. However, he noted that attacks from extremists have become a constant in his

life. “If either side stops abusing me, I’ll think I’ve done something wrong,” he added.

His remarks come amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan with missile strikes. Despite a ceasefire announced on May 10, reports indicate multiple violations by Pakistan, leading to further retaliatory action by Indian forces.

The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both countries are expected to meet for talks soon, as efforts continue to stabilize the region. Akhtar's statement reflects not only his personal resilience but also the broader atmosphere of polarization gripping the subcontinent.

Two Dead, Several Injured as Mexican Navy Tall Ship Hits Brooklyn Bridge

NEW YORK, NY — Two crew members were killed and at least 22 people were injured after the Mexican Navy’s tall sailing ship Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, officials said.

During a late-night press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that all injuries occurred on board the ship. Nineteen of the injured required medical treatment, with two in critical condition. The injured were transported to Bellevue Hospital.

"Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge," Adams stated in a social media post. "Of the 277 people aboard, 19 sustained injuries, two critically, and tragically, two crew members have died."

According to the Mexican government, the vessel's main mast stands at 160 feet tall. Social media videos captured the dramatic moment when the ship’s masts collapsed upon impact, shocking onlookers as the vessel drifted beneath the bridge.

Following a preliminary inspection, Mayor Adams confirmed that the bridge

sustained no structural dam-age and has since reopened to the public.

Cuauhtémoc, a sail training vessel of the Mexican Navy, had arrived in New York earlier in the week and was docked at Pier 17, where it had been offering free public tours until Saturday evening.

"We are praying for everyone on board and their families," Adams said, expressing gratitude to first re-sponders for their swift action.

White House Pivots to Immigration After GOP Revolt Stalls Spending Bill

WASHNGTON, DC- With President Donald Trump’s legislative package facing opposition, the White House has shifted its messaging to emphasize immigration enforcement—an issue that continues to unify the GOP.

Trump suffered a setback on May 16 when five Republicans joined Democrats on the House Budget Com-mittee to vote against his sweeping bill, dubbed the “one big, beautiful bill.” The legislation combines tax cuts, immigration enforcement provisions, and other GOP priorities. Critics, including some Republicans, opposed the bill due to its projected addition of trillions to the national debt over the next decade.

To regain momentum, the White House pivoted toward promoting the bill’s immigration enforcement measures. In a May 17 press release, officials highlighted funding increases for deportation efforts, stat-ing, “The Big Beautiful Bill will empower Big Beautiful Deportations.”

Trump’s aggressive deportation strategies have stirred controversy, particularly his use of an obscure war-time law to expedite removals—sparking legal challenges and public scrutiny, including the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident mistakenly deported to El Salvador. Amid stalled negotiations, Representative Nick LaLota (RNY) proposed raising revenue by allowing tax cuts for high earners to expire, suggesting it could add $300 billion and realign GOP messaging with work-ing-class priorities. “The bill has stalled—it needs wind in its sails,” he said on May 17. Trump responded by urging party unity and swift action, writing, “We don’t need ‘GRANDSTANDERS’ in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!”

GOP lawmakers indicated ongoing talks with House Speaker Mike Johnson to revise the bill.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Mexican Navy acknowledged the incident and stated that authorities are assessing the condition of the crew and equipment. "The Navy reaffirms its commitment to safety, op-erational transparency, and the training of its future officers," the statement read.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences, mourning the loss of the two crew members.

Green Card Through Marriage Now Tougher

USCIS Quietly Changes Marriage Green Card Rules

WASHINGTON, DC- As of mid-2025, U.S. immigration agencies have quietly introduced several im-portant updates that impact the marriage-based green card process. While no major policy shift has been officially announced, recent changes to forms, filing protocols, and agency guidance point to stricter pro-cedures and an increased emphasis on fraud prevention.

Key Form Updates

• If you're applying for a marriage-based green card this year, be aware of the following form changes:

• Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status): Only the 01/20/25 edition will be accepted starting April 3, 2025.

• Form I-129F (Fiancé Visa): Only the 01/20/25 edition will be accepted starting May 1, 2025.

Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative): The 04/01/24 edition remains valid but now includes detailed fraud warnings and notes on consular processing.

To avoid rejection, ensure that all pages of each submitted form are from the same edition date.

In addition to marriage-based petitions, USCIS has updated a wide range of immigration forms—including those for naturalization, humanitarian relief, work permits, and travel documents—most of which now use the 01/20/25 edition.

U.S. Warns Indians: Visa Overstay Risks Ban

The implications are substantial for Indian nationals, who form one of the largest groups of international students and skilled professionals in the U.S. Nearly 270,000 Indian students were enrolled in American institutions during the 2022–2023 academic year.

WASHINGTON, DC- The United States has issued a serious warning to Indian nationals, emphasizing that overstaying a visa could lead to deportation and a permanent ban from future travel to the country. The alert, shared by the U.S. Embassy in India on May 17 via social media platform X, urges all travellers to strictly follow their visa terms.

“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised period of stay, you could be deported and face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future,” the embassy stated.

The warning is part of ongoing efforts to tighten immigration enforcement. Although former President Donald Trump is no longer in office, many of his immigration policies remain in effect and continue to in-fluence current practices.

Earlier on April 30, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) also reminded the public that visas and green cards are privileges, not rights. The agency warned that supporting or promoting vio-lence or terrorist activities could result in immediate ineligibility to remain in the country. In line with tougher regulations, a new memo now allows U.S. immigration authorities to revoke visas without prior notice or appeal. This applies to students and other non-citizen visa holders and includes grounds such as loss of legal status, failure to maintain enrollment, and employment violations.

These measures mark a significant shift from earlier practices that typically allowed legal defense and ap-peals. The implications are substantial for Indian nationals, who form one of the largest groups of international students and skilled professionals in the U.S. Nearly 270,000 Indian students were enrolled in American institutions during the 2022–2023 academic year.

The U.S. Embassy advises all travelers to consult official immigration resources or legal professionals be-fore planning any travel or relocation to ensure full compliance with the law.

FBI Identifies Anti-Natalist Motive in California Fertility Clinic Attack

PALM SPRINGS, CA-The fatal car bombing outside a Palm Springs fertility clinic, which killed one person and injured four others, appears to have been motivated by anti-natalist ideology, according to senior law en-forcement officials. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus of Twentynine Palms, died in the Saturday morning blast, which authorities now classify as an act of terrorism.

Investigators are reviewing Bartkus’ social media posts, including a 30-minute audio message and potential online manifestos promoting anti-natalist views—the belief that people should not reproduce. They are also analyzing a YouTube account featuring videos of homemade explosives and an online forum post linked to suicidal ideation involving explosives.

Authorities believe Bartkus attempted to livestream the attack. At a Sunday press conference, officials confirmed they are executing a search warrant at his

Twentynine Palms residence and interviewing acquaintances to piece together a timeline.

The explosion occurred around 11 a.m. at 1199 North Indian Canyon Drive, damaging buildings within a 250-yard radius. The American Reproductive Centers (ARC) clinic confirmed the vehicle detonated in their parking lot. Although four individuals were injured, all have since been released from the hospital. Witnesses reported hearing the blast from miles away. Forensic teams continue to process the scene and review video footage. The FBI and Palm Springs Police are asking the public for information on Bartkus and his silver 2010 Ford Fusion.

FBI Assistant Director Akil Davis called it one of Southern California's largest bombing investigations. De-spite the scale, Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills emphasized, “There is no continuing threat.”

calling her service in Oak Brook “weird karma.” Nagle was brief but resolute: “Let’s get to work.” Reddy, beginning his second term, spoke of unity and purpose, thanking his family and pledging transparency.

Trustee Ef Tiesenga closed with a philosophical note on democracy, echoing Oak Brook’s founding vision.

The evening blended solemnity and warmth— sandalwood rituals, petal blessings, light-hearted remarks, and heartfelt applause. A reception followed, full of celebration and promise.

LA Mosque Vandalism Probed as Hate Crime

LOS ANGELES, CA- Authorities are investigating a recent act of vandalism at the Islamic Center of Southern California in Koreatown as a hate crime. On Saturday, May 10, surveillance footage captured a man spray-painting graffiti—including the word “God,” the Star of David, and names of Japanese compa-nies—on the mosque’s walls, trees, and fence.

Mosque spokesperson Omar Ricci said the messaging appeared to reference the war in Gaza and was interpreted as a threat to the Muslim community. “It conveys, ‘We’re coming for you,’” Ricci stated. While LAPD continues to assess the full meaning of the messages, Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed the in-cident is being treated as a potential hate crime. The mosque experienced similar vandalism in April 2023 involving anti-Muslim messages; no arrests were made in that case. Faith leaders from across Los Angeles gathered at the mosque on May 16 to denounce the act and show interfaith solidarity. “Hate against one group spills into another,” said UCLA Jewish History professor David Myers. Muslim Public Affairs Council President Salam Al-Marayati added, “They want to divide us, but they will not succeed.” According to a 2023 LA County report, hate crimes have surged nearly 50% year-over-year, with reli-gion-based attacks among the most common. The District Attorney’s office stated that hate crime charges will be considered once the suspect is identified and the investigation concludes.

DoorDash Scam

SAN JOSE, CA — A Newport Beach resident has pleaded guilty to defrauding DoorDash of more than $2.5 million through a sophisticated delivery scam that exploited the company’s internal systems.

Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri, 30, entered his guilty plea on May 13 in federal court.

According to court documents, between 2020 and 2021, Devagiri conspired with others to create fake de-liveries while working as a DoorDash driver. Using stolen employee credentials, he accessed the company’s internal software and rerouted legitimate orders to fraudulent driver accounts under his and his coconspirators’ control.

After falsely marking the orders as delivered, Devagiri triggered payments to the fake accounts, then reset the status to “in process” to repeat the scheme—executing the fraud hundreds of times, often within minutes.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A status hearing is scheduled for September 16, 2025. Sentencing will follow federal guidelines. Devagiri is the third person convicted in connection with the scheme. Manaswi Mandadapu pleaded guilty earlier this month, while Tyler Thomas Bottenhorn was convicted in November 2023.

Indian-Origin Tech Leader Among 3 Killed in North Cascades Climbing Tragedy

BELLEVUE, WA – Vishnu Irigireddy, a highly regarded engineering executive from Renton, was one of three climbers who tragically died on May 10 following a fall in Washington’s North Cascades. The group was rappelling down a steep rock face in Okanogan County when their anchor reportedly failed, causing them to fall nearly 400 feet.

Irigireddy, 48, was climbing with Alex Martynenko, 36, of Bellevue, and Tim Nguyen, 63, also of Renton. All three lost their lives in the accident. A fourth member of the group, Anton Tselykh, 38, of Seattle, survived. After the fall, Tselykh undertook a grueling overnight trek through snow-covered, rugged terrain to reach his vehicle and call for help from the nearest pay phone. Emergency crews later arrived by helicopter and recovered the bodies of the deceased climbers.

Investigators believe a catastrophic anchor failure during the descent led to the tragedy, though the incident remains under review.

Defense Reviews 20,000 Guard Troops for Immigration Crackdown

WASHINGTON, DC- The Defense Department is reviewing a request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to deploy more than 20,000 National Guard troops in support of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

If approved, it would mark the first time National Guard troops have been used to assist with an interior immigration enforcement operation within the United States.

The request follows President Trump’s directive to DHS to bolster its ranks by drawing 20,000 officers from federal or state agencies. Pentagon lawyers are currently evaluating the proposal, particularly its implica-tions for the Guard’s role in “interior immigration enforcement,” said a Defense Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The scope of the Guard’s duties—whether they would include direct involvement in arrests or deportations—remains unclear. It is also uncertain whether individual states would need to approve their Guard units’ participation.

Historically, National Guard troops have provided support at the border—offering

logistics, surveillance, and security— but have not taken part in interior immigration enforcement. This potential deployment would mark a significant expansion of their role.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the request, emphasizing that the agency would “use eve-ry tool and resource available” to carry out the president’s directive to arrest and deport “criminal illegal aliens.”

“The safety of American citizens comes first,” McLaughlin said.

This move is part of a broader effort to ramp up deportations and meet President Trump’s pledge of “mass deportations,” a promise that has not yet been realized. Immigration enforcement requires significant manpower and surveillance resources.

To assist, the administration has already enlisted personnel from other federal agencies. This week, offi-cials moved to bring in approximately 2,000 agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to support arrest operations. In the early months of the administration, agents from ATF and DEA primarily provided backup to Immigra-tion and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during arrests and raids.

of Engineering at Fluke Corporation, where he was widely admired as an “extraordinary leader” whose influence was felt across the organization. He was respected not only for his technical

acumen but also for his warmth, collaborative spirit, and commitment to mentoring others.

Outside of work, Irigireddy was known for his adventurous soul and deep love of the outdoors. An avid mountaineer, he regularly sought out remote trails and challenging peaks throughout the Pacific Northwest. Friends and family remember him as someone who combined ambition with compassion—a person who made others feel seen, heard, and valued.

News of his passing has sent shockwaves through the region’s climbing and tech communities. Those who knew him speak of his infectious energy, unwavering loyalty, and the many ways he quietly supported and uplifted those around him—whether on the trail, in the boardroom, or in everyday life.

DALLAS, TX – Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, has been released from a Texas immigration detention center following a federal judge’s order. The ruling allows the Indian national to return to his home in Virginia while his legal team continues to contest his detention in court.

Judge Patricia Giles of the Eastern District of Virginia ruled that the federal government failed to present sufficient evidence justifying Suri’s detention or proving he posed any threat to U.S. interests, according to NPR.

Speaking to NBC News after his release, Suri described the ordeal as dehumanizing: “There was no charge, there was nothing. They made a subhuman out of me.”

The Department of Homeland Security alleged Suri was detained for “actively spreading Hamas propagan-da and promoting antisemitism on social media,” and for his alleged ties to a “known or suspected terror-ist,” reportedly a senior advisor to Hamas. Suri’s legal team has strongly denied these allegations, characterizing the

Suri was arrested on March 17 by masked federal agents at his Virginia home. He was informed that his visa had been revoked and was subsequently held for two months in Texas without any formal charges.

In addition to challenging his detention, Suri also faces a deportation attempt by the Trump administration, with a hearing scheduled for June 3 in Texas. Details of Suri’s confinement reveal disturbing conditions. According to the ACLU, he was moved through five ICE facilities across three states in four days before reaching the Texas center, where he spent nearly two weeks in a room without a bed, exposed to continuous television noise. During Ramadan, he was al-legedly denied food and water to break his fast and issued used undergarments along with a red uniform typically reserved for highsecurity detainees.

Appreciation also to the media for coverage and promotion, especially Mahadev Desai for event coverage and Srikanth Kari for photography.

The Hindu Temple of Atlanta remains committed to promoting health, service, and spiritual well-being through ongoing health fairs and outreach programs— helping to build a healthier, happier, and spiritually enriched community.

Trump Administration Suspends Asylum for Migrants

WASHINGTON, DC- Since President Donald Trump’s return to office on January 20, the U.S. asylum system has effectively been suspended, leaving thousands of migrants in limbo. Asylumseekers from countries like Eritrea, Pakistan, Russia, and Guatemala, who once had the right to present their cases, are now being turned away or swiftly deported without proper interviews. A Russian man fleeing political persecution described being deported to Costa Rica without ever speaking to an immigration officer. The suspension followed Trump’s executive orders aimed at halting what he termed an “invasion.” Legal experts

Asylum-seekers from countries like Eritrea, Pakistan, Russia, and Guatemala are now being turned away or swiftly deported without proper interviews

and advocacy groups argue this move violates both U.S. and international

law. The American Civil Liberties Union has led a court challenge, calling the policy “as unlawful as it is unprecedented.” Mean-while, the administration insists its actions are not subject to judicial review.

Attorneys working along the border report a sharp drop in asylum-related inquiries. The system to schedule interviews has been dismantled, leaving legal pathways uncertain. Instead, many migrants are rerouted to countries like Costa Rica and Panama, where they await deportation. While illegal crossings have decreased, confusion reigns over who can still claim asylum, as lawyers scram-ble to interpret an ever-shifting and opaque enforcement landscape.

Kash Patel Announces FBI to Relocate 1,500 Employees from D.C. Headquarters

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI will vacate its longtime Washington, D.C. headquarters, relocating 1,500 employees due to unsafe conditions at the J. Edgar Hoover Building, Director Kash Patel announced in an interview aired Friday.

“This FBI is leaving the Hoover Building because this building is unsafe for our workforce,” Patel stated. “If you’re going to come work at the premier law enforcement agency in the world, we’re going to give you a building that reflects that — and this isn’t it.”

Patel said he has informed senior officials of the relocation plan, which includes moving some employees to Huntsville, Alabama. Finding a new home for the agency has been under discussion for over 15 years.

In November 2023, under President Biden’s administration, Greenbelt, Maryland, was selected as the future site of a new FBI headquarters.

President Donald Trump, however, stated in March that the agency would remain in D.C. That same month, the Hoover Building appeared on a federal list of properties considered

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasized the importance of keeping the FBI close to the Department of Jus-tice. “Having the FBI headquarters in our nation’s capital keeps America safer,” she said. “The District and our region are ready to support both temporary leases and a permanent home in secure, modern facili-ties.”

Dr. Kiran Joshi Named COO of Cook County Public Health

FOREST PARK, IL - Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has named Dr. Kiran Joshi as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). In this role, Dr. Joshi will serve as the executive leader of the state-certified public health department, which supports the health and well-being of approximately 2.3 million residents across suburban Cook County.

“Dr. Joshi provided steady guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic and has established himself as a public health champion for Cook County,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “I am confident in his ability to advance our efforts to dismantle systemic barriers to health and to support the well-being of communities throughout suburban Cook County.”

Dr. Joshi has been serving as interim COO since January. Over his more than 10-year tenure at CCDPH, he has led numerous programs and initiatives, including founding the department’s Community Behavioral Health and Community Immunization units. From 2020 to 2022, he co-led CCDPH’s and Cook County’s re-sponse to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dr. Joshi has dedicated his career to public health,” said Dr. Erik Mikaitis, CEO of Cook County Health. “I am grateful for his leadership at this critical time as we face emerging diseases, work to improve health outcomes, and ensure access to care for all Cook County residents.” In 2021, Dr. Joshi was recognized by the Institute of Medicine of Chicago for his public health leadership during the pandemic. He also serves as an attending physician with the Cook County Health Department of Family Medicine, providing care at the North Riverside Community Health Center.

“I am deeply honored and grateful to be selected to lead the Cook County Department of Public Health,” said Dr. Joshi. “This opportunity is both a privilege and a responsibility. I am committed to working collab-oratively to advance health equity, strengthen our communities, and ensure every resident has access to the care and support they need to thrive.” Dr. Joshi is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Prior to joining Cook County Health, he served as a faculty attending physician at the Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program and worked as a consultant to the World Health Organization, providing technical assistance in training health workers across sub-Saharan Africa.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and completed residencies in pre-ventive medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and family medicine at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

authorized for 38,000 employees, about 11,000 — nearly a third — are based within 50 miles of D.C. “But a third of the crime doesn’t happen here,” he said. “So we’re moving 1,500 of those folks out.”

He added that the redistribution will support local communities and inspire future law enforcement professionals. “Every state’s getting a plus-up,” Patel said. “We want Americans to see the FBI where the crime is happening and know we’re there to help.”

The moves are expected to unfold over the next three to nine months.

Virginia Senator Mark Warner expressed concern, warning that “the FBI needs stability and support — not a half-baked effort that disrupts collaboration with the Intelligence Community.”

Maryland Representative Glenn Ivey supported decentralizing some operations, saying, “Working alongside local law enforcement can have a multiplier effect in reducing crime.” Still, he advocated for expedit-ing the construction of the new Greenbelt headquarters. “Let’s fast-track the move. It’s in the best interest of the FBI and the nation,” he said.

Cook County, SSC Break Ground on Waste Facility

CHICAGO, IL- Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle joined South Suburban College (SSC) officials to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new $4.6 million Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility. A collaboration between the Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability (DES) and SSC, the fa-cility will provide County residents with a permanent location to safely dispose of household hazardous waste. Located at 15800 State St., South Holland, IL, the HHW facility is expected to open this fall. It will operate alongside SSC’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM Center), which opened on Earth Day 2023. Since then, CHaRM has served over 3,300 residents and collected nearly 2.5 million pounds of hard-to-recycle items.

The HHW facility will accept items such as household chemicals, oil-based paints, solvents, medications, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, antifreeze, herbicides, insecticides, aerosol cans, and various lawn and pool chemicals.

“This facility will help make our communities safer and more sustainable by reducing environmental and health risks,” said President Preckwinkle.

“It fills a critical service gap in the Southland, where residents previously had to travel long distances to dispose of hazardous materials.”

Dr. Lynette Stokes, SSC President, added, “This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability, public service, and community health.”

Both the HHW facility and CHaRM Center are funded through the County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation, part of over $100 million committed to environmental sustainability and climate action.

Reality Show Concept Floated: U.S. Citizenship as Grand Prize

WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reportedly reviewing a pitch for a reality TV game show in which immigrants would compete for U.S. citizenship through challenges inspired by American traditions. Department spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin described the proposal as a potential “celebration of being an American,” though it has not been approved or rejected.

The idea comes amid a broader immigration crackdown under Donald Trump, whose policies have im-pacted undocumented immigrants, lawful residents, and even U.S.-citizen children. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, criticized for her theatrical approach, recently posed in tactical gear during immi-gration operations and visited a notorious El Salvador prison. The show concept was pitched by Rob

Worsoff, a Canadian-born producer known for Duck Dynasty. He drew inspiration from his own naturalization process. His proposal, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, includes one-hour episodes beginning with a reenactment of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, followed by challenges like a gold rush

race in San Francisco and an auto assembly competition in Detroit. The final winner would be sworn in as a U.S. citizen.

Worsoff emphasized it’s not a punitive format: “This isn’t The Hunger Games for immigrants.” DHS says such pitches are vetted thoroughly and denied that Noem had knowledge of the show.

Youth Joblessness Tops 80% in Parts of Chicago, Report Shows

A new report from the University of Illinois Chicago’s Great Cities Institute, commissioned by the Alternative Schools Network, reveals extremely high youth joblessness in Chicago— especially among Black and Latino teens—with rates exceeding 80% in some South and West Side neighborhoods. Despite post-pandemic labor market recovery, many 16- to 24-year-olds remain disconnected from school and work. The report highlights major racial disparities: nearly 48% of Black 20- to 24-year-olds are jobless compared to 19.5% of white peers, and 14.3% of Black teens aged 16 to 19 are both out of school and unemployed—over four times the rate for white teens. In response, nonprofits are calling for a $150 million state-funded job program to employ 50,000 youth at $15 per hour, offering summer and year-round work. Research shows such programs reduce crime, improve academics, and build long-term stability. “We can’t continue to leave our young people behind,” said Sen. Willie Preston.
