US Intelligence Chief presenting the intelligence community's 2026 Annual Threat Assessment, said that Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and Pakistan are the most significant nuclear threats to the United States.

While testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, Gabbard said, "The intelligence community assesses that Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan have been researching and developing an array of novel, advanced, or traditional missile delivery systems, with nuclear and conventional payloads, that put our homeland within range." Gabbard said that China and Russia are developing advanced delivery systems that are capable of penetrating or bypassing US missile defences.

"North Korea's ICBMs can already reach US soil, and it is committed to expanding its nuclear arsenal," she added.

The intel chief highlighted that North Korea is deepening its ties with Russia and China, a shifting alignment she suggested carries serious implications for global security.

Speaking about Pakistan, she told lawmakers that the Islamic republic's long-range ballistic missile development potentially could include ICBMs with the range capable of striking the United States. Gabbard identified Al-Qaeda and ISIS as significant and enduring threats to US interests abroad, with

both groups maintaining a dangerous presence across parts of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. She claimed that the expected number of missiles capable of striking the United States has increased sharply from 3,000 in 2025 to 16,000 in 2035.

On the situation in Iran, Gabbard contradicted US President Donald Trump and said that Iran made no effort to rebuild uranium enrichment after its capabilities were destroyed in a June 2025 US-Israeli attack. "As a result of Operation Midnight Hammer, Iran's nuclear enrichment programme was obliterated. There has been no efforts since then to try to rebuild their enrichment capability," Gabbard said in prepared testimony to the Senate.

Iran's government appears intact, if degraded, US spy chief says

WASHINGTON- Iran's government has been degraded since the war began on February 28, but it appears to be intact and Tehran and its proxies remain capable of attacking U.S. and allies' interests in the Middle East, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said on Wednesday.

"The regime in Iran appears to be intact but largely degraded by Operation Epic Fury," Gabbard said, referring to the U.S.-Israel military campaign against

Iran, in her opening statement to the Senate Intelligence Committee's annual hearing on Worldwide Threats to the United States.

"Even so, Iran and its proxies remain capable of and continue to attack U.S. and allied interests in the Middle East. If a hostile regime survives, it will seek to begin a years-long effort to rebuild its missiles and UAV (drone) forces," Gabbard said.

The 2-1/2-hour hearing was the first significant public appearance since the start of the war by Gabbard, who has kept a low profile for months.

The hearing identified China, Russia, North Korea and Iran as top adversaries, but largely focused on the Iran war, now in its third week. Lawmakers - including some of President Donald Trump's Republicans as well as Democrats - have said they want more information about a campaign that has killed thousands of people, disrupted the lives of millions and shaken energy and stock markets.

US judge orders Trump administration to reopen Voice of America

A judge in the US has ruled that the effective closure of the Voice of America (VOA) last year was "illegal" and that hundreds of its journalists should be reinstated. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth has given authorities one week to put the international broadcaster back on air. The VOA was set up during World War Two to counter Nazi propaganda.

Just weeks after returning to office as president, Donald Trump issued an executive order to close the broadcaster which his officials accused of left-wing bias. Trump also ordered outlets such as Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia to be "eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law".

US Attorney General Bondi formally summoned to Congress in Epstein case

A US congressional committee has formally summoned Attorney General Pam Bondi, demanding that she answer questions over her handling of the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, wrote in the subpoena letter that his committee is investigating the "possible mismanagement" of the investigation.

The move comes weeks after Nancy Mace, a Republican lawmaker, introduced a motion to subpoena Bondi and accused the justice department of a "cover-up" in releasing the Epstein files.

Iran Crisis: After Larijani Killing, Who Else In Tehran Can The US Talk To?

Israel’s killing of Ali Larijani, a veteran Iranian power broker known for pragmatism and deep national-security experience, has shifted Tehran’s wartime leadership further toward hardliners, raising doubts about prospects for diplomacy. A pillar of the Islamic Republic for decades, Larijani bridged rival factions and worked closely with late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Before the war escalated, he played a central role in nuclear diplomacy, traveling across Gulf states and to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin. After Khamenei’s assassination on Feb. 28, Larijani emerged as a key civilian leader shaping Iran’s wartime strategy, even described by Israel as Tehran’s de-facto leader.

His death comes as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran enters its third week, roiling the oil-rich Persian Gulf and pushing up global energy prices amid threats to the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that removing a figure

Larijani was the only figure in the lineup of senior powerbrokers with a link to the politics that characterised the presidency of moderate cleric Hassan Rouhani and Abbas Araghchi, the current foreign minister.

US Military Hits Iranian Missile Sites With Heavy “Bunker-Buster” Bombs

The bombing raid comes after Iran closed off the Strait of Hormuz, through which onefifth of the world's oil flows, in retaliation for the war on the country by the United States and Israel.

Tehran: In the first major action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the US military has said it had hit Iranian missile sites near the critical waterway with some of the most powerful bombs in the American arsenal. The US Central Command announced that it had fired multiple 5,000-pound (approx. 2,268-kilogram) deep penetrator bombs on hardened Iranian missile sites along Iran's coastline near the Strait.

"US forces successfully employed multiple 5,000-pound deep penetrator munitions on hardened Iranian missile sites along Iran's coastline near the Strait of Hormuz," Central Command said in a statement on X.

"The Iranian anti-ship cruise missiles in these sites posed a risk to international shipping in the strait."

The bombing raid comes after Iran closed off the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world's supply oil flows, in retaliation for the war on the country by the United States and Israel. The chokehold has massively disrupted maritime traffic and caused a global surge in energy prices.

The US move came after most US allies, including NATO, rejected President Donald Trump's calls to help secure the Strait of Hormuz to ease a blockade on the region's oil exports.

de-escalation.

An interim council—comprising

President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei and a senior Guardian Council cleric—initially took over leadership duties. Alongside them, hardline figures including parliamentary speaker MohammadBaqer Qalibaf gained influence.

Qalibaf, a former IRGC commander and Tehran mayor, is widely associated with security-first policies and support for Mojtaba Khamenei’s elevation.

Larijani was also one of the few senior insiders linked to the more moderate era of former president Hassan Rouhani and the 2015 nuclear deal. His absence could further sideline pragmatic voices such as Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Observers say Tehran has lost a rare insider who connected battlefield strategy with political calculation— leaving a leadership that may be more rigid, less coherent, and potentially more confrontational as the conflict intensifies.

Chinese national charged for trying to smuggle 2,000 ants from Kenya

AChinese man and his Kenyan associate have been charged with illegally dealing in wildlife species after they were caught trying to smuggle more than 2,000 live queen garden ants out of Kenya.

Zhang Kequn was arrested at the international airport in the capital Nairobi last week after authorities discovered the large consignment of ants in his luggage –each of them either stashed in a test tube or wrapped in tissue.

On Tuesday, a court in Nairobi heard that Zhang bought the ants from Charles Mwangi at 10,000 Kenyan shillings ($77; £58) for every 100 of them.

Kenyan authorities have been warning about of a growing demand for garden ants in Europe and Asia, where collectors keep them as pets.

Officials have not said if this were the case for the insects Zhang tried to bring out of the country, but his luggage was bound for China.

The two men, who were also charged with conspiring to commit a felony, remain in custody. Mwangi faces a second count of the illegal dealing charge, after he was found with more live ants in a separate occasion.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to Nairobi media outlets.

Zhang's attorney David Lusweti said the men did not know that they were breaking the law.

"They have seen potential that they are able to sell outside the country, they believe that they can make a living out of it," he told the Associated Press. Zhang and Mwangi will appear before the court again on 27 March.More arrests are expected, a senior official from the Kenya Wildlife Service earlier told the BBC, as investigators expand their probe into other towns where ant harvesting was suspected to be ongoing.

Air India Restarts 48 Middle East Flights, Dubai Services Resume

Air India has announced that it will operate 48 flights to key destinations across the Middle East today, signaling a partial restoration of services in the region. The airline also confirmed that flights to Dubai will resume after recent disruptions.

Operations to several Gulf cities are being reinstated as airspace restrictions ease and security assessments allow normal schedules to gradually return.

The move is expected to provide relief to passengers affected by cancellations and delays over the past few days.

The airline said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with aviation authorities to ensure passenger safety while restoring connectivity between India and major Middle Eastern hubs.

Iran Strike Damages Qatar Site

There is "extensive damage" from missile attacks on the Ras Laffan industrial site, Qatar's stateowned petroleum company says. Ras Laffan was among the sites listed by Iran in a warning that it would take "decisive action" after its South Pars gas field facilities were reportedly hit by Israeli strikes. Iran's South Pars is part of the world's largest natural gas field, with both Qatar and Iran operating facilities in the areaIsrael is yet to comment. Three women in the occupied West Bank were killed after shrapnel from an intercepted missile reportedly fell on a beauty salon. Retaliatory strikes by Iran and its allied militia groups continue across the Middle East - with blasts and drone interceptions reported in Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Earlier, Israel launched a series of strikes on Lebanon's capital Beirut, as it continues its offensive against Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Iran's Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib has been killed in an overnight strike, the country's president confirms.

Gulf States Have Significant Capabilities Against Iran

Riyadh: Amid continued Iranian strikes on regional energy facilities, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, warned Tehran that Gulf states’ patience is “not unlimited,” calling the attacks a “blatant attempt at blackmail.” He said four ballistic missiles launched toward Riyadh were intercepted just before a meeting of regional and Islamic

foreign ministers in the Saudi capital. Al Saud described the strikes as premeditated and timed to intimidate participants, adding that any remaining trust in Iran “has been completely shattered.” He rejected Tehran’s justifications as unconvincing and urged it to “recalculate” immediately. While declining to specify what would trigger retaliation, he stressed that Saudi Arabia and its partners possess “very significant capacities and capabilities” that could be used if attacks continue.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s administration is considering deploying thousands of additional U.S. troops to reinforce operations in the Middle East as the conflict with Iran enters its third week, according to U.S. officials and sources familiar with the discussions. Options under review include securing oil tanker routes through the Strait of Hormuz and potentially sending ground forces to Iran’s Kharg Island, which handles most of the country’s oil exports. Officials also discussed securing Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles. The White House said no decision has been made. Since February 28, U.S. forces have conducted over 7,800 strikes, targeting Iran’s navy, missile systems and defense infrastructure. The potential escalation underscores growing concerns in Washington about safeguarding global energy supplies and preventing further regional spillover, as tensions have rattled international oil markets and drawn reactions from key allies. Defense officials said any expansion of the mission would aim to deter additional Iranian retaliation while maintaining freedom of navigation in critical waterways, though they acknowledged the risks of deeper U.S. involvement in a prolonged conflict.

'Only Simple Flag-Hoisting': Pak Cancels Republic Day Parade Amid Oil Crisis

Pakistan has cancelled its military parade and ceremonial events that were scheduled for March 23, the country's Republic Day. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's office announced on Tuesday. The decision has been taken in the backdrop of a crisis that has been triggered due to disruptions in oil supply because of the ongoing war between the US-Israel and Iran. "In light of the ongoing Gulf oil crisis and the austerity measures announced by the government, it has been decided that the Pakistan Day parade scheduled for March 23 and all associated ceremonies will not be held," the statement read.

Pentagon Seeks $200 Billion for Iran War, Nearly Half of Tehran’s GDP

Washington: The Pentagon is seeking more than $200 billion from Congress to fund President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran, according to The Washington Post. The request would support operations that began on February 28 and expand weapons production.

So far, U.S. forces have carried out over 7,800 strikes, flown more than 8,000 combat missions and hit more than 120 Iranian vessels, U.S. Central Command said. The first week alone reportedly cost $11 billion. If approved, the additional funding could push total U.S. war spending beyond half of Iran’s 2025 GDP of $356.5 billion. Congress has already cleared $838.5 billion in defense

funding for fiscal 2026. The proposed supplemental package is expected to trigger a political battle, with Democrats critical and Republicans yet to outline a clear path past the Senate’s 60-vote threshold. The funding push is being led inside the Pentagon by Deputy Defense Secretary Steven Feinberg, focusing on replenishing precision munitions and boosting defense production. The request would exceed U.S. spending on Ukraine, a conflict Trump previously criticized for its cost. Officials said the supplemental package is also aimed at ensuring the military maintains global readiness while sustaining operations in the Middle East. However, uncertainty remains over how much the White House will ultimately ask lawmakers to approve and whether the proposal can secure bipartisan backing.

US Strikes Iran Missile Sites Near Hormuz With Massive Bunker-Buster Bomb

The bombing raid comes after Iran closed off the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world's oil flows, in retaliation for the war on the country by the United States and Israel

Tehran:

In a major escalation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the United States military said it struck Iranian missile sites near the strategic waterway using some of its most powerful conventional weapons. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it deployed multiple 5,000-pound (around 2,268kg) deep-penetrator “bunker buster” bombs against hardened missile positions along Iran’s coastline.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said the targeted sites housed Iranian anti-ship cruise missiles that posed a direct threat to international shipping in the strait. The action follows Iran’s move to close the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for military actions by the US and Israel. The disruption has significantly affected global

maritime traffic, as nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the narrow chokepoint, triggering sharp spikes in energy prices.

The strikes came amid diplomatic friction between

Iran's Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib Killed In Strikes: Israel

Katz said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given the military a free hand to kill any other senior Iranian official being targeted without taking additional approvals.

Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday that they "eliminated" Iran's Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib in a strike overnight. However, Iran has not confirmed Khatib's death.

While announcing Khatib's death, Katz said that "significant surprises are expected throughout this day on all the fronts," without elaborating.

"We will continue to thwart and hunt them all down," he said.

Katz said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given the military a free hand to kill any other senior Iranian official being targeted without taking additional approvals. This would be the third high-profile assassination of an Iranian leader in two days. On Tuesday, Israel eliminated Iran's security chief, Ali Larijani, and Gholamreza Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' all-volunteer Basij force.

Khatib was a Shiite cleric who worked in a variety of positions in Iran's judiciary and the Intelligence Ministry. He served in the Revolutionary Guard in the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s and was wounded in combat.

Washington and its allies. Several US partners, including members of NATO, declined President Donald Trump’s call to help secure the waterway. Trump expressed frustration over the lack of allied support, arguing that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is in the global interest. Iran, however, continues to deny seeking nuclear arms, maintaining that its nuclear programme is for peaceful energy purposes.

The 5,000-pound deeppenetrator bombs—commonly known as bunker busters—are designed to destroy fortified or deeply buried targets. According to past US defense reports, each costs an estimated $288,000. While powerful, they are less destructive than the 30,000-pound bombs previously used by the US against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Saudi Arabia to host Arab, Islamic ministers to discuss war

Saudi Arabia will host a consultative meeting of foreign ministers from a number of Arab and Islamic countries in Riyadh on Wednesday to discuss ways to support regional security and stability given the Iran war, the kingdom's foreign ministry said.

A Turkish diplomatic source said separately that representatives from Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Qatar, Syria, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates would attend the meeting. There are scant signs of de-escalation nearly three weeks into the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran that has engulfed the region and caused unprecedented disruption to global

energy supplies. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who intends to visit other countries after Riyadh, will underline the need for a negotiated and peaceful end to the war, which if continued risks lasting damage to ties between regional countries, the diplomatic source said. NATO-member Turkey, which neighbours Iran, had sought to mediate between Iran and the United States before the war began.

It has condemned U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran as a violation of international law, and also criticised Iran's attacks on Gulf states as unacceptable.

India's cheap weight-loss drugs could reshape global obesity fight

India may soon see a dramatic shift in access to weight-loss treatment as the patent for semaglutide expires, opening the door to cheaper generics. The molecule powers blockbuster drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy made by Novo Nordisk. With domestic firms preparing to launch branded copies, prices could drop by more than half, expanding access across the country.

Investment bank Jefferies has described the development as a potential “magic-pill moment” for India, estimating the domestic semaglutide market could eventually reach $1bn with the right pricing and uptake. Analysts expect around 50 generic versions to enter the market within months, mirroring past trends in India’s highly competitive drug industry.

Currently, monthly treatment costs range from Rs.8,800 toRs.16,000. Experts predict generics could lower that to Rs.3,000–Rs.5,000. India, which has over 77 million people with type-2 diabetes and one of the world’s

Surge in US gas prices deepens political peril for Trump over Iran

In the third week of the joint US-Israeli war against Iran, Donald Trump faces decisions that could define the rest of his presidency. But if the American commander-in-chief is grappling with a war of choice that seems in danger of spiralling in ways he can't control, those concerns are not playing out in public. In more than an hour of public remarks at the White House on Monday, he discussed his thinking on the state of the war effortand also on Kennedy Center renovations, White House ballroom construction plans, this year's World Cup tournament, the health of a Republican congressman and a host of other unrelated topics. It was classic Trump, as unscripted and wide-ranging as ever. This past weekend, he played golf at his Florida resort. And on his Truth Social website, he devoted nearly as much time to railing about the Supreme Court as he did to discussing the Iran War. While Trump may be interested in other topics, he is confronting a lesson previous American presidents have learned the hard waythat war can consume a presidency whether they want it to or not. And evidence continues to mount that a war that Trump had previously said was "already won" and "very complete" now has a timeline that could stretch for weeks or even longer.

On Monday afternoon, Trump announced that the US had requested that a planned presidential trip to China in early April be delayed for a month because of the war. "The president's utmost responsibility right now as commander in chief is to ensure the continued success of Operation Epic Fury," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said when the move was first reported, referring to the military name for the Iran war.

largest overweight populations, could see significant health benefits as affordability improves.

Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which regulate appetite and blood sugar. Originally developed for diabetes, they are now widely used for weight loss. Doctors say cheaper versions could help patients prepare for heart procedures, knee surgeries and treat conditions like sleep apnoea. However, medical experts urge caution. Side effects can include nausea, digestive problems and rare complications such as pancreatitis. Rapid weight loss without proper diet and exercise may also lead to muscle loss. Physicians warn against misuse by unqualified practitioners and stress that treatment must be supervised.

India’s pharmaceutical strength in generics positions it well for both domestic expansion and exports. Yet regulators and doctors emphasise that strict quality control and responsible prescribing will be crucial as access widens.

India Forex Reserves Must Reach $1

Trillion: Ex-RBI Deputy

Amid rising global geopolitical uncertainty and intensifying financial and commodity market volatility, policymakers and economists are sharpening their focus on building economic resilience through stronger reserve buffers.

After finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament of the government’s plan to create a Rs.1-trillion economic stabilisation fund to provide fiscal headroom in times of global shocks, former Reserve Bank of India deputy governor Michael Debabrata Patra has argued for building a much larger foreign exchange reserve buffer of at least $1 trillion.

In an article published on BasisPoint Insight, Patra emphasised that the level of reserves plays a crucial role in shaping market confidence and deterring speculative attacks. “The level of reserves is important from a market sensitivity

point of view,” he wrote, adding that betting against such a large reserve position would be “beyond the reach of the opportunistic and/or the faint-hearted”.

His remarks come at a time when India’s external position is facing renewed strain. The rupee weakened further on Tuesday, declining 12 paise to settle at a low of 92.40 against the US dollar, as rising crude oil prices and sustained foreign fund outflows linked to the West Asia crisis weighed on sentiments.

Data released by the Reserve Bank of India showed that the country’s foreign exchange reserves dropped sharply by $11.68 billion to $716.81 billion in the week ended March 6, compared with $728.49 billion in the previous week. The decline reflects aggressive dollar sales by the central bank to stabilise the currency.

Ali Larijani’s Death Deepens Iran Leadership Crisis

The Israeli air strike which killed Iran's security chief, Ali Larijani, has removed one of the Islamic Republic's most experienced and influential policy makers at a critical moment. Larijani was not a military commander, but he was a central figure in shaping Iran's strategic decisions. As secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, he sat at the heart of decision-making on war, diplomacy, and national security.

India Condemns

Pakistan Over Kabul Strike

New Delhi:

India has condemned Pakistan's airstrikes on a hospital in the Afghan capital, Kabul, calling the attack a "barbaric" and "cowardly" act of violence. This came after the Taliban regime accused Pakistan of killing at least 400 people in an airstrike on a drug rehabilitation hospital in the Afghan capital late on Monday.

Pakistan has, meanwhile, denied the accusation that it had hit a hospital, saying its strikes, which were also conducted in eastern Afghanistan, did not hit any civilian sites.

Trump: “Weak on Security, Good He’s Out”

US President Donald Trump said that it was a "good thing" that Joseph Kent, the head of the National Counterterrorism Centre, resigned because he claimed that Iran was not a threat. Speaking during a press briefing at the Oval Office, Trump said, "Well, I read his statement. I always thought he was a nice guy, but he was always weak on security." "When I read his statement, I realised that it's a good thing that he is out because he said that Iran was not a threat.

Iran Fires Multiple-Warhead Missiles at Israel in ‘Revenge’ Strike

Iran acknowledged launching multiplewarhead missiles at Israel early Wednesday, with the Revolutionary Guard describing the attack as revenge for Israel killing top security official Ali Larijani. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Wednesday confirmed the killing of its secretary, along with his son Morteza Larijani and the head of his office, Alireza Bayat, as well as several guards, the Associated Press reported.

he “cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran”. Joe Kent was confirmed by the Senate in July last year.

Iran stepped up its attacks targeting US embassies and oil facilities in the Middle East, with Tehran, on Tuesday (Mar 17), launching rockets and at least five drones at the US embassy in Baghdad from areas around the city. According to news agency Reuters, the Iraqi security sources described the attack as the most intense since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that he’s “not happy” with the UK after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said it would not be drawn into a “wider war” over Iran.

Fake Call Centre Busted in Ahmedabad, Four Arrested

Ahmedabad:

In a late-night operation on Monday, the Ahmedabad City Cyber Crime Branch raided a residential property in Chandkheda, uncovering a sophisticated illegal call centre dedicated to defrauding Canadian citizens. The scam involved impersonating Canadian tax officials to siphon funds through gift cards and unauthorised bank access. The accused used a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) software called EyeBeam to mask their location and appear as legitimate callers.

Top Trump Counterterrorism Chief Resigns Over Iran War Dispute

Joseph Kent, head of the National Counterterrorism Center, has resigned over the US-Israel war against Iran, saying he “cannot in good conscience” support the conflict. In his resignation letter, Kent wrote that Iran posed no “imminent threat” to the United States and alleged that pressure from Israel and its American lobby influenced President Donald Trump’s decision to go to war.

Kent claimed Trump had previously acknowledged that prolonged Middle East wars drained American lives and resources. He accused senior Israeli officials and influential US media voices of running a “misinformation campaign” to build

Trump says he can do ‘anything’ he wants with Cuba

U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against Cuba on Monday (March 16, 2026), saying he expected to have the “honor” of “taking Cuba in some form” and that “I can do anything I want” with the neighbouring country.

The threatening statements come even as Cuba and the United States have opened talks aimed at improving their largely adverse relations, which have reached one of their most contentious moments in the 67 years since Fidel Castro overthrew what had been a close U.S. ally.

Trump Slams Allies Who Rebuffed Calls to Secure Strait of Hormuz

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have reached out to the president’s Middle East envoy and others in the US administration, attempting to reopen a diplomatic channel, White House officials told Donald Trump sharply criticized several allied nations for refusing to support his call to help secure the vital Strait of Hormuz, accusing them of failing to share the burden of protecting a key global oil shipping route. He argued that while the United States has long taken responsibility for safeguarding international waterways, other countries that benefit economically from the region’s stability have been reluctant to contribute military or logistical assistance. Trump warned that continued inaction by allies could strain partnerships and undermine collective security efforts at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East. The remarks come amid rising regional tensions and concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies passing through the strategic waterway. Trump suggested that nations heavily dependent on Gulf oil should play a more active role in ensuring maritime security rather than relying primarily on U.S. forces.

The Taliban government said that a large section of the hospital has been destroyed in a Pakistani airstrike and the number of deaths may increase.

Pakistan denied the Afghan government's allegations and called them "baseless", saying that no hospital was targeted in Kabul.

The alleged attack came hours after Afghan officials said the two sides exchanged fire along their common border, killing four people in Afghanistan, as the deadliest fighting between the neighbours in years entered a third week.

According to reports, Pakistan's military recently struck an addiction treatment centre in Kabul's 9th police district, causing heavy casualties.

Trump Claims Over 7,000 Strikes on Iran, Says 100 Naval Ships Destroyed

Washington, March 16, 2026: Donald Trump on Monday made sweeping claims about the ongoing Middle East conflict, stating that the United States has carried out more than 7,000 strikes on Iranian military targets and effectively dismantled Iran’s military capabilities. Speaking about the escalating tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, Trump asserted that Iran’s air force and navy have been “almost completely destroyed,” with more than 100 naval vessels and multiple warships sunk.

Trump further claimed that Iran’s anti-aircraft systems and radar networks have been wiped out and that several key leaders have been killed. He said the military campaign, which he described as operating at “full strength” in recent days, should

Referring to operations in the Gulf region, Trump stated that US forces had struck Kharg Island, destroying most installations while deliberately avoiding oil storage facilities and pipelines to allow for potential future reconstruction. He said the decision was made with Iran’s long-term rebuilding in mind, even though military action was deemed necessary. The US President also declared that the Strait of Hormuz is now under control and can no longer be used by Iran as strategic leverage. He added that several countries have expressed willingness to assist, while again calling on China and Japan to step forward and share responsibility in ensuring regional stability and maritime security.

Kentucky Gujarati

Arrested in U Visa Fraud Case

A 52-year-old Gujarati man living in Pulaski County, Kentucky, has been arrested by federal authorities in connection with an alleged visa fraud conspiracy tied to a fake robbery scheme. Ramesh Patel was taken into custody outside his residence in Somerset after a federal warrant was executed on Thursday morning. Authorities allege he played an active role in staging a fake robbery in Boston to support a fraudulent U Visa application. Investigators are examining whether Patel directly benefited from the scheme or assisted others in securing immigration benefits.

The arrest is part of a broader federal investigation into alleged U Visa fraud involving multiple individuals across Massachusetts, Kentucky, and Ohio. Last year, a New York-based accused in the same case was sentenced to 20 months in prison. According to local officials, multiple agencies— including the FBI, ICE, DHS, Kentucky Alcohol Beverage Control, and the London Police Department—participated in Patel’s arrest. He is expected to be presented before a federal court in Boston, where a judge will determine whether he will remain in custody or be released pending trial. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.

Authorities have also indicated that deportation proceedings may follow due to his lack of legal immigration status.

Iran Strikes: Blasts in Dubai, US Embassy in Baghdad Attacked

Dubai/New Delhi:

A building in Dubai's financial hub has been hit by debris from an intercepted attack.

This is the second such attack in less than 24 hours as the US-Israel-Iran war enters day 15. No fire occurred, and no injuries were reported.

"Authorities confirmed that the incident caused by debris from a successful interception, which struck the facade of a building in central Dubai, has been fully contained," the Dubai Media

A drone struck the US embassy in Baghdad, an Iraqi security official said, as an AFP journalist saw smoke rising from the complex.

Office informed via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

On Friday, the facade of a building in central Dubai was hit by debris from an interception. An AFP correspondent saw the damaged building in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) after hearing the bangs.

"I jumped out of bed -- that was the loudest sound I've ever heard," one of the witnesses living close by told AFP, requesting anonymity.

"It was so loud, I was so sure when I looked out the window that it was going to be something catastrophic... The ground shook," they added.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the future of NATO could be “very bad” if member nations fail to support efforts to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said countries that depend on the key oil route must take responsibility for keeping it open. The strait is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes.

His remarks come amid rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns that disruptions in the waterway could severely impact global energy markets and trade. Trump added that if allies expect U.S. protection and security support, they must also contribute to safeguarding crucial global trade routes.

He also stressed that keeping the Strait open is essential not only for oil supply but for maintaining economic stability worldwide.

UAE Takes Action Against Indians Over Misleading Posts

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ordered the arrest of 35 individuals, including 19 Indians, for posting videos on social media that contained misleading or fabricated content amid the Middle East war that began late last month after US-Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Iran. Authorities in the UAE said the suspects will face an expedited trial after a probe revealed they used digital platforms to circulate manipulated footage and narratives linked to ongoing regional tensions.

Gujarati Son Deported From U.S., Parents Still in Detention

A 26-year-old Gujarati man has been deported from the United States while his parents remain in detention for months after a series of immigration and employment complications. The family had entered North America through Canada in 2024 and later crossed into the U.S., where they applied for asylum and started working. According to the family, they had agreed to repay a large sum of money to an agent who arranged their travel and employment. They began working in Kentucky but claim they were not paid for several months and their immigration documents were kept by the employer. Because of this, they failed to appear before U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as required.

During a court hearing in September 2025, the young man was ordered deported after authorities found he had not complied with immigration procedures. Unable to afford a lengthy legal battle, he chose voluntary departure and returned to India, where he now faces a 10-year entry ban.

Later, ICE conducted a raid at the workplace where his parents were employed. Without valid work authorization, they were arrested and remain in detention while awaiting deportation. The family says the ordeal has left them financially devastated and separated.

US Announces $10M Reward for Info on Iran’s Leader

U.S. officials have announced a reward of up to $10 million for information related to Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei and a powerful figure within Iran’s political and religious establishment. The reward offer is part of Washington’s broader efforts to increase pressure on Iranian leadership amid escalating tensions between the two countries. According to officials, the reward seeks credible information that could help authorities better understand Mojtaba Khamenei’s activities, networks, or influence within Iran’s ruling structure.

Although he does not hold a formal government post, Mojtaba is widely believed to wield significant influence behind the scenes and has often been mentioned as a possible successor to the current Supreme Leader.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened conflict and growing hostility between the United States and Iran. Analysts say the move signals a new level of political pressure from Washington aimed at targeting individuals considered central to Iran’s leadership structure. Iranian authorities have not immediately responded to the report.

US "Begging World" To Buy Russian Crude: Iran

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Saturday criticised the United States over its stance on Russian oil, claiming Washington was now "begging" countries across the globe, including India, to purchase Russian crude despite earlier pressure to stop such imports.

In a post on X, Araghchi said, "The US spent months on bullying India into ending oil imports from Russia. After two weeks of war with Iran, White House is now begging the world-including India--to buy Russian crude."

US Bombs Iran’s Kharg Island Targets

The United States has significantly increased its military presence in West Asia as tensions with Iran continue to escalate after nearly two weeks of conflict. A U.S. official said about 2,500 Marines and an amphibious assault ship have been deployed to the region,

marking a major reinforcement of American forces.

Hours after the deployment was reported, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out strikes on military targets on Kharg Island. The island is the main

hub for Iran’s oil exports and plays a critical role in the country’s energy infrastructure. Trump said the targets were “obliterated” and warned that Iran’s oil facilities on the island could also become targets if tensions continue to rise.

The strike comes amid growing warnings from Iranian leaders. A day earlier, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament cautioned that any attack on such strategic sites would trigger a stronger retaliation from Tehran, raising fears of further escalation in the conflict.

Meanwhile, in the Iranian capital of Tehran, a powerful explosion shook a central square where thousands had gathered for a large state-organised rally in support of Palestinians and in opposition to Israel. The rally is held annually and was attended by several senior government officials. Israel had earlier warned that it might target the area in central Tehran. Despite the explosion, no casualties were immediately reported. The incident highlights the growing tension and determination on both sides as the regional conflict intensifies.

U.S. federal authorities have charged eleven Indian nationals for allegedly staging armed robberies at convenience stores in order to fraudulently obtain immigration benefits. Of the eleven accused, ten have been arrested, while one suspect has already been deported to India.

Authorities said the group faces charges of conspiracy to commit visa fraud. Investigators believe the scheme attempted to misuse the immigration system by fabricating violent crime incidents to qualify for special visa protections. If convicted, the accused could face prison sentences, fines, and possible deportation from the United States.

Gujaratis Sentenced to 4 Years in U.S. Parcel Fraud Case, Face Deportation

A U.S. federal court has sentenced two Indian nationals from Gujarat, Chintan Parekh and Mehul Darji, to four years in prison each for their role in a large-scale parcel fraud and gold scam. The two men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud after being arrested by authorities. Upon completion of their prison terms, both will be deported as they were living in the United States without legal status. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the accused were involved in managing and distributing gold and cash collected from victims of scam operations. Their associate, Sheetal Singh, was also sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to repay $6.6 million to victims. Court documents revealed that the group targeted elderly individuals,

Stuntman First, Actor Late Akshay Kumar

Actor Akshay Kumar spoke passionately about his deep bond with stunt performers and addressed questions surrounding his public image during an engaging and candid conversation with journalist Rajdeep Sardesai at the India Today Conclave. Known for performing many of his own stunts and for his disciplined lifestyle, Kumar offered rare emotional insight into why he feels a personal responsibility toward the stunt community in Bollywood. Responding to a question about his initiative to provide insurance support to Bollywood stunt artists, Kumar revealed that the decision was not a publicity-driven move but something rooted in his own journey in the industry. “I know all the stuntmen. I know them by name. I consider myself a stuntman first and then an actor,” he said, underlining how his early career shaped his perspective. Before becoming one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, Kumar worked closely with action teams and stunt coordinators. He explained that his background in martial arts and action cinema helped him understand the physical and financial struggles faced by stunt performers. “I have grown up with them in this industry. I have trained with them, rehearsed with them, and seen the kind of risks they take every single day,” he shared.

Highlighting the dangers involved in stunt work, Kumar spoke about the harsh realities that often go unnoticed by the audience. “Today when people get hurt, they don’t even have the money to get their teeth fixed. I have seen such people who have lost their lives. Two stuntmen died in front of me. One of them had got married recently,” he said, his voice reflecting the emotional weight of those memories. He added that such incidents left a lasting impact on him and strengthened his resolve to push for financial protection for them.

Kumar emphasised that stunt performers literally risk their lives to make actors appear heroic on screen. “They are doing it for whom? So that we look good. The audience claps for us, but behind every action scene there are 10–15 people risking serious injury. If we can’t even insure them, then it’s a curse on us,” he remarked. Calling the initiative a small but necessary step, he described it as a way of “giving back” to the industry that made him who he is. He further said that the stunt community forms the backbone of commercial cinema, especially in action-heavy films. According to him, conversations around their safety, health benefits, and financial security must become mainstream within the film fraternity. “They deserve respect, security, and recognition — not just applause in the background,” he added. The discussion also shifted to the perception of Kumar as a nationalist figure — an image shaped partly by his choice of films focusing on social issues, patriotism, and real-life heroes, as well as his public gestures and statements.

Nana Patekar Warned Pankaj Tripathi Over Small Role in Kaala

Veteran actor Nana Patekar recently shared an amusing yet candid anecdote from the sets of Kaala, the Rajinikanth-starrer directed by Pa Ranjith. While the film is remembered for the intense face-off between Rajinikanth and Nana Patekar, the presence of Pankaj Tripathi in a relatively small role caught Patekar off guard.

In a recent interview with News 18, Nana revealed that he was surprised to see Tripathi—now widely regarded as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema—playing a minor character in such a big-budget film. Recalling the moment, Nana said, “We were shooting the film Kaala with Rajinikanth

Anna. Pankaj Tripathi was playing a very small role, of a police officer. I saw him and asked, ‘Pankaj, what are you doing here?’” Tripathi reportedly responded that it was a small role, but he took it because he wanted the opportunity to work with stalwarts like Nana Patekar and Rajinikanth. However, Nana wasn’t convinced. In his trademark blunt style, he told the actor, “Why do you take such roles?” When Tripathi explained his reasoning, Nana added halfjokingly but firmly, “Never take such roles again, or I’ll hit you.” Despite the seemingly harsh warning, the remark reflected Nana Patekar’s respect for Tripathi’s talent.

Shreya Ghoshal on Why She Rejected ‘Fevicol Se’

One of India’s most celebrated playback singers, Shreya Ghoshal recently opened up about turning down a song from the 2012 film Dabangg 2. During a conversation with entrepreneur and podcast host Raj Shamani, the singer revealed that she had refused to record the popular item number ‘Fevicol Se’ because she was uncomfortable with the nature of its lyrics. Reflecting on the decision, Shreya explained that the song’s wording felt excessively objectifying, which made her reluctant to be associated with it. Speaking about the moment she chose to step away, she said, “There was a song in that film, which had too much objectification. It was not subtle – it was like ‘chicken bana ke khale aur yeh karke lipat le’ - I cannot say these words. It just makes me feel red on the face. I cannot do it. So, there were a few moments from which I folded my hands and left”.

Kalol Youth Accused of $180K US Store Theft

Store owner claims employee siphoned funds over three years before fleeing South Carolina after partial repayment.

South Carolina: A 25-year-old Kalol native, Mitul Patel, has been accused of stealing approximately $180,000 from the store where he worked for three years in Anderson County. The complaint was filed by store owner Ramesh Patel, who operates Energy Market in Iva and owns three other stores in the state. According to the owner, Mitul arrived in the US in 2023 and was hired soon after. Within two months, he was given full operational control of the store. At the time, monthly inside sales were about $150,000, including $40,000 in vape products. However, business figures reportedly declined to $115,000 by the end of 2025, with Mitul blaming rising competition.

Patel alleges that during his visit to India in January 2025, Mitul siphoned off cash and merchandise. The fraud allegedly involved creating duplicate invoices—paying one himself while showing another to the owner—and independently selling goods for personal gain. Suspicion arose in February 2025 after reviewing CCTV footage and bank statements. After being confronted, Mitul reportedly admitted to taking $20,000 and later returned that amount before disappearing in October 2025. A theft report has been filed, and he is believed to be in Georgia.

LPG Black Market Hits Eateries Across India

Small restaurants and street-side eateries from Delhi to Bengaluru are facing mounting pressure as black marketing of LPG cylinders disrupts regular supply chains. Commercial kitchen operators say that a growing diversion of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders into the open market has created artificial shortages, forcing them to purchase fuel at inflated rates. Industry representatives claim that middlemen are hoarding cylinders and selling them at premiums, especially during peak demand seasons. As a result, small dhabas, food stalls, and mid-sized restaurants are struggling to manage operating costs. Many report paying significantly above the regulated commercial LPG price to keep their

kitchens running.

Not meant for commercial use, domestic LPG cylinders are lifeline for roadside eateries

Restaurant associations warn that rising fuel costs are directly impacting menu prices. Several establishments have already increased food rates, while others are cutting portion sizes or reducing operating hours to offset losses. The issue is particularly severe for small businesses that rely heavily on daily cash flow and cannot afford bulk storage or alternative energy sources. Officials have acknowledged complaints and say enforcement drives are being intensified to curb illegal diversion and hoarding.

Iran Claims USS Abraham Lincoln Hit, US Calls It False

Washington: Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed that its ballistic missiles have struck the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, rendering it non-operational and forcing it to retreat from the Gulf waters. Washington has, however, denied the claim, saying it's not true. Soon after the Iranian reports surfaced, the US dismissed them, saying they were "not true". "The reports are not true," a defence official told news agency AFP. The United States has sent two aircraft carriers to the Middle East to take part in the massive air campaign against Iran that Washington launched with Israeli forces on February 28.

Gujarati-Origin Brothers Face Up to 400 Years in US Prison for Visa Scam

New York: Bhaskar Savani (60) and Arun Savani (58), brothers of Gujarati origin, could face up to 400 years in prison in the United States for charges including visa fraud, healthcare fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion. The Savani brothers allegedly ran these schemes under a company named Savani Group, exploiting foreign nationals—including Indians—by approving visas under the pretense of employment.

According to victims, the Savani Group orchestrated fraud worth millions of dollars, including false medical billing. Bhaskar Savani, a dentist by profession, is accused of involvement in healthcare-related scams. Authorities say the brothers’ criminal activities spanned multiple states and had been ongoing for

several years.

Despite investigations starting before 2023, the brothers publicly shared social media posts celebrating meetings with FBI Director Kash Patel, which sparked controversy.

Indian-American Singer Malvika on Indian Influences in her Music

Born in Los Angeles to Indian parents, Malvika just released her new EP Online/ IRL, a cinematic pop project that blends modern production with subtle South Asian influences, including rhythms shaped by her training in Bharatanatyam. The result is a deeply reflective body of work that explores identity, visibility, and the complex tension between living authentically and performing success in a hyper-digital world.

In this conversation, Malvika reflects on growing up in a South Asian household where achievement often shaped expectations, navigating identity in the age of social media, and how her cultural roots naturally inform her sound. You were born and raised in Los Angeles in an immigrant household. What was your childhood like growing up as an Indian-American there? Tell us a bit about your parents.

I grew up in a joint-family household, my cousins and I have moms who are twins and dads who are brothers, so there was always a lot of life happening around me. I was the quiet one, constantly observing. Inside the house, traditional Indian values were deeply instilled. Outside, there was a completely different world to navigate. That duality shaped me early. I remember feeling nervous bringing friends home, wondering if they would understand how my family operated. But I also grew up surrounded by love and discipline. My mom made sure I stayed deeply connected to my culture through Bharatanatyam, and I am incredibly grateful for that foundation. My father led by example; hardworking, consistent, devoted.

I also witnessed burnout. Neither of my parents took breaks. They hustled to ensure we were secure and cared for. As the eldest daughter, I internalized a sense of responsibility early on, helping at home, contributing wherever I could. That pressure wasn’t always spoken, but it was felt. Growing up Indian-American taught me about duality; structure and emotion, ambition and sacrifice. That tension eventually became the foundation of my EP Online/irl. You began learning piano at seven and are a third-generation Bharatanatyam dancer. How did those early artistic experiences shape your relationship with music and storytelling?

Bharatanatyam was my first experience of embodied storytelling. It taught me how to immerse myself fully; mind, body, and soul. It’s often described as the highest form of yoga because it requires spiritual connection, physical discipline, and narrative precision. That depth is

something I carry into my music. Piano gave me structure. It trained my ear for nuance; harmony, tension, restraint. The intro to Spiraling somehow ended up mirroring my emotional relationship with that instrument. Piano allows space. It lets silence speak. Without that early training, I don’t think I would approach music with the same sensitivity.

Together, Bharatanatyam and piano shaped how I understand rhythm, storytelling, and emotional layering, all of which are central to Online/irl. Before music, you built a significant presence in the fashion world and on social media. What initially drew you to fashion as a form of expression?

Fashion became my outlet when structured extracurriculars during my childhood and teens (dance, piano, Girl Scouts) ended. In college, I finally allowed myself to explore something I had always been curious about. As

“My playlists move from Bollywood dance tracks to Ariana Grande to rap to classical ragas.” - Malvika

a child, I had this random but wild dream of becoming the next Anna Wintour. She’s somehow still on my vision board. Perhaps because she dictates culture.

While studying entrepreneurship and marketing, I did a case study on fashion influencers. A friend, who at the time had a poetry blog, encouraged me to stop analyzing and start creating. I began documenting my outfits online, writing about fashion, and emailing PR teams to attend New York Fashion Week while I was still in college in Massachusetts. By sophomore year, global brands were reaching out for partnerships. Fashion became my first independent form of authorship.

Today, fashion and music are different fonts of the same language. Online/irl isn’t just sonic, it’s visual. Each track has an aesthetic vocabulary. Fashion isn’t an accessory; it’s narrative architecture.

Your style blends cultural elements with contemporary fashion. Was that a conscious way of representing your heritage? Initially, it wasn’t strategic, it was instinctual. I would wear my grandmother’s jewelry, borrow from my parents’ closets, experiment with what I had. Over time, integrating Indian elements into Western silhouettes became both natural and intentional.

Now, I enjoy the challenge of making pieces coexist, jasmine with dresses, heritage jewelry with baggy clothes. Fashion shouldn’t always make immediate sense. It should invite a second look.

That philosophy is embedded in Online/irl. Integration over separation. Your music blends electro-pop and R&B with Indian instruments like the tabla and veena. Why was it important for you to incorporate these elements? Because it’s honest.

My playlists move from Bollywood dance tracks to Ariana Grande to rap to classical ragas. That hybridity is not a strategy, it’s my lived experience. When Indian classical elements appear in Online/irl, they are contextual, not decorative. The intro track leans into duality intentionally. In Love Is a Game, longing influences tonal choices. These decisions, with massive credit to my collaborators who understood & translated my vision, are grounded in personal story. My background in classical dance gives me a unique rhythmic vocabulary. It’s not about adding Indian instruments just so we can “represent,” it’s about translating identity into sound.

ROAR Honors Indian Heritage with Grand Gangaur Cultural Celebration in NJ

EDISON, NJ -The Rajasthani Organization of American Residents (ROAR) celebrated its annual Gangaur Festival with great enthusiasm, joy, and cultural pride on March 14, 2026, in Edison, New Jersey. The vibrant event brought together families from across the community to honor one of Rajasthan’s most cherished festivals through traditional rituals, cultural performances, and strong community engagement.

Gangaur is an important Hindu festival primarily celebrated in Rajasthan, India, in devotion to Goddess Gauri (Parvati) and Lord Shiva. The festival symbolizes marital happiness, devotion, prosperity, and the sacred bond between husband and wife. The name “Gangaur” is derived from “Gan,” referring to Lord Shiva, and “Gaur,” referring to Goddess Gauri. Traditionally, women observe fasts, perform rituals, worship idols of Shiva and Parvati, and participate in festive processions and social gatherings during the celebration.

The program began in authentic Rajasthani tradition with the Gangaur Pooja conducted by women members of ROAR. The ritual ceremony lasted for over an hour and a half and followed traditional customs. In line with the organization’s commitment to environmental responsibility, ecofriendly clay idols of Shiva and Parvati were used. These idols were handcrafted locally in the United States by ROAR President Mrs. Tarang Soni especially for the occasion.

The event showcased the vibrant cultural identity of Rajasthan through traditional attire. Women and girls wore colorful Ghaghara Cholis and Lehengas, while men and boys appeared in kurtapyjamas, sherwanis, Jodhpuri suits, and traditional Rajasthani pagdis, adding to

the festive and authentic atmosphere. Following the pooja, a cultural program featured energetic performances by ROAR members across all age groups. Participants presented traditional Rajasthani folk dances set to regional music, highlighting the rich artistic heritage of Rajasthan.

One of the key highlights of the celebration was the Gangaur Mata Bindora, a traditional ceremonial procession. Women carried Gangaur Mata idols and water kalash on their

heads while participants danced joyfully throughout the procession. Community members walked nearly a mile as part of the traditional farewell ritual. The ceremony concluded with the immersion of eco-friendly idols of Ishar (Shiva) and Gangaur (Parvati) in water, symbolizing devotion and the promise to welcome the Goddess again the following year.

The celebration also featured an extensive spread of authentic homemade Rajasthani cuisine prepared by ROAR

members. Traditional delicacies included Mirch ke Pakode, Daal ki Pakodiya, Kachori with Aloo ki Sabji, Daal Baati Churma, Aloo Baati, Gatte ki Sabji, Dahi Bade, Chole Poori, Kanji, Thandai, Raabadi, Ladoos, Pedas, and several other regional specialties.

Additional cultural activities followed the procession, including a children’s fashion show titled “Tiny Tots of Rajasthan,” couple performances, group dances by ROAR ladies and men, and an open dance floor that encouraged enthusiastic community participation. The younger generation group, Youth of Rajasthan (YOR), represented by Atharva Soni, Mati Rajvanshi, and Jeeval Paliwal, also shared their vision and future initiatives. They announced a commitment to raise $5,000 to provide educational materials for underprivileged students in Rajasthan and to develop an online educational portal for children aged 9 to 16.

ROAR also marked International Women’s Day during the event by recognizing the achievements of Mrs. Rajasthan International 2025 Payal Sharma, Miss Rajasthan International 2025 Jeeval Paliwal, and Teen Rajasthan International 2025 Mati Rajvanshi. The organization further honored all women members for their valuable contributions to the community.

ROAR President Mrs. Tarang Soni concluded the program by expressing gratitude to all members, volunteers, organizing and cultural committees, photography and videography teams, and program hosts for their dedication in making the celebration successful. The event reflected ROAR’s continued commitment to preserving Rajasthani heritage, strengthening community bonds, and inspiring the younger generation to remain connected to their cultural roots.

Indian Students Appreciated During US Senate Hearing

WASHINGTON, DC -Indian students studying in the United States were praised during a Senate hearing on March 12 that examined foreign influence in American universities. While lawmakers raised concerns about China’s research partnerships and funding ties with US campuses, Indian students were noted as not posing security risks.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing titled “Transparency and Trust: Exposing Malign Foreign Influence in Higher Education.”

Lawmakers discussed how foreign funding, research collaboration, and academic partnerships could impact US national security.

During the hearing, Peter Wood, President of the National Association of Scholars, highlighted the positive perception of Indian students in the US. He noted that India currently represents the largest group of international students in the country and said there have been no known security concerns linked to them.

“The largest percentage of international students studying in the United States comes from India,” Wood stated. “To my knowledge, no one has raised questions that Indian students pose a security risk.”

Much of the hearing focused on concerns surrounding China’s

influence in US higher education.

Committee Chairman Senator Bill Cassidy emphasized that American

universities are vital national assets but warned that their openness can make them vulnerable to foreign exploitation. Cassidy also pointed to the growing scale of foreign funding entering US campuses. He said universities reported receiving $9.7 billion in foreign gifts and contracts last year, adding that this figure may not represent the full extent of foreign financial involvement.

Craig Singleton, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, warned that foreign governments often view American universities as strategic targets due to their leadership in global research and innovation. According to federal data cited during

UCLA Indian-American Student Uses Origami to Highlight Kidney Health Awareness

CERRITOS, CA – At the Cerritos Public Library this month, visitors are encountering a unique intersection of art, science, and public health. The exhibition, “Fold for Life,” curated by UCLA student Sohum Bhargava, transforms a display space into both gallery and classroom. Featuring delicate paper cranes, geometric structures, and intricate origami forms, the exhibit runs through March 31 in observance of Kidney Awareness Month.

Bhargava’s work explores an unexpected connection between origami and human biology. He was inspired by learning that three sets of kidneys form during early development, with the first two existing only briefly before permanent kidneys emerge. While practicing origami, he noticed a parallel: the many folds that shape a finished model often disappear from view, yet they remain essential to the structure. Similarly, early stages of organ development are hidden but vital. This insight led Bhargava to consider whether the principles of folding could help scientists better understand how organs form. Researchers are already growing miniature kidney

organoids from stem cells, and he believes that studying natural folding patterns may one day support breakthroughs in organ research and transplantation.

Beyond science, the exhibition aims to raise awareness about kidney disease, which affects more than 37 million Americans and often progresses silently. Through art-driven messaging, Bhargava hopes to encourage open conversations about kidney health within families and communities.

A highlight of the exhibit is a large modular origami sculpture created with patients and caregivers from UCLA’s Connie Frank Kidney Transplant Center. Each participant folded individual pieces that were later assembled into a single structure symbolizing shared resilience and support. Educational posters, wearable art inspired by kidney motifs, and clear explanations of risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension further enrich the display.

Ultimately, “Fold for Life” invites visitors to see health education through a creative lens—promoting awareness, early testing, and healthier futures.

the hearing, China has contributed approximately $6.8 billion in gifts and contracts to US universities over time.

Singleton also noted that government records indicate nearly $400 million in transactions involving entities listed on US government watchlists or restricted lists. These entities have been linked to export control violations, national security risks, and China’s military-civil fusion program. Several senators stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between safeguarding sensitive research and keeping US universities open to international talent. Senator Tim Kaine highlighted the economic contributions of international students and raised the question of how the US can protect national security while continuing to attract the world’s brightest minds.

Robert Daley of the Asia Society said cooperation between universities and government agencies has improved oversight in recent years. He noted that institutions are increasingly investing resources to address national security concerns related to foreign partnerships.

Lawmakers are now considering measures to strengthen disclosure requirements for foreign funding under Section 117 of the Higher Education Act, aiming to improve transparency and accountability in higher education.

FBI Offers Record $1 Million Reward to Track Down Most Wanted Bhadreshkumar Patel

BALTIMORE, MD—The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of fugitive Bhadreshkumar Chetanbhai Patel.

Authorities are now offering up to $1 million, aligning with the standard reward amount for individuals listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. The previous reward stood at $250,000.

Patel is wanted in connection with the violent murder of his wife, 21-yearold Palak Patel, which occurred on April 12, 2015. Law enforcement officials warn that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. According to investigators, the crime took place at a donut shop located at 7567 Arundel Mills Boulevard in Hanover, Maryland, where both Patel and his wife worked the night shift.

Authorities believe Patel attacked his wife in a back room of the shop shortly before midnight, allegedly stabbing her multiple times before fleeing the scene. After leaving the workplace, he reportedly walked to the nearby apartment he shared with his wife, collected a few personal

items and cash, and then hailed a taxi.

The driver transported him to a hotel in New Jersey near Newark Liberty International Airport. Patel checked in around 3 a.m. with no luggage and checked out approximately seven hours later. He then took a hotel shuttle to Newark Penn Station, marking his last confirmed sighting.

Patel was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on April 18, 2017, becoming the 514th individual on the list. Since the program’s creation in 1950, it has relied heavily on public awareness and citizen tips to help capture dangerous fugitives. Anyone with information about Patel’s

the historic conclusion of a twodecade pursuit of justice, following the first extradition of an individual from India to the United States since 2017.

The 54-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a fatal high-speed crash that occurred on Long Island in 2005. Shenoy had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on February 6, finally taking responsibility for an incident that devastated a local family before he fled the country.

The tragedy unfolded on April 11, 2005, in Hicksville. Prosecutors stated that Shenoy was driving at nearly twice the speed limit when he ran a red light at the intersection of Levittown Parkway and Old Country Road. His vehicle slammed into a car driven by 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo with such force that Mastropolo’s vehicle was pushed into a stopped Freightliner box truck. First responders pronounced Mastropolo dead at the scene.

Political Firestorm Erupts After GOP Lawmaker Shares Anti-Muslim Message

WASHINGTON, DC – A sharp political firestorm has erupted in Washington after Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles made inflammatory remarks on social media, stating that “Muslims don’t belong in American society” and that “pluralism is a lie.”

The Republican lawmaker’s comments came in the wake of reports about an attempted terrorist attack in New York City, in which suspects allegedly linked to ISIS were involved. Explosives were reportedly thrown at the home of Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The remarks triggered swift and widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. Representative Ami Bera (D-CA) called for a bipartisan rejection of what he described as “vile and un-American” rhetoric. He stressed that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, “including for our Muslim neighbors, friends, and fellow Americans,” and urged Republican colleagues to denounce what he called “pure and unbridled bigotry.”

Representative Shri Thanedar (D-MI) issued a pointed historical rebuttal,

He highlighted that Muslims have been part of American society since the 1600s and referenced “E Pluribus Unum,” the country’s traditional motto since 1782, as a symbol of enduring pluralism. Cultural Landmark for Marathi Community

FREMONT, CA –In kitchens across the United States, where the aroma of poha and chai blends with the chatter of children switching effortlessly between English and Marathi, a quiet cultural movement has been steadily growing. Today, that effort has found a new digital home — one that combines community pride, cultural preservation, and entrepreneurial spirit.

The Fremont-based organization Marathi Aai Initiative (MAI) has launched its first national merchandise platform, The MAI Store, aimed at supporting Marathi language and cultural programs for families nationwide. Built on Shopify, the platform allows supporters across the country to purchase MAI-branded merchandise, with plans to introduce more products in future phases. The concept is both simple and impactful: every purchase contributes to sustaining activities that help keep Marathi language and traditions alive for a new generation growing up far from Maharashtra. MAI currently supports families navigating the balance of raising children connected to both American and Marathi cultural identities.

“We are building sustainability from within our own community,” Joshi said. “Our goal is to establish a recurring revenue stream that strengthens cultural and language initiatives for more than 1,500 families nationwide.”

Community member Neha Joshi spearheaded the development of the store. The idea emerged from internal discussions about creating a dependable, long-term funding model as MAI’s programs continue to expand.

Volunteers — many of them working mothers — played a key role in bringing the project to life. Co-founder Dr. Sayli Natu emphasized that their leadership and dedication are central to MAI’s success.

Organizers envision the store evolving into a broader national marketplace showcasing products from Marathiowned small and mid-sized businesses, celebrating identity, creativity, and community.

may be Ogles’ values — not those of Muslim Americans — that are out of step with American society.

Other Democratic leaders also weighed in. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Ogles in strong terms, while Congressman Suhas Subramanyam responded by sharing images of himself celebrating iftar with Muslim communities in Virginia. He emphasized that “Muslims — and people of all faiths — belong in America. Hate does not.”

Calls for bipartisan condemnation were echoed by voices within Republican circles as well. Richard Grenell, serving as a special envoy for former President Donald Trump and interim president of the Kennedy Center, publicly urged Ogles to “stop attacking the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

responsible for Kaur’s death, they were divided over whether the attack had been planned. This division led to a conviction for second-degree murder rather than first-degree murder.

The fatal incident occurred on April 25, 2022, at a residence shared by Singh, his wife, and the victim. Authorities said the confrontation began inside the home and continued outside, where neighbors witnessed parts of the assault.

Prosecutors stated that Singh used an eight-inch kitchen knife to stab Kaur 37 times. During the altercation, he also pushed his wife, resulting in the misdemeanor charge.

Controversial Statue Targeting Trump–Epstein Link Appears With Protest Banners

WASHINGTON, DC – A provocative new art installation appeared on the National Mall near the U.S. Capitol on March 10, depicting President Donald Trump and the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a pose reminiscent of the iconic scene from the film Titanic.

The large-scale sculpture, titled “King of the World” by the anonymous activist collective Secret Handshake, shows the two men recreating the famous moment at the ship’s prow. A plaque beneath the statue reads:

“The tragic love story between Jack and Rose was built on luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secret nude sketches. This monument honors the bond between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, a friendship seemingly built on luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secret nude sketches.” Bystanders were seen photographing the installation, which stood against a backdrop of banners featuring images of the pair alongside the slogan “Make America Safe Again,” a play on Trump’s well-known campaign messaging. The display marks the latest attempt by Secret Handshake to use public

Fake Cosmetic Injectables Stopped at Indianapolis Airport by CBP

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the express consignment facility in Indianapolis recently seized six shipments containing illegal cosmetic injectables valued at more than $30,000. The seized items included 450 units of Botox, six boxes of Maxy Fill body filler injectables, and five additional counterfeit Onabotulinumtoxin cosmetic treatment products. The shipments originated from South Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines and were destined for residences in New York, Maryland, Tennessee, Illinois, and Kentucky. None of the packages included the required licenses, permits, prescriptions, or authorizations for importation. After examination by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the products were found to be misbranded consumer goods imported by unauthorized agents, in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Cosmetic injectables can be used safely to treat medical and aesthetic concerns, such as reducing facial wrinkles, when administered by trained and licensed medical professionals. However, counterfeit or unapproved products may contain unknown or harmful ingredients that pose serious health risks. Indianapolis Port Director Brett Mueller emphasized that purchasing unapproved cosmetic fillers is dangerous, noting that lower prices often come at the cost of safety and quality. CBP continues to work closely with the FDA to intercept illegal medications and cosmetic products that threaten public health. Consumers are strongly advised to buy cosmetic products only from reputable sources and ensure treatments are performed by qualified professionals. CBP also encourages online shoppers to verify that imported products meet all federal and state regulations before purchasing.

though officials moved quickly to remove it. Their previous works have included a statue made to resemble human waste aimed at January 6 rioters and a replica of a birthday letter allegedly sent from Trump to Epstein. The artwork’s appearance comes amid renewed public attention on Trump’s past association with Epstein. Since the Epstein Files Transparency Act was signed into law last November, the Department of Justice has released batches of documents referencing several high-profile figures, including the 79-year-old president. Some FBI memoranda reference an allegation of sexual assault involving Trump.

Democratic lawmakers have called for Trump to testify, arguing that holding the office of president does not provide immunity from congressional scrutiny. They have pointed out that former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have previously testified in investigations. Requests for public hearings, however, were rejected by Republican members of Congress.

is widely known for her pioneering research demonstrating the clinical and economic value of medical nutrition therapy (MNT). Her studies showed that every dollar spent on MNT can result in savings of three to four dollars in health care costs for patients with dyslipidemia. Published in 1998 and 2000, her research marked the first costbenefit analysis to quantify the financial impact of dietitians on patient outcomes. At the time, Sikand worked as chief lipid research dietitian at the teaching hospital affiliated with UC Irvine and the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Her findings proved especially significant as managed care models expanded, requiring strong outcomes data to validate dietitian-led interventions. Her work earned her two Mary Huddleson Awards from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. Beyond research, Sikand has led advocacy efforts supporting the Expanded Medical Nutrition Therapy Act and continues to educate both clinicians and the public on the importance of nutrition counseling. She emphasizes a patient-centered approach, partnering with individuals to understand lifestyle behaviors and improve long-term health outcomes.

Rumors Rising. Facts Missing. Cities Prepare for ICE

HiIndia Newsdesk COLUMBUS, OH - Federal immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis have triggered widespread concern in cities across the United States, as officials and immigrant communities brace for the possibility of similar crackdowns. The operation in Minnesota, which unfolded over several weeks in December and January, was marked by chaotic scenes, including clashes between Border Patrol agents and residents after officers crashed into a vehicle in south Minneapolis. The situation intensified after two U.S. citizens were killed during enforcement actions, leading to leadership changes within the Department of Homeland Security and signaling a shift in tactics nationwide.

Despite these developments, uncertainty continues to fuel anxiety in cities such as Columbus, Ohio; Philadelphia; and several jurisdictions in Maryland. Local leaders and activists have been preparing for potential large-scale enforcement operations by organizing support networks, monitoring federal activities, and proposing new policies. Some measures under consideration include restricting the use of masks or unmarked vehicles by immigration agents, offering pro bono legal assistance to affected residents, and making it easier for families to recover property after arrests. State officials are also exploring ways to block the opening of new immigration detention facilities. Community groups are working to strike a delicate balance between preparedness and fear.
