US Estimates Iran War Cost at $11 Billion in Six Days
In Washington, officials from the administration of Donald Trump told senators in a closed-door briefing that the first six days of the war against Iran have cost the United States at least $11.3 billion. The estimate, first reported by The New York Times, does not reflect the total cost of the conflict but was shared as lawmakers pressed for more transparency.
The military campaign began on February 28 with joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes and has since expanded into Lebanon, killing around 2,000 people and disrupting global energy markets. Officials told Congress that $5.6 billion worth of munitions were used in just the first two days of strikes.
Several congressional aides expect the White House to soon request additional war funding, with projections ranging up to $50 billion, though some believe that may be insufficient. The administration has not publicly detailed the full financial impact or timeline of the conflict. Concerns are growing in Congress that the war could strain U.S. weapons
stockpiles. Trump recently met defense contractors as the Pentagon works to replenish supplies, while Democratic lawmakers have demanded sworn public testimony about the war’s objectives and duration.
Republican leaders have largely backed the administration’s actions, arguing that confronting Iran is necessary to protect U.S. interests and regional allies. However, some lawmakers from both parties have questioned whether Congress was adequately consulted before the escalation and warned about the long-term fiscal burden.
With global oil prices fluctuating and financial markets reacting to the instability, analysts say the broader economic impact could far exceed direct military spending. As debates intensify on Capitol Hill, the coming weeks are expected to determine both the scale of U.S. involvement and the ultimate cost of the conflict.
Lawmakers seek clarity as White House weighs up to $50 billion more in funding amid stockpile concerns.
FBI Warns Iran May Plan Drone Attacks on California
WASHINGTON: The FBI warned law enforcement agencies last month of the possibility that Tehran might try to retaliate for any U.S. strikes on Iran by launching surprise drone attacks in California, according to a security bulletin seen by Reuters. The confidential alert, issued by the FBI through the multi-agency Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center, surfaced publicly on Wednesday as the war that began on February 28 with massive U.S. and Israeli bombardments of Iran stretched into its 12th day.
US Strike May Have Hit Iran Girls’ School: Sources
WASHINGTON: A strike on an Iranian girls' school that killed scores of children may be the result of U.S. use of outdated targeting data, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday, providing new details about what would rank among the worst cases of civilian casualties in decades of U.S. conflicts. Reuters first reported on Thursday that an ongoing, internal U.S. military investigation showed U.S. forces were likely responsible for the strike on the girls' school in Minab.
How Trump’s Iran War Could Hand Putin a Strategic Windfall
As the United States intensifies its war against Iran, analysts warn that Vladimir Putin may be emerging as an unexpected beneficiary. President Donald Trump has insisted the campaign is under control, but soaring oil prices and reports of Russian assistance to Tehran suggest the crisis could strengthen Moscow’s hand. Energy markets have surged amid instability in the Strait of Hormuz, boosting crude prices — a development that directly benefits Russia’s war economy. Higher oil revenues could help fund Moscow’s campaign in Ukraine at a time when Western sanctions were designed to constrain it. Treasury officials have even signaled potential easing of restrictions on Russian oil to stabilize markets, a move critics say could undercut pressure on the Kremlin. Meanwhile, US intelligence assessments cited by media reports indicate Russia may be sharing drone tactics with Iran, drawing on battlefield experience from Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed Moscow is aiding Tehran not only with drone expertise but also missile and air defense support. If confirmed, such cooperation would mark a deepening alignment among anti-US powers.
Rising oil prices, shifting sanctions and deepening Russia-Iran ties risk turning a Middle East conflict into a geopolitical gain for Moscow.
The geopolitical calculus is complex. Putin’s primary objective remains securing gains in Ukraine while prolonging negotiations that stall Western unity. A distracted United States — militarily and politically absorbed in the Middle East — could reduce support for Kyiv and widen cracks within NATO. European allies are already wary of escalation with Iran, and diverging strategies may further strain transatlantic cohesion.
At the same time, Russia must tread carefully to avoid direct confrontation with Washington. Open military involvement on Iran’s behalf would risk severe retaliation. Instead, Moscow appears to be leveraging indirect influence — benefiting from oil volatility and strategic distraction without overt escalation. For Trump, the danger lies in unintended consequences. If the Iran conflict drags on, drains US resources and inflates global energy prices, Putin may gain financially and strategically without firing a shot at American forces. What began as a show of strength in the Gulf could inadvertently reshape the balance of power in Eastern Europe — delivering Moscow a geopolitical “lottery win” at Washington’s expense.

UK watchdogs press Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube to block children
London: Britain’s media regulator Ofcom and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) have warned major social media companies to strengthen measures preventing children from accessing their platforms, saying firms are failing to enforce minimum age requirements.
The warning comes as the UK government considers tougher restrictions on under-16s using social media, similar to steps taken by Australia. Regulators said they are increasingly concerned about algorithm-driven feeds that can expose children to harmful or addictive content. Under the latest phase of Britain’s Online Safety Act, Ofcom has ordered Meta Platforms (owner of Facebook and Instagram), Roblox Corporation, Snap Inc. (Snapchat), ByteDance (TikTok), and Alphabet Inc. (YouTube) to explain by April 30 how they will improve age
verification, prevent strangers from contacting minors, make content feeds safer, and stop testing new features on children.
Separately, the ICO urged the same companies to adopt “modern, viable” age-assurance technologies to block under-13s from services not intended for them. Regulators stressed there is
no excuse for inaction given available technology.
Ofcom can fine companies up to 10% of global revenue, while the ICO can impose penalties of up to 4% of annual worldwide turnover. Last month, the ICO fined Reddit £14.5 million for inadequate age checks and unlawful processing of children’s data.
Oil Tankers Burn Near Iraq as Iranian Strikes Challenge Trump’s ‘Victory’ Claim
Dubai/Tel Aviv/Washington: Iran set fire to two fuel tankers in Iraqi waters and intensified strikes on oil and transport infrastructure across the Middle East, escalating a conflict that has already rattled global energy markets. The attacks come despite Donald Trump claiming the United States had “won” the war following joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran nearly two weeks ago.
The conflict has killed around 2,000 people and spread across the region, disrupting shipping and prompting plans for a record release of strategic oil reserves to curb soaring fuel prices.
UNICEF said more than 1,100 children have been killed or injured. Oil prices, which surged close to $120 a barrel earlier in the week before easing to about $90, climbed nearly 5% again amid fears of supply disruption. Global
British Police Ban ProIran March in London
Over ‘Extreme Tensions’
LONDON: British police have banned a pro-Iranian march that had been due to take place in London on Sunday, citing the possibility of "extreme tensions" with counter-protesters and the risk posed by Tehran during the Iran war. The annual Al Quds march is organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), which police said was supportive of Iran's clerical rulers. The threshold to ban a protest is high in Britain. The police said it was the first time the power had been invoked in 14 years but described the risk of public disorder as "severe". The ban, which required the approval of interior minister Shabana Mahmood, also applies to any counter-protest marches.
stock markets fell, with declines on Wall Street spilling into Asia. Iran signaled it aims to prolong economic pressure. A military spokesperson warned oil could hit $200 a barrel, blaming regional instability on U.S.
actions. Maritime security sources said explosive-laden boats attacked the tankers in Iraqi waters, killing one crew member, while projectiles struck three merchant vessels in the Gulf. Iran also targeted fuel storage tanks at a facility in Bahrain’s Muharraq, authorities said.
China, North Korea Set to Restart Passenger Trains After Pandemic Halt
Passenger trains between China and North Korea will resume service on Thursday, reviving a transport link that was shuttered for six years due to the pandemic, China's rail operator said.
Trains between Beijing and Pyongyang will operate four times a week, while the service between the Chinese border city of Dandong and the North Korean
Iranian Footballers Escape Australian Hotel to Seek Asylum
The first hint something was up, was when we spotted a small group of Iranian footballers in the hotel lobby. We counted at least three players, wearing black headscarves and dressed in the team's grey shirts, chatting with four people we suspected at the time - and now know - were Iranians from the local community here on Australia's Gold Coast. What stood out at the time was the ease with which they were talking together. They were casual, smiley, sometimes laughing. They looked comfortable. How was this possible? Much had been said about the 26-member squad being watched, not given access to the internet, unable to talk to anyone outside their group. So that was our biggest question mark. Where was their minder?
Pakistan Sends Navy Escort to Middle East
Amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, Pakistan has deployed naval escorts to protect its commercial vessels operating in the Middle East, aiming to ensure the safety of maritime trade routes and safeguard national shipping interests. The move comes as security concerns grow over potential disruptions in key waterways, prompting authorities to strengthen naval presence and provide direct protection to Pakistani-flagged ships passing through sensitive areas.

Iran Drone Hits US Oil Tanker, 1 Dead
One person died in the attacks that came after Iran said it would "set fire" to any ships trying to pass through the Strait through which about 20 per cent of the world's oil usually passes.
Tehran: At least one person died, and 38 crew members were rescued after two foreign oil tankers were left ablaze in the Persian Gulf after coming under attack in Iraq's territorial waters. Iran has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying an underwater drone attack "blew up two oil tankers in the Persian Gulf", according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. The ships that were attacked were the Maltese-flagged Zefyros and the Marshallese-flagged Safesea Vishnu. Safesea Vishnu is owned by the US-based company Safesea Transport Inc., while Zefyros' owner is based in Greece. Earlier, a CNN report claimed that a 'suicide' Iranian boat, rigged with explosives, could have hit the two vessels, and an investigation is ongoing.
Farooq Abdullah Survives Point-Blank Assassination Bid
Srinagar/Jammu: J&K National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, who was attending a marriage ceremony on Wednesday evening, survived an "assassination attempt" in Jammu after an attacker tried to shoot him at pointblank range.
The attacker was just a few steps behind the J&K leader, his arm in line with his shoulder, did fire a gun shot, but the National Security Guard (NDG) commandos pushed him. The shot missed the target and Abdullah had a narrow escape, showed a dramatic video.
The attacker, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, was immediately taken into custody. Videos from the scene showed people thrashing him soon after he was caught. After his arrest, the attacker is seen sitting on a chair, telling police he's a resident of Puranas Mandi in Jammu. The 65-year-old attacker appeared to have no remorse and has reportedly said that he was waiting for this moment for last 20 years.
Iran Clears Indian Ships Through Hormuz Amid Rising Gulf War Tensions
Iran has allowed two India-flagged oil tankers, Pushpak and Parimal, to transit safely through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, despite ongoing conflict in the region that has disrupted maritime traffic and raised global energy security concerns. This development follows diplomatic engagements at the foreign-minister level, with sources saying the move aimed to keep a vital shipping route open for crude oil and gas exports amid the wider Iran–US–Israel war escalation.
While many Western-flagged vessels continue to face restrictions and threats in the strait, the passage for these Indian tankers reflects cautious coordination to maintain some level of commercial flow.
The Strait of Hormuz remains highly volatile: other ships, including a Thaiflagged cargo vessel, were attacked
Iran’s decision to permit the Indian tankers Pushpak and Parimal to cross the Strait of Hormuz signals strategic coordination amid war-driven instability. The move helps safeguard a crucial energy corridor despite escalating regional conflict.

India, China Among 16 Nations Targeted in Trump’s ‘301’ Tariff Probes
The investigation could lead to new tariffs imposed against China, the European Union, India, Japan, South Korea and Mexico by this summer, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said.
In Washington, the administration of Donald Trump has launched new “Section 301” investigations into 16 major trading partners, including India, China and Bangladesh, aiming to restore tariff pressure after earlier duties were struck down by the US Supreme Court. The probes, conducted under the Trade Act of 1974, could lead to fresh tariffs by summer on economies such as the European Union, Japan, South Korea and Mexico. US Trade Representative Jamieson
Greer said the investigations target countries showing “structural excess capacity” and persistent trade surpluses. Separately, Washington is opening another Section 301 probe to curb imports made with forced labour, potentially expanding restrictions beyond China’s Xinjiang region. The administration hopes to conclude the investigations before temporary tariffs imposed earlier this year expire in July, reinforcing its push to reduce trade deficits and protect US manufacturing.
Attacks on other vessels and warnings from Iran’s IRGC highlight the continuing risks in the waterway. With ships stranded and markets on edge, nations are weighing stronger naval protection to secure vital sea routes.
that vessels must obtain approval before transiting, or risk being targeted, underscoring the dangers to commercial shipping in the area. Many Indian-flagged merchant vessels remain stuck near the strait due to security fears, prompting discussions at New Delhi about possible naval escorts to protect its shipping interests. These developments come as global oil markets react sharply to conflictrelated disruptions, and nations grapple with how to secure crucial sea lanes while avoiding further escalation.
Trump Backs Israeli Strike Threat on Mojtaba: Report
US President Donald Trump has said that he would support the assassination of Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei if he does not cooperate with US demands, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The demands largely include Iran giving up its nuclear weapons programme, with Trump ready to eliminate the newly appointed leader if he refuses. US officials said the operation would likely be led by Israeli forces, similar to the one that killed his father on February 28.
Sweet Talk, Stolen Gold: Chain-Snatching Gangs
Target Indians in US Parking Lots
A disturbing trend of distraction thefts is resurfacing across the United States, with Indian-origin shoppers increasingly targeted outside grocery stores and transit hubs. In the latest case near Chicago, a customer at Patel Brothers in Naperville was approached in the parking lot by occupants of a car offering to donate necklaces to a church. As the victim showed interest, a woman stepped out and hugged him—swiftly removing his gold chain without his knowledge. The theft was discovered only later. Police say such gangs operate politely and in teams, often offering fake “gifts” like gold-colored rings, necklaces, iPhones or AirPods to gain trust. Some even use children to distract victims. Authorities in the Chicago region have previously
warned residents about similar schemes.
Comparable incidents have surfaced in New Jersey and New York, where elderly victims were targeted in public spaces. In one case, a woman realized mid-incident and raised an
alarm; in another, a victim was briefly incapacitated and robbed. Police urge shoppers—especially seniors—to keep distance from strangers, refuse unsolicited gifts, and remain alert in parking lots.

Chicago Immigrants Deported Before Court
Review
Hundreds Allegedly Arrested Without Warrants Sent Out of US Before Review
Hundreds of immigrants detained in Chicago as part of a mass deportation drive were allegedly deported before courts could review their cases, despite later admissions that many arrests were made without warrants.
The detentions took place under “Operation Midway Blitz,” launched in 2025, during which more than 5,000 undocumented immigrants were taken into custody. Legal challenges later revealed that a significant number had been arrested without proper warrants.
In January 2026, the federal government reportedly acknowledged wrongful arrests in court. A judge subsequently ordered authorities to provide records and conduct bond hearings for those detained without warrants. However, court filings now indicate that at least 70 individuals signed voluntary departure forms and were deported before receiving relief.
Attorneys from the National Immigrant Justice Center argue that many detainees were eligible for release but remained jailed due to incomplete records provided by authorities. Since November 2025, only about 100 individuals have been released, with 14 more freed last week.
Canada’s LNG Deal for India
New Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney positioned his country as an "energy superpower" that is well-positioned to meet India's energy demand, which is projected to double by 2040. In a video shared on Wednesday, where he is seen delivering a statement alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Carney said Canada supplies the world's lowest-carbon, reliably produced Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), used widely across Asia and Europe for heating, power and industrial use.
Oil Still Stuck In Strait Of Hormuz
US' Claim, Iran's Refusal And A U-Turn
"I can confirm that the US Navy has not escorted a tanker or a vessel at this time, though, of course, that's an option," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Chris Wright briefly claimed that the US Navy had escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz to protect global energy supplies. The post, shared on X, was deleted within minutes — but not before triggering sharp volatility in oil markets.
As traders reacted, oil prices fell rapidly. The White House quickly clarified that no such naval escort had taken place. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that while escorting vessels remains an option, no tanker had been accompanied through the critical waterway. An Energy Department spokesperson later said the deleted post had been incorrectly captioned by staff.
India Sends Diesel to Bangladesh as Shortages Hit Amid Iran War
Bangladesh has been reeling from a shortage of petrol and diesel due to disruptions in oil supplies following the war in Iran.
Amid improving bilateral ties, India has supplied 5,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh as Dhaka faces a severe fuel shortage triggered by disruptions linked to the Iran war. The shipment
is part of an annual agreement under which India provides 180,000 tonnes of diesel via the India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline.
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation chairman Muhammad Rezanur Rahman confirmed the delivery, stating that at least 90,000 tonnes are scheduled for import within six months. Dhaka has also requested additional supplies, though New Delhi said any extra fuel will depend on availability and market conditions.
The diesel is supplied commercially from Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam.
The crisis follows escalating tensions in the Middle East, with threats to disrupt shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, intensifying energy uncertainty across the region.
The Strait of Hormuz handles about 20% of global oil shipments, making it one of the world’s most vital energy chokepoints. Since the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, commercial traffic through the passage has slowed dramatically, with shipowners wary of security risks. Several tankers have reportedly faced strikes or threats in recent weeks.
Oil prices have swung wildly amid the uncertainty, at one point surging nearly 30% before retreating. While Donald Trump has sought to reassure markets, disruptions to Gulf exports and escalating military actions continue to fuel instability in global energy supplies.
Mojtaba Khamenei Still Missing
It's been nearly four days since Iran named Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as its next Supreme Leader, but his whereabouts and the circumstances of his elevation remain shrouded in mystery. He has not appeared before the supporters or shared a video address. He or his office has not even issued a written statement, as state media leant into archival footage to introduce him.
Indian-American Builder Accused of $85 Million Fraud in Florida
An Indian-American real estate developer has been charged in an alleged $85 million fraud case in Florida, where prosecutors say he misled investors, falsified financial records and used public funds to finance a lavish lifestyle.
Rishi Kapoor, former CEO of Location Ventures, was arrested from a hotel in Fort Lauderdale last Friday. Authorities allege he lured investors with promises of high-end development projects in Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale. However, investigators claim many of these projects never materialized beyond paperwork.
According to court documents, Kapoor faces 37 charges, including
wire fraud, money laundering, tax evasion and bank fraud. Prosecutors
allege he misrepresented his personal investment in the company, claiming $13 million while records suggest it was closer to $6.5 million. Authorities say investor funds were diverted to purchase luxury assets, including an 86-foot yacht worth $5.3 million, a $5.9 million home in Cocoplum, high-end watches and expensive jewelry. He allegedly secured large bank loans using falsified financial statements and failed to deposit payroll taxes withheld from employees. Despite earning millions, Kapoor is accused of not paying personal taxes or loan installments. Prosecutors argue he poses a flight risk due to overseas property connections. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and be ordered to repay defrauded funds.

Investors Duped, Luxury Yachts and Lavish Lifestyle Funded With Public Money
Donald Trump: US to Get New Refinery With Reliance Industries Backing
Donald Trump announced that the United States will see its first newly built oil refinery in 50 years, backed by investment from Reliance Industries. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said America First Refining will develop the facility in Brownsville, Texas, calling it a major step toward strengthening domestic energy infrastructure.
The announcement comes as the White House faces concerns over rising energy prices amid tensions linked to the Iran war. The administration is weighing measures to stabilize fuel costs, including potentially releasing crude from emergency reserves and arranging military escorts for tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Brownsville project was previously being developed by Element Fuels, which in June 2024
President Donald Trump announced the US will get its first new oil refinery in 50 years with the help of investment from India's Reliance Industries Ltd.
said it had completed site preparation and secured permits to build a refinery capable of processing about 160,000 barrels of oil per day. Element
China Curbs OpenClaw AI Use at Banks, Agencies
China has restricted the use of OpenClaw, a generative artificial intelligence platform, across banks and state-run agencies, highlighting rising concerns over data security and regulatory compliance. The move reflects Beijing’s cautious approach toward rapidly expanding AI tools operating in sensitive sectors. Financial institutions and government departments have reportedly been directed to limit or suspend the platform’s use for official tasks. Authorities are concerned that confidential financial records, internal communications and state-related data could be exposed or processed without sufficient oversight through external AI systems.
The decision aligns with China’s broader push to strengthen AI governance. Regulators have emphasized that AI platforms must adhere to strict cybersecurity, data protection and content control rules. Banks, which manage vast amounts of customer and transaction data, are considered particularly vulnerable to potential leaks or misuse. State agencies are similarly required to ensure that digital systems meet national security standards. While China continues to encourage domestic AI development, the restrictions signal tighter supervision over how advanced technologies are deployed in critical institutions, balancing innovation with security priorities.

Oil price jumps despite deal to release record amount of reserves
Oil prices continued to rise on Thursday despite major countries agreeing to release a record amount of oil from their emergency reserves as they try to curb the impact of the Iran war. In early trading in Asia, Brent crude rose by 9% to top $100 ($74.79) a barrel before prices eased to stand at around $98.80 at lunchtime.
The jump came even after all 32 members of the International Energy Agency (IEA) said they will release 400 million barrels of oil in response to supply concerns.
On Wednesday, Iran warned that oil could reach $200 a barrel as its attacks on ships intensify in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for energy shipments.
An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson said any vessel linked to the US, Israel or their allies will be targeted.
"You will not be able to artificially lower the price of oil. Expect oil at $200 per barrel," they added.
"The price of oil depends on regional security, and you are the main source of insecurity in the region." The narrow shipping route is crucial to the global economy as about a fifth of the world's energy supplies usually passes through it. IEA members represent around two thirds of global energy production and consumption.
in the second quarter of this year. America First Refining has also signed a 20-year agreement with Reliance to sell the fuels produced at the plant. Representatives for Reliance did not immediately comment, and the Energy Department referred inquiries to the White House.
The project aligns with the Trump administration’s push for “US energy dominance,” promoting expanded oil, gas and coal production. While US crude output has surged over the past decade, refining capacity has tightened due to aging facilities and recent plant closures.
The new refinery will be designed to run entirely on US shale oil.
Past attempts to build greenfield refineries in the US have struggled due to high costs, regulatory hurdles and environmental opposition.
Anthropic sues US government for calling it a risk
Artificial intelligence (AI) firm Anthropic has filed a first of its kind lawsuit against the US government over claims that it is a "supply chain risk".
The AI firm's chief executive Dario Amodei and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have been publicly rowing due to the company's refusal to allow the military unfettered use of its AI tools.
The Pentagon retaliated by making Anthropic the first US company to be labelled a "supply chain risk", but Anthropic said in its lawsuit on Monday against a list of US government agencies that the government's action was "unprecedented and unlawful".
PM warns of impact of Iran conflict on UK economy
The longer the Iran conflict lasts, the more likely it is that there will be an effect on the economy, Sir Keir Starmer has warned. Speaking at a community centre in London, the prime minister said he understood people's anxiety and that his government was "assessing the risks, monitoring and talking to our international partners" about reducing the "impact on people here". He argued that the economy was in a better place to withstand a shock to energy supply than in 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to prices soaring.

Indian Diet in America: Why Portion
Sizes Matter
For many Indian-American families, settling in the United States represents progress, stability and a better quality of life. But alongside new opportunities comes a subtle lifestyle shift that often goes unnoticed — dramatically larger portion sizes. From restaurant servings that could easily feed two people to bulk grocery packaging from warehouse stores, the American food landscape encourages eating more than traditional Indian homestyle meals typically require.
In India, meals are commonly served in modest portions — small katoris of dal and sabzi, one or two rotis, and a controlled helping of rice. In contrast, US restaurant plates often arrive heaped with rice, rich gravies, oversized naan and sugary beverages. Over time, these larger portions can quietly reset what feels “normal,” leading families to consume significantly more calories without realizing it.
Health experts warn that this shift may be contributing to rising rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease within the South Asian community in America. Research consistently shows that South Asians tend to develop metabolic conditions at lower body weights compared to other ethnic groups. This means that even individuals who appear slim or maintain a “normal” Body Mass Index (BMI) may still carry higher risks of insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides and abdominal fat.
Portion control, therefore, is not
Big Plates, Bigger Portions — and Rising Health Risks in the Desi Community
The Portion Problem
In India, meals are often served in smaller katoris with controlled servings. In America:
• Rotis are larger
• Rice portions double
• Restaurant curries serve 2–3 people
• Sugary beverages are standardsized
Many families unknowingly eat 30–40% more calories per meal compared to traditional portions.
What a Healthy Plate Should Look Like
Use the 50-25-25 rule:
• 50% vegetables (sabzi, salad)
• 25% protein (dal, beans, paneer, fish)
• 25% whole grains (1–2 rotis or small rice portion)
Avoid refilling plates automatically.
merely about preventing visible weight gain. It plays a crucial role in protecting long-term heart health and stabilizing blood sugar levels. Regularly consuming slightly more calories than the body needs — even by a few hundred per day — can gradually increase A1C levels, cholesterol and waist circumference over time.
The challenge is not abandoning traditional foods, but adapting them thoughtfully within the American environment. Simple steps such as using smaller plates, limiting rice and refined carbohydrates, sharing restaurant entrées, and increasing vegetable portions can make a meaningful difference.
As Indian-American families balance cultural traditions with modern lifestyles, being mindful of portion sizes may be one of the most powerful — and practical — tools for preserving health across generations.
Is Your ‘Healthy’ Protein Bar Actually Spiking Sugar?
Hidden sugars may be raising your blood sugar
Protein bars have become a go-to snack for busy professionals, gym enthusiasts and even seniors looking for convenient nutrition.
Marketed as “high-protein,” “low-carb,” or “diabetic-friendly,” these bars often appear to be a smart alternative to sweets or fried snacks. But are they as healthy as they claim — especially for those watching their blood sugar?
Many protein bars contain 15–25 grams of protein, which sounds impressive. However, a closer look at the ingredient list often reveals hidden sugars, sugar alcohols, syrups and highly processed carbohydrates. Some bars contain as much sugar as a chocolate bar — just under a healthier label. For people of South Asian origin, who already face a higher risk of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes, this can be particularly concerning. Even if a bar is labeled “no added sugar,” it may contain ingredients like maltitol, brown rice syrup,
tapioca syrup or dates, which can still raise blood glucose levels.
Another issue is portion perception. Because protein bars are seen as “health foods,” people may eat them frequently — sometimes daily — without accounting for the extra calories. A typical bar can range from 180 to 300 calories. Over time, this adds up, especially if combined with regular meals.
That said, not all protein bars are problematic. Some are well-balanced, with high fiber, minimal added sugars and moderate calorie content. The key lies in reading labels carefully and understanding how your body responds. Checking blood sugar one to two hours after eating a new bar can offer valuable insight.
Ultimately, whole foods such as nuts, Greek yogurt, roasted chana or boiled eggs may provide more stable energy with fewer surprises. Convenience matters — but informed choices matter more.
Trump Warns Iran Over Hormuz Strait
Tehran:
US President Donald Trump has threatened to take over the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz if Iran tries anything "cute" and attacks more American and Israeli targets in the Middle East. The warning came after oil prices briefly shot to their highest level since 2022 shortly after Iran selected Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his late father as Iran's supreme leader. Commercial shipping through the strait, through which about 20 per cent of the global oil supply flows, has effectively ground to a halt. But prices later fell, and US stocks rose on hopes that the war with Iran may not last much longer after Trump said the military action against Iran is "going to be a short-term excursion."
Sensex, Nifty Eye Recovery As Oil Prices Fall
Indian equity benchmarks may attempt recover on Tuesday, tracking a rebound in global markets and a sharp retreat in crude oil prices. However, volatility linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict is likely to keep investors cautious.
Early signals from the derivatives market also suggest a rebound.
GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,363, pointing to gains for the Nifty 50 at the open after the index closed Monday's session 1.74% lower near the 24,000 mark. The Sensex had ended nearly 1,400 points down around 77,500 after a turbulent day marked by sharp swings. A key relief for markets has come from oil. Brent crude slipped below the psychologically important $100 a barrel mark, while US West Texas Intermediate crude plunged nearly 10% after US President Donald Trump said the Iran conflict could end soon. The cooling in oil prices has eased fears of a prolonged supply shock that had rattled global financial markets.
Iran to US: We’ll Decide When War Ends
Tehran has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that the war in Iran would end “soon,” declaring that only Iran will decide when military operations cease. In a strong statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the “end of the war” and the
future balance of power in the region are now in the hands of Iranian armed forces, not Washington or its allies.
Trump told Republican lawmakers that the conflict would be a “shortterm excursion,” but warned of severe retaliation if Iran disrupts global oil

Over Children’s Deaths
The front page of Iran’s state-backed Tehran Times features portraits of children reportedly killed in a missile strike on a school in Minab, under the headline “Trump, Look Them In The Eyes.” An editorial accuses US President Donald Trump of making false claims and rejecting diplomatic solutions. Trump blamed Iran for the February 28 strike, alleging its munitions lack accuracy. However, a New York Times investigation suggested the US military was likely responsible. Footage aired by Iran’s Mehr News agency and later analysed online was geolocated to the military compound in Minab, where a school inside or adjacent to the site was struck. Neither the US nor Israel has formally claimed responsibility.

The escalating conflict has shaken global energy markets, briefly pushing oil prices to their highest levels since 2022. Nearly 20% of the world’s crude oil passes through Hormuz, and several vessels have reportedly come under attack, raising fears of broader economic disruption worldwide.
Diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation, but tensions remain high as global shipping firms suspend operations and regional powers monitor the situation closely.
LPG Shortage Hits Hotels in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai
New Delhi: Hotel and restaurant industry bodies in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai have flagged the shortage of commercial cooking gas cylinders due to supply disruptions amid the war in the Middle East, with the Centre ordering oil refineries to increase LPG production. The price of LPG cylinders was also increased last Saturday due to the Iran-Israel-US war and the disruption it caused in key energy shipping routes in the Middle East. The rates of household cooking gas were raised by Rs 60 and commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 115. The Bangalore Hotels Association on Monday said the hotel and restaurant operations across the city are likely to be affected starting March 10.
Mehsana Couple Held in Guatemala Over Fake Canada Visa Plot
A couple from Mehsana, Gujarat, has been arrested in Guatemala for allegedly attempting to reach the United States using fake Canadian visa documents. According to sources, Jayesh Barot (48) and his wife Nayana Barot had hired an agent from Kalol, paying nearly Rs.1.40 crore for arrangements to enter the US through the “Canada route.”
The couple reportedly stayed in Spain for over a month on a short-term

Canada before crossing into the US. However, Guatemalan authorities detected the forged documents during transit and detained them. Mojtaba Khamenei Named Iran’s Supreme Leader
Dubai/Jerusalem:
Iran on Monday named Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father Ali Khamenei as Supreme Leader, signaling that hardliners remain firmly in charge in Tehran a week into its conflict with the United States and Israel.
Mojtaba, a mid-ranking cleric with influence inside Iran's security forces and vast business networks under his father, had been seen as a frontrunner in the lead up to the vote by the assembly, a body of 88 clerics charged with choosing the new leader after Ali Khamenei.
"By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the assembly said in a statement issued just after midnight Tehran time.

Oil soars past $100 a barrel as US-Israel war on Iran rages
Oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel amid the fallout of the United States and Israel’s war on Iran. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose more than 20 percent on Sunday, at one point topping $114 a barrel, as fears grew of prolonged disruption to global energy supplies. After moderating slightly, the benchmark was hovering around $107.50 as of 02:30 GMT on Monday. The surge marked the first time oil rose above $100 per barrel since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Trump Says Iran War End Decision Will Be Mutual With Netanyahu
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the decision to end the ongoing war with Iran will be made jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing it as a “mutual” decision between the two leaders. Trump made the remarks during a phone interview, stressing that both countries are closely coordinating their military and strategic actions during the conflict. According to Trump, discussions between Washington and Tel Aviv are ongoing regarding how and when the war should conclude. He said Netanyahu will have significant input in the process, though he indicated that he would ultimately make the final decision “at the

right time” after considering all factors. The comments come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following joint U.S.–Israel military operations targeting Iranian military infrastructure and missile systems. Trump claimed the coordinated campaign had weakened Iran’s capabilities and prevented what he described as a broader regional threat. The conflict has already triggered global concerns over security and energy markets, with rising oil prices and increasing instability in the region. Analysts say the close cooperation between the United States and Israel will play a crucial role in determining the future course of the war and whether diplomatic efforts can eventually bring the conflict to an end.

Opposition Questions Need for US Nod on Russian Oil
Opposition parties have criticised the Centre after the United States announced a temporary waiver allowing Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil, questioning whether India needs Washington’s “permission” for its energy decisions.
The waiver, announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, will remain in place for 30 days to ensure oil supplies continue flowing into global markets amid tensions in the Middle East.
Congress leaders strongly objected to the language used by the US.
Manish Tewari said the announcement reflected “neo-imperial arrogance” and questioned whether India had become a country that required US approval for its energy security. Fellow Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram also criticised the move, while Arvind Kejriwal asked who the US was to grant such permission.
The BJP rejected the criticism, with party leader Praveen Khandelwal calling it a political tactic by the opposition. He said the government has been transparent about the situation and accused opposition parties of trying to create controversy.
Karnataka Plans Social Media Ban for Under16s
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today proposed a ban on social media use for children below the age of 16 in the state. The announcement was made as the Chief Minister presented his 17th budget.
"With the objective of preventing adverse effects of increasing mobile usage on children, usage of social media will be banned for children under the age of 16," Siddaramaiah said. The proposal comes amid rising concerns about excessive screen time, declining academic focus, behavioural changes, and mental health challenges among teenagers. The government believes that unrestricted access to smartphones has contributed significantly to social media obsession, exposing children to harmful content and, in some cases, substance abuse networks.

US Open to Trade With India, But Wary After China Experience
"'America First' obviously does not mean 'America alone'... because one of the ways that you can accomplish objectives is through cooperation with other countries," US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said.
Donald Trump’s “America First” policy continues to shape US trade and foreign policy, emphasising the protection of American economic interests.
Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said Washington is willing to expand trade with India but will
avoid repeating the mistakes it made with China two decades ago. He said earlier economic concessions helped China become a major commercial rival, and the US would now ensure that future trade deals remain fair to American workers. Landau noted that the recently negotiated USIndia tariff framework reflects this approach. However, he clarified that “America First” does not mean isolation, stressing that cooperation with partners like India remains essential for mutually beneficial economic growth.

Kareena Kapoor Criticises Bollywood’s Gore Trend
Actor Kareena Kapoor recently spoke about the growing dominance of hypermasculine action films in Hindi cinema and the increasing focus on violence and spectacle. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kareena discussed how the current trend in films seems to prioritise aggression and gore over emotion and entertainment.
In recent years, big-ticket action films such as Animal, Jawan and Pathaan have dominated the box office, sparking debates about whether violent action spectacles are becoming the most commercially viable form of cinema.
During the discussion, Kareena pointed out that the current wave of films often lacks the elements that once defined mainstream Bollywood entertainment. Reflecting on the shift in storytelling styles, she said the new trend focuses heavily on aggression and spectacle rather than joy, romance or music — aspects she believes traditionally brought colour and energy to Hindi cinema.
Actor Kalyani Priyadarshan, who was also part of the conversation, spoke about how audience preferences play a major role in shaping trends within the industry. She emphasised that cinema’s direction is not determined solely by producers but also by what viewers respond to. Explaining her perspective on the current trend, Kalyani said, “Right now, I am going to call this a trend because I believe it's a trend and it's not going to last. But the trend has always been about spectacle. Every scene has to be sensational and shocking. And I think it translates that you can show spectacle with violence and easily shocking things. People are thinking that's what's selling cinema. I don't think that's what selling cinema right now, but I think that's where it's heading right now, and we're losing the small films and small moments and a lot of emotional intimate moments, and it scares me a little.”

Suresh Triveni: Anil Kapoor’s Subedaar Echoes 80s Revenge Films
Filmmaker Suresh Triveni speaks about the inspiration behind his upcoming film Subedaar, his fascination with mainstream Hindi cinema, and why he chose to explore a more aggressive storytelling style this time. Subedaar was born out of an urge to reconnect with the child in me who was fascinated by the sights and sounds of popular Hindi cinema. No matter how much pressure there is to be known as a “serious” filmmaker, you can’t silence the kid inside you the one who made you fall in love with movies in the first place. For me, Subedaar is also a fanboy tribute to Anil Kapoor, whose career has always fascinated me. He’s an ever-evolving actor, and I felt it was time to remind audiences of the star power he still commands. That’s really the genesis of Subedaar.

US Pressures Sri Lanka Not To Repatriate Iran Ship Survivors
The United States has reportedly urged Sri Lanka not to repatriate survivors from the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, which was sunk by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean near Galle this week, according to a confidential State Department cable cited by Reuters. The attack, which killed dozens of sailors, marked the first such US naval strike since World War II and signalled a widening confrontation involving Iran. Sri Lanka had earlier taken in 208 crew members from another Iranian naval vessel, IRIS Booshehr, found stranded in its exclusive economic zone, citing humanitarian responsibility under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The US cable said American diplomat Jayne Howell urged Colombo to avoid sending the sailors back to Iran and to prevent Tehran from using them for propaganda. Sri Lankan authorities are currently moving the Booshehr and its crew to secure locations while the ship remains under custody during the ongoing conflict.
Indians “Good Actors”: Trump Aide on Russian Oil Waiver
The US said it has given "permission" to India to buy Russian oil that is on ships already floating on waterways with a view to easing supplies around the world amid Iran war.
New York: The United States has temporarily allowed India to purchase Russian oil already loaded on ships to ease global
supply pressures amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said India had acted responsibly regarding sanctions and described Indians as “very good actors” for complying with Washington’s earlier request to stop buying sanctioned Russian crude.
Speaking to Fox Business, Bessent said India had halted such purchases last fall and was planning to replace them with American oil. However, due to supply disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and the war involving Iran, the US granted a temporary waiver allowing Indian refiners to process Russian oil already at sea.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the step would quickly move stored oil into refineries, helping boost global supply and reduce price pressure. Officials emphasised that the decision is a short-term measure and does not indicate a broader shift in US policy toward Russia.
The 30-day waiver was issued under the administration of Donald Trump and applies only to Russian oil loaded on vessels before March 5, 2026.
India Let Another Iran Ship Dock Before US Sank IRIS Dena
The sources said Iran asked India to "take in" its ship IRIS Lavan and the request was approved on Sunday.
New Delhi:
A day after India said it had launched a search-and-rescue mission after a US submarine attacked an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, government sources have revealed that India has allowed another Iranian vessel to dock in Kochi.
IRIS Dena, a Moudge-class frigate, was torpedoed by a US submarine 40 nautical miles off Galle in southern Sri Lanka on the morning of Wednesday, March 4, while it was returning to Iran after participating in the MILAN multilateral naval exercise. The ship sank as a result of the attack and Sri Lanka said it had recovered the bodies of 87 people. Sources said on Friday that another ship, the IRIS Lavan, was also in the region in connection with the exercise and the International Fleet Review.
Reported
Explosions have rocked one of Tehran's main commercial airports, with eyewitnesses reporting a burning plane on the tarmac. Israel earlier said it was launching a new wave of strikes on Iran. President Trump has said there will be "no deal" with Iran except "unconditional surrender".

Responding to reports that Russia has aided Iran, US defence secretary Pete Hegseth tells CBS News that Trump is "well aware of who's talking to who". Tehran residents tell BBC Persian "last night was the worst night" so far and describe strikes "every few hours"

A 24-year-old Gujarati youth living in the United States has been arrested after police found $120,000 in cash and gold inside his car during a traffic stop in Texas. The accused, identified as Anuj Ashishbhai Modi, was detained in Smith County after officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety stopped his vehicle on Interstate 20 for driving too close behind a semi-truck. According to reports, Modi appeared nervous during questioning and gave inconsistent answers about his travel. Police then called a dog squad, which alerted officers to suspicious contents in the vehicle. During the search, a black parcel hidden under the front passenger seat was
found containing $120,000 in cash and several gold items. Modi was detained and taken to the department’s Tyler office for questioning..
During interrogation, he admitted he had collected the parcel from an elderly woman in Longview after being asked by a friend in India to deliver it to another person in Dallas. U.S. Authorities Take Down One of the World’s Biggest Hacker Forums
WASHINGTON, DC -The U.S. Department of Justice has announced the seizure of LeakBase, one of the world’s largest online forums used by cybercriminals to trade stolen data and cybercrime tools. According to a court affidavit unsealed on March 3, the platform had more than 142,000 registered members and contained over 215,000 messages exchanged between users. Operating on the open web in English, LeakBase maintained a massive archive of hacked databases obtained from high-profile cyberattacks. These databases included hundreds of millions of compromised account credentials, allowing criminals to buy and sell sensitive information. The forum reportedly facilitated the sale of stolen data from U.S. corporations and individuals, including credit and debit card numbers, banking account and routing details, usernames and passwords, and other personally identifiable or business-sensitive

On March 3 and 4, law enforcement agencies from 14 countries, including the United States, carried out coordinated actions against the forum.
The operation, organized through Europol in The Hague, resulted in the shutdown of LeakBase, the seizure of its data, and the confiscation of two domains used by the site. Authorities also placed seizure banners on the
Healing Hope: Cancer Care for Mongolian Children
Tsetsegsaikhan Batmunkh, founder of the National Cancer Council of Mongolia, had long heard heartbreaking stories from parents desperately searching for cancer medicines for their children. Through social media and group chats, families exchanged information about medications and ways to obtain them. Some traveled across borders to find treatment, while others turned to the black market.
In Mongolia, where about 100 to 120 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, the biggest challenge has not been diagnosis but access to reliable medicine. Limited importers and frequent shortages of essential drugs often forced families to seek medicines through informal and sometimes illegal channels.
“It was really difficult to see how parents were struggling to get medicines,” Batmunkh said. “They were relying on each other or third parties to find drugs that were not legally available in the country.”
This situation began to change with the launch of the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines, an initiative led by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the Pan American Health Organization’s Strategic Fund. The program provides essential generic cancer medicines to low- and middleincome countries at no cost.
Several pilot countries, including Mongolia, Ecuador, Nepal, Uzbekistan and Zambia, began receiving medicines in 2025. More countries are expected to join in 2026.
Dr. Tsetsegsaikhan Batmunkh
This situation began to change with the launch of the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines, an initiative led by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in collaboration with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Pan American Health Organization’s Strategic Fund.
The initiative aims to improve survival rates for children with cancer in lowerincome nations, where survival can be below 30%, far lower than in wealthier countries. By strengthening supply chains, improving medical training and supporting national health systems, the program seeks to ensure long-term access to quality treatment. Mongolia started receiving medicines in
early 2025 and will continue to receive a steady supply for the next five years.
The effort is coordinated with the Mongolian Ministry of Health, WHO, UNICEF and the National Center for Maternal and Child Health.
For many families, the impact has been immediate. One mother from a rural area described the medicines as a lifeline for her child with leukemia.
“It was a huge relief,” Batmunkh said. “Doctors and pharmacists are also reassured knowing the medicines are available, reliable and will not suddenly run out.”
Beyond supplying medicines, the program is helping strengthen Mongolia’s healthcare system through training, technical support and improved treatment protocols— bringing new hope to children and families facing cancer.

Officials stated that the takedown disrupts a major global hub where cybercriminals obtained and profited from stolen personal and financial information. The operation highlights the growing international cooperation among law enforcement agencies in combating cybercrime and dismantling digital platforms used to facilitate data theft.

Arvind Raman Emphasizes NIST’s Global Technology Role
WASHINGTON, DC -Arvind Raman, the engineering scholar nominated to lead the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), told senators that the agency must focus on accelerating American innovation and setting global technology standards as the United States competes with China in emerging technologies.
Appearing before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, Raman shared his personal journey from India to the United States, describing it as an example of the opportunities the country offers to immigrants.
“I first came to the United States 35 years ago from India to study engineering at Purdue University,” Raman said. “I had only a few dollars in my pocket.” He recalled surviving his early days with the help of a university loan available to students without credit history and support from a local Goodwill store while waiting for his first paycheck as a research assistant. Today, Raman serves as the dean of engineering at Purdue University, where he has worked as a faculty member for more than two decades and now leads one of the largest engineering colleges in the United States.

Bhattacharya Urges Vaccination as Measles Cases Raises Across the U.S.
WASHINGTON, DC – Measles cases are rising at an alarming rate across the United States, putting the country at risk of losing its long-held status as a nation where the disease has been officially eliminated. The U.S. has maintained this designation since 2000. However, as of January 20, the country technically met the criteria that could result in losing that standing.
In response, the Pan American Health Organization has scheduled an April meeting with U.S. and Mexican officials to review updated data and assess each country’s status.
Amid the growing concern, acting CDC Director Jay Bhattacharya addressed
the public in a video statement posted on social media on March 2. He urged families to consider vaccination as outbreaks continue to spread nationwide, noting that the CDC is deploying additional resources and working closely with states to strengthen outreach efforts.
According to the CDC, 1,136 confirmed measles cases and 10 new outbreaks
have already been reported this year.
This follows a troubling previous year, which marked the worst measles surge in decades, with 2,300 reported cases.
“There is no cure for measles, which is why prevention is so critical,” Bhattacharya said. “The MMR vaccine remains the most reliable and effective way to prevent it. Two doses are 97% effective at providing lifelong protection against measles and its complications. Vaccination protects not only individuals but entire communities.”
Bhattacharya also emphasized that health care providers are available to help families make informed decisions with confidence. His language reflects a broader messaging approach also used by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has
framed vaccine discussions around informed consent and shared clinical decision-making.
While Bhattacharya has previously criticized certain pandemic-era mandates, he has stated that he is not opposed to vaccines in general. In contrast, Kennedy has spent decades as a prominent vaccine skeptic, with public positions that many health experts have characterized as vaccine denial.
“Our goal is simple: healthy children, thriving families, and strong communities today and into the future,” Bhattacharya added. “Measles is preventable, and vaccination remains the most effective way to protect yourself and those around you.

Cook County and Illinois Cleared $1.5 Billion in Medical Debt for Residents
HiIndia Newsdesk
CHICAGO, IL -Cook County Board
President Toni Preckwinkle and Illinois
Governor JB Pritzker announced that, in partnership with national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, more than $1.5 billion in medical debt owed by Cook County residents has been eliminated. The County has also committed to continuing this effort beyond the expiration of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding in 2026, ensuring that medical debt relief remains part of its long-term commitment to improving health equity and economic stability.
“Medical debt is a weight that follows families for years and disproportionately affects the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
“Many residents already facing systemic barriers also struggle with an expensive and broken healthcare system. I’m proud to partner with Governor Pritzker to bring meaningful relief and peace of mind to hundreds of thousands of Cook County residents.”
Governor JB Pritzker said the Illinois Medical Debt Relief Program is helping working parents, students, and seniors gain financial security by removing the burden of overwhelming medical bills.
“Illinois is a nationwide leader in erasing medical debt for our residents, thanks in large part to President Preckwinkle’s trailblazing advocacy for Cook County,” Pritzker said. “Together, these programs are making healthcare more accessible and affordable across Illinois.”
Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton emphasized the broader economic
impact of the initiative.
“Forgiving medical debt isn’t just compassionate—it’s smart economic policy,” Stratton said. “Debt relief increases economic activity, stabilizes households, and strengthens communities, helping build a stronger Illinois.”
The initiative began in 2022, when Cook County launched its Medical Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI). The program purchases outstanding medical debt for less than a penny on the dollar, allowing large amounts of debt to be eliminated at relatively low cost.
Cook County became the first local government in the nation to use ARPA funding to erase medical debt. By leveraging $7 million in ARPA funds, the County eliminated more than $820 million in debt through its program. At the statewide level, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services has secured more than $1.1
billion in medical debt relief, including $700 million for Cook County residents. Combined, the programs have erased approximately $1.5 billion in medical debt in Cook County, the largest amount forgiven at the county level anywhere in the United States.
Medical debt remains the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States and disproportionately affects Black and Latino communities. More than 770,000 Cook County residents—over 15% of the county’s population—have benefited from debt forgiveness through these programs.
One Cook County resident, identified as L.D., shared the relief the program provided.
“I’m extremely grateful for having this debt erased,” the resident said. “During one of the most painful chapters of my life, after my daughter was rushed to the ER, that $3,500 bill was a burden I carried every day. Knowing it’s gone—
American Travelers Urged to Stay Alert in Middle East and Pakistan
WASHINGTON, DC -The United States has ordered the departure of nonemergency government personnel from several countries in the Middle East and Pakistan and has updated travel advisories across the region amid rising tensions following recent hostilities with Iran.
The US State Department has raised travel advisories for Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman to Level 3 — Reconsider Travel. Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Pakistan remain at the same advisory level as security concerns continue to grow.
According to the advisory, “Following the onset of hostilities between the United States and Iran on February 28, there has been an ongoing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran, along with significant disruptions to commercial flights.”
The State Department said it ordered the departure of non-emergency US government employees and family members from several countries due to heightened security risks.
In the United Arab Emirates, the
advisory level was raised from Level 2 to Level 3 because of concerns related to armed conflict and terrorism. Similarly, advisories for Jordan and Oman were elevated to Level 3 due to potential risks from terrorism and the possibility of regional armed conflict as tensions escalate across the Middle East. For Saudi Arabia, the updated advisory warns of risks linked to armed conflict, terrorism, and strict enforcement of local laws, including regulations governing social media activity.
The advisory also noted that drone and missile attacks linked to Yemen
in previous years have targeted cities, airports, and energy infrastructure in the region. Americans were also warned about the possibility of exit bans and strict enforcement of local regulations. Meanwhile, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar remain at Level 3 — Reconsider Travel, as officials continue to warn of ongoing security risks tied to regional tensions.
In Qatar, the US Embassy has suspended routine consular services and has urged American citizens to leave the country if possible.
The warnings also extend to Pakistan, where the State Department ordered non-emergency staff and their families to depart from US consulates in Lahore and Karachi due to security concerns. Pakistan remains under Level 3 — Reconsider Travel, while Balochistan province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and areas near the Line of Control are under Level 4 — Do Not Travel due to terrorism and security threats.
The US travel advisory system ranges from Level 1 — Exercise Normal Precautions to Level 4 — Do Not Travel, which indicates extreme security risks.
and that people care—gave me hope.” Eligible debts are erased automatically, and residents do not need to apply. Those receiving relief are notified by mail in an envelope from Undue Medical Debt, informing them that their medical debts have been permanently abolished.
Cook County’s partnership with Undue Medical Debt has also helped set a national example. More than 25 state and local governments across the country have since launched similar programs. Cook County officials continue to encourage hospitals and healthcare providers to participate in order to expand the program’s reach.

Illegal Hospic and Elder Care Network Leads to Arrests in Carson, CA
CARSON, CA. - Authorities arrested at least two suspects in connection with a suspected illegal elder care network operating in Carson.
According to investigators, the large-scale raid involved the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department along with federal partners.
Officials said seven elderly patients rescued from four homes were found severely malnourished, neglected, and denied necessary medical treatment.
Sources indicate that staff at these facilities were not professional medical providers, but impostors operating without proper licenses or medical training.
A nonprofit organization, California Health Advocates, reports a concerning rise in hospice fraud across the region. The group says the state has revoked more than 280 hospice licenses over the past two years.
The identities of the two suspects have not yet been released.
Authorities also said it remains unclear how long the unlicensed facilities had been operating before the raid, or how many other patients may have passed through the homes.
The specific charges against the suspects have not yet been announced.
Four of the rescued patients were hospitalized and will undergo medical evaluation and treatment,
The District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the case for formal charges once the Sheriff’s Department and federal investigators complete their investigation of the four properties.

The District Attorney’s Office is

Catherina Isidro, Executive Director of California Health Advocates, said elderly individuals are often targeted through deceptive tactics. Seniors may be invited to free lunches or offered gifts in exchange for signing socalled acceptance forms, which can actually authorize companies to bill Medicare for hospice services.
"One person could be enrolled into four or five different hospices without even knowing about it," Isidro said.
Officials also warn the public to watch for several red flags, including:
• Hospice companies offering free services or gifts such as meals, housekeeping, cooking, or grocery delivery.
• Being asked to sign “acceptance forms” in exchange for gifts, which may actually authorize billing Medicare for hospice or other services.
• Unsolicited visits or phone calls from hospice providers, which are often scams.
• Enrollment in “palliative care” programs that may actually be hospice care requiring a terminal diagnosis.

Authorities Alert Chicago Residents to Fake Donation Scams
CHICAGO, IL - Chicago police are warning the public of a recent scam seeking donations after a tragic event in the South Loop and Near South Side.
Chicago police are warning residents about a recent scam targeting individuals in the South Loop and Near South Side neighborhoods. The scheme involves suspects approaching victims and requesting donations for what they claim is a tragic or emergency event.
According to police reports, the offenders tell victims they are collecting money to help those affected by a “tragic event.”
When a victim agrees to donate, the suspects ask to use the victim’s phone or request assistance in transferring funds through a mobile payment application. Once the phone is in their possession, the offenders quickly transfer money from the victim’s bank account or cash payment apps into their own accounts. In at least two reported incidents, the suspects forcibly took the victims’ phones in order to complete the fraudulent transactions.

CHICAGO, IL - A Chicago convenience store owner has been sentenced to prison after being convicted in a long-running scheme that defrauded a federal food assistance program designed to support low-income women and children.
Hassan Abdellatif, 37, of Chicago, was sentenced Tuesday to four years in federal prison. According to prosecutors, Abdellatif participated in a coordinated fraud scheme between 2010 and 2018, working with eight other convenience store owners or employees across the Chicago area to illegally redeem checks from the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.
The WIC program is a federally funded initiative that provides nutritious food assistance to lowincome pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and young children. Prosecutors said Abdellatif and his co-conspirators allowed customers to use WIC checks to purchase items that were not eligible under the program’s rules. In many instances, those products were sold at inflated prices, further increasing the amount of fraudulent reimbursements claimed from the government.
Authorities said the scheme involved 10 convenience stores, which collectively redeemed more than $19 million in WIC checks during the eight-year operation.
A federal jury convicted Abdellatif last year on five criminal counts, including: Two counts of wire fraud, One count of fraudulently obtaining government benefits, Two counts of willfully failing to file corporate tax returns and Financial Penalties
In addition to the four-year prison sentence, the judge ordered Abdellatif to pay more than $8.8 million in restitution to the federal government.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kartik Raman described the scheme as “extremely serious, complex, and wide-ranging in scope.”
In a written statement to the court before sentencing, Raman emphasized the broader harm caused by the fraud.
“Vulnerable communities are impacted when individuals steal from those programs,” he wrote. Federal investigators charged eight additional individuals in connection with the case. All of them have pleaded guilty and are currently awaiting sentencing.

FDA’s Vinay Prasad Resigns Again as Vaccine Leadership Faces Scrutiny
WASHINGTON, DC – Scientist Vinay Prasad, who oversees the approval process for vaccines and new therapies, is stepping down amid controversies over his decisions to tighten certain regulations. His departure — for the second time within a year — from the post of director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research was announced on March 6 by the agency’s head, Marty Makary.
Prasad had previously resigned in July, less than two months after taking the directorship, following criticism from the extreme right over his past remarks supporting Democrats. However, he was brought back in August by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., with whom he shared some — though not all — skepticism about the medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry.
Makary wrote on X that Prasad, who “got a tremendous amount accomplished”
during his tenure, will return to the University of California, San Francisco, where he serves as a professor. “Under his leadership, his center hit a record number of approvals of medications,” Makary added.
Although Prasad loosened some trial requirements for therapies — such as allowing approval based on one major

study instead of two — the types of trials he required created tensions with pharmaceutical companies.
One recent dispute involved Moderna, when Prasad blocked the company’s application to release a flu vaccine, raising concerns about its trial data. The company and others in the pharmaceutical industry pushed back, and Makary ultimately overruled Prasad.
Another controversy arose when Prasad refused to allow an application from the Dutch company UniQure for a drug intended to treat Huntington’s disease, a neurological disorder that affects the brain.
While working in academia, Prasad had also criticized some of the regulations and procedures introduced by the administration of former President Joe Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those criticisms — along with his broader critiques of the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry — caught the attention of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who later brought him into the agency.

Loomer Targets Kash Patel Over Indian Roots and Terrorism Remarks
prominent supporter of former President Donald
has again criticized Kash Patel on social media following the deadly shooting in Austin that left two people dead, including 21-year-old Savitha Shan.
Loomer accused Patel of failing to clearly acknowledge what she described as possible Islamic extremist motives behind the attack. In her posts, she cited reports that investigators found items linked to Iran and Islam, including clothing displaying an Iranian flag and the phrase “Property of Allah,” a Quran in the suspect’s car, and a photograph of Iran’s supreme leader at the suspect’s residence.
The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, is being investigated for possible ties to terrorism. Authorities have also said they are examining a potential connection to Iran.
Loomer questioned Patel’s public description of the incident as having a “potential terrorism nexus,” asking why officials had not formally labeled the attack as Islamic terrorism.
She has previously criticized Patel on social media, including remarks referencing his Indian heritage and questioning his decisions as FBI director.
The March 1 shooting in Austin left two people dead and 14 others wounded.
