US Freezes Immigrant Visa Processing For 75 Countries

The United States has long rejected visas from people who appear likely to end up needing government welfare, but the State Department said it would now use the same authority for a blanket suspension of immigrant visas based on nationality. HiIndia Newsdesk

T h e D o n a l d Tr u m p administration has indefinitely suspended the processing of immigrant visas for nationals of 75 countries in a sweeping move to tighten legal immigration to the United States. The freeze, effective January 21, applies to people seeking permanent residency and work authorization, not tourists or temporary visitors. Affected countries span Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, Brazil, Nigeria and Thailand. The State Department said the pause will remain in place while immigration procedures are reassessed to prevent entrants deemed likely to rely on

public welfare. “Immigrant visa processing from these 75 countries will be paused to protect American taxpayers,” spokesperson Tommy Pigott said. There is no timeline for lifting the suspension, according to US officials.

The decision builds on stricter vetting measures introduced over the past year, further tightening one of the world’s toughest visa systems. Critics note the rationale conflicts with studies by groups such as the Cato Institute and the American Immigration Council, which find immigrants use fewer public benefits than US-born citizens. A n Im m i g r at i on a n d Cu s t om s Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot a man in the leg in the US city of Minneapolis, where an ICE agent shot dead a woman last week. In a statement, the DHS said federal officers initially pursued the man in a car chase because he was illegally in the US from Venezuela. The City of Minneapolis confirmed a man was shot and taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. An ICE officer was also taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, the DHS said. Minneapolis city officials said on X: "We understand there is anger. We ask the public to remain calm."

The astronauts, known as Crew 11, are expected to splash down off the coast of California in the early hours of Thursday local time.

Their journey was cut short because of medical issue involving one crew member, Nasa said. The agency did not provide details about the crew member or the nature of the medical issue, but said they were in stable condition. Control of the ISS has been handed over to Russian cosmonaut Sergey KudSverchkov and two other crew members. The astronauts, Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, Japan's Kimiya Yui and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, arrived on the ISS on 1 August expecting to complete a standard six and a half month stay. They were due to come home in mid-February. But last week, a scheduled spacewalk by Fincke and Cardman was called off at the last minute.

Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement announcing the probe: "The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking." xAI, which develops Grok, has previously said "anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suf fer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content". The overhaul, announced in September, sharply raised the visa application fee to $100,000 and shifted selection toward higher-paid roles, a move the administration says is aimed at protecting American workers. From February, the rules are set to tighten further, with preference given to top-tier, Level-IV wage applicants, making entry harder for many skilled migrants. Since the changes, major US companies including FedEx, Walmart and Verizon have faced online harassment, with accusations that they are selling jobs to Indian workers. Raqib Naik of the Center for the Study of Organised Hate said some attacks appear coordinated, targeting Indian-American entrepreneurs and portraying Indians as “job stealers.” Data from Stop AAPI Hate and Moonshot shows threats against South Asians rose 12% in November, while online slurs increased 69%.

Infosys CEO and Managing Director Salil Parekh denied claims that an Infosys employee was in detention or deported by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Speaking during a Q3 earnings conference on Wednesday, he clarified that an employee was denied entry to the

US and was sent back to India, but there was no detention or deportation involved. A post on X that went viral on January 13 alleged that an Infosys employee based in Mysore was in the US for an on-site project and was held by ICE. According to the post, the employee was given two hours to decide whether to return to India or go to jail. The post further claimed that the employee was escorted by agents during his travel back to India and faced public humiliation during flights via Frankfurt and later to Bengaluru. The Infosys lawyers were present at the Bengaluru airport to receive the employee, and the company planned to take legal action against US authorities, the post said.

On Wednesday, the country's largest wireless carrier Verizon suffered a massive outage affecting its cellular data and voice services. After thousands of users took to social media to complain that their devices were showing SOS or zero service bars, it became clear that the outage is big and affecting people across America. Verizon users began experiencing service issues around noon ET, as per reports. Since afternoon Verizon has issued many statements on social media saying its engineers were working to address the issue. But it did not clarify what has been the cause of this widespread and long outage. Late at 9:00 pm EST Verizon wrote: "Today, we let many of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry.” Republican New York State Assembly member Anil Beephan, Jr., called on the Federal Communications Commission to investigate the outage. It may be noted that Verizon has more than 146 million customers across America.

The Congress MP said he had been "troubled" by the US tariff regime from the very beginning, adding that India was already at a disadvantage compared to its regional competitors.

A US federal court has convicted Indianorigin gynaecologist and oncologist Dr Sanjeev Kumar, who practised in Memphis, Tennessee, in a multi-million-dollar healthcare fraud case involving unnecessary medical procedures and misuse of medical devices. According to court documents, Dr Kumar was found guilty on 40 charges, including 18 counts of tampering with medical devices, 16 counts of misbranding medical devices and six counts of healthcare fraud. Prosecutors said he routinely performed hysteroscopies and biopsies on patients without medical necessity and submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare and Medicaid through his staff.

Between 2019 and 2024, Kumar allegedly carried out more than 15,000 hysteroscopywith-biopsy procedures on 5,559 insured patients, while using only about 200 singleuse hysteroscopes—some purchased as early

as 2019 and reused years later without proper sterilisation. Authorities said this violated federal safety rules and put patients’ lives at risk. Prosecutors stated Kumar generated bills worth $41 million during the five-year period and received around $4.8 million in reimbursements. His defence argued approved disinfection methods were followed, but the court rejected the claim. Sentencing is scheduled for April 9. Kumar is currently out on bond and continues to deny wrongdoing, saying he treated patients “like family” and will keep fighting to prove his innocence.

The H200, Nvidia's second-most-advanced semiconductor, had been restricted by Washington over concerns that it would give China's technology industry and military an edge over the US. The Commerce Department said the chips can be shipped to China granted that there is sufficient supply of the processors in the US. President Donald Trump said last month that he would allow the chip sales to "approved customers" in China and collect a 25% fee. While some felt dejected that the prospects of higher education in some of the top universities of the world are increasingly narrowing; others viewed the post as an insult to Indian students – a majority of whom spend millions to study in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, the post received a barrage of angry reactions. One user responded, “A visa is a privilege, not a right.” So is talent. Guess who’s in shorter supply?” Another user wrote: “Shame on us who are dying to go to the USA. "We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe,” the State Department said in a social media post on Monday. “The State Department has now revoked over 100,000 visas, including some 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialised visas for individuals who had encounters with US law enforcement for criminal activity," it said. State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that in less than one year, the Trump administration has revoked over 100,000 visas. “That includes revoked visas from thousands of foreign nationals charged or convicted with crimes, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence,” he said. According to a Fox News report, the number of visas revoked in 2025 is more than double the 40,000 visas cancelled in 2024, the final year of former president Joe Biden's administration. The report said that while a majority of the revocations in 2025 were for business and tourist travellers who overstayed their visas, 8,000 students and 2,500 individuals on specialised visas had their document revoked due to criminal encounters with law enforcement.

Authorities File Charges Against 401 in Border Security Cases Late 2025 HiIndia Newsdesk

HOUSTON , TX– A total of 399 criminal cases related to border enforcement were filed in the Southern District of Texas between December 19 and January 2, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. The cases include 19 individuals accused of human smuggling, 146 charged with illegal entry, and 230 charged with illegal reentry after prior removal. Authorities stated that many of those charged have prior felony convictions involving narcotics, violent crime, firearms, or immigration-related offenses. Among those charged with felony reentry are individuals from Mexico, Honduras, and Cuba, including two men who were allegedly removed from the United States less than one month before being apprehended again. According to criminal complaints, Armando David Naranjo-Alemany, a

Cuban national, and Melvin Antonio Ramos-Avila, a Honduran national, were removed on November 28 and November 25, 2025, respectively, but were later found unlawfully present in South Texas in late December. Other defendants include Mexican nationals Ruben Jimenez-Garcia, Jose Raul Sotelo, and German GarzaVelez, all previously removed and later discovered back in the U.S. illegally. Their criminal histories reportedly include convictions related to controlled substances such as methamphetamine

or cocaine, burglary, and prior illegal reentry. Authorities also arrested Eva Aidee Rodriguez-Rivera, a Mexican national found in the Donna area. She had previously been removed and sentenced to 75 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. If convicted, defendants facing illegal reentry charges could receive sentences of up to 20 years in federal prison. These cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative aimed at strengthening border security, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. Federal officials emphasized that an indictment or criminal complaint is only an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
