A council meeting in Frisco, Texas saw a number of speakers wearing “America First” hats as they took part in the meeting that centered on frauds linked to the H-1B visa and the “Indian takeover,” of the city.In the past few weeks, a big social media campaign had been running about a large number of foreigners taking over the city. Some conservative influencers have been urging people to come out and attend the Frisco city Council meet and voice their concerns. Currently 33% of Frisco’s residents are Asian, making it one of the largest concentrations of
Asians. Responding to the anti-Indian sentiment, the only Indian American Councilmember Burt Thakur said: ““Somewhere along the way Indians came to America, and then they became Americans, and then they helped to reinforce the American Dream because the American Dream requires participation.”
He added, “People are upset. And I suppose what I’m trying to say to you is this. Look to the left of you and look to the right of you. This is Frisco. … Together we can do amazing things.”

Trump Urges US to Move On From Epstein

Calls renewed focus on Epstein case a “distraction” from national priorities
Public pressure and unanswered questions keep controversy alive
Ryan Routh Sentenced to Life in Prison for Attempted Trump Assassination

Routh was convicted of trying to assassinate a major presidential candidate, using a firearm in furtherance of a crime, assaulting a federal officer, possessing a firearm as a felon and using a gun with a defaced serial number.
Aman convicted of trying to assassinate US President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course in 2024 was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison after a federal prosecutor said his crime was unacceptable “in this country or anywhere.”
US District Judge Aileen Cannon pronounced Ryan Routh’s fate in the same Fort Pierce courtroom that erupted into chaos in September when he tried to stab himself shortly after jurors found him guilty on all counts.
“American democracy does not work when individuals take it into their own hands to eliminate candidates. That’s what this individual tried to do” Assistant US Attorney John Shipley told the judge. Routh’s new defense attorney, Martin L. Roth, argued that “at the moment of truth, he chose not to pull the trigger.”
The judge pushed back, noting Routh’s history of arrests, to which Roth said, “He’s a complex person, I’ll give the court that, but he has a very good core.”
Over the past two months, the US Department of Justice has released millions of documents related to its sex-trafficking investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. Now, the president wants the nation to move on - but will it?
Deputy US Attorney General Todd Blanche has said the government's review of the Epstein fileswhich was mandated by a law passed by Congress in November - is over, and there are no grounds for new prosecutions.
"There's a lot of correspondence. There's a lot of emails. There's a lot of photographs," Blanche said on Sunday. "But that doesn't allow us necessarily to prosecute somebody."
While the justice department's review may be over, on Capitol Hill, the House of Representatives is pushing ahead with its own Epstein inquiry. Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are scheduled to testify later in February after Republicans threatened to hold them in contempt of Congress. Members of Congress and Epstein's victims, meanwhile, are continuing to call for further disclosures – pointing to documents they say exist but weren't included in the released files.
Trump Pushes Softer Immigration Approach

US President Donald Trump has said immigration agents could use a "softer touch" as his administration began pulling about a quarter of its force out of Minnesota, where two American citizens died last month in confrontations with federal officers. "I learned that maybe we could use a little bit of a softer touch," Trump told NBC News, adopting a rare conciliatory tone on his political touchstone. "But you still have to be tough." US border tsar Tom Homan said earlier 700 federal immigration agents would be withdrawn from the Minneapolis area. He said 2,000 agents would remain, and that he aimed to cut their presence in the city to its level before Operation Metro Surge began in December.
Bill Gates Regrets Epstein Ties, Melinda Says Questions Remain

Bill Gates rejected allegations from newly released Epstein-related documents that he hid a sexually transmitted disease from his wife.
Bill Gates has said he regrets ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein, after new attention on his past meetings with the disgraced financier. Speaking to Australia’s 9News, the Microsoft co-founder said claims linking him to misconduct were false and that spending
time with Epstein was a mistake.
“I regret every minute I spent with him,” Gates said. “I apologise that I did that.” His comments came after his former wife, Melinda French Gates, spoke publicly about the impact of Epstein’s links on their marriage, saying Gates must answer questions about the relationship. Gates rejected allegations from newly released Epstein-related documents that he hid a sexually transmitted disease from his wife. His office described the claims as false.
Thousands of Epstein documents taken down after victims identified

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has removed thousands of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein from its website after victims said their identities had been compromised. Lawyers for Epstein's victims said flawed redactions in the files released on Friday had "turned upside down" the lives of nearly 100 survivors. The DOJ said it had taken down all the flagged files and that mistakes were due to "technical or human error".

US must be prudent when supplying arms to Taiwan, Xi tells Trump

China's leader Xi Jinping called Taiwan "the most important issue" in China-US relations during a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Xi had told Trump to be "prudent" when supplying weapons to the island, state media reported, adding that he "attaches great importance" to ties with Washington and hoped both sides will
find ways to resolve their differences. Trump cast the call as "excellent" and "long and thorough".
Wednesday's call follows a flurry of visits by Western leaders, including UK's Keir Starmer, to China in recent months, hoping to reset relations with the world's second-largest economy. Trump himself is due to visit China in April, a trip he says he "very much looks forward to".
Israeli Strikes Kill 20 in Gaza After Soldier Hurt by Gunfire

At least 20 Palestinians, including several children and a paramedic, have been killed and almost 40 others wounded in Israeli strikes in Gaza, hospitals say.
The Israeli military said tanks and aircraft carried out "precise strikes" against what it called "terrorists" who opened fire on troops in the north of the strip, seriously wounding an officer. It added that the attack happened close to the Yellow Line, beyond which Israeli forces are stationed in Gaza, and that it constituted a "blatant violation" of the three-month-old ceasefire deal with Hamas. Hamas accused Israel of using the shooting as "a flimsy pretext to justify the continuation of killing and aggression against our people".
Iran's president
says it is
ready to negotiate with the US

President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Iran is ready to negotiate with the US after requests from "friendly governments in the region" to respond to a proposal for talks.
In a statement on X, Pezeshkian said he had told Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to pursue talks "provided that a suitable environment exists - one free from threats and unreasonable expectations".
His words come after the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned any attack on Iran would spark a "regional war".

Poland will launch an investigation into possible links between the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Russian intelligence, as well as any impact on
Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday.
The US Justice Department's recent release of millions of internal documents related to Epstein has revealed the late financier and sex offender's ties to many prominent people in politics, finance, academia and business - both before and after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to prostitution charges.
Tusk told a government meeting that authorities would establish a team
to investigate any potential fallout in Poland from Epstein's crimes, in particular in relation to what he said was possible involvement by Russian secret services.
Russia's foreign ministry did not immediately reply to a written request for comment on Tusk's allegations. The Russian Embassy in Warsaw also did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Trump says 'very dangerous' for UK to deal with China

Donald Trump said it was "very dangerous" for Britain to deal with China, as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer continued his visit to Beijing.
The US president was reacting to agreements announced after Sir Keir met Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of a three-day trip aimed at resetting relations between the UK and China.
The agreements are aimed at increasing business and investment between the two countries. "Well it's very dangerous for them to do that," Trump said at the premiere of a documentary about his wife Melania when asked what he thought of Britain increasing business ties with China.
Trump Threatens 50% Tariff on Canadian Aircraft

President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened Canada with a 50% tariff on any aircraft sold in the US, the latest salvo in his trade war with America's northern neighbor as his feud with Prime Minister Mark Carney expands. Trump's threat posted on social media came after he threatened over the weekend to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if it went forward with a planned trade deal with China. But Trump's threat did not come with any details about when he would impose the import taxes, as Canada had already struck a deal.
India Among Worst Hit by Extreme Heat in Oxford Study

India is set to face some of the most severe impacts of extreme heat, according to a new study by Oxford University. The research warns that rising temperatures, longer heatwaves and higher humidity levels could significantly affect public health, labour productivity and economic growth. Vulnerable groups such as outdoor workers, the elderly and low-income communities are expected to be at greater risk.

India Slams Pakistan Over Munir Immunity
Talks
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta's premier say the US should respect Canadian sovereignty after reports emerged that Alberta separatists had talked to the Trump administration about the province possibly leaving Canada. Carney said they "expect the US administration to respect Canadian sovereignty - I'm always clear with President Trump to that effect".
Similarly, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she expected US officials to leave discussions about the province's "democratic process" to Albertans and Canadians. Currently, Alberta separatists are collecting signatures for a petition process that could lead to a referendum on leaving Canada. The Financial Times has reported they had meetings with US officials, which drew criticism from some Canadian premiers.

India targeted Pakistan on the global stage for giving supreme powers to its Defence Chief, Asim Munir, advising Islamabad to "introspect" on the role of its armed forces in constitutional developments. Parvathaneni Harish, India's representative at the United Nations, said the Shehbaz Sharif-led government enabled the military forces to "engineer a constitutional coup" through the recent 27th amendment, which gave "lifetime immunity to its chief of defence forces". Pakistan is "well advised to introspect about the rule of law," he added while speaking at the UN Security Council open debate.

salary records and recent employer change. The traveller explained that he was working in a remote or hybrid role and had changed jobs six months earlier. While he presented a valid I-797 approval notice reflecting his current employer, his passport visa stamp still mentioned the previous employer. Immigration officials advised him to get fresh visa stamping with updated employer details before travelling again and refused onward travel. Texas: Two Indian-owned Texas Jewelry Stores Raided in $55M Gold Scam

Two Indian-owned jewelry stores in North Texas—Tilak Jewelers in Irving and Saima Jewelers in Frisco—were raided Thursday in connection with a $55 million gold laundering scam that targeted senior citizens. Authorities seized millions of dollars in cash and gold following a year-long investigation by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office and federal agencies. Three people were arrested.
According to CBS News Texas, the scam involved threatening emails sent to elderly victims, falsely accusing them of criminal activity and pressuring them to buy gold to avoid arrest. Couriers allegedly delivered the gold to the stores, where it was melted into jewelry or smuggled out of the country. Officials say nearly 200 seniors—most over 65—were defrauded of more than $7 million in retirement savings.
Trump’s Walmart Claim Debunked

US President Donald Trump falsely claimed that all Walmart stores in California would shut down due to a minimum wage hike.
The claim, shared via a video on his Truth Social platform, suggested that California had raised the minimum wage to $22 an hour, forcing Walmart to close over 250 stores.
Both Walmart and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office rejected the claim, calling it misleading and untrue. Officials clarified that California’s minimum wage is $16.90, not $22, and that all 303 Walmart stores in the state remain open. Walmart said it has no plan to shut stores in California and has recently opened a new outlet there.
US Museum Returns
Stolen Tamil Nadu Bronzes to India

The Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art has announced that it's returning three stolen bronze sculptures to India. The move came after rigorous provenance research showed that sculptures were removed illegally from Indian temples. The three relics that the US museum is returning are "Shiva Nataraja" (Chola period, circa 990), "Somaskanda" (Chola period, 12th century), and "Saint Sundarar with Paravai" (Vijayanagar period, 16th century).
Sunetra Pawar Steps Into Political Spotlight

Sunetra Pawar is likely to take oath as Maharashtra's deputy chief minister on Saturday evening.
Even before she stepped into the powerful Pawar family through her marriage to Ajit Pawar in 1985, Sunetra Pawar, then Sunetra Patil, had politics in her bones. Her father, Bajirao Patil, was a powerful local politician and her brother followed in his footsteps.
And yet, for nearly four decades, she stayed away from active politics, choosing to be part of decision-making behind the scenes as the NCP continued to play a pivotal role in Maharashtra and even national politics.
Then came the split, when Ajit Pawar parted ways with his uncle, Sharad Pawar, in 2023 and emerged as the head of his own party, claiming the name and symbol of the NCP in the process.
The next year - 2024 - proved to be a turning point for Sunetra Pawar, affectionately known by supporters as 'Vahini' (sister-in-law). She stepped into the political arena, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Baramati constituency against her sister-in-law Supriya Sule - who was representing the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) - only to lose by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes. She was then elected to the Rajya Sabha months later. Wednesday, and a plane crash which killed Ajit Pawar and four others, changed everything. The 62-yearold, still reeling from the loss, will now have to leverage every ounce of political knowledge she has as she attempts to fill her husband's formidable shoes, taking over not only as the NCP legislature party leader, but the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.
Takeaways from the millions of newly released Epstein files

Millions of new files relating to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been released by the US Department of Justice, the largest number of documents shared by the government since a law mandated their release last year.
Three million pages, 180,000 images and 2,000 videos were posted publicly on Friday.
The release came six weeks after the department missed a legal deadline signed into law by President Donald Trump that mandated all Epstein-related documents be shared with the public. "Today's release marks the end of a very comprehensive document identification and review process to ensure transparency to the American people and compliance," Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

SpaceX acquires xAI in Elon Musk deal valuing combined firm at USD 1.25 trillion
Elon Musk’s space firm SpaceX has acquired xAI, an artificial intelligence start-up also owned by Musk, in a tie-up which values the combined company at $1.25 trillion, cementing its standing as the most valuable private company in the world.
The deal values SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, according to investor Ross Gerber, a shareholder in the privately held xAI who received merger documents on Monday. Last year, Musk’s social media company X — which he purchased for $44 billion in 2022, when it was known as Twitter — was acquired by xAI in an all-stock deal.
The merger follows SpaceX’s filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last week seeking approval to launch a constellation of as many as one million data-centre satellites orbiting the Earth. The combined company, whose portfolio includes rockets, satellites, an AI chatbot and a social media platform,
Bank of England expected to hold interest rates

Interest rates are expected to remain on hold as the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets for the first time this year.
The MPC cut the Bank rate from 4% to 3.75% in December, and suggested rates were "likely to continue on a gradual downward path".
The Bank rate is the primary tool for the committee to try to keep inflation - which charts the annual rate of rising prices - as close to 2% as possible. It heavily influences the interest charged by lenders for loans and mortgages, and what banks and building societies give in returns to savers. The majority of analysts are predicting the MPC keeps the Bank rate on hold at 3.75% when it announces its latest decision at 12:00 GMT on Thursday.
Inflation remains above target at 3.4%, according to the latest data for the year to December.
The nine-member committee only narrowly voted for a cut in December and gave a fairly cautious view of the situation.
Analysts say there has been little data so far this year to change the balance between persistent inflation and weak economic growth. There is also an expectation that the Bank will be vague about when or by how much it will cut the Bank rate during the year as it awaits a clearer picture on inflation.

Pinterest sacks workers for creating tool to track layoffs

Pinterest has sacked two engineers for tracking which workers lost their jobs in a recent round of layoffs. The company recently announced job cuts, with chief executive Bill Ready stating in an email he was "doubling down on an AI-forward approach," according to an employee who posted some of the memo on LinkedIn.
Pinterest told investors the move would impact about 15% of the workforce, or roughly 700 roles, without saying which teams or workers were affected.
But then "two engineers wrote custom scripts improperly accessing confidential company information to identify the locations and names of all dismissed employees and then shared it more broadly," a company spokesperson told.
"This was a clear violation of Pinterest policy and of their former colleagues' privacy," the spokesperson added.
A script in this sense is essentially computer code written to automate a task within existing software or tweak its functionality for a specific purpose.
The script written by the Pinterest engineers was aimed at internal tools used at the company for employees to communicate, according to a person familiar with the firings who asked not to be identified.
The person said the script created an alert for which employee names within a tool like the team communication platform Slack were being removed or deactivated, giving some insight into who at the company was impacted by the layoffs. The identities of the two sacked engineers are not publicly known and the BBC has been unable to contact them. The technology industry has seen waves of layoffs in recent years.
data centres”, estimating that “within two to three years, the lowest-cost way to generate AI compute will be in space”. However, a more practical motivation may be the need to generate capital for xAI, which requires vast sums to finance its infrastructure build-out as it seeks to catch up with Google, OpenAI and Anthropic in the generative AI market.
The merger is taking place at a time when the US regulatory landscape is favourable, with the Trump administration rolling back many antitrust and environmental regulations. Musk’s SpaceX ally Jared Isaacman has been appointed head of NASA. FCC chairman Brendan Carr has also been a supporter of SpaceX’s Starlink, while Musk’s longtime friend David Sacks serves as the White House’s crypto and AI czar. In December, President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a single regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, undermining the authority of individual states.
Gold rebounds above $5,000 after US downs Iran drone

Wild fluctuations in the price of gold continued on Wednesday as geopolitical tensions reignited after the US downed an Iranian drone. The precious metal, which is seen as a so-called "safe haven" for investors in times of uncertainty, shot back above $5,000 (£3,650) an ounce following days of sharp falls. Gold prices had been propelled to record highs by rapid changes in US trade policy, ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and conflict and central banks increasing their purchases of bullion.
The Chinese planemaker taking on Boeing and Airbus
At the Singapore Airshow, the exhibition halls are lined with scale models, mock cockpits, and interactive displays showing the latest commercial jets and aviation technology. One booth is drawing particular attention: Comac, China's state-owned planemaker, which has made significant strides since its C919 passenger jet flew to Singapore in its first trip outside of Chinese territory two years ago. The plane is designed to compete with the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX and is increasingly targeting markets beyond China.

This Week In Wellness
Simple habits that protect your body, mind and sleep

Try This 7-Day Habit
• Walk 7,000 steps daily
• Take a 10–15 minute walk after dinner
• Avoid mobile phone while walking
• Breathe deeply, keep posture straight
• No gym. No pressure. Just consistency.
Why Walking Daily Is the Most Underrated Medicine
In an age of gym memberships, fitness apps and costly diet plans, health experts are increasingly recommending a simpler and more sustainable solution: daily walking. Once considered too basic to matter, walking is now being recognised as a foundation of long-term wellness.
Medical studies confirm that walking for 30 to 40 minutes a day can significantly lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Unlike high-intensity workouts, walking places minimal strain on joints and muscles, making it safe for seniors, beginners and people recovering from illness. Most importantly, it is easy to continue for years without burnout.
Doctors particularly emphasise post-meal walking, especially after dinner. Even a slow 10–15 minute walk supports digestion, reduces bloating and helps prevent sharp spikes in blood sugar levels. This simple habit has shown remarkable benefits for people with diabetes, pre-diabetes and weight management issues.
Beyond physical fitness, walking plays a vital role in mental and emotional health. Regular walking lowers stress hormones and releases endorphins that improve mood and mental clarity. Health professionals note that people who walk daily report reduced anxiety, better focus and a calmer mindset. Many also experience improved sleep quality within two weeks, as walking helps regulate the body’s natural sleep cycle.
Experts stress that consistency matters more than speed or distance. There is no need for power walking or tracking every step. Comfortable footwear, relaxed posture and steady breathing are sufficient. Walking outdoors, when possible, adds the benefit of fresh air and natural light, which further enhances mental well-being.
Morning walks help activate the body and improve energy levels throughout the day, while evening walks assist in unwinding after long hours of work. Choosing a regular time and making walking a daily routine is often more effective than occasional intense exercise. In a world increasingly affected by lifestyle diseases, walking remains a powerful, low-cost medicine—quietly improving health, one step at a time.
Doctor’s Note:
“Walking remains the safest and most effective exercise for long-term health.”

Comfortable footwear and steady pace are more important than speed.

Washington Post Layoffs: Shashi Tharoor’s Son Among 300
Axed

Washington:
In one of the most sweeping newsroom purges in recent American media history, The Washington Post has laid off more than 300 journalists and staff, over a third of its editorial workforce, triggering an outpouring of anguish from correspondents reporting from war zones, global capitals, and some of the world's most sensitive datelines.
Sources indicate the cuts have disproportionately hit the Post's foreign bureaus, local reporting teams, sports desk, and significant parts of the business division. Entire international reporting structures appear to have been dismantled in a move many current and former staff describe as a "dark day," not just for the newspaper, but for global journalism. Among those laid off was Ishaan Tharoor, the Post's senior international affairs columnist and the son of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. In a post on X, Ishaan Tharoor shared what looked like a picture of the newsroom, with a poster reading "Democracy Dies in Darkness." He captioned the post "A bad day."
Data Centres to Spark InternetStyle Job Boom in India: NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang

At a press conference at the 3DExperience World event in Houston, Huang said that the data centres in India could generate a lot of employment across construction, supply chains, and other segments.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said that AI infrastructures such as data centres can recreate the "incredible" scale of jobs that the internet created when it reached the Indian market. His remarks come days after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced during the Budget 2026, that India will provide a tax holiday till 2047 to any foreign companies using data centres built in the country.
At a press conference at the 3DExperience World event in Houston, Huang said that the data centres in India could generate a lot of employment across construction, supply chains and other segments.
"The actual building of the data centre is maybe 5,000 people, 10,000 people. They are electricians, plumbers, and construction workers. But don't forget, the derivative workforce, the labour that contributes to ultimately delivering that data centre, is quite gigantic," Huang said.
"Think about the entire supply chain, pipes, concrete, design, architecture, project management, and then, once the data centre is operational, the ongoing operations and the startup companies that are built on top of it," he added.
Moscow Says India Free to Decide on Russian Oil Trade

Russia said India is free to buy oil from any country after US President Donald Trump claimed India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil as part of the trade deal between New Delhi and Washington signed earlier this week. The Kremlin noted that Moscow is not the only crude supplier for New Delhi, and there is nothing new about India's decision to diversify its crude suppliers.
India has been importing around 1.5 million
At the peak, India was taking more than 2 million barrels a day, a level that fell to around 1.3 million barrels a day in December, a figure that's likely to remain stable this month.
barrels of Russian crude per day, even after Trump imposed 25 per cent punitive tariffs on Indian goods, according to Kpler, a global trade data provider. New Delhi is the second-largest purchaser of Russian crude, making it over one-third of the overall Indian imports.
"We, along with all other international energy experts, are well aware that Russia is not the only supplier of oil and petroleum products to India. India has always purchased these products from other countries. Therefore, we see nothing new here," Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said while responding to a question on the US claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to switch India's crude purchase from Russia to the United States and, potentially, from Venezuela.
Republicans Blame Indians After Shock Loss in Texas By-Election

Republicans in the United States have sparked controversy after blaming Indian and Hindu voters for their defeat in a recent Texas state senate byelection held on January 31. The low-profile election drew national attention when the Democratic candidate registered a decisive win in what has long been considered a Republican stronghold.
Indian-American groups reject allegations, call it racism as Democrats notch a stunning win in a Republican stronghold ahead of US midterms.
Following the loss, some Republican leaders alleged that Indian voters had tilted the result in favour of the Democrats. Florida-based Republican leader Chandler Langvin went so far as to suggest deporting Indians from Texas, triggering widespread criticism and outrage.
Indian-American organisations strongly rejected the allegations, noting that Indians make up less than two percent of the US population and cannot single-handedly determine election outcomes. They said the reaction reflected growing frustration, xenophobia and political desperation. The result marked a sharp political shift, with the seat swinging from a 17-point Trump victory in 2024 to a 14-point Democratic win in 2026, signalling changing trends ahead of the US midterm elections.
Indian-Origin Taxi Driver Faces Loss of US Citizenship

The US Department of Justice has initiated legal proceedings to revoke the American citizenship of Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-origin taxi driver, after it was found that he concealed his criminal history while applying for naturalisation. Singh became a US citizen on October 19, 2011, but authorities say he falsely declared his background despite facing serious criminal charges at the time. According to the Department of Justice, Singh was later convicted by a New York court in May 2014 on charges of first-
degree kidnapping and second-degree sexual assault. The case involved a female passenger who was attacked while travelling in his taxi. Prosecutors said Singh parked the vehicle when the passenger fell asleep, threatened her with a knife, restrained her, and committed the crime. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the offence. Investigators revealed that Singh failed to disclose the pending criminal case to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) during his citizenship application process. Under US immigration law, providing false information or hiding criminal activity while obtaining citizenship is considered fraud and can lead to denaturalisation.
The case will now be heard in a federal court, which will decide whether Singh’s US citizenship should be formally revoked. If denaturalised, he could also face deportation to India, potentially even before completing his prison sentence. The case reflects the US government’s renewed push to identify and take action against individuals who obtained citizenship through fraud or misrepresentation.

Baloch Rebels Using US Weapons, Claims Pakistan’s Khawaja Asif

The Pakistani leader acknowledged that Baloch rebels-led by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA)-- were mainly targeting and exploiting Pakistani Punjabis.
Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has admitted that Baloch rebels, who launched a series of attacks in Balochistan province, have advanced American weapons, including night vision devices and rifles, that even the Pakistani Army does not have. The Pakistani minister claimed the so-called leadership of the separatist insurgents is based in Afghanistan, which borders Balochistan, and "they receive support from there." Addressing the National Assembly, Asif admitted that Pakistani security forces were struggling against rebel fighters due to the sheer size of Balochistan province and the advanced technology used by them amid a fresh surge in militant violence.

President’s Rule Lifted in Manipur, NDA Moves to Form Government

President’s Rule in Manipur has been revoked, paving the way for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to stake its claim to form the next government in the state. The decision follows weeks of political consultations and assessments of the law-and-order situation, which had led to the imposition of President’s Rule earlier. Soon after the revocation, senior NDA leaders met the Governor and formally presented their claim, asserting that they have the required numbers to provide a stable government. According to NDA representatives, several MLAs have extended support to the alliance, expressing confidence that a new dispensation can restore normalcy and accelerate the political and administrative process in the violence-hit state.

Pakistani-American Arrested in Serbia in $300M Scam

Hundreds of Gujaratis living in the United States on H-1B visas are facing growing uncertainty due to severe delays in visa stamping and stricter immigration scrutiny. Despite having legal status and stable jobs, many are unable to travel to India, while those who did so for vacations or emergencies are now stuck without a clear return timeline.
Policy changes and mandatory social-media vetting have created massive backlogs at US consulates, with stamping appointments reportedly unavailable until 2027. As a result, professionals have missed funerals, medical emergencies and family functions, fearing that travel could cost them their jobs or future green card prospects.
Companies and universities are advising H-1B holders and students to avoid international travel, while immigration consultants warn against fraudulent agents charging high fees for fake appointment slots. Experts say a “wait and watch” approach is currently the safest option amid the ongoing crisis.

ethnic unrest, administrative paralysis, and the resignation of key political figures, which created a constitutional vacuum. During this period, the state administration functioned under the direct control of the Centre, with security forces deployed extensively to curb violence and maintain peace. NDA leaders have said that their immediate priorities will include restoring law and order, facilitating dialogue between affected communities, rehabilitating displaced families, and reviving development activities that were stalled due to instability. They have also emphasized the need for inclusive governance and cooperation across party lines to heal divisions and rebuild public trust. Opposition parties, however, have urged caution, stating that the formation of a new government must be guided by constitutional propriety and a genuine commitment to peace rather than political expediency. They have called on the Governor to thoroughly verify claims of majority support.
With President’s Rule lifted, attention now turns to whether the proposed NDA government can effectively address Manipur’s complex challenges and provide durable political stability after months of uncertainty.

Markets Rally on India–US Trade Deal

New Delhi: Battered by the budget 48 hours ago, the markets swung violently the other way Tuesday morning after US President Donald Trump announced the longpending India-US trade deal had been agreed.
The Sensex opened over 3,600 points in the green to cross 85,000 after having closed Monday at 81,666.46, and the similarly bruised Nifty50 gained 1,200 points from its Monday close of 25,088.40. At opening all sectoral indices showed huge gains with realty, auto, consumer durables, and IT among the big movers, up 4.47 per cent, 3.78 per cent, 3.69 per cent, and 3.04 per cent, respectively.
Trump’s Claims Stir Concern Over India–US Trade Deal

After months of negotiations, India and the US announced a trade deal, with PM Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump discussing it by phone and posting on social media. Trump claimed India would stop buying Russian oil and sharply reduce tariffs on US products, opening markets in energy, technology, and agriculture, with sales worth $50 billion. Modi confirmed the deal but did not confirm stopping Russian oil purchases or opening agricultural sectors. Analysts warn US agricultural imports could affect local farmers, and the Indian government has not officially responded to Trump’s claims.

Texas Jewelry Fraud: $4M Bond for Gujarati Couple

In Irving, Texas, Vidhi Patel and Nirav Soni, two Gujaratis, were arrested during a raid at Tilak Jewelers, with both facing $4 million bonds, highlighting the seriousness of the charges. Their exact role at the showroom remains unclear. The store is owned by Ajay Soni, though it is not yet confirmed if any action has been taken against him. The raid, conducted on January 29, is part of a broader investigation into fraud and gold-related scams targeting the Indian-American community. Authorities allege that stolen gold was purchased by the jewelers and processed into jewelry. A simultaneous raid on Saima Jewelers, another Indian-owned store, reportedly recovered $3 million in gold. Police indicate that suspicious transactions, including transfers to India and possibly other countries, were part of the fraud network. Investigators are also reviewing customer records to track the movement of gold and money.
The arrested couple’s involvement in coordinating with scammers and processing stolen goods is still under scrutiny. Officials warn that even senior citizens who bought jewelry or sent gold may be questioned. This case underscores the growing complexity of cross-border fraud within the IndianAmerican jewelry business and the challenges authorities face in tracing stolen assets.

The announcement comes amid renewed momentum in India-US ties, shortly after India signed a major free trade agreement with the European Union and following months of stalled negotiations linked to tariffs and energy issues.
Undocumented Gujaratis in the U.S. Stop Sending Children to India

Many undocumented Gujarati couples in the U.S. used to send their U.S.-born citizen children to India at a young age, bringing them back after several years. This allowed parents to work full-time while children were cared for in India. Relatives or helpers often assisted in transporting the children. However, in the past 6–12 months, many undocumented families have stopped this practice due to rising risks. Sources say that immigration authorities (ICE) have started questioning children’s parents and legal status at airports when they return to the U.S., creating fear among families. While there is no confirmed information about arrests, the number of children being sent to India has significantly decreased. U.S. regulations now require written parental permission, notarization, and proof of the child’s birth certificate for international travel, making the process riskier. Many undocumented parents are also anxious about deportation despite their children being U.S. citizens.

Meet Ketan Bhuptani the First Indian American Deputy Mayor of Livingston, NJ
Ketan Bhuptani, the new deputy mayor, is a firstgeneration immigrant who arrived in the United States over three decades ago from Ahmedabad in Gujarat. He credits his background for having an inclination towards community service Livingston, New Jersey a township in Essex County just elected their first Indian-American Deputy Mayor. Ketan Bhuptani, was sworn in earlier this month. His appointment not only creates history but also opens up doors for representation.
Bhuptani began his journey in America in the lofty high-rises of Wall Street. A data analyst working in the field of AI and coding, Bhuptani has been working for more than three decades in corporate America. His joining a public office is a story of his upbringing that emphasizes on giving back.
As an immigrant raising his young family in the United States, Bhuptani’s journey towards civic engagements began organically. He says, “We tried to bring the few Indian families that we had in the county together to form a cultural connection for our kids and then it all also started into looking at the needs of all the communities and seeing where we could help.” His engagement within the community led him to get active into township committees and other civic initiatives such as being a member of the Zoning Board. Bhuptani also started taking active part in the

July 4th Celebration Committee, and before he knew it he began getting more and more engaged in community work.
Being the deputy mayor of Livingston is also a great achievement because Livingston traditionally did have a large Indian-American concentration, like some of the other counties in the state. While a lot of Indian American
physicians and medical workers are employed at the large Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, in terms of residency the city does not have a very large Indian American population. But this is where Bhuptani chose to settle, raise kids and get active within the community. Bhuptani admits that when they first came to this part of NJ, they made special efforts to organize

On creating a presence as a first generation American and winning the trust of people, Bhuptani says, “Anyone who begins as a firstgeneration immigrant in a country

Bhushan Kumar on Director-Led Film Strategy

With Border 2 now released, producer Bhushan Kumar and director Anurag Singh have shed light on a broader creative and business strategy that goes beyond a single film. In an exclusive conversation with, the two spoke about building a long-term association centred on jointly owned intellectual property, co-production, and directors taking on a larger role in shaping film slates.
Bhushan Kumar explained that his collaboration with Anurag Singh follows a model similar to his existing partnerships with filmmakers Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Anurag Basu, where the director also functions as a producer and stakeholder in the content being created.
Rani Mukerji’s
Message-Driven Films Win Audiences
At a time when several young actresses are wary of headlining femaleled theatrical films due to box-office uncertainty, Rani Mukerji, at 47, continues to defy industry hesitation with conviction. The Rs. 4 crore Day 1 opening of Mardaani 3 is not just an opening figure; it is a reminder. A reminder that women-led films are far from obsolete in theatres, provided they are backed by credibility, clarity of purpose, and content that connects. In an ecosystem increasingly driven by spectacle and inflated hype, Mukerji’s continued ability to draw audiences through messagedriven storytelling stands out as both rare and reassuring.
The early box-office performance of Mardaani 3 has once again placed the spotlight on Mukerji’s unique theatrical pull
Trade Buzz: Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947 Set for Big Opening

The blockbuster success of Gadar 2 and Border 2 has now enhanced expectations for Sunny Deol’s next –Lahore 1947. Based on the popular play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, it marks the return of Sunny with his Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) and Ghatak (1996) director, Rajkumar Santoshi. It is produced by Aamir Khan, who also features in the film in an extended cameo. The other actors in the film are Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal. Trade experts unanimously predicted that it’s a film that can work big time at the box office.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi are joining
hands after a gap. That would grab a lot of attention and eyeballs. Rajkumar Santoshi had told me long back that this has been one of his favourite subjects and that he has been wanting to make it for a long time. When a person is so keen to make a project like that, it would reflect on the screen. Moreover, with Aamir Khan as the producer and the creative inputs that would have come in with Rajkumar Santoshi would have been fantastic as well.” Speaking highly of their 100% track record, Taran Adarsh stated, “It has been a hattrick for them. I hope iss baar bhi woh dono chauka maare!”
with message-oriented cinema. After opening at Rs. 4 crore, the film registered a sharp 50% jump to Rs. 6 crore on Day 2, taking its two-day total to Rs. 10 crore nett. The upward trajectory highlights a familiar pattern. Audiences may always rush in massive numbers on Day 1, but they steadily show up when the content resonates.
With Sunday trending strong, the film is poised for a healthy opening weekend despite its serious subject matter and stiff competition. The Mardaani franchise remains a rare anomaly in Hindi cinema. It is India’s only consistently successful female-led action thriller franchise. Playing SSP Shivani Shivaji Roy, Mukerji has anchored all instalments with authority, tackling uncomfortable realities like crime against women and systemic failure. Each film in the franchise has shown growth beyond its opening day, driven by trust both the character and the actor behind it.
The strong opening of Mardaani 3, higher than predecessors and marked by a significant Day surge, underlines how audiences now associate franchise with credibility rather than gimmickry.
In an era where issue-based films often struggle to find theatrical footing, Mardaani proves that socially charged storytelling can still deliver boxoffice momentum.
This audience behaviour has defined much of Mukerji’s post-superstar-era career. Unlike films designed to peak instantly through spectacle aggressive marketing, her message-driven projects have often relied on word of mouth, gradually building scale and credibility.
Vishal Mishra Drops ‘Kya Bataun Tujhe’ From Pagalpan

Known for his ability to translate unspoken emotions into music, Vishal opens the world of Pagalpan with a song that captures restlessness, vulnerability, and the quiet ache of emotions left unsaid. 'Kya Bataun Tujhe' acts as an emotional entry point into the album, offering listeners a glimpse into the inner landscape that shaped the project.

Bhumi Pednekar
on Daldal’s Silent Rage
One of the most daring creative choices in Daldal is its refusal to explain itself too early, a choice that even unsettled interviewer Rohit Khilnani.
“As a viewer, I kept wondering where this character was going,” he admitted during his exclusive chat. “And then it goes somewhere completely unexpected.”
That slow burn is intentional. Bhumi Pednekar’s character withholds emotion, information and reaction until the silence becomes unbearable. “She doesn’t express anything except anger,” Bhumi explained. “It’s like sitting in front of a wall.” This restraint initially made Bhumi doubt herself. “I thought I wasn’t doing enough.”
But the makers encouraged her to trust the stillness.
Writer Amrit Raj Gupta explained why.
“If she feels lost, if she feels blank that’s real.” Daldal weaponizes patience. It allows discomfort to build, trusting viewers to stay. Director Suresh Triveni admitted that even he struggled watching it. “It made me uncomfortable.” That discomfort is the payoff. When the character finally shifts, the impact is seismic not because of spectacle, but because of everything that was held back.
In an era obsessed with instant gratification, Daldal dares to wait. And in that waiting, it finds its power.

Vishal Bhardwaj Slams Arijit Singh’s ‘Unfair’ Retirement

Vishal Bhardwaj took to his social media to share a video from his latest jamming session with Arijit Singh for his next song in O’Romeo, supposedly titled 'Ishq Ka Fever,' recently recorded and sung by Arijit Singh.
In the video, we can see Vishal Bhardwaj singing the verses from this unreleased song while Arijit Singh was recording.
An emotional Vishal Bhardwaj posted the video with the caption: “Hey Arijit… Till a few days back, while we were jamming on this song (you were shooting the video), I didn’t know that this would be one of my last film songs with you. This is unfair… #TakeBackYourSanyaas It’s unacceptable.”
The recently released trailer offers a glimpse into a dark and complex world shaped by ambition, survival, and human relationships, set against Mumbai’s criminal underbelly. Inspired by true events, the film blends elements of romance and action with emotional conflict, a narrative space familiar to director Vishal Bhardwaj’s body of work.
Backed by Sajid Nadiadwala, O’Romeo is mounted on a large scale and brings together a layered ensemble cast including Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah Bhatia, Farida Jalal, and Disha Patani, with Vikrant Massey appearing in a special role. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on 13 February 2026, coinciding with Valentine’s Week.
Presented by Sajid Nadiadwala and produced under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, O’Romeo marks Vishal Bhardwaj’s return to the big screen with a story rooted in real-life inspiration and character-driven drama.

California Tops, Texas Second in ICE Arrests of Indians in 2025

In 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a total of 1,993 undocumented Indians across various states, a sharp increase from just 820 arrests in 2024, according to the Deportation Data Project. Among the arrested, 1,669 had no prior criminal convictions, 535 had pending criminal charges, and 1,134 had no criminal history at all. California recorded the highest number with 643 Indians arrested, followed by Texas with 237 and New York with 115, collectively accounting for more than half of all arrests. In the same year, approximately 3,200 Indians were deported, many of whom were in U.S. detention following border apprehensions. This increase reflects a stricter enforcement approach inside the country, as illegal border crossings have sharply decreased.
ICE has also revoked visas of legal Indian residents, primarily students, often citing minor traffic or regulatory violations to terminate their legal status. Enforcement operations are intensifying even in traditionally Democratic states, with many arrested and deported Indians falling under this category. In West Virginia, ICE conducted a major operation within just 15 days, detaining 650 illegal aliens, including individuals with pending removal orders. Arrests were carried out with local police assistance, using traffic stops and random searches. The ICE crackdown demonstrates its broad authority, allowing agents to arrest even those without criminal records, creating heightened uncertainty for Indian immigrants nationwide.
T20 World Cup: ICC May Impose Sanctions on Pakistan

The T20 World Cup 2026 has become a battleground between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), with the global body now preparing for a meeting that could change the map of world cricket forever. Outside, the clock is ticking: 48 hours remain before the governing body is expected to drop a verdict that might leave the PCB in total isolation. Sources have told that the Jay Shah-led ICC is contemplating imposing severe sanctions on Pakistan after the nation announced a boycott of the T20 World Cup match against India on 15 February, in solidarity with Bangladesh, who were replaced by Scotland in the biennial event. The tension, which had been simmering since the removal of Bangladesh, reached a boiling point on Sunday.
India Targets Manufacturing in 2026-27 Budget Amid US Tariffs

India has pushed manufacturing to the forefront of its budget, prioritising sectors such as semiconductor, biopharma, electronic manufacturing and rare earth, while attempting a tight leash on spending in an external environment rendered hostile by Donald Trump’s tariffs and geopolitical conflicts.
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who presented her record-breaking ninth budget on Sunday, targeted the fiscal glide path, promising
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the budget as “futuristic” and as an “ambitious road map” for “Make In India” and “atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India), referring to the allocations to priority sectors
to keep key metrics such as fiscal deficit and debtto-GDP under check while expanding capital expenditure by double digits.
While industry lauded the long-term vision of the budget, which allocated funds to many schemes that will play out over the next five years, an increase in the securities transaction tax on stock futures and options to curb speculation spooked the stock market. The benchmark BSE Sensex crashed by 1,546.84 points or 2 per cent, its worst performance on a budget day in six years.
The budget offered no major tax changes, with the government having reduced the burden on common people by cutting consumption tax (GST) and income tax in 2025.
India’s Data Centre & AI Push: 21Year Tax Holiday, 15% Incentive

Data centres are infamously capital resources-hungry and require massive amounts of electricity (to run the computers), water (to cool servers), and land (on which to build).
India on Sunday offered foreign companies providing cloud services a 21-year tax holiday in return for setting up data centres in the country, in an announcement designed to boost the growth of the information technology and artificial intelligence spaces. Presenting the 2026 union budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attributed the holiday – and a 15 per cent safe harbour with a threshold of Rs 2,000 crore - if the company providing the data centre services is Indian – to recognising the need to enable critical infrastructure and attract investment. In a press note after the budget was tabled, the government said data centres, particularly those related to AI, "play a critical role in the infrastructure layer of sectoral architecture".
Baloch Rebels Claim 200 Pakistani Forces Killed in Attacks

According to the BLA's claims, more than 200 personnel from the Pakistan Army, police, and Frontier Corps have been killed, and at least 17 individuals captured. The group described these figures as "preliminary and cautious estimates," suggesting that actual losses were higher. These claims have not been independently verified, but Balochistan's Chief Minister, Sarfraz Bugti, said 17 law enforcement personnel and 31 civilians were killed in the attacks. Meanwhile, Pakistan's military said 92 separatists were killed on Saturday, while 41 were killed on Friday.
Two Gujarati Youths Face Deportation in US Fraud Case

Two Gujarati men, Tejas Bhupendra Patel and Navya Umesh Bhatt, are facing potential deportation and serious legal consequences in the United States after being implicated in a large-scale fraud and money-laundering operation. According to FBI and court records, the duo allegedly collected cash and gold parcels from victims across multiple states, including
Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The scheme reportedly involved PayPal scams, fake Microsoft tech support, and cryptocurrency fraud, with Patel and Bhatt playing key roles in handling and distributing the ill-gotten funds.
Investigators have obtained extensive evidence from Patel’s iCloud account, including photos and videos of parcels being collected, opened, and documented. Bhatt, who was in the US on a student visa, now faces deportation after an ICE detainer was issued, while Patel’s legal proceedings continue, with his next court appearance scheduled for February 6. FBI sources noted that both were in regular contact with other coconspirators through WhatsApp, communicating in Gujarati, which was later translated for the investigation.
Authorities warn that if the charges are proven, the two could face long prison sentences. While the recovery of the previously collected cash and gold is nearly impossible, the case highlights the extensive reach of the investigation and the evidence gathered through digital accounts and forensic methods.

Earthquake Shakes Region, No Major Damage Reported

NEW JERSEY - A minor earthquake shook parts of New Jersey on Friday Jan 30th afternoon, according to data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake registered a magnitude of 2.4 and occurred at approximately 3:43 p.m. Its epicenter was located about six kilometers from the community of Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County. Because of its relatively low magnitude, the tremor was brief and did not cause any reported structural damage.
Despite its small size, the earthquake was noticeable to residents across the region. By Friday evening, nearly 200 people had submitted reports to the USGS indicating that they felt the ground shake. Sensations were reported not only near the epicenter

Health Warning Issued After 28 Popular Candies Found Containing Arsenic

FLORIDA - A new report has found traces of arsenic in several popular candies, prompting renewed debate about how food safety is evaluated in the United States. The Florida Department of Health tested 46 candy products from 10 companies and detected arsenic in 28 of them as part of the state’s Healthy Florida First initiative. The program, supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis, aims to examine products marketed to children and increase transparency for parents and consumers.
State officials said candies were purchased both online and from retail stores and analyzed by a certified laboratory using EPA Method 6010D, a standardized test that measures total arsenic. However, the method does not differentiate between organic arsenic and the more toxic inorganic form. Researchers then estimated “safe” consumption levels based on hypothetical monthly and annual intake, using children as the benchmark due to their lower body weight and higher exposure risk. Despite the findings, no recalls were

issued. Health officials emphasized that potential risks depend on how often the candy is consumed, the duration of exposure, and overall dietary habits.
The testing, they said, is intended to complement federal food safety efforts rather than replace them.
The National Confectioners Association strongly disputed the report, calling the conclusions “misguided.” The group maintained that chocolate and candy remain safe to enjoy as occasional treats and criticized Florida for relying on benchmarks that it says do not align with current federal standards or peer-reviewed science. It also argued that risk calculations based on hypothetical annual consumption could unnecessarily alarm consumers. Instead, the association pointed to the Food and Drug Administration’s Closer to Zero initiative and its Total Diet Study, which it says show significantly lower arsenic levels in confectionery products. Florida officials maintain the testing is meant to inform consumers, while industry leaders insist existing science supports the safety of candy when consumed in moderation.
they are routinely detected by sensitive seismic instruments. Quakes ranging from 2.5 to 5.4 in magnitude are more likely to be felt by people, but typically result in little to no damage. While strong earthquakes are uncommon in New Jersey, small tremors are not unheard of. Similar lowmagnitude events have been recorded in recent years near towns such as Califon, Gladstone, Hasbrouck Heights, Hillsdale, and Randolph.
Experts note that the northeastern United States does experience occasional minor seismic activity due to ancient fault lines beneath the region. However, events of this size are generally considered harmless and serve primarily as a reminder that even traditionally stable areas can experience brief geological movement.
NJ Governor Proposes Citizen Portal to Track ICE Activity

NEW JERSEY -New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says residents should document encounters with federal immigration agents as her administration moves to increase transparency and oversight of enforcement actions in the state. During an appearance on “The Daily Show” with host Desi Lydic, Sherrill urged people who witness activity involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to record video on their phones. She said she is working with Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport to launch an online portal where residents can upload footage of such incidents.
According to Sherrill’s communications director, the initiative is part of a broader effort to “protect New Jerseyans from federal overreach.” The governor also said her administration will bar ICE raids from being staged on state-owned property and will publish guidance so residents understand their legal rights if approached by federal agents.

FDA Launches PreCheck Pilot to Boost U.S. Drug Manufacturing
Agency Now Accepting Requests to Participate in Initiative to Enhance Regulatory Predictability and Streamline New Manufacturing Facility Assessment
WASHINGTON, DC -The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun accepting requests from companies interested in participating in its new FDA PreCheck pilot program, an initiative aimed at strengthening the domestic pharmaceutical supply chain. The program is designed to improve regulatory predictability, encourage the construction of manufacturing facilities within the United States, and streamline key aspects of facility assessments before a specific drug application is submitted. FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary emphasized that the program represents a significant step toward restoring pharmaceutical manufacturing in the U.S. after decades of production shifting overseas. He described PreCheck as one of several incentives intended to enhance the resilience and global competitiveness of the American pharmaceutical sector.
Underage Drinking, Guns Found at Bolingbrook Party, 6
Arrested

BOLINGBROOK, Il. - Six individuals were taken into custody Saturday night after a noise complaint led Bolingbrook Police to uncover suspected underage drinking, loaded firearms, and cannabis at a residential gathering.
Officers responded to the 700 block of Hawthorne Court at approximately 9:41 p.m. following multiple reports of a loud party where underage alcohol consumption was suspected. Upon arrival, police dispersed the crowd and encountered Muhammad T. Nadeem along with five juveniles at the scene. During the investigation, officers recovered two loaded firearms and cannabis, prompting the arrests. Nadeem now faces several serious charges, including:
• Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
• Unlawful use of a weapon
• Unlawful possession of a firearm
• Unlawful possession of ammunition
• Possession of a concealed firearm Authorities have not confirmed whether the juveniles involved will face charges, and the investigation remains ongoing. Bolingbrook Police have not released additional details at this time.

The FDA plans to select an initial group of newly built manufacturing facilities and begin PreCheck activities in 2026. Facilities will be evaluated based on how well they align with national priorities,
including the types of products they intend to manufacture, their stage of development, readiness to supply medications to the U.S. market, and the level of innovation in their design.
USCIS Sets FY 2027 H-1B Dates and New Selection Process

WASHINGTON, DC -U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that the initial registration period for the fiscal year (FY) 2027 H-1B cap will open at noon Eastern on March 4, 2026, and remain open until noon Eastern on March 19, 2026. During this window, employers seeking H-1B workers and their authorized representatives must electronically register each beneficiary through a USCIS online account and pay the $215 registration fee per applicant.
Employers who do not yet have a USCIS online account must create an organizational account before submitting registrations. While legal representatives may add company clients at any time, both employers and representatives can only enter beneficiary details and submit the registration with the required fee once the registration period begins on March 4. USCIS will conduct the selection process after the registration window closes and plans to notify selected petitioners via their online accounts by March 31, 2026. Only petitioners whose registrations are selected will be eligible to file an
H-1B cap-subject petition, including those qualifying for the advanced degree exemption.
For the FY 2027 cap season, the Department of Homeland Security has introduced a revised selection rule designed to prioritize higherskilled and higher-paid applicants. If the number of registrations exceeds the annual cap, USCIS will conduct a weighted selection among properly submitted registrations for unique beneficiaries. If registrations fall short, all eligible submissions will be selected.
Additionally, a presidential proclamation issued on September 19, 2025, titled Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers, represents an early step toward reforming the H-1B visa program. Although it does not directly alter the electronic registration process, selected petitioners may be required to pay an additional $100,000 fee before filing the H-1B petition as a condition of eligibility. USCIS is expected to release updated guidance on the electronic registration process ahead of the opening date.
Special consideration will be given to facilities producing critical medications. The program reflects extensive industry feedback gathered during the September 30, 2025, public meeting on onshoring drug manufacturing, as well as comments submitted through the Federal Register. Industry leaders strongly supported early FDA engagement and simplified documentation processes.
FDA PreCheck will operate in two phases. Phase 1, the Facility Readiness Phase, allows manufacturers to receive early technical guidance through preoperational reviews and a facilityspecific Drug Master File. Phase 2, the Application Submission Phase, builds on this foundation with pre-submission meetings and inspections to help resolve issues quickly and accelerate the review of manufacturing information.
New REAL ID ConfirmID Fee Begins

NEW JERSEY - Starting Feb. 1, domestic air travelers in New Jersey aged 18 and older who do not have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification will be required to pay a $45 “ConfirmID” fee.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the fee helps cover administrative costs for additional screening procedures such as database checks, knowledge-based questions, and biometric verification. Travelers should expect the extra screening to take between 10 and 30 minutes.
The fee can be prepaid at pay.gov to help speed up the process, although confirmation is not guaranteed for all travelers. The ConfirmID remains valid for 10 days from the date of travel.
While optional, the TSA warns that travelers without a REAL ID who choose not to use ConfirmID may be denied access through security and risk missing their flights.
REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or identification cards—introduced following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks— continue to be strongly encouraged. Although the original deadline was set for 2008, it was postponed multiple times.
To obtain a REAL ID in New Jersey, applicants must provide:
• Two proofs of residential address
• One proof of Social Security number
• Six points of identification

Congressman Krishnamoorthi Addresses Growing Cost-of-Living Pressures in Downstate Illinois
HiIndia Newsdesk
EAST ST. LOUIS / CHAMPAIGNURBANA / NORMAL, IL — Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (DIL) launched his Illinois Affordability Tour yesterday with stops across the state to highlight how rising costs and federal funding cuts are impacting Illinois families—and to press for solutions that lower everyday expenses and protect opportunity.
“Across Illinois, families are paying more for everyday essentials—prescriptions, groceries, and more—while this administration cuts community institutions and family support systems,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi.
“From East St. Louis to ChampaignUrbana to Normal, I’m fighting these abrupt, often politically motivated cuts that do nothing but hurt our families. Affordability and opportunity shouldn’t depend on where you live in our state or the temperament of the President on any given day.”
In East St. Louis, Krishnamoorthi met with pharmacists and staff at an independent community pharmacy to discuss how pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) inflate prescription drug prices, reimburse pharmacies below cost, and restrict patient choice—putting access to care at risk in underserved communities. Local pharmacies are also working to help patients navigate a changing health care system following Medicaid cuts and the expiration of Affordable Care Act tax credits.
“We’ve been caring for our community

since 1985, and we intend to continue for many years to come,” said Chandler Welby, Chief Operating Officer of Medicate Pharmacy in East St. Louis. “PBM reform is critical to ensuring we can keep providing our patients with the care they need and deserve.”

Feds Issue Alert on Scams Impersonating Prosecutors and Police

WASHINGTON, DC - Federal authorities are warning the public about an ongoing scam in which individuals or groups— possibly operating outside the United States—are contacting Americans while posing as federal prosecutors or law enforcement officers. The scammers attempt to defraud victims by falsely claiming they are either victims or suspects in a fraud investigation.
“These fraudsters are capitalizing on fear and intimidation, because no one wants to be the victim of a crime or the subject of a law enforcement investigation,” said FBI Atlanta Acting Special Agent in Charge Peter Ellis. “The FBI will actively pursue and charge those who engage in this criminal activity.”
“Fraudsters will go to great lengths to steal money from people who believe they are complying with legitimate requests from law enforcement or prosecutors,” said U.S. Attorney William R. ‘Will’ Keyes. “No
one from the U.S. Attorney’s Office will contact a citizen demanding bank account information or money. If you receive such a call or email, contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3. gov immediately.”
According to the FBI, in this scam, criminals impersonate federal agents or prosecutors and reach out by phone call, text message, or email. They falsely claim that the recipient is either a victim of fraud or a suspect in an ongoing investigation.
If you receive such a call or message, do not provide personal information, bank details, credit card numbers, prepaid cards, or money. Federal authorities do not contact victims or suspects to request money or personal identifying information over the phone or electronically.
Tips to avoid falling victim to this scam:
• Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, text messages, or emails.
• Never provide money or personal information to someone you do not know or did not contact first.
• Trust your instincts—if a caller pressures you or something feels wrong, hang up.
• Verify any claims by independently contacting the appropriate law enforcement agency or court.
• If you believe you have been targeted or victimized, file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
Krishnamoorthi visited an independent pharmacy, research hub, and elementary school, all reeling from Trump admin
cuts
of Illinois’ Soybean Innovation Lab to examine how federal cuts to agricultural research and USAID programs weaken Illinois farmers, disrupt food supply chains, and increase long-term costs for consumers. A national leader in soybean research, the Innovation Lab is currently navigating $25 million in cuts from the Trump administration
that abruptly halted ongoing research. “Federal investment in agricultural research has been foundational to U.S. leadership in food and agriculture, creating new markets for Illinois producers and strengthening food systems around the world,” said Pete Goldsmith, Director of the Soybean Innovation Lab at the University of Illinois. “The Soybean Innovation Lab shows how research at Illinois translates into real benefits for farmers at home and resilient agricultural economies abroad.”
Krishnamoorthi concluded the day at Fairview Elementary School in Normal, where he met with educators and community partners to call for the restoration of Full-Service Community Schools and afterschool funding that working families rely on. The Trump administration recently rescinded $55 million in federal funding from Illinois Full-Service Community Schools, which provide afterschool programs, mental health services, and other essential supports to children across the state. Without action, the funding is set to lapse within days.
“Community schools help break down real-life barriers to learning, including food insecurity, lack of clothing, and limited access to basic services,” said Dr. Kristen Weikle, Superintendent of Fairview Elementary School. “These programs support families so students can come to school ready to learn. Continued federal investment is critical to ensuring every child has a fair chance to succeed.”

CBP Unveils Plan for Temporary Pedestrian Facility at Calexico Crossing

CALEXICO, CA — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced the implementation of a temporary pedestrian processing facility at the Calexico West Port of Entry to accommodate increased cross-border travel. The temporary facility is scheduled to open Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 10 a.m. It will be located one block east of the existing pedestrian crossing area and will feature up to eight processing lanes to enhance capacity and improve pedestrian flow. Darren Bailey Refuses to Condemn Killing by Trump’s Federal Agents
CHICAGO, IL — In the wake of the fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026, Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey has failed to publicly acknowledge or condemn the killing or respond to questions about the horrific events unfolding in Minneapolis. Pretti, a U.S. citizen and longtime healthcare worker, was shot during a federal immigration enforcement operation — an incident that has sparked widespread national outrage, ongoing protests, and calls for investigations and accountability from leaders across the political spectrum. In response, JB for Governor Communications Director Alex Gough released the following statement:
“Alex Pretti was killed in Minneapolis by federal immigration agents, and Darren Bailey refuses to even acknowledge it. Instead of answering questions or condemning the killing, Bailey spent the weekend on Facebook Live. During this time, he couldn’t even find it within himself to offer words of support for the family who just lost a loved one to
Snowstorm Tragedy: 10 People Die Across New York City

NEW YORK, NY -At least 10 people have died outdoors due to freezing temperatures following last weekend’s snowstorm, officials said.
“We don’t yet know whether every case will be ruled hypothermia, but we need every New Yorker to be on alert and look out for their neighbors,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday.
The latest victim was a 47-year-old man found dead near Francis Lewis Boulevard in Queens around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Prior to that discovery, police were investigating at least eight deaths involving people found outdoors in freezing conditions. Among them was a man found dead Sunday outside 651 Jerome Ave., and a 90-year-old woman found unresponsive outside an apartment building in Crown Heights. Also on Sunday, a 52-year-old man was found unresponsive at about 10:30 a.m. near 96th Street and 34th Avenue in Queens and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
On Saturday, a man was found dead outside 185-46 Hilburn Ave. in Jamaica.

a heinous act of violence. Illinoisans deserve leaders who will hold those who abuse their power accountable, not candidates whose moral compass points whichever direction Donald Trump tells it to and who refuse to speak out when innocent lives are lost.”
Bipartisan concern over the fatal shooting — which has been documented on video and contested against initial federal narratives of self-defense — has prompted calls from lawmakers for transparent investigations and greater accountability for the conduct of federal agents. Even some Republican officials have described the incident as deeply concerning and urged independent review of federal enforcement actions.
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood, who previously served as a Trump 2020 Illinois Campaign Co-Chair, issued a statement calling the Minneapolis shooting “deeply concerning,” criticism that Bailey has so far not echoed.
While Governor JB Pritzker continues to demand an end to aggressive federal actions in American cities and calls for accountability, Darren Bailey has remained silent on a matter that many voters see as a defining test of leadership and moral judgment.

Indian American Doctor Found Guilty of Tax and Health Care Fraud
BOSTON, MS - A federal jury in Boston has convicted a medical doctor of health care fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the IRS, and tax evasion following a long-running scheme that generated millions of dollars in illicit income.
Announcing the verdict, Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the U.S. Department of Justice said the defendant spent more than a decade hiding income from the IRS while defrauding insurance companies through his medical practice. He emphasized that the physician chose personal enrichment over professional ethics, driving up insurance costs for the public while evading taxes on his unlawful gains. The Justice Department, he added, will continue to pursue professionals who exploit the health care and tax systems.

According to trial evidence, Dr. Pankaj Merchia, a Harvard-educated sleep specialist based in Boca Raton and Brookline, controlled several sleep medicine businesses. Between 2017 and 2019, he fraudulently billed insurers
Dr. Pankaj Merchia, a highly educated physician — put greed over his integrity, lining his own pockets through lies and deceit at the expense insurers
millions of dollars for sleep apnea machines that former patients had not used for years. In some cases, the devices had already been returned, yet he billed hundreds of thousands of dollars per patient. He used proceeds from the fraud to buy a $2.1 million home in Brookline.
Merchia also improperly obtained more than $390,000 from an insurer by submitting claims for treating his own brother. After being warned that billing insurance for family treatment was prohibited, he created a new medical entity under another person’s name and continued submitting fraudulent claims
to keep receiving payments. Prosecutors further showed that from 2009 through 2019 he failed to report over $6.5 million in income by falsely claiming his businesses were owned by a co-conspirator. To mislead the IRS, he fabricated a sham sale of his companies and spread fake deductions over many years so neither party would owe taxes. Merchia was convicted on all major counts and is scheduled for sentencing on April 28, 2026. Health care fraud and money laundering each carry up to 10 years in prison, while tax evasion and conspiracy to defraud the IRS each carry up to five years.
The investigation was led by IRS Criminal Investigation and the Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts, with prosecution by attorneys from the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Chicago INDO US Lions, MIBG Launch Winter Relief in India
CHICAGO, IL -In a powerful demonstration of international solidarity and humanitarian service, the Chicago INDO US Lions Club has joined hands with the MIBG Foundation to launch an extensive Winter Blanket Distribution Relief Program across northern and western India.
As record-breaking cold waves sweep through the region, this joint initiative is focused on protecting the most vulnerable populations, including the homeless, elderly individuals, daily wage earners, and rural laborers who lack adequate shelter and winter protection against life-threatening temperatures. Combating the Cold with Compassion The “Winter Relief Drive” targets highrisk areas where nighttime temperatures frequently fall to dangerous levels. By combining the philanthropic strength and global outreach of the Chicago INDO US Lions Club with the onground logistics and volunteer network of the MIBG Foundation, the program has already reached thousands of individuals in urgent need. Recipients are being provided with high-quality, heavy-duty blankets specifically designed to withstand extreme winter conditions. The effort is not only about physical warmth but also about restoring a sense of care, dignity, and human connection to those facing harsh winter nights without protection.
Kishan Trivedi, President of the Chicago INDO US Lions Club, highlighted the emotional and moral urgency behind the mission:
“Distance does not diminish our duty to serve. The Chicago INDO US Lions

Club was built on the pillar of ‘We Serve,’ and when we saw the harsh winter conditions affecting our brothers and sisters in India, we knew we had to act. Partnering with MIBG Foundation ensures that every blanket reaches

directly into the hands of those who need it most. Our goal is not only to provide warmth, but also dignity and hope during the darkest months of the
year.”
Club leader Deepak Nayak added that the collaboration represents a bridge of compassion between communities across continents, turning concern into concrete action.
Targeted Impact and Ground-Level Reach
The partnership has carefully identified priority districts to maximize impact and ensure equitable distribution. Blankets are being delivered to:
• Night shelters to provide immediate relief for people living on city streets
• Remote and underserved villages where families have little or no access to winter supplies
• Urban slum settlements where temporary housing offers minimal protection from the cold
What makes the initiative especially effective is its timing and delivery method. The MIBG Foundation’s field teams, along with local volunteers, conduct late-night distribution drives so that blankets reach people exactly when temperatures drop and need is greatest. More Than Relief — A Message of Solidarity
This program represents more than seasonal aid. It reflects a shared humanitarian commitment that crosses borders, cultures, and time zones. By combining global support with local action, the Chicago INDO US Lions Club and the MIBG Foundation are creating a model of compassionate collaboration that directly saves lives during extreme winter conditions. With continued support and community participation, the Winter Relief Drive aims to expand further, ensuring that no one is left exposed to the deadly cold.

Education First: Patel Couple Endows Graduate Fellowship at Rutgers
HiIndia Newsdesk
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ –
Biotech executive Dinesh Patel is giving back to the institution where his scientific journey began by supporting a new graduate fellowship at Rutgers University. Together with his wife, Rajeshvari Patel, he has created the Dinesh and Rajeshvari Patel Endowed Graduate Fellowship to assist students pursuing advanced research in organic chemistry. The fellowship will provide financial support to graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology within the School of Arts and Sciences, helping ease the growing financial burden on young researchers at a time of tightening federal research funds. Patel is the chief executive officer of Protagonist Therapeutics, a multibillion-dollar biopharmaceutical firm developing novel treatments for

faculty member Spencer Knapp. In recognition of that formative mentorship, the fellowship will be directed to Knapp’s laboratory. Rutgers says the gift will strengthen research in organic and medicinal chemistry while honoring Knapp’s nearly five decades of service. Over his career, Knapp has mentored more than 200 graduate students and contributed to important work on Alzheimer’s disease, malaria and inflammatory disorders.
“We can never forget how much we benefited from Rutgers,” Patel said, expressing hope that future scholars will receive the same life-changing support.
Rajeshvari Patel, who earned her master’s degree from Rutgers in 1985, said the fellowship is designed to reduce financial stress so students can fully focus on research and scientific training during the most critical years of their careers.
Indian-Owned Curry Corner Serves Free Samosas Minneapolis’ Anti-ICE Protests

Curry Corner in Northeast Minneapolis has closed temporarily but continues to support the community by distributing food to protesters.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – strain as an intensified Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence ripples through immigrant-dense neighborhoods, affecting cultural institutions and small businesses alike.
Ananya Dance Theatre, a well-known Minneapolisbased contemporary dance company rooted in Indian movement traditions and social justice practice, has publicly aligned itself with communities impacted by ICE actions. Using its platform to urge solidarity and vigilance, the company recently called on people to “stay safe, stand up, hold one another,” stating that it stands “in solidarity with our communities” and explicitly calling for the abolition of ICE. The post also shared a federal enforcement reporting form issued by the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, encouraging residents to document ICE activity. The message reflects the organization’s long-standing political and community-focused ethos. Founded by choreographer and scholar Ananya Chatterjea, Ananya Dance Theatre blends contemporary dance with principles drawn from Odissi, Vinyasa yoga, and the martial art Chhau through its signature movement vocabulary, Yorchhā. Chatterjea, a Guggenheim Choreography Fellow and recipient of the A.P. Andersen Award, also teaches at the University of Minnesota. Her work is deeply shaped by the politically charged group theatre traditions of Kolkata, and the company has consistently framed dance as a tool for resistance, healing, and collective action. For Indian-owned small businesses, the impact has been more immediate and economic. Curry Corner, a popular Indian restaurant in Minneapolis, temporarily shut down operations citing safety concerns for its staff amid the ongoing ICE crackdown. In a statement posted on Instagram, the restaurant described the closure as a “very difficult decision” made to protect its team, thanking customers for their understanding and support.
The announcement sparked an outpouring of community solidarity online. Even while closed, Curry Corner has remained active in protest efforts. Owners, staff, and supporters recently distributed free samosas and meals to anti-ICE demonstrators in downtown Minneapolis, stating they wanted to support the community “the best way we know how, with love and food.”
Photos and videos from the event showed customers and staff serving together in a visible display of unity.

ICE Must Answer: Indian-American Leaders Demand Justice for Deaths

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Alarm and outrage are spreading across Minnesota after two fatal ICE shootings in Minneapolis ignited massive protests and drew sharp condemnation from Indian American leaders and political candidates, who say federal immigration enforcement has dangerously spiraled out of control. The latest killing—the second in the state in a short span—sparked large demonstrations across Minneapolis, with thousands taking to the streets despite icy and hazardous winter conditions. Protesters accused ICE of using militarized tactics with little accountability, as anger intensified over the death of nurse Alex Pretti and other civilians.
Saikat Chakrabarti, a congressional candidate from California, responded with blunt language. “ICE is murdering people. And they will only murder more,” he said. “RIP Alex Pretti. Abolish ICE.”
Several members of Congress echoed those sentiments. Representative Pramila Jayapal stressed the legitimacy of the demonstrations. “Peaceful protest is a RIGHT—it’s NOT a crime,” she said. “It’s past time we make these abusive ICE agents follow the law.”
Representative Ro Khanna called for sweeping congressional action, arguing lawmakers have tools to rein in the agency. He urged Democrats to block DHS funding, repeal long-term ICE funding, end qualified immunity for ICE agents, and prosecute those who broke the law, accusing President Trump of the “systematic destruction of the rule of law.”
Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi described the incident in stark terms. “Yesterday’s killing by Trump’s DHS was a murder,” he said, adding that no agency should escape accountability for taking a civilian’s life.
Representative Shri Thanedar labeled the killings “barbaric and unacceptable” and demanded a full investigation, immediate testimony from Homeland Security leadership, and the release of all video evidence. He also called for ICE operations in Minnesota to be halted.
Dr. Nirav Shah, a Democratic candidate for Minnesota governor, said the second killing made clear that the situation is “out of control,” calling for an immediate halt to ICE operations and an independent review of the agency’s use of force.
As protests continued, FBI Director Kash Patel warned of a surge in threats tied to escalating rhetoric, saying public safety and protection of law enforcement remain the agency’s top priority.
