Trump’s Iran Strategy Still Unclear After State of the Union

In a tense global climate, US President Donald Trump offered no definitive signal on Iran during what became the longest State of the Union address in history. With American military power visibly expanding across the Middle East, many expected clarity on whether Washington was preparing for diplomacy or conflict. Instead, Trump left both allies and adversaries reading between the lines.

The current deployment marks the largest US military build-up in the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq under George W. Bush. Yet Trump chose not to lay out a detailed justification for potential military action. His political base — which has long opposed “forever wars” — is more focused on economic concerns and immigration ahead of key midterm elections. That domestic pressure may explain his caution.

Trump has repeatedly said he prefers striking a deal over launching a war.

A third round of negotiations this month is scheduled in Geneva, and diplomats say the outcome could shape his final decision. One official briefed on the process suggested that if Tehran fails to provide an acceptable proposal, some form of military action could follow.

In his address, Trump repeated a central demand: Iran must clearly declare it will never pursue nuclear weapons. However, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said only hours earlier that Iran would “under no circumstances” develop a nuclear

lifting of heavy US sanctions that have battered its economy. Spiralling inflation and currency collapse triggered widespread unrest earlier this year. Trump claimed in his speech that 32,000 protesters were killed in crackdowns — a figure immediately rejected by Tehran as false.

The president also introduced a new warning, alleging Iran was developing missiles capable of reaching the United States. Iranian officials have consistently refused to include their ballistic missile programme in negotiations, calling it a vital defensive capability. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency is deeply engaged in technical discussions, including inspection mechanisms and uranium enrichment limits. Iran has proposed diluting its highly enriched uranium, currently at 60% purity — close to weapons grade. With two US aircraft carriers deployed and diplomatic channels narrowing, the stakes are rising. The key question now is whether both leaderships are prepared to compromise — or whether miscalculation could tip the crisis toward confrontation.

Gates Addresses Epstein Links in Staff Meeting

Bill Gates "took responsibility for his actions" and addressed his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a meeting with staff from his charitable foundation, the organisation said

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates addressed his past association with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein during a staff town hall at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, saying he “took responsibility” for what he called a serious error in judgment.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Gates apologised to employees and admitted it was a “huge mistake” to spend time with Epstein. He reportedly said, “I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit,” and insisted he never met Epstein’s victims, never stayed overnight at his properties, and never visited his island.

Gates said he first met Epstein in 2011, years after Epstein had pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor. He acknowledged continuing contact through 2014, despite concerns raised by his then-wife, Melinda French Gates, who later described the episode as a painful chapter in their marriage. The renewed scrutiny follows the US Justice Department’s release of Epstein-related files in January. Gates has not been accused of wrongdoing by Epstein’s victims and has denied allegations contained in draft emails referenced in the files.

Top General Navigates Trump and Iran Tensions

Top US general Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, has been quietly balancing between advising President Trump and preparing military options against Iran. He has summoned top service officials for sensitive briefings, often outside the usual Pentagon channels, to avoid leaks. While Trump projects confidence in easy victory, Caine has voiced concerns about the complexity, scale, and potential US casualties of any strike, though he avoids direct confrontation with the president.

Caine’s approach contrasts with his predecessor, Gen. Mark Milley, who openly challenged Trump; Caine opts for discretion, providing options without pushing personal opinions. He has orchestrated the largest US military buildup in the Middle East since Iraq while maintaining influence with Trump and navigating tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Caine has taken a low-profile public stance, appearing only for technical briefings and operations updates, including the capture of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro and strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Internally, he advises military leaders to remain professional and nonpartisan, even during politically charged events. Despite pressures, Caine has worked to protect the Joint Staff’s credibility, subtly contesting questionable personnel decisions and ensuring operations remain lawful. His careful balancing act underscores the challenges of serving as the top military adviser in a highly politicized environment, delivering strategic guidance while avoiding conflicts with a mercurial president.

“Caine walks a tightrope, avoiding direct conflict with President Trump while quietly raising concerns about the scale, complexity, and potential US casualties of a military strike on Iran, even as he orchestrates the largest US military buildup in the Middle East since Iraq.”

Larry Summers to Resign from Harvard Amid Epstein Probe

Former US Treasury Secretary and longtime academic Larry Summers is set to resign as a professor at Harvard University amid renewed scrutiny linked to the Jeffrey Epstein files. The move follows an internal review examining past associations and institutional ties connected to Jeffrey Epstein.

Summers, who previously served as Harvard’s president, has faced questions over his past interactions with Epstein after the financier’s 2019 arrest and death. While Summers has denied any wrongdoing, the ongoing probe has intensified public and institutional pressure, prompting his decision to step down from his academic role.

FBI Records Missing From Epstein Files

Among those missing records are three interviews related to a woman who told agents that Epstein had repeatedly abused her starting when she was approximately 13 years old, and who also accused Trump of sexually assaulting her

Dozens of FBI records appear to be missing from the recently released Jeffrey Epstein files, sparking concern among legal experts and journalists about gaps in the investigation. Among the missing documents are interviews with key witnesses, including women who have accused former US President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. The absence of these records has raised questions about whether the files provide a complete picture of Epstein’s extensive network and his alleged associates.

Experts warn that missing records could complicate efforts to understand the full scope of Epstein’s operations and potential coconspirators. Some suggest the omissions may reflect bureaucratic errors, while others fear deliberate suppression of sensitive information. The Justice Department has not provided a clear explanation for the missing files, fueling speculation about transparency and accountability in handling high-profile investigations.

Journalists examining the released materials noted inconsistencies in dates and redactions, which make it difficult to fully reconstruct the timeline of Epstein’s activities and the involvement of others. Advocates for survivors say the gaps could limit justice for victims, while law enforcement officials emphasize the challenges of managing thousands of documents in a long-running, complex investigation. The missing FBI files underscore continuing questions about how the Epstein case was handled and the extent to which all relevant information has been made publicly available.

PM Modi Matches Netanyahu’s Wife in Saffron

As the leaders interacted with each other, a small detail drew Netanyahu's attention. The colour of PM Modi's pocket square matched perfectly with that of Sara Netanyahu's attire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Israel on Wednesday to a warm welcome from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, who were on the tarmac to receive him at the airport.

As the leaders interacted with each other, a small detail drew Netanyahu's attention. The colour of PM Modi's pocket square matched perfectly with that of Sara Netanyahu's attire. He pointed towards PM Modi's pocket square and his wife's clothes.

"That's saffron," PM Modi said with a smile.

Pakistan Warns of India-Israel 'Hexagon Alliance'

Islamabad: Pakistan is rattled by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's pitch for a "hexagon of alliances" with India, with Islamabad calling it an "anti-Muslim Ummah bloc." The Pakistani Senate has unanimously passed a resolution condemning Netanyahu's plan to ally with New Delhi and other countries to counter the "radical Shia axis" of Islamic nations.

The resolution was moved by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan on behalf of all political parties against Israel's policies and actions. PPP is an integral part of the PM Shehbaz Sharif-led ruling coalition. The resolution criticised any attempts to alter the legal or historical status of occupied Palestinian territories, including holy sites, according to a report by The Express Tribune.

Canada Changes Tune on ‘Indian Interference

C"We have a mature, robust discussion with the Government of India on these issues, and we have robust safeguards in place to avoid foreign interference," an official said.

anada appears to be easing its previous allegations of Indian interference ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India, aimed at boosting trade and strategic ties. Officials indicated that the trip would not proceed if interference continued, stressing Canada has “robust safeguards” and a “no tolerance” policy toward foreign meddling.

This shift contrasts with last June, when the Canadian Security Intelligence Service accused India of espionage and involvement in the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India denied the claims, prompting diplomatic tensions and reciprocal expulsion of diplomats.

Carney’s visit, starting in Mumbai and then New Delhi, is part of a pragmatic effort to reset ties and accelerate economic engagement. Talks will cover trade, energy, technology, AI, talent, culture, and defense. With over $21 billion in annual trade and plans to reach $50 billion by 2030, both nations aim to strengthen cooperation while managing past disputes and deepening bilateral relations.

and arms collaboration, including a potential missile systems order. Both leaders emphasized regional security amid Islamist militancy and rival alliances, while advancing trade talks and a free-trade pact. India is Israel’s second-largest Asian trading partner, and Modi stressed the US-brokered Gaza truce as a foundation for stability. Strategic corridors connecting India, Israel, and Europe were also discussed to boost commerce and regional ties.

PM Modi Hits 100M Instagram Followers, First Global Leader to Do So

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed a major digital milestone, becoming the first world leader and politician to amass 100 million followers on Instagram, underlining his unmatched presence on social media platforms globally. He joined Instagram in 2014, and over the last decade his account has grown steadily, emerging as one of the most followed and engaged political profiles in the world.

H-1B Visa Cancelled Over Alleged India Overstay,

Entrepreneur

AReddit user on an H-1B visa said her visa was abruptly cancelled at Abu Dhabi preclearance while returning to the US with her husband in January. She had visited India for two months in November for her daughter’s birthday, combining vacation with limited work. While her husband cleared preclearance without issue, she was stopped and questioned about remote work. Officials said her Labor Condition Application did not authorize working from India, accusing her of “overstaying” and violating US rules. Her visa was

leaving her stranded. Her company’s immigration attorney reportedly advised that remote work from India is not unlawful. The woman said she is under significant stress and is seeking guidance on next steps. US entrepreneur James Blunt described the incident as a “221(i) visa cancellation,” noting CBP officers have broad discretion at entry points. He urged H-1B holders to avoid nonessential international travel, emphasizing that, while frustrating, the cancellation was legally permissible under current US enforcement policies. Blunt added that travelers should carefully plan trips amid heightened scrutiny.

Officials said her LCA didn’t allow remote work, citing a rules violation.

India Key to Middle East Peace: Israeli Minister

Haskel said that "India is part of the good guys. It is a part of the forces that can stabilise. India is a major component of the military effort. I think it has a major role to play in stability, in pushing prosperity and peace in the region."

Astrategic partnership between India, Israel and the United States is essential to ensuring prosperity and stability in the Middle East, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel has said. Haskel described India as “part of the good guys” and a stabilising force, adding that it plays a significant role in regional security and military cooperation. She said India has a major part to play in promoting peace and long-term prosperity in the region.

On Iran, Haskel claimed Israel had initially pursued diplomacy but accused Tehran of deceiving the international community and violating agreements. She expressed cautious support for diplomatic efforts led by US President

Mexican City Plunged Into Violence Amid Cartel Feud

Mexico’s president hailed special forces for capturing the country’s most wanted drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” who died in custody shortly after a firefight in Jalisco. Yet in northern Sinaloa, in the city of Culiacán, the removal of a cartel leader has sparked renewed violence as rival factions vie for control. Paramedics Héctor Torres, 53, and Julio César Vega, 28, described the constant fear on the streets. At a recent shooting scene, a garage owner lay dead, blood spreading across tiled floors, while grief-stricken relatives watched. Torres said the city had never experienced such sustained violence, with call-outs rising over 70% in the past year. Few victims survive, and attacks on schools, hospitals, and funerals have been reported.

The Sinaloa cartel, once tightly united like a family, is now divided by deadly internal feuds, fueled by a billion-dollar fentanyl trade flooding the United States. US President Donald Trump labelled the cartel a terrorist organization, calling fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction and warning of possible military intervention if Mexico failed to act.

Paramedics wear 14kg of body armour to protect themselves, navigating a city deserted at night despite checkpoints and the presence of thousands of soldiers. Kidnappings and brutal

killings continue, with mutilated corpses left as warnings to rivals. Civilians, including children, are caught in the crossfire.

Mothers searching for missing children, like Reynalda Pulido, probe fields for remains, often finding only animal bones, yet continue their relentless searches, treating the missing as their own children. Meanwhile, cartel members continue fentanyl production, packing kilos of powder worth tens of thousands of dollars for shipment to the US, claiming demand ensures the trade persists despite government efforts.

The Mexican government reports progress, including a 50% reduction in fentanyl supply to the US, but the internal power struggle within the Sinaloa cartel continues to drive violence. President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasised the government’s focus on protecting civilians while combating trafficking.

Back in Culiacán, paramedics Héctor and Julio responded to another shooting. Despite soldiers cordoning the area, victims caught in crossfire required urgent care. Both survived, the first lives saved since November, highlighting the relentless dangers faced daily by emergency workers amid cartel warfare.

The city remains gripped by terror, a stark reminder that capturing a single cartel leader does little to quell the ongoing cycle of violence.

Donald Trump, while voicing scepticism over Iran’s intentions ahead of talks in Geneva. According to her, Iran’s leadership continues hostile rhetoric against both the US and Israel, raising doubts about the prospects of a breakthrough. Referring to internal unrest in Iran, she alleged that thousands of protesters had been killed during crackdowns, arguing that such actions demonstrate the regime’s willingness to pursue confrontation. Meanwhile, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Israel, he received a warm welcome from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of the Indian community. Modi also addressed the Knesset, receiving a standing ovation.

The Chinese AI app sending Hollywood into a panic

Anew artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by the Chinese company behind TikTok rocked Hollywood this week - not just because of what it can do, but what it could mean for creative industries. Created by tech giant ByteDance, Seedance 2.0 can generate cinema-quality video, complete with sound effects and dialogue, from just a few written prompts. Many of the clips said to have been made using Seedance, and featuring popular characters like SpiderMan and Deadpool, went viral. Major studios like Disney and Paramount quickly accused ByteDance of copyright infringement but concerns about the technology run deeper than legal issues.

US embassy to provide passport services at West Bank settlements

The US is preparing to start offering passport services in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank for the first time. A statement posted on Tuesday to the US embassy's X account said consular officers "will be providing routine passport services" to US citizens in the settlement of Efrat on Friday. It names another settlement, Beitar Illit, as the location for a similar outreach service in the coming months, saying the aim is "to reach all Americans".

Settlements are seen as illegal under international law. Much of the world considers them to be on land intended for a future Palestinian state and views them as an obstacle to peace.

Tariffs to Replace Income Tax: Trump

US President Donald Trump, in his State of the Union address, said that the tariffs paid by foreign countries will replace the modern-day system of income tax

US President Donald Trump used his annual State of the Union address to defend sweeping tariffs, claiming foreign nations that “ripped off” the United States are now paying billions of dollars. He reiterated his assertion that tariffs could eventually replace the modern income tax system, reducing the financial burden on Americans.

Trump credited tariffs for driving economic growth, boosting revenues by hundreds of billions of dollars, and strengthening national security. He said several countries agreed to revised trade deals and were satisfied, even if they earned less than before.

He criticised a recent 6-3 ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that struck down earlier import duties, calling it “very unfortunate.” Despite the setback, Trump insisted most countries want to maintain existing agreements, warning that new deals could be tougher. After returning to the White House, Trump imposed “reciprocal” tariffs of up to 50 per cent on deficit-running nations and a 10 per cent baseline levy on others, later pausing some measures for negotiations before introducing a new 15 per cent tariff order.

Japan to deploy missiles on island near Taiwan by 2031

Japan plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles to its remote western island near Taiwan by March 2031, its defence minister said, as regional tensions simmer.

It is the first time that Japan specified a timeline for the missile deployment to Yonaguni island since it was announced in 2022.

China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own and has not ruled out the use of force to "reunify" with it. Yonaguni is visible from Taiwan's shores on a clear day, located just 110km (68 miles) away.

Trump Claims Pak PM Said ‘35 Million Would Have Died’ Without Him on Op Sindoor

Washington:

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim that he prevented eight wars during the first year of his second term, including last year’s India-Pakistan military tensions. Speaking during his State of the Union address to Congress, Trump said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told him that 35 million people could have died during India’s Operation Sindoor without US intervention.

Trump has repeatedly credited himself for brokering a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, announcing on May 10 that both sides agreed to halt hostilities after USmediated talks.

India has firmly rejected claims of third-party involvement, stating that the ceasefire understanding followed direct communication between the two countries’ Directors General of

Piyush Goyal: Awaiting Clarity on India-US Trade Talks

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said "as soon as" there is more clarity in the situation at the tariffs front in the US, India will resume trade talks. "As soon as there's more clarity in the situation," he said when asked how soon India will be resuming trade talks with the US. India and the US, on February 22, decided to reschedule the proposed meeting of their chief negotiators, supposed to be held in Washington this week, to finalise the text for the interim trade pact.

Conservative Comment Sparks Backlash Over Remarks Targeting Indians in U.S.

A controversy has erupted after U.S.based conservative commentator Nick Sortor posted remarks on social media targeting Indians living in America, citing a recent fraud conviction to support his claims. Sortor referenced the case of an Indian national sentenced to 18 years in prison in January 2026 in connection with a parcel fraud scheme. In his post on X, he described the case as “breaking news” and alleged that immigrants who arrived during Joe Biden’s presidency were involved in large-scale theft. He further claimed that immigrants often come to the United States not in search of better lives, but to commit crimes. The post, shared on February 22, reportedly received more than 400,000 views, with many users echoing similar sentiments in the comments. Some

called for stricter immigration policies and deportations. Critics, however, argue that such statements unfairly generalize an entire community based on isolated criminal cases. While it is acknowledged that some individuals of Indian origin have been involved in organized scam operations — including call-center frauds targeting senior citizens — community leaders stress that these represent a small fraction of the broader Indian-American population.

The debate comes amid a charged political climate shaped by rhetoric from figures such as Donald Trump, whose supporters have often taken strong positions on immigration. Observers note that Indian-Americans are among the highest-earning immigrant groups in the United States and contribute billions of dollars annually in taxes. Incidents of individual wrongdoing — including past viral shoplifting cases at retailers such as Target — have at times fueled online narratives that critics say unfairly stigmatize the broader Indian community. Community advocates warn that sweeping claims based on isolated crimes risk promoting misinformation and deepening social divisions at a time when immigration remains a highly sensitive political issue in the United States.

Trump Issues “Buyer Beware” Warning

Trump seemed to be complaining about the Supreme Court ruling that while he could still demand countries exporting to the US queue up for such licences, he cannot charge a 'fee'.

US President Donald Trump reacted angrily to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling limiting his authority on tariffs, calling it “ridiculous” and “dumb.” He claimed, without clear explanation, that the decision actually increased his powers and announced on Truth Social that he could use presidential trade licenses to impose stricter penalties on foreign countries, though the court barred charging fees.

Trump criticized the justices, labeling all but three conservative dissenters as “incompetent,” and warned nations that attempt to exploit the ruling with higher tariffs. His posts also rammed into birthright citizenship, claiming the 14th Amendment was intended only for “babies of slaves” and accusing countries like China of exploiting the clause.

In response to the court limiting tariffs to 10%, Trump announced a hike to 15%, asserting it was legally permissible. He emphasized that his administration would continue using tariffs to strengthen US trade leverage, framing the move as part of his “Make America Great Again” agenda.

A British couple, 65-year-old Karen Newton and her husband Bill, spent 45 days in US ICE detention after paperwork issues at the US-Canada border in September 2025, despite Karen holding a valid visa while Bill’s had expired; their road trip through California, Nevada, Wyoming, and Montana to Canada was halted when officials sent them back to the US side and detained them, forcing them to endure harsh conditions including handcuffs, cold floors, foil blankets, no clocks, and separation, with their attempts to self-deport or contact the British Embassy largely ignored, before being relocated to Tacoma Detention Center in Washington and finally released on November 6, after which they returned to the UK, left traumatized and fearful of visiting the US again.

Canada Takes Action Against Mumbai Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana

The Canadian government's move to revoke Tahawwur Rana's citizenship is reportedly not based on terrorism allegations against him.

Ottawa has initiated proceedings to revoke the Canadian citizenship of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, ahead of Canadian PM Mark Carney’s visit to India on February 26. Rana, a Pakistan-born businessman, is in Indian custody awaiting trial for his alleged role in the 2008 attacks that killed over 160 people.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the move is based not on terrorism allegations but on misrepresentation. Rana reportedly claimed to have resided in Ottawa and Toronto for four years before applying

for citizenship in 2000, while investigations found he spent most of that period in Chicago, running businesses. The IRCC alleges he deliberately concealed this, misleading authorities into granting citizenship in 2001.

The matter has been referred to Canada’s Federal Court, which will decide if citizenship was obtained

Prolonged H-1B Visa Stress Leads to Tragic Death of Young Indian Student in the US

Thirty-year-old Shashikant Reddy, who moved to the US in 2018 after completing a double master’s degree, tragically died of a heart attack on February 16, 2026, reportedly due to prolonged stress over not securing an H-1B visa. Despite being highly qualified, repeated attempts to obtain the visa failed, leaving him anxious about career prospects and starting a family. To support himself, Shashikant took up ordinary jobs while navigating mounting financial and emotional pressure, but the persistent uncertainty about his legal status and professional future ultimately took a severe toll on his health.

Shashikant’s parents, struggling to bring his body back to India for the last rites, launched a crowdfunding campaign that has raised $50,000 so far. Entrepreneur Vijay Tirumalai cautioned parents considering sending children to the US without adequate EB5 investment funds, highlighting that only one in three H-1B applicants succeeds and even successful candidates may wait decades for green cards. He advised investing in local opportunities in India as a safer and more stable alternative, given strict US immigration rules and declining job prospects for international students.

Trump says he will increase his new global tariffs to 15%

US President Donald Trump has said he will impose global tariffs of 15%, as he has continued to rail against a Supreme Court ruling that struck down his previous import taxes.

Trump said on Friday that he would replace the tariffs scrapped by the court with a 10% levy on all goods coming into the US.

But on Saturday, he announced on Truth Social that this would be increased to the maximum allowed under a neverused trade law.

Powerful Drug Lord ‘El Mencho’ Dead, Cartel Strikes Back

The Mexican army announced Sunday that it had killed powerful drug lord Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera in an operation that sparked a wave of violence in various parts of the country. Oseguera, the 59-year-old leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was wounded in a clash with soldiers in the town of Tapalpa, in Jalisco state, and died while being flown to Mexico City, the army said in a statement. He had a $15 million US bounty on his head.

Gunmen retaliating for the raid blocked more than 20 roads in western Jalisco state, which includes Tapalpa, with burning cars and trucks. The violence spread to other states as well.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged citizens to remain calm and said the central government was in coordination with state authorities.

India Delays U.S. Trade Talks After U.S. Supreme Court Tariff Ruling

India has postponed plans to send a trade delegation to Washington this week, largely due to uncertainty following a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down tariff measures imposed by former President Donald Trump, a source in India’s trade ministry told Reuters. The delegation was scheduled to leave for discussions aimed at finalising an interim trade deal between New Delhi and Washington. That deal would have seen the United States reduce punitive 25 % tariffs on certain Indian exports

linked to India’s Russian oil purchases to about 18 %, and India commit to purchasing up to $500 billion of American goods over five years. However, Trump responded to the court ruling by levying a temporary 15 % tariff on U.S. imports, prompting India to defer the visit as both sides assess the implications. No new date for the talks has been set, and officials are reviewing the judgment’s impact on the proposed deal. Opposition parties in India have also urged a reassessment of the pact, arguing New Delhi should renegotiate terms given the changed tariff landscape

Trump Administration Targets Asylum Seekers With New Work Permit Restrictions

Washington, 21 Feb 2026: The Trump administration is moving to limit work permits for asylum seekers in the U.S., potentially making it much harder for individuals with pending or new asylum cases to work legally. Under current law, asylum applicants can apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) after 180 days, and permits can be renewed until their case is resolved.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed changes that would prevent EAD issuance for new asylum filings until processing exceeds 180 days. This

could create delays of years, given the current backlog in immigration courts.

The administration also seeks to end automatic renewals and establish stricter standards for existing permits, emphasizing that work authorization is not an entitlement. The new

rules would require individuals who crossed the border illegally to provide full personal information within 48 hours, aiming to prevent false asylum claims.

Critics warn that these changes could force undocumented workers into exploitation while awaiting legal status and potentially accelerate deportations. The proposed rule will be published in the Federal Register, allowing 60 days for public comment before finalization.

Indian-Americans

Criticize Trump, Support Mamdani

A new survey by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace shows most IndianAmericans view President Donald Trump’s second term negatively, while expressing strong support for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani driven by shared political views rather than ethnicity or religion.

The 2026 Indian American Attitudes Survey (IAAS), conducted with YouGov among 1,000 adults, highlights disapproval of Trump’s handling of the economy, immigration, and India-US relations. While Democratic support remains, it has dipped since 2020, and Republican identification has grown slightly, signaling rising dissatisfaction with both parties. Respondents reported frequent online racism and personal harassment, though most still recommend the US for work. Mamdani’s ideological appeal contrasts sharply with negative reactions to Vice President JD Vance’s remarks on religion and marriage, which sparked concerns about representation and belonging. The survey also noted a surge in anti-Indian content online, with the US emerging as an “epicentre of anti-Indian digital racism.”

The Visa Bulletin for March 2026 came with an unexpected relief. For Indian green card applicants, the US State Department’s March 2026 Visa Bulletin shows forward movement in key employment-based categories. According to immigration lawyers this is the first time in years that the EB-2 visa category for India has shown advancement by 11 months. The EB-1 visa too has moved ahead by four months. The update shows forward movement across several employment-based categories and may go on to expedite the process for eligible

India Tariffs at 10% After Court Blow

The White House said that US trading partners that reached tariff deals with the United States after Trump's tariff diktat will now also face a 10 per cent duty, despite the higher levels they may have agreed on previously.

The White House has announced that US trading partners, including India, that secured tariff deals with the Trump administration will now

face a flat 10% duty, following a US Supreme Court ruling that struck down former President Donald Trump’s broad tariff powers under a 1977 law. The court ruled 6–3 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the president to impose tariffs. Despite the setback, Trump imposed an additional 10% duty effective almost immediately, set to run for 150 days starting February 24, with exemptions for sectors like pharmaceuticals and goods under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Defence is also likely to feature prominently, with discussions expected on joint research, military training exchanges, and possible equipment partnerships. The meeting reflects a broader push to deepen strategic coordination and South-South cooperation, while aligning positions on global challenges including climate action, food security, and reform of multilateral institutions.

Neal Katyal: The Indian-American Lawyer Who Challenged Trump’s Tariffs in Court

Neal Katyal is a prominent IndianAmerican lawyer who argued before the US Supreme Court against Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs. Representing businesses affected by the duties, he challenged the former president’s use of emergency powers to impose broad trade restrictions. Katyal contended that the 1977 law cited by Trump does not authorize unilateral tariff actions, a position the court ultimately upheld in its ruling.

Indians Targeted In Texas ‘Housing Scam’ Row

In Texas, sections of Republican supporters and right-wing influencers have amplified allegations against Indian-Americans, accusing them of manipulating housing systems in cities like Frisco and Plano. A video from a Frisco City Council meeting went viral after a woman named Kelly alleged that some Indian tenants were subleasing apartments, bypassing screening processes, and exploiting tax benefits, making it harder for non-Indians to secure housing. She also linked the claims to alleged H-1B visa misuse, accusing certain firms of leasing multiple units for workers. Critics say the remarks are unverified and risk fueling antiIndian sentiment ahead of state elections. Similar controversial comments by other speakers have further intensified the political and social debate around immigration and housing in Texas.

Gujarati Man in New Jersey Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Minor

Tejas Patel, a 46-year-old resident of Woodbridge, New Jersey, has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in 2024. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Patel has been charged with seconddegree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities allege that he first connected with the minor through Snapchat. He was arrested from Secaucus and has been lodged in Hudson County Jail. A date for his court appearance has not yet been announced. Officials also revealed

that Patel was associated with the Hudson County Department of Family Services, though it remains unclear whether he was employed there at the time of the alleged offence or if he has been suspended. Under New Jersey law, a conviction for seconddegree sexual assault carries a prison

term of five to 25 years along with heavy financial penalties. Convicted offenders must also register as sex offenders, which can severely restrict employment opportunities, housing options, and social mobility. Law enforcement agencies in the United States frequently conduct undercover operations to track individuals who attempt to contact minors through social media platforms. Authorities have repeatedly warned parents and teenagers to remain cautious online, as offenders often use fake profiles and deceptive tactics to target underage victims.

Anurag Kashyap Slams Kerala Story

While many powerful individual voices in the film fraternity have been denouncing the blatant Islamophobic tenor of The Kerala Story, the intrepid Anurag Kashyap is the first prominent personality from the Hindi film industry to speak up.

Says Kashyap, “The Kerala Story is bullsh*t propaganda.” Commenting on the viral beef scene from the trailer of The Kerala Story 2 where a woman is being shown being force-fed beef Kashyap added, “Aisa beef kaun khilata hai? Aisa koi khichdi bhi nahi khilata hai (Who feeds someone beef like this? No one is fed even khichdi in this manner).” Continuing further while lashing out at the sequence and talking about the filmmaker, Kashyap adds, “They just want to make money and please everybody; divide people.

on ‘Embarrassing’ South Film Demands

Actor Taapsee Pannu has opened up about some uncomfortable experiences female performers face in the Indian film industry, particularly while working in South cinema.

In a recent discussion on the Shubhankar Mishra podcast, she spoke candidly about how aesthetic suggestions on set at times cross professional boundaries.

Taapsee, who has worked extensively across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi films, said that directors in the South would occasionally ask actresses to wear padded bras during song shoots or scenes designed to accentuate certain physical features. She described how the instruction typically gets passed down on set, from director to assistant director, then to styling and wardrobe teams, and finally to the actress, making an already awkward situation even more uncomfortable.

“Just imagine how embarrassing it would be,” she said, illustrating how a performer might be asked to step away in the middle of a shoot while others watch, all to check whether the change made a visual difference. According to Taapsee, such requests, and the chain of communication surrounding them, can draw undue attention to a

performer’s body rather than their craft.

The actor also reflected on what she described as visible differences in how female bodies are framed across industries.

Taapsee Pannu noted that while South films often focus on the midriff, Hindi cinema has traditionally leaned towards highlighting cleavage. “I have tried to understand this pattern over the years,” she said, adding that such visual choices are often treated as routine rather than questioned. “But eventually, you realise the attention shifts from your performance your body.”

Taapsee emphasised that while glamour always been part of mainstream cinema, there is a fine line between styling and objectification. “There’s nothing wrong with looking good on screen,” she clarified. “But when the focus becomes very specific to certain body parts, it can distract from the character you’re playing.” Her comments have since triggered wider discussions about how actresses are presented in commercial films and whether industry norms need re-evaluation. “At the end of the day, we are actors,” she said. “The audience should remember the performance, not just how body part was framed.”

Farhan Akhtar-Backed Film Beats Global Contenders

India registered a significant achievement at the BAFTA 2026 awards as the Manipurilanguage film Boong won the Best Children’s & Family Film honour. Backed by Farhan Akhtar, the film emerged victorious over international nominees including Arco, Lilo & Stitch and Zootropolis 2.

The win is being seen as a major moment for Indian cinema, particularly for stories emerging from the Northeast. It underscores the growing global visibility of regional narratives that centre on local realities while addressing universal themes. Farhan Akhtar

attended the ceremony along with his wife, Shibani Dandekar.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong is set in Manipur against the backdrop of social and political unrest. The title translates to “little boy” in Manipuri. The film follows a young boy, Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen, who believes that reuniting his family will restore happiness to his mother, Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam. Determined to find his missing father, Boong embarks on a journey with his best friend Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum.

Konkona Sen Sharma on Accused Role

In the new hard-hitting film The Accused, directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, Konkona Sen Sharma plays a gynaecologist accused of predatory conduct.

What makes the film particularly interesting is that Konkona is paired opposite a female actor. She stars alongside Laapataa Ladies actress Pratibha Ranta, with the two playing a lesbian couple. Their relationship is normalized from the very beginning.

It is not the focus of the plot; instead, the narrative centres on the protagonist’s alleged misconduct.

With Konkona and Pratibha leading the film, we see a relationship tested not just by accusation, but by doubt itself.

Says Konkona, “My character, Geetika, is a woman used to control — of her work, her credibility, her space. What moved me was her internal collapse under scrutiny. I’m glad Netflix is bringing a story like this to audiences, one that trusts performance and silence over spectacle.”

Shah Rukh Khan Films Set for Red Lorry Retrospective

The Red Lorry Film Festival, India’s premier destination for world cinema, will present a special retrospective honouring acclaimed filmmaker Pradip Krishen, spotlighting his rare and influential body of work. Titled A Retrospective Celebrating Filmmaker Pradip Krishen, the showcase will revisit three of Krishen’s most distinctive films: In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones, Electric Moon, and Massey Sahib, offering audiences a chance to experience his sharp storytelling. Pradip Krishen remains one of Indian cinema’s most original filmmakers. His campus cult classic In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones, written by Arundhati Roy captured the spirit of 1970s Delhi student life with wit and quiet rebellion. His debut feature Massey Sahib earned international acclaim and launched the career of Raghuvir Yadav, while Electric Moon stood out for its satirical take on post colonial India. Beyond cinema, Krishen stepped away from filmmaking to become one of India’s leading naturalists.

Sunny Deol, Aamir Khan Project Update

Sunny Deol began 2026 with a bang with Border 2 and he’s expected to release multiple films this year, all of which look exciting. The most awaited of them is Lahore 1947. It reunites Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi and is produced by Aamir Khan. Aamir will also be seen in the film in a supporting role and it also stars Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal and Shabana Azmi. Due to the stellar team and Sunny’s booming track record, Lahore 1947 is a film that is expected to set the cash registers ringing. However, as per the buzz in the trade, the makers of the film are looking for a change of title.

“Lahore 1947 is based on the famous play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya’. Since the film is set in the Pakistani city and during the Independence period, the title Lahore 1947 was initially deemed suitable. But now the makers feel that there can be a better title that is apt for the story of the film.”

Producers Guild Advises Legal Route in Don 3 Dispute

The Producers Guild of India has advised the makers of Don 3 and actor Ranveer Singh to pursue a legal route to resolve their ongoing compensation dispute. The recommendation comes after efforts to mediate the matter reportedly failed to produce a resolution.

According to a report by Variety India, the Guild stated that its role in such disputes is limited. With both parties maintaining their respective positions, members of the body suggested that the issue be handled by legal teams through appropriate channels. The development marks a formal step back from informal mediation, indicating that the standoff may now move towards litigation.

Trump Gives Iran 10-Day Deal Deadline

Warns of Possible Action if No Agreement Reached

US President Donald Trump has given Iran a 10-to-15-day deadline to reach a “meaningful” agreement with the United States over its nuclear programme, warning that “bad things will happen” if Tehran fails to do so. Trump made the remarks at the first meeting of his Board of Peace in Washington DC, saying negotiations with Iranian representatives have been constructive but historically difficult. Trump stressed that the US could decide soon whether to pursue military action if diplomacy falters, saying, “You’re going to be finding out over the next probably 10 days. He also mentioned the ongoing talks led by US Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, adding that while “good talks are being had,” reaching a deal has rarely been easy in the past. The comments come amid a major US military buildup in the Middle East, with aircraft carriers, jets and other forces deployed in the region amid fears of possible escalation. Oil prices have risen as tensions deepen. Trump’s ultimatum underscores rising global uncertainty as the world watches whether diplomacy can avert conflict.

India Joins Trump’s

Peace

Board Meeting As Observer

Last week, India had said it was reviewing a proposal to join the Board.

A week after the Ministry of External Affairs said it was reviewing the US invitation to join President Donald Trump's Board of Peace, India attended the new organisation's first meeting on

Thursday as an observer country and was represented by its Charge d'Affaires at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC, Namgya C Khampa.

The Board of Peace had been rolled out by Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month and he had insisted that "everyone wants to be a part" of the body, which could eventually rival the United Nations.

The Board was initially envisioned as an organisation that would oversee the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, as well as rebuild and play a role in the governance of the strip. The US president's ambitions for it have ballooned since.

Officials from nearly 50 countries participated in the meeting at the US Institute of Peace in Washington. Of these, 27 countries.

In Washington, US President Donald Trump renewed his claim that he mediated between India and Pakistan during their 2025 military standoff, saying he threatened to impose 200 per cent tariffs if the two sides did not stop fighting. Speaking at a “Board of Peace” event, Trump also claimed that 11 jets were shot down during the conflict, raising his earlier estimate of seven aircraft. During the event, Trump asked Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to stand as he described his mediation efforts, asserting that Sharif had credited him with saving “25 million lives.” Trump said he warned both Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that trade deals would be halted and heavy tariffs imposed if hostilities continued, adding that economic pressure helped secure a truce.

India has consistently denied any third-party intervention or aircraft losses, maintaining that the cessation of hostilities was reached through direct talks between the two militaries’ Directors General of Military Operations. The confrontation followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.

Ways to Stay Healthy As You Age

How decades of research on heart health reveal actionable strategies to live longer, prevent disease, and improve quality of life

Origins and Impact

The Framingham Heart Study, now in its 77th year, began in 1948 in Framingham, Massachusetts, to identify the root causes of cardiovascular disease. Tracking over 15,000 residents, the study revealed key risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet. These insights formed the foundation for modern cardiovascular medicine and preventive strategies. Over time, the study expanded to include multiple generations, tracking genetics, lifestyle, and environmental influences on overall health.

Expanding Beyond the Heart

While originally focused on cardiovascular health, the study now examines the brain, kidneys, liver, and bones, leveraging modern tools like DNA sequencing, epigenetics, proteomics, and microbiomics.

Researchers follow participants’ full life courses, uncovering how early lifestyle choices influence disease later in life. Findings highlight that genetics are not destiny; lifestyle interventions can extend both lifespan and healthspan.

Life’s Essential Eight

• Healthy diet

• Regular physical activity

• Avoid all forms of nicotine

• Adequate sleep

• Healthy body weight

• Healthy blood pressure

• Healthy blood sugar

• Healthy blood lipids

Following these eight steps reduces risks of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and chronic conditions.

Key Cardiovascular Risk Factors

• High blood pressure (especially systolic)

• Elevated cholesterol and unhealthy lipid levels

• Smoking and nicotine exposure

• Obesity and sedentary lifestyle

• Poor diet

Framingham Heart Study identified these as the “traditional” risk factors for heart disease.

Actionable Lessons for Healthy Aging

The American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential Eight, inspired by Framingham, outlines actionable steps: maintain a healthy diet, regular physical activity, avoid nicotine, get sufficient sleep, maintain healthy weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipids. Implementing these behaviors reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Community interventions, as seen in Finland, have dramatically lowered heart disease death rates, proving that population-wide health improvements are possible.

Future Directions

The Framingham Heart Study aims to continue following fourth and fifth generations, emphasizing early prevention and lifestyle modifications. Combined with supportive publichealth policies, safe environments, and access to healthy foods, individuals can significantly improve their health outcomes, demonstrating that much of aging well is within our control.

115-Acre Vermont College Campus

Offered Free by Entrepreneur Raj Bhakta

POULTNEY, VT – Entrepreneur and Bhakta Spirits founder Raj Bhakta is seeking to donate the 115-acre former Green Mountain College campus in Poultney, Vermont — free of cost — to an organization aligned with his vision of reviving Western civilization and strengthening the Christian faith.

Bhakta purchased the sprawling historic property in 2020 for approximately $5 million, at a time when it had been appraised at nearly $20 million. He is now specifically inviting Catholic institutions, including universities, dioceses, or religious orders, capable of utilizing the campus for religious mission, education, and leadership formation.

Despite ambitious early plans to redevelop the landmark into a mixeduse destination featuring hotels, luxury residences, and a micro-distillery, the campus has largely remained inactive. A recent redevelopment proposal that included nearly 100 hotel rooms and a fitness center was withdrawn last fall,

leaving the Georgian-style campus and its roughly 20 historic buildings without a defined commercial future.

The decision to donate the property comes amid growing financial pressures tied to maintaining the estate.

Longtime Leader Announces 2026 Departure

After leading a historic period of growth and global expansion, Dr. James R. Downing will step down as President and CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in late 2026 as part of a planned leadership transition. Following his tenure, Downing will join the faculty in the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine, a program he helped establish in 2018 to expand St. Jude’s worldwide mission.

Downing, who joined St. Jude in 1986, has dedicated nearly four decades to advancing pediatric cancer research and treatment. Appointed CEO in 2014, he guided the institution through its largest strategic expansion, overseeing nearly $20 billion in investments, major campus developments in Memphis, and the addition of more than 2,300 positions.

A pioneer in genome sequencing and childhood leukemia research, Downing is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and recipient of numerous international honors.

Under his leadership, St. Jude strengthened its global presence through initiatives such as St. Jude Global and partnerships with the World Health Organization to improve childhood cancer care worldwide. The hospital also advanced groundbreaking research programs, including the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project and St. Jude Cloud, now the world’s largest pediatric cancer genomic data repository.

Board Chair Judy Habib praised Downing’s collaborative leadership and global vision, noting his work reflects the humanitarian mission of founder Danny Thomas. ALSAC CEO Ike Anand described him as a mentor and compassionate leader whose commitment helped transform care for children facing catastrophic diseases.

A pioneer in genome sequencing and childhood leukemia research, Downing is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and recipient of numerous international honors.

The St. Jude Board of Governors has launched a global search for his successor, with an announcement expected this summer and leadership transition planned by the end of 2026. Reflecting on his journey, Downing said he remains committed to the hospital’s founding dream that no child should die in the dawn of life.

indicate Bhakta has been spending as much as $2 million annually on upkeep and operational expenses.

Even for a nonprofit or tax-exempt organization, the ongoing costs remain significant. A recently published request for proposals warns potential applicants

to expect at least $1 million per year in basic maintenance expenses, with a more realistic estimate closer to $1.5 million annually to address deferred maintenance and preserve the campus’s functionality.

Epstein Survivors,

Families

To

Trump’s State Of The Union

WASHINGTON, DC -Members of Congress will bring survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse and relatives of a prominent survivor to President Donald Trump’s February 24 State of the Union address, highlighting renewed calls for transparency, accountability, and the release of remaining Epstein-related records.

Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) announced that Haley Robson, a survivor of Epstein’s abuse, will attend the address as his guest. Robson previously joined Khanna, Representative Thomas Massie, and other survivors outside the U.S. Capitol to urge the administration to release the Epstein files and hold those responsible accountable. Robson said she was honored by the invitation, calling it “a wonderful surprise,” and noted she would attend alongside “a man who I have immense

respect and admiration for,” referring to Khanna.

Separately, Representatives Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Suhas Subramanyam (DVA) announced that Sky and Amanda Roberts will attend as their guests. They are the brother and sister-in-law of the late Virginia Roberts Giuffre, whose testimony played a key role in exposing Epstein’s international trafficking network and encouraging other survivors to come forward.

Sky and Amanda Roberts will watch the president’s speech from the gallery above the House floor.

Subramanyam said Giuffre confronted powerful figures long before Congress addressed the issue. He added that the investigation seeks justice for victims and aims to ensure such abuses never occur again. Hosting her family, he said, serves as a reminder that lawmakers pursuing the case remain committed and will not give up.

DOJ Investigation Finds Dozens of Immigration Court Order Violations in New Jersey

NEW JERSEY -An internal investigation within the U.S. Department of Justice has revealed that the Trump administration was responsible for dozens of immigration court order violations in New Jersey over a twomonth period.

According to the review, more than 50 violations occurred between December 5, 2025, and February 12, 2026. The investigation was conducted by Chief of Staff and Associate Deputy Attorney General Jordan Fox, who is currently under consideration to become New Jersey’s next District Attorney following the removal of Alina Habba.

U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz ordered the review after discovering that one of his court directives had not been followed in a specific immigration case.

Out of 547 cases in which immigrant detainees legally challenged their detention, investigators identified 52 violations along with four additional instances of possible non-compliance by federal officials. The violations included missed deadlines, delayed releases from custody, and at least one unlawful deportation, according to the report.

Judge Farbiarz described Fox’s investigation as “careful” and “thorough,” but stated that the findings fell “below the relevant standards.”

“Judicial orders should never be violated,” Farbiarz wrote in his response. “And they very rarely are — especially not by government officials.”

Erroneous Deportation

Highlighted

One case involved a post-injunction removal in which a detainee was mistakenly deported to Peru. Fox’s

report attributed the incident to an “inadvertent administrative oversight.”

Federal officials later cooperated in efforts to facilitate the detainee’s return to the United States; however, the individual ultimately chose to remain in Peru.

The New York Times identified the deported individual as Jorge MoranRodriguez. His attorney told the publication that Moran-Rodriguez decided to stay in Peru primarily to avoid further detention in the United States.

“It’s not that he didn’t want to come back to the U.S. necessarily,” the attorney said.

“We deeply regret all violations for which our Office is responsible,” Fox wrote in a letter accompanying the report. “These violations were unintentional and were immediately addressed once identified.”

Judge Farbiarz has given the Justice Department until Wednesday to submit an affidavit outlining procedural changes intended to improve compliance with court orders.

“We will continue to act with the utmost vigilance to prevent violations, selfreport issues, and ensure compliance with court directives during this

unprecedented period of immigration filings in one of the hardest-hit districts in the country,” Fox added.

Criticism From Officials and Civil Rights Groups

The findings have drawn strong criticism from New Jersey officials and civil rights advocates.

Governor Mikie Sherrill called the violations “entirely unacceptable.”

“As a former federal prosecutor in the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office, this is entirely unacceptable,” she said. “These violations are hurting families — not making our communities safer.”

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey also condemned the findings, describing them as “shamefully unsurprising.”

“This isn’t just inadvertent or sloppy,” said ACLU-NJ Executive Director Amol Sinha. “The Trump administration has repeatedly flouted judicial orders and undermined the integrity of the courts. Behind every violation is a person, a family, and a community — children have been separated from parents, and lives have been deeply affected.”

Iowa Becomes 21st State to Add Sikhism to School Curriculum

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Board of Education has adopted new social studies standards that include Sikhi in the state’s K–12 curriculum, making Iowa the 21st state to formally incorporate the religion into its academic framework.

According to the Sikh Coalition, its education team began engaging with state officials in fall 2025 during the standards review process.

Representatives met with Iowa’s social studies consultant to share curriculum resources and discuss how lessons on Sikhi could align with the proposed updates.

The final standards include instruction on Sikhi in the seventh-grade modern world history curriculum.

Savleen Singh, senior education manager for the Sikh Coalition, called the inclusion a meaningful step forward for Sikh students nationwide.

“After engaging with the Iowa Department of Education, we are excited to see Iowa become the 21st state to include Sikhi in its social studies standards,” Singh said.

“At a time when Sikh students across the country continue to report bullying and misrepresentation in schools, this milestone sends a clear message that our identities and histories matter.

Hindus and Jews Rank Among America’s Most Educated Religious Groups, Pew Study Finds

WASHINGTON, DC – The latest data from the Pew Research Center’s 2023–24 Religious Landscape Study highlights a significant educational divide across America’s religious communities, with Hindus and Jews emerging as the nation’s most highly educated faith groups.

According to the report released on February 19, both communities far exceed the national average in higher education attainment. Approximately 70% of Hindu Americans and 65% of Jewish Americans hold at least a bachelor’s degree — nearly double the rate seen across the broader U.S. population.

By comparison, only about 35% of American adults overall have completed a four-year college degree. The academic achievement of Hindu and Jewish Americans reflects a distinctive socioeconomic profile within the country’s diverse religious landscape. While roughly one in three adults nationwide holds a bachelor’s degree or higher, the rate among Hindus is twice that level, and nearly two-thirds of Jewish Americans have reached similar academic milestones.

The study also reveals considerable variation in education levels among other religious traditions and denominations.

U.S. Catholics, for example, closely mirror the national average, with 35% holding college degrees. However, these figures change significantly when examined through the lens of race and ethnicity.

Among Catholic Americans, 53% of Asian Catholics and 43% of White Catholics possess bachelor’s degrees, compared with only 20% among Hispanic Catholics.

At the lower end of the spectrum, the report identifies smaller shares of college graduates among evangelical Protestants, at 29%, and members of historically Black Protestant

denominations, at 24%.

Even within these broader categories, however, educational attainment varies considerably. Certain denominations demonstrate notably high academic achievement, including the Global Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church in America, where approximately 57% of members hold college degrees.

The findings underscore the complex intersection of faith, immigration patterns, socioeconomic background, and access to educational opportunities shaping America’s evolving religious landscape.

FBI Boston Warns Parents About Rising Violent Online Networks Targeting Children

BOSTON, MS -The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Division has issued an urgent warning to parents, guardians, and caregivers regarding a significant increase in violent online networks targeting children and vulnerable individuals across the United States, including New England. Investigators are currently tracking more than 350 individuals nationwide connected to networks commonly referred to as “764,” along with several related offshoot groups. All 56 FBI field offices are actively involved in these investigations.

“These predators use ruthless tactics to pressure vulnerable youth into producing sexually explicit or harmful material for extortion,” said Ted E. Docks, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Boston. The agency hopes increased awareness will help families recognize warning signs and prevent further

Predators often contact minors through popular online platforms, building trust or romantic relationships before coercing victims into escalating harmful behavior. Victims may be pressured to

create explicit content, harm themselves or others, or engage in dangerous acts broadcast online. This method, known as Sadistic Online Exploitation, may also involve intimidation tactics such as doxing or swatting.

U.S. Temporarily Suspends PreCheck and Global Entry Programs Amid DHS Shutdown

The Washington Post reported that the suspension is part of a series of emergency measures DHS is implementing to redirect staffing resources more than a week after Congress failed to approve additional funding.

WASHINGTON, DC - A group representing major U.S. airlines has criticized the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for providing travelers with little warning ahead of the temporary suspension of its TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs beginning Sunday, as parts of the agency shut down amid a funding impasse.

The halt in the trusted traveler programs will begin at 6 a.m. ET (1100 GMT), following a partial government shutdown triggered last week after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach an agreement on immigration enforcement reforms. “Airlines for America is deeply concerned that the traveling public will once again be used as a political football during another government shutdown,” Chief Executive Chris Sununu said in a statement.

He added that the suspension was announced at extremely short notice, leaving travelers with limited time to adjust their plans. Sununu urged Congress to reach a resolution quickly to minimize disruption.

According to the airline group, a similar shutdown last fall resulted in an estimated $6.1 billion in losses across the travel industry and related sectors.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the agency is prioritizing general travelers at airports and ports of entry while suspending courtesy and special-privilege escort

services.

“We are making tough but necessary workforce and resource decisions to mitigate the damage,” Noem said in a statement provided to Reuters.

The Washington Post reported that the suspension is part of a series of emergency measures DHS is implementing to redirect staffing resources more than a week after Congress failed to approve additional funding.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported in 2024 that TSA PreCheck had more than 20 million active members. Overall participation in DHS trusted traveler programs — including Global Entry — exceeded 40 million vetted airline passengers.

TSA PreCheck allows approved travelers to use expedited airport security lanes designed to reduce wait times and streamline screening procedures.

Global Entry enables pre-approved, low-risk international travelers to clear U.S. customs and immigration faster upon arrival in the United States.

The latest action follows a directive issued last week by the Trump administration ordering another DHS agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to suspend deployment of certain aid workers to disasteraffected areas during the shutdown.

Many offenders are linked to Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE), an ideology promoting chaos and societal harm, although motivations may also include sexual gratification or social status. Victims are frequently girls aged 10–17 who may struggle with mental health challenges or lack strong support systems.

Warning signs include sudden behavioral changes, withdrawal, selfharm injuries, unexplained gifts, unusual communications, or personal information posted online.

The FBI advises parents to closely monitor online activity, use parental controls, limit personal information sharing, update devices regularly, and maintain open conversations with children about online safety.

Suspected cases should be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, local law enforcement, or emergency services if immediate danger exists.

Praises Harmeet Dhillon at White House

WASHINGTON, DC– President Donald Trump marked Black History Month at the White House, highlighting his record on criminal justice reform, the economy, and public safety, while also praising Harmeet Kaur Dhillon during the event.

The President began by paying tribute to veteran civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, saying, “He was a piece of work, but he was a good man. I just want to pay my highest respects to Reverend Jesse Jackson.”

As he acknowledged a long list of guests and officials, Trump referred to ongoing legal battles involving Harvard and other institutions, adding, “Harmeet is on their trail, right?” in reference to Dhillon, who serves as the US Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.

Dhillon previously served as vice chair of the California Republican Party and as the Republican National Committeewoman for California.

For Indian audiences, Dhillon’s mention at a White House event highlights the growing presence of Indian Americans in influential roles across US administrations, including in sensitive areas such as civil rights enforcement.

Sikh Man Missing from Gurudwara in CA; Kidnapping Probe Underway

TRACY, CA- The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the disappearance of a 57-year-old Sikh man from a gurdwara in Tracy after surveillance footage suggested he may have been taken from the property against his will.

Avtar Singh was reported missing on the night of February 17 after deputies responded to the 16000 block of West Grant Line Road at approximately 8:52 p.m., according to authorities. However, investigators say video footage recorded earlier that afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., has become a key part of the investigation.

Officials said surveillance video shows Singh standing near a white SUV with three unidentified individuals dressed in dark clothing. The footage indicates Singh was placed inside the vehicle before it left the area. Detectives are currently reviewing the video to identify those involved.

Authorities stated the case is being investigated both as a missing person case and a possible kidnapping. Singh is described as approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing light-colored traditional

San Diego Center Celebrates 25 Years of Swami Chinmayananda’s Vision

SAN DIEGO, CA – Vibrant celebrations marked a milestone year at Chinmaya Mission San Diego earlier this month as the spiritual organization commemorated its 25th anniversary in a city revered by devotees worldwide. San Diego holds a special place in the history of the Chinmaya Mission. It was here that founder Swami Chinmayananda attained Mahasamadhi on August 3, 1993 — a moment devotees regard as spiritually transformative for the city. In the years that followed, longtime devotee Lakshmi Sukumar reflected on the absence of Mission activities in San Diego despite its profound spiritual significance. When she shared her thoughts with senior monk Swami Shantananda in New Jersey, he revealed that he had made a resolve at his guru’s bedside that a center

would one day arise there. That vision became reality on January 28, 2001, with the inauguration of Chinmaya Mission San Diego and the lighting of the Chinmaya lamp. More than a decade later, the Chinmaya Jyoti Center was formally inaugurated on August 3, 2013.

The silver jubilee celebrations coincided with the 75th year of the global Chinmaya Movement, creating an auspicious milestone. The observances culminated in a weeklong Jnana Yajna, “Bhagavad Gita Saptah,” conducted by Swami Shantananda from January 27 to February 1, 2026.

The Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Yatra began with a ceremonial procession escorting a life-size portrait of Swami Chinmayananda into the ashram, accompanied by the CMSD Youth Band and traditional lezim dancers. Rituals included Jyoti lighting, Guru Paduka worship and Sri Krishna pujas. Over six days, Swami Shantananda unfolded selected Bhagavad Gita verses through insightful discourses. The celebrations concluded with “Sankhya Mahima in Sanatana Dharma,” a devotional presentation led by Lakshmi Sukumar, followed by the release of the commemorative souvenir, Sankalpa to Sthāpanā, honoring the Mission’s journey and future vision.

The racist implication was quite clear and Pooja Sethi, the Democrat candidate for Texas House District 47, had a response for Hernandez. Sethi reposted with the caption: “My heritage isn’t an insult. It’s my story. And like millions of Americans, it’s rooted in hard work, faith in this country, and service to our community. If that bothers you, that says more about you than it does about me.”

Authorities added that, based on available information, the incident appears to be isolated and there is no known ongoing threat to the community.

Pooja Sethi serves as the Chief of Staff to Texas State Representative Vikki Goodwin and is Chair of the Travis County Democratic Party. With nearly four years of experience in the Texas Legislature, she brings a rare combination of legal expertise, political leadership, and lived experience to legislative strategy, policy development, and constituent advocacy.

Jivrajka Family Gifts $2M for Heart Research Chair at UCLA

LOS ANGELES, CA- UCLA

Health has received a $2 million philanthropic gift from the Jivrajka Family Foundation to establish an endowed chair dedicated to cardiovascular disease prevention, with a special focus on South Asian and other high-risk populations.

The funding will support translational research, clinical education, and community outreach programs aimed at improving prevention strategies for communities facing elevated cardiovascular risk.

Individuals of South Asian descent are more likely to develop conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol at an earlier age and often experience heart disease up to a decade sooner than other populations. South Asians account for more than half of cardiovascular-related deaths worldwide.

Dr. Ravi H. Dave, director of Interventional Cardiology and the UCLA Health South Asian Heart Program, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Jivrajka Family Foundation Chair. He also leads the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program within the UCLA Division of Cardiology.

The endowed chair will support research into genetic and environmental factors contributing to cardiovascular disease in high-risk populations while strengthening efforts to expand access to care and develop culturally informed treatment approaches.

“This chair supports the division’s efforts to develop individualized approaches for high-risk patients with coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular conditions; build a research team to better understand genetic and environmental risk factors; and advance targeted cardiovascular therapies, including holistic care approaches,” said Dr. Priscilla Hsue, chief of the UCLA Division of Cardiology.

The gift will also support long-term academic and clinical initiatives at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

“UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine are grateful for the generosity and vision of the Jivrajka Family Foundation and its president, Dr. Vinod Jivrajka,” said Dr. Steven Dubinett, dean of the medical school. “Their support will improve cardiovascular health, care, and quality of life for at-risk populations.”

FBI Alerts on Growing Online Child Exploitation

BOSTON, MS - The FBI has issued a serious warning about the growing threat posed by violent online networks targeting children and vulnerable individuals across the United States. Authorities report a sharp increase in activity linked to groups commonly referred to as “764,” along with several related offshoot networks operating under different names.

According to the FBI, members of these networks use mobile messaging apps, social media platforms, and online gaming communities to contact young victims. Predators often build trust or form fake romantic relationships before manipulating or coercing victims into sharing explicit content, engaging in self-harm, or participating in violent or degrading acts. This disturbing pattern is known as “Sadistic Online Exploitation.”

Investigators say some offenders go further by livestreaming acts of selfharm and using tactics such as doxing and swatting to intimidate and control victims. Officials warn that many perpetrators are males under the age of 25 and come from diverse backgrounds.

FBI Chicago Warns Public About Imposters Posing as Federal Law Enforcement Officers

CHICAGO, IL -The Chicago Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning the public about individuals impersonating federal law enforcement officers in an effort to defraud victims of money and steal personally identifiable information. FBI Chicago has released photographs of two individuals suspected of carrying out this scheme and is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying them. “Criminals who commit these offenses cause lasting harm that extends far beyond financial losses,” said FBI Chicago Special Agent in Charge Douglas S. DePodesta. “By posing as law enforcement officers, they undermine the public trust our agencies depend upon to protect and serve communities. The FBI and our partners will pursue every available avenue to hold offenders accountable and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”

Fraudsters posing as law enforcement officers have contacted unsuspecting members of the public, falsely claiming they are suspects or victims in fraud investigations. These communications typically occur through text messages, phone calls, or emails, and offenders are

often located outside the United States. Recent reports indicate that scammers have created elaborate fraudulent scenarios, including impersonating bank employees who claim to be working alongside legitimate FBI agents, in order to obtain victims’ personal and financial information.

The FBI urges the public to remain

vigilant and exercise caution when communicating with anyone claiming to represent federal law enforcement. Federal authorities will never request money or personal identifying information when contacting victims or suspects online or over the phone. If you or someone you know receives a call, text message, or email from an individual claiming to be a federal law

FDA Approves First-of-Its-Kind Device for Advanced Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a first-of-its-kind medical device for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The device, Optune Pax, developed by Novocure, is a portable and noninvasive therapy that delivers alternating electrical fields — known as tumor treating fields (TTFields) — to the abdomen.

TTFields work by physically disrupting the rapid cell division characteristic of cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.

“Having treated many patients with pancreatic cancer, I know how difficult this diagnosis can be. The pancreatic cancer community deserves better therapeutic options,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “The FDA is working tirelessly to bring potentially promising therapies to people who need them.”

The approval reflects the FDA’s ongoing commitment to advancing safe and effective medical devices that address chronic diseases and improve patient outcomes. It also aligns with the agency’s Home as a Health Care Hub Initiative, which promotes innovative, patient-centered technologies designed to integrate more seamlessly into daily life at home.

“Pancreatic cancer is one of the most challenging cancers to treat, and patients have long needed new therapeutic

options,” said Michelle Tarver, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

“This approval introduces a novel, noninvasive treatment approach that can be incorporated into patients’ everyday routines, expanding access to cancer care beyond traditional clinical settings.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, pancreatic cancer was projected to account for approximately 67,440 new diagnoses and 51,980 deaths in the United States in 2025. Although it represents only about 3.3% of all new cancer cases, pancreatic cancer contributes disproportionately to cancer-related deaths due to late detection, aggressive progression, and limited treatment options.

The therapy is administered using electrically insulated adhesive patches placed on the patient’s skin and connected to an electric field generator. Treatment parameters are preset by the manufacturer and cannot be adjusted by patients or physicians.

Patients receive training on device use, including battery replacement and recharging, connecting the device to an external power supply, proper placement of adhesive patches, and replacing transducer arrays at least twice per week. The generator is carried in a specially designed bag, allowing patients to receive continuous treatment while maintaining normal daily activities.

Optune Pax received approval through the FDA’s Premarket Approval (PMA) pathway — the agency’s most rigorous review process for medical devices. Approval was based on data from a pivotal clinical study conducted under an Investigational Device Exemption. The randomized, controlled study followed adult patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer for up to five years.

Study results showed that adding TTFields therapy to standard chemotherapy treatments — gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel (GnP) — improved overall survival by approximately two months compared with chemotherapy alone. Localized skin reactions were the most commonly reported device-related side effect.

The FDA previously granted Breakthrough Device designation to Optune Pax in December 2024, a program designed to accelerate the development and review of devices that offer more effective treatment or diagnosis for life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating conditions.

Public Safety Guidance

The FBI encourages the public to follow these safety precautions:

• Be cautious of unsolicited calls, text messages, or emails.

• Trust your instincts. If someone pressures you to act immediately or makes claims that seem suspicious, end communication and save the correspondence as evidence.

• Independently verify claims by contacting the appropriate law enforcement agency, bank, or company using publicly available contact information — not information provided by the caller.

• Avoid sharing money or personal information with individuals you did not initiate contact with or cannot independently verify.

• To report fraud or assist in bringing offenders to justice, the public is encouraged to file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

DHS Proposes Stricter Rules to Curb Asylum Fraud

WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed a new rule intended to reduce incentives for individuals to file fraudulent asylum claims in order to obtain work authorization in the United States.

“For too long, fraudulent asylum claims have served as an easy pathway to employment authorization, overwhelming our immigration system with meritless applications,” a DHS spokesperson said. “We are proposing a comprehensive overhaul of the asylum process to enforce existing laws and reduce the backlog inherited from the prior administration. Individuals are not automatically entitled

Applications for employment authorization based on pending asylum claims have reached historic levels, placing significant strain on U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) resources. USCIS currently has more than 1.4 million pending affirmative asylum applications — roughly equal to the entire population of the state of New Hampshire. If finalized, the proposed rule would reduce incentives to file frivolous, fraudulent, or otherwise meritless asylum claims by revising filing and eligibility requirements for employment authorization requests tied to pending asylum applications. DHS intends to redirect limited agency resources toward adjudicating asylum cases more efficiently, addressing backlog cases, and prioritizing individuals genuinely seeking protection

NYC Cracks Down on Hidden Gym Fees

NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani, along with the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), has launched a citywide compliance effort targeting gyms and health clubs over membership cancellation practices.

The proposed regulation supports President Trump’s Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion.

Changes to work permits would reduce meritless applications, processing times, and backlog

broader crackdown on hidden junk fees and subscription traps. “New Yorkers shouldn’t need a personal trainer to cancel a gym membership,” Mamdani said. “If a company makes it easy to sign up but nearly impossible to walk away, we will enforce the law and protect your time and your money.”

Consumers have frequently reported being required to navigate complicated cancellation procedures. Common complaints include promotional offers advertised as free that later result in unexpected charges, as well as administrative hurdles that delay or prevent cancellation requests. According to the DCWP, numerous consumer complaints were filed in 2025 regarding difficulties canceling gym memberships.

Mayor Mamdani’s executive order mandates the department to monitor, investigate, and enforce violations related to subscription traps — including any business practices intentionally designed to make canceling memberships or subscriptions difficult for consumers.
