US Court Lets Trump End Deportation Protections
Afederal appeals court on Wednesday cleared the way for President Donald Trump's administration to end temporary deportation protections and cancel work permits for more than 60,000 immigrants from Central America and Nepal.
The ruling by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit allows the government to end Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from Nicaragua, Honduras and Nepal while a court challenge to that policy plays out.
The three judges who signed the order did not provide legal reasoning.
Haley Pushes TrumpPM Modi Meet on India-US Ties
Washington: Calling the partnership between India and the US a "no-brainer" to counter China, Donald Trump's Republican colleague, Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley, said it would be a "massive mistake" on Washington's part to let the trade spat with New Delhi escalate into "an enduring rupture." In a Newsweek op-ed published Wednesday, she warned that any crack in the India-US ties will give an opportunity to the Chinese Communist Party to play New Delhi and Washington against one another. The former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said America's top priority should be to get India-US ties back on track, as she called for a direct meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The order immediately ends protections for Nepalis, which expired on August 5. Protections for Hondurans and Nicaraguans will expire on September 8.
US Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that the decision will help restore integrity to the immigration system and stop Temporary Protected Status from being used as a "de facto asylum system."
Ahilan Arulanantham of the UCLA Center for Immigration Law and Policy, one of the groups that filed the lawsuit, criticized the court for not providing reasoning and said the decision "simply sanctions the government's power grab."
US Conducts Raid in Northern
Syria Against IS
Atmeh:
US forces took part in a pre-dawn raid in northwestern Syria early on Wednesday that targeted a member of the Islamic State group, a US official and a Syrian security source said.
A second Syrian security source and Syria's stateowned Al-Ikhbariya said the target was killed as he tried to escape.
It was the second known raid in northern Syria by US troops since former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December. The Islamist-led government that replaced him has pledged to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State and is part of an anti-IS alliance that includes the US-led coalition fighting the group.
Elon Musk must face lawsuit claiming he ran illegal $1 million election lottery
Elon Musk was ordered on Wednesday by a federal judge to face a lawsuit by voters accusing the world's richest person of defrauding them into signing a petition to support the U.S. Constitution for a chance to win his $1 million-a-day giveaway.
U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin, Texas said Jacqueline McAferty plausibly alleged in her proposed class action that Musk and his political action committee America PAC wrongly induced her to provide personal identifying information as part of the giveaway, late in the 2024 election campaign.
successful 2024 presidential run. McAferty, an Arizona resident, said Musk and America PAC induced voters in seven battleground states to sign his petition by promising that $1 million recipients would be chosen randomly, as in a lottery, though the voters had no real chance to collect.
She said voters who signed were also required to provide names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. In seeking a dismissal, Musk listed several "red flags" as proof he had not run an illegal lottery.
Top US spy Gabbard announces staff cut of over 40% from her office
WASHINGTON: - U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Wednesday announced the first major overhaul of her office since its creation, slashing personnel by more than 40% by October 1 and saving more than $700 million per year.
Among other changes, the restructuring eliminates the Foreign Malign Influence Center, which monitors foreign efforts to influence the American public. A fact sheet said that function was already performed by other U.S. intelligence units.
The Trump administration has sought to shrink the federal bureaucracy and has made sweeping cuts to a number of agencies. Gabbard's announcement also comes as she accuses former intelligence officials and others of involvement in what she says was a manufactured and politicized assessment that Russia sought to influence the 2016 presidential vote in U.S. President Donald Trump's favor.
US Navy sailor convicted of spying for China
A US Navy sailor in California has been convicted of espionage for selling secrets to a Chinese agent who recruited him through social media.
Jinchao Wei, 25, was convicted of six charges, including espionage, conspiracy to commit espionage and unlawful export of classified data about US Navy ships. He was paid more than $12,000 (£8,920) over an 18-month period by a Chinese intelligence officer who approached him in February 2022 for information about the USS Essex, which he served on, as well as other naval vessels.
Federal Health Workers Slam RFK Jr. Over Public Safety
Lawyers for Musk and America PAC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk founded America PAC to support Republican Donald Trump's
He said these included statements that the $1 million recipients were "selected to earn" the money and expected to become America PAC spokespeople, defeating the idea that the payment was a "prize."
More than 750 current and former employees of the US health department have published a letter rebuking Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, saying his "dangerous and deceitful statements" contributed to recent violence at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters.Officials say the man who fired hundreds of rounds at the CDC this month, killing a police officer, had expressed distrust in the Covid-19 vaccine.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, earlier this month, said that his country intended to take full military control of the Gaza Strip to dismantle Hamas. Speaking in a Fox News interview, he said the aim was to secure Israel, remove Hamas, and eventually transfer
governance to civilian Arab authorities. The offensive, named "Gideon's Chariots B," follows an earlier operation that secured 75% of the Gaza Strip. Preparations are already underway, with the Nahal Infantry Brigade and 7th Armoured Brigade operating in the Zeitoun neighbourhood, and the Givati Infantry Brigade active in Kafr Jabalia.

Denmark scraps book tax to fight 'reading crisis'
The Danish government has announced it will abolish a 25% sales tax on books, in an effort to combat a "reading crisis".
The tax is is one of the highest in the world. Culture Minister Jacob EngelSchmidt says he hopes scrapping it will lead to more books flying off the shelves. The measure is expected to cost about
330 million kroner ($50m, £38m) a year.
Data from the OECD, an intergovernmental think tank, shows that a quarter of Danish 15-year-olds cannot understand a simple text.
"The reading crisis has unfortunately been spreading in recent years," said Engel-Schmidt. He added that he was "incredibly proud" of the move to scrap the tax.
He said "massive money should be spent on investing in the consumption and culture" of the Danish people.
In Finland, Sweden and Norway - which also have a standard Value Added Tax (VAT) of 25% like Denmark - the VAT on books is 14%, 6% and 0% respectively.
In the UK, books are also VAT-free.

FBI Alerts on Russian Cyberattacks
Hackers associated with some of Russia's most prolific cyber espionage units have over the last year been leveraging a vulnerability in older Cisco software to target thousands of networking devices associated with critical infrastructure IT systems, the FBI and Cisco said on Wednesday.
Hackers working within the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Center 16 are extracting "device configuration information en masse, which can later be leveraged as needed based on then-current strategic goals and interests of the Russian government," Cisco Talos researchers Sara McBroom and Brandon White wrote in a threat advisory published to the company's blog.
In a separate advisory, the FBI said that over the last year it had detected the hackers collecting configuration files "for thousands of networking devices associated with U.S. entities across critical infrastructure sectors."
In some cases the configuration files are modified to enable long-term access for the hackers, who use that access to conduct reconnaissance in targeted networks, with a particular interest in industrial control systems.
Netanyahu accuses Australian PM of 'betraying' Israel
Israel's prime minister has accused his Australian counterpart of having "betrayed Israel" and "abandoned" Australia's Jewish community, after days of growing strain between the two countries.
Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that history would remember Anthony Albanese "for what he is: a weak
politician". Australia barred a far-right member of Netanyahu's ruling coalition from entering the country on Monday, and Israel in turn revoked the visas of Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority.
Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke said Netanyahu was "lashing out" over Canberra recently announcing it would join the UK, France and Canada in recognising a Palestinian state. "Strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up or how many people you can leave hungry," Burke told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Wednesday. Albanese later told reporters he does not "take these things personally".

Trump Eyes Intel Stake for U.S.
New Delhi, August 2025 – In an unconventional move, President Donald Trump is proposing that the U.S. government acquire a 10% equity stake in Intel, converting previously pledged grants under the Biden-era CHIPS and Science Act into investment rather than one-way subsidies.
The strategy underscores a broader push for greater domestic semiconductor production, aimed at reducing reliance on foreign suppliers—particularly amid escalating tensions with China. The planned stake would be held in non-voting shares, according to reports, ensuring no direct influence over Intel’s corporate governance.
Last £1 Coins with Queen Enter Circulation
Support for the plan extends beyond party lines. Senator Bernie Sanders backed the initiative, stating it ensures
taxpayers see returns on federal investments in the tech sector—a view he has previously championed. However, market experts have voiced caution. They warn of risks including shareholder dilution, politicization of corporate strategy, and inflated stock
The last batch of £1 coins bearing the face of the late Queen Elizabeth II is entering circulation, with more than 23 million of them destined for tills and people's pockets.
The Royal Mint said the release of the final Elizabeth II coins, dated 2021 and 2022, marks "a pivotal moment in British coinage history".
Alongside them, a further 7.5m new King Charles III coins are also entering circulation. His face has been seen on UK coins since 2023, but only on £1 and 50p denominations so far.
Walmart Shrimp Recall Over Radioactivity
Walmart has recalled some of its shrimp products in the US after radioactive material was detected in a shipment of seafood.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public not to eat frozen shrimp sold under Walmart's Great Value label could have been exposed to a dangerous isotope in shipping containers.
One sample of breaded shrimp tested positive for the substance, the FDA said, but this positive sample "did not enter US commerce".
U.S. President Donald Trump wants the U.S. government to own a piece of Intel, less than two weeks after demanding the Silicon Valley pioneer dump CEO Lip-Bu Tan
valuations following the company’s recent rally. Intel’s stock, buoyed by the news and a concurrent $2 billion investment from SoftBank, surged—yet analysts question whether financial backing alone can remedy the company’s entrenched technological lag As a potential precedent for deeper industrial policy, the proposal signals a dramatic shift from traditional market-driven support to more direct government ownership in critical technology sectors.
Indian Tycoons Seek Govt Help After Trump Tariffs
India’s leading business figures are calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as the economy reels from U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump.
Uday Kotak, founder of India’s thirdlargest private sector bank, described the tariffs as a “major shock” that had “woken Indians up” to the risks posed by global trade tensions. Kotak’s
warnings echo similar calls from other industrial leaders. Anand Mahindra, ofthe Mahindra Group, also called for the need for increased liquidity for SMEs, investment in infrastructure, and incentives for domestic manufacturers. Harsh Goenka, chair of RPG Enterprises, added that the government should create a fund to help exporters find new markets and encourage manufacturing relocation from China to India. The push comes after Trump announced an additional 25 percent levy on certain Indian imports, including discounted Russian oil, on top of existing “reciprocal” tariffs. The U.S. says the measures aim to curb funds flowing to Russia amid its war in Ukraine.
US in talks over 10% Intel stake, White House confirms
The White House confirmed on Tuesday that the Trump administration is working on a deal that could see the US government taking a 10% stake in chip giant Intel.

The potential deal could involve swapping government grants for Intel

Govt May Ban Real Money Games, Penalise Influencers
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has drafted a legislation which could place a blanket ban on all online gaming services – where users can play games after depositing money, in hopes of making more money – owing to growing concerns about alleged money laundering through these services, and their harmful societal impact, The Indian Express has learnt.
shares, according to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
The highly unusual move could help Intel as it struggles to compete with rivals like Nvidia, Samsung and TSMC, particularly in the booming artificial intelligence (AI) chip market. Intel has been contacted by the BBC for comment.
The US wants a stake Intel in exchange for grants approved during the Biden administration, Lutnick said on CNBC on Tuesday.
"We should get an equity stake for our money," he added. "We'll get equity in return for that... instead of just giving grants away."
The potential deal, which was first reported last week, aims to help Intel build a flagship manufacturing hub in the US state of Ohio. At the time, a White House spokesman told the BBC that the reports "should be regarded as speculation" unless officially announced.
Finance Ministry Rules Out Fee on UPI Transactions
There is no plan currently to impose a fee on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, the finance ministry informed the Lok Sabha on Monday, days after comments by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra sparked concerns that these payments may cease to be free for individuals. “Presently, there is no such proposal to impose transaction charges on UPI,” Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in response to a written question in the Lower House of Parliament asking if the government or the central bank proposed to charge a fee on UPI transactions.

Selectors, Gambhir Eye Gill for T20 Leadership
Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined the selection committee meeting online, was also of the view that India needs to groom someone for the future.
Mumbai: In a strategic shift aimed at futureproofing India’s T20 leadership, selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir have backed Shubman Gill—currently the Test captain—as the likely successor to Suryakumar Yadav in the shortest format.
At Tuesday’s selection committee meeting, Gambhir joined virtually and expressed the need to invest in a long-term leader. With Yadav approaching 35, the panel focused much of its discussion on finding his successor. Gill, who turns 26 next month, was deemed the frontrunner due to his impressive captaincy and run-scoring form on the recent England tour. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar emphasized that Gill had been part of the T20 leadership structure—having
Ex-India Coach Alleges Iyer Snub Down to Likeability
Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India’s 15-member Asia Cup 2025 squad, announced by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, surprised fans and experts alike. Iyer, a standout performer in the Champions Trophy and IPL 2025, scored 604 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 175.07, guiding Punjab Kings to the final. Despite this form, he was not named among the squad or five standbys. Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar expressed his dismay on Star Sports, questioning why Iyer was left out even of the 20-member squad. He hinted at possible favoritism, stating, “Who you like a little more than the other… maybe Shreyas Iyer is not liked as much as someone else. Maybe.” Agarkar responded, emphasizing squad limits: “There’s no fault of his… we can only pick 15, and he might have to wait for his chance.”
served as vice-captain during the Sri Lanka tour— but was sidelined due to Test commitments and injuries. His recent performances, coupled with evident leadership traits, made him a compelling choice. Although all-rounder Axar Patel was considered as vice-captain, the consensus favoured grooming a younger, long-term option.
Gill’s Test experience and burgeoning leadership credentials tipped the scales in his favour.
Gill has now been named vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup T20I in the UAE (September 9–28), and is expected to feature in the playing XI. The move is seen as laying groundwork for a smooth transition in T20 leadership once Yadav steps aside
Official: Pakistan Withdraws from Hockey Asia Cup; Bangladesh Steps In
Rajgir, Bihar : The Asian Hockey Federation confirmed on Tuesday that Pakistan will not travel to India for the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, scheduled from August 29 to September 7 in Rajgir, citing security concerns. Despite assurances from Indian authorities regarding visas, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) declined participation, prompting the Pakistan Sports Board to instruct national federations to halt commitments to events in India.
In Pakistan’s absence, Bangladesh has been named as the replacement, based on their performance in the AHF Cup. Icelandic team Kazakhstan has also been slotted in, replacing Oman, who similarly withdrew.
India finds itself grouped in Pool A alongside Japan, China, and Kazakhstan. Its opening match is scheduled against China on August 29, with subsequent games against Japan (August 31) and Kazakhstan (September 1). Meanwhile, Pool B features defending champions South Korea, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei. The tournament winner will secure a direct berth in the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium
Indian hockey officials have downplayed the security concerns raised, asserting that India’s security environment is robust and capable of hosting international events without jeopardy
Prithvi Shaw Hits Ton, Says He Doesn’t Need Sympathy
Prithvi Shaw, who has moved to Maharashtra ahead of the new domestic season, believes he can regain the lost ground. The 25-year-old, who scored a century on his Test debut in 2018, has seen his career nose-dive because of disciplinary and fitness issues and was dropped by his home state unit Mumbai. Having shifted to Maharashtra, he began the season on a resounding note scoring 111 against Chhattisgarh in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament here on Tuesday.
Beginning their first innings after Chhattisgarh made 252, Shaw was the standout performer for Maharashtra which folded for 217. Since being dropped from the Indian team, Shaw has lost ground in the national scheme of things. Apart from finding no takers in the Indian Premier League, Shaw even failed to make the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. No longer part of the targeted pool list, Shaw is now in a place where he has to start from scratch.

Russia Offers Oil Discount to India
Russia will continue to supply oil to India, now at a 5 percent discount, despite the pressure and sanctions on the latter from the US. Deputy trade representative of Russia to India, Evgeniy Griva said that, "There will be a 5 per cent discount, subject to negotiation, on Russian crude oil purchases to India". Griva added that, "Despite the political situation, approximately the same level of oil will be imported by India." He said, "As for discounts, it's a commercial secret. I think, because it's usually just dialogue between
businessmen and approximately usually 5%. It's fluctuating, but usually it's plusminus 5%."
He was joined by Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin, who said that although it is a "challenging situation" for New Delhi, "we have trust in our ties". He also said, "We are confident that India-Russia energy cooperation will continue notwithstanding the external pressure."
Meanwhile the US has accused India of funding the war in Ukraine by purchasing Russian oil and has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on New Delhi for buying oil from Russia.
Russia Offers Solution for Indian Goods Amid US Tariff Struggle
New Delhi,: India can export goods to Russia if facing difficulties in the US market, said Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin. His comments follow the US doubling tariffs on Indian products to 50 percent over India’s continued imports of Russian crude, effective August 27. Babushkin called the sanctions “unjustified” and criticized secondary measures, saying, “Friends don’t behave like that.” He emphasized that India-
"It is unjustified," the Russian official said, when asked about US' sanctions on India over its purchase of Russian crude oil.
Russia energy cooperation will continue and highlighted that BRICS nations never impose such sanctions. India condemned the US action as “unfair and unreasonable,” which could hit sectors like textiles, marine, and leather. Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed New Delhi will not bow to economic pressure. Babushkin encouraged Indian exporters to explore the Russian market as an alternative, underscoring the resilience of bilateral trade, even amid US tariff measures. Meanwhile, US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the tariffs as a measure to exert secondary pressure on Russia and push for a swift end to the Ukraine conflict.

After the bills were tabled on Wednesday, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal accused the BJP of trying to “sabotage the federal system” and questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s morality, citing his 2010 arrest as Gujarat’s Home Minister. He added, “We can’t be shameless, continue in office under charges. I had resigned.”

Trump Imposed Tariffs On India To Put Pressure On Russia: White House
Washington, August 20, 2025 — The White House confirmed on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump has imposed additional tariffs on India, doubling the rate to 50 percent. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained the move is intended to pressure Russia to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During a briefing, Leavitt said Trump aims to end the war swiftly, noting his recent talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the possibility of a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. She emphasized the administration’s proactive approach, highlighting
that European leaders and the NATO Secretary General visited the White House within 48 hours of Trump’s meeting with Putin to discuss peace efforts.
“President Trump wants to bring this war to an end as quickly as possible,” Leavitt
said, adding that he is working closely with both Russia and Ukraine, as well as European allies, to ensure a lasting resolution.
Leavitt reiterated the White House’s claim that the conflict might not have occurred if Trump were in office, noting Putin’s apparent agreement. She further stated that Trump is coordinating with European leaders and NATO to guarantee long-term security after the war. Trump’s additional tariffs on India form part of a broader strategy to exert secondary pressure on Russia, while simultaneously engaging in diplomatic efforts to bring both sides to the negotiating table and achieve peace.

US To Screen Immigrants for AntiAmericanism
The Trump administration has directed U.S. immigration officers to screen visa and green card applicants for “antiAmericanism,” including social media activity, raising concerns for thousands of Indian students and professionals. Rubio:
China
Spared, India Hit With Russian Oil Tariffs
Washington: US Senator Marco Rubio clarified why China, Russia's largest oil buyer, has been spared secondary sanctions while India faces 50% tariffs on Russian oil, including a 25% duty on New Delhi’s trade with Moscow, NDTV reports.
Rubio explained that much of the Russian oil China buys is refined and then sold on the global market, often to Europe. Sanctioning Chinese refiners could disrupt global energy supplies and push oil prices higher, he warned. “If you put secondary sanctions on China, that oil is then sold into the global marketplace. Anyone buying it would pay more or have to find alternatives,” he said. He noted that European nations, which buy some Russian oil from China, have expressed concerns about punitive measures against Beijing. Rubio emphasized that sanctioning China could lead to wider economic repercussions and disrupt global energy markets.
In contrast, India’s purchases of Russian oil are not part of this reexport system, making tariffs more straightforward to impose. Rubio also stressed that he does not seek a tit-for-tat with European nations and hopes they can help maintain global energy stability while complying with US sanctions.
US Monitors India and Pakistan Daily, Explains Reason
Washington: The US monitors IndiaPakistan “every single day,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, echoing President Donald Trump’s claim of helping prevent a potential nuclear escalation, NDTV reports. Rubio noted that maintaining ceasefires is difficult, as deals can collapse quickly.
Trump has repeatedly said his administration mediated a “full and immediate” ceasefire in May, linking it to potential trade incentives. India, however, denied any third-party involvement. Prime Minister Modi stated no foreign leader asked India to halt Operation Sindoor, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the ceasefire was unrelated to trade.
Rubio highlighted the US commitment to global peace, citing India-Pakistan and other conflicts. Pakistan, in contrast, has credited Trump, engaging with the US diplomatically since the truce.

Adani Says Modern Weapons Are Algorithms
Kharagpur: The wars nowadays are often invisible and technology-driven, industrialist Gautam Adani said on Monday evening, asserting that algorithms are today's weapons and not guns. Our ability to prepare for these wars will decide the country's future, the chairman of Adani Group said, highlighting the need to become self-reliant in all sectors.
"From conventional wars to technology-
driven wars, our ability to prepare will decide our future, because the wars we fight today are often invisible. They are fought in server farms, not in trenches. The weapons are algorithms, not guns. The empires are not built on land but in data centres. The armies are botnets and not battalions," he told students and faculty members at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He said the scenario was similar in the energy sector. "In the case of energy vulnerability, we export 85% of our oil. A single geopolitical incident can restrict our growth. When our data crosses India's borders, every bit of this data becomes raw materials for foreign algorithms, creates foreign wealth, and strengthens foreign dominions," added the business tycoon.

The Opposition’s plan follows strong remarks by Mr Kumar in response to senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s “vote chori” allegations. Speaking at a press meet, the Chief Election Commissioner said using “improper words” insults the Constitution and emphasized that the Commission treats all parties equally, standing firmly with voters. Earlier, Mr Gandhi alleged voter fraud in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and has launched the 1,300 km Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar. Opposition parties claim the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Bihar favors the ruling BJP.

Trump Hints At Dropping India Tariff Over Russian Oil
US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed Russia lost India as one of its oil clients after Washington announced a penalty on New Delhi over the purchases, but indicated he may not impose such secondary tariffs on countries continuing to procure Russian crude oil. The President's remarks came even as New Delhi is yet to confirm any halt in oil purchases from Moscow after Washington announced a 25 per cent duty in addition to a 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods last month. The additional duty is scheduled to come into effect on August 27.
The US had threatened sanctions on Moscow and secondary sanctions on countries that buy its oil if no moves are made to end the war in Ukraine. China and India are the top two buyers of Russian oil.
"Well, he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 per cent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot...And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it," Mr Trump told Fox News as he departed for Alaska for a high-stakes meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir

On August 6, Mr Trump escalated his tariff offensive against India by slapping an additional 25 per cent duty and subsequently doubling it to 50 per cent on Indian goods over New Delhi's continuous imports of Russian oil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier said New Delhi would not back down in the face of economic pressure.
Deal Until A Deal": Trump, Putin End "Productive" Talks With No Results
US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday held a "very productive" and "mutually respectful" high-stakes summit in Alaska, as the two world leaders sought a way to bring the Ukraine conflict - one of the deadliest in Europe in 80 years - to a close.
President Trump made it clear that "there is no deal until there is a deal", indicating the absence of any proper resolution during the meeting, while President Putin described the talks as "thorough and useful". Mr Putin also said Russia was "sincerely interested in putting an end" to the conflict in Ukraine but
Mr Putin said Moscow expected "that Kyiv and the European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles".
flagged "legitimate concerns" to be taken into account. The two leaders made the remarks during a joint press conference after three hours of talks on Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a war that has killed thousands of people so far and on which Moscow has not yet relented, making rapid gains just before the summit. Both of them, however, did not take any questions from journalists. "We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left," Mr Trump told reporters, adding: "We didn't get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there."
He also said Moscow expected "that Kyiv and the European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles".
Zelensky To Meet Trump After Putin Summit
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky will head to Washington on Monday to discuss "ending the killing and the war" with US President Donald Trump, he announced Saturday. Zelensky said so after holding a call with Trump, during which the US leader informed him about the "main points" of his talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
"On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington DC, to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war," Zelensky said.
"I am grateful for the invitation."
Zelensky said he had a "long and substantive conversation with Trump", which began as a one-on-one talk, before being joined by European leaders.

Walking 6-6-6 Expert Take
What is the 6-6-6 walking style?
Experts say the 6-6-6 walking workout involves walking for 60 minutes, either at 6 a.m. or 6 p.m. It also involves a six-minute warm-up at a slow pace that helps you ease into walking and a six-minute cool-down to aid in recovery.
Since the bulk of the exercise is at a faster and brisker pace, it raises the heart rate and challenges your cardio system. Experts say it is designed to be short and simple and benefits those who want to fit exercise into a busy day. The 6-6-6 programme also helps you get more than 150 minutes of exercise every week, as universally recommended. What is important while following the 6-6-6 routine?
The 6-6-6 walking style helps you burn more fat for fuel, which can aid in weight loss. However, there are a few more important parameters to note, which include:
Time
Sticking to a 6 a.m. or p.m. walking schedule is important, as it ensures consistency, which can eventually make it easier for you to fit walking into your daily schedule.
Walking in the morning hours on an empty stomach also helps increase fat burn. On the other hand, walking right after eating – like following dinner – supports weight loss, improves digestion, and also regulates blood sugar levels.
Duration
Walking for an hour daily is a health goal, which many experts feel is equivalent to doing 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise every week. Brisk walking enhances heart health, strengthens bones, and boosts muscle strength and endurance, thereby helping in weight loss and keeping your cardiovascular health regulated.
Warming up and cooling down
The 6-6-6 method makes sure that warming up and cooling down are also done properly, as both help to increase your heart rate and blood flow to the muscles, which prevents strains or sprains as you walk. They are also good to help reduce muscle soreness and allow your heart rate to return to normal gradually.

PAPAYA?
Always Check Your Dates Before Eating Them
Dates, or khajoor as they are popularly called, are among the best foods for your physical and mental health. Packed with fibre, antioxidants, and several essential minerals, dates are great for digestion, cardiovascular health, and even weight loss. While doctors advise eating two dates daily, there is also a catch here. Do you ever check the insides after deseeding them?
According to a health expert, dates harbour hidden mold that can often go unnoticed. Cutting them open before eating increases the chances of spotting any fungal contamination and avoiding potential health risks. “Have you ever wondered why dates are considered one of the most nutrient-packed fruits?” US-based Dr Kunal Sood told his followers on Instagram.
Why should you eat dates daily?
Even though dates are chewy with a sweet flavour, they are extremely high in a few important nutrients and have a variety of advantages and uses. A few of these are:
Loaded with antioxidants
Dates are rich in various antioxidants that have a number of health benefits, including a reduced risk of several diseases like cancer, as antioxidants protect your cells from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that may cause harmful reactions in your body and lead to disease.
Promote brain health
Eating dates regularly also helps improve your brain function by lowering inflammatory markers like interleukin in the brain. High levels of IL-6 are associated with a higher risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Strengthens bones
Dates are a powerhouse of several minerals, including phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium, which prevent bone-related conditions like osteoporosis.
Papaya has long enjoyed its reputation as a “superfruit”, bursting with vitamins A, C, and E, powerful antioxidants, and the digestive enzyme papain. From aiding digestion to giving the immune system a lift and promoting glowing skin, it’s little wonder papaya has found a regular spot in healthconscious diets around the world.
1. Pregnant Women: Unripe or semi-ripe papaya contains papain and latex, which may stimulate uterine contractions. This can raise the risk of premature labour, miscarriage, or other complications. While fully ripe papaya has lower levels of these compounds, many doctors still recommend avoiding it completely. For expectant mothers, it’s safest to stay cautious and skip papaya until after pregnancy.
2. Individuals With Heart Rhythm Disorders Papaya carries cyanogenic compounds that can release trace amounts of hydrogen cyanide. For healthy people this is harmless, but those with irregular heartbeats may face risks. Overeating papaya could worsen arrhythmias or interact with prescribed heart medicines. Anyone with a heart condition should check with their doctor before including papaya in their diet.
3. People With Latex Allergies: Proteins in papaya resemble those found in natural latex, creating the possibility of cross-allergic reactions. This can lead to symptoms such as skin itching, rashes, or sneezing. In more
serious cases, it may even cause breathing problems. If you have a latex allergy, it’s generally safest to avoid papaya altogether.
4. Those Managing Hypothyroidism
Certain compounds in papaya are believed to affect thyroid hormone activity. This may worsen common hypothyroid symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance. Eating papaya frequently without medical guidance could interfere with thyroid management. People with hypothyroidism should consult a healthcare professional before making it a regular food.
5. People Prone to Kidney Stones : Papaya is rich in vitamin C, which normally benefits immunity and skin health. However, excess vitamin C turns into oxalates in the body, which can bind with calcium to form kidney stones. Those who already have a history of stones are particularly at risk. The National Kidney Foundation advises limiting vitamin C intake, so papaya should be consumed in moderation.

India Plans Mission to Curb Illegal Infiltration: PM Modi
Speaking on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, PM Modi alerted the citizens to a conspiracy to change the country's demography.
New Delhi: (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, during his address from the ramparts of Red Fort, warned against illegal immigration, which is threatening the country. He announced a demography mission to protect the country from the dangers posed by illegal immigrants.
PM Modi said he would like to alert the nation about the concern, which has now become a challenge. “Under a well-thought-out conspiracy, the country's demography is being changed, and seeds of a new crisis are being sown,” the PM said. The Prime Minister said that the infiltrators are snatching the livelihood of the youth of the country.
“They are targeting our sisters and daughters. They are misleading the adivasis and grabbing their lands. This will not be tolerated," said PM Modi.

Trump Links India Tariffs to Putin Meeting
In an interview with Fox News Radio, US President
Trump said that the secondary tariffs against India
influenced Russian
"Everything has an impact," he added, saying that secondary tariffs against India "essentially took them out of buying oil from Russia." Earlier this month, Trump ordered steeper tariffs on Indian goods over New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. This takes the level to 50 percent for many products - among the highest on any American trading partner.
“It sows the seeds of conflict. No country can surrender before infiltrators. Then how can we?” he said.
PM Modi announced the national mission to tackle what he referred to as a looming danger. “Not to allow such activities is our duty to our ancestors who gifted us an Independent India. So I announce from the ramparts of Red Fort that we have decided to start a high-powered demography mission. This mission will tackle the danger that is looming over India," said PM Modi.
The issue of illegal immigration has become a rising concern in the country. Authorities have been cracking down on illegal immigrants throughout the country, a majority of whom are from Bangladesh.
The security apparatus has been identifying suspicious foreign nationals, especially those from Bangladesh, who have entered India illegally and are living under the guise of Indian citizens after making fake Indian documents.

"Economic Selfishness On The Rise": PM Modi Amid Trump Tariff Tensions
In a clear message to citizens in the face of the US's tariff and penalty threats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India is "unstoppable" and it is time for the country to prove its mettle in the global markets with quality products.
Addressing the nation on the occasion of Independence Day, Mr Modi said India will also not compromise on the interest of farmers and not accept any detrimental policies.
His remarks came amid rising tensions between the US and India over the former's escalation of tariff to 50 per cent on Indian goods.
"This is the time to script history. We have to rule the world
market. We have to lower production costs. It is time to prove our mettle in global markets with quality products," the Prime Minister said from the ramparts of the Red Fort. 'Daam Kam, Dum Zyada (less price, higher quality) should be the mantra (goal). Economic selfishness is on the rise. Don't worry about the other county. It is time to move ahead and meet our goals," he added.
He said the need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a 'samarth Bharat (strong India)', just like the country's freedom fighters had envisioned a "free India". "We should not waste our energy in belittling others, our focus should be on strengthening ourselves," he said.

Big B Gets Candid About Ageing Struggles
In a candid blog post dated August 17, Amitabh Bachchan shared reflections on ageing, describing how his daily routine is now shaped as much by medication and health regimens as by work.
“The body gradually begins to lose its balance and there is a need to work on it,” the 81-year-old actor wrote, stressing the role of yoga, breathing exercises and mobility training in staying fit.
Bachchan admitted that even mundane tasks now require caution. “Some routines that were there earlier…NAH… no baby. Just one day’s absence and the pains return,” he wrote. Doctors, he added, advise him to sit while putting on trousers to avoid falls.
He noted with irony that simple actions like bending to pick up paper now demand handlebars and deliberate care. “The bravado tells you to go ahead…until you realise it’s a major problem,” he said.
Calling ageing a universal truth, Bachchan observed: “It shall happen to all of us…We all go downward the day we are brought into this world. Road Safety & Fairness Act Signed Into Law
Giannoulias-AARP Illinois Measure Establishes Procedures to Report Unsafe Drivers
CHICAGO, IL- Legislation championed by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and AARP Illinois, aimed at making roads safer and removing outdated agebased barriers, was recently signed into law by Governor JB Pritzker.
The Road Safety & Fairness Act (HB 1226), introduced by State Senator Ram Villivalam (8th District – Chicago) and State Representative Jay Hoffman (113th District – Belleville), passed both the Illinois House and Senate unanimously during the General Assembly’s Spring session. With 70 percent of lawmakers co-sponsoring the bill, it is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
The law establishes new procedures to prevent unsafe driving by allowing immediate family members to report concerns about a relative’s cognitive or medical decline to the state for review. Currently, Illinois is one of only five states that do not allow family members to report such concerns.
Additionally, the legislation raises the age for mandatory behind-the-wheel driving tests from 79 to 87. Illinois has been the only state in the nation
Removes Behind-the-Wheel Driving Test Barrier for Safest Drivers
requiring driving tests for seniors based solely on age. Data from the Illinois Department of Transportation shows that in 2023, the crash rate for drivers aged 75 and older was 24.61 per 1,000 drivers, lower than any age group between 16 and 74.
“The Road Safety & Fairness Act is common-sense, bipartisan legislation that will make our roads safer and ensure seniors are treated fairly,” said Giannoulias.
“Governor Pritzker’s signing aligns Illinois with other states that have long implemented these more equitable standards.”
Philippe Largent, State Director of AARP Illinois, added, “This legislation ends outdated and discriminatory practices that unfairly target older
LAX Introduces Biometric Technology to Speed Up U.S. Arrivals
LOS ANGELES, CA — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has rolled out new biometric screening technology at Los Angeles International Airport’s Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminal 7, aiming to speed up entry for U.S. citizens while tightening security.
The system, known as Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP), became fully operational in June through a partnership with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). It uses facial comparison software and biometric cameras to confirm a traveler’s identity, citizenship status, and security clearance in seconds, creating a touchless arrival process.
CBP officials say the upgrade will cut wait times and allow officers to focus on traveler interaction and higher-risk cases. “Our goal is to enhance national security while creating a seamless travel experience,” said Andrew H. Douglas, CBP’s Acting Director in Los Angeles. LAX is one of the first major U.S.
airports to adopt the system. The Tom Bradley terminal processed nearly 10.4 million international arrivals in 2024, making it the busiest single terminal in the country for foreign traveler entries.
CBP reports that EPP has already reduced wait times for U.S. citizens by about 25 percent at airports nationwide. Participation is voluntary, and travelers can still request the traditional entry process. CBP officers remain on hand to take declarations and conduct questioning as needed.
LAWA funded the purchase of tablets and installed dedicated Wi-Fi for the inspection areas, while CBP handled operations. John Ackerman, CEO of LAWA, said the technology is part of preparations for upcoming world events and the airport’s broader modernization program. Expansion of EPP to LAX’s Terminal 2 is already planned. CBP, with more than 65,000 personnel, is the nation’s largest law enforcement agency, responsible for securing U.S. borders and facilitating lawful travel and trade.
drivers. With 1.7 million members across the state, AARP Illinois proudly supports this law, which respects ability over age and helps older adults stay safely connected to their communities.”
Senator Villivalam said, “This measure aligns Illinois’ senior driving standards with the rest of the nation while maintaining strict road safety safeguards. It’s time to remove this unnecessary and burdensome requirement from our state’s safest drivers.”
Representative Hoffman noted, “A birthday is not an accurate measure of safe driving ability. Driving skill and medical health should determine licensing requirements. Allowing immediate family members—who see their loved ones daily—to report concerns is a more effective way to
protect road safety.”
Senator Don DeWitte (33rd District – West Dundee) stated, “Illinois was the only state with this antiquated law. Seniors repeatedly shared how unfairly they felt targeted. This law restores fairness and respect to long-time safe drivers.”
Representative Jeff Keicher (70th District – Sycamore), a chief co-sponsor, added, “We thank the seniors who shared their experiences and engaged with state government. Their voices helped make this change possible.”
Key Changes Under the Road Safety & Fairness Act:
Ages 79–80: License renewal at a DMV facility still requires a vision test (and a written test if there’s a driving violation), but a driving test is no longer mandatory.
Ages 81–86: Renewal every two years with a vision test (and a written test if needed), without a driving test.
Ages 87 and older: Annual renewal continues, including vision and driving tests. A written exam may be required based on driving record; these rules remain unchanged.

US Revokes Over 6,000 Student Visas, Raising Alarm in India
The U.S. State Department has revoked more than 6,000 visas issued to international students, citing criminal violations and national security concerns — a move closely watched in India, which sends the largest number of students to American campuses.
According to officials, around 4,000 visas were cancelled for offenses such as assault, DUI, and burglary. Another 200–300 were revoked under INA 3B, a statute that defines “terrorist activity” broadly, sparking criticism that the label can sweep in political protest. The Trump administration has in some cases equated pro-Palestine student activism with antisemitic behavior.
The crackdown comes as the U.S. introduces stricter scrutiny for visa applications. All applicants must now provide access to their social media accounts, while consular officers are instructed to flag signs of hostility toward the U.S., support for terrorist groups, or antisemitic harassment. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers that thousands of student visas had already been rescinded this year, with more to come. Democrats argue the measures undermine due process and unfairly target students. For India, the policy shift is significant. With more than 320,000 students enrolled in U.S. universities in 2023–24, India recently overtook China as the top sender of international students.

Congressman Thanedar’s Bill Seeks Oversight by Removing ICE Agents
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to what he calls a “deport now, ask questions later” approach, Congressman Shri Thanedar has introduced the Ending Qualified Immunity for ICE Agents Act, a bill designed to hold U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel accountable by removing their qualified immunity protections.
The legislation comes amid heightened concerns over ICE’s growing budget and authority, particularly after the passage of the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill”, which allocates more than $170 billion to the agency. Critics argue this massive investment, without robust oversight, risks a surge in civil rights violations. Thanedar points to a rising number of reports of agents detaining individuals at courthouses, workplaces, and places of worship—often without transparency.
“They are more interested in hitting quotas and racial profiling than in treating people with basic respect and dignity,” said Rep. Thanedar. “We’ve seen
ICE detain Americans with impunity and commit gross civil rights violations. Qualified immunity shields them from accountability. No more. No one should be above the law—especially those entrusted with enforcing it.”
The bill amends federal law to strip ICE agents of the qualified immunity defense, allowing individuals to sue for violations of constitutional rights regardless of whether the agent believed their actions were lawful at the time. Thanedar stresses that with the agency’s expanded budget, rigorous oversight is more critical than ever. “If an ICE agent breaks the law, they should be held accountable just like any other citizen,” he added. “With Trump allocating an additional $75 billion to ICE, the demand for oversight and accountability has never been more urgent.”
Applying for U.S. Citizenship? “Good Moral Character” is now a Requirement
As of August 15, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officers are instructed to take a more rigorous, holistic view of an applicant’s moral character. This means they won’t only look for red flags, they'll also weigh the positive contributions you’ve made to American society before you can get your covered citizenship in the United States of America. What counts as a “positive factor”?
USCIS has outlined several examples
of what officers may consider:
Volunteering or community service
Responsible caregiving for family
members
Educational achievements, such as degrees or certificates
Steady, lawful employment and professional growth
Filing taxes regularly and on time
Long-term residence that shows integration into U.S. society
What applicants should keep in mind
For anyone preparing to file Form N-400, this change means it’s not enough to simply claim a clean record. You’ll want to document the ways you’ve actively contributed -- at home, at work, and in your community.

Five Indian Origin Charged in Nebraska Human Trafficking, Immigration, and Drug Crimes
OMAHA, NE- United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced federal charges against five individuals accused of conspiring in labor trafficking, sex trafficking, alien harboring, drug trafficking, and related crimes at multiple hotels across the Omaha metro area and central Nebraska.
Defendants Kentakumar “Ken” Chaudhari (36, Elkhorn), Rashmi “Falguni” Samani (42, Elkhorn), Amit Prahladbhai Chaudhari (32, Omaha), Amit “Matt” Babubhai Chaudhari (33, Omaha), and Maheshkumar “Mahesh” Chaudhari (38, Norfolk) were arrested August 12, 2025. Search warrants were executed at four hotels—AmericInn, The Inn, New Victorian, and Roadway Inn—and other associated businesses, including “Brow and Lash” salons.
Authorities rescued 10 minors and 17 adults allegedly forced to work long hours in unsafe, unsanitary hotel conditions, sometimes paying the defendants for their own lodging. One witness reported immigrant victims sleeping on floors infested with cockroaches.
The complaint alleges defendants permitted and encouraged sex trafficking of both minors and adults at their hotels, with victims exploited by traffickers and hotel staff. The hotels were also allegedly used to facilitate open drug trafficking, with overdoses so common that Narcan was kept at the front desk. Prosecutors further allege a fraudulent scheme to obtain U visas by staging a robbery in 2022, as well
as arrangements to smuggle workers from India and facilitate illegal entry via the Arizona border. Co-conspirators allegedly transported undocumented individuals to Washington to obtain fraudulent driver’s licenses for $1,000 each.
Investigators seized over $565,000 in cash, illicit drugs, and filed actions to prevent the sale of the hotels. Assets allegedly acquired through illegal activity are being recovered by the U.S. Marshals Service.
The case involved coordinated efforts by the FBI, DHS, Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, Omaha Police, Nebraska State Patrol, IRS Criminal Investigation, U.S. Marshals, and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. Officials urge anyone with information to contact the Omaha FBI Field Office.
U.S. Attorney Woods stated, “There is no evil greater than exploiting human beings for profit or pleasure… law enforcement will seek it, find it, root it out, and ensure every rescued victim has the chance for justice and freedom.”
The complaint alleges defendants permitted and encouraged sex trafficking of both minors and adults at their hotels, with victims exploited by traffickers and hotel staff.

Cook County Warns Families on Measles Risk
CHICAGO, IL- During National Immunization Awareness Month, Cook County officials, school leaders, and faith representatives urged families to vaccinate children against measles as they return to school.
With cases rising nationwide and the number of unvaccinated suburban Cook County children doubling over the past decade, the Cook County Department of Public Health launched a new campaign promoting measles (MMR) vaccinations at ages 1 and 4, or before kindergarten. Featuring teddy bears marking the two key vaccine ages, the bilingual campaign will run from mid-August to mid-October on transit, billboards, and digital platforms.
“We all want what’s best for our children…Vaccines save lives,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Dr. Erik Mikaitis, CEO of Cook County Health, called vaccination “one of the simplest
yet most powerful steps” to protect communities, while Dr. Kiran Joshi warned, “Measles is making a comeback, but we can stop it.”
The Archdiocese of Chicago also voiced support, noting vaccination is “morally acceptable” and protects both family and community.
Measles, one of the most contagious diseases, is 97% preventable with two MMR doses, generally at ages 1 and 4, providing lifelong immunity. Globally, the vaccine has saved 154 million lives in 50 years. In the 2024–2025 outbreak, 95% of U.S. cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals.
Officials warn misinformation—such as false links to autism—has fueled vaccine declines. Measles can cause pneumonia, brain damage, blindness, deafness, and death, especially in young children. Families are urged to confirm vaccination status, seek reliable information, and stay home if sick to prevent further spread.

LOS ANGELES, CA- Los Angeles school district police, staff, and community volunteers will create protective perimeters around more than 100 schools when classes begin Thursday, aiming to ensure safe passage for students. The announcement followed reports that immigration agents detained a student outside Arleta High School in a case of mistaken identity.
The 15-year-old, a student with disabilities enrolled at another district school, was at Arleta High on Monday with family members when federal agents handcuffed him, drew weapons, and briefly detained him. Family members intervened, and agents released the boy. The school principal came to the scene,
and bullets apparently left behind by agents were collected by school police.
“Violently detaining a child just outside a public school is absolutely reprehensible,” said school board member Kelly Gonez, who represents Arleta High. Homeland Security officials did not respond to requests for comment.
Concerns about immigration raids have prompted the district to expand “safe zones” from about 40 schools last year to over 100, targeting areas most affected by enforcement.
Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the initiative will include before- and after-school coverage, with central office staff, teachers union volunteers, and police patrols providing “eyes and ears” along school routes.
Mayor Karen Bass emphasized that neither LAPD nor school police assist with immigration enforcement. Local mayors from South Gate, Huntington Park, Bell, West Hollywood, and Vernon pledged support, from patrolling campuses to monitoring crosswalks and traffic.
Authorities cannot stop federal agents with valid judicial warrants but will alert parents and nearby schools if immigration operations are underway.
To reassure families, LAUSD has contacted more than 10,000 households considered at risk, distributed multilingual “family preparedness” packets explaining rights and resources, and established a “compassion fund” for legal and other assistance. The district also employs over 350 workers who could face loss of legal status.
Buses, primarily used by students with disabilities and magnet program attendees, may be rerouted for safety. They will be treated as extensions of campus, and agents will not be allowed aboard without proper authority.
The measures, Carvalho said, are about ensuring every child’s safe journey to and from school, regardless of immigration status.
LA County Declares India Independence Day
LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has unanimously declared August 15, 2025, as India Independence Day in honor of the 79th anniversary of India’s independence from British rule. The motion, introduced by Supervisor Janice Hahn and approved on August 12, recognizes the Indian American community’s significant contributions to the county’s cultural, economic, and social fabric.
“Our Indian American community is an integral part of the fabric of LA County,” said Supervisor Hahn. “I am proud to represent this large and growing community, and to join them in celebrating almost eight decades of independence for a rising, vibrant India.” With more than 98,000 residents, the Indian American population is one of the fastestgrowing South Asian communities in the region. Hahn’s district includes the City of Artesia, home to the county’s well-known “Little India” district, a hub for Indian-owned businesses, restaurants, and cultural organizations. This is not the county’s first recognition of Indian culture. In 2022, Supervisor Hahn championed the county’s first-ever official acknowledgment of Diwali, the Festival of Lights.
State Senator Ram Villivalam Leads New Law to Ease License Renewal for Seniors
SPRINGFIELD, IL-State Senator Ram Villivalam, working alongside the Illinois Secretary of State and AARP, has championed a new law aimed at reducing the hurdles seniors face when renewing their driver’s licenses.
“Going to renew your license or take a driving test is not the most exciting task — but for our senior residents, it comes with unique challenges, including stricter testing requirements than any other age group,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “I am proud to usher in this new law that eases the burden on seniors, helping them maintain their mobility and independence.”
In 2022, Villivalam passed legislation directing the Secretary of State’s Office to study age-related changes that could affect driving safety. The study found that Illinois seniors are among the safest drivers on the road, and that raising the age for mandatory driving tests had both benefited seniors and reduced wait times at driver services facilities.
Building on these findings, the new law
AARP Illinois
raises the age for mandatory, in-person renewals from 75 to 79. It also increases the driving test requirement from age 79 to 87 — or to age 75 for those holding a commercial driver’s license.
“Every decision we make is data-driven,
and on this topic the data is clear: seniors are among the safest drivers of any age category,” said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. “This law aligns Illinois with national standards, removes unnecessary burdens for seniors, and keeps roads safe with
improved reporting procedures.”
The law also expands who can report concerns about a driver’s medical condition that could impair safe driving, adding immediate family members such as a spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling, or child. “Today we’re removing unnecessary barriers and creating a better system for drivers,” said State Representative Jay Hoffman (D-Belleville). “I appreciate the collaboration from Sen. Villivalam, Secretary Giannoulias, AARP, and all advocates who supported this responsible, data-driven update.”
“AARP Illinois proudly recognizes Senator Ram Villivalam for his outstanding leadership in advancing the Road Safety and Fairness Act,” said Philippe Largent, AARP Illinois State Director. “Thanks to his dedication, the age for behind-the-wheel testing will rise from 79 to 87, reducing unnecessary barriers for thousands of older adults while protecting their independence and dignity.” House Bill 1226 was signed into law Friday and will take effect July 1, 2026.

Tulabharam Festival Debuts at ISKCON Naperville, IL
NAPERVILLE, IL- In the heart of Naperville, Illinois—where suburban calm meets spiritual vibrance—the ISKCON Temple at 1505 McDowell Road became a radiant sanctuary of devotion on Saturday, August 9, 2025. From 4 PM to 9 PM, the inaugural Tulabharam Festival transformed the temple into a mosaic of music, laughter, generosity, and sacred ritual, drawing hundreds of participants from all walks of life.
Tulabharam, an ancient Vaishnavite tradition in which offerings are made equal to one’s own weight—or that of a loved one, revered Guru, or
anecdotes, and cultural humor, drawing the crowd closer. Chief guest His Grace Yugal Kishore Das shared the ABCD framework for spiritual life—Association, Books, Chanting, and Diet—emphasizing temples as pillars of strength for future generations.
the Lord’s Murti—evokes timeless legends of Satyabhama and Rukmini’s devotion to Lord Krishna. More than a ceremonial act, it is a celebration of generosity and gratitude, affirming that pure devotion outweighs the greatest material wealth.
The festival began with an auspicious invocation by temple priest Kanakabjadas, whose blowing of the sacred conch signaled the start of Sanskrit prayers. Temple president Premananda Mataji welcomed guests with reflections on ISKCON Naperville’s growth—from humble children’s programs to today’s 30,000-square-foot temple, inaugurated two years ago in the presence of Naperville’s mayor. Music infused the evening with magic: saxophonist Amit Kumar blended Eastern and Western devotional melodies; guitarist Neelesh Vilekar added nostalgic riffs; and tabla maestro Saurav Biswas brought rhythmic mastery rooted in a rich musical lineage. The kirtaniyas—Gopal Hari Das, Mukunda, Nandu, and others—led spirited chants of the Hare Krishna mantra, filling the space with transcendent energy.
Laughter mingled with devotion through Sanskrit jokes, witty
Fundraising chairman Sanatana Prema Prabhu spoke of the temple’s transformation and future plans, including community halls, classrooms, yoga rooms, and ornate gopurams. With a $2.4 million loan from the COVID era still accruing $15,000 monthly interest, he invited devotees to contribute through donations and interest-free loans, citing Padma Purana’s blessings for temple builders. The Tulabharam ritual unfolded with devotees placing offerings—mishri, cash, checks, and more—on one side of the ceremonial scale opposite Lord Krishna’s image, each act symbolizing selfless surrender. The highlight came with the arrival of actress and wellness coach Bhagyashree Ji, who auctioned her Banarasi sari worn that evening, inspiring generous bids and heartfelt giving.
Sponsors, including Malabar Jewelers, Patel Brothers, and numerous local businesses, played a vital role in making the event possible. Patel Brothers’ grocery donations will help ensure no one goes hungry during Janmashtami celebrations on August 16–17, which are expected to draw 15,000–25,000 attendees.
For ISKCON Naperville, the Tulabharam Festival was more than a fundraiser—it was a living prayer, a weaving together of devotion, heritage, and community spirit. As Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada envisioned, such events keep the flame of Krishna consciousness burning bright, inspiring service, generosity, and spiritual growth for generations to come.

Global Indian Diaspora Foundation Honors India’s Independence with Gala & Historic Film in Chicago
CHICAGO, IL- In a stirring celebration of culture, memory, and identity, the Indian American community in Chicago came together this past weekend for two landmark events commemorating India’s Independence Day — a vibrant cultural evening titled Bande Mataram and an exclusive pre-release screening of filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s much-anticipated historical drama The Bengal Files.
Hosted by the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation (GIDF), the celebrations began on Friday, August 8, with Bande Mataram — a patriotic tribute blending history, art, and civic pride. The evening’s highlight was the keynote address by Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago, who reflected on the enduring power of the phrase “Bande Mataram,” tracing its origins to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s 19th-century novel Anandamath.
“A nation is not just a territory on a map — it is a shared consciousness, a living spirit that binds its people,” Ghosh told the gathering. “Bande Mataram is more than a slogan; it is a pledge of devotion to the motherland.”
For GIDF founder and president Rakesh Malhotra, the evening reinforced the organization’s mission of cultural diplomacy. “Celebrating India’s Independence is not just about remembering the past — it’s about building bridges for the future,” he said, highlighting GIDF’s role in connecting communities across borders.
Other distinguished speakers, including Santosh Kumar, founder of the International Vedic University, and community leader Dr. Bharat Barai, linked India’s
freedom struggle to universal democratic values. Kumar described independence as “a reaffirmation of a civilizational ethos rooted in dharma, compassion, and harmony,” while Barai reminded the diaspora of its “patriotic duties that extend beyond borders.” The program opened with a ceremonial lamp lighting and the national anthems of both the United States and India, setting a tone of unity and pride. Audiences were then treated to an electrifying dance performance by the Bengali troupe led by Lina Chakraborty and Rashmi Roy Chowdhury, offering a vivid glimpse into India’s artistic heritage.
Dr. Adityan Banerjee, founder and chairman of the Council for Strategic Affairs, spoke on the global challenges faced by Hindus and the diaspora’s role in safeguarding cultural identity and community rights. Abhinav Raina, GIDF General Secretary, described the evening as bringing together “a vibrant crosssection of Chicago’s Indian diaspora — community leaders, influencers, students, and art enthusiasts.”
The event included an intimate conversation with filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and National Award-winning actress Pallavi Joshi, exploring the inspiration, research, and vision behind their latest work.
The Bengal Files: Cinema as Witness
The following evening, AMC Naperville hosted a sold-out red-carpet pre-release screening of The Bengal Files, a month ahead of its September 5 global release. Part of the “One Truth. Ten Cities” tour, the screening was organized by GIDF in partnership with the I Am Buddha Foundation, the Coalition of Hindus of North America, and the Global Kashmiri
Pandit Diaspora.
Following his internationally debated works The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files, Agnihotri’s latest film revisits the Direct-Action Day riots, the Great Calcutta Killings of 1946, and the Noakhali massacres — pivotal yet underrepresented episodes that shaped India’s partition.
Calling the film “a cinematic thunderstorm — a piercing mirror to our history,” Malhotra emphasized, “This is not just about Bengal; it is about humanity. It is about the right to life.”
“If The Kashmir Files hurt you, The Bengal Files will haunt you,” Agnihotri told the audience. “This is not just a film; it’s a moral responsibility to the generations that were silenced. The truth must be told — and now, it will be seen.”
Pallavi Joshi, Agnihotri’s creative partner, joined Friday’s meet-and-greet to share insight into the research, politics, and human stories behind the project. Raina noted that the screening was “not just a film event, but the start of an essential conversation.”
A Weekend of Memory and Mission
Together, the two events reflected a shared mission — preserving historical truths while fostering cultural understanding. For Chicago’s Indian diaspora, they were a reminder that Independence Day is as much about confronting difficult histories as celebrating freedom.
If Bande Mataram was the proud song of heritage, The Bengal Files was its unflinching mirror — urging audiences to remember both the glory of independence and the tragedies that shadowed it.
The evening’s highlight was the keynote address by Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago, who reflected on the enduring power of the phrase “Bande Mataram,” tracing its origins to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s 19th-century novel Anandamath.

70-Year-Old Sikh Assaulted, Suspect Arrested
HOLLYWOOD, CA — Police have arrested a suspect in the brutal beating of a 70-year-old Sikh man in North Hollywood, leaving the victim in critical condition after multiple surgeries.
The Los Angeles Police Department identified the suspect as Bo Richard Vitagliano, 44, who was taken into custody late August 12 near Lankershim Boulevard and Arminta Street. He is being held at the Van Nuys jail on $1.115 million bail, charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities allege Vitagliano, an unhoused man with a lengthy criminal history involving drugs, assault, and weapons charges, attacked Harpal Singh on August 4. Singh, who resided at the nearby Sikh Gurdwara of LA, was on his afternoon walk near Lankershim Boulevard and Saticoy Street when he was struck repeatedly with a golf club.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the attack stemmed from “a dispute over property belonging to the victim” and is not currently classified as a hate crime. The Sikh Coalition and other advocates dispute ruling out bias so quickly, noting Singh is unconscious and unable to provide a full statement with professional translation. “It is impossible to completely rule out a bias motive at this stage,” the Sikh Coalition said.
Indian American Doctor Settles $2M Fraud Case
Ajay Aggarwal and PRWCSWTX LLC—billed programs such as Medicare for invasive surgical procedures that were never performed.
HOUSTON, TX—Dr. Ajay Aggarwal, a Houston-based anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, has agreed to pay more than $2 million to settle allegations of submitting fraudulent claims to federal healthcare programs. The $2,053,515 settlement follows a joint investigation into his billing practices.
According to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, the 63-year-old physician and his entities—Ajay Aggarwal and PRWCSWTX LLC—billed programs such as Medicare for invasive surgical procedures that were never performed.
From November 2021 to March 2023, Aggarwal and his clinic, The Pain Relief & Wellness Center, repeatedly billed for the surgical implantation of neurostimulator electrodes—a
complex, costly procedure requiring an operating room and potentially costing federal programs thousands of dollars per case.
In reality, investigators found patients received a far simpler and much cheaper treatment: an electro-acupuncture procedure. This involved inserting a small wire just a few millimeters into the ear, with a neurostimulator taped behind it— done in-office, without any surgical incision.
“A doctor who uses simple medical devices on his patients, yet bills Medicare for a sophisticated spinal surgery, is bilking the American taxpayer, plain and simple,” said Ganjei.

New H-1B Rules Threaten Indian Tech Workers
WASHINGTON, DC-The White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs has approved a proposed regulation that could change how H-1B visas are allocated to workers in specialty occupations, Bloomberg Law reports. This suggests the new rule may be made public soon. The proposal is expected to revive a Trump-era plan to prioritize H-1B applicants based on offered wages, replacing the current random lottery system. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has not yet released details of the regulation. Currently, the H-1B program issues 85,000 visas annually, primarily used in the tech sector. Employers are selected through a random lottery to submit visa petitions. In 2021, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed a wage-based selection system, dividing applications into four tiers to favor higher-paying positions.
Under the Trump administration, DHS sought to implement this shift as part of the “Buy American, Hire American” initiative, aiming to ensure that highly skilled foreign workers offered substantially higher wages received priority in the visa allocation process.
Chief Guest Dr. Sam Pitroda, telecom pioneer and development thinker, underscored the need to harness AI for societal benefit.
• Prashant Gupta (Public Policy Advisor)
– Outlined a three-step approach to building effective AI solutions.
Key takeaways highlighted AI’s growing role in future industries, the importance of smart adoption, and its potential as a tool for personal and professional growth.
GOPIO also announced:
• Monthly webinars on technology and social impact.
• An international symposium on AI and quantum computing in 2026.
• Expansion of chapters in Boston, Nashville, South Jersey, and Pune.
The next webinar, “Ancient Wisdom –Modern Maladies,” will take place on September 13, 2025.
Founded in 1989, GOPIO is a global, non-partisan organization dedicated to uniting the Indian diaspora, promoting education, collaboration, and community development worldwide.
WASHINGTON, DC- The United States allows citizens of 41 countries to visit without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), designed to promote tourism and business while safeguarding security. Eligible travelers can stay for up to 90 days, provided they comply with strict conditions. A key requirement is obtaining approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure. ESTA is a quick online application where travelers submit passport and trip details, answer security questions, and pay a $21 fee. Most approvals arrive within 72 hours, and once granted, ESTA remains valid for two years (or until the passport expires). During this time, travelers can make multiple visits, but each must not exceed 90 days.
The VWP applies to nations across Europe, Asia, and Oceania, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Countries such as India and China are not part of the program, meaning their citizens require traditional visas.
