Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent Count Raphael Bostic, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, among the growing and vocal majority who support reparations as a way to address the consequences of racism and inequality in America. “There are definitely merits to it in the sense that, if people have been harmed by laws, then there should be a discussion about redress,” Bostic told CNN Business in an interview posted on Monday, March 29. “The legacies of past racism are still present in our society,” said Bostic, who in 2017 became the first Black president of a regional Fed bank. “We have to think about what things are necessary to offset the impacts of those old systems that still flow through.” In the interview, Bostic specifically called out systemic obstacles that inhibit wealth building among minorities, including redlining and other forms of housing discrimination. “We have African Americans today who have a lot less wealth,” he said, “in part because they have not been able to inherit the wealth that would have accrued had their ancestors been able to accrue that wealth.” As federal lawmakers ponder H.R. 40, legislation led by Congresswoman Sheila JacksonLee (D-Texas) that forms a commission to study reparations, some U.S. municipalities have moved to address systemic racism and forms of redress to African Americans.
Oakland, Calif., Mayor Libby Schaaf announced that the city would begin a guaranteed income project that would provide $500 per month to Black and Indigenous families. The assistance, which targets low-income families of color in the 426,000-population city, will last 18 months. Mayor Schaaf detailed that the money comes with “no-strings attached,” and recipients can use it as they please. “We have designed this demonstration project to add to the body of evidence and to begin this relentless campaign to adopt a guaranteed income federally,” Mayor Schaaf told the local ABC News station. Evanston, Illinois, a city where 18 percent of its more than 74,500 residents are Black, approved the Local Reparations Restorative Housing Program, which provides up to $25,000 for housing down payments or home repairs to African Americans. In September, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law historic legislation that paves the way for African Americans and descendants of slaves in the Golden State to receive reparations for slavery. The bill, authored by California Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, establishes a nine-person task force that will study the impact of the slave trade on Black people. It does not commit to any specific payment, but the task force will make recommendations to legislators about what kind of
compensation should be provided, who should receive it, and what form it would take. “A f t e r wat ch i ng [t he presidential] debate, this signing can’t come too soon,” Newsome declared during a videoconference with lawmakers and other stakeholders, including the rapper Ice Cube, who championed the bill. “As a nation, we can only truly thrive when every one of us has the opportunity to thrive. Our painful history of slavery has evolved into structural racism and bias built into and permeating throughout our democratic and economic institutions,” the governor stated. Last summer, Asheville, a North Carolina city where Black people make up just 11 percent of the more than 92,000 residents, formally apologized for its role in slavery. The City Council voted unanimously to provide reparations to African American residents and their descendants. “Hundreds of years of Black blood spilled that fills the cup we drink from today,” said Councilman Keith Young, one of two African American members of the City Council that voted 7-0 in favor of reparations. “It is simply not enough to remove statutes. Black people in this country are dealing with systemic issues,” Young declared. Asheville’s resolution doesn’t include monetary payments to African Americans but promises investments in areas where Black people face disparities. Earlier this year, Congress
debated H.R. 40, a bill that doesn’t place a specific monetary value on reparations but focuses on investigating and presenting the facts and truth about the unprecedented centuries of brutal enslavement of African people, racial healing, and transformation. The bill would fund a commission to study and develop proposals for providing reparations to African Americans. The Commission’s mission includes identifying the role of federal and state governments in supporting the institution of slavery, forms of discrimination in public and private sectors against freed slaves and their descendants, and lingering adverse effects of slavery on living African Americans and society. Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who sits on numerous House committees, including Judiciary, Budget, and Homeland Security, has made the reparations legislation her top priority during the 117th Congress. “I think if people begin to associate this legislation with what happened to the descendants of enslaved Africans as a human rights violation, the sordid past that violated the human rights of all of us who are descendants of enslaved Africans, I think that we can find common ground to pass this legislation,” Congresswoman Jackson Lee pronounced. “Can anyone imagine that we’ve never gotten a simple, effective, deeply-embedded, and well-respected apology?”

Evan Frost/MPR News Officials in Brooklyn Center, Minn., called the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, the result of an "accidental discharge" of a gun by a police officer. At a press conference Monday, Brooklyn Center police Chief Tim Gannon played body camera footage of the shooting, saying its circumstances demanded transparency. "It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet," Gannon said. "This appears to me, from what I've viewed and the officer's reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright." Mayor Mike Elliott announced Monday afternoon that the City Council had given him direct control over police operations. The fatal encounter began just before 2 p.m. local time Sunday when Brooklyn Center police pulled over Wright after noticing his car had expired tags, Gannon said. (Wright's girlfriend was in the passenger seat, according to his mother.) When police discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant, he said, the officers attempted arrest. (Police did not immediately have details about what the warrant was for.) The video clip shown Monday began as the officer wearing the camera arrived on the scene of the traffic stop already underway. The video shows another officer
speaking to Wright, who exited the white Buick sedan and turned around to be handcuffed. As the other officer began to handcuff him, Wright appeared to pull his hands away and duck back into the car. As the first officer attempted to restrain Wright, the officer wearing the body camera ran toward the open door and drew her handgun. She yelled, "Taser," three times, then fired a shot. Immediately afterward, she said, "Holy s***, I just shot him" as the car drove away. The car continued for several blocks before crashing into another vehicle, authorities said. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting. Investigators from the bureau were not present at the Monday press conference; Gannon said the bureau did "not condone" the release of the video and left the decision to him. On his choice to release the video within 24 hours of the shooting, Gannon said: "I felt the community needed to know what happened. They needed to see it. I needed to be transparent. And I want to be forthright, with due respect to Daunte as well." The officer who fired the shot has not been named but was described by Gannon as "a very senior officer" and has been placed on administrative leave. Biden's Promise to Diversify the Courts By Ben Jealous
Ben Jealous People who care about equal justice under the law should be very happy about President Joe Biden’s first set of judicial nominees. I am especially excited about the three outstanding Black women that President Biden nominated to the circuit courts—the appeals court level just below the U.S. Supreme Court. You will soon be hearing more about all these highly credentialed and accomplished women: Ketanji Brown Jackson, Candace Jackson-Akiwumi, and Tiffany Cunningham. Biden is fulfilling his promise to bring professional diversity to courts that are dominated by former prosecutors and corporate lawyers. Ketanji Brown Jackson and Candace Jackson-Akiwumi both have experience as public defenders. Jackson is now a federal district judge who was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 2013. Biden has pledged to nominate the first Black woman to the U.S. Supreme Court. These nominees are a good sign that he intends to keep that promise, too. It is shameful that the Seventh Circuit, which has jurisdiction over diverse cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis, currently has only white judges. The confirmation of JacksonAkiwumi will change that. The confirmation of Tiffany Cunningham will make her the first Black judge ever to serve on the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.
These brilliant women will also bring other perspectives that are sorely lacking on the courts. Judge Jackson was vice chair and commissioner on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, where she advocated for ending the brutally unjust and anti-Black discrepancy between sentences for crack cocaine and powder cocaine. As a public defender, Candace Jackson-Akiwumi represented more than 400 people who could not afford a lawyer. Tiffany Cunningham has been nominated to the specialized federal circuit, which needs judges familiar with science and technology issues. Cunningham not only has a law degree from Harvard, but a degree in chemical engineering from MIT. She has been repeatedly named to legal publications’ lists of the country’s best lawyers. She is impressive. This is history in the making, not just for these judges but for all the people who will be influenced by their decisions. Legendary civil rights advocate Mary Frances Berry recently wrote, “When the American people voted in November, we chose a new Congress and administration that we believed would deliver change. That means passing legislation that actually helps everyday people, not just the rich and powerful. It also means having the right people in key positions to bring that ‘real people’ focus to policymaking and to upholding the law.” As Berry pointed out, the success of these trailblazing women will also create new opportunities for the women and girls who follow them. Former President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees were overwhelmingly white—around four percent of his judges are Black —and mostly picked for their loyalty to a right-wing judicial ideology that sacrifices individual rights and the common good to states’ rights and the power of corporations. Because even if you’re kind of aware and your heart’s in the right place, when you don’t actively do something, it still perpetuates the status quo.” In 2018, Huynh and her colleagues interviewed 50 parents and their children at the school about their goals for teaching their children about racial justice, focusing on privilege, taking action, awareness of racism, valuing diversity, egalitarianism, how informed they were about race, anti-racism, empathy and racial and ethnic identity. Huynh noted that previous studies indicate that racial colorblindness is a common goal of white families. For some families, it is because they believe that racism is no longer an issue in America, while others believe that ignoring race will prevent racism. “The colorblind ideology was less common among the people we talked to,” she said. “Instead, the parents in this study shared more ‘color-conscious’ goals — goals that acknowledge the importance of race in society. “For example, parents who expressed informed goals explicitly wanted their children to be aware of and to ask questions about race,” Huynh said. “Even as a few parents suggested that colorblindness might be a goal ‘if everything was equal out in the world,’ they recognized that racial disparities persist in our country and, therefore, felt that colorblindness was inappropriate.

Police still exist to uphold white supremacy and have been empowered by laws and the courts to inject themselves into Black life for any reason, no matter how minor, even a dangling air freshener. It is apparent there is no legal reform or departmental policy change that will alter this dichotomy and no amount of training that will prevent situations like this from happening. customs regarding ethnicity to their children — a practice called ethnic-racial socialization. Their first paper on the subject, “From Kindness and Diversity to Justice and Action: White Parents’ Ethnic-Racial Socialization Goals,” was published last month in the Journal of Family Issues. “White people benefit from the racial status quo, but for decades, parents of white children have been silent about race,” said Huynh, who teaches in CSUN College of Health and Human Development. “Now, racism is at the top of America’s agenda, and white parents are hungry for guidance on how to address racial equity. Understanding how white parents practice ethnic-racial socialization is an important step toward racial justice.” Huynh and her colleagues — Cari Gillen-O’Neel, a psychology professor at Macalester College; Taylor Hazelbaker, a doctoral candidate in human development and psychology at UCLA; and Asya Harrison, a doctoral candidate in education and psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor — are studying the parents of children at a K-8 school located in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area that includes social and racial justice as part of its educational mission. “There are a lot of people who are like ‘I’m progressive. I care about liberal issues. I am enrolling my kids in this school, and the school will take care of this for me. So, I’m good,’” Huynh said. “But it takes an extra level of effort

The 20-year-old was shot and killed by Brooklyn Center police after being pulled over due to air fresheners hanging in his rearview mirror. Mr. Wright’s killing is one of over 260 police killings that have taken place in just the first three and a half months of 2021, and happened less than 10 miles north of the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer responsible for the death of George Floyd. Many of my fondest childhood memories were framed at the Church. I had the pleasure of living much of my formative years with my grandparents, specifically the Reverend Zechariah Alexander Peter James John Figures, known to the public and his fellow pulpiteers as Z. R. Living in the Goodwill Baptist Church’s parsonage just 60 feet diagonally from the steps of the sanctuary taught me a lot. Anything I didn’t glean from Papa’s strap, I learned by watching the people who came in and around the perimeter of the Church. Most of the “welltrained” pedestrians who strolled the streets paid strict obeisance to the stature and the church grounds’ sanctity. If a smoker walked by, he extinguished his cigarette and resumed his puff sensation after he was well beyond the front door. Likewise, winos, jickheads and drunks, secured their serum safely in their posterior pockets as
they made their sinful procession toward home or some den of ill repute. It was not enough that their liquor was hidden in pint-sized paper bags; they eased by as if the church walls impaired God’s vision. Of course, Rev. Figures had taught us that God was omnipresent and omniscient, so we knew these sinners were paying their respects. God had the “whole world in his hands,” and it was just his “Amazing Grace” that allowed those sinners to live. I was not smok-ing and drinking then, but I knew I was a sinner, too, just a different kind. The Church; every Church in our community was sacred. You would have thought Jesus could see you from each pic-ture frame. It was the place where I learned what it means to be a “gentleman.” Our mothers had a healthy disdain for heathens and took stringent measures to see that we did not fall among the brood of them. Once we were in Church, we could not chew gum, talk, or fidget. My mother scolded me often for having the nerve to put my hands in my pocket as I stood for prayer. She deemed it disrespectful to

While at CSU Bakersfield, Freeman-Patton was named 2018 Administrator of the Year by Women Leaders in College Sports. She was responsible for the day-to-day operations and served as sport administrator for women’s basketball, baseball, men’s soccer, softball, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving, while also overseeing strength and conditioning, sports medicine, compliance, and the center for student success. She also created and oversaw CSUB’s first-ever Varsity Club, which added more than 70 donors in the first year. Freeman-Patton led the efforts to secure an $870,000 NCAA Accelerated Academic Success Program grant that contributed to the opening of the $1 million Kegley Center for Student Success. Assisting in the operational oversight of 16 sports, FreemanPatton led the development and facilitation of the department
strategic plan. She also served on the Roadrunner Scholarship Fund Board that raised $833,852 during the 2018-19 fiscal year, an increase of nearly 140 percent since 2012-13. She was integral in the renovation and construction of the Kegley Center for Student Success. Freeman-Patton was pivotal in garnering $300,000 in capital fundraising for the softball facility and $75,000 for sports medicine and swimming and diving. An athletic administrator for over 20 years, Freeman-Patton was the associate athletic director at Georgia State University (200713), associate director of academics and career development at the University of Maryland (200507) and academic coordinator at North Carolina State University (2002-05). Freeman-Patton lettered as a basketball student-athlete at Liberty University, earning a bachelor’s degree in sports management in 1996. She received a master’s in sports administration from Georgia State in 1999. He never condoned clapping as a matter of applause or keeping the beat of the music. He could never have accepted the instruments and “worldly music” that domi-nate today’s church services. God was God, the world was the world, and never the two were twain. There were several occasions when I despised my rigorous religious regimen. I grew weary of attending Sunday School, Worship Service, and three o’clock Teas with all the older women. The mints, peanuts, punch, and cookies were good. However, in the back of my mind, I knew we still had B.T.U. (Baptist Training Union) ahead of us at six post meridiem. All that good religion came rushing back to me the other day as I heard the news that another young Black man was gunned down. Which one? Pick one! Similar murders are happening
among our Brown brothers. What have we become? What are we teaching this generation? My childhood has long since been gone, but some images do not die. I finally rid my subconscious of that “White Jesus” that “Lorded” over the walls of seemingly every Black Church. Nevertheless, I cling to the Ten Commandments, and “Thou Shall Not Kill” is chief among them. America does not have the answer for the growing issues of men and violence. Young men of all races seem less inhibited about taking another life. We politicize their espoused beliefs, but frankly, whether they quote Trump, Farrakhan, or The KKK is less critical than their propensity to use lethal force as an option. Witness For Justice#1042
Possibilities Katie Adams Last year I wrote my Witness for Justice column as the world shut down. I remember struggling to write about celebrating the empty tomb and singing Alleluias in a world that reflected back not joy but sorrow. I was reminded then of why we choose faith over and over, often when it seems hopeless. Those tendrils of faith anchored and held me fast through the chaos of the year. Now, as a miraculously quick vaccine rolls out to many, we can see the possibility of a world beyond the pandemic. I am hopeful, though, that our rebuilding doesn’t just copy our past. That in our haste to erect normalcy (whatever that means) we don’t slide back into “how it’s always been done,” with our collective muscle memory pulling us away from a more inclusive and just future. Let’s instead allow ourselves to examine this world with Easter imagination, believing in a risen Savior whose bedrock principle is love for one another. How might a world built with love as its cornerstone operate? Let’s imagine a world of abundance where countries and companies don’t horde vaccines but share them freely, realizing that our health relies on that of our neighbor, both across the street and across the world. As office buildings stand empty, could we redesign our collective spaces so no one goes without a home and a roof over their head? Could we
imagine a society that no longer allows for and accepts that one in six kids goes hungry while billionaires grew their net worth collectively by nearly 1 trillion dollars during the pandemic. Let’s not be so quick to dismantle our Covid-safe infrastructures that we overlook the accessibility they created for many: conferences and classrooms, comedy shows and open mikes offered online have made community and culture available to those unable to physically leave their homes or be in those spaces. One of the things I’ve been astonished by this year is the resilience of humanity, our ability to grow and adapt to circumstance in crisis. But like a rubber band pulled taunt, as soon as the pressure leaves it bounces back. Before accepting that we’ll automatically be pulled back, we can make a choice to incorporate new practices of inclusion and equity, with an outlook of abundance rather than scarcity. My hope is that we allow ourselves the space to both universally and individually imagine a world restored, and what that might be for each of us. At The Movies’ Godzilla VS Kong Movie Review By Michael Hernandez Entertainment Reporter &Texas Metro News Columnist
‘If you like Old School Monster Movies, you’re going to love Godzilla VS Kong. The two iconic monsters battle it out in a new film that is a sequel to two movies, 2014’s Godzilla King of The Monsters and 2017’s Kong Skull Island. Back in 2010, Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights to both monsters and for nearly 10 years they’ve been developing a movie with the two titans as adversaries. The film was originally to be released in 2019 in theaters but was, of course, delayed by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kong gets the majority of the film’s screen time. When the movie starts, he’s
back on Skull Island and being constantly monitored by a company’s team of scientists. Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) is the head of the Kong observation team and her adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a young deaf girl who develops a special bond with Kong, is communicating with him through sign language. The observation team decides to use Kong to lead them to Hollow Earth, a legendary space that lies at the center of the earth. They face all kinds of creatures inside Hollow Earth and with Kong’s help; they escape to find some type of emergence going on that leads both Kong and Godzilla to
Hong Kong for an epic showdown. Armed with a giant battle ax, found in Hollow Earth, which is made of one of Godzilla’s dorsal fins, the two titanic monsters wage battle in the streets of Hong Kong; doing destruction to the entire city. The fight scenes between the two monsters are epic and made me wish I could have viewed the film on the big screen. All of the movie’s CGI effects and the film’s cinematography are amazing. The movie is well worth the wait. In the end, Godzilla and Kong have to team up to defeat a robotic Godzillalooking creature with the fate of the world lying in the balance.
The movie ends with the possibility of a sequel in the Monster Universe. It just depends on how the film is received by the movie-going public. (Which has been good so far. It made over $9 million on its opening day in theaters.) The movie will be shown on HBO Max for the entire month of April and is also currently showing in movie theaters. "So to have a police shooting involved in our community and killing a young man is heartbreaking and unfathomable," he said, his voice breaking. "Let me be clear: We will get to the bottom of this; we will do all that is within our power to make sure that justice is done for Daunte Wright." In a video posted to Twitter by a reporter with local TV news station KARE, Wright's mother, Katie Wright, said she was on the phone with her son during the police stop. After sounds of a scuffle and a voice ordering Daunte Wright to put the phone down, she said the call disconnected. When she called back, she said, his girlfriend answered and said Daunte had been shot. Katie Wright told Minnesota Public Radio that her son had been taking his new car to get it washed before he was pulled over. By the time Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigators arrived on the scene following the crash, a crowd of roughly 100 people had gathered, according to officials. Over the course of the afternoon and evening, the crowds grew and shifted to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, where the protests lasted well into the night. Shortly before midnight, police declared an unlawful assembly and dispersed the crowd with tear gas and flash-bang grenades, according to Minnesota Public Radio; by the end of the protest, two people were arrested. "It was terrifying how fast there was that many police officers armed to the teeth who
could respond that quickly," said Matthew Branch, a Brooklyn Center resident who attended Sunday's protests. "They were aggressive, they were intimidating, they were agitating the crowd, and you could feel the energy change when they left the vicinity." Local media and law enforcement officials also reported damage and looting in the nearby Shingle Creek Crossing shopping center. At least 20 businesses were targeted, officials said, including Walmart, Foot Locker and Icon Beauty Supply. There was also scattered looting in other parts of Minneapolis. In a press conference Monday afternoon, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, called on the state Legislature to take up more substantive police reform legislation than a compromise bill passed in last summer's special session, which some liberals criticized then as not transformational enough. "We can either come together and fix this, or we can suffer together as fools," he said. The mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul both declared states of emergency and ordered curfews beginning at 7 p.m. Monday. "We have to ask ourselves why and how does this keep happening over and over and over again in America, in the world, in Minnesota?" said St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, evoking the names of Philando Castile and George Floyd, two other Black men killed by police in the Twin Cities area. "You will see a robust assortment of National Guard, state and local police departments working together over the next two or three days as we once again prepare for the trial, and also are prepared for any further civil unrest that may come from the Brooklyn Center officer-involved shooting," Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said at a press conference Monday morning. Officers and Guardsmen remained deployed outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department and at the Shingle Creek Crossing shopping center, where business owners and employees turned out Monday morning to see the damage and begin cleaning up. Defense attorney Eric Nelson noted that one juror lives in Brooklyn Center and others have "connections" to the area, and he argued that Sunday's unrest following a police shooting there could make them less willing to acquit Chauvin. "The emotional response that that case creates sets the stage for a jury to say, 'I'm not going to vote not guilty because I'm concerned about the outcome,' " Nelson said. Many wanted to raise children who would work to end racial inequalities and embrace the difficulty of being anti-racist.” Those latter goals posed a quandary for some parents, Huynh said. While they wanted their children to be part of the effort to end racial inequalities, some parents still believed their children were racially “naïve,” weren’t sure how to discuss race in “developmentally appropriate” ways and were hesitant to destroy the “innocence” of childhood. “Though all these parents shared progressive, politically liberal beliefs, when it came to taking on difficult topics, parents’ individual goals spanned a range from shallow to deeper engagement,” Huynh said. “Some families tended toward multiple, shallow goals — vague awareness of privilege and racism — whereas others tended toward multiple, deeper goals — embracing the difficulty of being anti-racist and taking specific action to address racism in systemic settings. Not all parents’ practices aligned with their stated goals and beliefs.” The parents were first interviewed three years ago. Since then, there has been a national racial reckoning following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, as well as increased
reports of race-based hate crimes. Huynh and her colleagues are now interviewing the parents to see if those incidents have changed how they teach their children about racial inequality. The researchers have received funding to expand their study to include other schools, teachers and families. “We’re asking teachers about their practices and values with regards to racial equity,” Huynh said. “We’re curious to know what impact teachers’ practices have on children’s ideas about race. “We pu r posely chose Minnesota, not places like Los Angeles and New York, to see if we could get a sense of what people are doing and talking about with other white people in a mostly white community,” she said. “How do you talk about racism if you don’t have Black neighbors or neighbors of color and you don’t witness racism? How do you get out in front of the issue? We can do all this research on progressive white people living in progressive communities, but we need to know what other people, living in different communities, are thinking about if we want to change minds and move in the direction where we are more inclusive — so that kids can grow up in a world where they can interact with other people in meaningful, constructive ways.”

Multi-Million Dollar Statewide "Let's Get to ImmUnity" Campaign Will Address Questions, Concerns With COVID-19 Vaccinations Specific to the Black and African American Community SACR AMENTO- Ahead of expanded eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine on April 15 for all Californians aged 16+, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is rolling out tailored outreach for Black and African American communities across the state. This latest element of the "Let's Get to ImmUnity" public education campaign is part of the state's overall Vaccinate ALL 58 effort. The "Let's Get to ImmUnity" integrated media campaign launched statewide in early March as part of a broader $40 million effort to offer answers and reassurance that COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and our greatest tool to end the pandemic. With the help of radio, print, social media, TV and billboard advertisements, the campaign aims to reach all Californians, with a focus on multicultural and multilingual media outlets. Heart failure is real, and it often begins with high blood pressure. It’s a silent killer in the African American community. If you aren’t experiencing high blood pressure, then you most likely know someone who is. According to the American Heart Association, more than 40 percent of Blacks are living with high blood pressure. Blacks have the highest prevalence of the disease than any other race. Some experts believe, however, that one vegetable is the key to preventing heart diseases such as high blood pressure.
Beet Juice Researchers found the link between a stiffening heart and high blood pressure, which makes the heart muscle thicken. In the 2010 study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, experts learned that half a liter of beet juice can do wonders for a young man’s diet. It improved their exercise and performance each day. Another study, in 2011, found that people ages 54 to 80 also improved their peripheral vascular disease with beet juice. Kombucha Odds are you’ve seen this “it” drink slowly infiltrating the outer edges of your grocery store. You may have even tried it in an attempt to appear “in the know.” However, the benefits of kombucha (fermented tea) lie not in the “coolness factor”, but in the probiotics. Countless studies have shown that regular consumption (more than eight weeks) of probiotics can help to reduce blood pressure and even help maintain healthy blood pressure.
Hibiscus tea Hibiscus is packed with bioactive phytochemicals, which are natural ACE inhibitors. Studies show that this tea can be used to lower blood pressure. Low-fat milk As more studies come out about the need for us to drink less cow’s milk and look for alternatives, this can be an exception. Studies have found calcium to be beneficial to lower blood pressure levels. Don’t go for the full-fat and whole milk, though. Low-fat milk has more calcium and doesn’t contain the added fat found in whole milk. Fresh Cranberry Juice Pomegranate juice Not only is it tasty, but it’s healthy for those with hypertension. Those ACE inhibitors can also be found in pomegranates. In one study, this
juice reduced ACE – an enzyme that can raise blood pressure – by 36 percent.
Cranberry juice This juice is good for more than just UTIs. Filled with antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, cranberry juice can prevent any spikes in blood pressure. It can also dilate blood vessels, which increases blood flow. Be sure to get the unsweetened version of cranberry juice, as the added sugar is no good for your heart. Water It may sound cliche’, but water is one of the healthiest way to manage hypertension, of course (you already knew that, right?). With dehydration, blood vessels can constrict and the body goes into water-saving mode. Therefore, the body reduces the amount of water loss through sweat, urination, and breathing. Your heart works harder, and your blood pressure goes up.

In addition to traditional communication channels, the campaign will also meet people where they are via community engagement efforts throughout the state. These efforts will begin in Oakland, where the campaign will partner with small businesses and community leaders serving the local Black and African American community to increase awareness of the safety and efficacy of the vaccines and mobilize community members to get vaccinated. The campaign will take a ground-up approach to these efforts providing informational materials that can be displayed in stores, shared with customers, or amplified on social channels. Community engagement efforts will expand to Black and African American communities across the state as the campaign continues and will remain focused
on increasing vaccine equity. The "Let's Get to ImmUnity" campaign is placing additional focus on geographic areas in the bottom quarter of the Healthy Places Index (HPI), mirroring the state's announcement last month to increase vaccine supply in these communities. The public education campaign is an important part in the state's five-part plan for equitable vaccine administration. Other parts of the plan include: Increasing the state's vaccines supply allocated to the lowest 25 percent of ZIP codes based on the Public Health Alliance of Southern California's HPI, and reserving appointments for priority populations through My Turn. Emergency rent relief coming soon for county residents County/Local /News
San Bernardino County has established the San Bernardino County Rent Relief Partnership, an emergency rental assistance program that will leverage more than $46.8 million in federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 funds to provide rental and utility assistance to county residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The County has teamed up with Inland SoCal 211+ (ISC211) to administer the San Bernardino County RRP, which will provide up to 12 months of rental arrears and/or prospective rent payments, as well as utility arrears and prospective assistance. “This program will bring muchneeded relief to tenants trying desperately to stay in their homes and, in turn, landlords who have been hard-hit by the economic effects of the pandemic,” said County Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “The county’s partnership with Inland SoCal 211+ is a key step toward economic recovery for our region.” The county’s program will target its efforts to the most
vulnerable individuals/households that have experienced the greatest impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Households must meet the following criteria to receive assistance: Household Eligibility Household must reside within San Bernardino County. Residents of the cities of Fontana and San Bernardino must submit applications directly to their respective cities for assistance. Applicants from these cities who apply for the County’s program will be redirected to their applicable programs. Household must be obligated to pay rent on a residential dwelling and have a household income at or below 50% of area median income (AMI). See Table 1: Table 1 Number of Persons in Household 1 2 3
