It isn’t known how he became infected, but Jean-Pierre said the president previously tested negative on Tuesday, July 19. “Out of an abundance of transparency, the White House will provide a daily update on the President’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation,” Jean-Pierre stated. Per standard protocol for any positive case at the White House, the White House Medical Unit will inform all close contacts of the President during the day today, including any Members of Congress and any members of the press who interacted with the President during yesterday’s travel, she said.

San Bernardino Police Avoid DOJ Investigation by Claiming Black Man They Shot Had a Gun Antonio Ray Harvey | California Black Media The officer-involved shooting of 23-year-old Rob Marquise Adams in San Bernardino on July 16 has put the spotlight on a law that requires state prosecutors in California to investigate such incidents. Authored by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento), Secretary of the California Legislative Black Caucus, Assembly Bill (AB) 1506 requires the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate “incidents of an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian.” While an investigation would appear to be warranted in the Adams shooting case, DOJ stated in a July 22 email to California Black Media (CBM), “We’re aware of the incident. However, our office is not currently involved under AB 1506. At this point, local authorities are best-positioned to comment on the matter.” That’s because the San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) is claiming Adams had a gun, so an unarmed civilian was not involved. Adams was shot multiple times in the back while running away from SBPD officers. The officers arrived in an unmarked sedan after receiving information that a Black man armed with a handgun was in the parking lot of a business known to house

San Bernardino Police Avoid DOJ Investigation by Claiming Black Man They Shot Had a Gun... continued critical to maintain public trust.” Currently, Attorney General Rob Bonta and DOJ have 21 officer-involved shootings under investigation in jurisdictions such as Anaheim, Salinas, Fontana, Adelanto, San Francisco, Fresno, Bakersfield, and Los Angeles and Riverside counties. More than 42 law enforcement officers are being investigated and their cases are under review for potential criminal liability, according to the DOJ. The DOJ recently opened up an investigation of a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed an unarmed man in Adelanto on June 21 following a vehicle stop. DOJ said in a written statement. “Following notification by local authorities, the California Department of Justice’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team for Southern California deployed to the scene of the incident. Alongside other law enforcement partners, the California Department of Justice is investigating.” What concerns the Adams family, according to their attorneys, is from what they viewed in the video shared widely on social media, is that Adams appeared unaware that police officers were in the unmarked car. Adams could have believed that he was about to be robbed or attacked. The officers’version of the events declares that when they exited their vehicle, they gave Adams verbal commands before opening fire. He immediately ran toward “two parked vehicles with the gun in

his right hand,” Goodman said. The gun the police recovered at the scene of the shooting, was a black 9mm Taurus G3C with a round in the chamber, and 10 rounds in the magazine Goodman said SBPD is conducting an administrative investigation to ensure department policies and procedures were followed. He also stated that the SB County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and is conducting a parallel investigation, which is ongoing. “Our goal is to be transparent with the community and share as much information as possible when critical incidents occur,” Goodman said. “It is unfortunate that our efforts to keep the community safe through proactive police work occasionally results in encounters with armed felons. Our officers face this danger daily in an effort to help make our community safer.” Goodman asks the public and the media to allow his department to complete its investigation and gather all the facts. Adams family lawyers say they will file a lawsuit on behalf of the Adams family. “Make no mistake about it, this is not the first time that we’ve seen them unjustly kill a young Black person. They shoot first and ask questions later,” Crump said. “And then after they assassinate our bodies…they then assassinate our character. They're going to say all kinds of lies and innuendos to say, ‘Hold on, Rob wasn’t worth it.’ Well, we want you to know that Rob’s life mattered.”

I have proof on my phone the exact time that they killed my son that I was on the phone with him.” As of July 1, 2021, it’s been DOJ’s responsibility to investigate officer-involved shootings that result in the death of an unarmed civilian. On July 16, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline hotline officially became the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The service also launched a new quick dial hotline number for California residents. Californians can now call or text 9-8-8 any time of day, seven days a week, to reach trained counselors who can help with mental health or substance abuse crises. Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, a Los Angeles-based mental health services provider and a leader in whole-person mental health care and suicide prevention for nearly 80 years and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) were the two organizations central to implementing the new hotline. "9-8-8 is now active across the United States. This new, shorter phone number will make it easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis services,"

the hotline's website reads. Formed in 2005 and led by SAMHSA, the hotline has over 200 crisis centers that callers are routed based on their area code. When the 9-8-8 hotline l a u n c h e d , G o v. G a v i n Newsom's office tweeted "help is closer than you think" before tweeting the new number. Aside from rhetoric promising a commitment to mental health, Newsom proposed $7.5 Million for one time start-up costs and $6 Million in ongoing funding for the 9-8-8 hotline. The Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church's Commission on Social Action held a community meeting on aging last Thursday in San Bernardino with representatives from the California Department of Aging (CDA) and the Bernardino County's Department of Aging and Adult Services. Held in the sanctuary, the discussion featured state representatives and Social Action commission members led by former Assemblymember and Commission Chair Cheryl Brown, who represented the 47th Assembly District in San Bernardino County from 2012 to 2016. Brown spoke with community members and leaders from San Bernardino and Riverside counties about programs and resources available for elderly Californians and the caregivers who look after them. “The state has set aside millions of dollars to help older Californians have a better quality of life through the master plan on aging. And caregiving is 4th of the 5 goals established in the state’s

care of elderly Black people in the Inland Empire. A major theme of the discussion was ensuring familiar (traditional) modes and channels of communications were being employed to reach Black elders. Sharon Nevins, director of San Bernardino County's Department of Aging and Adult Services, spoke about ways in which the county has been involved in addressing those concerns. "We have staff out there in the community, putting information in hands," said Nevins. Nevins emphasized the significance of Black churches and their unique influence on Black elders in California. "We definitely reach out to the churches. We've always done that," Sharon Nevins DeMarois hailed San Bernardino as a model for the rest of the state because the city has been "meeting the needs of the whole person." According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), California was tied with Hawaii in 2019 for the states with the nation's highest life expectancy

The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) is eager to enroll the Class of 2035 to start school on Monday, August 1. Families may enroll now or at the Saturday, July 30 SBCUSD Enrollment Fair. Online enrollment for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in SBCUSD is underway. Children who will be 5 years old by September 1, 2022, are eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 2022–2023 school year. Transitional kindergarten (TK) is available for students who will turn 5 years old from September 2, 2022, to February 2, 2023. Kindergarten is an important academic milestone for children. Since most kindergarteners only attend for half a day, it provides children a chance to get used to a school schedule before they are required to attend for a full day. Kindergarten students also learn a number of skills that are

DeMarois, much like Nevins, acknowledged that a large portion of the state’s plan to reach Black elders is through local churches. "It's multi-pronged," said DeMarois. "We know in the Black community faith is a proven path." One of the organizations mentioned during the community meeting – an organization that DeMarois claims she took note of – is the Inland Empire Pastor's Association. DeMarois expressed the need for the state and local agencies to implement "coordinated strategies" to approach challenges facing the state's aging population

Jennifer Christian-Herman, from Blue Shield of California, believes that the change to 9-8-8 is a "powerful indication of how seriously we're taking suicide and mental health as a country." Christian-Herman said that the 9-8-8 phone/text line will "help save many lives." One of the goals of this quick dial hotline number is to divert people in crisis to mental health specialists as opposed to going through the 9-1-1 emergency line and potentially dealing with responders who might not be as equipped to address mental health related episodes. California has alternative options for people suffering from a crisis but who do not feel like they are

at the point of committing suicide. One such alternative is California’s mental health "warm line." Operated by CalHOPE and the Mental Health Association of San Francisco, the service is designed to assist people in non-emergency situations. The peer-run warm line (Call 855-845-7415 to speak to a counselor) started in 2014 and has received over 185,000 calls since 2019, according to the Mental Health Association of San Francisco This organization is currently looking to secure annual funding for this program through 2027. "We provide assistance via phone and web chat on a nondiscriminatory basis to anyone in need," the organization's website reads. "Some concerns callers share are challenges with interpersonal relationships, anxiety, pain, depression, finances, alcohol/drug use, etc."

Homeschooling is on the rise throughout the country. Education expert Jill Simonian says it may be due, in part, to schools with a Marxist bent by John Grimaldi WASHINGTON, DC, July 22 -- The numbers of parents opting to homeschool their kids is on the rise in the U.S. for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is to provide religious or moral instruction. The Census Bureau reports that in the spring prior to the onset of the pandemic about 3% of children were being homeschooled, by the fall the numbers rose to 11.1%, and as covid selfisolation routines began to be relaxed, the rate of homeschooling has remained at high levels. Aiding the movement are a growing number of online resources such as PragerU Resources for Educators & Parents (PREP) and PragerU Kids whose Director of Outreach, Jill Simonian, says part of the reason homeschooling is on the rise is the Leftist political motivations of teachers and school officials. As she told Rebecca Weber, CEO of the Association of Mature American Citizens, during a recent interview for AMAC’s Better for America podcast, “our education system is being overtaken by Marxism and socialist movements.” Simonian says her mother and her sister were both schoolteachers and that she has always had respect and affection for formal schooling. “I was under this false impression. I was miseducated, if you will, that our public school system was still functioning in the way that it was maybe, you

know, 50, 60 years ago.” But it was during the covid lockdowns that her eyes were opened and she saw that her children were being indoctrinated “to hate America, to question themselves, to hate themselves, to think that America is a horrible place. I would see it happening firsthand, and I was shocked. I would see teachers and principals not wanting to do the Pledge of Allegiance.” Jill says that our education system is being hijacked nationwide as more and more schools embrace the so-called Critical Race Theory [CRT], which is designed “to divide and confuse, to weaken us as a society so that the government can ultimately have control.” Her advice to parents and grandparents is that it's time to wake up, to get involved at the school your children attend and to ask questions. “Go to the school's website and look at its mission statement. Look at what type of words they are using on their school website to talk about what the district or the school is really trying to implement.” And, she adds, be on the lookout for “dangerous code words that are linked to CRT, words such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and affinity groups. Tiena Johnson Hall, executive director California Housing Agency For many Californians of color, housing instability and inequity did not begin with the COVID-19 pandemic. Discriminatory housing and lending policies have long prevented communities of color from securing the right to stable housing. The gateway to homeownership – proven to be one of the most effective ways to build intergenerational wealth in America – has only drifted farther and farther out of reach for people of color in America and especially in California. While the pandemic did not create these issues, it has compounded them, forcing more families into vulnerable positions and putting their homeownership at risk. To those who are familiar with our country’s history, it is no surprise that Black and Latinx communities are especially impacted. The Little Hoover Commission found that over the course of the pandemic, Black and Latinx homeowners were more than two times as likely as white Americans to report being behind on their housing payments. Responding to the most recent chapter of this crisis, California has $1 billion in federal support available to homeowners at risk of losing their homes due to lost work, increased medical costs, and other hardships brought on or exacerbated by COVID-19 and the associated economic impacts. Launched in December 2021, the California Mortgage Relief Program has distributed grants of up to $80,000 to eligible homeowners from socially disadvantaged

communities, including families of color, who have fallen behind on their housing payments. Over the past six months, California has distributed relief funds to more than 2,800 households. Recent expansions to the program’s eligibility guidelines have opened the opportunity for even more homeowners to get caught up on missed housing payments. In July, the program celebrated distributing $100 million in relief to California homeowners. We have made it a point to embed ourselves in our local communities and connect with vulnerable homeowners in the language that is most accessible to them. As these families work to recover from the ongoing financial burdens of the pandemic, there should be no additional barriers for them to access these resources. A home goes beyond four walls and a roof. It is security. It is peace of mind. For many families, buying a home represents the unraveling of a system entrenched in inequality and lays the foundation of opportunity for future generations. This housing relief cannot undo a history of exclusionary practices, nor end a global pandemic, but it can ensure that whatever progress these families have made toward intergenerational wealth is not erased due to circumstances beyond their control. And that is the work we will continue to do for these families. For anyone suffering from inequality, we must always strive for better. For Californians who lost wages, lost jobs, or faced the tragedy of a lost loved one during this terrible pandemic – and especially for those who have faced the additional challenges of historical housing discrimination – the California Mortgage Relief Program is here to alleviate some of the burden. Bill Gates insists he’s optimistic about the future. One of the wealthiest men in the world said he sees incredible heroism and sacrifice all over the globe, especially as the Covid-19 pandemic continues. “Medical workers put in unbelievable hours at great risk to themselves to help people infected with COVID. Incredible efforts are taking place to help refugees from the Ukrainian war and to help those caught in battle zones,” Gates wrote on his personal blog. “Activists are courageously protesting and often risking their lives to protect people’s rights. People on the front lines inspire me to do whatever I can. Although each of us can only do so much, when lots of people join in, we will resume progress.” The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced it would significantly increase its already robust philanthropic efforts in areas including global health, economic development, gender equality, and education. The world’s largest charitable foundation will increase the rate of its grant-making from nearly $6 billion to $9 billion each year by 2026. Among its many efforts, the foundation sponsors the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) education program. “We need all sectors of society – government, the private sector, and the non-profit sector, including philanthropy – to engage on these issues,” Gates insisted. “Philanthropy is the smallest of these sectors, but it is unique in its ability to try risky ideas that can have a large impact if they succeed and are scaled up.” Despite the 2021 announcement that Gates and his wife, Melinda French Gates, were divorcing,

the couple has continued to make the foundation and charitable giving a primary focus. “I am putting a lot of my energy and resources into innovators working on pandemic prevention, global health, climate mitigation (including getting rid of dependence on hydrocarbons) and adaption, education, improvement (including remediation), and food costs. “When I say ‘innovation,’ I’m referring to new products and services as well as new ways of delivering them to those in need – including by strengthening local leaders and institutions,” Gates continued. “These innovations will not come in time to avoid the problems altogether, but the faster we move, the less people will suffer. Board of Supervisors Vote 5-0 in Response to American Rescue Plan Act funding towards Outdoor Community Healing Projects Government/Business/Financial News San Bernardino, CA- After encouraging the use of the response the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) had towards assisting the county for months, Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. alongside his colleagues on the County Board Supervisors approved a series of initial community investments that will enhance the lives of our youth in the cities of Rialto and San Bernardino. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) was signed into law on March 11, 2021, that established the $350 billion Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund to distribute key resources to state and local governments throughout the nation. The County of San Bernadino received approximately $420 million of those federal funds, and Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. immediately held a couple of community meetings last year where he solicited input on how best the county can invest these resources back into our community. Approved today, is Guadalupe Field Improvement Project - City of San Bernardino. Guadalupe Field is a 2.25-acre park that serves the community of San Bernardino City with a baseball field, picnic tables, and barbeque amenities Renovating Guadalupe Field will mitigate the negative impacts of COVID-19 by promoting healthier living environments as a result of encouraging community members to engage in outdoor and socially distanced physical activity. Projected expenditures of $995,000 will be funded by the ARPA Fund to renovate the existing building & field, upgrade lights, replace fences, install new bleachers and score

board, and acquire park amenities. The second community investment is the International Healing Garden Construction Project - Rialto Unified School District. The Rialto Unified School District (Rialto USD) plans to construct the 2.6-acre International Healing Garden at an estimated cost of $5.7 million. Of this estimated cost, $2 million will be funded from the San Bernardino County ARPA Fund. The objective of the International Healing Garden is to provide a physical location to support awareness and participation in local environmental issues, as well as physical and mental health. The students and families of Rialto USD experienced trauma in various forms during distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As students and families resumed in-person instruction, the need for physical and mental health became evident in the schools. This facility will include a full-size kitchen, classrooms, and technology features for meeting and public gathering. The academic instruction at this facility would focus students as well as the community at large on local climate vulnerabilities, climate resiliency, and community awareness about the green economy as well as developing shared identity around the stewardship of water, air and land. “I will continue to work and listen to the needs of the county’s 5th District to best put these resources to good use. First United Bank representatives with FoxandRob and literal partner in crime, giving adoration for her commitment to him after her own release from prison that led to Louisi­ ana Governor John Bel Edwards grant­ing him clemency in 2018. “The star of “Time” is none other than Fox Rich,” Rob Rich said. “Fox Rich is a mother of six outstanding sons; sons that I’m glad to have gone half with her on.” Drawing laughter from the crowd, he continued. “She is a published author, a cultur­ al provocateur, and according to His­torically Black Colleges and University students, she was considered the most realest speaker of the 21st century.” Rob Rich also said that in 2021, the Critics’ Choice Awards considered Fox Rich the most compelling subject of a documentary or film. “She is by far the most dynamic per­ s on that I’ve ever met in my life,” he said. With the audience gathered in the room and others joining virtually from First United Bank branches through­out Texas and Oklahoma, Rob Rich en­couraged a big Texas round of applause as Fox Rich made her way to the micro­phone. With her strong voice and personality, the Grambling State University graduate who holds a Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree in Public Admin­ istration schooled the crowd on social injustices and the innate will to fight for African Americans who break the law. Throughout their speech, FoxandRob emphatically admitted and took re­sponsibility for the bank robbery crime they committed. The focus was on the familial impact when at least one family member is incarcerated. “When they got one of us, they got all of us!” Fox Rich said. “They got our mon­ey, they got our time, they got our hearts, they got our minds. They got all of us!” She shared about her unrelenting fo­cus to bring her husband, a firsttime offender for taking $5000 and a property crime sentenced to 60 years in prison, home. Her efforts are on the miscarriages of justice and prevention. “If you know anybody Black, you’ve got to tell them that statistics and studies have proven that when people of color go before the criminal justice system, they do not receive the same justice that is given to people who have committed the same offenses that are of different race,” she said. “What does it mean to be free?” Fox Rich asked. “It wasn’t until I became a slave again that I understood.” Fox Rich cited how she enslaved herself by committing a crime, stating that she “checked herself

into slavery by breaking the law.” She shared scenarios of not having control of your own per­ s on while imprisoned, to when released, not being allowed freedoms that others enjoy such as the right to vote. “After I did my time, and when I get home and I realized like those slaves in June 19, 1865, I ain’t got nothing but the clothes on my back and a will to live, and a will to use my freedom for the greater good of all mankind,” Fox Rich said. “It shows you the power of the human spirit. That power rests and rules in ev­ery last one of us in this room. That power is at the forefront, I believe, of the basic principles of this institution [First Unit­ ed Bank] that says, ‘Spend Life Wisely.’ You don’t get but one.” Fox Rich implored others to think about racism and skin color. She mused about the in­terests of others with non-mela­nated skin to use the sun, tan­ning beds and creams. Her speech, of which she constantly had the audience repeating “freedom is a reason to be celebrated,” was real, raw, relevant and left many with very few words to say afterwards, in­ cluding First United Bank CEO Greg Massey who seemed in­ spired and shared his bank’s commitment to “get it right.” The love between FoxandRob was profoundly evident. They personified the term “ride or die.” Many in the room were moved by their presence. So, the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them. For the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth." [Genesis 6:5-13]. Then the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses’ bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs. [Revelation 14:19]. The unbelievable horror of putting off Christ! The eternal sadness of waiting one day too long is like the terror of those who missed the Ark in the days of Noah, or those who failed to escape Sodom and Gomorrah when they

Listen, the Bible warns that every human being is subject to sudden death. No one has the promise of another second, minute, day, or hour. For the Bible teaches that our days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle [Job 7:6], like flowers that quickly fade [Job 14:2], and like a mist that appears for a little time then vanishes [James 4:14]. Let today be your day of salvation! Turn now from your evil ways and deeds. For it is appointed to every man to die and then the judgment. Do not be unrepentant. Do not be stubborn. Do not be like Felix. As Paul reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. The last international trip I went on for work was to Southern Asia in January 2020. We traveled to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and India. While there, we met many of our partners who are working on a variety of issues facing their communities. We heard about the work to recover from the civil war in Sri Lanka, the work against caste-based discrimination in India, and the climate adaptation work being done in Bangladesh. We visited a coastal community in the south of Bangladesh that has established a local community learning center, which also doubles as a cyclone shelter. There, the farmers in the area learn about ways they can adapt their farming techniques to the changing climate realities. For example, they learn to use seeds that are more tolerant of salt, since they are seeing increased flooding during the rainy season that then leaves salt behind in the soil during the dry season. I could see the white salty deposits in one of the fields we visited. Another technique taught at the center is the use of old plastic bottles to create a hanging garden along a wall, which allows for more plants to be grown above the salty soil. Climate change is a huge, existential problem facing us all as humans. It can be overwhelming to know what to do, what not to do, and how to act for lasting change. It can be so overwhelming that some people don’t even start. Many of our global partners are helping their communities adapt and confront

climate change and we can act, too. During the month of August, Global Ministries is trying to make working for climate justice more accessible. We are hosting our first ever Mission Dash! Mission Dash is a virtual 5K that you can complete any time during the month of August. We encourage you to run, walk, roll, or spiritually sprint while raising money for our global partners working on climate justice projects. Part of your registration fee will go directly to global partners, and we encourage you to raise additional funds that will go 100% to global partners. In addition to the 5K, we will also have a daily action calendar of just a few things you can do at home, in your community, in our country, and around the world to support climate justice. Vice President Kamala Harris has taken the lead in addressing the maternal health crisis. In her keynote address to the NAACP convention in Atlantic City this month, Harris

reiterated that Black women are three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. “So, we have elevated, for an obvious reason, the issue of maternal health so that it will be a national priority,” the vice president declared. “We took action because it can’t just be about words, to provide resources to hire and train doulas, to advance culturally competent care and to research the contributors to maternal mortality because included in those contributors are racial bias in the healthcare delivery system; included in those contributors are the stressors that Black women face in life,” Harris demanded. Cassidy and Dr. Chavis acknowledged some recent bipartisan actions by the U.S. Congress both have supported. They noted the John Lewis National Institute on Minority Health and Disparities Research Endowment Revitalization Act is now law. The Maternal Health Quality Improvement Act also became law. That law seeks to reduce maternal mortality among Black women and other minorities. It creates racial and ethnic bias training programs for healthcare providers while studying best practices to reduce and prevent discrimination in the American healthcare system. Cassidy and Dr. Chavis said Congress must pass the Telemental Health Care Access Act, reducing barriers to telemedicine and making health care more accessible to Medicare patients. The duo noted examples of maternal challenges extend even to celebrities. COVID in California: Study Finds That Pandemic Has Lowered the Life Expectancy of Black Californians Edward Henderson | California Black Media

If you follow social media or if when you’re out in public and count the number of masks being worn, you might conclude that the COVID-19 pandemic is over. People have resumed posting pictures of their summer vacations and family gatherings. Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks shows entertained thousands of uncovered faces across the nation. But, neither the Center for Disease Control (CDC) or World Health Organization have declared the pandemic has run its course and statistics and death tolls across California tell a distressing story about the indelible mark the pandemic has left on all of us. A study by collegiate researchers, including representatives from UCLA, recently published in the Journal of the American Medical

Association (JAMA) found that during the pandemic Black Californians and other minorities experienced a disproportionate reduction in life expectancy occurred compared to White Californians. The JAMA study also found that for Californians living in the highest income census tracts versus the lowest, the gap in life expectancies increased from a difference before the pandemic of about 11.5 years to 14.67 years in 2020 and 15.51 years in 2021. Between 2019 and 2021 the research shows the life expectancy for Black Californians decreased by nearly 3.8 years from 74.8 years to 71. Latinx Californians’ life expectancy fell by nearly 5.7 years from 82.5 years to 76.8 and for Asian Californians the

decrease was 3 years, from 86.6 years to 83.5. White Californians life expectancy only decreased 1.9 years from 80.5 to 78.6 years. “This disparity, much like other racial and ethnic inequities, has roots in the social determinants of health as well as structural barriers resulting from systemic racism that have helped perpetuate disparities for generations,” researchers stated in the study. The study found that economic factors including the likelihood of Black and Latinx Californians working frontline jobs increased their exposure to the COVID-19 virus coupled with the increased need for them to attend work in person to financially survive the pandemic were possible contributors to the life expectancy decrease.

“Families of lower socioeconomic status are more vulnerable to economic instability and were less likely to access income support programs during the pandemic, raising concerns that the stresses brought on by the pandemic might have widened health gaps related to income and race and ethnicity,” the study reported. As of July 11, only 68 % of Black Californians have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and only 25 % of Black children in California. Government supported programs and additional funds allocated in budget for MediCal coverage for undocumented immigrants are a few steps that have been taken to combat some of these disparities. WHO Declares Monkeypox a Global Health Emergency... continued more easily since 2018. Around 99% of cases reported outside of Africa this year were among men and 98% among men who have sex with men, according to CNBC. However, experts have made it clear that anyone can catch monkeypox. In fact, experts believe that the virus may beginspreading to groups outside of the LGBTQ community. It is not uncommon for a virus outbreak to start in one particular group or setting before spreading more widely in the general population, Catherine Smallwood, senior emergency officer at the WHO, told CNBC’s “Street Signs Europe”, noting that health authorities could take cues from the early findings. “This really might be the canary in the mine that’s alerting to us a new disease threat that could spread to other groups,” she continued. For young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals who are more vulnerable to the virus, this could mean more severe cases. “If it does spread to other groups — particularly to people who are vulnerable to severe monkeypox disease, which we know there are certain groups that are more prone to severe illness — then we might see increased public health impact,” she shares. Can monkeypox be contained? Monkeypox can be contained, however, “It really will require a major concerted effort locally, nationally and globally,” according to UCLA epidemiologist Anne Rimoin, who has studied monkeypox for decades. U.S. officials have already expanded testing, made tens of thousands of vaccines available

and made plans to release another 1.6 million doses in the coming months, NPR reports. However, the limited supplies have not matched the demand, some health officials have reported. And despite limited testing, case numbers have grown so rapidly in recent weeks. This insinuates that a larger response may be necessary to contain the outbreak, experts say – if containment is still possible. In the meantime, the CDC recommends protecting yourself by doing the following: Avoid close contact (including sexual contact) with people who are sick or have a rash and contaminated items Do not kiss, hug, or touch. Do not share eating utensils or cups. Do not touch the bedding or clothing of a sick person. Wash your hands Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean. Avoid animals when traveling Don’t touch live or dead wild animals. Do not touch or eat products that come from wild animals. Avoid touching materials, such as bedding, that have been used by animals. If you are traveling to work with animals, wear appropriate protective equipment and take additional precautions. Seek additional information and guidance if working with animals suspected of monkeypox infection

What to expect with monkeypox If you contract monkeypox, there are a few symptoms you can expect. Symptoms in the latest

monkeypox outbreak include lesions in the throat, urethra and rectum that can be very painful. Fever, body aches or respiratory symptoms are typically associated with the disease, but those symptoms are not being experienced by all during this outbreak, the Times reports. Meanwhile, recent genetic analyses of samples from infected patients showed the monkeypox genome has collected nearly 50 genetic mutations since 2018, far more than the six or seven it would have been expected to express in that period. She said the nurse she had previously spoken with told her that the medicine was making her crazy. Had she gone along with the nurse’s assertions, Williams could have died. “Being heard and appropriately treated was the difference between life or death for me,” Williams asserted. “I know those statistics would be different if the medical establishment listened to every Black woman’s experience.” In an email to NNPA Newswire, Cassidy said, “We all do better when all Americans are well. African American mothers dying during or after childbirth at a higher rate than other groups is a tragedy. “Working with Dr. Chavis, we will find better ways to care for mothers, babies, and families,” Cassidy said.

Griner has been held in jail since being detained without an opportunity to speak to the public or for herself. Russian airport officials claim they found cannabis oil vape cartridges in Griner’s luggage February 17. Some pundits argue that Briner is a political prisoner as she was taken into custody shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Griner, who plays on Russia’s national team, has lived there part-time for seven years. If Griner knows the laws and hasn’t broken any before, then why would one of basketball’s greatest players do it now, especially in wartime? In response to a public outcry about Brittney’s case, the U.S.

State Department classified the Texas native as “wrongfully detained” by the Russian government in May.”The welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad is among the highest priorities of the U.S government,” the State Department said. Social media influencers and international media called out Russia because no one had seen or heard from Griner for weeks after her arrest. Those claims were buoyed by reports from Griner’s wife Cherelle who said it was difficult to contact the two-time Olympic Gold medalist. Cherelle also said Griner is alone and without help or assistance in the Russian jail. Innovation Law Lab Files Appeal in Louisiana v. CDC Appeal Challenges Nationwide Injunction That Forces Continuation of Title 42 State/County/ Political News New Orleans, LA –7/26/22 Innovation Law Lab, a non-profit organization that seeks to advance refugee and immigrant justice, filed its appeal brief at the Fifth Circuit in Louisiana v. CDC, a case brought in the Western District of Louisiana by Arizona, Texas, and 22 non-border states seeking to stop the Biden Administration’s termination of the Title 42 order, which has effectively shut down access to asylum at the southern border. Innovation Law Lab has a direct stake in Louisiana v. CDC: its mission-driven work of providing representation to those seeking asylum along the U.S.-Mexico border has been completely thwarted by Title 42, a so called “public health” policy that has been debunked by public health experts time and time again. The organization has argued it should be permitted to join as a party because of the direct stake it has in the outcome of this case, but the district court denied its earlier motion to intervene. Today, Innovation Law Lab is appealing the denial of that motion, and the nationwide scope of the preliminary injunction that for over two months has forced the continuation of Title 42 across the entire border despite the

Amnesty said Saudi Arabia stands among the world’s top executioners, with dozens of people executed yearly – many in public beheadings. Saudi Arabia also opposes free speech, with activists jailed simply for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association, and assembly. The country also doesn’t allow protests, and women face broad discrimination. “Women and girls remain subject to discrimination in law and practice, with laws that ensure they are subordinate citizens to men – particularly concerning family matters such as marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance,” Amnesty officials wrote.

“Women who supported a campaign against a ban on women drivers face the threat of arrest and other harassment and intimidation,” they stated. Further, torture in police custody remains common, and authorities don’t need reasons to detain individuals. Also, according to Amnesty officials, members of the Kingdom’s Shi’a minority, most of whom live in the oil-rich Eastern Province, continue to face entrenched discrimination that limits their access to government services and employment. According to the Interior Ministry, a crackdown on irregular foreign migrant workers in November 2013 led to the deportation of more than 370,000 people. Some 18,000 were still being detained as of March 2020, and thousands of people were summarily returned to Somalia, Yemen, or other states where they could face human rights abuses on return.
