New Strain of Covid Proving Fatal to Unvaccinated People Manny Otiko | California Black Media

Don’t put away that mask. While the American public might be celebrating the lifting of the tightest COVID-19 restrictions in most parts of the United States, the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. According to medical doctors, the United States is currently dealing with a new strain of the virus, the Delta variant, which is more lethal and virulent than previous strains. The Delta variant originated in India towards the end of last year and was first identified in America in March. The Los Angeles County Health Department is so worried about a new outbreak, its told residents to mask up again. “Since the Delta variant is more infectious than other variants, Public Health recommends wearing a mask around others in indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status,” said the LA County Department of Health in a tweet. Dr. Jerry Abraham, director of Kedren Vaccines at Kedren Health in Los Angeles, has already seen signs of the new strain in the Los Angeles community. He said medical professionals are already gearing up for what he called the “5th wave” of the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s already in LA,” he said. “We assume the rates will go back up.” Like other viruses, Covid-19

is constantly mutating. When the virus encounters new hosts (particularly unvaccinated bodies,) it changes and gets stronger. The best way to eliminate the disease is to vaccinate about 70 % of residents in a community (herd immunity,) so the virus doesn’t have any places to grow and survive. Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist and health economist and a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, D.C., emphasized this point during a recent Ethnic Media Services virtual briefing on the efficacy of continued mask use. “The more warm bodies the virus has, the more opportunity it will have to mutate,” said FeiglDeing, who is also the Chief Health Economist for Microclinic International, a San Franciscobased non-profit that bills itself as an organization that “revolutionize how deadly diseases are prevented and managed worldwide.” “If you let it spread, it will mutate,” he warned. Feigl-Ding added, at this stage, reaching herd immunity is not realistic, and we need to look at alternative solutions to contain the virus, such as continued mask usage, ventilation, hand washing, disinfecting surfaces and air purification devices. But over the last year, the debate about vaccinations became

political. A large number of people who supported former President Donald Trump downplayed the virus and accused Democrats of overstating the severity of the pandemic. A lot of those skeptics even refused to take the vaccines. Some say they don’t trust the science. Others do it to resist what they see as pressure coming from liberals. But health experts say, refusing to take one of the three vaccines approved to fight COVID-19 in the United States is dangerous and only allows the virus to thrive. Data is beginning to show the effects of politicizing public health. Deaths and infections are going up in red states, while the numbers have been steadily declining in blue states. “A study from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, finds that states with Republican governors have experienced the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to Medical News Today. Medical data shows that 99 % of recent Covid 19 deaths were unvaccinated people, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading virologist and director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Abraham is a big proponent of vaccination and estimates his

clinic has given about 300,000 inoculations to people in the South Los Angeles area. But he still sees worrying trends. According to Abraham, only about 40% of Black Men in the area are vaccinated. He is also troubled by the attitude he sees in a demographic he calls “the Invincibles” (young people in their late teens and early 20s who don’t think they’ll ever get sick.) Many of them, Abraham says, are reluctant to take the vaccination, even though they’re eligible. Abraham said he encountered many “Invincibles” at the recent Juneteenth celebration in Los Angeles, and many of them had a nonchalant attitude towards Covid-19. He said many young people he encouraged to get vaccinated said, “I’ll get over it.” They think if they eat right and are healthy, they’ll survive Covid, he said. But Abraham said healthy people can get sick and still need to get vaccinated. “You're never going to exercise or eat your way off a ventilator,” said Abraham. Abraham also warned the situation would worsen during the fall when it gets colder, and people spend more time inside. “It's not a matter of if,” said Abraham. He also said that pandemic diseases are becoming more common. There are several reasons why this could be occurring, such as overpopulation, children growing up in sterilized environments, poor nutrition, global warming, poor health and poor sanitation in the developing world. And we live in an increasingly globalized world, so it’s easy for a disease that originated on the other side of the world to end up in the West. “What happens in South Asia will affect us in L.A.,” said Abraham.

COVID-19 Transmission Increase Among Unvaccinated Younger People...continued new deaths reported today, three people that passed away were over the age of 80, two people who passed were between the ages of 65 and 79, one person who passed was between the ages of 50 and 64, and two people who passed were between the ages of 30 and 49. “We wish healing and peace to the families and friends mourning their loved one lost to COVID-19," said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “As cases increase, the urgency to get more people vaccinated is rising. Nearly 100% of new cases are occurring among those not fully vaccinated. All of our COVID-19 vaccines are very effective at protecting you from severe disease from COVID-19 and variants of concern like the Delta variant. We remain focused on equitably bringing vaccines and high-quality health information to all of our L.A. County communities with a particular focus on those communities that have been hard hit by the pandemic." Public Health is connecting employers and community organizations, those who want to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to staff or the community, to County mobile units and vaccination partners throughout the county to provide vaccines at convenient locations where staff and residents gather. Public Health encourages employers and event organizers to visit the Find a Vaccination Provider page to request a mobile team or other vaccination partners to provide vaccines. There are sites set up at retail stores, parks, recreation centers, and many other gathering places all over the county to make it as easy as possible for residents to get vaccinated.

County is increasing among younger unvaccinated L.A. County residents. Of the 1,094 new cases of COVID-19 reported by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) today, 83% are among people under the age of 50 years old with the highest number of new cases among residents between

the ages of 18 and 49 years old with 70% of new cases. Becau se of i ncrea sed intermingling and summer social activities and the circulation of more variants of concern like the highly transmissible Delta variant, Public Health continues to caution there is increased risk of COVID-19 infection for people who aren’t fully vaccinated. COVID-19 is getting fully vaccinated. Public Health recommends anyone not fully vaccinated to take sensible precautions – wear a mask in indoor public and social settings with people who don’t live with you, move social activities outdoors as much as possible, and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently when outside your home.

To date, Public Health identified 1,256,515 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 24,538 deaths. There are 336 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized. San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Transportation Director Marie Espinoza, who has dedicated her career to the safety of students who ride the bus to and from school, has won state recognition for her work. On Friday, July 9, the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Ad minist rators (CA LSA) honored Espinoza with the Classified Administrator of the Year Award for region six, which includes San Diego, Orange, Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.

Espinoza, who has worked for SBCUSD since 2004, has devoted herself to ensuring that the 9,000 District students who ride the bus have a safe and positive experience. Although students spent the last school year in distance learning, Espinoza adjusted to the unpredictable changes by remaining flexible and hopeful as she transitioned to serving as logistics chief for the COVID Incident Management Team. “In my environment, change is constant,” Espinoza said. “I am accustomed to embracing continued in next 2 columns

Last year, Black people accounted for 6.5% of California's population but were the targets of 30% of total hate crimes, an 87% increase from 2019. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who held a press conference to address the hate crime epidemic, promised to attack this issue head on. "We need to be more victimcentered with how we address hate crime by providing care and healing in language and with cultural competence," Bonta told Sacramento’s ABC10. "We need to strengthen our reporting and tracking system so that we can really get a handle on the full depth of the challenge.” When it comes to hate crimes, Black Americans are the most targeted racial group in the country, with Anti-Black hate crimes making up 47.1% of all racially motivated hate crimes in

2018 and 48.5% in 2019. According to the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations 2019 Hate Crime Report, 2019 also saw a 64% increase in hate crimes targeting trans people, many of which were Black or Brown, according to the Human Rights Campaign. "Yet another year with alarming levels of bias-motivated crimes underscores just how urgent it is to address this hate crimes epidemic," said Alphonso David, the Human Rights Campaign's first Black president. "This year, we saw a tragic new record of fatal violence against transgender and gender non-conforming people in this country, particularly against Black and Brown transgender women." 2020 also saw a 107% increase in anti-Asian hate crime in California as racially motivated civil unrest ravished the country.

The Arroyo Valley High School (AVHS) Army JROTC Leadership Team is 1 of only 40 such teams in the nation to win an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the prestigious 2020-2021 JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl (JLAB). JLAB is a nationally recognized competition created exclusively for JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) students. Participating cadets learn the values of citizenship and academic competition as they are tested on their knowledge of current events, leadership skills, and leadership values. The four members of the AVHS JROTC Leadership Team, Isaiah Cruz, Dayana Duran, MaKayla Keeme-Anweiler, and Francisco Mondragon-Avila, earned top scores in the first two rounds of leadership and academic competition. After beating out 1,471 other Army JROTC teams

to land in the top 40, the team will head to Washington, D.C. to compete in the championship event at the Catholic University of America, which starts Monday, July 19. The five-day event is sponsored by the U.S. Army Cadet Command and is conducted by the College Options Foundation. “I am very happy for our proud cadets and their recent success. They faced many tough challenges this past school year, and they succeeded. Department of Education Approves Borrower Defense Claims Related to Three Additional Institutions Community/ Education News The US Department of E d u c a t i o n ( D e p a r t m e n t) announced today the approval of over 1,800 borrower defense to repayment (borrower defense) claims for borrowers who attended three institutions: Westwood College, Marinello Schools of Beauty and the Court Reporting Institute. This is the first time the Department has announced approved borrower defense claims for students who attended institutions besides Corinthian Colleges, ITT Technical Institute, and American Career Institute since 2017. These borrowers will receive 100 percent loan discharges, resulting in approximately $55.6 million in relief. This brings total loan cancellation based on borrower defense by the Biden Administration to over $1.5 billion for nearly 92,000 borrowers. “Today’s announcement continues the U.S. Department of Education’s commitment to standing up for students whose colleges took advantage of them,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The Department will continue doing its part to review and approve borrower defense claims quickly and fairly so that borrowers receive the relief that they need and deserve. We also hope these approvals serve as a warning to any institution engaging in similar conduct that this type of misrepresentation is unacceptable.” Westwood College The Department is approving two types of claims related to Westwood College (Westwood).

First, the Department found that, from 2002 through its 2015 closure, all of Westwood’s campuses across the country engaged in widespread misrepresentations about the ability of students to transfer credits. Despite claims by Westwood, students were generally unable to transfer their credits to other institutions. The inability of Westwood students to transfer their credits meant that they had to—or would have to—restart their education at a different school. Second, the Department found that, from 2004 until its closure in 2015, Westwood made widespread, substantial misrepresentations to students that its criminal justice program would lead to careers as police officers in Illinois, particularly in the Chicago area. The institution told students they would be able to find employment with the Chicago Police Department and other law enforcement agencies when, in fact, these agencies would not accept Westwood credits in their hiring processes. Borrowers said that instead of obtaining employment as a police officer after graduation from Westwood, they often had to accept minimum wage jobs or jobs that required no degree at all. The result was that students were worse off after attending Westwood. The Department has approved over 1,600 claims, representing approximately $53 million in relief for former Westwood students. Westwood College was owned by Alta College, Inc. (Alta), which was located in Colorado. Major executives at Alta included cofounder Kirk Riedinger and

George Burnett. In 2002, Alta was acquired by Housatonic Partners, a private equity firm located in California and Massachusetts. Marinello Schools of Beauty The Department found that Marinello Schools of Beauty (Marinello) made widespread, substantial misrepresentations about the instruction that would be offered at its campuses across the country. These misrepresentations occurred from 2009 until the schools closed in 2016 after the Department denied Marinello’s application for continued participation in federal student aid programs. Borrowers regularly asserted that the schools failed to train them about key elements of a cosmetology program, such as how to cut hair. The Department found that Marinello left students without instructors for weeks or months at a time as part of a pattern of failing to provide the education it promised. As a result, students found it extremely difficult to pass necessary state licensing tests and receive any return on their educational investment. As of today, the Department has approved over 200 claims, representing approximately $2.2 million in relief for former Marinello students. At all times relevant to the findings, Marinello was owned by B&H Education Inc. (B&H), which was a Delaware corporation. The leaders of B&H included Rashad Elyas, Nagui Elyas, Mike Benvenuti, and Michael Flecker in 2013 when it was sued under the False Claims Act in a lawsuit continued on page 3

Fear Of Critical Race Theory Has Caused State Legislatures To Pass Anti-Truth Laws That Outlaw Teaching Racial Subjects And Even Some Ethnic Studies Courses. Eugene Stovall Oakland, California July, 2021 Idaho is the latest state government to pass anti-truth measures outlawing teaching critical race theory in schools, colleges and universities. The white backlash against critical race theory indicates the threat mere discussions about race pose to white supremacy. Just as white supremacy has passed laws to restrict immigration, suppress the vote, and curtail labor unions in order to restrictions the constitutional guarantees, civil rights and other principles of American democracy enjoyed by non-white citizens, the antidemocratic forces that control state governments all over the county are outlawing critical race theory and, in some states, such as Arizona, are banning ethnic studies, altogether. Critical race theory is simply the use of deductive and inductive reasoning to understand how racism functions in America. In outlawing critical race theory Idaho joins Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Utah, Arkansas Tennessee and Arizona. The white backlash against critical race theory and ethnic studies is so determined that, even in California, a bill passed by the California state legislature making completing an ethnic studies course a requirement for graduation from high school was vetoed by the Democratic governor. Throughout America, the truth, not only about race, but also about many other murky aspects of the American ‘deep state’ has become far too dangerous to be taught in the schools. Racism is so endemic in America that Kentucky Senator, Rand Paul, told the New York Times that America is not a democracy and American history does not support majority rule. Paul’s beliefs based on The fugitive slave law, the Chinese exclusion acts, the Indian Removal Act, the Black Codes, Executive Order 9066 and the Muslim ban, All of the anti-truth laws would pass any court challenge. Catholics occupy six of the nine Supreme Court seats, one of whom, Neil Gorsuch, was the founder and president of Georgetown’s Fascism Forever Club. The Catholic view of minorities can be judged by the current Pope’s canonization of Junipero Serra, who enslaved, tortured and murdered hundreds of thousands of Native Americans and Karol Wojtyla, aka Pope John Paul II, who developed and distributed Zyklon-B gas pellets to the Nazi death camps that exterminated millions of Jews. Catholics are taught to venerate and emulate their saints. But the Organization of American Historians says: “Critical race theory provides a lens through which we can examine and understand systemic racism and its many consequences. The history we teach must investigate the core conflict between a nation founded on radical notions of liberty, freedom and equality and a nation built on slavery, exploitation and exclusion.” The Deep State, Disinformation And Critical Race Theory “We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false...” William Casey, CIA Director to President Ronald Reagan Wi l l i a m C a s e y u s e d disinformation to protect Ronald

Reagan from the consequences of his illegalities, frauds and outright crimes. Even prior to entering the White House, Reagan committed treason by negotiating an arms for hostages deal with the Iranian government in return for Iran’s support in the 1980 presidential election. Once in office, Reagan continued breaking the law. He armed insurgents known as the contras to overthrow the Nicaraguan government, violating the Boland Amendment. Reagan smuggled cocaine into the US, selling crack cocaine in the inner cities and powder cocaine in the suburbs. Reagan’s drug operation sparked an explosion of drug use and gang violence all over the US. Once again white supremacy used their control of the law, in this case forfeiture laws, to appropriate billions in drug profits while incarcerating millions of black people. At the same time, Casey’s program of disinformation was so effective that Reagan lied to Congress with a wink and a nod. And even as the FBI, DEA and Congress ignored Reagan’s crimes, the media and academia praised him as one of America’ greatest presidents. Throughout history, disinformation has hidden many of the deep state’s murky activities. The 1921 Tulsa race riot that burned and bombed the black community of Greenwood from existence covered up Warren Harding’s illegal transfer of the Navy’s oil reserves in Elk Hills and Teapot Dome to a cabal of oil companies led by Standard Oil, Sinclair Oil [now Mobile Oil]

Historical myth teaches that the explosion of white racism after the Civil War was t an unintended consequence of reconstruction. However, reconstruction was intended to allow the same unreconstructed racists who fomented the civil war to lead the traitorous Southern states back into the federal government. Black codes, Jim Crow laws and the Supreme Court doctrine of ‘separate and equal’ were as much the objectives of reconstruction as was the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the installation of Andrew Johnson into the White House. In January, 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman signed Field Order 15, giving 400,000 acres of confiscated Confederate land to freed slaves. Sherman ordered Brigadier General Rufus Saxton to divide up the land and distribute up to 40 acres to individual Negro families. Yet Lincoln countermanded Field Order 15 and returned the land to the slave owners who were still in open rebellion against the United States government. Lincoln even drafted a reparations order to compensate slave owners for their loss due to the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1864, Abraham Lincoln ran for re-election on the pro-slavery National Union Party ticket, choosing Andrew Johnson, the pro-slavery Tennessee Democratic senator as his vice-presidential running mate. Lincoln not only signed his own death warrant, but he also turned the country over to those responsible for the deaths of 620,00 white men. Rush (D-IL-01), Barbara Lee (DCA-13) and Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) hosted a virtual forum focused on the activities of COINTELPRO. Several African Americans with direct knowledge of COINTELPRO programs testified, including 1960s activists Akua Njeri, Bobby Seale and Ericka Huggins, testified. Fred Hampton Jr also testified. COINTELPRO is the moniker used to describe a series of covert projects the FBI coordinated between 1956-1971. They were aimed at surveilling, infiltrating and disrupting several domestic political movements and individuals that the agency deemed subversive or critical of the United States. Targeted groups and individuals included the Communist Party USA, the Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam, anti-Vietnam war organizers, feminist organizations and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 2021 Oscar-nominated film “Judas and the Black Messiah” depicted the strategy COINTELPRO used to infiltrate the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, which led to the assassination of Black Panther Party leader the late Fred Hampton Sr. The lawmakers hosting the virtual forum condemned the COINTELPRO programs and J. Edgar Hoover’s leadership over the operation and, more broadly, the FBI. Hoover was the first and founding director of the FBI and he ran the agency from 1935 until his death in 1972. Hoover was also the head of the Bureau of Investigation, a government agency founded in 1924 and the forerunner to the FBI. They are also calling for the uncovering of the still-classified history of COINTELPRO.

Rush, the co-founder of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, introduced his COINTELPRO Full Disclosure Act on May 4, which would require federal government agencies to publicly release all counterintelligence files related to COINTELPRO, and remove J. Edgar Hoover’s name from the FBI building in Washington, D.C. Representatives Cohen, Rush and Lee are also co-sponsoring a separate bill aimed at removing Hoover’s name from the FBI headquarters. “I know the damages of J. Edgar Hoover’s COINTELPRO firsthand. I was put in the middle of their aggressive surveillance and counterintelligence activities after becoming involved with the Black Panther Party as a community worker,” said Lee. “As a community worker, I used my organizational and fundraising skills to help implement the Ten Point Program, which made programs like Free Breakfast for Children possible and paved the way for our own government’s free breakfast plan for low-income children.” Calling the FBI’s activities and methods under Hoover “gover n mentsponsored harassment,” Cohen said “COINTELPRO was not just violent and illegal. Department of Education Approves Borrower Defense Claims Related to Three Additional Institutions...continued from page 2 that resulted in an $8.6 million settlement in 2016. Court Reporting Institute The Department found that from 1998 through its 2006 closure, the Court Reporting Institute (CRI) made widespread, substantial misrepresentations about the time it would take to complete its court reporting program. The majority of CRI students were never able to complete the court reporting program and, therefore, could not become court reporters. In fact, data reviewed by the Department showed that just two to six percent of students graduated and those who did finish the program took much longer to do so than the institution claimed. These findings cover each of the institution’s locations, which were in Washington, California, and Idaho. As of today, the Department has approved 18 claims, representing approximately $340,000 in relief for former CRI students. During the findings period and at the time of its closure, CRI was owned by Alen Janisch. The f indings regarding Westwood and CRI were made possible by evidence provided by law enforcement partners at the offices of the Washington, Colorado, and Illinois attorneys general. The Department will continue working with these law enforcement partners and others to

identify institutional misconduct that harms federal student loan borrowers. Today’s action continues efforts by the Biden Administration to ensure borrower defense and other targeted loan cancellation, forgiveness, and discharge programs deliver relief to students and borrowers. In March, the agency announced that it would grant $1 billion in relief to 72,000 borrowers with approved borrower defense claims related to Corinthian Colleges and ITT Technical Institute (ITT). Subsequently, the Department announced an additional $500 million in relief for 18,000 borrowers with approved borrower defense claims related to ITT. The Department also suspended requests for earnings documentation from borrowers who had received a total and permanent disability discharge; this action reinstated discharges for 41,000 borrowers and will help protect another 190,000 borrowers from the risk of losing their discharges for this reason. The Department is considering a future rulemaking on borrower defense and held public hearings to receive stakeholder feedback in late June. On July 2, Rep. Jaime Raskin (D-MD), chairman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, penned a letter to the United States Anti-Doping Agency regarding Sha’Carri Richardson and the agency’s decision to suspend her from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “This punishment, which is not supported by any scientific evidence, may prevent Ms. Richardson from competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics just after she inspired the country with her performance in the Olympic Trials last month,” Raskin says in the letter. “We urge you to reconsider the policies that led to this and other suspensions for recreational marijuana use, and to reconsider Ms. Richardson’s suspension. Please strike a blow for civil liberties and civil rights by reversing this course you are on.” In a press release on Friday, July 2, USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart reiterated that “the rules are clear.” “The rules are clear, but this is heartbreaking on many levels;

Sexual Abuse and the Church Elizabeth Dilley It is denominational meeting season, when various Christian denominations gather to worship, take up the business of being the church, and discern how they are called to live and work. Our own United Church of Christ General Synod takes place this week (July 11-18, 2021). Recently, some of our siblings in Christ in the Southern Baptist Convention responded to concerns about systemic failures to address sexual abuse in their midst. Often, such abuse was perpetrated or enabled by clergy, or ministers participated in protecting lay abusers from accountability. At times, the business of the SBC was disrupted by the urgent claims of survivors of sexual assault seeking to be heard. While they ultimately voted to investigate concerns that past allegations were mishandled, there is not yet a clear indication of how future allegations will be handled or of how to navigate denominational accountability within a context of congregational polity (where local churches make their own decisions about hiring pastors and staff). On the other end of the polity spectrum, the Roman Catholic Church, which has strong hierarchical processes as a denomination, has been forced to confront its systemic practices of ignoring abuse claims or moving abusive clergy to new parishes. I know it is possible for wider expressions of the Church to hold abusers accountable, because the United Church of Christ has a robust process for processing claims of clergy sexual abuse (or other misconduct). This process is known as a “fitness review,” and it is handled by an Association

or Conference Committee on Ministry where a minister holds their standing. Members of the Ministerial Excellence, Support and Authorization (MESA) ministry team train and resource these committees so that their practices align with the UCC’s Manual on Ministry. There is not a statute of limitations on when concerns may be brought, so long as the minister is alive and still has standing in the UCC. Outcomes from a fitness review range from “affirmation of standing” through “termination of standing,” with multiple outcomes that offer a program of growth for ministers (when appropriate). And while the UCC does not yet have consistent practices for church discipline of lay persons accused of sexual misconduct, the UCC National Setting is committed to assisting congregations in minimizing abuse. The denomination’s abuse prevention resources can be found here, and the Insurance Board’s SafeConductTM Workbench and congregational resources for behavioral covenants provide additional support. Nearly every Conference holds an expectation that clergy and others who work with youth and children are mandated reporters when suspicions or allegations of abuse arise. Further, the United Church of Christ has several resources for churches who wish to commit themselves to a journey of healing after sexual abuse, no matter where or when such abuse occurred, such as Break the Silence Sunday. hold abusers accountable and remove them from ministry if necessary, and cultivated ways in which we can process painful experiences liturgically. Lou Yeboah Thinking that you have all the time in the world to get it together. Well, I got news for you…. you don’t! The end is near and it’s a lot closer than you might think. Just because years have passed since Jesus’ prophecy, do not allow that to lull you into a false sense of complacency. Jesus told us that although his coming would be like a thief in the night [Matthew 24:43] there are several signs to look for. And I tell you, these signs are being fulfilled right before our eyes. “Nation against nation, kingdom against kingdom, famines and earthquakes in various places.” [Matthew 24:7-8]. Listen, Paul declared many years ago, "Time is running out.” [2 Timothy 3:1-5]. What part of that do you not understand? The signs of the end are prevalent. I want you to know that God warned the Israelites for hundreds of years about the coming judgment on them as a nation, but He allowed them ample time to repent and change their ways. Ultimately, judgment came at the hands of foreign nations. So, when God is warning judgment not just on a nation but on an entire planet and species, it makes sense that God would allow mankind ample time to repent and change our ways, even if that is thousands of years. And just because God has delayed this long, don’t you dare delude yourself into thinking the end of the world is far off in the distant future, because it’s not. Although we cannot set dates, from all the signs, we can know that the second coming is 'at the door'. Yes, there are still some things yet to happen that end time prophecy reveals, like the mark of the beast being enforced. Once the mark of the beast is enforced, you will know that we are in the VERY LAST DAYS, right at the end of the world. Seek the truth of God's Word in the Bible and start living for Christ; because, if you find yourself under God’s wrath because you haven’t asked for forgiveness of your sins and accepted Jesus as your Savior, you will stay behind and experience a wrath unlike anything you can even imagine. This will happen during what the Bible calls “The Tribulation” — seven years when the wrath of man, the wrath of Satan, and the wrath of God will be let loose upon this earth. For seven terrible and terrifying years the Earth will be devastated, and billions

of people will be annihilated before Jesus’ Second Coming. Don’t you wait until it’s too late! The Bible says in [John 3:36], “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” Listen, God does not wish that any should perish, but that all should be brought to repentance.” [2 Peter 3:9]. Decide -- Where do you stand? Are you under God’s wrath because you haven’t accepted His free gift of salvation, or are you under God’s grace because you have? Will you be one of those raptured before God’s wrath, or will you suffer in it? You have a decision to make. If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Savior, then heed [Mark 1:25] because, “The time has come…the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” Believe in Jesus, God’s Son, and have everlasting life. “Be not ignorant of this one thing, that ONE DAY is with the Lord as a THOUSAND YEARS, and a THOUSAND YEARS as ONE DAY … the ‘day of the Lord’ will come as a thief in the night … the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” [2 Peter 3:4-10]. “Therefore, keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back — whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!'” [Mark 13:35-37]. I ask you, are you ready for Christ return? Because one of the most distinguishing end time revelations that has been revealed to us through the Book of Revelation is that many different events will be occurring over a relatively short period of time. A series of disastrous events occurring with major impact on the world stage. And just in case you didn’t know… five of the seven trumpets have already sounded. This is one of the biggest signs that the end time is upon us, especially with the Sixth Trumpet War [Revelation 9:13-21] that will take place in the Middle East where there is currently so much turmoil. And if that doesn’t alert you to the fact that the end is near, Revelation explains that things will quickly get worse. The Antichrist will take his place as the leader of the world, ushering in the Great Tribulation [Revelation 12:12] and many of the disasters referenced by the Seven Seals. I encourage you to be always on the watch and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen… [ Luke 21:36]. Repent for the Kingdom of God is at Hand!

Her upcoming Broken Crayons Still Color, a Healthy Heritage project, is reaching out to Black women with an eight-week mental health series that she hopes will shed light on the different facets of mental illness. Coming out of COVID, Clark said that everyone has a story. For the rest of the year, the focus is on healing. “Ever ybody is feeling something,” she said. “We’re all feeling some kind of way.

Overall, that’s the biggest thing for me, especially because they are targeting African American women specifically,” she said. The goal of the Broken Crayons program is to service 25 women within their 8-week program to share and learn, and receive personalized attention. The women will have access to mental health professionals and counselors.

“So many people’s lives have shifted and changed,” she said.“I’m sure there’s a lot of people that can really benefit from the resources, and what this organization is putting together with mental health.” In California, cities and counties are now in the process of deciding how to spend $27 billion in the recent American Rescue Plan (ARP) Funding. Researchers are also looking into the impact of COVID-19 on mental health in the study, “Coronavirus Trauma and African Americans’ Mental Health: Seizing Opportunities for Transformational Change.” It highlights how Blacks were hindered during the pandemic from getting the services they needed. They also experienced higher anxiety levels and depression because of the higher impact of death and were 4.6 times more likely to be hospitalized than whites. “Financial suppor t for existing and new mental health programming will grow as states receive increased mental health block grant awards under The American Rescue Plan Act for an enhanced COVID response. Sacramento – State Treasurer Fiona Ma announced the July 8th sale of $1.888 billion of systemwide revenue bonds for the Trustees of the California State University (CSU) to provide funding for various capital improvements and refund previously issued debt. The bond sale consisted of three series: $124.2 million Series 2021A taxexempt bonds, $1.664 billion Series 2021B taxable bonds, and a remarketing of $100 million Series 2016B-2 tax-exempt bonds. Proceeds of the 2021 bonds will provide funding for the acquisition, constr uction, renovation and improvement of various projects of the CSU and the refunding of previously issued bonds. The refunding bonds are expected to save $114.0 million in debt service costs over the next 23 years, or $102.6 million on a present value basis. Easy care raspberries are high in fiber and Vitamin C, making them a healthy snack as well as delicious in jams, jellies, and desserts. Enjoy the best flavor and reduce pest problems with proper harvesting and summer care. Pick raspberries when the fruit is firm but soft, deeply colored, and easily slides off the hard core. Check your raspberry patch and harvest every few days to avoid overripe fruit that attracts picnic beetles and other pests. Consider wearing long pants and a long sleeve shirt for protection against the thorns and mosquitoes. Place berries in shallow containers when harvesting and storing to avoid crushing the delicate fruit. Chill any uneaten berries within two hours of harvesting to preserve the freshness and flavor. Wait to wash berries until right before use to further lengthen their storage life. Once the summer harvest is complete, it is time to do a bit of pruning. Remove the canes that bore the summer fruit back to ground level. These canes will not form fruit in future years. Removing them now gives new canes room to grow and reduces the risk of disease. This is also a good time to check all canes for signs of disease problems. Look for sunken and discolored areas, cankers, and spotted, yellow or brown leaves. These symptoms along with dry crumbly fruit are clues disease, like anthracnose and spur blight have moved into your raspberry patch. Remove and destroy diseased canes to ground level as soon as they are found. This is often enough to manage these diseases. Summer is also a good time to thin the remaining canes on summer bearing raspberries.

Remove weak or damaged canes, leaving three or four of the sturdiest per foot of row or six or eight stems per hill when growing in the hill system. Wait until next spring to reduce the height of the remaining canes. At that time, you can determine winter dieback and damage and prune accordingly. Fall bearing raspberries are handled a bit differently. Prune them like the summer bearing raspberries to harvest two crops in one season. Often called everbearing, these produce a summer crop on second year canes and fall crop on first year canes. Make pruning easier and benefit from an earlier, larger fall harvest by managing fall bearing raspberries with one pruning. Cut or mow all the canes to ground level once the plants are dormant and before growth begins in spring. This pruning technique eliminates the summer crop but is much easier, less time consuming, and eliminates any animal and winter damage in just one cut. Consider planting a summer and a fall bearing raspberry patch to maximize the harvest. You’ll enjoy summer raspberries from one planting plus a larger, earlier harvest from your fall bearing raspberries when pruning all the canes to ground level each year. Grab your favorite berry harvest basket, dress appropriately and head to your raspberry patch. With every bite of freshfrom-the-garden raspberry or homemade raspberry treat you will be glad you took the time to plant, tend and harvest your own. She cited the FBI’s “Black identity extremism” report, which was written by the FBI’s Domestic Terrorism Analysis Unit in 2017, and claimed that “perceptions of police brutality against African Americans” had spurred“ an increase in premeditated, retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement.” Lee criticized the idea of a “Black identity extremist,” saying that such a thing “did not exist.” “This was another way for the FBI to surveil the Black community. So, we must be vigilant now, this briefing is so important, because we all have to understand what a COINTELPRO 2 looks like now,” Lee said.

White Police Chief Resigns After ‘KKK’ Note Placed in Black Officer’s Jacket By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent NNPA NEWSWIRE — Sheffield Lake Police Chief Anthony Campo reportedly decided to retire after more than 30 years on the police force in the Ohio town of just over 9,000 people and just over 21 miles from Cleveland. “We had a very emotional sit down because it took us 10 minutes to talk to each other because we were both crying,” Mayor Dennis Bring told a local television news crew.

The video, which has been replayed over various news and social media outlets, shows Campo tampering with a raincoat on a desk that appears to be that of a Black officer. White House Memorandum In June, President Biden unveiled a comprehensive strategy to combat gun violence. This strategy implements preventative measures that are proven to reduce violent crime and attacks the root causes – including by investing in effective community policing and addressing the flow of firearms used to commit crimes. Combined, the Administration’s comprehensive strategy will: Stem the flow of firearms used to commit violence, including by holding rogue firearms dealers accountable for violating federal laws Support local law enforcement with federal tools and resources to help address summer violent crime Invest in evidence-based community violence interventions Expand summer programming, employment opportunities, and other services and supports for teenagers and young adults Help formerly incarcerated i nd iv idu als successf u lly reenter their communities The core of the President’s plan is a partnership with cities and states, equipping local leaders with historic levels of federal funding and a range of tools to address the multifaceted challenge of gun violence. In particular, the strategy uses the American Rescue Plan’s $350 billion in financial support and clear guidance to provide state, local, territorial, and tribal governments the money they need to put more police officers on the beat – including hiring above prepandemic levels in communities experiencing an increase in gun violence associated with the pandemic – as well as the other resources, training, and accountability they need to engage in effective community policing. “Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda” Will Turn Racism Upside Down By Marcela Howell

Wade – the 1973 decision that legalized abortion – there is a lot of attention being paid to abortion rights but not enough emphasis on the full range of reproductive health and rights issues. Every pregnant Black person faces systemic racism that makes us “three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women.” When our children are born, we face the everyday reality of battling racism and the toll it takes on Black lives. This past year, the deadly impact of racial discrimination couldn’t have been more evident as the pandemic devastated our communities, with Black and Latinx people accounting for nearly 43 percent of COVID-19 deaths. As if that’s not bad enough, Black and Latinx women have paid the economic price for the pandemic, bearing the brunt of the “shecession.” That’s why more than 30 Black

women’s organizations and Reproductive Justice activists created the “Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda” — innovative, proactive solutions to address the disparities and discrimination faced by Black women, femmes, girls and gender-expansive individuals. The “Black Reproductive Policy Agenda” is a comprehensive policy approach to the systemic racism that threatens our lives. Now, a lot of people hear “Reproductive Justice” and think birth control and abortion. But nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Reproductive Justice (RJ) is a collective framework grounded in human rights, social justice and Black Feminist theory that centers the intersectional impact of race, class and gender in one’s ability to live free from oppression — so we can create and nurture the family of our own choosing and achieve optimum mental, physical, community and economic health. Reproductive Justice was

birthed by 12 Black women in 1994, as the U.S. contemplated universal health care without acknowledging or rectifying the health care system in place, which was — and continues to be — riddled with deadly racism. Since then, RJ has grown into a full-fledged movement that fights not only for the right to health care — including full access to birth control and abortion — but also equity in housing, education and employment. RJ doesn’t leave anything — or anyone — behind. It is the comprehensive movement we need to disrupt and dismantle the deeply ingrained, systemic racism that plagues this country. Black women, femmes, girls and gender-expansive individuals have been marginalized for far too long. We have been fighting for our survival while others stood by and watched — or worse, while they actively participated in our oppression for their own gain. No more! We are tired of seeing our children, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and loved ones senselessly killed by the very people who are sworn to protect us. We are fed up with not being safe in our homes, neighborhoods and churches. We demand more than one moment of reckoning. The Black RJ movement has a policy agenda that will hold law enforcement, politicians, corporations, voters and all people living in the U.S. to account. It is an expertly informed compendium

of 25 issue areas, each with effective policy recommendations. We believe that the Agenda addresses the social, economic, political and health needs of Black women, femmes, girls and genderexpansive people — so we can live our lives fully and decide for ourselves if, when and how to have and raise our families. We hope that Congress will embrace the Black RJ Policy Agenda and work with us to pass it so that Black women, femmes, girls, and gender-expansive people can live in full autonomy, with equality and justice for all. But we know that will only happen if every Black and Brown person demands it. For white people — especially white feminists — who want to be good allies, this is their chance; they too should make implementing the Black RJ Policy Agenda a priority. The Black RJ movement has a plan to dismantle white supremacy. I challenge and encourage you to join us in demanding that elected officials and policymakers embrace and implement the Black RJ Policy Agenda now. White House Releases Gun Reduction Strategy...continued from page 7 Watertown, NY, will use some of its Rescue Plan funds “to reinstate four police officers and two other city staff positions.” Kansas City, MO, seeks to “restore police departments to pre-pandemic levels” Syracuse, NY, will invest in an “enhancement of the police department’s ShotSpotter system, which helps locate gunfire; a collaboration with mental health providers to assist with mental health-related police calls; [and] increased police transparency.” Monday, the President will continue his ongoing conversations with local leaders about gun violence reduction. Cities represented in the meeting are using American Rescue Plan funds to improve public safety and expand community services – including by investing in community policing and bolstering law enforcement, supporting effective community violence intervention programs, and expanding programming to increase economic opportunity and steer atrisk individuals away from crime. The historic funding from the American Rescue Plan is also being supplemented by additional federal efforts to support communities and crack down on gun crime. As part of that, the Department of Justice has announced the launch of gun trafficking strike forces in five areas nationwide – including New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C.,

Los Angeles, and the Bay Area. Those multi-jurisdictional efforts will address the problem of guns being obtained in places with weaker gun laws and then used to commit horrific crimes across state lines. And they will augment existing efforts by the Department of Justice announced in May to target federal law enforcement efforts nationwide to address violent crime. In addition, the President has requested additional support to better strengthen both federal and local law enforcement efforts. In his proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2022, the President asked for $300 million more for the COPS program to boost federal assistance for community policing, and he called for over $750 million more for federal law enforcement agencies. The President also has already taken steps to strengthen regulations to keep guns out of the wrong hands – including by cracking down on ghost guns, homemade firearms that often cannot be traced by law enforcement due to the lack of a serial number and that are increasingly being used in crimes. He also continues to push Congress to take long-overdue action to prevent guns from being used in crimes, including strengthening background checks, renewing the ban on assault weapons and highcapacity magazines, and ending immunity for gun manufacturers.
