Who is Quawan “Bobby” Charles, and why are some comparing his death to Emmett Till? The 15-year-old’s death has sparked demonstrations in rural Iberia Parish, Louisiana, a densely populated county where African Americans comprise about 31 percent of its residents. According to multiple reports and photos circulating the internet, Quawan’s battered body was found by authorities sometime during or after Halloween night. Police have not confirmed where and exactly when they found Quawan’s body, but family members have claimed it was discovered in a sugar cane field not far from his home. A photo shows the teen’s face badly discolored and swollen, with parts of his jaw exposed and skin missing. There are bruises on his forehead. “Many say Charles’ body resembles 14-year-old Emmett Till who was lynched in Mississippi

in 1955 after being accused of offending a white woman in her family’s grocery store,” reported the news website, The NC Beat, which published a side-by-side photo comparison of Quawan Charles and Emmett Till. Law enforcement officials in Louisiana have not confirmed the authenticity of Quawan’s photo. Investigators have noted that they’re still processing evidence, interviewing various individuals, and are awaiting autopsy results. “The disrespect [from law enforcement] and lack of transparency are unacceptable,” ACLU of Louisiana executive di rector Alanah Odoms Hebert wrote in a statement. “We joi n t he fa m ily in demanding a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bobby’s death,” Hebert continued. “This family is grieving and deserves answers – not disrespect and stonewalling.”

Demonstrators have reportedly questioned the possibility that the case involves foul play. Many gathered along with Quawan’s family on Wednesday, Nov. 11, outside of the Iberia Parish Courthouse to demand more information be released. “We are here to demand justice for a family of people who gruesomely lost their loved one, a 15-year-old child who was found in a way that just breaks my heart,” demonstrator Jamal Taylor told Louisiana’s WAFB-TV. “Members of law enforcement have done what they do well, which is deny and hide behind a pending investigation. This family deserves answers,” Taylor remarked. Ron Haley, the attorney representing Quawan’s family, also chided authorities for their lack of transparency. “There are certain circumstances where I absolutely understand – and I think anybody would – why things aren’t made [available] to

the public,” Haley told WAFB. “But let’s talk specifically about Bobby Charles. His family should know…His mother and father should be made aware of every step of this investigation.” Racial tensions have routinely boiled over in Iberia Parish, where lynching of Black people became a regular occurrence following Reconstr uction. A blistering 2018 article published in The Acadiana Advocate reported that the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office had employed a violent gang with racist tendencies and batons. According to the report, deputies in the Sher iff Department’s elite narcotics squad routinely beat suspects, and sometimes just random African Americans they confronted. “Some of the same deputies fabricated repor ts, made bogus arrests and lied under oath to cover their tracks,” the continued on page 2

News that Pf izer and BioNTech’s announcement that their coronavirus vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 among those without previous infection arrives as the United States continues to realize recordbreaking new cases. For the f irst time on Thursday, November 12, the country surpassed 150,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day. The total number of cases soared past 10.5 million, according to Johns Hopkins University. Both California and Texas have recorded more than 1 million total cases, while states like Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey have seen significant rises in COVID infections. The most recent available statistics show that the District of Columbia has more than 18,500 total positive cases and 657 deaths. Washington, DC health officials have administered nearly 572,000 COVID tests to roughly 272,000 residents. More than 242,000 people have died in the United States since the declaration of the outbreak of the pandemic in March. Health officials have expressed that the new vaccine offers real hope for the future. “It is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19,” Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO, offered in a news release. “We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most, with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity, and economies struggling to reopen,” Dr. Bourla remarked. He continued: “We are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis. We look forward to sharing additional

efficacy and safety data generated from thousands of participants in the coming weeks.” Pfizer has maintained a strategic partnership with the National Newspaper Publishers Association, offering insight on various rare diseases like sickle cell that disproportionately affect the African American community. Dr. Kevin Williams, the Chief Medical Officer for Pfizer’s Rare Disease unit, periodically writes a column in the Black Press to help keep the African American community informed. According to information posted on the CDC’s website, clinical development is a threephase process. During Phase I, small groups of people receive the trial vaccine. In Phase II, the clinical study is expanded, and vaccine is given to people who have characteristics (such as age and physical health) similar to those for whom the new vaccine is intended. In Phase III, the vaccine is given to thousands of people and tested for efficacy and safety. Many vaccines undergo Phase IV formal, ongoing studies after the vaccine is approved and licensed. Pfizer’s vaccine is the first in the United States to generate latestage data. An analysis of individuals that received two injections of the vaccine, spaced three weeks apart, revealed more than 90 percent fewer cases of symptomatic COVID-19 when compared to those who received the placebo. The results are significant because health and science experts have stated that they expected a vaccine to yield an effective rate of no more than 70 percent. In spite of this good news, many in the African American community continue to take a wait-and-see approach. “Somehow, scientific, education and community leaders must reassure a skeptical community of color that the vaccine will help and protect them,” said Gina Harper. continued on page 4

Could America Learn a Covid-19 Lesson from Rwanda? By Rev. Dr. Jonathan Weaver

A month ago I shared with a member of Greater Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, the church I’m privileged to pastor, that I would be leaving soon for a twoweek visit to Rwanda, to visit friends and pastoral colleagues. To me it should have elicited no surprise as she knew that I had led groups to Rwanda since 2012, a country described as “The Land of a Thousand Hills,” owing to its incredible natural beauty. However, what I received was a rather horrified look and a quick, “I will be praying for you!” Her subsequent comments noted the ongoing corona virus pandemic and her assumption that I was placing myself at great risk. It was bad enough, she felt, that I would be on two flights to get there, totaling 16 hours in the sky, with a four hour layover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after leaving The United States. But she assumed that Rwanda would be a place where the pandemic was running rampant and therefore was placing myself at considerable danger. After sharing with her news reports which detailed Rwanda’s commitment to combatting the virus, her anxiousness dissipated but she

ended our conversation by saying, “Well, I’m still praying for you.” I left two days after my encounter with the member, confident that all would be well. My assurance was not unfounded over the course of my trip. Rwanda, through its leadership and the many people I met, displayed a resilience and determination to protect its population from this dreaded virus, and consequently obliterated the disparaging term used by some elected officials to describe African nations. My experience was not unusual. The requirements for my entry into Rwanda are required for everyone arriving into the country since the international airport in Kigali, the capital city, re-opened at the beginning of August. Ethiopian Airlines, my airlines of choice when travelling to Africa, currently requires that all passengers must have a recent negative SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR test result in order to board their flights from The United States. Upon exiting my flight in Rwanda, on the tarmac, before even entering the terminal building, Rwanda government officials met all passengers to determine whether we had the required certification. Once we entered

the building, we were greeted by Ministry of Health officials who administered a temperature check. Af ter passing th rough Passport Control, I proceeded to the baggage claim area when I heard “someone” state in a clear voice, “Welcome to Kigali International Airport. While in Rwanda, please remember to wash your hands frequently, engage in social distancing, and wear a mask.” That “someone” turned out to be a robot, who repeated that friendly, yet firm message several times before I exited the baggage claim area. From there I proceeded to a government-approved hotel where I would spend the night. Upon my arrival at the hotel but before I checked in, I was required to take another COVID-19-related test. I was then quarantined in my hotel room until the next morning, when upon receiving my negative test result, I was then free to move throughout the country. During my 14-day visit, travelling to three major cities and parts of the rural countryside, everyone wore masks, from the youngest children to elderly people, with virtually no exception. Temperature checks were performed at restaurants, office buildings

and stores. Social distancing was enforced at churches. It became abundantly clear that Rwanda took very seriously its mission to protect its citizens from this dreaded virus. The result; as of October 28, in a country of just over twelve million people, they have experienced only 35 deaths from the corona virus! The country implemented the key preventive measures almost immediately after the first case was reported on March 13. No hesitancy or uncertainty on the part of the national government and no squabbling among the people as far as I could tell based upon my conversations with many people. Despite the inconvenience imposed upon the populace, and yes, the economic challenges they faced, the many people I spoke to were gratified with the measures implemented since it spared the nation from countless more cases and deaths from COVID-19. Yet here is the contradiction: after a very satisfying, safe visit to one of Africa’s jewels of a nation, upon my return to The United States at Dulles International Airport, no government official asked me any COVID-19-related questions! No one inquired as to whether I had been sick while out of the country. There were no temperature checks administered. No official asked for a recent COVID-19 test result. In fact, I was subjected to the same procedures that occurred in January after my last visit to Rwanda. So many safeguards were implemented by Rwanda to protect its citizens from the potential threat of travelers entering its territory. Was my experience upon my return to America another indication of the cavalier approach and reaction to the pandemic still raging in The United States? Perhaps we could benefit from securing advice from an African nation that has achieved remarkable success in fighting this pandemic.

Ackal allegedly dismissed the matter as “just another case of n*****-knocking,” a comment deputies said made the rounds of the narcotics squad and set a freeswinging tone for years of abuse. Nearly a dozen Iberia Parish deputies would eventually confess to civil rights violations, and several agreed to testify against their boss over the biggest policing

scandal in Louisiana in a decade. But then Ackal beat the rap in 2016 and came back to town. Quawan’s family has started a GoFundMe to help pay for an independent autopsy. The site also contains a graphic photo of the teen’s body. So far, the effort has raised more than $65,000 against its original $15,000 goal. “According to Eugene Weatherspoon Collins of the Baton Rouge NAACP, Quawan Charles was lynched just like Emmett Till,’” Baton Rouge activist Gary Chambers wrote this week on Facebook. “There is no other way to put it.”

The school to prison pipeline starts as early as preschool for our youngest Black learners. According to the U.S. Department of Education (20162017), Black children face issues with preschool access and exclusion, and are prone

to receive harsher discipline than non-Black students who display the same behavior. Statistics show that Black children are 15% of the K-12th grade student population; however, they are 36% of students suspended at least once.

Too many Black early learners are bounced around between multiple preschools or childcare programs like urban nomads. During the height of the George Floyd protests, a group of African American men with professional experience in education, policy,

research and social work formed Black Men for Educational Equity (BMEE) to address implicit bias in early education. Over the last five months, BMEE examined the disparities and inequalities that exist in the system for young Black children and have created a plan of action for addressing these systemic issues. To combat this problem, BMEE is calling on the California Legislature to ensure that Black preschoolers are not excluded from important educational components and success through implicit bias and structural racism. Having access to quality preschool, fair treatment in the classroom, and equal opportunity for success are all crucial components in helping our Black preschool students succeed now, and for generations to come. Too often, the three "B's" predict a preschooler's risk of expulsion: "big, Black and boy." Black children are expelled at twice the rate of white children, particularly if they are bigger or taller than their peers. Research reveals this is less about the physical characteristics of the child and more about what is going on in the teacher's mind, than what the child is doing. Although there

is great need in California for preschool and childcare services, preschool is not compulsory.  Preschools in California currently can exclude students prior to even attempting to teach them based on subjective behav ioral expect at ions. These unfounded behavioral expectations are often fraught with implicit bias and hidden from research as providers are not required to track or report reasons for exclusion, expulsion, or suspension. It is tantamount to expulsion without any process or notice of rights, and contrary to long term public policy.  Young Black children, particularly Black boys, are too often victims of an education system that fails them and stifles their potential to succeed. When Black children are held to different standards for learning and behavior and even worse, higher standards are seen for them in preschool, it furthers the systematic racial divide. "It is important early education staff shift from destructive approaches to discipline and towards research-informed best practices," commented Dr. Judy D. White, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. "The

Kevin Lincoln (left) Mayor Michael Tubbs (right) In 2012, Stockton, California, elected 22-year-old Michael Tubbs to his hometown’s city council. From that celebrated victory to his 2017 rise to mayor of the Central Valley city, media pundits and Democratic Party insiders have hailed Tubbs, calling him one of the Democratic Party’s rising stars. Tubbs’s future as a force in the Democratic party still remains almost certain, but on Nov. 3, the 30-year-old Stanford grad suffered an unexpected blow. As of Friday, Nov. 13, Tubbs was trailing Republican challenger Kevin Lincoln in his reelection bid. Lincoln, who has never held political office, was leading Tubbs by almost 4,000 votes. Lincoln currently has 43,751 votes (55.05%) to Tubbs’s 35,724 votes (44.95%), with more ballots to be counted. With this loss, Tubbs, the 79th mayor of the seat of San Joaquin County, joins a club of one-term Stockton mayors who couldn’t pull off a run for a second term. Edward Chavez (2005 - 2008), Ann Johnston (2009 - 2012), and Anthony Silva (2013 - 2016) were all one-term mayors of the San Joaquin River port city. “Over the last four years we have built a solid foundation towards a better future,” Tubbs said in a

written statement. “It is my hope to continue this work as (Stockton’s) mayor. However, before anyone can declare a victory, each and every vote must be counted.” When he was elected in 2016, Tubbs, then 26, became the youngest mayor in Stockton’s history and the first Black person to claim the seat. Tubbs’s opponent is also Black. Lincoln’s grandfather, an immigrant from Mexico who came to California and settled in South Stockton, raised his family there and became a United States citizen. Lincoln, who was born in Stockton, grew up in a U.S. Army family. As a youth, he volunteered at the California Youth Authority where he spoke to and encouraged youth in the juvenile justice system. For now, Lincoln is excited about his lead, but cautious. “There are definitely more votes to be counted and we’re definitely not counting our chickens before they hatch,” Lincoln said. “We still feel really good.” Stockton has a population of 312,697 residents, according to the 2019 U.S. Census. SACRAMENTO – ­ Last Friday, the Bureau of Cannabis Control announced that it has awarded over $29 million in public university research grant funding to universities across California. $1,866,311 has been awarded to CSU Dominguez Hills to conduct research on the cannabis industry in the South Bay Los Angeles area. “I am delighted that CSU Dominguez Hills has been awarded this critical funding for the important work they are doing,” said Senator Bradford. “Their research will assist in understanding the role that the cannabis industry plays in economic revitalization and equity in our community, informing policy decisions for years.” Research grant funding from the Bureau of Cannabis Control was made available with the passage of Proposition 64 in 2016. Research proposals had to fall within one of the several specified

categories, including public health, criminal justice and public safety, economic, environmental impacts, and the cannabis industry. CSU Dominguez Hills, led by the Mervyn M. Dymally Institute, was one of thirty-four grant funding awardees. “We are honored our research proposal was accepted and funded,” said Dr. Anthony Samad, Executive Director of the Dymally Institute. “We look forward to what our research produces.” Senator Bradford has been a champion on cannabis equity policy and has continuously advocated for funding at the state level to support these efforts. Lou Yeboah “Listen carefully, and read with discernment,” says the Lord. For something important is about to be uttered.” [Revelation 13:9]. Remember, I told you that Satan is an imitator. Right now, he has the world right where he wants it; eating out of the palm of his hand. And by his words, he has stirred up a nation and convinced them that they could rule the world. He has convinced them that they are superior to all others, and like a fool, they have bowed before this hellish king, and given him what they have steadfastly refused to give Me. [Revelation 12:10]. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” Not knowing that the leader is Satanically empowered. Not knowing that Satan has raised him up so that he can receive worship. [Revelation 13:4-10]. Not knowing that because they have chosen to worship him, I will abandon them to their choice, with all the consequences that come with such a decision. If anyone has an ear, let him hear. Two beasts are described in the Book of Revelation chapter 13, one from the sea [vs. 1] and one from the land [vs. 11]. With the beast out of the sea, the one from the land, although he claims that he is the peace maker, he is not. He comes as a great source of darkness into the world. He comes not to save the world, but to damn the world. Listen and listen carefully! There is an urgency in the world that has

never existed before. Your entire life is about to change. Events will unfold soon to destroy the Western world’s way of life as you know it. Soon, mankind will suffer through the most devastating, bloody war in human history —called, in biblical terminology, the “Great Tribulation.” A war such as has not been since the beginning the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. [Matthew 24:21-22]. Yes, a major war in the Middle East is coming soon, and it will be massive. The players are in place and this coming war will be the birth pangs of the Gog-Magog Wars as foretold by God to the prophet Ezekiel. “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass.” [Luke 21:36]. Because nothing in the past can even remotely compare to what is about to take place. Listen, and listen carefully! The Book of Daniel was written for your time. Its prophecies speak with increased meaning to your generation. The Bible prophet, Daniel, outlined in vivid detail world events now unfolding before your eyes. They provide “inside information” on the enemy’s plans. They reveal the last-day delusions Satan uses to deceive the world’s population. They also carefully outline God’s strategy for the end time. The days ahead will be difficult. A crisis of unimagined fury will break upon the world. Read and understand the Book of Daniel, for it contains truth for your time. In it, the stories reveal how to be ready for earth’s final days. The prophecies reveal when these last-day events will occur. Understand the significance of today’s news and where it is all leading. Learn to discern. Yearn to discern. For the failure to discern the times and the threat is detrimental. [2Peter 3:3-4]. The exhortation, “Listen carefully and read with discernment!”

Watch it Spring Forth Karen Georgia A. Thompson Wider Church Ministries & Operations and Co-Executive for Global Ministries The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world as we know it. The vulnerabilities of the world are on display as we negotiate sheltering in place, social distancing, and wearing masks. These adaptations are themselves signs of the history of un-wellness among us, even as we wrestle with the grief and pain resulting from the escalating loss of lives globally. We are also grieving and mourning the dramatic fissures that are present among us, fault lines that have been exacerbated as the virus spreads disproportionately among vulnerable communities. Much has changed around us, yet there is much that remains the same. I hear the question being asked, “When will we return to normal?” And the lament from some that echoes the same sentiment: “I wish things were the way they were before Covid-19.” In the midst of mourning the loss of “normal” is the reality that normal was and is relative. Whose normal are we mourning? What would it mean to return to the “normal” that is problematized by a chasmic racial divide, a widening wealth gap, poor health care, lack of education, violations of human rights, and a

destructive brand of nationalism that is framed in conservative politics and religious extremism? In these days of “new normal,” we are called to an examination of what has been made normative in our communities and in the world. The establishment of “normal” – and what is named normative – is rooted in dominant culture narratives at the expense of marginalized and vulnerable communities. “Normal” is where privilege has long resided. We are mourning the loss of normal. Longing for the days before pandemic when we had the freedoms to entertain and to be entertained in the company of those who are important to us. In these days of sheltering in place, we are being brought into the reality of many who do not have the freedom of movement we enjoy. Restriction of movement is normal for refugees, some on the move, others held in confinement while governments decide their fate. The new normal is one in which we wear masks to reduce potential risk for ourselves and others when we are in public. In communities with high pollution in various parts of the world, wearing a mask is the alternative to breathing in continued in next 2 columns

Watch it Spring Forth...continued the pollution and poor air quality. Climate change and pollution create a different normal for which we should hold resistance, even as we lament having to cover our faces in these days. A return to normal is not possible if we believe in a just world for all. In these days, we should be dreaming of a reality in which all people have the freedoms guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The revelations of the moment should point us to action and advocacy, toward the imagination of a “new normal” world that is free from the injustices laid bare before us. The exposed fault lines can no longer be ignored or pushed aside

for later. The urgency of our work for justice must include grappling with the ways in which the pandemics of Covid-19, racism, and other social illnesses need our efforts to be eradicated. Mourning of the loss of the world as we know it must recognize that “normal” has meant the lack of justice for all. Alex Trebek Longtime Jeopardy! game show host Alex Trebek has died after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer at his home in Los Angeles. He revealed on March 6, 2019, that though he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and vowed to beat it. A year later Trebek opened up about his cancer treatment and reflected on his life in his memoir The Answer Is…. Reflections in My Life released in July. A native of Canada, Trebek became a naturalized United States citizen in 1998. He received the Daytime Emmy Award seven times for his work on Jeopardy!. He was married to Jean Currivan for thirty years and they had two

children, Matthew and Emily. Trebeck wrote he was proud he lived a “good, full life’ at 80-years-old and accomplished many things. “one thing they’re not going to say at my funeral as part of the eulogy is., “He has taken from us too soon.” He wrote. “I’m about to turn 80. Ana Applegate, newly appointed assistant superintendent Longtime District Educator and San Bernardino Native Promoted to Key Position The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Board of Education recently promoted career educator and San Bernardino native Ana Applegate to assistant superintendent of the Educational Services Division, which oversees the academic achievement of students from kindergarten through high school. Applegate, first hired to teach at Hunt Elementary School in 1993, will oversee key departments like Elementary Instruction

and Secondary Education, Professional Development, and Multilingual Programs, among others vital to student learning. With an estimated 48,000 students, SBCUSD is the ninth largest school district in California. Applegate assumes her new leadership role amid challenging school closures prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, which has placed greater emphasis and demand on remote teaching and learning. She will be tasked with strengthening the District’s distance learning program while also preparing for the eventual

return of students to in-class learning when it’s deemed safe to reopen schools, as guided by local and state guidelines. Although Applegate is a familiar face inside and outside the District, she will be formally introduced to the community during the November 17 virtual Board of Education meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m. on the District’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube. com/user/SanBdoCitySchools. Over her 28-year tenure with SBCUSD, Applegate has built a solid track record of advocacy on behalf of all students, using her personal experiences of growing up in San Bernardino and being the parent of former SBCUSD students, to shape part of her work. While Applegate expressed excitement for her new role, she emphasized the importance of taking a collaborative, servant-leadership approach. “I’m committed to working to provide all our students the highest quality educational experience in order to prepare them for college and careers,” Applegate said. “The relationships we build with students, families, and employees are an important foundation for our work.” Most recently Applegate served as director of Multilingual

Programs, where she was responsible for overseeing all of the English Learner programs, implementing the International Newcomer Academy at Pacific High School, and the trilingual program (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese) at Belvedere Elementary School. Prior to that role, she held a variety of positions, including mentoring new teachers. Applegate earned her bachelor’s degree and bilingual crosscultural credential from California State University, San Bernardino. She earned her master’s degree in Education Administration from Azusa Pacific University. Applegate is the third cabinet member to be promoted from within the District’s administrative ranks in recent months, which is attributed to the quality of educational leadership within the District, said Interim Superintendent Dr. Harold J. Vollkommer. “As educators, we are in the business of building human potential,” Vollkommer said. “Ana is a progressive leader with a clear vision to help our students succeed academically. San Ber nardino – Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes honored Shirrell McCarey as the 2020 Veteran of the Year for the 47th Assembly District, during the 4th Annual event held virtually this year due to COVID-19. Shirrell McCarey served in the U.S. Navy, both active duty and reserve, from 1977 to 2012 as a Naval Commander. During this time Shirrell McCarey would serve in the final stages of the Vietnam War and she would also serve in the Gulf War. Her military career would see her be deployed to Vietnam, Grenada, Chernobyl, and the Middle East . After her time in the military, she would become a mental health advisor for the Loma Linda Mental Health Advisory Board for fifteen years. In addition to her service and leadership, she maintains a membership with the California Leadership for Women, Cal Vets, Disabled American Veterans, and is the Lecture Knight for the Elk Lodge in Victorville. Mrs. McCarey’s primary interest is

serving as a mental health advisor for veterans across the country. As a mental health advisor, Mrs. McCarey acts as a counselor to veterans suffering from things like PTSD, other mental health issues, and physical issues. This role also allows her to act as a mediator between veterans and their doctors regarding their mental and physical needs. After a review of the many nominations, twenty-five veterans were selected as finalists from throughout the community for the Veteran of the Year award which honors veterans who live, work, or volunteer in the 47th Assembly District who have served our country, protecting our freedoms, and who continue to serve our community. “I congratulate Shirrell McCarey for her selection as the 2020 Veteran of the Year for the 47th Assembly District. Mrs. McCarey served our country honorably during her time in the U.S. Navy and she was honorable discharged in 2011. Mrs. McCarey has received several awards over

her illustrious career including the Unit Citation Award and Good Conduct Medal but the award she is most proud of is the one she received from Loma Lima VA clinic. She received her award on May 25, 2016, after saving the lives of three veterans during a hostage situation where she was able to get the suspect to surrender peacefully via negotiations. It is long past time for California to take measurable action to eliminate exclusionary practices that contribute to the preschool to prison pipeline. Preschool providers should collect and track data on rates of expulsion and suspension in early learning and preschool settings. At a minimum, four dominant categories should disaggregate the data. They are: sex, race, eth nicit y, and disabilit y status. Information could be housed locally and by the state. Preschool providers should also be required to provide due process before kicking a student out. "California's early learning and care system continues to suffer from historic and structural racism and sexism," according to Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, Santa Clara County Superintendent of schools. "Policies and procedures such as incentivizing providers to expel children who are

Thanksgiving Holiday School And Meal Schedule Lifestyle News San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) will celebrate the Thanksgiving Break November 23–27, 2020. Students are not expected to participate in distance learning but may have homework or other assignments that are due when they return to online instruction on Monday, November 30, 2020. Middle College High School students follow the San Bernardino Valley College schedule. Due to the holiday closure, Grab and Go meals will only be available on Monday, November 23, 2020, from 8 to 11 a.m. at 10 meal distribution sites. Families will be able to pick up seven days worth of breakfast and lunch per child. Children do not need to be

present when picking up meals. Snacks and dinner will not be provided during the Thanksgiving Break. Only the following sites will be open for Grab and Go meals on November 23: Cajon High School, Del Vallejo Leadership & STEAM Academy, Golden Valley Middle School, Indian Springs High School, King Middle School, Muscoy Elementary School, Pacific High School, Richardson PREP HI Middle School, San Bernardino High School, and San Gorgonio High School. “If Trump can’t pardon himself, he would likely have to preemptively resign from office so that Vice President Mike Pence could assume the presidency and pardon him,” the magazine reported, echoing the editorial by Brent Budowsky in The Hill. According to multiple news reports, with the walls of defeat from the 2020 election closing in, lame-duck President Donald Trump may be seeking a way to avoid prosecution after he is no longer in office while still claiming victory in the election. Numerous outlets are reporting that Trump is preparing for life after the White House, planning a major media platform that could net him billions of dollars because of his robust following. He’s also examining a host of presidential pardons, including for his family members and himself.

One for mer Democrat aide even floated this wild prediction on Nov. 14: In an editorial for The Hill, Brent Budowsky, who served as an aide to former Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Texas) and former Rep. Bill Alexander (D-Ark.), said “Trump will resign the presidency, and [Vice President] Mike Pence will pardon him.” “A presidential pardon by Pence would not offer protection from cases originating in states, but those cases will be far more manageable if they are not sunk into a morass of federal cases that

only a federal pardon can protect him from,” Budowsky added. “While I suspect we will learn that he is not nearly as wealthy as he claims, Trump can reap extravagant financial rewards from the mother of all business deals which he could conclude shortly after he leaves office.” CNN reported that current and former Trump administration officials say there’s been minimal preparation for an expected onslaught of clemencies, as Trump is still pursuing dubious legal challenges to the election.

But his Twitter feed over the past three years offers a working list of where the President might turn to wield his pardon power – primarily toward those targeted by former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. “Perhaps the biggest looming pardon question is whether Trump will consider granting himself a pardon, amid state investigations into his business and finances and the prospect of federal investigators scrutinizing him after he leaves office,” CNN’s Evan Perez noted.

Vanity Fair, Forbes, The Independent, and other news outlets are also publishing articles related to Trump’s possibility of pardoning himself. Each outlet speculates that the President is sure to pardon Trump organization employees who might come under investigation. Any pardon Trump potentially receives would only apply to alleged federal crimes. A federal pardon would not hinder prosecution in those cases. Only the governor could offer Trump such protection. Trump’s adversarial and sometimes volatile relationship with New York Democratic Mayor Andrew Cuomo makes such a state-level pardon challenging to imagine. “The ‘Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment,’ is vested in the President,” the Department of Justice wrote in August 1974, days before President Richard Nixon resigned. “This raises the question of whether the President can pardon himself. Under the fundamental rule that no one may be a judge in his own case, it would seem that the question should be answered in the negative,” Forbes reported.
