Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them and these will continue till they have resisted either with words or blows or with both. A [White] House in Pandemic Cannot Stand NNPA NEWSWIRE — Richard Stengel, an under Secretary of State in President Barack Obama’s administration and an editor at Time, suggested that Trump’s condition may have approached a fatal point, saying, “I’m not a doctor, but throwing an experimental antibody cocktail, plus dexamethasone, plus remdesivir, plus supplemental oxygen all at the same time suggests the house was on fire and they had to put it out. Not one of the 7 million Americans infected got the same treatment.”

Don’t Mess with Our Side Hustle: Thousands of Folks Depend on It By Jay King

By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

The virus is “coming from inside the White House,” blared the latest headline from The Atlantic, one of a multitude of news organizations to cover the surreal events surrounding President Donald Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis and subsequent behavior. “Asking whether the celebration of Amy Coney Barrett’s [U.S. Supreme Court] nomination was a ‘super-spreader’ event misses the point: Trump’s irresponsibility made this crisis likely,” The Atlantic continued. In his motorcade around Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, Trump’s ill-advised ride raised alarm bells inside and out of the White House and is only one incident in many that points to an administration in disarray. Dr. Sean Conley, who heads the White House medical team, told reporters that doctors had begun treating the President with dexamethasone, a steroid that the medical experts said is usually reserved for those with the most severe cases of Covid-19. Information from the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that dexamethasone can suppress the immune system and is “potentially harmful for patients who take it too early” after their COVID diagnosis. Trump announced a positive test on October 1 and, within two days, began the steroid treatment. “Trump’s dexamethasone drug is risky if used early,” tweeted Epidemiologist and Health Economist Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding. “The WHO warns that this drug used by Trump is a powerful anti-inflammatory for ‘severely ill and critical patients,’ and can also increase viral replication too and make Covid-19 worse.”

Richard Stengel, an under Secretary of State in President Barack Obama’s administration and an editor at Time, suggested that Trump’s condition may have approached a fatal point. “I’m not a doctor, but throwing an experimental antibody cocktail, plus dexamethasone, p l u s r e m d e s i v i r, p l u s supplemental oxygen all at the same time suggests the house was on fire and they had to put it out. Not one of the 7 million Americans infected got the same treatment,” Stengel determined. Dr. Megan Ranney, an emergency physician at the Rhode Island Hospital and an associate professor at Brown University, said dexamethasone could cause psychosis and mania. She also called some of Trump’s behavior, like the joyride around Walter Reed, “c e r t a i n ly c o n c e r n i ng.” Added Dr. Vin Gupta, a member of the faculty at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation: “The treatment the doctors report they administered suggest the president has COVID pneumonia of at least mild severity.” Despite his unhealthy condition, Trump briefly left the hospital on October 4 and rode in his motorcade up and down Rockville Pike in Bethesda, Maryland. W hite House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced she had tested positive for the coronavirus. While the President had previously referred to the virus that has claimed more than 210,000 American lives as a hoax, he’s sending mixed signals about just how serious

he’s taking his own diagnosis. It wasn’t im mediately known what Trump’s personal physicians at Walter Reed Medical Center thought of the President’s impromptu trip outside of the hospital, but other doctors expressed disbelief. “It’s all ridiculous,” noted an exasperated Dr. Ebony Hilton, an associated professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Anesthesia at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. “If Donald Trump were my patient, in unstable condition with a contagious illness, and he suddenly left the hospital to go for a car ride that endangers himself and others, I’d call security to restrain him and then perform a psychiatric evaluation to examine his decisionmaking capacity,” declared former Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen. “This is infuriating,” blasted Dr. Taison Bell, an emergency depar tment physician specializing in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Virginia. “The White House is past the point of just making wrong decisions at almost every juncture. They are now literally making up ways to do irresponsible things.” Tw e e t e d Harvard Medical School graduate, Dr. Michael McClurkin: “I cannot believe the President endangered his staff by asking them to drive him around the block to take photographs. He’s mad.” Trump’s handling of his coronavirus diagnosis has even infuriated the Secret Service, a federal agency charged with protecting the President.

Three agents, who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, expressed outrage at the President’s hospital antics. The network noted that agents have tested positive for the virus while traveling for Trump’s political rallies, which he insisted on maintaining even against federal health guidelines. According to CNN, as employees self-quarantine or isolate in place, others have been forced to work longer hours to fill the void. “That should never have happened,” one current Secret Service agent who works on the presidential and first family detail said after Trump’s driveby, adding that those agents who went along for the ride would now be required to quarantine. “I mean, I wouldn’t want to be around them,” the agent said, according to CNN, expressing a view that multiple people at the Secret Service also voiced in the wake of the October 4 appearance. “The frustration with how we’re treated when it comes to decisions on this illness goes back before this, though. We’re not disposable.” Another veteran Secret Service agent also expressed deep dismay at the Walter Reed ride. However, he was sympathetic for those around the President, given the difficulty in pushing back on the commander-in-chief. “You can’t say no,” the agent said. While agents in the Secret Service have the power to say no to activities that could put a president in danger, they can’t say no in situations that could put themselves in danger. A third agent told CNN: “It was simply reckless.”

As President and CEO of the California Black Chamber of Commerce I know the importance of creating and keeping jobs especially in the Black community. I also understand the damage done with every job that is lost and how much worse that is in the middle of a recession that has already taken a toll on the state’s entire workforce. In most states, when you hear of a business closing, you assume the business was beaten by its competitors as a casualty of the free market. But in California, when you hear a business closed you assume it was beaten by regulations. Federal regulations. State regulations. County regulations. City regulations. And now, there’s yet another state law focused on preventing independent contractors from finding the independent and flexible work they want and need. This newest attack, Assembly Bill 5, is now jeopardizing hundreds of thousands of jobs at a time when we need them most. We all want 2020 to be the year we forget, but at this rate it’s the hundreds of thousands of gig worker jobs that will be forgotten. Prop 22 offers a chance to change course and reverse this damage. Prop 22 would protect the app-based jobs Black Californians need and the services all Californians rely on. Prop 22 also improves the quality of app-based work by providing drivers with an earnings guarantee of 120% of minimum wage plus 30 cents per mile compensation toward expenses and new benefits like health care. And it keeps food and medicine deliveries available for the people who depend on them.

Saving these jobs is good for everyone. But it's necessary for the Black community. With an unemployment rate far higher than the general public, many Blacks rely on independent work just to get by. App-based services like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Postmates have proven to be leaders at providing income opportunities for Blacks. Losing jobs hurts everyone, but the statistics prove that Blacks are hurt the most. By May of this year we were only 2 months into the pandemic and California had already reached 15.5% unemployment after losing 2.3 million jobs. The Pew Research Center reported that COVID-19 impacts affected lower-income people the hardest. Despite hopes for a V-shaped recovery, the losses have been long lasting. Half of adults who lost jobs during the pandemic are still unemployed. Like many financial indicators, Blacks feel the impacts greater than other groups. The Pew Center also noted that 18% of whites reported difficulty paying bills during the pandemic. That’s compared to 43% for Blacks. The impacts of job loss are real, and all indications are that this recovery will be slow. Each lost job represents a family depending on those wages. The true impact of poverty is difficult to capture on a chart because it’s hard to measure the depth of pain. California should be doing everything in its power to keep existing jobs and create new ones. Instead, we’re on the brink of losing more. Hundreds of thousands of more jobs lost will only deepen the statewide impacts of the recession and further slow our recovery.

Kanye is on Your 2020 California Ballot as a Vice Presidential Candidate Tanu Henry | California Black Media

When you get your California election ballot soon – that’s if you don’t have it already --expect to see Kanye West’s name on it. The 43-year-old rapper and business mogul is on the California ballot as the candidate for vice president on the American Independent Party (AIP) ticket. The presidential candidate on the AIP ticket

is San Diego-based Mexican American businessman Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente Guerra. Founded in 1967, the AIP is a far-right political party and is one of the fastest growing political organizations in the state with nearly half a million registered members, according to an LA Times survey. Many of those Californians say, though, they

did not realize they had registered with the party and were not informed about its platform that is pro-life, anti-gay marriage, antigun control and anti-immigration. The AIP is also the party that nominated racist and segregationist Alabama Gov. George Wallace for president in 1968. The party also nominated Pres. Trump for president in 2016, although the current POTUS did not accept or acknowledge the honor. Geurra, a 66-year-old car dealer, has appeared on the ballot in several races around California and in other parts of the country running for POTUS, senator, governor and mayor. Both West and Guerra say they were not informed about their nominations by the AIP before their names appeared on the 2020 California ballot. In different races for political office, Guerra has been affiliated with the Reform Party, the American Delta Party, Natural Law Party, Alliance Party, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. “I am campaigning to be next president of our great country – not vice president,” West said in a statement last week after news broke that the AIP had put him on its ticket. “The political party in California that listed my name as its VP candidate has done so without my knowledge.” Instead of voting for him as

the vice-presidential candidate on the AIP ticket, West is asking Californians to write him in for president at the bottom of the ticket. “Californians, I ask you for your vote for president and urge you to write in ‘Kanye West,’” he says. On the Fourth of July, West announced his own campaign for the United States presidency on the “Birthday Party” ticket. “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for President of the United States,” West tweeted on Independence Day, followed by the hasthtag #vision2020. So far, West is on the ballot in 12 states on the “Birthday Party” ticket. They are Kentucky, Te n ne s s e e, M i s si s sip pi , Louisiana, Arkansas, Vermont, Oklahoma, Utah, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado. He missed deadlines to file in 28 other states, including California. AIP vice chairman Markham Robinson has admitted he wants to steal votes away from Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 general election. He says another reason the party nominated West is his faith. "His platform was really pretty good. We loved the fact that he used scriptural references to justify his points,” Robinson told Newsweek.

EDITORIAL

The End of Police Brutality Solutions are often so obvious that they go unnoticed. How long did it take for us to figure out the advantage of placing wheels on luggage? Police misconduct is a pervasive problem that costs American taxpayers millions of hard eared dollars, not to mention innocent lives. These issues would not exist if the unions were as committed to protecting the public as they are to protecting the interests of its members. Rogue cops exist because the majority of good cops face retribution when calling out the misconduct of fellow officers. The unions protect officers that they know are unqualified and even a threat to the public. So lets end police brutality and misconduct immediately by simply making the police unions liable for the conduct of its members. I guarantee you that if the actions of a racist cop forced the police union to dip into its coffers for millions of dollars, police brutality would end next week! Of course, there will always be misconduct in human interaction. But I don’t think we’d see unarmed citizens shot in the back 15 times as a matter

of course. If qualified immunity was limited, no longer protecting police from egregious conduct, we’d see an immediate decrease in misconduct and the beginning of a better overall relationship with communities of color. However, this must go hand in hand with real efforts to increase real opportunities for our youth. Unions are not all bad. Most are just mismanaged and greed driven, putting union dues and membership over the common good. As we contemplate these issues, let us not forget the teachers unions, who protect the jobs of incompetent and even dangerous personnel. I realize the complexity of these problems, but I sincerely believe that when we make the Police Unions liable for the actions of their members, we’ll see less killing, more cooperation and a better society. Omnitrans Seeks Input from Passengers and Public in Bus Stop, Safety Survey Community News

(San Bernardino, CA) – As part of Omnitrans’ ongoing efforts to provide a safe transportation system for everyone, Omnitrans is inviting transit riders and the public to provide feedback regarding safety in and around bus stops and projects that might encourage them to use the bus more often. Feedback from the survey will inform proposals for additional safety projects at and around bus stops, part of a Bus Stop Safety Improvement Plan funded by a grant from the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Examples of projects that could be included in the plan include expansions of existing Omnitrans projects, such as installation of more bus stop lighting and emergency telephones, as well as new partnerships and programs. The plan, which will be completed in late 2021, is being developed by KTUA, an experienced planning, design, and outreach consulting team. A public survey will be open October 12th through October 26th. Survey participants will be entered into a drawing for a 31-day Omnitrans transit pass or a $20 gift card. In addition to the survey, there will be opportunities to participate in interviews and virtual “walk audits” to provide input. The survey and information about the plan are available at www.omnitrans.org/safetyplan.

California is expanding aid and protections to health care workers as the COVID-19 pandemic continues through two new laws and an executive order. Late last month, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that orders new actions on health care in response to the pandemic. The order allows public health officials working to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic to participate in the Secretary of State’s addressconfidentiality program, known as the Safe at Home program. The Safe at Home program provides substitute addresses for groups that need protection against harassment or violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence victims. Multiple public health officials have reported receiving death threats, including Los Angeles County Health Director Barbara Ferrer and Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody. “Our public health officers have all too often faced targeted harassment and stalking,” said Secretary of State Alex Padilla. This “program can help provide more peace of mind to the public health officials who have been on the frontlines of California’s COVID-19 response.” The order also authorizes the Department of Managed Health Care to gather data to assess the impacts of the pandemic on health care providers and health care service plans.

Gov. Newsom also recently signed two bills, AB 2537 and SB 275, that would increase the amount of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health care workers. Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona) introduced AB 2537. The law requires hospitals to stockpile a threemonth supply of PPE by April 2021. “We are currently experiencing something we haven't before, and healthcare workers are at the frontlines of it all. While dealing with this pandemic, the last thing our workers should be worried about is whether or not, they will be protected from exposure. We must protect those providing care so that they too can continue to do their work,” said Rodriguez. SB 275 mandates the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to establish a 90-day PPE stockpile for health care and other essential workers within one year. It also requires major health care employers, such as hospitals, nursing homes and dialysis clinics, to build an additional 45-day stockpile of PPE by 2023 or later. Under SB 275, essential workers will receive PPE from the CDPH stockpile include school workers, childcare providers, inhome support providers, and any workers who provide services directly supporting patient care. (Photo: iStockphoto / NNPA) New commitments and public policy efforts will address key drivers of the racial wealth divide, reduce systemic racism against Black and Latinx people, and support employees October 8, 2020 – Today, JPMorgan Chase announced new long-term commitments to advance racial equity. The firm will harness its expertise in business, policy and philanthropy and commit an additional $30 billion over the next five years to provide economic opportunity to underserved communities, especially the Black and Latinx communities. Structural barriers in the U.S. have created profound racial inequalities that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The existing racial wealth gap puts a strain on families’ economic mobility and restricts the U.S. economy. Building on the firm’s existing investments, this new commitment will drive an inclusive economic recovery, support employees and break down barriers of systemic racism. “Systemic racism is a tragic part of America’s history,” said Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co. “We can do more and do better to break down systems that have propagated racism and widespread economic inequality, especially for Black and Latinx people. It’s long past time that society addresses racial inequities in a more tangible, meaningful way.” Over the next five years, the firm expects these new commitments, which include loans, equity and direct funding, to: Promote and Expand Affordable Housing and Homeownership for Underserved Communities Originate an additional 40,000 home purchase loans for Black and Latinx households. The firm will also provide $2 billion in philanthropic capital over the next five years to drive an inclusive economic recovery and support Black, Latinx and other underserved communities. This extends and increases the firm’s current five-year $1.75 billion philanthropic commitment made in 2018. It will also include an emphasis on supporting Blackand Latinx-led organizations. A fact sheet detailing J PMorga n Cha se’s new commitments is available here. Holding Ourselves Accountable Measuring impact and ensuring accountability is central to these new commitments. Progress will be tracked regularly and shared with senior leadership across the firm, as well as externally with the Chase Advisory Panel, to assess performance and hold the business accountable. These efforts will further allow for maximum impact and bring an enhanced equity lens to the firm’s business. Comments on the Importance of Advancing Racial Equity “We have a responsibility to intentionally drive economic inclusion for people that have been left behind,” said Brian Lamb, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion, JPMorgan Chase. “The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated long-standing inequities for Black and Latinx people around the world. We are using this catalytic moment to create change and economic opportunities that enhance racial equity for Black and Latinx communities.” “To ensure the Latino community can thrive, we must work together to break down persistent obstacles to opportunity created by systemic racism,” said Janet Murguía, President and CEO, UnidosUS. “JPMorgan Chase’s new commitments will help ensure that the American dream is accessible to more Latinos today, create a multiplier effect through generations, and lead to a stronger country with greater shared prosperity.” “America’s racial wealth gap has been a persistent injustice, and it can no longer be tolerated

as business as usual,” said Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League. “I am heartened to see JPMorgan’s specific, measurable commitments that we believe will address decades of systemic racism toward Black communities – and will bolster the wellbeing of families across the country, as well as our collective economy. We are proud to work alongside JPMorgan Chase to make these changes and help craft conditions for lasting racial equity.” “All Americans deserve equitable access to affordable housing and the physical, emotional and financial security it represents,” said Lisa Rice, CEO, National Fair Housing Alliance. “JPMorgan Chase’s new commitments will help make owning or renting a reality for more Black and Latinx families, whose housing access has been impeded by decades of systemic racism and are now disproportionately affected by the impact of COVID-19. Addressing the affordability crisis, now overlaid with the pandemic, will require many players on many fronts, and these commitments are concrete, meaningful steps in the right direction.” “This moment requires leaders and their institutions to shake off the husks of complacency and to stand in transformative solidarity with the more than 100 million in America who face the burdens of a democracy and economy that does not yet allow them to participate, prosper, and reach their full potential,” said Dr. Michael McAfee, President and CEO, PolicyLink. “JPMorgan Chase is beginning the journey to answer this call. Its targeted investments in Black and Brown communities and its leadership advancing public policy ensures all people in America participate in a just society, live in a healthy community of opportunity, and prosper in an equitable economy is the type of creative spark that will usher in America’s renewal.” JPMorgan Chase & Co. Genetics, Diagnosis, Treatment: NIH Takes on Sickle Cell Disease Globally

NNPA NEWSWIRE — Sickle cell disease affects 20 million people worldwide, including at least 100,000 in the United States, mainly African Americans, but Hispanics and Asian-Americans, too. To help address the problem on a global scale, the NHLBI has been supporting programs in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 75 percent of the sickle cell disease births worldwide occur. SPARCo, with a hub in Tanzania, and additional sites in Nigeria and Ghana, works to develop an infrastructure for sickle cell disease research, health care, education, and training to take place in Africa.

“A person’s health should not be limited by their geographic location, whether it’s in rural America or sub-Saharan Africa,” said Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., director of the NHLBI. “Harnessing the power of science is needed to transcend borders if we want to improve health for Health News Each year, some 150,000 children in Nigeria are born with sickle cell disease, the most common—and often life-threatening—inherited blood disorder in the world. “I was not happy when I read that Nigeria will have the highest contribution to the global burden of sickle cell disease by 2050—if we continue at the present birth rate and the level of inactivity in newborn screening,” said hematologist Obiageli Nnodu, M.D., the lead researcher in Nigeria for the Sickle Pan African Research Consortium (SPARCo), funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. “As a country, we can do better than that. After all, this is a disease where children die undiagnosed, and largely from preventable causes such as bacterial infections.” Sickle cell disease affects 20 million people worldwide,

including at least 100,000 in the United States, mainly African Americans, but Hispanics and Asian-Americans, too. To help address the problem on a global scale, the NHLBI has been supporting programs in subSaharan Africa, where more than 75 percent of the sickle cell disease births worldwide occur. SPARCo, with a hub in Tanzania, and additional sites in Nigeria and Ghana, works to develop an infrastructure for sickle cell disease research, health care, education, and training to take place in Africa. “We are showing that with effective partnerships, significant advances in health and biomedical science can be achieved,” said Tanzania-based Julie Makani, M.D., Ph.D., who leads the SPARCo consortium. SPARCo, in collaboration with the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Center, led by Ambroise Wonkam, M.D., in South Africa, created

Sickle In Africa, which has a growing electronic registry of more than 10,000 individuals with sickle cell disease. “The genetic diversity of Africa’s population allows scientific research that will increase our understanding of how a disease caused by a single gene can manifest in such different ways,” Makani explained. Newborn screening, as Nnodu noted, is the first step to reduce mortality and suffering for these children, and for that, they need good tests readily available at the point of care. That’s why NHLBI supports research towards development of diagnostics, such as a new rapid result test that is relatively inexpensive, accurate, and can provide a timely diagnosis of sickle cell disease. The test does not require sophisticated laboratory equipment, electricity, refrigeration, or highly trained personnel—a critical advantage for countries with few resources.

On the treatment front, a large multinational NHLBI-funded clinical trial found that a daily hydroxyurea pill was safe and effective for young children living with sickle cell disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The NHLBI also has its sights on developing genetic therapies for the disease, as part of a newly announced NIH collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of the partnership, which also addresses HIV, is to advance possible genebased cures to clinical trials in the United States and relevant countries in sub-Saharan Africa within the next seven to 10 years. “A person’s health should not be limited by their geographic location, whether it’s in rural America or sub-Saharan Africa,” said Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., director of the NHLBI. “Harnessing the power of science is needed to transcend borders if we want to improve health for all.”

Three ways to cast a ballot this New Kwanzaa Stamp Now Available... Presidential General Election continued State/Government News As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, voting will be different this year to accommodate fo r s o c i a l d i s t a n c i n g. All registered voters in California were mailed vote by mail ballots. In Riverside County, ballots started going out by mail on Oct. 5, with the final mailings on Oct. 9. There are three ways to cast, or return, ballots this year: through the mail, at a drop off site or in a voter assistance center. “We want all registered voters to know their options for casting their ballot this year,” said Riverside County Registrar of Voters Rebecca Spencer. “To avoid potentially long lines at voter assistance centers, consider returning your ballot by mail or at a drop off location. Returning your ballot early also means it will be included in the first round of Election Night results at 8 p.m.” First, ballots can be returned through the U.S. Postal Service mail system in the pre-paid

envelope provided with the ballot. Envelopes must be signed by the voter. All ballots postmarked on or before Nov. 3 and received up to 17 days after the election will be counted. Second, ballots can be cast at any one of the 80 ballot drop off locations, including specific city halls, libraries and community centers. These drop off locations are already accepting ballots throughout Riverside County. Lastly, if someone requires in person assistance with their ballot, such as a need for a replacement ballot or to use the ballot marking machine, a voter may visit an inperson voter assistance center from Oct. 31 – Nov. 3. Unlike polling places, voters are not assigned to a specific location and may visit any one of the 130 voter assistance centers. Visit VoteInfo.net for a complete listing of all voter assistance centers in Riverside County.

New Kwanzaa Stamp Now Available State/Government News WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Postal Service continues to celebrate Kwanzaa, which honors the values and beliefs around African American heritage, by dedicating a new Kwanzaa stamp today.

News of this Forever stamp is being shared with hashtag #KwanzaaStamps “This new Kwanzaa stamp captures the essence of the African continued in next 2 columns

American cultural celebration. The stamp depicts the profile of a reflective woman with a kinara, or candleholder, with seven lit candles in front of her,” said USPS Regional Processing Operations Eastern Vice President Dane Coleman, the dedicating official. “The stamp, which was handsketched and digitally colored, evokes a sense of inner peace with its cool tones and vibrant design elements to give a festive feel to the celebration of Kwanzaa.” The stamp is available nationwide today. A virtual dedication ceremony will be posted on the Postal Service’s Facebook and Twitter pages. The event includes remarks from Coleman and Linda Hazel Humes, adjunct assistant professor, Africana Studies Department, John Jay College; and music by Sanga of the Valley.

Kwanzaa takes place over seven days annually from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, bringing family, community and culture together for many. Each year, millions of African Americans gather with friends and family throughout Kwanzaa week to honor the Pan-African holiday’s seven founding principles — unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba) and faith (imani). Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of these seven principles, collectively known as the Nguzo Saba. Kwanzaa was created in 1966, drawing on a variety of African traditions, deriving its name from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning “first fruits.” Kwanzaa is a festive time for rejoicing in the prospect of health, prosperity and good luck in the coming year. It is also a time for contemplation and recollection of past hardships, faced by individuals and communities, and the ways history can inform and impact future happiness. Art director Antonio Alcala designed the stamp, and Andrea Pippins was the illustrator. The Kwanzaa stamp is being issued as a Forever stamp in a pane of 20. Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.

L.A. County Settles Immigrant Detention Suit for $14 Million State/Government News LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today approved settlement of a class action lawsuit brought by immigrants who were unlawfully detained by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department — sometimes for months — because of “ICE hold” requests from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The holds, also called “immigration detainers,” forced individuals to be held in county jails after they were legally entitled to be released. Pending approval by a federal judge, the settlement marks the end of the lawsuit Roy v County of Los Angeles originally filed in 2012. During the time period covered by this settlement, Los Angeles County was responsible for holding more people in its jails on ICE detainers than any other county and most other states in the nation. The sheriff’s department agreed to stop the practice entirely in July 2014. Co-counsels on the settlement are the civil rights law firm Kaye, McLane, Bednarski & Litt; the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California; the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON); and the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC). “Let this settlement be a wake-up call to all those law enforcement agencies around the country that today continue to jail people unlawfully at ICE’s warrantless requests,” said Jennie Pasquarella, ACLU SoCal director of immigrants’ rights and senior staff attorney. “They should stop or be held liable in damages to all the people they’ve unlawfully detained.” More than 18,500 people are entitled to compensation from the settlement covering detainers issued from October 2010 to June 2014, mostly during a period when the sheriff’s department was headed by Lee Baca, now serving a three-year prison term for undermining a federal investigation into the department. “For years, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the largest law enforcement agency in the United States, callously denied immigrants constitutional protections that universally apply to all other jail detainees — unjustifiably holding them without cause as prisoners,” said Lindsay Battles, partner at

Kaye, McLane, Bednarski & Litt. “This settlement holds the sheriff’s department accountable for thousands of unlawful incarcerations and provides a measure of compensation to every person injured by their unconstitutional policies.” Under terms of the settlement each class member is eligible to receive from $250 up to $25,000, based on how long they were held and other circumstances. Surplus funds, if any after class members are paid, will go to programs that provide legal representation to persons facing immigration consequences because of an arrest or conviction. “For the past four years, ICE and the Trump administration have coerced, threatened, and defamed so-called sanctuary cities for declining to honor ICE’s illegal immigration detainers,” said Mark Fleming, associate director of litigation for the NIJC. “This settlement is a stark reminder to all law enforcement officials that cooperation with ICE’s illegal tactics risks profound financial liability to the communities they are sworn to serve.” There are three categories of class members in the settlement: · Fourth Amendment Class: Immigrants detained by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department beyond the time they were due for release from criminal custody solely on the basis of ICE detainers. · Equal Protection Class: Immigrants who were detained even through their money bail was low enough that they would have otherwise been released. · No-Bail Class: Immigrants who were not granted bail because of an ICE hold. “This settlement will likely contribute to a growing trend where local jurisdictions are taking appropriate steps to kick ICE out of their prisons, jails, and courthouses, said Chris Newman, legal director at NDLON. “There is already an emerging consensus that ICE is a rogue law enforcement agency, a menace to public safety, and a serial civil rights violator, and it is now clear that its coercive practices expose local governments to financial liability as well.”

CDC Shows White Men Least Likely to Wash Hands by Dr. Maya Johnston-Stone

Americans are washing their hands much more than they did before the coronavirus pandemic, according to new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but there’s still one group who is least likely to adhere to that guidance that washing hands helps protect us from the virus: young white men. Long before the general

public knew anything about what COVID was or how long it was going to stay, public health authorities advised Americans to wash their hands. Many of us can even remember growing up that teachers, doctors and health officials alike all encouraged us to wash our hands frequently. The CDC and other agencies continued on page 7

ENTERTAINMENT/LIFESTYLE/RELIGION

Los Angeles Sentinel and Bakewell Media’s Annual Taste of Soul Goes Virtual NNPA NEWSWIRE — “When we started, it was all about making sure that we did something in our community for our community. We always believed in our community, and if you give us a quality event, the community will embrace it. It’s remarkable the way the community has responded. Taste of Soul has entertainment, commerce, good public relations, good imagery. It has all of those things and, of course, magnificent food, which is the fundamental foundation of what we’re doing.”

"We'd love to take Taste of Soul national, but it takes a lot of money, hard work, and sponsors," Bakewell said. "We could bring Taste of Soul near you tomorrow with enough sponsors. Thanks to the NNPA publishers throughout the country because many people know about Taste of Soul because of the Black Press, which again amplifies the Black Press's importance.” By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia While a festival with 350,000 people on Crenshaw Boulevard isn’t in the cards because of the coronavirus pandemic, Bakewell Media and the Los Angeles Sentinel have found a new way to bring even more people together. The 15th annual Taste of Soul, the largest one-day street festival in Southern California, will take place virtually on Saturday, Oct. 17. The annual event, which begins at 6 p.m. PST., routinely draws well over a quarter of a million people on the third Saturday in October. Peak attendance has been about 350,000. The event features local and international cuisine and merchandise from vendors, live entertainment on at least four stages, and various organizations’ information. The Taste of Soul stands out as a community event that highlights the region’s Black cultural experience fused with diverse cultures and traditions. “It’s our Essence Festival,” pronounced Pamela Bakewell, the executive vice president and COO of The Bakewell Company. “It’s become a national treasure and, locally, it’s one of the biggest things that happens each year. The Black community has a lot of pride in Taste of Soul, and people come from everywhere, and many plan their family reunions around the event.” Danny Bakewell, Sr., the

chairman and CEO of The Bakewell Company and Publisher Emeritus of the Los Angeles Sentinel, noted that Hyundai played a large role in making the virtual event possible this year. “We couldn’t do it without them,” Bakewell, Sr., declared about the partnership with Hyundai. “They believe so much in Taste of Soul, and they wanted to make sure it would live even though the circumstances with the pandemic wouldn’t allow us to have an on-the-ground event.” When initially conceiving of the event, Bakewell added that he never thought it would become such a global sensation that attracts superstars as much as it does neighbors. This year’s lineup of performers includes: Host Kym Whitley and features Anthony Hamilton, Doug E. Fresh, After 7, En Vogue, Montell Jordan, Fred Hammond, Jade Novah, and Deborah Joy Winans. Celebrities scheduled to appear include Wendy Raquel Robinson, Loni Love, Kim Fields, Faithe C. Herman, Lamman Rucker, Dr. Bobby Jones, and Darrin DeWitt Henson. DJ Mal-Ski will provide the music for Taste of Soul, which Bakewell Media will live stream at www.TasteofSoul.org. “I had a vision, but Taste of Soul has outlasted and become bigger than I ever dreamed,” Dan ny Bakewell stated.

“T his belongs to the community, and the nation has allowed Taste of Soul to multiple. It has all the ingredients we talk about in terms of being good and wholesome for our community.” Ba kewell cont i nued: “When we started, it was all about making sure that we did something in our community for our community. We always believed in our community, and if you give us a quality event, the community will embrace it. It’s remarkable the way the community has responded. Taste of Soul has entertainment, commerce, good public relations, good imagery. It has all of those things and, of course, magnificent food, which is the fundamental foundation of what we’re doing.” The food at Taste of Soul comes from individuals who work in socalled greasy spoons and holein-the-walls, Bakewell added. “That’s how some people refer to them,” he demurred. “We call them our neighborhood chefs.” Most of all, Bakewell was emphatic that Taste of Soul is proof of what the Black Press of America and African Americans as a whole can accomplish by showing confidence in and relying on each other. “When we first started, the basic take was that we couldn’t do this, that there would be gang violence and people won’t respond,” Bakewell recalled. “These are our children, our

grandchildren, our nieces, and nephews in our community. They come with their mothers and fathers and cousins, and we know how to behave, and our parents know how to make us behave. We’ve never had an incident, and that speaks volumes to how other people view us. It’s a wonderful thing for us to come out of our houses and find something of a quality nature in our own community.” Bakewell encouraged the Black Press members to support Taste of Soul, crediting the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) with much of its success. “We’d love to take Taste of Soul national, but it takes a lot of money, hard work, and sponsors,” Bakewell said. “We could bring Taste of Soul near you tomorrow with enough sponsors. Thanks to the NNPA publishers throughout the country because many people know about Taste of Soul because of the Black Press, which again amplifies the Black Press’s importance. “I am so grateful to my brothers and sister publishers and to [NNPA President and CEO] Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. I thank him for the remarkable job and leadership he’s providing the NNPA. “He is a tireless worker and always has been a brother who is on the frontlines. He takes time and knows about Taste of Soul and recognizes its value. I take my hat off to him and all of our publishers.”

“You Know What They Say….You Can Lead A Horse to Water, But You Can’t Make Him Drink!” By: Lou Yeboah

Lou Yeboah

Now most, “Americans” know what that means. On a theological level, the phrase can be translated as, “You can lead someone to God’s Truth, but you can’t make that person embrace and live according to those principles and values.” You can show someone something that will benefit them, but you can’t force them to accept it. People, like horses, will do as they will. The problem with that is, as a

good English Proverb says, “He that neglects the occasion, the occasion will neglect him.” Case in point. Jesus says, “Because you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock you when calamity overtakes you— when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. “Then you will call to Me, but I will not answer; you will look for Me, but you will not find Me [Proverbs 1:24-28]. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed

two evils: they have forsaken Me, the Fountain of Living Water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. [Jeremiah 2:12-13]. You know, as I thought on this text, it reminded me of where I was when the Lord found me. Just like the Samaritan woman in the Book of John chapter 4, I was looking for something I did not have. I was drinking from every well I could find, but none were satisfying the thirst in my soul. When I met Jesus Christ, and He offered me a drink from His well, I found out that there was more than water in His well. What did He offer? He offered satisfaction and salvation for my soul. He offered me the opportunity to have all my sins forgiven. He offered me the opportunity to be right with God.

He offered me the opportunity to miss Hell and go to Heaven when I die. What was the catch? There was no catch! All He requires from me and you, is everything! [John 7:37-38]. He wants you to come before Him, confessing yourself a sinner and calling on Him by faith. He wants you to take His death on the cross as the payment for your sins. He wants you to believe what the Bible says about Him and He wants you to accept it all on the basis of faith, [Romans 10:9]. If you are saved, let the Lord remind you how good He has been to you in redeeming your soul. If you are lost, answer Him as He calls you to come to Him and drink of His well,

continued in next 2 columns

“You Know What They Say….You Can Lead A Horse to Water, But You Can’t Make Him Drink!”...continued because every human effort of quenching your thirst apart from God will not bring satisfaction. I admonish you, quench your thirst by drinking from the Fountain of Living Water. Understanding that Grace is God’s unmerited favor and it goes beyond mercy. Mercy is God not giving us the punishment that we deserve for our sins. Don’t hesitate to drink from the Fountain of Living Water, because when men have gone beyond the time of Gods mercies, and out-rowed the tide of Gods forbearance, and will not return, the Lord sets it down with Himself, that His wrath shall return upon them. He will no longer forbear: as [Hosea 9:15] reminds us, “There was a time wherein God did pitied them, but now He will not pitied them any more; twenty five years He called unto them and sought to bring them home; but because they stood out and refused, the Lord saith, I will love Ephraim no more.” The Spirit is inviting you.

Jesus is inviting you. There is a river of Living Water flowing all around you, that will quench your deepest thirsts and desires. There’s a satisfaction beyond anything words can describe. All you have to do is drink of the Living Water. It will change your life forever! We wasn’t meant to live our lives with dehydrated hearts– recognize your need for the Living Water, Jesus Christ. As the Coca-Cola slogan says, “Obey your thirst,” and saturate yourself with water that lasts– water that only Jesus can supply. Wisdom crieth without, she uttereth her voice in the streets. going up and down the City from street to street, and from door to door, crying his commodity, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. [John 7:37-52]. “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” [Revelation 22:17].

I think CNN’s Jake Tapper’s description of the Presidential basically debate sums up 2020 for me: “a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck.” Many of us have been whiteknuckling daily life throughout this pandemic, and somehow the news keeps getting worse. These days, I am looking for some signs of hope. Some light at the end of the tunnel. A word of comfort in these trying times. Growing up as a PK (preacher’s kid) in the Anglican Catholic tradition, the rote prayers of the liturgy remain a comfort to me. These words are deeply engrained in my memory, though not all of them reflect my theology now. Some words keep coming back to me in this season, especially the benediction and how my father said it, always the same words, always the same cadence, “The Peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God.” As a child, honestly, I liked those words most because they symbolized that church was almost over. But in years since, I have taken comfort in their repetition and mystical meaning, pointing to the assurance that God’s peace is promised even as it is beyond our comprehension. In the chaos of 2020, that reminder of God’s peace, even a peace beyond our understanding, is reassuring to me. In the United Church of Christ, we prefer liturgies that are inclusive, creative, and change with the season. We also have worked to unravel the mystery of what makes for peace. Peace is a promise, but, for us, peace is also a practice. Our Just Peace pronouncement in 1985 affirmed “Peace is possible!” not only based on God’s faithfulness but also on our willingness to work at being a justiceseeking, peace-building church.

How is God’s peace a promise for you? I encourage you to reflect on prayers, hymns, or words that may bring you comfort or assurance of God’s faithfulness, God’s peace that is “beyond our understanding” in this season. And further, how is God’s peace a practice for you? I challenge you to not only keep up your engagement with the Our Faith Our Vote Campaign, but also consider how you and your church might respond in any postelection scenario to be a resource for peace, justice, resistance, and reconciliation if needed. Over the next month, we may be stretched to live out our Just Peace commitment in new ways. If there is election tampering or the outcome is contested, we could face massive unrest and potentially violence. Our churches may be called to accompany nonviolent protest, to become a resource in the community, or, in some cases, to deescalate violence directly. Now is an important time to plan for how you and your church might respond along with other community institutions should these previously unthinkable scenarios play out. Trainings and articles are being circulated by many local and national peace organizations a nd fait h orga n i zat ions that you can find online. Sometimes the memories of childhood prayers or learned scriptures can lift us up when our own voices waiver. They remind us of who we are. They remind us that we are carried into the future by the prayers of those faithful ones. We are God’s promises lived out for them. We can trust, work and hope for the promise of God’s peace still to come. God’s peace as a promise. God’s peace as a practice. May the peace that passes all understanding be yours today, and grant us all the courage to keep building it.

CDC Shows White Men Least Likely to Wash Hands...continued from page 4 also offered detailed seminars on how to do so properly. Still, handwashing is considered an essential aspect of good hygiene, whether during a pandemic or not. This news shouldn’t be surprising since some white men have been vocal, including President Trump, about their resistance to mask-wearing. When the pandemic first arrived in the United States early in 2020, it quickly became clear that many Americans were simply not washing their hands regularly. Comments on social media spread like wildfire about those they observed in public restrooms who didn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. And even those who were washing their hands often, weren’t doing it properly. According to the CDC, fewer than three-quarters of Americans are washing their hands after coughing or sneezing, or in situations where they handle food. What will it take for more people, including this group of young white men to wash their hands more frequently? After all, over 200,000 people have already died from this disease that they say can be prevented if we do the three things they recommended: washing hands frequently, wearing a mask, and keeping your distance when needed. “Because older adults, Black persons, and Hispanic persons have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, engagement in preventive behaviors by these persons is particularly important,” reports the CDC.

“Public health efforts should promote frequent handwashing for all, with attention to tailoring messaging to men, young adults, and non-Hispanic White adults,” encourages the CDC. “Particular focus should be placed on encouraging handwashing at important times such as before eating and after experiencing r e s pi r a t o r y s y m p t o m s .” S o h ow a r e p e o ple washing their hands wrong? The CDC recommends t he se fou r st e ps (t hat many are getting wrong): 1.) Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. Why? Because hands could become recontaminated if placed in a basin of standing water that has been contaminated through previous use, clean running water should not be a factor. In recent tests, it does not appear to affect microbe removal. However, washing with nonpotable water when necessary may still improve health. Please note, the warmer water may cause more skin irritation and is more environmentally costly. Turning off the faucet after wetting hands saves water, and there are few data to prove whether significant numbers of germs are transferred between hands and the faucet. 2.) Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your

fingers, and under your nails. Why? Lathering and scrubbing hands creates friction, which helps lift dirt, grease, and microbes from skin. Microbes are present on all surfaces of the hand, often in particularly high concentrations under the nails, so the entire hand should be scrubbed. 3.) Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Why? Soap and friction help lift dirt, grease, and microbes— including disease-causing germs—from skin so they can then be rinsed off of hands. Rinsing the soap away also minimizes skin irritation 15. Because hands could become recontaminated if rinsed in a basin of standing water that has been contaminated through previous use, clean running water should be used. 4.) Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Why? Germs can be transferred more easily to and from wet hands; therefore, hands should be dried after washing. However, the best way to dry hands remains unclear because few studies about hand drying exist, and the results of these studies conflict. Additionally, most of these studies compare overall concentrations of microbes, not just diseasecausing germs, on hands following different hand-drying methods. It has not been shown that removing microbes from hands is linked to better health. Nonetheless, studies suggest that using a clean towel or air drying hands is best.

Riverside County remains in red tier for another week as officials seek more time to improve data Local News

Riverside County is being allowed to remain in the red tier for at least week after local officials requested more time to improve the metrics and avoid moving back to the most restrictive tier. State officials on Tuesday announced that Riverside County would stay in the red tier during the “adjudication process” and see whether the county can reduce its case rate – cases per 100,000 people – and meet the metrics to remain in the red tier. Riverside County officials requested the delay as the county’s metrics showed an increase in case and positivity rates that could push it into the more restrictive purple tier. “The aim with the adjudication process is to make the case to the state that we can maintain our current status and still control COVID-19 in our communities,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County public health officer. “Whether or not we stay red or return to purple, we have to get people tested to find cases, and continue to use facial coverings, social

distance and avoid gatherings. If we return to purple, we want to get back to red as quickly as we can. If we stay red, we want to progress. We can’t do either of those things without individuals, businesses and institutions working together to reduce spread.” Late last month, Riverside County moved from purple to red tier because it met the criteria for positivity and case rates. Counties are placed within the red tier because of their daily case rate (must be lower than seven new cases per 100,000 population) and positivity rate (lower than eight percent). The state adjusts the case rate higher for counties that are not meeting the state’s daily average testing volume, which brought Riverside County’s case rate above seven per 100,000 last week. “We appreciate the California Department of Public Health for working with Riverside County and granting us this one-week extension in order to make progress on our metrics,” said Riverside County Board Chair and Fourth District Supervisor

Riverside County officials say the return to purple will adversely impact small businesses like restaurants and gyms which were able to provide indoor services after previously being restricted to only outdoor activities in the more restrictive tier.

Protect App-Based Work for California’s Black and Brown Communities at a Critical Time

Four million Californians are out of work. But hundreds of thousands have been able to make ends meet by driving with app-based platforms, delivering food, groceries, prescriptions and other essential supplies. Large numbers of Black families in California count on the income and flexible schedules that this independent app-based work provides.

V. Manuel Perez. “According to Dr. Christopher Thornberg of the UCR School of Business, the hospitality sector including hotels and restaurants and the retail/service sector such as gas stations, clothing stores and personal care have been the hardest hit as a result of this pandemic. Many people have been laid off, lost their jobs or have had to close their businesses, especially in Riverside County. I ask that we all do our part and continue to adhere to safety precautions in our homes and while out in public. Please wear a mask, social distance and be careful. Let’s not go back a tier and prevent it by also taking the time to test, even without symptoms. Together, we can beat the pandemic and get people back to work.”

NATIONAL NEWS

State Officials Announce Latest COVID-19 Facts National News SACR AMENTO – The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) today announced the most recent statistics on COVID -19. Califor nia has 852,406 confirmed cases to date. Numbers may not represent true dayover-day change as reporting of test results can be delayed. There were 2,378 newly recorded confirmed cases Monday. Numbers do not represent true day-over-day change as these results include cases from prior to yesterday. T he 7- d ay p o sit iv it y rate is 2.7% and the 14day positivity rate is 2.6%. There have been 16,333,717 tests conducted in California. This represents an increase of 142,376 over the prior 24-hour reporting period. As case numbers continue to rise in California, the total number of individuals who will have serious outcomes will also increase. There have been 16,581 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Testing Turnaround Time The testing turnaround dashboard reports how long California patients are waiting for COVID-19 test results. California has worked to reduce testing turnaround times in recent weeks to help curb the spread of the virus. During the week of September

27 to October 3, the average time patients waited for test results was 1.2 days. During this same time period, 69 percent of patients received test results in 1 day and 92 percent received them within two days. The testing turnaround time dashboard is updated weekly. As of September 22, 2020, California’s testing capacity and turnaround time have improved. As a result and until further notice, all four tiers in the Testing Prioritization Guidance originally dated July 14, 2020, will have equal priority for testing.

Blueprint for a Safer Economy Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled the Blueprint for a Safer Economy, a statewide plan for reducing COVID-19 and keeping Californians healthy and safe. The plan imposes riskbased criteria on tightening and loosening COVID-19 allowable activities and expands the length of time between changes to assess how any movement affects the trajectory of the disease. Parents should be aware of the signs and symptoms of MIS-C including fever that does not go away, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes or feeling tired. Contact your child’s doctor immediately if your child has these symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment of patients is critical to preventing long-ter m complications. Racial Demographics – A More Complete Picture The California Department of Public Health is committed to health equity and collecting more detailed racial and ethnic data that will provide additional understanding for determining future action. Health outcomes are affected by forces including structural racism, poverty and the disproportionate prevalence of underlying conditions such as asthma and heart disease among Latinos and African American Californians. Only by looking at the full picture can we understand how to ensure the best outcomes for all Californians. The differences in health outcomes related to COVID-19 are most stark in COVID-19 deaths. We have nearly complete data on race and ethnicity for COVID-19 deaths, and we are seeing the following trends: Latinos, African Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders

are dying at disproportionately higher levels. More males are dying from COVID-19 than females, in line with national trends. More information is available at COVID-19 Race and Ethnicity Data. Your Actions Save Lives Every person has a role to play. Protecting yourself and your family comes down to common sense: Staying home except for essential needs/activities following local and state public health guidelines when patronizing approved businesses. To the extent that such sectors are re-opened, Californians may leave their homes to work at, patronize, or otherwise engage with those businesses, establishments or activities. Practicing social distancing. Wear ing a cloth face mask when out in public. Washing hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds. Avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Covering a cough or sneeze with your sleeve, or disposable tissue. Wash your hands afterward. Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
