As Democrats wrapped their four-day national convention filled with hope and promise for the future of America, many might well harken back to day three and determine it as the turning point of the 2020 election season. That might indeed be the case if Joe Biden wins election as the 46th president of the United States. Biden closed out the fourth and final day of the virtual convention by promising stronger leadership, civil and equal rights for all, and to bring a divided country back together with a platform that certainly promotes the reasonable and humane belief that Black lives matter. “All elections are important. We know in our bones this is more consequential. This is a lifechanging election,” Biden stated. “We can and will overcome this season of darkness. I will be an ally of the light, not the darkness,” Biden declared from his home state of Delaware, as he formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination. “It is with great honor and humility that I accept this nomination for President of the United States of America.” Biden’s speech punctuated a night filled with passionate pleas for Americans to vote their conscious. The fourth night included speeches from actress Julia Luis Dreyfuss, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and others. It also included a special performance by singer John Legend and hip-hop star and actor Common. While Biden appeared to get his message across on the final night of the convention, it was his choice for vice president, and the nation’s 44th president on day three that

may have made it difficult even for reasonable Republican voters to cast a ballot for President Donald Trump. On day three, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) became the first Black and South Asian woman to officially accept the nomination as vice president from either of the two major political parties. After being introduced by her sister, Maya Harris, her niece Meena Harris and stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, the California senator, stated her impressive resume and attacked Trump. “I’ve fought for children and survivors of sexual assault. I’ve fought against transnational gangs. I took on the biggest banks and helped take down one of the biggest for-profit colleges. I know a predator when I see one,” she said in a reference to accusations some women have previously made against Trump. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump’s rallying cry was “lock her up,” claiming that the then-Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton was a criminal. Harris turned the tables this time. “I am eager to prosecute him,” Harris stated, adding that the president has failed America and has divided the country with racist and sexist rhetoric. While Clinton also addressed the convention as did her husband and former President Bill Clinton, another ex-commander-in-chief stole the night. Barack Obama broke with the long-standing but unwritten tradition of a former president criticizing one currently in office. Speaking live from the Museum of the American Revolution in

Philadelphia and in front of a display about the writing of the U.S. Constitution, Obama took direct aim at Trump. “The one Constitutional office elected by all of the people is the presidency. So, at a minimum, we should expect a president to feel a sense of responsibility for the safety and welfare of all 330 million of us – regardless of what we look like, how we worship, who we love, how much money we have – or who we voted for,” Obama declared. “But we should also expect a president to be the custodian of this democracy. We should expect that regardless of ego, ambition, or political beliefs, the president will preserve, protect, and defend the freedoms and ideals that so many Americans marched for and went to jail for; fought for and died for.” In his continued evisceration of Trump, Obama noted that he’s sat in the Oval Office with both of the men who are running for president – the current president and Biden, Obama’s former vice president. “I never expected that my successor would embrace my vision or continue my policies. I did hope, for the sake of our country, that Donald Trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously, that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care,” Obama said. He continued: “But he never did. For close to four years now, he’s shown no interest in putting in the work; no interest in finding common ground; no interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his

friends; no interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves. “Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t. And the consequences of that failure are severe. 170,000 Americans dead. Millions of jobs gone while those at the top take in more than ever. Our worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished, and our democratic institutions threatened like never before.” Obama echoed his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, who opened the convention two days earlier with a passionate plea for voters to cast their ballot for Biden. “Now, I know that in times as polarized as these, most of you have already made up your mind. But maybe you’re still not sure which candidate you’ll vote for – or whether you’ll vote at all,” Obama stated. “Maybe you’re tired of the direction we’re headed, but you can’t see a better path yet, or you just don’t know enough about the person who wants to lead us there. “So, let me tell you about my friend Joe Biden.” After spending several minutes expounding the virtues of Biden and Harris, Obama closed by noting that “we have to get busy … by pouring all our efforts into these 76 days, and by voting like never before – for Joe and Kamala, and candidates up and down the ticket, so that we leave no doubt about what this country we love stands for – today and for all our days to come.”

Before I belong to a race, party, or gender, I belong to God. I believe that we're all made in the image of God. As a follower of Jesus, I'm committed to the greatest of his commandments: to love the Lord my God with all thy heart soul and mind, and to love my neighbor. America has long suffered from the sin of racism. Race is a social construct that was designed to create powerlessness, division, and fear amongst those who had been enslaved and deemed soulless. Today, as the election approaches, we stand at what I hope will be a key turning point in history. In the midst of the terrible division, sickness, fear, and grief we have experienced in recent months, we have a real chance to unite all America's people in the causes of civility, healing, hope, and justice. To do this, we must remove Trump from office. On Wednesday, August 19, Kamala Harris, an Americanborn, Jamaican-Indian United States Senator, became the first woman of color to be the vicepresidential nominee to a major US political party. As we celebrate this important moment, let us also rejoice in the myriad things that make us all so different and yet all so alike, all so unique, and yet all God's children. Although 60.3% of Americans are white, and 52.9% of them are women, no white woman has ever been President. However, it is now crucial that white women are galvanized to vote overwhelmingly for a male Democrat to take that office and perhaps pass the mantle on to a Black woman (in what would be another historic first). I believe that, as running mates, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris embody the unity and solidarity we all long for. Women understand perhaps more than anyone our country's need for togetherness right now. But we have to ensure that all women feel part of our movement, and that must include white women.

I am a Black man for whom many pivotal moments in life have come through white women believing in me. Marie Bennett hired me, in spite of my dyslexia, to work on a project of federal significance. Caroline Cracraft, whom I adore as my British Mum, is the reason why I have a life in the United Kingdom. It was a 'Karen' who gave me courage to soar beyond where I was eight years ago and to flourish, fulfilling what I thought at the time were unrealistic expectations. My first "granddaughter", Eleanor Irene, was born on 07/07/2020. She happens to be white. She's the daughter of my Jordan, who came to work for me as an intern in 2009. Jordan had lost both of her parents and was navigating her life as a beautiful soul without them. Ever since, I have loved her, and her growing family, as my own, because that is what they are. I want our Democratic party to reflect all their hopes, needs, and aspirations, just as it must those of their Black sisters and friends. I am so grateful to the white women who did and do understand the call of justice and equality within their hearts and souls. Many have stood beside us in the fight for equal rights, including Juliette Morgan and NAACP founders Mary White Ovington and Florence Kelly. Countless white women played an active role in recent anti-racism demonstrations, not just in the US, but all over the world. They give me hope. But I am also afraid. We are at a daunting place. Our opponents may outnumber us in some of the states we need to carry, and they may well not play fair. I am worried for the America that our ancestors died to build, where our parents endured so much for us to have fairer opportunities and where is so much still to overcome. Gavin Newsom vowed there will be “no politics in this space” as he thanked the Trump administration for emergency assistance. With 560 fires raging across California, Gov. Gavin Newsom worked today to put out some fires of his own, thanking the Trump Administration for emergency assistance and vowing that there will be “no politics in this space.” Newsom — a Democrat who campaigned as a fierce critic of Republican President Donald Trump, but has taken a more conciliatory tone during the coronavirus pandemic — spoke at a Cal Fire briefing in Napa County, a day after both men lobbed seemingly partisan attacks amid the crisis. Trump on Thurday threatened to withhold federal aid from California, saying the state was suffering fires because it hadn’t followed the president’s advice to thin trees and clean debris from forest floors. Newsom clapped back that night during a brief video appearance at the Democratic National Convention. “The reason I pushed back was I thought it was important, because

I don’t want to have people strewn with some anxiety that somehow the President may pull funding,” Newsom said today. “He may make statements publicly, but the working relationship privately has been a very effective one.” Many of the fires now burning across the state were sparked by the recent lightning storm across Northern California, Newsom said. The LNU Complex fire in the wine country area and the CZU Complex fire in the Santa Cruz mountains have quickly become two of the 20 largest fires in California history, he said, already burning an area as large as Rhode Island and killing four people. More than 12,000 firefighters are working to suppress them, Newsom said, but the twin blazes “are stretching our resources, stressing our personnel.” Newsom said today he has developed a strong personal relationship with Trump and characterized the president’s animosity toward California as more show than substance. “There’s not one phone call that I have made to the President, where he hasn’t quickly responded,” Newsom said. “And in almost every instance, he’s responded

ACLU Statement on Police Shooting of Jacob Blake Community/Education News NEW YORK — Late Sunday afternoon in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jacob Blake was the victim of another disgusting act of police brutality. Within full view of his three children seated in the backseat, Blake was shot seven times in the back while walking away from police officers and opening his car door. Jeffery Robinson, director of the ACLU’s Trone Center for Justice and Equality, highlights the implications of yet another egregious act of police violence committed against a Black person in the following statement: “In yet another vicious act of police violence caught on camera, the Kenosha Police Department attempted to murder a Black man as he walked away from them by shooting him in the back, in front of his three children and his entire community. With each of the seven shots fired, police made their intent clear — they believed they had the right to kill an unarmed Black man for the crime of walking away from them. “The Kenosha Police statement after the shooting said that they provided ‘immediate aid’ after committing this act of violence. But rendering first aid is a basic obligation. Officers shot Jacob

Blake seven times in the back; it’s offensive to act as if not letting him bleed out afterward was an act of grace rather than a mandatory response to their own violence. “The reasons that led to this shooting can’t be changed with more money thrown at police departments to find ways not to murder the members of the communities that they are supposed to be serving. The fact that incidents of police violence like this, the murder of Breonna Taylor as she slept in her home, the murder of George Floyd across the street from a grocery store, the murder of Eric Garner outside of a neighborhood bodega and countless others have become commonplace shows that the very institution of American policing is rotten at its core. “Unfortunately, disgusting acts of police brutality like this will be commonplace so long as police continue to act as an occupying force in Black communities. It should now be clear to elected officials across the country that the only way to end the scourge of police violence is to immediately divest from a policing institution that, from its inception, has been used to oppress Black people, and continued in next 2 columns

favorably in terms of addressing the emergency needs of the state,” related to both the pandemic and wildfires. “He may make statements publicly, but the working relationship privately has been a very effective one.” In par ticular, Newsom highlighted a new agreement between California and the federal government to increase vegetation management on U.S. Forest Service land in the state, calling it “an unprecedented amount of resources to address the concern that (Trump) highlighted.” Though forest management is often cast as a partisan issue — with Republicans favoring tree thinning, and Democrats valuing environmental preservation — state and federal officials have found common ground with a plan to reduce wildfire risks, protect habitat and help California meet its climate goals. Their agreement calls on the state and federal governments to work together to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire by thinning a million acres a year, developing a shared 20-year plan for forest health, expanding the use of prescribed burns, and improving timber harvesting, according to

information Newsom’s office released last week. “Since the federal government owns nearly 58 percent of California’s 33 million acres of forestlands, while the state owns 3 percent, joint statefederal management is crucial to California’s overall forest health and wildfire resilience,” the governor’s office wrote in a press release. It cites “unnaturally dense forests, a century of fire suppression and climate change resulting in warmer, hotter and drier conditions” as reasons California has become so flammable. As firefighters struggled to contain the blazes, several other states have sent fire engines or planes to help. Engines from Arizona, Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada and Idaho have already arrived, according to a spokesman for the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, while engines from Washington, Utah, Texas and Montana are on the way. “Those states are also dealing with their own domestic challenges within their states related to the heat wave, and yet they’re still offering support,” Newsom said, thanking fellow governors.

However, a growing number of organizations led by Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) believe a ban would further endanger Black lives because it could potentially increase interaction with the police. Many within the African American com munit y have voiced concern over California’s Senate Bill 793. This measure would ban menthol products, but critics said it would probably increase racial profiling by law enforcement, based on statistics suggesting that menthol cigarettes are overwhelmingly preferred by African Americans who cho s e t o s moke. “Whether it is real or perceived, there is a distrust of local police,” said Commissioner Jiles Shipp, the president of NOBLE. “The ban will have a counter effect and further damage community-police relations.” Shipp recommends that

communities concerned about smoking continue to use education, limited smoke-free areas, and tobacco cessation campaigns, all of which he said has drastically decreased smoking rates over the past few decades. Major Neill Franklin, executive director of LEAP, noted that if convenience stores and gas stations are prevented from selling menthol, most people will purchase the cigarettes from neighboring jurisdictions and sell them in the prohibited area for a higher price. “We know that laws are enforced in a way that targets people of color. [Menthol bans] create more space for that to happen,” Major Franklin declared. “We know [these bans] will result in an illicit underground market of menthol cigarettes in the black community. State/Government News LYNCHBURG, Va. — A federal court today approved an agreement allowing mail ballots without a witness signature for the Nov. 3 general election for all Virginia voters who feel they cannot safely comply due to the pandemic. The action follows a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and ACLU of Virginia on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Virginia and several individuals. The cour t approved a similar partial settlement in May regarding the witness requirement for the June primary. “The court’s action preserves the right to vote throughout 2020 for Virginians who cannot risk their health to get a witness signature in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Davin Rosborough, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project. “This settlement protects Virginians who wish to vote in this critical election year.” Over a quarter of Virginians age 18 and over live by themselves, and almost a third of Virginians over 65 years of age — one of the groups most vulnerable to COVID-19 — live alone. The impact of this requirement would have fallen heavily on Virginians with disabilities and Black Virginians, who live alone in larger percentages than the population as a whole and who also are experiencing COVID-19 at disproportionate rates.

In the Christian Gospel there is an account of Jesus’ encounter with the evil one, during his time in the wilderness. The evil one mocked Jesus’ relationship with the Divine. He challenged Jesus stating that if he really is the son of God to throw himself off the cliff for God’s angels to save him. Jesus’ reply was quick, ““It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God

to the test.’” (Lk 4:12 NRSV) In short, Jesus’ did not have to prove his faith for the benefit of another. It is an important object lesson for us to remember that we possess the God given gift of common sense to live our lives. Yes, I believe God is with us in our journeys in life, however we are directed to bring no harm to ourselves or others. Wearing a mask is a sign of care for our humanity, a respect for life especially to our first responders and those risking their lives each every day to help those inflicted by this horrific disease. Wearing a mask is a symbol that we honor our elders and the most vulnerable among us. Wearing a mask is a demonstration how we show love for one another. To make wearing a mask a political or religious issue is just spiritual malpractice, akin to asking us to throw ourselves off a cliff to prove our faith in God. Friends, wearing a face mask saves lives. What greater good can we do for each other? When you see me wear a mask, I am saying “I see you. I value you. I care for you.”

His choice to occasionally reveal what will happen in the future, and when He does, like trumpeters on the castle wall, as someone chosen by God as a watchman, I must proclaim the full counsel of God, which includes both sovereign wrath and supreme love. So for those of you wondering why I’m always talking about repentance and destruction, I cannot pick and choose what it is that I must speak about. As a watchman, addressing the wrath of God is never optional —it is a divine mandate. God demands it! Why? Because an essential part of God’s moral perfection is His hatred of sin. Like I said before, always to me first and then to whomever may receive it. Listen, we are not living in ordinary times. We are nearing the end of an age. A worldshaking crisis is inexorably building and will, in the near future, explode the appearance of normalcy that still pervades. The progression of disturbing news stories that you may read about or hear about in the News, is not random and inconsequential. In fact, they foreshadow remarkable key trends and specific events that will change everything we are familiar with very soon! Open your eyes to understand the significance of today’s news and where it is all leading. For as the Apostle Peter wrote about Bible’s prophecies: “So we have seen and proved that what the prophets said came true. We will do well to pay close attention to everything they have written, for, like lights shining into dark corners, their words help us to understand many things that otherwise would be dark and difficult.… For no prophecy recorded in Scripture was ever thought up by the prophet himself. It was the Holy Spirit within these godly men who gave them true messages from God” [2 Peter 1:19–21]. I

That time will be the worst time of trouble this earth will ever experience [Matthew 24:21; Jeremiah 30:7; Mark 13 Luke 21; Ezekiel 36, and Daniel 12, and elsewhere. Therefore, Jesus commands us to watch and to be ready. “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” [Luke 21:36]. Our entire life is about to change. Soon, mankind will suffer through the most devastating, bloody war in human history—called, in biblical terminology, the “Great Tribulation.”[Matthew 24:21-22]. We are now approaching that time, and these things are now being revealed. [Daniel 12:10,]. If you consider yourself a follower of Jesus, then you should pay close attention to His instruction to you: “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” [Luke 21:36]. Here is what the prophet Jeremiah said about this same time: “Now these are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel [whose modern descendants include the United States, Great Britain and other nations of northwestern Europe] and Judah.… For thus saith the Lord: We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask now, and see, whether a man is ever in labor with child? So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins like a woman in labor, and all faces turned pale? Alas! For that day is great so that none is like it...” (Jeremiah 30:4–7). “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” [Matthew 24:30]. “For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” [Revelation 6:17] He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director NIAID 75% of Emerging Human Disease Originates in an Animal Host Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), delivered a special videotaped briefing and update on COVID-19 at the American Veterinarian Medical Association’s (AVMA) firstever virtual annual convention, August 20-22. Speaking to thousands of veterinarians, Dr. Fauci explained how approximately three quarters of all emerging infectious diseases in human health have their origins in animals. These zoonotic diseases include SARS, H1N1 flu, and, most recently, COVID-19. Dr. Fauci praised the industry for its ‘One Health’ approach in addressing the challenges posed by these emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases,

People who sign up through Covered California will have access to private health insurance plans with monthly premiums that may be lowered due to federal and new state financial help that became effective in 2020. After selecting a plan, their coverage would begin on the first day of the following month — meaning individuals losing job-based coverage would not face a gap in coverage. Medi-Cal Coverage Consumers who sign up through CoveredCA.com may find out that they are eligible for no-cost or lowcost coverage through Medi-Cal, which they can enroll in online. Those eligible for Medi-Cal can have coverage that is immediately effective. California has halted MediCal renewal reviews and discontinuances through the end of the public health emergency, ensuring that those already enrolled can continue their coverage. The decision will free up county resources to process new enrollments. The Department of Health Care Services also received expanded authority to expedite enrollment for seniors and other vulnerable populations through Hospital Presumptive Eligibility; expand the use of telehealth; and to provide COVID-19 testing, testing-related services and treatment to the uninsured, among

other steps to make it easier to access care. All Covered California and MediCal Plans Offer Telehealth Options All health plans available through Covered California and Medi-Cal provide telehealth options for enrollees, giving individuals the ability to connect with a health care professional by phone or video without having to personally visit a doctor’s office or howwwwwwwspital. All medically needed screening and testing for COVID-19 is free of charge. This includes telehealth or doctor’s office visits, as well as network emergency room or urgent care visits for the purpose of screening and testing for COVID-19. In addition, MediCal covers costs associated with COVID-19 in both its managed care plans and with fee-for-service providers. Covered California health plans will help cover costs that arise from any required treatment or hospitalization. New State Subsidies Help Californians Lower Their Health Care Costs Californians who sign up for coverage may be able to benefit from a new state subsidy program that expanded the amount of financial help available to many people. The subsidies are already benefiting about 625,000 Covered California consumers. Roughly 576,000 lower-income consumers, who earn between 200 and 400 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL), are receiving an average of $608 per month, per household in federal tax credits and new

state subsidies (which averages $23 per household). The financial help lowers the average household monthly premium from $881 to $272, a decrease of 70 percent. In addition, nearly 32,000 middle-income consumers have qualified for new state subsidies, with an average state subsidy to eligible households of $504 per month, lowering their monthly premium by nearly half. Many of those eligible for the new middle-income state subsidies are an estimated 280,000 Californians who are likely eligible for new state or existing federal subsidies but kept their “off-exchange” coverage. They are also eligible to switch to Covered California and benefit from the financial help. Staying Safe While Getting Help Enrolling Covered California is working with the more than 10,000 Certified Insurance Agents who help Californians sign up and understand their coverage options through phone-based service models. “Over the past several months, our staff and insurance agents across the state have been working to help thousands of people over the phone or through virtual meetings to help people get the coverage they need,” Lee said. “Health care coverage through Covered California of Medi-Cal can be just a phone call away.” Consumers can easily find out if they are eligible Medi-Cal or other forms of financial help and see which plans are available in their

Washington D.C. (Aug. 22, 2020)—On Monday, August 24, 2020, at 10:00 a.m., Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, will hold a hybrid hearing with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Postal Service Board of Governors Chairman Robert M. Duncan regarding changes at the postal service under Mr. DeJoy’s leadership. The hearing will examine operational and organizational changes at the Postal Service that have resulted in delivery delays across the country, including the delivery of critical medications, and the impact of

these changes on the rights of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the November elections. On August 18, 2020, Mr. DeJoy issued a statement suspending some of his recent changes, stating: “To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded.” However, he refused to reinstate the sorting machines, mailboxes, and other infrastructure he ordered removed. It is also unclear whether other possible changes—including how the Postal Service will prioritize election mail—will continue.

Chairwoman Maloney introduced the Delivering for America Act, which now has more than 200 cosponsors. This critical legislation provides $25 billion supported by the Board of Governors appointed by President Trump to help the Postal Service operate effectively through the coronavirus crisis and returns delivery standards to levels prior to the Postmaster General’s recent damaging changes.
