Homes are selling within days in many U.S. metros, and the day a home is listed can have an impact on time on market and sale price SEATTLE – In today’s competitive housing market, the time it takes to sell a home is measured in days, not weeks. Homes listed on a Thursday sell faster on average and are more likely to sell above list price than those listed on any other day of the week, a new Zillow® analysis reveals. And while this spring selling season may not look so different from the rest of the year as the pandemicfueled market has stayed red-hot through traditional slow periods, Zillow recommends listing your home before Labor Day based on historical market trends. Why the day of the week matters for home listings Homes listed on a Thursday typically go pending faster than any other day of the week, all else equal. Those that are put up for sale on a Sunday tend to sit on the market longest, eight days longer than Thursdays. Saturday and Monday are only marginally better — homes listed on either of those days typically take seven days longer to sell than homes listed on Thursdays.[1] Jeff Knipe, president of Knipe Realty in Portland, Ore., always recommends his clients list homes on a Wednesday or Thursday. “Home shoppers I work with tend to be most active on Thursday and Friday as they plan their weekend tour schedules. With the market as competitive as it is today, this timing strategy gives sellers the best chance at seeing multiple offers on their home, from my experience,” Knipe said. “Think of selling a home as if you’re going fishing; the goal is for the most possible fish to see your home as it enters the pond.” Thursday listings also are most
likely to sell for more money. Zillow’s research shows that homes listed on a Thursday are more likely to sell above their asking price than those listed on any other day of the week, while homes listed on either Saturday or Sunday were the least likely to sell above list. In today’s market where half of homes are selling within a week, a few days can make a difference. “A home sitting even for one week without a sale in this market can signal to buyers that they may be able to get a small discount,” Knipe adds. “A good strategy for buyers who want to avoid getting into a bidding war could be to target homes that have been on the market for a week or two, or even those listed over the weekend that are less likely to sell quickly.” Sellers may have caught on already — nationally, 21% of homes are listed on a Thursday, which is more than any other day of the week. The savviest sellers are in Seattle and Portland, Ore., where more than a third of homes are listed on a Thursday, the highest shares in the country among large markets. Only 13% of homes are listed on a weekend, which is less than any individual weekday.[2] Is

Spring is typically the best time of year to list your home for sale, at least in years before the pandemic-fueled housing boom, when buyers tend to come out of winter hibernation and hit the market in droves. Homes listed during the weeks of March 11 and 18 had the fastest sales of 2019. Labor Day is the traditional end to home shopping season, and a time when homes tend to sit on the market the longest

The worst time to list for those looking for an above-list sale in 2019 were the weeks of October 14 and 21, when homes were least likely to sell above their asking price. However, today’s housing market is anything but typical. Unrelenting buyer demand has pushed homes to sell at a breakneck pace even through what are typically slower months. Homes typically take a few days longer to sell in the winter than at the height of the spring selling season, but that pattern was reversed last year. The market has picked up the pace even more since then, and the share of sales happening above list price is more than double what it was pre-pandemic. “The housing market has had its foot on the gas since last summer, never entering its usual winter hibernation,” said Zillow Group economist Nancy Wu. “It remains an open question whether 2021 will bring a return to normalcy in that sense, but it’s likely that seasonality in the housing market will remain in some form, even if the changes from season to season are less dramatic than in the past.” In addition to steady demand and low inventory, the increased adoption of real estate technology likely has played a role in seasonal housing trends becoming less impactful. Buyers can more quickly narrow down their options rain or shine, freeing them from having to wait for the traditional weekend open house and potentially braving the elements to do so in the winter. HEALING AND HOPE BEYOND THE PANDEMIC PAIN

In almost every major wellness category, the AfricanAmerican community faces disproportionately negative impacts. What injures America, in general, devastates Black America in particular. Be it homeownership, violent interactions with law enforcement, or employment data, Black lives are consistently undervalued and disrespected. As the Pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church (FMBC) for more than a decade, with one of the largest Black congregations in the City of Vallejo, it has been a singular focus of ours to connect the historic liberating faith of our ancestors to the present-day well-being of our community. The crisis of COVID-19 has been the latest hit to an already ailing Black collective body. The number of positive diagnoses and deaths among our seniors has stolen a generation of wisdom that can no longer be passed to future generations. High hospitalization rates have derailed the economic health of many Black households. The closing of schools has impacted our youth in ways that will take
years for us to understand. Indeed, the pandemic has piled pain on top of already pain-ridden people. We are seeing a hesitancy from the Black community that is largely fueled by misand disinformation instead of science and facts. Reservations are understandable given the many ways our community has been mistreated by government institutions. But internet theories designed to distract and deceive cannot be allowed to divert us from the obligations we have to protect ourselves and those we love. With the advent of Black healthcare experts in every area of the system, the history of medical racism cannot impact us now as it did in the past. God can work through science and heal through the hands of health professionals. I do not believe in asking my congregation to do anything that I am not willing to do first. I say with great pride that my entire family is vaccinated and doing our part to protect each other and our community. My children and I chose to do so to protect my mother, their grandmother. I hear, listen, and understand the

community’s reservations. But I know firsthand, and can tell you with the utmost confidence, that the vaccines have been scientifically proven safe and effective, and they remain our best tools to end the pandemic. When our State sought advocates for Black health, FMBC responded by partnering with Solano County and The Governor's Office to provide life-saving access to COVID-19 vaccines. During our first vaccine clinic, we committed to offering 1,000 doses. The outreach was so well received that we distributed over 400 doses in the first few hours alone. We have since hosted an additional clinic, with the same results, and have scheduled to host more in the future. Why are we doing this at FMBC? We have witnessed the pain and devastation this has caused our community. God would not have been pleased with our inaction, from the mass outbreaks at convalescent centers and high schools, to the deaths of loved ones. The vaccines are proven safe, completely free to receive, and the best chance we have to
offer ourselves and those we love peace of mind, instead of the fear driven from this deadly virus. I urge you to get vaccinated and do your part to end the pandemic. Omnitrans’ Road to Zero Emissions Begins with New Electric Buses Community/ Education News (San Ber nardino, CA) Omnitrans introduced its first four 100 percent electricpowered buses into service last week, marking the start of a new era for a transit agency that has consistently focused on environmental sustainability. “Since we introduced the nation’s first hybrid-electric transit bus in 2002, Omnitrans has prioritized enhancing air quality in our region,” said CEO/General Manager Erin Rogers. “Operating our first zero-emissions vehicles is an exciting step toward meeting our state’s clean air goals.” The agency’s fleet of buses has operated on compressed natural gas for more than a decade, which produce .2 grams of ozone-producing nitrogen
oxide emissions (NOx) per brake horsepower hour (bhp). Currently, more than 50 percent of the fleet operate even cleaner near-zero emission engines, which produce .02 grams of NOx per bph - less than the average passenger vehicle! Omnitrans’ new electric buses, of course, produce 0 grams of NOx per bph. The new zero-emissions buses are being utilized throughout Omnitrans’ service area and have a range of approximately 150 miles; each takes about four hours to charge at one of Omnitrans’ two transit facilities. My kids are all college grads that make their own decisions and follow their own dreams. I only insisted that they learned how to read and write and how to count money. I didn’t totally rely on government, or private schools to educate them. Lucius always told his children the truth, about the important stuff, anyway. My children learned very early about racism and devilish beasts! Teach your children the truth yourself! If you want to, teach them about CRT. California Appeals Judge’s Decision to Outlaw State’s Ban on SBCUSD Class Of 2020 To Get The In-Person Commencement They Assault Weapons Deserve

Califor nia Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced last week that the state has appealed a federal court’s decision that declared California’s ban on assault weapons unconstitutional. Several state off icials, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed, also shared their disagreement with the court’s ruling during a press conference held at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. The state partnered with a number of gun control advocate groups for the event, including the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and the Giffords Law Center. “We can agree that the decision was disappointing,” said Bonta. “In many ways, the opinion was disturbing and troubling, and a big concern but we cannot be, and we are not, deterred by this,” he said. Federal Judge Roger Thomas Benitez presided over the decision in Miller v. Bonta. The case was heard at the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Bonta said his office has appealed the decision, requesting that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit leave the current laws in effect for 30 days. California’s gun laws are some of the strictest in the nation under the Roberti–Roos Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989 (AWCA) which bans the use of specific models of firearms classified as assault weapons. In the pending court case Miller v. Bonta, James Miller, a lawyer who
serves as a board member of the San Diego County Gun Owners, advocated for the use of the AR-15 rifle. However, the semiautomatic rifle with certain features is an illegal assault weapon according to California gun laws. Miller argued that AR-15 rifles can be used for self-defense under the second amendment. Miller, who also serves on the Cajon Valley School Board, initially challenged former Attorney General Xavier Becerra on California’s criminalization of AR-15 rifles in April this year. The ongoing case, which Attorney General Bonta inherited, sparked heated debates about gun laws in the wake of increasing gun violence and mass shootings. Breed recalled her personal experience with gun violence growing up in the Bay Area. “We're here at San Francisco General Hospital. I can't tell you how many times I've been here, after a friend that I grew up with was shot,” she said. Breed was joined by Mattie Scott who lost her son to gun violence. The mayor grew up with Scott’s son who was killed in 1996 at a graduation party in San Francisco. “We don't want to see another person, another child lost to gun violence in this city in this state in this country,” said Mayor Breed. “We’ve had a law on the books in the state for over 30 years, and a judge decides that our law is no longer constitutional. That law has saved countless numbers of lives,” she said. According to Statista Research Department, California had a total

Based on the federal court’s ruling, the semiautomatic machine gun is, “Good for both home and battle,” said Judge Benitez. “Like the Swiss Army Knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment,” the federal judge said in favor of Miller. Bonta disagreed with the federal judge’s reasoning to justify the court’s decision. “Equating assault weapons to Swiss Army knives, and false claims that COVID-19 vaccines have killed more people than mass shootings was shocking,” Although the murder of Scott’s son remains unsolved, she is an avid activist for social justice related to gun violence. “The judge who issued this decision is wrong,” said Scott. “It is insulting to read his decision when he called the kind of weapon that killed my son, akin to a pocketknife,” she said. “Pocket knives don't tear families apart. They don't shoot up schools, churches, movie theaters, and street corners,” she said in reference to the recent mass shootings across the country. Contrary Benitez’s belief that AR-15 rifles can be compared to pocket knives, trauma surgeon Dr. Andre Campbell said that the semiautomatic rifle is a lethal assault weapon designed for the battlefield. “An AR-15 is a weapon of mass destruction. It is used in the battlefield to kill the enemy, it’s a gun that is used in warfare and should not be available or used in the streets of the United States,” said Campbell. Campbell has treated many bullet wounds on the frontlines of trauma care for over two decades and has witnessed the
devastation a single bullet can cause to the human body. “It is as if a bomb went off in the tissues of patients,” said Campbell describing the impact of an AR-15 bullet in patients he’s treated over the years. The executive director of the Giffords Law Center Robyn Thomas said that the federal judge’s decision to give civilians access to militarygrade weapons sets California’s gun laws back by 32 years. “The decision is not based on the correct interpretation of the law,” said Thomas. “The comprehensive gun regulation which we have pioneered here in the state is protecting the lives of Californians. It is making us safer,” she said. In its budget for 2021-22, the state has allocated $200 million for the California Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Program. The investment was set up to prevent gun violence in high-risk communities statewide. “Folks that wax on about public safety, and they sit back passively and say nothing about this outrageous decision. Shame on them. What frauds,” said Newsom. The governor urged lawmakers to evaluate the absurdity of the court’s decision to justify the personal use of a rifle that is, “nothing more than a weapon of war,” he said. The governor said that gun control has always been a bipartisan issue that helped California lawmakers enact, “progressive and aggressive,” gun safety laws that regulated the people’s right to bear arms for over three decades. California’s ban on assault weapons remains in effect for 30 days as the attorney general appeals the court’s decision in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Time For Change Foundation Hosts Community Action Fair Gives $50,000 To Those In Need The event featured the sharing of food, Covid-19 supplies, and clothing to over five hundred members of our community. Local/Business News
Vendors from a variety of local organizations were on hand with groceries, hot meals, clothing, and Covid-19 supplies for anyone who came out. On Saturday, June 12th, Time for Change Foundation, and our community partners held a Community Action Fair. An opportunity to do our part, and help those in need, we gave away $100 dollar bills to the first two hundred and fifty people in line when a utility bill was provided. Additionally, $50 dollar Food for Less gift cards were handed out to over five hundred people. Together that is over $50,000 in aid to the community, with half being direct cash assistance. Vendors from a variety of local organizations were on hand with groceries, hot meals, clothing, and Covid-19 supplies
for anyone who came out. Since late August 2020, the Household Pulse Survey has provided data on the overall number of adults struggling to cover usual household expenses such as food, car payments, utilities, medical expenses, or student loans. Some 61 million adults—26 percent of all adults in the country—reported it was somewhat or very difficult for their household to cover usual expenses in the past seven days, according to data collected May 12–24. For many, this event was the rope needed to pull themselves up from a cliff. One attendee
expressed her gratitude for the event. "Especially right now... a lot of people are having hard times, so every little thing helps." Another, spoke on his observations and the importance of this event, "for those who are down on and out...with the pandemic, loss of wages, homelessness. There were a lot of kids here early with their parents, so things for some seem to dire." We wish to thank our partners in this event, Young Visionaries, Catholic Charities, and St. John’s Episcopal Church. They continue to outdo themselves in their efforts to service those in need.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA — Current Minnesota Vikings and former San Bernardino High running back Alexander Mattison will be teaming up with NFL Play 60 to host a Friday Night Lights football camp at San Bernardino High School. The NFL Play 60 camp will be held on Friday, July 2, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and is designed to educate, encourage, and empower youth grades 1st through 6th while learning proper skills and techniques from Alexander and other current NFL athletes. Red-Tagging the Gospel Derek Duncan In my neighborhood, several small public kiosks have been erected in recent years with names like “Little Free Pantry” or “Blessing Boxes.” One near me is shaped like a miniature, red house. People place books, food, or personal hygiene items in these cabinets to share, and take items as needed. The need has clearly increased this past year. Churches that install these kiosks are drawing on a long religious tradition of meeting the basic needs of their community. The ancient Hebrew practice of gleaning obliged farmers to leave a portion of their crops “for the poor and for the alien” (Leviticus 23:22). Many local churches support food pantries, Agape meal programs, and community gardens to address hunger and food insecurity in their community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, poverty and hunger have increased around the world. In the Philippines there has been a proliferation of free community pantries to help people make ends meet. Churches like the United Church of Christ in the Philippines ( UCCP) have suppor ted community pantries and delivered food aid to isolated families during these difficult times. The Government of the Philippines has been hostile to churches and community groups that serve the poor—even through food pantries. Authorities use a tactic called “red-tagging” to label activists and advocates for the poor as communists, in an attempt to justify legal action and violence against them. Ana Patricia Non started the Maginhawa Community Pantry in Quezon City, but had to suspend distribution after police showed up calling the organizers communists and taking names of donors and recipients. A spokesman of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict said Non was acting “like Satan” and admitted doing background checks on pantry organizers. “Red-tagging is no joke, especially during these times,” Non told the news outlet Inquirer, noting the risk that came with the allegation. An international review of human rights abuses in the
Philippines, called InvestigatePH, concluded red-tagging is used to suppress dissent and intimidate critics of President Duterte’s harsh policies. In a report to the UN Human Rights Council, InvestigatePH details numerous cases that illustrate how redtagging “provides cover, justification, and support to police and military operations to target and dismantle civil society organizations through intimidation, threats and harassing surveillance; raids and unjust arrests; enforced disappearances; and extrajudicial killings” (First Report, p. 36). One notable case concerns the HARAN Center of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) in Davao City, which has been a sanctuary for Lumad indigenous tribes whose land has been forcefully taken for mining and agri-business interests. When the UCCP drew international attention to the plight of the Lumad, the government in March accused the center of financing terrorism and teaching “communist ideals.” Other UCCP leaders have been red-tagged in an attempt to discredit the work of the UCCP with the poor. On Sunday, May 2, police arrested UCCP Pastor Daniel Balucio, an ecumenical disaster response coordinator in the Albay province. The senior pastor was charged was illegal possession of firearms and explosives. Claiming this is another case of planting evidence, legal defenders have demanded his release. In a Pastoral Statement on the Continuing Persecution and Harassment of Church Servants, UCCP leadership declared their commitment to “the mission imperative that the Church sides and journeys with the poor and the downtrodden, the way Lord Jesus Christ lived his lifetime and ministry.” Whether in little or big ways, the imperative for the Church to serve the poor is Gospel. Cal Unemployment System Backlogged With More Than 200,000 Claims Quinci LeGardye | California Black Media
California may be reopening beginning June 15, but for many unemployed workers, the economic struggle caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is nowhere near ending. Many Californians are still waiting for the state’s Employment Development Department (EDD) to clear their backlog of claims, with the department’s data page showing over 221,000 claims are pending past 21 days as of June 12. On May 28, Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) hosted a press conference featuring constituents from his district who are seeking immediate help from EDD. Three constituents spoke about their struggles while trying to get their unemployment benefits. They experienced extremely long wait times while calling EDD and faced difficulties trying to verify their identity or correct claim amounts with the department. The difficulties with EDD that the speakers expressed in their stories mirrored complaints the department’s service and call centers have been reporting since the pandemic began last year. Roneisha Williams, a Gipson constituent, is waiting on an appeal after receiving an incorrect benefit amount. She described her experience communicating with EDD representatives over the phone as “confusing.”
She said that she received conflicting information from the EDD and representatives asked her for a different set of documents each time she called. “When you call and speak with someone regarding the solution, you're not given the same information. You can call one representative and they'll tell you to submit a documentation. You submit that documentation. You call to confirm that it has been received. The other representative will tell you that not only you weren't supposed to submit that documentation, but really you need to go to this step, and we need to see this documentation.” Williams also spoke about her difficulties going through the identity verification process with the third-party company ID.me. EDD launched the ID.me verification process in October 2020 as part of an effort to crack down on fraud. The department also suspended 1.4 million accounts last December and made some claimants verify their identities. Since then, u nemployed Califor nians directed to ID.me have faced delays and technical issues. Willams also expressed concern for less technologically-savvy claimants who may have to use ID.me.
I Needed Cigarettes to Function By Steven Littles Men’s Health Month Special
Steven Littles I am an actor, director, producer and resident of Los Angeles. With June being Men’s Health Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to share my story and continue the discussion to better health for Black men. I quit using tobacco because once you pick up a cigarette or vape, it’s hard to put it down. And with tobacco being a major contributor of heart disease, cancer and stroke within my community, I knew it was time for a change. I started smoking cigarettes when I was fifteen-years-old because it was the cool thing to do. Living in New York City, you could smoke just about anywhere except the subway, and being Black, cigarettes were pushed in our communities at a higher rate. I would walk into a bodega and there would be cigarette advertisements all over,
and each shelf behind the register was stocked with cigarettes. I would probably smoke a pack or two a day. I never realized the extent of my addiction. With some people, the cigarette is the footnote to their action, but with me, my action was the footnote to a cigarette. I needed cigarettes to function. My morning routine would consist of waking up, lighting another cigarette, making a cup of coffee, lighting another cigarette, getting dressed and smoking three to four cigarettes on the walk to the subway. It even got to the point where I would deprive myself nutritionally. I would buy a dollar’s worth of salami, and fifty cents worth of cheese just so I had enough to buy a pack of cigarettes. I reeked of burning tar, paper, and other chemicals. My hair, my clothes, my apartment; everything smelled like smoke. My teeth weren’t white, and I could barely taste my food. The road to quitting was not easy. I tried and failed many times. I always felt as if I needed to announce my plans to quit in front of people to hold myself accountable. And each time I made such a statement, I got closer to quitting. Cigarettes also became more expensive, which is another reason why continued in next 2 columns
“Having to contact a third party to qualify for your unemployment benefits is very stressful, especially when they do not have any human contact customer service available. With the ID.me verification, everything is done through your phone. So that in itself is very isolating. I know how to work technology but what about the constituents that aren't familiar with it. What about the constituents that don't have a high-powered or accurate camera on their phone to send a copy of their ID?” Williams said. Roger Lozoya, a pipeline welder who also lives in Gipson’s district, lost his job five months ago, and has had no income since. He said his identity was stolen and used to receive EDD benefits. So, when he tried to get benefits, the EDD told him that he owed them money. Lozoya said, “I’m a welder, and I'm blessed to have a career that I worked hard to get. I pay a lot of taxes and I pay into EDD. The only thing they constantly do to me is call me a liar -- that I'm stealing from them. They told me I owe them $69,000. How do I owe $69,000? At the time they were saying that I was claiming it, I was working.” In the months without income, Lozoya said that he has sold his possessions, including his work truck and tools, to support his family. During the press conference, Gipson called on the EDD to take measures to get through the claims backlog. He also urged the EDD to extend working hours and keep phone lines open during evenings and weekends. Gipson also mentioned the state audits of EDD, and suggested that implementing the recommendations of the State Auditor would likely
help address the backlog. “We absolutely have to do everything we can to make sure that the people who need this help the most, get the help that they're seeking to put food on the table, clothes their children's back and also a roof over the head,” said Gipson. In response to a California Black Media request for comment, EDD Media Services said, “We understand how challenging this pandemic has been for millions of people. Since April 2020, EDD call centers are -- and have been open 12 hours a day, seven days a week -- which includes evenings and weekends, among many other efforts to continually work to improve the customer experience. EDD offers useful self-help information including a 24-hour self-help line 1-866333-4606, AskEDD and an online chatbot answering frequently asked questions, a YouTube channel with helpful videos, and many articles on at EDD.ca.gov. The call center can be reached 8:00 am to 8:00 pm seven days a week at 1-800-300-5616.“ EDD also shared the actions that the department has taken to improve the customer experience, including, “improving the online help text to clearly explain what is required by the bi-weekly certification questions to help claimants avoid delays, deploying document upload, including a mobile-friendly version, to help claimants save time over mail, launching a new feature that allows a caller to hold their place “in line” when contacting the call center until the Department calls the claimant back, [and] continuing to monitor customer areas of confusion and trending issues and addressing them with improved public information.”

Health officials urge Riverside County residents to take precautions as temperatures hit triple-digits County News With temperatures expected to reach triple digits throughout Riverside County this week, health officials are reminding residents to take precautions to protect themselves against the excessive heat. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Riverside County that runs through the week. Some areas of the Coachella Valley are predicted to reach 120 degrees during the week. “High temperatures in portions of Riverside County are nothing new, but those being predicted during the week can be very unsafe, particularly for those who are very young, very old and those with underlying health conditions,” said Dr. Geoffrey Leung, public health officer for Riverside County. “You do not want to ignore the potential for harm.” Leung urged residents to limit outdoor activities to early mornings or after sunset, and cut back altogether physically strenuous activities, like outdoor jogging or work outs. Clothing should be lighter fabrics and a wide-brimmed hat. Residents and workers in the Coachella Valley should be careful, even for those who believe they are acclimated to the heat. “Being out in these types of temperatures for even a short period of time can be harmful,” Leung said. “Taking extra
precautions can make a big difference.” Officials are urging residents to visit one of more than 40 cool centers located throughout the county. Individuals who are particularly susceptible to excessive heat, including the elderly and families with young children, are encouraged to visit a cool center. The centers will provide snacks and water, in addition to activities. Leung reminded those who will be driving long distances to check their vehicles to make sure they are running properly and to carry extra water in the car. Drivers are also urged to never leave children, the elderly or pets in a parked vehicle even for a short period of time. County/Government/Health News The National Weather Service has issued Excessive Heat Watches and Warnings for much of the South Coast Air Basin and the Coachella Valley, increasing the likelihood of poor air quality in many areas. This heat wave is expected to last through at least Saturday. Levels of ground-level ozone (smog) – the predominant summertime pollutant – are likely to reach the Unhealthy or higher Air Quality Index (AQI) levels throughout most of the South Coast Air Basin and the Coachella Valley. Very Unhealthy AQI levels are expected in favored locations such as Southwestern San Bernardino County. Areas near the coast
may reach Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups or higher AQI levels. Atypically poor air quality is due to a strong high pressure ridge located over the Desert Southwest. The National Weather Service forecasts that temperatures will be highest Tuesday through Saturday, with temperatures 10-20 degrees F above average. Elevated temperatures, which enhance ozone formation rates and increase emissions of chemicals leading to ozone formation, coupled with predicted light winds may cause unusually high and persistent levels of ozone pollution. Summer school programs are set to open in real time, and Long Beach educators hope to see students back in their traditional classrooms as the latest American Rescue Plan funding helps districts prepare for fall reopening. LBUSD board member Erik Miller said the district is currently working on learning acceleration classes specifically to assist with some of the deficits created by the pandemic. Many academic and social services are available to help students acclimate back to in-person learning. But, he said more importantly is the recovery from lost learning. “We’re constantly assessing the academic performance and the social and emotional health of our students. Though we are
still not fully aware of the impact of COVID, we know that it has been detrimental and we’re prepared to address that,” he said. Depending on the age group, kids will return to several programs and services open through the summer with in-person and virtual options. In the classroom, he said that safety protocols will continue indefinitely. Students must stand three feet apart, and wear their masks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its K-12school guidance last week, stating that students should maintain a distance of at least 3 feet in classroom settings. Miller said he is also working with several affinity groups within the district to address the needs of students in some of the hardest hit areas. “Predominantly the groups are heavily influenced and impacted, African American students are a focus of my tenure on the board,
as we know that they are the lowest performing demographic in our district,” he said. California school districts are in the money for $15.3 billion in federal aid under the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan signed in March by President Biden. Including the first round of COVID CARES Act funding, Long Beach Unified School District will receive $410 million in total stimulus relief. The Board is currently in budget conversations, and he said that his priority is to ensure resources are distributed equitably. “The district is aware of the academic and emotional impact of COVID. With the additional resources, we’ve been allotted, we plan to address those from an equitable and efficient manner,” he said. But he stressed that money is not the permanent solution. “It’s a temporary answer. We have to be both strategic and efficient with those funds, it does sound like a large number, all it means is there is a lot more work, there’s a bigger impact we can make.” Long before COVID, parents that participated in a racial equity framework and community survey had expressed concerns that less than half of Black students were meeting the A-G requirements to enter college, and about one-third were meeting benchmarks in Math and English. Equity barriers are a problem. Long Beach Unified School District, and Black students in
particular, are named in a recent updated UCLA study as one of 14 districts countywide with unequal access to education. Before the pandemic, a 2019 UCLA study by the Center for the Transformation of Schools, Beyond the Schoolhouse: Digging Deeper, showed that Black students were seriously lagging behind. Researchers of the recently updated study said they believe any new dated collected postpandemic will show that conditions in communities and schools have worsened through COVID. Because Los Angeles Unified and Long Beach Unified hold the highest population of Black students in the county, and also the largest homeless enrollment, the report highlighted that basic needs must be addressed as the top priority. “These figures paint a stark reality of not only the sheer numbers of students experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County, but also point to a need for supporting housing insecure Black youth,” the report said. Among other concerns, researchers called attention to what it will take to reopen schools, and essential learning recovery plans, particularly to address the needs of Black families that have taken the brunt of COVID-19. “We cannot ignore how the physical, social, emotional and psychological state of communities of color, Black families in particular, have continued in next 2 columns

Big Tobacco has flooded communities of color with menthol and even floated rumors that it somehow makes cigarettes less deadly. This manipulation caused massive death.
So enough with the death of our people. Death to the racist ways of the tobacco industry. Death to the lies and deceit that they’ve spread. And finally, death to the use of the M-word.
