By Lauren Victoria Burke Last year, Senate Republicans serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee moved the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. This week, starting on March 21, those same Republicans suddenly had problems with Jackson’s sentencing decisions they’d never mentioned before. As Judge Jackson’s confirmation hearings to be an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court moved forward, it was clear that Republicans would attempt to brand the Judge as soft on crime. Jackson is expected to be confirmed by the Senate and become the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in American history. The “soft on crime” strategy wasn’t a new way of weakening the power of Black public officials, but what was new was the particular subject matter Republicans focused on: Sexual violence. Five Republican Senators, Ted Cruz (R-TX), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Tom Cotton (RAR) and Marsha Blackburn (ROK) focused on the sentencing of seven cases related to child pornography and sex trafficking. The seven cases represented 1.6 percent of the 580 cases Judge Jackson has presided over. On March 18, The American

The association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary was unanimous in their decision. “Can you fairly judge a Catholic,” Sen. Graham asked on day one of the questioning after asking the Judge what religion she was. On day three of questioning on March 23, Graham put words in the Judge’s mouth she didn’t say in a determined effort to link her with light sentencing in child pornography cases. “You don’t think that’s a bad thing I think that’s a horrible thing,” Graham said loudly pointing his finger at Jackson. “That’s not what the witness
said and she should be allowed to answer,” Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) shot back at Graham. The five Republican Senators, particularly Graham and Hawley appeared to be avenging the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. Kavanaugh was accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford, a professor who alleged that when she was 15-year-old a drunk teenaged Kavanaugh engaged in rough housing at a private home with another drunk male. The allegations blew up Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings in late 2018. Judge Jackson repeatedly answered similar questions from Hawley and Graham on her sentencing decisions even after Sen. Mazie Hirono (DHI) broke down in detail all of
her sentencing decisions on the matters Republicans were focused on. Republicans complained that they didn’t have the information Democrats on the panel did. “I’m telling you right now I’m not letting anyone steal my joy,” said Sen. Cory Booker (DNJ) to Judge Jackson after she endured a barrage of questions from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO). Booker gave Jackson a pep talk after Sen. Hawley’s abrasive questioning and recounted some of his experiences as one of only two Black members of the U.S. Senate as Judge Jackson sat at the table and listened. Her husband Patrick was seen sitting behind her and at one point held the hand of their daughter as Booker spoke and the Judge wiped away a tear. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) said, “I thought you’ve done a great job in the last couple of days,” Tillis said to Jackson adding it was hard to have “one arm tied behind your back” during questioning. Born in Prague, Czechia, Madeline Albright stood just four feet and ten inches tall. But her legacy is as significant as that of any other political figure. Madeleine Albright, the first female secretary of state who remained a close friend with fellow secretaries, Colin Powell (the first Black secretary of state) and Condoleezza Rice (the first Black woman secretary of state), has died at 84. Albright’s first notable foray into the U.S. political scene came when President Jimmy Carter tapped her as his national security counselor.
Born in Prague, Czechia, Albright stood just four feet and ten inches tall. But her legacy is as significant as that of any other political figure. Albright’s family escaped the Nazis before arriving in America. Albright would make her mark in the political sphere by advising Sen. Walter Mondale, Gov. Michael D u ka k is, and President Bill Clinton.
Under Clinton, she became U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and then secretary of state. She cherished her kinship with Rice and Powell, both of whom acknowledged seeking her out for advice when they were cast in the role of secretary of state. Following Powell’s death in 2021, Albright spoke of the bond between the two respected public servants. “He was truly an incomparable man in every way and incredibly smart, dedicated to this country,” Albright told NPR. “And turned out we were – got to be very, very good friends. And he was somebody that understood what our country needed and had served it with great honor.” Albright often spoke of her concerns about divisions in America, particularly during the Donald Trump presidency.
In 2021, she spoke of being bothered by individuals who “know about where facts come from” but ignore them. “In a (2018) book that I wrote is ‘Fascism: A Warning,’ I went back, and I actually looked at how fascism began, which it did with Mussolini,” Albright stated during a broadcast conversation with Rice. “The best quote in the whole book comes from Mussolini, and he said, ‘if you pluck a chicken one feather at a time, nobody notices,’ and that is what I think is kind of happening in the United States,” she stated. “The major thing Mussolini did was to identify with one group at the expense of another, who then became the scapegoats. There are no photos, there is hardly any remembrance of David then at 23 years old. Like he has not existed, but he has, and is very much alive. Now he is 65 years old, he has been wrongfully incarcerated for thirtynine years within the walls of The Correctional Training Facility. Soledad has been his home for thirty-seven of those years. Convicted for second degree murder, a crime that he did not commit, and set up by the Color of Law who was supposed to protect and defend him, through San Diego, CA. (Currently David is at California Men’s Colony, San Luis Obispo) Now awaiting his appellate decision for FREEDOM! David offered a ride to two men that asked David to use his van to pick up items from where one of the individuals was moving from, in 1982. David waited in his van listening to music as words were exchanged by the two men and the gentleman, he wanted no part
of arguing. While inside one of the two men killed the man of the house. They put their stuff into the back of David’s van, and they drove away. David did not know anything about the murder until two days later. One of the men came and told David he needed to go to Mexico with him. He asked, “why do I need to go to Mexico? I am not going anywhere.” His soon to be co-defendant told him, “The other guy killed the man inside the house, where you gave us a ride to.” David punched him out. “Do you realize I drove you guys? They are going to come and question me.” And they did. The detectives did question David and never let him go. The two men were found and the one who committed the crime, wrote three letters to legal counsel stating that David had no idea about the murder, did not take part, or have any knowledge of it. They were sent to David’s Public Defender John T. Philipsburg. The Public Defender who was supposed to defend his client, instead went to the motel and coaxed a “hooker” Ramona Price to say she saw David go into the house. 12 Orgs Fighting Youth Homelessness Win Grants Totaling $38 Million Aldon Thomas Stiles | California Black Media
Last month, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California awarded $38 million in grants to 12 community-based organizations working to combat homelessness among youths and young adults in the state. The governor’s office says the grants are part of a $14 billion ongoing commitment to end homelessness in the state. The funds, distributed through the Homeless Youth Emergency Services and Housing Program, will be used to assist young people who are facing housing insecurity or are currently unhoused in 12 different counties. “These grants will provide relief and emergency support to young people across California experiencing homelessness, who are too often left in dire situations to fend for themselves,” said Newsom. "We’re providing immediate aid for those living on our streets – bringing resources and services directly to young people in need and helping them onto a path towards a stable future," the governor continued. The funds will also go toward providing “mental health support with crisis intervention and stabilization services,” according to Newsom’s office. About a quarter of California’s Homeless population suffers
from severe mental illness, according to the California Department of Public Health. Newsom is also proposing special courts to adjudicate cases involving mental health involving unhoused people across the state. “There's no compassion stepping over people in the streets and sidewalks,” Newsom said at a press briefing earlier this month. “We could hold hands, have a candlelight vigil, talk about the way the world should be, or we could take some responsibility to implement our ideas. That's what we're doing differently here.” “This funding represents an impor tant lifeline in protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our communities,” said California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) Director Mark Ghilarducci. “Through the partnership with these community-based organizations we are able to provide meaningful support and change lives.” According to the California Homeless Youth Project, 200,000 Californians under the age of 18 are homeless for one or more days during the year. “Addressing youth homelessness takes a village," said Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes
Gov’s Relief Plan Would Send Over $9 Billion in Direct Payments to Californians Tanu Henry | California Black Media
Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed an $11 billion relief package to assist Californians struggling with the skyrocketing costs of gas, food and other commodities. The plan includes a mix of direct payments to individuals; suspension of public transportation fares tax rebates; and support for state, county and municipal programs that align with the governor’s goal to make California a zero-emissions state by 2035. The state will provide about $9 billion in funding to cover $400 direct payments to car owners whose vehicles are registered in the state -- with a limit of two rebates per person. The payments will be sent to car owners on debit cards. “We’re taking immediate action to get money directly into the pockets of Californians who are facing higher gas prices as a direct result of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” said Newsom. “But this package is also focused on protecting people from volatile gas prices and
advancing clean transportation – providing three months of free public transportation, fasttracking electric vehicle incentives and charging stations, and new funding for local biking and walking projects,” he added. The plan includes nearly $500 million in funding for clean transportation alternatives and supporting pedestrian and bicycle-rider safety programs. Shor tly af ter Newsom announced his plan, Republicans slammed it, calling it “out of touch,” pointing out oversights and explaining why they think their proposal is better. Last week, California Assembly Republicans introduced legislation that would temporarily suspend the state’s 51-cent-per-gallon gas tax. Democrats unanimously voted against the bill 40-18, arguing that, if the legislation passed, funding would be taken away from important transportation projects without a guarantee from gas stations that they would lower prices. continued in next 2 columns

"Youth overwhelmingly cite family conflict and breakdown -- commonly abuse or neglect, alcohol or drug addiction of a family member, pregnancy, and rejection over sexual orientation -- as the major reasons for their homelessness or episodes of running away," reads the California Coalition for Youth website. The organizations receiving the funds are: Bill Wilson Center (Santa Clara County); Center for Human Services ( Stanislaus County); Community Human Services (Monterey County); Interface Children & Family Services (Ventura County); Larkin Street Youth Services (San Francisco County); Orangewood Foundation (Orange County); Redwood Community Action Agency (Humboldt County); Ruby’s Place (Alameda County); San Diego Youth Services (San Diego County); Volunteers of America Los Angeles (Los Angeles County).Waking the Village (Sacramento County); and Women’s Center – Youth & Family Services (San Joaquin County) Newsom also announced his administration is allocating more than $116 million in funding to seven different “Homekey” projects as a part of
the governor's effort to provide housing for homeless people. Newsom's pandemic-oriented homelessness program, called Project Roomkey, will continue to receive support from the federal government as well. The staterun initiative converts hotels and other facilities into temporary housing for homeless people. A companion program, Project Homekey, provides funding to create permanent housing for formerly unhoused people to counties, cities, local councils and other government authorities. “Continued support from FEMA will allow us to extend Project Roomkey to get more people off the streets and into shelter," the governor said. "Since the start of the pandemic, California has moved with unprecedented speed, helping more than 50,000 homeless individuals.” Last month, California’s junior U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla introduced a bill proposing a nearly $532 billion federal investment over 10 years into tackling California’s and the nation’s twin homelessness and housing affordability crises. Speaking at a Project Homekey site in Sacramento called La Mancha Way Apartments, Padilla, a Democrat, said, the legislation titled “The Housing Act for All” would provide funding for both existing programs and experimental initiatives. “Every person has a right to the dignity and security of housing,” said Padilla. “It’s going to take all levels of government working together to rebuild a more inclusive and equitable society for all. The legislation is an opportunity to invest and align resources in expanding affordable housing and strengthening proven solutions.”

Gallagher also found fault with the governor’s plan for providing relief to people who own electric vehicles and leaving out military personnel who live and serve in California but whose cars may not be registered in the state.
California has the highest number of active-duty military personnel in the country. Assemblymember Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) said, “Corrupt politicians will always prefer ‘rebates’ to actual tax relief because that keeps them in charge of who gets the money and when it’s delivered.” Kiley who refers to Assembly Democrats as “the Supermajority” said the Republican proposal to cut the gas tax “entirely” wouldn’t cost the state “any loss of funding for roads.” “That money would be backfilled from the state’s general fund, and we are said to have a continued on page 6

Waiting for the water to heat up? Use a bucket to catch running water that isn’t at your desired temperature to repurpose later while cleaning other areas of your home. This will help avoid excessive waste. 2. Pay close attention to the amount of water you’re using to dilute cleaning solutions when washing surface areas such as counter tops and floors. The ratio of water to solution is important to properly clean and not be wasteful. 3. Vacuum ledges, windowsills, base boards, and door frames and dust your ceiling fans, blinds, and areas above cabinets, as opposed to wiping them down with water. 4. Skip pre-rinsing dirty dishes and fill your sink with a few inches of soapy water to soak them, instead of washing them with running water. If available, use a dish washer and run full loads only. 5. When cleaning your bathroom, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank to
easily identify if you have a leak. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak- possibly from a worn toilet flapper or fill valve. 6. Spring cleaning the car too? Be sure to use a bucket and sponge or invest in products that allow you to wash your car without using water. Cleaning is a consistent chore that is necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of our homes and environments. Sen. Padilla Is Optimistic About Judge Jackson’s “Significant Moment” in American History Tanu Henry | California Black Media
Senator Padilla meets with Supreme Court Nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. California’s junior United States Sen. Alex Padilla says he is as excited as he is honored to be serving on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary as he and his colleagues conduct hearings to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman nominated to the United States Supreme Court in the judicial branch’s 233-year history. On Feb. 25, President Joe Biden nominated Jackson, a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, to become the 116th Justice on the highest court in the nation. If Jackson is confirmed, she will replace Justice Stephen Breyer, one of her mentors, who announced his retirement in January. “I’m honored to be sharing in this historic and significant moment in our nation’s history,” Padilla told California Black Media (CBM) in a telephone interview. The first Latino to represent California in the upper house
of the United States Congress, Padilla spoke with CBM while taking a short break from a daylong hearing March 23. During that session, lawmakers, Democrats and Republicans, cross examined Jackson. “I am optimistic about Judge Jackson’s confirmation process. She is an outstanding nominee. She has the qualifications, and she has the experience,” Padilla continued. “If she is confirmed, she will bring a much-needed perspective to the Supreme Court.” In January 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom nominated Padilla to replace current Vice President Kamala Harris in the United States Senate. Before that, he served as Secretary of State of California for six years. Jackson met with Padilla at his office at the U.S. Capitol prior to her confirmation hearings last week. “I’m impressed by Judge Jackson’s commitment to the
rule of law, her long record of public service, and her clear understanding of how the law affects people’s everyday lives,” Padilla said after that meeting. Because of the even 50-50 split of Democrats and Republicans currently elected to the United States Senate, no one party has a majority of members on any committee. So, there are six members from both parties serving on the Committee on the Judiciary. Padilla says the upcoming vote on Jackson presents an opportunity for members of the Committee on the Judiciary – and the Senate, more broadly -- to put the extreme partisanship and rancor that has characterized the U.S. Congress in recent years behind them. California’s senior Sen. Dianne Feinstein, also a Democrat, serves on the committee as well. Last week, some Republican members of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary were questioned in the media about the truthfulness of some of their claims about Jackson and the overall nature and tenor of their questioning during the hearings. For example, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) portrayed Jackson as soft on sex offenders, calling up sentences she handed down in seven cases. “Judge Jackson’s views on this matter are not only mainstream; they are correct in my view. Undoubtedly, Jackson — a progressive who
worked as a criminal-defense lawyer — is more sympathetic to criminals than I am,” wrote Andrew McCarthy, a senior fellow at the conservative National Review Institute, disagreeing with Hawley’s asser tion. “If I were a judge, I’m sure I’d impose at least marginally more severe sentences than she has. (Contrary to Hawley’s suggestion, however, she appears to have followed the guidelines, at the low end of the sentencing range, as most judges do.),” McCarthy continued. Charlie Savage, the New York Times Legal Policy and National Security correspondent wrote, “Senator Marsha Blackburn, Republican of Tennessee, ripped into Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on Monday during her Supreme Court confirmation hearing, tying the nominee to a wide range of conservative grievances. But the lawmaker’s accusations appeared to often be based on quotes taken out of context.” Savage examined statements and accusations Blackburn made about Jackson on a range of issues, including parental rights, critical race theory, transgender athletes and criminal sentencing. Before serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals, Jackson was a federal judge on the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia and Vice Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Philipsburg about the letters he received from his codefendant, he did say that he received them, he then said, “the judge probably won’t even look at them, I don’t know what happened to them, I lost them.” David knew he was in trouble and had to take the plea. The public defender told him, “The judge wants to give you 15 to life, you’ll probably get out in 7, or you may get the death penalty.” David changed his plea eight times and even fired John T. Philipson because he was not comfortable with what was happening. Philipson told David, “Shut the f… up, you are not changing your plea again and you are not firing me either.” The Judge, the DA and John T. Philipson convicted David for second degree murder on hearsay and inadmissible documents that were thrown out, at the preliminary hearing over 38 years ago, even recognized by the then judge Langford stating to Philipsburg, “your client doesn’t like the accessory second degree murder rule, does he?” The San Diego judiciary system set him up and convicted David to Murder by Incarceration and forced him into their systemic racism, prison corruption and judicial slavery. Two years into being incarcerated, David married a doctor named Nancy. She got two people to go into John T. Philipson office and they found the three letters, he said he lost, we have them. David continued to confess his innocence. He went straight to the library and used the prison system as his Soledad Scholastic
University. He studied and studied. David went from a fifth-grade education to an IQ of excellence. David wrote letters to Senators, Governors, Mayors, Pastors and world leaders including Pope Francis, professing his innocence and asking for help. Pope Francis gave David his forever blessing upon David’s foundation and information to go to Rome upon David’s release. He also caught the attention of Senator Alan Cranston. Alan Cranston would go to the prison and visit David, he believed in David’s innocence. David started a foundation in prison Save America’s Children, The Movement of Love, The Movement of Good. Senator Alan Cranston was very supportive, and he would meet with David about how a Movement of Love would and could be possible across America. Senator Cranston was starting to get sick, so he asked his very good friend to forge a friendship and assist with David’s freedom. Ex Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso, not only did he become friends with David, but they formed a special bond. David referred to him as his judicial surrogate father. He died trying to free David. We believe San Diego hid documents so that Cruz Reynoso would not get David exonerated or released, they mocked his excellence. During this time Senator Cranston also introduced Pastor Cecil “Chip” Murray. Pastor of AME Church in Los Angeles an Icon well known to the community for his continued community service and affiliated with USC. All these professional gentlemen would not have put their reputations on the line if they did not believe in David’s innocence. These powerful men all worked to encourage David with the foundation, this is what
has kept him sane and alive with a purpose through this horrible lifetime they subjected upon him. However, the prison system used their “Systemic Racism” to detour his thoughts of ever being released. There was a man who was going to be reappointed back to the prison board. David had some information that he should not be. There was a hearing for David the board disallowed Senator Alan Cranston from being present or speaking on David’s behalf. This also included the shared facts that David discussed, and the gentleman was not reappointed to the prison board. He told David he would never get out of prison unless he was in a pine box. “Retaliation for Whistleblowing” at its highest level. David continued to study. There was a drug program at Atascadero. The program was introduced to David by his counselor. This program had only been offered to rich white boys. The counselor did not feel that David needed to be in prison. He asked David to go through the program and pave the way for other African Americans to receive help from the program as well. David elevated and learned rapidly. The Director of the program asked David to be the President, and he was also given a budget to use by the end of the year. He used it wisely to bring everyone together in a celebration of overcoming adversities. David started creating programs that the prison system still uses today to detour recidivism as well. The program ended at the end of that year and most programs were taken away. David returned to the prison. Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been in the spotlight a lot lately, and it’s not always been in a good way. The latest news involves Will storming the Oscars stage at the 2022 94th Oscar Awards and slapping Chris Rock making a joke about his wife. That moment is the one everyone is talking about from Sunday’s Oscars, and not the winners. Rock made a comment about Jada’s bald head referencing the movie G.I. Jane, where actress Demi Moore shaved her head for the role. It all went down when Rock came out to present an award for Best Documentary. On stage, the comedian laughed and said, “Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2 — can’t wait to see it, all right?” At that point Will walked on stage and proceeded to slap Chris and then calmly walk back to his seat. He then shouted back to Chris saying, “Keep my wife’s name out your mutha—— mouth!” No matter how you feel about the joke, many did not know that Jada has had issues with losing her hair for years. Back in 2018, Jada Pinkett Smith had been wearing headwraps and not showing her hair for months at a time. It turns out the beautiful Girl’s Trip star has been struggling with the hair loss condition, possibly linked to alopecia. She took to social media to explain it. “I’ve been getting a lot of questions about why I’ve been wearing this turban,” said the beautiful 50-year-old actress. “Well, I’ve been having issues with hair loss. And it was terrifying when it first started.” She also says she’s currently receiving steroid injections to help with her loss. “I’m getting steroid injections, which seem to be helping but not curing. But I’m
open to other ideas,” she posted on her Instagram. One type of steroid injection Pinkett Smith may be using is called Corticosteroid Injections. This method of treatment — the most common form of treatment for alopecia areata — uses corticosteroids that are injected into bare patches of skin with a tiny needle. These injections are repeated about every four to six weeks and are usually given by a dermatologist. If new hair growth occurs from corticosteroid injections it is usually visible within four weeks. There are few known side effects related to this kind of treatment. But a drawback of corticosteroid injections, like all treatments for alopecia areata, is that they do not prevent new hair loss from developing. Alopecia is defined as loss of hair from the body. Hair loss is often a cause of great concern to the patient for cosmetic and psychological reasons, but it can also be an important sign of systemic disease. Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. Often it results in a few bald spots on the scalp, each about the size of a coin. Psychological stress may result. People are generally otherwise healthy. In some, all the hair on the scalp or all body hair is lost and loss can be permanent. Alopecia areata is believed to be an autoimmune disease. Risk factors include a family history of the condition. The underlying mechanism involves failure by the body to recognize its own cells with subsequent immunemediated destruction of the hair follicle. Thyroid Problems The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate many processes throughout the body. If the gland makes too much or too little thyroid hormone, the hair growth cycle may falter. But… … hair loss is rarely the only sign of a thyroid problem. Other symptoms include weight gain or loss, sensitivity to cold or heat, and changes in heart rate. and 2.Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have a chronic hormonal imbalance. The body makes higher levels of androgens than expected. This often causes extra hair to sprout on the face and body, while hair on the scalp grows thinner. PCOS can also lead to ovulation problems, acne, and weight gain. But sometimes thinning hair is the only obvious sign. These days, Pinkett Smith said she enjoys using turbans, as they help conceal her condition and are an empowering fashion choice. “When my hair is wrapped, I feel like a queen,” she said.

That distinction goes to Buddy Guy: The Blues Chase the Blues Away, which appeared on PBS in 2021. This nonfiction film has a different mission. Its task is to share how and why guitar heroes like Guy mentor others. Like elders in a village passing on what they know to who’s next in line. Grammy-winning guitarist George “Buddy” Guy grew up on a farm in Louisiana and migrated to Chicago in 1957 to fulfill his dream of becoming a blues musician. In the Windy City, he was mentored by his heroes Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Then he gave what he got. A prime example is exhibited on screen for 1h 47m, as he shepherds fledgling blues guitarist Quinn Sullivan. He’s just one of the many musicians Guy has nurtured. The words, deeds and instructions he’s given Sullivan started back in April 2007. That’s when, as a 7-year-old, the talented white kid guitarist got pulled up on stage by the Black blues icon at a gig in Massachusetts.
Sullivan, a prodigy and virtuoso, lit up the strings on his guitar and could mimic any lick Guy threw his way. Footage depicts that auspicious night and follows the youngster as he turns into a teen and then a young man trying to find his own voice. Though watching his performances and development is interesting, it’s not nearly as captivating as following the paths of other artists with similar experiences. E.g., blues/ belter/guitarist Jonny Lang, who has had record contracts and a stellar career since age 15. However, this “making of a man” aspect does provide learning experiences and a warm emotional core. It’s a feel that helps elevate this decently crafted (director/ producer Jim Farrell) but not artistically daring documentation of Guy’s achievements and mentorships. Aaron Frutman and Michael Andrus’ cinematography captures live performances, backstage rituals, musicians fraternizing and bonds that have grown over the years. Touching moments of parenting, testimonials and lasting relationships prove that we are all only as good the spirit we leave behind in others. And that blazing a trail matters most when others can follow. Guy’s most poignant recollection is his first encounter with his idol
John Lee Hooker, who he yearned to meet. In Chicago, Guy ran into a man that stuttered so badly he couldn’t understand what the dude was badgering him about. Turns out the bothersome man was Hooker, trying to introduce himself but hindered by a speech impediment. Precious anecdotes like that are like listening to songs on an anthology record. One that holds memories and treasures. Fellow musicians spread his legend. Carols Santana: “The Moses of the blues … he literally parts the seas.” Jonny Lang, himself the product of mentoring by blues musician Ted Larsen, has a unique perspective: “A lot of people are called living legends, but not all are as gracious and generous as Buddy Guy.” Susan Tedeschi of the rock/blues group Tedeschi Trucks Band sees a connection: “Guy is a link between Jimi Hendrix and blues music.” At age 85, George “Buddy” Guy still tours, goes from concert to concert and never does a sound check. He learned his trade from those who came before him and is leaving something behind. It’s a calling. A mission. A state of grace. Farmers, fishers and foresters have a dramatically higher suicide rate — at 85 suicides per 100,000 people. For males in those jobs, the rate was even greater. Their suicide rate was 90.5 suicides per 100,000, according to the report. At the turn of the century, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) database on cause of death by occupation study found some interesting stats on the jobs with the highest suicide rates and ranked them. It is important to note that NIOSH sample size: For Black men, the most suicidal jobs with a large sample size were police & detectives (2.55 times higher than average); furnace operators (2.01 times higher than average); and electricians (1.78 times higher than average). For Black women, the most suicidal jobs with a large sample size were protective service occupations (2.79 times higher than average); sales supervisors
(2 times higher than average); and packaging machine operators (1.96 times higher than average). 10. Pharmacists Generally, a pharmacist is responsible for prescribing patients their medications, oftentimes a thankless job. Furthermore, when some patients cannot afford to pay for their medications or insurance will not cover said medications, the pharmacist often takes the blame. Another thing pharmacists have to deal with are the big pharmaceutical companies, sometimes treated as a sales rep as opposed to a health care professional–all of which adds to the frustration when they too want to see the best for their patients. Pharmacists also have a substance abuse rate of nearly 20% higher than average, which contributes to the rate of suicide amongst pharmacists to be 1.29 higher than average. 9. Farm Workers

There were 216 farm accident fatalities in 2012 alone, prompting Forbes magazine to rank farming as one of the nation’s deadliest jobs. 8. Lawyers According to studies, before even graduating from law school, a reported 40% of law students already suffer from depression. Once practicing, lawyers are nearly four times more likely to suffer from depression than the average American. The extremely long hours, poor public opinion, difficult cases and clients, and moral battles within
attorney/client privilege can be reasons why lawyers commit suicide at a rate of 1.33 times higher than the national average. 7. Electricians The electricians’ suicide rate is 1.36 higher than average. While being an electrician can be a lucrative profession, it can also be difficult when the economy is bad and work is scarce. Beyond t he st ressf u l economic factors that may affect electricians, there have been recent studies that have posited that an electrician’s long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields could ultimately affect brain chemistry. A Cataclysmic Invasion on the Heels of a Global Pandemic...continued to hang on the impulses of sadists, narcissists, and power-addicts. Populism, regressive rightwing ideologies, and exclusionary versions of nationalism seem to be working together to weaken democracies, nurture tolerance for injustice, and legitimize these aggressive assertions of the powerful. To that extent, Putin may also be seen as a product and a symbol of these regressive and detrimental trends of our time. Amidst all the distressing news, we see images of thousands of Russians demonstrating on the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg who are aware of the prospect that this might get them sentenced to fifteen years in jail, and we hear about ordinary Ukrainians taking up arms to defend their country. We also hear about the American veterans reaching out to train them, the hundreds of aid and healthcare workers, and of many people from Europe and the US joining the resistance. We have also heard about Christian and Sikh communities offering shelter, food, medical aid, and assistance to escape even as the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church justifies the invasion. Amidst all the trauma and tragedy, these spontaneous expressions of indignation and solidarity, and of empathy and compassion, do indeed kindle hope. One would hope that such expressions of
solidarity greet the millions of people suffering through similar situations of invasion, occupation, aggression, and massacre in parts of the Middle East and Africa, and in places far away from the “centers of the world,” such as Haiti, Colombia, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, etc. In most of these cases, the silence is loud and apathy conspicuous. But as Martin Luther King Jr., warns: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” As we get to this crisis moment, we also see this as a moment of reckoning. If vertical and centralized powers can threaten to destroy, people’s power can protect, resist, rebuild, and nurture life. Let us hope that this would also be a moment for our generation to reject the fascination with power and violence, kleptocracy, and ideologies of superiority based on skewed anthropological theories and the glorification of narcissistic leaders. Our common future cannot and should not be subject to the whims and fancies of the powerful, but instead be guided by the clamor for life with justice and dignity for all. With thousands dead, dying, and fleeing for safety away from ruined cities, the lives of generations of Ukrainians— and even Russians—who will survive this assault, will not be the same again. We also hear about the possibility of more intense and destructive attacks and of ultrasonic missiles, carpet bombing, chemical and biological weapons, and even nuclear bombs and World War III. It is not just Ukraine, Russia, and Europe, but the whole world seems to be in danger with crises of sorts, even as it is yet to recover from the impact of a deadly pandemic. Meanwhile, mediations continue, and they are the only hope even as they also seem to fail. For many around the world, it is an invasion and not a war, one that is waged by one man: Vladimir Putin. Putin may be representative of a collective of interests in Russia. But it is Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and he has his own reasons—whether the rest of Russia owns them or not. It will last as long as he wants and will remain as his invasion
in history. His hold over an array of legitimating doctrines, such as Sovietism, nationalism, military patriotism, Russian Orthodox fundamentalism, etc., for twenty-two years has turned him into someone with enormous vertical and personalized power, capable of shattering millions of lives and threatening the future of the entire world. This is not the first time that despots have inflicted such massive human suffering. It is also not the first time that such invasions have occurred. Let us also not forget that some such extremely oppressive and brutal regimes around the world have also been supported and perpetrated by some of the most boastful democracies and champions of human rights and freedom. What perhaps stands out as an aberration is that alongside vibrant democracies, broader spaces for expressions of liberal thought and assertions of individual and collective freedom, the twenty-first century world has also turned out to be a space for despots and authoritarian regimes, and the associated ideologies of unbridled greed, hate, and privilege. Financial Planners This is a correlation between financial workers and suicide that has been witnessed by the public since the Great Depression when stockbrokers who had been bankrupted leaped from buildings to their death. The suicide rate amongst financial workers in America is 1.51 times higher than average. In the first three months of 2014 alone, there were already 11 reported suicides amongst those in finance. 4. Veterinarians Being a veterinarian requires technical skill, proper diagnoses, and little room for mistakes. Many vets work long hours and are constantly subjected to seeing animals put to sleep, which may detrimentally affect their emotional wellbeing. This may lead to feelings of depression and emotional stress. Many veterinarians may also feel like they are taking optimal care of themselves and don’t need to seek treatment if they suffer from a mental illness. The likelihood of a veterinarian committing suicide is 1.54. 3. Police Officers When most people think of police officers, they think of upstanding citizens that are in great mental and physical health. However, enforcing the law is often very stressful and requires a significant amount of work. Many police officers work overtime and depending on their assigned duties, they may become more stressed than average people. Police officers are nearly two-fold more likely to become depressed than people working other occupations. Because of the stressful nature of their job, police officers are also less likely to get adequate sleep. Most police officers get under six hours of sleep. The odds of a police officer committing suicide are 1.54.

Suicide rates for female police officers are approximately 2.03 times that of the average population, while African American male police officers are approximately 2.55 times your average worker. 2. Dentists When was the last time you were truly happy to go to the dentist? Not many people can say that they were. A dentist’s suicide rate is 1.67 times higher than the American average. Being a dentist brings with it long hours, reluctant and difficult patients, and not a strong guarantee of success or stability. Because of this, studies suggest that dentists are more likely to suffer from mental disorders, but are also more reluctant to seek treatment for disorders. 1. Doctors** Doctors are 1.87 times more likely to commit suicide than the average American. While suicide accounts for roughly 2% of all deaths amongst the general population in the United States, 4% of all physician deaths are by suicide due to the high-stress nature of the job. Studies have shown when a doctor suffers from depression or another mental disorder, they are reluctant to seek treatment, potentially fearing for their practice if word of their own need for professional help were to be revealed. **Marine engineers came in nearly tied with physicians. Bonus: Scientists Starting off, those who are most stressed or depressed are more likely to commit suicide. And the work of a scientist can be quite stressful. The push to discover and innovate as well as to constantly publish new findings creates a lot of stress in a field where the competition is rather fierce, and sometimes, even cut-throat. Suicide rates amongst scientists are surprising, with scientists having a likelihood of committing suicide at a rate of 1.28 higher than the general population. For every 45 male suicides in the field, there are an estimated five female suicides per year, with one prominent example of a female chemist, (chemists being the scientists most likely to take their own lives), committing suicide by swallowing cyanide upon refusal of a research grant.

How COVID-19 Can Change the Brain World /Health News
Scientists have discovered that even a mild case of COVID-19 might inflict damage on your brain. On average, middle-aged and older adults who’d been sick with COVID showed signs of tissue shrinkage in brain areas related to the sense of smell, the researchers reported. They also tended to have more trouble completing complex mental tasks, when compared to people with no history of COVID-19 — an effect that was most striking among the oldest adults. Experts said the findings strengthen evidence that even mild COVID-19 may cause detectable deficits in the brain. That’s because the researchers had access to brain scans taken from people both before and after they’d been infected. That helps distinguish brain changes associated with COVID-19 from any abnormalities that may have already been there. “We still cannot be sure with 100% certainty that there is a causal effect of the infection,” lead researcher Gwenaelle Douaud, a professor at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom
says. “But,” she adds, “we can disentangle the effects that we observe from differences that may have pre-existed in the brain of the participants before they became infected with SARS-CoV-2.” What does this mean? There are still key questions, however. What caused the brain changes? And what, precisely, do they mean? Recent research has estimated that up to 30% of people with COVID-19 develop “long-haul” symptoms that plague them well after they’ve beaten the infection. The list includes fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath, dulled sense of smell and taste, and problems with memory and concentration that have been dubbed “brain fog.” COVID Long Haulers: Long Term Health Issues Caused by COVID Experts still do not know what causes “long COVID,” or why it can strike after a mild infection. One theory pins the blame on overactivation of the immune
system, leading to widespread inflammation in the body. Dr. Joanna Hellmuth is a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco, who is studying post-COVID symptoms. She says it’s not clear what may have caused the brain changes seen in this study. But Hellmuth says the fact that tissue shrinkage occurred in smell-related areas points to one possibility: lack of sensory input. Particularly during the pandemic’s early waves, COV ID -19 commonly caused people to lose their sense of smell. Hellmuth cautions against seeing alarm in the findings. She notes that the average brain changes were “small,” and do not mean that people with mild COVID-19 face the prospect of brain “degeneration.” The study, published online March 7 in the journal Nature, included 785 British adults aged 51 to 81. All had undergone brain scans before the pandemic, as part of a research project called the UK Biobank. They came back for a second scan during the pandemic. In that group, 401 contracted COVID-19 at some point between the two brain scans, while 384 did not. Nearly all who fell ill — 96% — had a milder case. The second scan was taken an average of 4.5 months after their illness. On average, Douaud’s team says, the COVID group showed greater tissue loss in specific brain areas related to smell, plus a bigger reduction in overall brain size. The effect amounted to an extra 0.2% to 2% tissue loss, the
investigators found. Douaud agrees that a lack of sensory input might explain the changes in smell-related brain areas. But, she says, her team did not know whether participants had, in fact, lost their sense of smell. So they could not look for correlations between those symptoms and brain changes. The researchers were able to look at participants’ performance on some standard tests of mental sharpness. And again, the COVID-19 group showed a greater decline, on average. The divide was most clear among the oldest adults, Douaud says. People in their 70s who’d had COVID worsened by 30%, on average. That compared with 5% among their COVID-free peers. There was some evidence that performance decline correlated with shrinkage in a brain structure involved in thinking and other mental skills. Can changes to the brain resolve? It is possible, Douaud says, that the brain changes associated with COVID-19 resolve over time. “The best way to find out would be to scan these participants again in one or two years’ time,” she adds. Another question is whether the results apply to people who’ve had COVID-19 in more recent times. CDC Recommends Additional Boosters for Certain Individuals World/Health News Data continue to show the importance of vaccination and booster doses to protect individuals both from infection and severe outcomes of COVID-19. For adults and adolescents eligible for a first booster dose, these shots are safe and provide substantial benefit. During the recent Omicron surge, those who were boosted were 21-times less likely to die from COVID-19 compared to those who were unvaccinated, and 7-times less likely to be hospitalized. CDC continues to recommend that all eligible adults, adolescents, and children 5 and older be up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines, which includes getting an initial booster when eligible. Following FDA’s regulatory action today, CDC is updating its recommendations to allow certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received an initial mRNA booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19. Separately and in addition, based on newly published data, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago may now receive
a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. These updated recommendations acknowledge the increased risk of severe disease in certain populations including those who are elderly or over the age of 50 with multiple underlying conditions, along with the currently available data on vaccine and booster effectiveness. The following is attributable to Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky: “Today, CDC expanded eligibility for an additional booster dose for certain individuals who may be at higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19. Boosters are safe, and people over the age of 50 can now get an additional booster 4 months after their prior dose to increase their protection further. This is especially important for those 65 and older and those 50 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe disease from COVID-19 as they are the most likely to benefit from receiving an additional booster dose at this time. CDC, in collaboration with FDA and our public health partners, will continue to evaluate the need for additional booster doses for all Americans.”

She told us a week prior, “your own public defender set you up and the Judge and DA were complicit to convict you for second degree murder on heresy and inadmissible documents that were thrown out along with the murder at the preliminary hearing over 38 years ago. White Professor/Psychiatrist Condemned For Racist Tweet After Calling Dark-Skinned Model “A Freak Of Nature” Group says racism in mental health industry is rife and needs accountability BlackNews.com

Frederick Shaw, founder of CCHR’s Task Force Against Racism and Modern-Day Eugenics and President of the NAACP Inglewood/South Bay Branch, has called for stronger actions to be taken in response to racism in the mental health system. This follows a recent racist tweet by Columbia University, New York, psychiatrist Jeffrey Lieberman who questioned whether having beautiful dark color skin, referring to model Ms. Nyakim Gatwech, was a “freak of nature.” Columbia University suspended him over the tweet.[1] Despite the A mer ican Psychiatric Association (APA) last year apologizing for its more than 170-year role in perpetuating racism and abusing people of
color, Shaw says Lieberman’s comment is endemic of what is still happening in the mental health field. Shaw anticipates the APA’s revision of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) being released this month could exacerbate this. Lieberman was president of the APA when the manual was published in 2013 to enormous criticism about a lack of scientific truth and for pathologizing all aspects of life. His Task Force’s website reveals a history of this abuse. Lieberman also resigned as director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. The Institute has its own history of conducting racist experiments involving dozens of 6- to 10-yearold Black or Hispanic boys, who were given fenfluramine to test a theory that violent or criminal behavior may be predicted by levels of certain brain chemicals. The drug’s side effects include serious heart and lung problems, abnormal behavior, irritability,
seizures, and negativism.[2] Shaw says psychiatry has longviewed Blacks as prone to violence. Millions of research dollars have been poured into trying to “prove” this fallacy. Shaw points to the 1990s’ Committee to Stop the Violence Initiative, which was formed to expose and close the research program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health that searched for a non-existent violent gene in inner-city children, theorizing that the antidepressant Prozac could prevent violence. In 1792, Benjamin Rush, the “father” of American psychiatry, justified segregation because he believed Blacks’ skin color was a disease called “negritude,” a form of leprosy. Rush also theorized that Blacks did not feel pain as intensively as whites. “Today, half of white medical trainees still believe such myths that Blacks have thicker skin or less sensitive nerve endings, leading to pain being under-treated,” Shaw said. However, in the field of mental health, he says, the opposite is true—an over-presentation of psychiatric labeling and drugging, requiring greater accountability and an appropriate compensatory response to damaging racist treatment. Approximately 3,501,000 were owned by men. Approximately 1,076,000 were minority-owned: 134,100 had Black or African-American owners; 581,00 had Asian owners; and 347,000 had Hispanic owners. How Small Businesses Have Fared During the Pandemic The Small Business Pulse Survey (SBPS) is an experimental data product measuring the effect of changing business conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic. SBPS is classified as experimental because it does not meet the same quality standards as our regular data products, like CBP and ABS.
SBPS data complements existing Census Bureau data collections by providing highfrequency, detailed information on the challenges small businesses have been facing during the Coronavirus pandemic.
