Lawmakers work to prevent artificial intelligence from harming marginalized communities By Ashlee Banks Special to the AFRO U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.4) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.-8) received a comprehensive report from the bipartisan House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, which outlines key findings and forwardlooking recommendations for advancing America’s leadership in AI innovation responsibly. The 253-page report presents guiding principles aimed at fostering innovation while ensuring the protection of civil liberties. The report emphasizes the importance of establishing a framework for responsible AI development. It highlights the potential benefits of AI technologies while also addressing the risks associated with them. In a statement, Jeffries said the safe adoption of artificial intelligence holds great promise. “The development and safe adoption of artificial intelligence holds great promise to make a positive difference in the lives of the American people, and Congress has an important role in bringing these benefits to fruition,” said the House Democratic leader. “At the same time, we must ensure that appropriate guardrails are in place to prevent bad actors from exploiting this transformative technology,” added Jeffries.

Johnson added, “Developing a bipartisan vision for AI adoption, innovation, and governance is no easy task, but a necessary one as we look
to the future of AI and ensure Americans see real benefits from this technology.” The bipartisan effort was underscored by U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke (D-N.Y.-9), who has been a vocal advocate for addressing the potential harms of AI. Clarke expressed satisfaction with the report’s findings, emphasizing the importance of civil rights and civil liberties within the AI landscape. “As one of the first members of
Congress to call out the potential harms of artificial intelligence, I’ve worked diligently to sound the alarm and introduced legislation on deepfakes and algorithmic bias,” said Clarke. “It’s imperative that Congress establishes a clear standard for identifying deepfakes and provides prosecutors, regulators, and especially victims with the necessary tools to combat fake or manipulated content,” she added. The Democratic lawmaker
further highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by algorithmic biases that disproportionately affect marginalized groups. “When corporations with vast resources continue to allow their AI systems to carry biases against vulnerable groups, countless individuals face prejudice in digital spaces,” she remarked. “This report is a step forward in working across the aisle to ensure our AI resiliency and lays a good foundation as we
head into the 119th Congress.” U.S. Rep. Jay Obernolte (D-Calif.-23), chairman of the task force, expressed pride in the report’s comprehensive nature. “It has been my honor to lead the House AI Task Force in producing this detailed, forwardthinking, and bipartisan report,” Obernolte said in a statement. “Our hope is that this report will inform Congress and the American people on the advantages, complexities, and risks of artificial intelligence.” C o - C h a i r Te d L i e u (D-Calif.-36), stressed the importance of collaboration in addressing the complexities of AI. “Despite the wide spectrum of political views of Members on our Task Force, we created a report that reflects our shared vision for a future where we protect people and champion American innovation,” Lieu said in a statement. “This initial report is only the first step, and I am grateful to work alongside my friend, Jay Obernolte, on this important effort.” The task force was established in February, with both Speaker Johnson and Leader Jeffries appointing 12 members from key committees of jurisdiction. The collaboration aims to ensure that America leads in AI innovation while safeguarding against emerging threats.

Homelessness hits unprecedented high in 2024 By AFRO Staff

More than 770,000 people were homeless in 2024, an 18 percent increase from 2023 and the highest number ever recorded, according to a new report released Dec. 27 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The devastating numbers were driven by a lack of affordable housing, a surge in migration to some areas and devastating natural disasters, in addition to rising inflation, stagnating wages among middle- and lower-income households, and the persisting effects of systemic racism, officials stated. “Increased homelessness is the tragic, yet predictable, consequence of underinvesting in the resources and protections that help people find and maintain safe, affordable housing,” said Renee Willis, incoming interim CEO of the National Low
Income Housing Coalition, in a statement. “As advocates, researchers, and people with lived experience have warned, the number of people experiencing homelessness continues to increase as more people struggle to afford skyhigh housing costs.” The figures compounded an already record-setting 12 percent increase in the U.S. homeless population in 2023, which HUD attributed to the end of pandemic-era assistance programs, skyrocketing rents and a record number of people experiencing homelessness for the first time. The federal housing agency captured its annual snapshot of homelessness across the country by tallying the number of individuals in shelters, temporary housing and unsheltered settings
on one night in January 2024. However, the numbers are likely higher as they do not account for the unhoused who sought shelter at the homes of family and friends. The record level of homelessness was evident across varied groups, including families with children–which demonstrated a disturbing estimated 40 percent increase– and unaccompanied youth. About 150,000 children experienced homelessness on a single night in 2024, reflecting a 33 percent from the previous year. “ latest report illustrates something the country already knows: More people than ever need help paying rent. More people than ever are becoming homeless for the first time. Homelessness is up because our leaders haven’t addressed that,”
wrote The National Alliance to End Homelessness, a nonprofit focused on preventing and ending homelessness, in a social media post about the HUD report. But the Biden administration did point out some positive trends as a result of its campaign against homelessness. For instance, Blacks–not unexpectedly–represented a disproportionate segment of the homeless population: Blacks comprise 12 percent of the total U.S. population and 21 percent of the U.S. population living in poverty but accounted for 32 percent of all people experiencing homelessness. However, that figure was down from 37 percent in 2023. More encouragingly, the population of homeless veterans continued its decline, dropping by 8 percent or 2,692 fewer veterans, from 2023 to 2024. In total, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness has declined by 55 percent since data collection among that group began in 2009. “No American should face homelessness, and the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring every family has access to the affordable, safe, and quality housing they deserve,” said Adrianne Todman, acting secretary of HUD, in a statement. “While this data is nearly a year old, and no longer reflects the situation we are seeing, it is critical that we focus on evidence-based efforts to prevent and end homelessness. We know what works and our success in reducing veteran homelessness by 55.2% since 2010 shows that.”

These practical reforms protect what matters most while creating more opportunities for all Californians.” Governor Gavin Newsom 🏘️ Building more homes, faster Here are just some of the laws taking effect in 2025 that will create more housing for all Californians: More housing in more communities: SB 1037 by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) cracks down on local governments that block or delay approved housing, imposing penalties up to $50,000 per month — funds that go right back into supporting affordable housing in those same areas. Meanwhile, AB 3093 by Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego) updates the rules so cities and
counties must plan for everyone’s housing needs — especially folks at the lowest income levels — so that all Californians can have a place to live. Expanding emergency shelter options: SB 1395 by Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) makes it easier to develop and operate interim housing, including emergency shelters and navigation centers. These facilities provide more than a place to stay – they connect people with housing assistance, health care, and other services to help them get back on their feet. Expanding farmworker housing: Every day, California's farmworkers put food on tables of residents across the state, yet many struggle to find homes near the fields where they work. Jimmy Carter Dies at 100 The New York Times

Shay has spent the last 14 years serving on many local, county and state boards, political action committees and commissions, centered on criminal justice, LGBTQ and reproductive rights, gender-based violence and environmental protections. California Black Media (CBM) spoke with Franco-Clausen about her successes, frustrations and future plans heading into 2025. Looking back at 2024, what stands out to you as your most important achievement and why?

The former president, a peanut farmer and Democrat from Georgia, was known as much for his charity and diplomatic work later in life as he was for his single presidential term, which ended in 1981. He lived longer than any other U.S. president. Here’s the latest. Former President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Ga., after deciding nearly two years ago to forgo further medical care following a series of medical crises, according to two people close to the family and The Carter Center, the nonprofit he and his wife founded. At 100, he was the longestlived president in American history and became known as much for his post-presidential diplomacy and charitable works as for his single, economically turbulent term in office. Tributes poured in on Sunday from his White House successors, including President Biden, who said in a statement that “America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian.” President-elect Donald J. Trump said in a statement that Mr. Carter “did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.” Mr. Carter, a peanut farmer and former Naval officer who served aboard submarines and studied nuclear physics, was elected governor of Georgia as a Democrat in 1970. With a promise never to lie to the American public, Mr. Carter positioned himself as the reformist antidote to an era of deep political mistrust after Watergate and the Vietnam War and won the presidency in 1976. He presided over four tumultuous years plagued by long gas lines, high inflation and the Iran hostage crisis. But he also signed a strategic arms limitation agreement with the Soviet Union and helped forge the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. Mr. Carter cemented his legacy with a deeper engagement in public affairs than any other former president of modern times and was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. Chip Carter, the former president’s son, said in a statement his father was a hero to
“everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love.” He added, “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” Here is what to know: Memorial services for Mr. Carter will play out over the next eight days, according to plans that have been in the works for years. The plans call for Mr. Carter to be taken by motorcade to Atlanta, where he will lie in repose for 36 hours at the Carter Center. He then will be flown to Washington and lie in state at the United States Capitol for a day and a half before a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral. After that service, Mr. Carter will be flown back to Georgia and taken by motorcade to Plains, where he will be buried in the family compound. Mr. Carter — who survived a series of health crises in recent years, including a bout with melanoma that spread to his liver and brain — entered hospice care in February 2023. As Mr. Carter’s health declined, a former Texas politician came forward claiming that he took part in a 1980 tour of the Middle East with a clandestine agenda to sabotage Mr. Carter’s re-election campaign. In November 2023, Mr. Carter’s wife, Rosalynn Carter, died at age 96, two days after the Carter Center, the nonprofit they founded in Atlanta in 1982, said she had entered hospice care at home. Theirs was one of the great love stories in American politics — they were married for nearly eight decades and weathered the coronavirus pandemic together in the modest house they built in Plains, his hometown. Mr. Carter’s funeral will be the first for a former U.S. president since that of George H.W. Bush in 2018, which Mr. Carter attended alongside four of his successors: George W. In the role that I sit in as the political director for Equality California, we endorsed 216 candidates. I think the one achievement after this election that I'm proud of is that we overturned Prop 8 to protect same-sex marriages here because they're about to attack our rights on the federal level, come 2025. I'm glad at least we changed our California constitution to reflect and protect my marriage. How did your leadership and investments contribute to improving the lives of Black Californians? I contribute through my lived experience. I may have achieved a lot, but I come from those same communities that are marginalized, East Oakland, East San Jose, Watts. It gives me a different perspective. I am a formerly incarcerated youth who was in foster care. I think I contribute that bit of understanding, and I operate from an equity lens. I'm willing to push people to make them recognize that hey, you cannot
forget about Black people. We are the most marginalized. What frustrated you the most over the last year? What frustrates me is our inability to recognize that we forget people. I was tapped to work on the Harris campaign from Equality California. And through that, being at that table, I was frustrated that they weren't listening to Americans and not looking at the data. The reason Trump won is because he had consistent messaging, and we didn't debunk it. I think I'm more frustrated that we don't fully listen to people all the time when they're critiquing us. So, I'm frustrated that people at the top don't always know what's happening to people at the bottom and their messaging doesn't reflect our issues. What inspired you the most over the last year? All those people that came out to support Kamala Harris. I was really proud that people came out. I was pretty proud that my son voted for the first time for a Black woman for President. What is one lesson you learned in 2024 that will inform your decision-making next year? Be fearless. Sometimes I second-guess myself. I push back, but I could push more because I'm qualified. I have the education, I have the experience, and I know what I'm talking about in all the rooms that I go in. And I must be confident in that. How to handle grief during the holidays by Rev. Dorothy Boulware in waves. They may appear fine one moment and devastated the next. Their behavior might regress (bedwetting, clinginess) or change in unusual ways (withdrawal, aggression). They process grief differently at different developmental stages. WIB: How can family members best support children who are going through this?
“The first year around the holidays tends to be extremely hard,” says licensed counselor Dr. Jesaira Glover-Dulin. (Photo by Claudia Wolff on Unsplash) Grief is something everyone identifies with. The scientific definition might not emerge at the moment, but everyone can immediately identify with loss on some level. To have had something valuable in one moment and in the next, to have it taken away. A loved one. A relationship. A precious pet. Or maybe a job. Or a house. Some of us have even experienced the loss of youth or a dream. No matter the loss, it’s exponentially difficult to endure during a holiday season — a time when the best of our humanity surfaces; a time when we try to ensure everyone is filled with joy; a time when we try to ensure everyone’s needs are met. Not only do we feel the loss, we feel guilty for our feelings and fear we’re diminishing others’ happiness. Time to consult a professional. Dr. Jesaira Glover-Dulin, a licensed counselor, professional coach, and corporate trainer, said, “The grief relationship is a complicated one. While the grieving process is not a cookie cutter journey, typically the first year around the holidays tends to be extremely hard.” So, we continued to pose more questions: Word In Black: Should people expect specific feelings? Or lack thereof? Jesaira Glover-Dulin: Some
might feel sadness, anger, guilt, numbness or relief. Because the presence of grief can feel like a tumultuous wave, I encourage my clients to “ride the wave.” Sometimes, this includes allowing yourself to feel sad or angry. A great strategy to manage these types of emotions is to visualize the emotion as a wave at its beginning, peak, and end. Taking deep breaths while riding out this emotion can help. Grief is often intrusive, so it can be helpful to know that grief can catch you off guard. I also suggest my clients create a plan of action to support them along the way. It might be helpful to commemorate the deceased loved one by cooking their favorite dish so that they feel “close” to them. I encourage clients to trust their instincts in these moments even when it is uncomfortable because the presence of grief does pass. WIB: Is there a common reaction? For women? For men? For children. JGD: Women often feel pressure to hold everything together, especially during the holidays. This can lead to burnout or feeling resentful. Some may find themselves overly reflective or deeply emotional. Men may feel compelled to “stay strong” or avoid openly grieving, focusing instead on problem-solving or distractions. This doesn’t mean they aren’t grieving deeply. Children’s grief often surfaces
JGD: When it comes to helping a child through grief, creative expression is always a good strategy to support them. Parents can encourage their children to paint, color, draw, and play. Also, I would encourage parents to cultivate an environment that normalizes talking about the deceased loved one. You can ask questions like, what do you miss about —-? If the child wants to talk…it’s always best to let them. When children grieve, the key is communication and consistency. Additional tips: Be Honest But AgeAppropriate: Explain the loss using clear, simple language. Avoid euphemisms like “passed away,” as they can confuse younger kids. Invite Questions: Let children express their thoughts, even if their questions are difficult to answer. It’s OK not to have all the answers. Create Routines: Familiar holiday traditions can offer comfort, but adjust them to reflect the absence of the loved one. Invite children to participate in new rituals to honor their memory. Validate Their Emotions: Let them know it’s OK to cry, laugh, or feel angry. Share your feelings, too, so they see it’s natural to grieve WIB: How do we know when to help a loved one or to back off? JGD: It’s always best to observe body language and to check in with your family members. If your family member does not want to talk about nor engage in any activity about the deceased loved one, respect their space and request. Do not enforce
or impose your ideas upon them. WIB: Do you have other specific suggestions to help get through unscathed, or at least, to survive? JGD: The holidays don’t have to be “perfect.” Focus on what feels nourishing and supportive. Create a Memory Ritual: Light a candle, share stories or make a favorite dish in honor of your loved one. Simplify: If the usual traditions feel overwhelming, scale back. Choose a few meaningful activities instead of trying to do everything. Practice Self-Care: Carve out moments to rest, meditate or enjoy a comforting activity. Set Boundaries: Politely decline invitations or traditions that feel too heavy this year. Find a Support Network: Lean on trusted friends, family or grief support groups to share your feelings. WIB: When is it time to seek professional help? Signs or symptoms? JGD: I seek to normalize the grieving process and death as a part of the life cycle. As such, I believe any person who is navigating the loss or physical transition of a loved one would benefit from grief counseling in particular. And to answer your question from a clinical lens, there are signs or symptoms typically after six to 12 months of the deceased loved one’s passing that might signal the need for professional help. Prolonged inability to function daily. Intense guilt or anger that feels unmanageable. Withdrawal from social interactions or refusal to engage in meaningful activities. Persistent numbness or emotional disconnection. Substance abuse or selfharming behaviors. Physical symptoms like chronic pain, headaches, or insomnia without clear cause. How can a drug regrow teeth? The drug in question targets a protein called USAG-1, which suppresses tooth growth. By blocking the action of this protein, the drug can stimulate the growth of new teeth. This approach has shown promising results in mice and ferrets, leading to an investigation into how it could work for humans. How can Black Americans benefit? Black Americans experience a
disproportionate burden of oral health problems compared to other populations in the United States. This disparity is rooted in various socioeconomic and systemic factors that contribute to limited access to dental care. Untreated dental issues can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only oral health but also overall well-being. Poor oral health has been linked to various systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. These health problems can further diminish the quality of life and contribute to economic hardships. This drug’s potential to regrow teeth could be a game-changer for Black Americans facing tooth loss. Even though we have Black people in office, it doesn't matter if we are not part of the budget. A budget is a statement of our values. The Advent season is an invitation to those of us in the northern hemisphere to wait in darkness for Emmanuel, Godwith-Us. Long nights wrapped in shadow challenge us to embrace a time of reflection and deep rest. Slowing our relentless pace of anxious activity is a political act of resistance to the grind of consumerism, which would have us believe that our value as creatures of the Creator is rooted in production and productivity. God-with-Us is a sacred sign of the innate value of human life,
all human life. Not only those, by age, ability or association, who are deemed of value by the world in which we live. This barren time invites us to soul rest not as an escape but as an opportunity to reorder what is worthy of our prayers, our work, our resources, both material and spiritual. Advent is a fallow and necessary time. Especially because there are signs all around us that the sacredness of human life is not continued in next 2 columns
Advent Invitation...continued a commonly held value. Though I grew up in a rural community where many were struggling financially and certainly inhabited substandard housing, I did not see an unhoused human until I was in middle school and visited a big US city. Now I live in a small Oregon city where unhoused humans number in the thousands. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness State of Homelessness: 2024 Edition, in my county 79 out of every 100,000 people are considered homeless, an increasing number of whom are unsheltered. The lack of safe and affordable housing for humans has touched every corner of the United States. Somehow, we have decided collectively that some humans are worthy of the necessities of survival, and some are not. Our current housing catastrophe is certainly an economic and political failure. It is also a spiritual crisis. At the heart of this dehumanizing reality is the belief that God is not with all of us. That some humans are not valued and are not worthy even of the essential needs to sustain life, let alone well-being and dignity. We observe widespread
and persistent blaming of the poor for their dire circumstances while opportunity and resource hoarding by the wealthy is encouraged and celebrated by our society. Our collective assent to the disregard of human suffering and basic support of human life calls us all to account in this Season of Waiting. I see signs of hope and am encouraged by the creativity of local efforts in my community such as Square One Villages and Community Supported Shelters. These impactful communitybased movements remind me that the power of collective action for mutual aid and care is possible. The Holy One has not abandoned us. In this season, oh that we might still ourselves to remember and know again that the inherent dignity and worth of each person is an indelible mark from a Creator who will not rest until all creation thrives. A grounding spiritual practice in this season is to rest our bodies and renew our souls. To understand anew that human worth is not something to be earned but is innate and sacred. That I need only look into the face of my neighbor to meet Christ, Emmanuel, God-with-Us.

2024 in Review: 7 Questions for Former Ranking Member Maxine Waters Sounds California/National Alarm on 18% Increase in Homelessness Tax loopholes cost California and its cities $107 billion but Assemblymember Chris Holden Edward Henderson | California Black Media
Hon. Chris Holden In 2012, Assemblymember Chris Holden was first elected to the California State Assembly representing the 41st District in the San Gabriel Valley. He was re-elected to that position for the following four terms. While in office, Holden championed efforts to improve education outcomes for students and advocated for social and racial justice. Legislation he wrote or sponsored also focused on, innovation in transportation, protecting developmental disability service providers and improving public health, more broadly. Holden, a graduate of San Diego State University, lives in Pasadena with his wife, Melanie, and children Nicholas, Alexander, Austin, Mariah and Noah. Holden is the son of former State Senator and LA City Councilmember Nate Holden. Before he closed out his final year of service in the Assembly, California Black Media (CBM) spoke with Holden. He reflected on his accomplishments this year and his goals moving forward. Looking back at 2024, what stands out to you as your most
important achievement and why? I’m really blessed to be at a particular point right now where I can say that a project I’ve been working on for well over 36 years — the light rail system — made its way into Pasadena from downtown LA. Now it’s making its way through the San Gabriel Valley to Pomona. We didn’t have the money to complete it through from Pomona through Claremont to Montclair. We were able to get the money in this year’s budget. I’m glad that I was able to be a part of the Legislature at that time, to be able to do the hard work to put those resources into place, along with my colleagues. How did your leadership and investments contribute to improving the lives of Black Californians? I’m the first African American to be elected to the legislature from the San Gabriel Valley, representing the 41st Assembly District, where African Americans make up about 7% of the population. For me to have an opportunity to represent a multi-ethnic and diverse district is exciting, but to be able to bring a voice for a lived African American experience from the San Gabriel valley is very important. What frustrated you the most over the last year? I still am frustrated that we aren’t seeing the kind of progress on affordable housing to allow underrepresented communities to be able to afford to live in the community that they grew continued in next 2 columns

World News WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, released this statement following the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Annual Homelessness Assessment Report estimating that the United States saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness in 2024, driven by the worsening affordable housing crisis. “I am deeply disappointed to learn that more than 770,000 people are experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States – an alarming increase of 120,000 since 2023. Sadly, we know exactly how we got here. For decades, a lack of investment in affordable housing has forced countless families out of their homes and onto the streets. This is a crisis in every county and city across America, whether they be rural, urban, or suburban communities. “During the height of the pandemic, Committee Democrats secured an unprecedented federal eviction moratorium through the CARES Act and over $60 billion in historic housing investments through the American Rescue Plan Act and other pandemic relief legislation. Unfortunately, these funds have now run out, leaving many families with less support even as the affordable housing crisis rages on. Despite rising homelessness, the report shows an 8% decrease in veteran homelessness, thanks to Congress’ allocation of $73 million to support veterans in need. This is proof of what we can get done when we invest in
evidence-based solutions. “Unfortunately, after spending two years trying to defund critical housing programs, Republicans are set to kick off the next Congress by cutting taxes for the rich – likely at the expense of housing and other critical programs. Meanwhile, co-President Elon Musk, who has relentlessly dehumanized people experiencing homelessness, is already plotting to slash government programs through the incoming Department of Government Efficiency initiative, with housing likely at the top of the list. As usual, Republicans have spent more time blaming people experiencing homelessness than working to find solutions. Democrats, however, have real solutions. “That’s why I am calling on Congress to immediately pass my housing bills, including the ‘Housing Crisis Response Act,’ the ‘Ending Homelessness Act,’ and the ‘Downpayment Toward Equity Act.’ Together, these bills would create nearly 1.4 million affordable homes, reduce housing costs, end homelessness, and revive the dream of homeownership for all. Without stable and affordable housing, children cannot thrive, families are forced to choose between food on the table and a roof over their heads, and communities suffer. Democrats in Congress are ready to return to Washington to get these bills across the finish line as quickly as possible. New research is shedding new insight into how harmful compounds contained in plastic may disrupt hormone function and women’s health. Approximately 80 percent of reproductive-aged women have uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous tumors that form in the uterus, but the source is typically unknown Scientists have long assumed that genetics, hormones, food, and major life stressors all have a role. According to new research from Northwestern University, substances we are exposed to in our daily lives may also contribute to the formation of uterine fibroids in many women. According to the paper, these compounds are found in plastics used in food packaging, medical products (such as IV bags), and cosmetics, alter the endocrine function, and can contribute to the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors such as uterine fibroids. Despite the fact that these chemicals are hazardous and can cause direct injury to human tissue when consumed or inhaled, they are legal in the United States and are widely utilized. Previous studies have found a link between endocrinedisrupting chemicals and uterine fibroids, as well as other hormone-sensitive health issues such as breast cancer and endometriosis. However, this study, published in the Proceedings of the

National Academy of Sciences, is one of the first to show how these pollutants disrupt hormone function. The researchers tested the level of DEHP, the most commonly used endocrine-disrupting phthalate, in the urine of 712 individuals for the study. According to the paper, we are regularly exposed to DEHP through medical items, food, beverages, and airborne dust. The researchers discovered that those who had higher amounts of DEHP traces in their urine were more likely to have a symptomatic uterine fibroid. Each 10% increase in phthalate levels was associated with a 6% increase in the risk of fibroid formation. The researchers also investigated whether phthalates affect fibroid growth by exposing cells from some of the patients’ fibroid tumors to different types of phthalate metabolites or molecules left behind after phthalates are metabolized in the body. They discovered that high phthalate levels stimulated a hormone pathway that enabled fibroid cells to survive and grow. What We Know About Endocrine Disruptors and Our Health Previous studies have linked endocrine-disrupting chemicals to uterine fibroids, leading to the conclusion that the higher the phthalate concentration in the body, the greater the risk of uterine fibroids. Scientists have believed that phthalates promote fibroid cell growth by mimicking or preventing the production of estrogen and progesterone, two chemicals that increase fibroid growth during people’s reproductive years, but evidence has been lacking. These new findings provide some light on how environmental pollutants alter certain of our hormonal processes and lead to the development of uterine fibroids and other reproductive health issues. Because the development and growth of uterine fibroids are poorly understood, this new study is crucial in revealing how a woman’s environmental exposures may raise her risk for uterine fibroids. Unfortunately, while routinely used chemicals are assessed for toxicity, their propensity to disrupt endocrine function is not thoroughly investigated, mostly because the health implications can be difficult to assess. The effects aren’t usually dose-related, and sometimes large effects are noticed at low or high levels, and the effects of endocrine disruptors aren’t
always obvious. Should We Stay Away from Specific Products? It’s something to think about. Some scientists advise against using plastic bottles and food packaging; instead, use glass containers whenever possible and avoid polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-containing products that include phthalates. Because phthalates are ubiquitous, it is more difficult to avoid them totally. These chemicals are found in hundreds of items, yet in most cases, they are not stated on the product packaging labels. Check the components of any foods, makeup, or home products you use. Look for phthalatefree labels on microwave-safe containers, toys, and consumer products. Because phthalates are included in so many medical goods, it may be worth asking your healthcare practitioner whether they have any phthalatefree options. This study is an important step in laying the groundwork for future research into how phthalate exposure affects health and illness risk, allowing women to advocate for safer products.

2024 in Review: 7 Questions for Former Assemblymember Chris Holden...continued up in. California has become so expensive and finding the techniques and the ability to create affordability and more housing is a struggle. What inspired you the most over the last year? There has been a lot of movement around reparations through community engagement. Dr. Shirley Weber put forth the bill to establish a reparations task force and that task force met for a number of years. Two members of our caucus served on it, Sen. Steven Bradford and Assemblymember Reggie JonesSawyer. A thousand-page report and a hundred recommendations or more came out of that. And now we’re in the process of finding ways to implement some of those recommendations. It’s going to be a longer process, but I’m hopeful because California, once again, is on the front end of taking on a really challenging issue. What is one lesson you learned in 2024 that will inform your decision-making next year? Always be mindful how quickly the winds can change. We’ve gone from 10 years of having budget surpluses to this year having a $45 billion deficit. Being able to go from having resources that you can put in a
budget to address some of the community’s needs to this year — not having the ability to do as much of that. We must always be mindful of the fact that in public policy, you have to be mindful of how to prepare for times that may not be as fruitful. In one word, what is the biggest challenge Black Californians face? Inequality. What is the goal you want to achieve most in 2025? Well, I won’t be in the legislature in 2025, but I love public policy. I’d like to find myself in a position where I’m continuing to have an influence on how public policy is shaped and formed. Term limits have a way of weeding out a lot of institutional knowledge. And so, I’d like to be in a position where priorities I stood for don’t get lost in the public discourse in terms of helping to shape some of the things. I would have loved to have been able to continue on as a legislator, if I had more time on the board. But I’m just looking forward to being a vital voice going into next year in a different role. It will also be an opportunity to lay a foundation to take another run, possibly for a seat on the LA County Board of Supervisors in 2028.

Jay King, president of CEO if the California Black Chamber of Commerce Grammy Award winning singer and record label executive, Jay King, was elected CEO/ President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) in June of 2019. The CBCC is the largest African American nonprofit business organization, representing thousands of small and emerging businesses, affiliates and chambers of commerce throughout California. African American businessmen and women. California Black Media (CBM) spoke with King recently. He reflected on the Chamber’s accomplishments, disappointments, lessons learned this year and goals moving forward. Looking back at 2024, what stands out to you as your most important achievement and why? Making the voice of micro and mini-micro businesses loud, forcing policymakers and other decisionmakers across the state to start paying attention to them. With legislation in place now — AB 1574 and AB 2019 – that mandates that the state and agencies affiliated with the state extend opportunities to micro and mini business owners and give them a chance to participate in government contracting in a real way. How did your leadership and investments contribute to improving the lives of Black Californians? I really want to contribute to the world and the state of Black businesses because of the systemic inequities in the past. Small business, micro businesses and mini businesses are too often overlooked. I think it would be egotistical to believe that I make any significant impact on my own. Whether it’ s the Asian Chamber, Hispanic Chamber and other
organizations that are fighting the same fight. I think it’ s a collective, so I’ m proud to be part of the collective. What frustrated you the most over the last year? We say we want to give access to capital to small businesses, and yet we continue to create barriers that deny them access to capital. And even if we get them access to capital, we don’ t create pathways for that success — whether it’ s through education or resources, or through language – providing support in a language that they understand because, maybe, they’ re from another country Or, we don’t even provide cultural-specific resources for people who are from this country. We ignore and negate the systemic racism, bigotry, prejudice, and bias that African American and other ethnic businesspeople and communities have experienced. What inspired you the most over the last year? Watching some of the small business owners that we worked with — these micro businesses — and seeing the potential and the power that is in front of us. If we equip them the right way, if we train them the right way, if we develop them the right way,
they can not only flourish, but they can scale and start hiring people in their communities. What is one lesson you learned in 2024 that will inform your decision-making next year? We have to fight for Black businessowners, but they also have to be prepared. Just because we want to push them through, because we want them to have a contract, we have to be very careful about who we get in the game, and make sure that they’ re ready. Because if they’ re not, it affects us all down the line. In one word, what is the biggest challenge Black Californians face? Self-belief. I think we have been conditioned on victimization and victimhood. We think that if we don’ t get the help we need that we will falter. We must have real belief that we have made it this far despite every barrier, every obstacle, every disillusionment that has ever come our way. And we are still standing. What is the goal you want to achieve most in 2025? I want to change the trajectory of micro and mini business owners.

Children are more vulnerable than adults to the effects of cold weather. The Head Start Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center developed these tips to help families and staff keep children safe, healthy, and warm in the winter. Bundle up! Children are at greater risk for frostbite than adults. The best way to prevent frostbite is to make sure children dress warmly and don’t spend too much time outside in extreme weather. Dress children in layers of warm clothing. If the top layer gets wet, they will still have a dry layer underneath. Tuck scarves inside coats and jackets to prevent them from becoming strangulation hazards. Car seats and winter coats don’t mix. Bulky coats can compress in a crash and create a loose car seat harness. Instead, lay the jacket or a blanket over the children once you’ve safely strapped them into their car seat. Keeping Healthy Outdoors There’s no set amount of time for children to play outside safely when the weather is cold. Use your best judgment. When the cold becomes unpleasant, it’s time to go inside. If you are unsure if weather conditions are safe for outdoor
play, check the Child Care Weather Watch Chart. Have children come indoors periodically to prevent hypothermia or frostbite. A temperature of 0 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 15 mph creates a wind chill temperature of -19 F. Under these conditions, frostbite can occur in just 30 minutes. Frostnip is an early warning sign of frostbite. The skin may feel numb or tingly or appear red (on lighter skin). To prevent frostbite, check that mittens and socks are dry and warm. Frostbite occurs mostly on fingers, toes, ears, noses, and cheeks. The affected area becomes very cold, firm, and, depending on the color of the skin, turns white, yellowish-gray, or gray. Even though it’s cold outside, it’s important to use sunscreen and stay hydrated. Children are more likely than adults to become dehydrated. Staying Safe Indoors and in Vehicles Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and portable space heaters. Set up a 3-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space continued in next 2 columns
heaters. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room. Test smoke alarms at least once a month. Vent all fuel-burning equipment to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Install and maintain CO alarms. Keep alarms at least 15 feet away from fuel-burning appliances. If you need to warm up your vehicle, remove it from the garage as soon as you start it to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. Don’t leave a vehicle running inside a garage. If vehicles are parked outside, check to make sure the tailpipe is not blocked with snow, which can also cause problems with CO. Sleeping Safely in Any Season Keep babies’ cribs free of stuffed animals and blankets. A firm mattress covered with a tight-fitting crib sheet is all that an infant needs to sleep safely. If you are worried about keeping babies warm, dress
them in a wearable blanket, also known as a sleep sack.

Infection Control Cold weather does not cause colds or flu. However, viruses that cause a cold and the flu are more common in the winter when children spend more time indoors. Keeping everyone’s hands clean is one of the most important ways to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Wash hands with soap and clean running water and rub them together for at least 20 seconds. Teach children to cough or sneeze into their upper sleeve or elbow, not their hands. Adults should model this behavior. Review program policies on handwashing; cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting; and excluding children and caregivers who are sick. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that all children 6 months and older receive the seasonal flu vaccine every year. All early care and education program staff should also get vaccinated for the flu.

Starting July 1, 2025, companies must get clear consent before charging customers after a free trial ends, send annual reminders about recurring charges, and make cancellation just as simple as signing up. Customers will receive advance notice of any price changes, allowing time to decide whether to continue the subscription.
Fairer deals for restaurants and consumers: SB 1490 by Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) ensures food delivery platforms can’t misrepresent fees or keep a restaurant on their app without permission. It also requires a straightforward way for a restaurant to be removed from the platform if they choose.
