Kamille, the 3-year-old girl who was abducted in Birmingham on Oct. 12, was found inside of a dumpster at a landfill on Tuesday.

Former U.S. Congressman John Conyers (Photo: United States Congress Official Photo / Wikimedia Commons) Former U.S. Congressman John Conyers, whose 15-year fight to pass legislation that would make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a federal holiday, has died. He was 90. The longtime Michigan Democrat represented what is now the state’s 13th Congressional District (which includes parts of western Detroit) for more than 50 years. Conyers resigned in 2017. Conyers was born in Detroit in 1929. He was elected to Congress in 1965 and immediately became a forceful voice in the Civil Rights Movement, co-sponsoring the Voting Rights Act of that same year. Conyers was the first African

American to chair the powerful House Judiciary Committee and helped spearhead the 1994 Violence against Women Act. Conyers and 12 other African American members of the House of Representatives founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971. “We always knew where he stood on issues of equality and civil rights in the fight for the people,” Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who now represents Conyers’ district, tweeted. “Sad to hear of the passing of former Congressman John Conyers,” the Rev. Al Sharpton stated. “He worked with us on many civil rights cases as Chair of the House Judiciary Committee

and helped lead the fight for the Martin Luther King [Jr.] Holiday.” “Most of us from Michigan loved our congressman. He was idolized and was absolutely an icon. Not only was he an icon of the civil rights movement but we looked to him for leadership. This is a massive loss. Mrs. Gloria Roberts I had the opportunity to sit and chat with Mrs. Gloria Roberts about her life, it was based upon the fact that a fifty year memorial for her late husband is being planned. Gloria met her future husband in Melbourne, Florida when he was already in the Air Security police, they were married after she graduated from high school. Their wedding date was October 16 1955, by that time she was attending Bethune Cookman College (an HBCU). Her husband Isiah Roberts was transferred to Japan, but she remained in college and finished out the year, shortly afterwards she joined him in Japan where she

resided for two years. By the time they returned to Patrick Air Force Base, FL, the family had grown, with the birth of their son Gary. The family would remain stateside, except for temporary duties for Tech Sgt. Roberts. The family arrived at George AFB, Victorville in 1965, their family had once again increased with two daughters, Terri and Windsor. They were an idealic military family residing on the base, and life was good. Then on the night of April 17, 1969, tragedy struck; the idealic life they had shared was shattered when the office of security police received a telephone call

As a matter of fact; Sgt Roberts knew the family, so he took the call and went with another officer to check out the complaint. As they were leaving the residence, shots rang out. Tech Sgt. Roberts was shot at least five times in the back. The only reason he went on the call was because he knew the airman involved, they had worked together. The aftermath: I asked Mrs. Roberts some deep questions about this period in her life, when the life she was living was shattered in a moment. What was it like as a Believer dealing with

forgiveness towards this individual. She answered truthfully, forgiveness came slowly, finally her youngest daughter, Windsor, said:” I can forgive him”. Mrs. Roberts stated that the fact the accused was sentenced to 7 years to life, but only served seven years at Fort Leavensworth Federal prison was very difficult to deal with. In retrospect, as she looks back there is the undeniable fact that divine intervention carried her and the children through those early years. Though the hurdles were (continued on page 2)

Kamille, the 3-year-old girl who was abducted in Birmingham on Oct. 12, was found inside of a dumpster at a landfill on Tuesday. During a candlelight vigil for the little girl in downtown Birmingham, Smith said Kamille was able to accomplish something many couldn’t do in a lifetime. “A 3-year-old little girl has changed the landscape of the city of Birmingham,” the chief said. “She made us stop and check ourselves to see if we are doing everything we can to keep our children safe from harm; check to see if we are truly the village we promised to be; check to see if we live up to the expectations of tomorrow and watching our children today the way they need to.” The child, known as “Cupcake” to relatives, vanished while outside a birthday party in the Tom Brown Village housing community. Smith said the city was a little different before Kamille’s abduction. “Ten days ago, I felt that we were a very different city,” the chief said. “Maybe we were a little bit too carefree; maybe there is more we could have done to watch over this little child. But today we’ve come face to face with the hurt, the pain and loss of a beautiful little spirit. Let us not take this moment for granted; let us not take these lessons of devastation for granted.” One way the city has changed is that citizens should “never let our children out of our sights,” Smith said. “Let our eyes be eyes of caring, of passion, of love and compassion for children,” he said. “Let your concerns be heard and

watch over your neighbors and your neighbor’s children and we will be a better city.” The program began beneath a bright sun and in a slight breeze with Mayor Randall Woodfin saying, “we are all Kamille’s family” and introducing the speakers. William Parker, who was elected by his colleagues as the new Birmingham City Council President on Tuesday, was the first to speak. “We are truly hurting as a family, as a city; these are tough times but we are going to pull through this,” Parker said. “It is going to take all of us collectively working together to make sure we support the family.” Parker was followed by Smith who said his officers wanted nothing more than to bring Kamille home safely and “worked endlessly to do that . . .I can’t imagine the pain of the family of Kamille but I want them to know that we as a family stand with them.” On Tuesday, Smith said police were obtaining murder warrants against two people previously identified as persons of interest in the case, 39-year-old Patrick Devone Stallworth and his 29year-old girlfriend, Derick Irisha Brown. Lawyers for both have said they are innocent. Wednesday’s vigil was a diverse gathering of people from across the Birmingham metro area including various faith-based leaders that included Rev. Julia Conrady, of Unitarian Universal Church of Birmingham; Minister Ashfaq Taufique, of the Birmingham Islamic Society; Rabbi Adam Wright, of Temple Emanu-El and Pastor Mike McClure, Jr. of the Rock Church. SBVC football team breaks 10 records in single game against Santa Ana College

After a 2018 season that saw the San Bernardino Valley College football team rewrite the record books, the 2019 team picked up right where the 2018 team left off breaking 10 records in a single night. The Wolverines took on Santa Ana College, defeating the Dons 80-48 in the SBVC Stadium. Quarterback Jeremy Moussa completed 38 passes for 636 yards and seven touchdowns as the Wolverines beat the Dons 8048 Saturday night at SBVC Stadium. Moussa threw passes to 10 different players, with six different receivers scoring touchdowns. The 636 yards surpassed the school record for passing yards in a game, previously set at 495 yards in 1991 by Richard Robles. Moussa's seven touchdown passes also ties Armando Herrera for most in a single game, which Herrera completed twice in 2018. And the 38 completions also set a new mark, besting Jamie Sander's 1994 mark of 33. But it wasn't just the Jeremy Moussa show Saturday night. Running back Darrell Turner Jr. scored three times, gaining 106 yards on eight carries on the night. In all, the Wolverines ran 90 plays, gaining 792 yards - itself

Just across the street from the museum, which is housed in the historic Grimke School building on Vermont Avenue North West, is a bronze memorial, a statue of three soldiers standing guard. The statue is surrounded by a wall with the carvings of 209,145 names of those who served among the United States Colored Troops. That museum and memorial fixtures in the U Street community for the past 21 years - are about to undergo a $45 million expansion project that will accomplish the second purpose for which the museum was built. expected to create an economic boom in the once depressed area as people come from across the nation to visit the historic spot. "We wanted to find a way to get tourism into this community. We get 20 million tourists in the city every year," said Smith, a former Ward 1 councilman, who envisioned and founded the museum in 1992. "They spend $6 - $10 billion dollars every year Downtown. So it's pretty easy if we can find a way to get them here and spend some of that money up here in this neighborhood," he said. D. C. "You all know that we started this African American Civil War Museum for two purposes - one was to correct a great wrong in history, which pretty much ignored the contributions of African-American soldiers ending slavery and keeping America united under one flag," Dr. Frank Smith, executive director and founder of the

African American Civil War Museum, told a packed house in D.C.'s historic Shaw neighborhood Oct. 17. Smith continued the brief history lesson before the rapt audience: "When the Civil War started, African-Americans had no pathway to citizenship in the United States. We were defined in the Constitution as being chattel slaves. And every court decision from that point up to the Civil War reinforced our position and our status in society. San Bernardino – The following is a statement by Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes relating to the impact of the Public Safety Power Shutoff on the communities of the 47th Assembly District, specifically Rialto, Fontana and San Bernardino: “Over the weekend several thousand Southern California Edison customers in my district were impacted by the power shutoffs. In the coming days due the fire danger posed by increasing winds potentially more customers could be impacted in the region. As a member of the Assembly Utilities Committee I have been engaged in reviewing efforts by utilities, state and local government and other stakeholders to reduce the fire danger associated with utility infrastructure. Shutting down the power supply to at-risk areas during extreme weather can be a prudent strategy to prevent catastrophic destruction and even death from potential fires.

However, I am deeply concerned with the implementation of the power shut-offs in our region and around the state. The decision to shut off power to residential and business customers should be a strategic decision that is targeted as specifically as possible to limit unnecessary impacts. Unfortunately, based on the feedback I am receiving from constituents in my district these shutoffs appear to be applied overly broad and without sufficient warning to residential and business customers whose lives and businesses are severely disrupted by these shutoffs. I am calling on Southern California Edison to work with local residents and businesses to limit unnecessary impacts from these shut-offs and provide assistance to those that have had their lives and businesses negatively impacted by these shutoffs. While it may be reasonable to shut off power in extreme weather conditions it is not reasonable that utility customers should have to suffer the costs related to spoiled food and lost business. The current circumstances are a stark reminder that the utilities must invest in grid safety before occurrence of severe weather events as prevention will always remain the most effective option.”

Poetic Justices: Two Black Women Appointed to California Superior Court Judgeships

Gavin Newsom’s 11 new appointees to California superior court judgeships in seven counties. Newsom announced the appointments last Friday, his first batch of Superior Court nominations since becoming governor in January. Eight of the 11 appointees are women. All of them are filling vacancies left open by retired

justices. Black women only make up around 5 percent of California’s more than 1,500 trial court judges. And only 19 out of the state’s 58 counties have ever had Black women superior court justices. “Thus in 39 counties, no African-American woman’s experiences have brought life to the law,” writes Alameda County Judge Brenda F. Harbin-Forte in the Daily Journal. Harbin-Forte, who is Black, researches and

writes about the history of African Americans in the state’s judiciary. “Gov. Gavin Newsom follows the hard act of Gov. Jerry Brown,” she added. Former Gov. Brown, Harbin-Forte says, “made many historic appointments and created the most diverse court system in the history of our great state.” One of the two new AfricanAmerican judges, Terrie E. Roberts, 54, lives in Chula Vista. She will now serve as a San Diego County Superior Court Judge. The other, Tricia J. Taylor, 39, who lives in the city of Los Angeles, is joining two others the governor appointed to serve as Los Angeles County Superior Court judges. “Roberts and Taylor’s appointments are significant, said Dezie Woods-Jones, state president of Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA). “These appointments speak volumes. I am extremely pleased and excited that there are two new highly professional and qualified African-American Women judges appointed to the California Superior Court.” Roberts, a former prosecutor and public defender, and Taylor, a former deputy district attorney,

both bring broad experience in private law - as well as public law - to their new roles as justices. Since 2008, Roberts served as a commissioner at the San Diego County Superior Court. Before that, she was deputy district attorney at the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. Roberts has also worked in private practice and served as a deputy public defender in San Diego County. Before becoming deputy D.A. in Los Angeles County, Taylor also worked in private practice and at the Children’s Law Center, a public interest law firm and advocacy group. In California, all of the state’s 58 counties have now voted to have a single superior court in each of their jurisdictions. That county superior court serves as the main trial court for each county. In June 1998, California voters approved Proposition 220, a constitutional ammendment that allowed the counties to fold their municipal and superior courts into one unified county superior court. Annually, county superior court justices earn $213,833 and they serve nearly 34 million people across the state, according to the Judicial Council of California.

(File photo by Stan Lim, The Press Enterprise/SCNG) Despite damning state and local audits revealing questionable hiring practices at the embattled West Valley Water District in Rialto, the agency continues to employ a consultant the government found to have operated a federal grant scam. Under scrutiny is the district’s contract with M.H.M. and Associates, a Glendora-based grant-writing company headed by CEO Luvina Beckley-Knight. The district entered into a one-year, $25,000 contract with M.H.M. in August 2018 to create a federal grant program. Another one-year contract was awarded in June for the same amount to implement the program and begin pursuing grants. Beckley-Knight, however, remains suspended from “all federal procurement and nonprocurement transactions” because the Corporation for National and Community Service Office of Inspector General

concluded in a June 2016 report that she defrauded the government by funneling federal grant money from a nonprofit shell corporation she created into her for-profit M.H.M. and Associates. On Oct. 17, the district’s Board of Directors was to consider a new contract with M.H.M. for grant- and loan-writing services, not to exceed $50,000 annually without board approval. But the item was pulled from the meeting agenda after the Southern California News Group began inquiring about M.H.M. and Beckley-Knight. Nine other proposed contracts were withdrawn from the agenda as well because the board did not want to consider anything potentially controversial before the Nov. 5 election, board President Mike Taylor said. for reelection, and fierce campaigning is underway to determine future control of the board. Contract termination Water district General Manager Clarence Mansell Jr. said that, in light of the recent scrutiny of Beckley-Knight’s federal suspension, which remains in effect until Oct. 31, the district will send a 30-day notice of its intent to terminate her existing contract. Mansell said Beckley-Knight has not applied for any grants or loans on behalf of the district under her existing contract. West Valley serves about 82,000 customers in Bloomington, Colton, Fontana, Rialto, unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County, and Jurupa Valley in Riverside County. “She is strictly advisory to staff, provides research, writing, guidance for relationship building in the grant-writing community,” Mansell said. “It’s a new effort that takes a year or two to show results. Again, our intention is to control everything, but utilize her knowledge, skills and relationships to build our program.” Beckley-Knight, 55, of Riverside, said her suspension means federal agencies are prohibited from soliciting grant contracts from her or awarding her new contracts in excess of $35,000. However, she said it doesn’t prevent her from continuing to write grants for others. “I’ve never stopped writing grants,” she said. Beckley-Knight said one of her most recent grant proposals was on behalf of the West Valley Water District, which is pursuing federal funding from the Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSmart program to improve water conservation. Federal debarment In October 2016, the CNCS suspended Beckley-Knight for three years after determining she set up a shell corporation called TCU Community Services, an online nonprofit, to secure more than $20,000 in federal grant money. The money was then funneled to Beckley-Knight’s forprofit M.H.M. and Associates by having M.H.M.’s management services inserted as an item in every TCU grant budget, according to a 37-page Office of Inspector General report. “Ms. Beckley-Knight also inserted personal acquaintances into the grant budget as consultants to TCU, to be paid

and without TCU having conducted a cost or price analysis for the services,” according to the report, dated June 21, 2016. “Ms. BeckleyKnight submitted fraudulent claims to the government because M.H.M. and TCU failed to execute the work for the approved grant project, yet drew down funds for its support.” The government awarded TCU a grant for a volunteer program for retired persons and senior citizens in Conyers, Georgia, but Beckley-Knight and her employees did not perform any substantive work under the grant. TCU failed to recruit volunteers and submitted “incomprehensible reports attempting to demonstrate TCU was working on a volunteer recruitment plan.” The grant money, however, was used to pay TCU staff members without evidence showing they completed any work, according to the report. Beckley-Knight also was found to have made false statements by intentionally misleading the federal government in TCU’s grant application, stating the firm had established funds and resources while failing to disclose the relationship between M.H.M. and TCU, as well as other parties and entities “commonly controlled by Beckley-Knight, thus leading to Ms. BeckleyKnight’s financial gain,” according to the report. The OIG’s office declined to comment, and CNCS did not respond to repeated telephone calls and emails seeking information. Problems in Rialto Beckley-Knight also has performed grant writing and administration in the city of Rialto. The city, however, terminated its contract with M.H.M. and Associates in May 2017, seven months after Beckley-Knight’s federal suspension. Aside from her federal debarment, Beckley-Knight was accused by the city of breach of contract for, among other things, sloppy record-keeping and failing to pay various community-based organizations more than $45,000 that the city administered funds to, including Big Brother and Big Sisters of the Inland Empire and the Young Visionaries Youth Leadership Academy, according to city records obtained by the Southern California News Group via a public records request. “The city finds that M.H.M. has neglected and refused to provide services in compliance with the (continued in next 2 columns)

New partnership emerges A year after M.H.M.’s debacle in Rialto, Beckley-Knight emerged again in the city — in May 2018 — as a principal in a new partnership. She and Vincent McCoy, executive director of Inland Empire Small Business Development Center, formed a new company called Luvicent, according to records filed with the San Bernardino County Recorder’s Office. A fictitious business name filing on May 24, 2018, lists the registrants as McCoy and Beckley-Knight, who then just used the surname Beckley. But less than a month later, a second fictitious business name for Luvicent was filed with the county listing McCoy as the sole registrant. Beckley-Knight said she serves as an adviser for the company but has no management responsibilities. “I encouraged Vincent McCoy to start Luvicent LLC, of which he added me as an officer. After I disclosed to him my debarment,

he removed me from the company,” Beckley-Knight said in an email, adding that McCoy later switched Luvicent from a limited liability company to a corporation. Reached by telephone, McCoy also said Beckley-Knight worked in strictly an advisory capacity for Luvicent, even though the company name is a hybrid of both their first names. “I am not a front man” for Beckley-Knight, McCoy said. But Beckley-Knight’s affiliation with Luvicent and her federal suspension aroused so much concern at last week’s Rialto City Council meeting that council members voted 4-1, with Mayor Deborah Robertson dissenting, to terminate a contract with IBM for a data project on which Luvicent was a subcontractor. “I have some extremely serious concerns about this project. I have some serious concerns about the transparency of it,” Councilman Ed Scott said. “I have some serious concerns about the bidding process that took place. Marin Fire Department Donates Ambulance to Haiti By Godfrey Lee

(Photo by: Godfrey Lee A dinner was held on Oct. 19 in appreciation for the Ross Valley Paramedic Authority — which recently donated a retired ambulance to be used in Haiti for emergency care. The donation came as a collaboration with several other Marin County Fire Departments. The dinner was held at The Caribbean Spices, a Haitian restaurant on 819 4th Street in San Rafael. Jim Thelusma, a musician who lives in Marin, hosted the event and performed the music. For six months, Thelusma met and planned with the Marin Central Fire Department — which voted unanimously to donate one of their fully loaded ambulances to Haiti. Two other people who were influential in obtaining the ambulance are Sophis Dorsainvil, a resident of Oakland and manager of SophisMusic, and Claude Joseph, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of Connecticut. Joseph is also the founder of Those Angels, Inc., whose mission is “to build schools and

to support the educational, cultural and social development of Haitian communities in Haiti and in the U.S.” Matthew Cobb, Battalion Chief of the Central Marin Fire Dept. in Corte Madera, accepted a plaque appreciating the Ross Valley Paramedic Authority for their outstanding contribution for hope for Haiti 2019. The ambulance was on display in front of the restaurant, and everyone attending the dinner took photos in front of it. Later on that night, the ambulance was taken to be stored in San Francisco for two month, while it awaits to be airlifted to Haiti by the United States Air Force . This bill was introduced by Representative Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) and passed by a voice vote. The Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commemorative Coin Act (H.R. 2423), a bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, giving women in the United States the right to vote. This bill was

introduced by Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and passed by a voice vote. The Coordinating Oversight, Upgrading and Innovating Technology, and Examiner Reform Act (HR 2514), bipartisan legislation that closes loopholes in the Bank Secrecy Act, increases penalties for those who break the law, and helps provide financial institutions with new tools to fulfill their obligations under the law. This bill was introduced by Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) and Representative Steve Stivers (R-OH), and passed by a voice vote. The Financial Inclusion in Banking Act (H.R. 4067), a bill which requires the Consumer Bureau to study how to better address the needs of underbanked, unbanked and underserved communities. This bill was introduced by Representative David Scott (DGA) and passed by a voice vote. The Equity Crowdfunding Act (H.R. 4860), a bill to subject crowdfunding vehicles to the jurisdiction of the Securities and Exchange Commission. This bill was introduced by Representative Patrick McHenry (D-NC), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services, and Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, and passed by a voice vote

The African American Civil War Museum will move out of its current building into a second much larger building next door. The 133,000 square foot project will include 12,000 feet for the world headquarters of architectural giant Torti Gallas, which will set up office with more than 100 employees and partners in the building that the museum is vacating. Torti Gallas also is the architectural firm behind the entire project. There will be approximately 70 housing units with 20 percent of them at "below market" price, according to Bowser, who said affordable housing in the area had been among her chief concerns as she established a long-term vision projecting 50-100 years. The new influx of Torti Gallas employees, construction workers, and other retail employees into the neighborhood; plus the tourist draw to the newly renovated museum and new neighborhood residents are expected to bring the economic boom. Among those applauding in the audience was Virginia Ali, co-founder of the historic Ben's Chili Bowl restaurant right down the street. Adding to the historicity of the project, Dr. Smith said a statue of President Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation will be erected in front of the museum, looking across the street at the monument. "It'll be the only one in the nation's capital," he said, awarding the first heavy replica of the statue to Mayor Bowser. John Torti, president of Torti Gallas, said he not only looks

"When I first started working up here, I, as a councilmember, people were scared to walk around up here," he said. He said nearby Howard University "started busing the kids back and forth to the dormitories. They were scared to let them walk around in the street. People need to have a place to live where they can walk through the community; where they can go to school. So, I'm not apologetic about that. We have to fight to make our communities better. We all want to live in better communities. We just have to fight to stay there. That's the only way we're going to progress in America." Responding to Smith, current Ward I Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, having worked on the project for 15 years, described, in part, how the gentrification issue will be dealt with. "Dr. Smith talked about a phenomenon of gentrification here in this neighborhood. And one of the things that we have to keep doing in areas that are becoming gentrified is ensure that we solidify the history and the memories of things that were here and build things that acknowledge the AfricanAmerican community," Nadeau said. While there have been advancements in treatment to different diseases, people of color and those with low income are not given access to said treatments. The organization not only trains patients, but physicians as well; they inform how a patient’s living conditions, methods of travel, and type of insurance are factors that could stifle their access to proper care. When asked about the condition of his son, Shareef, O’Neal reassured that he is doing well since his open-heart surgery last year. Shareef was diagnosed with an anomalous coronary artery, a condition that causes an artery to grow in the wrong place. “He had a heart condition when he was younger, they called it “boom boom.” So, we fixed it,” O’Neal said. “He was playing one

day, he said he said he had another episode of the boom boom so I sent to UCLA medical, they found something was wrong … we talked about the options and he wanted to continue to play, so he went through the surgery and he’s fine now.” During the gala, ABC honored the Sanofi Genzyme-Regeneron Aliance, UCLA professor and cardiologist Karol E. Watson, MD, PhD, Caribbean Foundation Heart Institute President B. Lou Yeboah Ain't that 'bout a pickle! The point being that a dog is no more revolted by its own vomit than a fool by his own folly; they both go back to that which is vile and disgusting. Why? Because the dog doesn’t have any sense and neither does the fool. The point Solomon makes is simple: Fools keep on returning to their dirty old habits, no matter how disgusting they are. [Proverbs 26:11]. I urge you though, to hear the warning of the Lord to a lame man that He healed, “Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee” [John 5:14]. I tell you, it’s time to stop going around and around the "mountain" in your life and be the "overcomer" God has created you to be. Choose to “put off your old self” and “put on the new self, created after the likeness of God ...” [Ephesians 4:22, 24].

Granted, so many times people, not knowing any better, just live the way they have always lived… suffering from the outcome of broken lives and wounded souls. Overwhelmed by the sins of their past and the sins committed against them. The truth is though, you do not have to be broken anymore! You don’t have to be overcome by those sins that have so easily ensnared you. Instead you can be the overcomer God wants you to be. I assure you: If you would say to your mountain that continue to ensare you, "Be lifted up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will happen, it will be done for you. Can you believe today? Are you ready to be an overcomer? I'm telling you, you don't have to go around that mountain anymore. You don't have to continue in sin. Whatever the mountain is today is your day to cast it into the sea. If only you would face your mountain by faith in the name of Jesus and declare, "Get behind me, Satan!" It is finish! Kanye West released his much-anticipated “Jesus is King” album about 12 hours later than he said he would. West had previously confirmed it would drop at midnight, but he took to Twitter at 1 a.m. Friday to let his fans the album is still on the way, and that his team is working on fixing a few mixes. The “Jesus is King” album had been delayed before; its release was postponed in September. USA Today reports that West asked the people who worked on “Jesus is King” album not to have premarital sex. The “Jesus is King” album is West’s first gospel album. He created a documentary film that is playing at select IMAX theaters across the country. Legislating Injustice Amanda Sheldon National Disaster and Refugee Ministries, Wider Church Ministries Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. (Isaiah 10:1-2, NIV) In the Refugee Quiz that I share with churches, one of my favorite questions is, “Under which President were the most refugees resettled to the U.S.?” Answer: Ronald Reagan, who oversaw the admission of over

200,000 resettled refugees in one year and signed the U.S. Refugee Act of 1980. Folks in your church might have stories and connections to some of the refugees who came to the U.S. that year, over half from Asian countries. Or maybe that story is about you and your family. The film depicts a special Sunday Service that took place in the Roden Crater, the neverbefore-seen installation from renowned artist James Turrell, in Arizona. During the film, viewers are able to see, hear, and feel West’s famed Sunday Service come to life. The film was divided by bible verses with a song to accompany it and visuals of Turrell’s creation. Those verses seemed to shed light into West’s increased expression of the gospel. Although a lot of people are skeptical, this expression of gospel is nothing new to Kanye West. In 2004, his fourth single “Jesus Walks” on his debut album “College Dropout,”

featured a sample of “Walk with Me” as performed by the ARC choir. In his seventh studio album “The Life of Pablo,” his opening song “Ultralight Beam” featured gospel artist Kirk Franklin and self-proclaimed Christian rapper, Chance the Rapper. If you listen closely, in the film you may hear snippets of this song. West seems as though he has finally found a balance between music, his personal, and spiritual life. Legislating Injustice...continued Determination for the number of refugees who can be resettled to the U.S. in FY20 at just 18,000 individuals—the lowest number ever— and a not-so-veiled attempt to gut the U.S. resettlement system from the inside out. Organizations that have been welcoming refugees for decades have to lay off qualified caseworkers and lose valuable volunteers, and the network of resettlement sites is weakened for coming years. This says nothing of the devastation for refugee families who have endured not only the horrors of war and persecution but have spent years waiting to be reunited through the long, arduous resettlement pipeline. That same day, the President signed an Executive Order stating his administration “would seek the approval of state and local governments before resettling refugees in their communities.” This does not prevent resettled refugees from moving to whichever community works best for them once they arrive in the U.S. It only gives a platform to hateful and fearful individuals to publicly state how much they don’t want “those people” in their communities.

While most white people in the U.S. were raised to believe that what is legal equals what is just, communities of color have long known that morality and justice are often not the driving factors behind U.S. policymaking. The Bible contains numerous stories of communities creating unjust laws to punish those they perceive as less deserving. In those stories, God repeatedly shows up to remind us that this is wrong. It is wrong to harm the most vulnerable. It is wrong to not love our neighbors as we would love ourselves. Not only is it wrong for us to legislate our human sins of fear, greed, and envy into law, but this makes God angry. God not only weeps for how we have turned away from God’s way to indulge in our own sinful behavior, but God is angry at both our arrogance (“they” are not like us) and at how we harm our own neighbors. Woe to us who are so arrogant to believe that God’s anger will not find us as we make policies to turn aside the needy from justice. And, to seal the deal, The HamilTones, Anthony Hamilton's most famous background singers, serenaded the crowd. Driving home the event's "Step Into Your Power" theme from government to civic responsibility, the event honored Charlotte City Council Member Dimple Tansen Ajmera, the city's first Indian American member and youngest woman elected; Bree Newsome Bass who famously scaled a flagpole to remove the Confederate flag from the South Carolina capitol; and the lady of the city herself, Mayor Vi Lyles, the first Black woman to serve in that role.

During her acceptance speech, Newsome Bass admitted to the crowd that she was scared in her famous moment. "Courage is not about the absence of fear," she said. "Courage is about having something that you believe in that is greater than that fear and having the determination to fight for it." Mayor Lyles made the crowd laugh, opening with "I'm not a millennial though my hair says I am." As she closed out the evening awards, the mother and grandmother referenced the famous Maya Angelou quote about people remembering how you make them feel: "We want you to feel welcomed, honored and respected. That's what this world is all about." And that's exactly what the Salute Her Awards delivered. That led Lambert to believe Beckley-Knight’s involvement at Luvicent was more than just as an adviser, and he said he withdrew from the project after learning of her problems with the federal government. Beckley-Knight said she voluntarily edited grants for McCoy and was voluntarily supporting the IBM project. Mayor Robertson, who according to multiple sources is personal friends with BeckleyKnight, said she opposed killing the IBM contract because she believes the project is a vision for the city’s future. Luvicent’s team, she said, is “solid.” “I sense this really isn’t about the project or the company we have. This is something that’s very focused on one person, one individual,” said Robertson, who did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Other questionable hires The West Valley Water District’s relationship with Beckley-Knight isn’t the only contract drawing scrutiny. Allegations of mismanagement and corrupt practices over the

past three years lodged by water district employees, board members and ratepayers triggered audits by the state Controller’s Office and a private group commissioned by the district While preliminary findings from the controller’s audit are not expected to be released for another month or two, auditors have already discussed problems with district officials. Among them are the district’s failure to put multiple professional contracts out for bid and provide documentation supporting the hiring of new employees for executive positions. (Steve McCrank, The Daily Breeze/SCNG) One of the controversial contracts was approved in August when the district appointed as its new chief financial officer Shamindra “Rickey” Manbahal, who was fired as Hawthorne’s finance director after officials learned he took out a $25,000 loan from the city in October 2014 due to personal financial problems and never reported it. In June 2015, Manbahal acknowledged publicly he helped

cover up the city’s $5.6 million deficit by using millions of dollars in reserve funds to plug huge budget gaps. Rob Katherman, another controversial water district consultant who also serves on the board of the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, was acquitted in 2016 of corruption and embezzlement charges unrelated to his elected position. Rob Katherman Now, Katherman is accused in a bribery lawsuit of lavishing gifts upon West Valley Water District board president Taylor and contributing to Taylor’s and board member Crowther’s political campaigns after receiving a “lucrative contract” facilitated by water district attorney Robert Tafoya, according to the lawsuit. Katherman has denied the allegations. Board member Young said he’s troubled by the consultants hired by fellow directors and water district management. “I find it shocking that my colleagues continue to move to appoint questionable individuals to positions of power at the district,” he said.
