So Much Hate; So Little Tolerance The Democratic Congress is going through a mental crisis at the expense of our normal political process.

Whoever that winner is, he becomes our leader for a set period and will be reelected or not depending on the popularity of his performance. We move on regardless of the outcomes. This is about the prosperity of America and how we do it is up to the voters. We win some. We lose some. But life goes on under the sweetness of democracy and the guarantee of freedom and individual rights. Sadly, since the latest federal election something has happened to our current state of minds. The political sides – Democrats and Republicans- have become intolerable of each other. The Democratic Party seems to be hurt from the 2016 election. They were so sure of victory that the defeat is not being accepted too well. In more peaceful times we would all say, “If you don’t like it, deal with it at the next election.” That type of patience does not seem to be tolerable any more. Democratic party members are becoming venomous in their attitudes and the making of their new
platform. They are so anti-Trump to the point of it being an attitude of resistance, obstruction and hatred of anything that supports our current Administration. TDS – Trump Derangement Syndrome – is real. Families are being broken up or becoming dysfunctional because of the last election. The current Supreme Court nominee selection process is a great example of this. No matter who President Trump selects for nomination, the Democratic wing of Congress is going to oppose it in a fanatical matter. Trump nominee Brett Kavanaugh seems to have an impeccable record since becoming a judge. His over 300 judicial decisions are mainstream and without question illustrate good juris prudence. However, he is a Trump nominee and, thus, must be stopped by any means necessary, according to the Democratic side of Congress. They have not “thrown the kitchen sink” yet but just about every trick, ethical, unethical or even illegal, is being tried. One example is encouraging a mentally challenged individual to place a formal complaint of sexual
assault against nominee Kavanaugh. An alleged act that happened over 36 years ago. She requested discretion about the handling of this. What did they do? They leaked her accusation to the national press and paraded her on national television and gave her a questionable legal representative. They have put an “accuser” who needs medical help and privacy in a position of traumatic exposure. You must feel sorry for her. If that is not enough, they have two more “accusers” who claim either sexual indiscretion or down right gang rape. Yes, they are trying to paint a sleezy, criminal picture on a human being who has played by the rules and has lived a great, impressive American life. Hopefully, the Federal Bureau of Investigation will settle this matter soon. He has already successfully completed six previous FBI investigations covering the same period of time. However, it would not be too surprising if they try some more shenanigans, moral or immoral, legal or illegal to stop this nomination from going through. The Democratic Congress is going through a mental crisis at the expense of our normal political process. Somehow, I hope this will straighten itself out through the next elections that are coming up. Dear Lord, may our voters and elected officials come to their senses and end this hatred and lack of tolerance. It certainly appears that way, supporters argue. And, that argument grew louder when prosecutors in New York announced they were dropping portions of the criminal charges against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The tossed charge — count six — involves allegations made by one of the three accusers in the case, Lucia Evans, who was among the first women to publicly accuse the disgraced movie mogul of sexual assault, according to Page Six. In an exposé published in The New Yorker a year ago, Evans accused Weinstein of forcing her to perform oral sex when they met alone in his Tribeca office in 2004 to discuss her fledgling acting career.

By Harry C. Alford Political rivalry is as much a part of Americana as “Red, White and Blue.” We expect it and cheer on whatever side we support. Throughout the history of our great nation, elections would bring much debate and comparisons as to whose side or positions would be best for the future of our nation. I remember fearing the thought of Barry Goldwater becoming our nation’s president. I thought he was a maniac – a civil rights hating racist and a war monger. Not too long after that 1964 election cycle, I would be depending on Senator Goldwater to save my future. We were in Army basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. From there we would go to Infantry Officer Candidate School in Ft. Benning, Georgia. President Nixon decided that we were going to withdraw from Vietnam and, thus, the Army needed to reduce its manpower. They determined to stop us from going to Officer School (i.e. renege on our contracts with the US Army). It seemed like we were destined to be “screwed.” However, one of our compatriot’s mother worked for Senator Goldwater. He called his mother about the betrayal and she quipped “I will tell Uncle Barry about this.” The next day our contracts were back in force. Barry Goldwater had compassion for us and stepped up to protect us. He wasn’t that evil, “fire breathing” mongrel I thought him to be. The above experience taught me to understand that American politics should be restrained from hatred. There should be tolerance

At the time, Evans was a 21year-old college student. Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon told the judge this week that prosecutors wouldn’t oppose dismissal of the count in the case involving Evans. Weinstein’s lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, told the judge he believed Evans had lied to the grand jury. He also said he believed a police detective had corruptly tried to influence the case by keeping a witness from testifying about her misstatements. “The integrity of these proceedings has been compromised,” he said. Weinstein’s attorneys and prosecutors had been wrangling over the part of the indictment concerning Evans’ allegations over the last few weeks in closed-door meetings and sealed court papers, Page Six reported. In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, about 90-minutes from the Norristown courthouse where Cosby was convicted in April on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, some individuals approached by NNPA Newswire said they believe the entire Weinstein case will ultimately be tossed. The difference between Cosby and Weinstein is quite simple,”
said Walter Cohen of Harrisburg. “Even though they are both rich and famous, Weinstein is white, and Cosby is Black. I know that sounds too simple, but the problem people have today and with this #MeToo movement is reading far too much into things,” Cohen said. Samantha Devers pointed out that Cosby’s accusers were mostly white and the woman he was convicted of was also white. “A Black man, white woman. They had to teach not just Bill Cosby a lesson, but they had to send a message to all Black men — and those who don’t get it better quickly wake up,” said Devers, an African-American woman. Sean Boyd, another Harrisburg resident, said Cosby is paying for the sins of Weinstein and others. “Look, on the day Cosby was sentenced, [Comedian] Louis C.K. did a comeback show and [Filmmaker] Roman Polanski announced a new movie,” Boyd said. Louis C.K. had been embroiled in a sex assault scandal of his own and Polanski famously pled guilty decades ago to charges involving sodomizing a 13-year-old girl. Polanski fled the country and has never served time, yet has went on to win an Oscar and, until the recent #MeToo movement, the
support of Hollywood heavyweights. “When you look objectively at Bill Cosby’s case, he was dating this girl and she wanted what he couldn’t give her, so she cried foul and got millions of dollars from Cosby and yet, years and years later, they come with what I believe were bogus charges against Cosby and the judge and prosecutor made sure they sent him away,” Boyd said. It’s also no secret that after Cosby’s sealed civil deposition was released in 2014, attorney Gloria Allred brought forward at least 30 women with claims against Cosby. Allred asked that Cosby put $100 million in a trust for the women and allow a magistrate to decide if they could get the money. Allred’s daughter, attorney Lisa Bloom, initially represented Weinstein. She said, “everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt,” and that Weinstein was “repentant.” After some backlash, Bloom dropped Weinstein as a client. “She never tried to give Cosby the benefit of the doubt,” Boyd said. “That’s what this whole thing has been about. It’s like out of the Jim Crow era. They will stick up for their own and they will make sure that a Black man pays.”
(APN) ATLANTA - Georgia's Secretary of State Brian Kemp is currently facing at least two lawsuits related to his voter purging practices in the lead-up to the November 2018 General Election. In 2017, Kemp found a way to purge another half a million voters from the voter rolls, continuing his practice of purging eligible voters from the voter rolls that he has engaged in since 2013. Only under the threat of a federal lawsuit, did Kemp turn over the names of over one half million voters purged from the voting rolls in 2017. At a press conference on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda, and the New Georgia Project announced their plans to join Greg Palast, an investigative journalist, to file a federal lawsuit against Kemp. The lawsuit accuses Kemp's office of using a faulty and racially biased method of removing legitimate voters from the rolls. "We are trying to get in touch with all the people who have been wrongly removed by this crazy crosscheck list which is racially biased," Palast said. To check to see if you have been purged, go to gregpalast.com In addition, a second lawsuit filed on Thursday, October 11, 2018, in federal district court by the Campaign Legal Center and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights under Law, challenges some 53,000 voter registration applications that have been held up in Kemp's office due to a mismatch. Kemp has said that those 53,000 Georgians are on a "pending" list and are eligible to vote on November 6, 2018. The 53,000 were first reported by the Associated Press. "Many people have died to have the right to vote. Folks like Kemp and others throughout this country think they have a legal right to remove people with certain ethnicities that they don't want to be part of the process. This is blatant racism," Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., President and CEO of SCLC, said. Others in the room held similar beliefs. Dr. Joe Beasley, an international activist and Rainbow Push organizer, referred to Kemp as "this

Kris Kobach, the Secretary of State of Kansas, is the main force behind the claim that there are purportedly millions of illegal voters committing fraud in the U.S. by voting twice in different states. The Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program, used by 26 states and administered by Kobach, is the Republican answer to a problem of massive voter fraud that does not exist. It allegedly finds voters with the same name who have registered in more than one state, creating a perceived justification for states to kick them off the voter rolls. Kemp, as well as 26 other Republican-controlled Secretaries of State, sent their entire voter files to Kobach to put them all together and cross-check the names. Crosscheck nationwide has tagged 7.2 million voters suspected of voting more than once. Yet, only four people have been charged with double voting or deliberate double registration, according to a Rolling Stone magazine investigation into the elusive double voters. Palast claims that Kemp took the list of names provided by Kobach, finding hundreds of thousands of Georgians to purge from the voter rolls for allegedly moving out of the State of Georgia, Palast claims. Crosscheck is supposed to check first, middle, and last names; plus birth date and last four digits of one's Social Security number. But that does not always happen. (continued on page 3)

State Superintendent Candidate Tony Thurmond Outlines His Education Vision In Call With Black Media Manny Otiko | California Black Media
Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) recently held a media call with members of the black press to discuss his plans for California’s education system. Thurmond is competing against Marshall Tuck for the post of state superintendent of public instruction. Thurmond served as a West Contra Costa School Board member, Richmond City Council member and social worker before he was elected to the legislature. He takes a more grassroots approach to educational problems. He believes early-childhood education and reading programs are the solutions to producing better students. As a legislator, Thurmond has also sponsored Assembly Bill 43 that wanted to levy taxes on the state’s private prisons and direct the money to the K-12 education system. (The bill died.) Thurmond said that, as a former school board member, he is aware of some of the problems black students face. Many of the reporters asked how Thurmond would solve the problem of high suspension rates of black students. He said we need to strengthen teaching training programs. Thurmond added that schools need to review their suspension rates because many students were being suspended for “willful defiance.” He added that teachers need to look into their “implicit bias,” when dealing with AfricanAmerican students. He also plans to create a pipeline to
produce more minority teachers. “Over the last year, I have spent time studying successful programs in other states to provide a model for California. I am encouraged by the results of these recruitment programs and look forward to introducing this pilot program that will provide teachers of color with the tools they need to educate and inspire the next generation of leaders,” said Thurmond. Several other states, such as Illinois and South Carolina, have implemented similar programs. According to a press release, minority representation among the teaching field is fairly low in California. Only 4 percent of educators are black and 20 percent are Latino. The numbers drop even lower when you look at male educators. Thurmond said he was also concerned about the high number of black students who are being put in special education programs or diagnosed with ADHD. He said that in some cases they are just being normal children. Thurmond added that not all students fit in a traditional lecture-based class. He said education needs to be more interactive and hands on. That is why he authored a bill that added $150 million for career technical education. Other issues Thurmond wants to focus on are students learning a second language and STEM courses. “We need to prepare our kids to compete in a global market,” he said. Tuck, Thurmond’s opponent in the superintendent’s race, is former CEO of Green Dot Public Schools, a charter chain that has schools in the Los Angeles area. and the ability to expel students. One of the worries about charter schools is that they operate as for-profit businesses that transfer money out of the local school system. Thurmond said he had co-sponsored legislation (AB 406) this year that was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. The legislation prevents for-profit charter schools in California.

Gamma Omega Chapter’s Youth Group of San Bernardino, California attended the Grand Celebration of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. 76th Founder’s Day. The celebration was held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Doubletree by Hilton Ontario, Airport. All of the chapters in the Western Region participated in the celebration. It was a grand affair that they will always remember. There was a wealth of knowledge shared about the visions and dreams of the Sorority’s Founders at the luncheon, which included improving the conditions in the community by offering Career Awareness Programs, and scholarships to assist high school students with expanding their education and career options. Outreach programs were implemented to provide assistance to families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday seasons. A walk-athon is held biennially to raise funds
for community-based organizations advocating for and serving people and their families with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is just a few of the many programs and projects that Eta Phi Beta Sorority offers as a result of the Founder’s vision. The culmination of the celebration was when three of Gamma Omega Chapter’s Bee-Ettes, MaRyah Clarks, Kayla Johnson, and Jadae Jackson had an opportunity to share their experiences as a sorority member. Their experiences included attending youth conferences and workshops, both in state and out of state, for self improvement, increasing their learning life skills, and social etiquette. These programs are offered to youth all over the United States including the Virgin Island. When we nourish our youth through meaningful and viable programs, we are nurturing our future leaders.

The planet will reach the crucial threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius – or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit – above pre-industrial levels by as early as 2030, precipitating the risk of extreme drought, wildfires, floods and food shortages for hundreds of millions of people, according to new climate change report issued by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. To avoid such catastrophic events, governments the world over must make rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society, according to the report. The authors say the 2030 date is based on current levels of greenhouse gas emissions and that the planet is already twothirds of the way there, with global temperatures having warmed about 1 degree Celsius. “We have a climate gap in this country. The main reason being that millions of low-income people, many of them minorities, tend to live in the geographical areas that are most impacted by climate change,” Etienne Deffarges, a policy expert and former global managing partner at Accenture and senior partner at Booz Allen Hamilton, told NNPA Newswire. “It’s no accident that the two most devastating hurricanes in the United States over the last 15 years, Maria and Katrina, took place in areas essentially populated by minorities,” Deffarges said, while also noting that more than 2,900 people in Puerto Rico died during Hurricane Maria and at least 1,800 perished because of Hurricane Katrina. The vulnerability of low-income populations to climate change isn’t a United States-specific problem. Some of the world’s poorest populations suffer even more

Trump Administration Releases Proposed Public Charge Regulations Advancing Justice-LA urges the community to not be alarmed Government News
LOS ANGELES, CA — On Wednesday, October 10, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officially posted proposed changes to public charge regulations in the Federal Register. These proposed changes are open for public comment for 60 days and are not final. The posted regulations change the public charge test and greatly expand the number of public benefit programs to include health care programs, such as non-emergency Medicaid or the Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy Program, nutrition programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and housing assistance programs, such as the Section 8 housing and rental assistance programs. "This is another attack on immigrant families by the Trump Administration," said Congresswoman Judy Chu, U.S. Representative, CA 27th District. "What's worse is that the proposed changes set up an elitist system, essentially putting a price tag on staying in this country. An immigrant's worth should not be measured by how much they make -- that has never been an American value." These proposed changes are not final and the rules governing public charge in the U.S. have not yet changed. In addition, the proposed changes will not affect people who are applying for citizenship; people who have become citizens; and certain groups of immigrants, including refugees, asylees, T- or U-visa applicants/ holders, Violence Against Women Act self-petitioners, special immigrant juveniles, and certain other immigrants who have a special relationship with the U.S. or came here under certain humanitarian programs. "The proposed public charge regulations pose a cruel choice for families who now have to balance keeping their families together with seeking medical care, putting food on the table, or keeping a roof over their heads," said

"We know there's a lot of fear, but we urge everyone to stay enrolled in any public benefit program you need to keep your family healthy." Annually, about 40% of green card holders are from Asian and Pacific Island nations, and family sponsorship accounts for most of them. Many community members have heard about the proposed changes, which have caused much confusion, anxiety, and fear. Already, the proposed regulation has cast a "chilling effect" on the community. "Seventy-seven percent of our patients are on Medi-Cal, 62% are Asian, and they're primarily lowincome," said Penny Chen, Member and Community Service Manager at Asian Pacific Health Care Ventures. "Many of our patients are scared and confused because of the proposed public charge rule. Even patients who are green card holders do not want to apply for Medi-Cal. These proposed rules will only make our broken health care system worse." "Even before the proposed public charge rules were posted, many members of our South Asian clients were not applying for public benefits in fear that it would adversely affect their immigration status," said Shikha Bhatnagar, Executive Director of South Asian Network. "Even mothers are refusing to get food stamps for their U.S. citizen children because they are so frightened." Immigrant families are encouraged to continue using public benefits they need in order to keep healthy and strong. It will take at least several months for these proposed rules to be finalized and the rule would not be retroactive so the use of benefits before its effective date will not be considered in any public charge determination. clean energy future. All states and the federal government should do likewise,” he said. One mitigating factor could be a shift away from the “global standard diet” and a move to restoring agrobiodiversity with the idea that, globally, we now rely heavily on wheat, rice, corn, soybeans, and palm oil, said Jennifer Kaplan of the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone Campus, in California. “We need to restore biodiversity in order to build in resilience to our food system so that we can find solutions when a crop succumbs to disease, pests, weeds, or climate change,” Kaplan said. “The larger the number of different species/varieties of food we have, the greater the probability that at least some of them can cope with changing conditions. And, of course, GMO foods, that are designed to drought resistant, heat tolerant, etc. will also be able to ease this burden.”

At least two million Africans – 10 to 15 percent – died during the infamous “Middle Passage” across the Atlantic. Some European governments, such as the British and French, introduced laws to control conditions on board. They reduced the numbers of people allowed on board and required a surgeon to be carried. The principal reason for taking action was concern for the crew, not the captives, historians said. The surgeons, often unqualified, were paid head-money to keep captives alive. By about 1800 records show that the number of Africans who died had declined to about one in 18. “Initially, the Dutch were against slavery which was considered to be a catholic heresy. This antislavery point of view can be easily explained,” den Heijer said. “Dutch seafarers first ventured across the Atlantic without the intention of enslaving anyone. They were mainly interested in the trade in Atlantic products like salt, sugar, wax and dye wood. At the beginning of the 17th century, however, the Dutch established small plantation colonies on the coast of Guyana, the area between the Orinoco and Amazon rivers,” he said. “Most of the early settlements were populated with Dutch colonists and a few indigenous slaves. The Dutch embraced the slave trade and slavery on a large scale for the first time in Brazil.” The slave trade also brought a great deal of wealth to the British ports that were involved. Researchers noted the count of slaves and slave ships that came through the main British ports in 1771, when the average working person earned $35 in British currency per year and a single slave in good condition could be sold in the Caribbean for $25. Liverpool had 107 ships and transported 29,250 slaves, historians noted.
London had 58 ships carrying 8,136 slaves while Bristol had 23 ships that transported 8,810 slaves. Additionally, researchers said Lancaster had 4 ships that transported 950 slaves. From 1791 to 1807, British ships carried 52 percent of all slaves taken from Africa while, from 1791 to 1800, British ships delivered 398,719 slaves to the Americas. While it was the British who stood as the most progressive couriers of whatever was transported through the sea, many other countries chartered ships and descended upon African nations to capture slaves. Ships sailed to Africa loaded with guns, tools, textiles and other manufactured goods and crews with guns went ashore to capture slaves and purchase slaves from tribal leaders. Slave ships spent months travelling to different parts of the coast, according to historians who described the devastation on a webpage titled The Transatlantic Slave Trade. Captives were often in poor health from the physical and mental abuse they suffered. The air in the hold was foul and putrid, according to historians. From the lack of sanitation, there was a constant threat of disease. Epidemics of fever, dysentery and small(continued in next 2 columns)

Kemp Faces Voter Purge Lawsuits In Georgia...continued from page 1 Often it is only the first and last names checked, which leads to different people with similar names being purged in error. Mark Swedlund, a database expert, looked at the data from Georgia and Virginia. "God forbid your last name is Garcia of which there are 858,000 in the U.S. and probably suspected of voting in 27 states... and if your name is James Brown there are 357 in Georgia suspected of voting in more than one state," Swedlund said in a Rolling Stone article. "It is an interesting day as we stand here and have a conversation about voter suppression in the birthplace of the civil rights movement," Attorney Gerald Griggs, Vice President, State Conference of NAACP observed. "We have sued Kemp four time," Griggs said. In 2015, Kemp's office was sued by NAACP and Common Cause for illegal purge of thousands of Georgia voters rolls. Over 800,000 Georgians were purged who did not vote for the previous three years. In 2016, Kemp was sued by the Georgia NAACP, Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda and Asian Americans Advancing Justice, for blocking thousands of minority voters from the rolls ahead of the presidential election. "We are calling on Mr. Kemp to step aside overseeing this elec-
tion... to remove the stain of voter suppression from the rolls and the appearance of impropriety with regards to access to November election. Two Secretaries of State has done it before while they were running for Governor to make sure all Georgians can have trust in this election and respect in the outcome," Greggs said. "The New Georgia Project, SCLC, NAACP, have registered over 300,000 people of color. 1.3 million have been purged from the voter rolls and we believe many of them are eligible to vote," Nse Ufot, Executive Director, the New Georgia Project, said. "As quickly as we are adding people to the voter rolls, between crosscheck and aggressive purges and the delays in processing voter registration forms, people are being denied access to the ballot," Ufot said. The lawsuit, filed under the National Voting Rights Act of 1993, seeks to get the entire KempCrosscheck files and to restore the voting rights of thousands legitimate and eligible voters whose voter registration, the lawsuit says, have been illegally canceled. This lawsuit against Kemp is designed to correct this injustice, and will be the first of 26 lawsuits filed against state officials who have used the faulty Kobach purge list.

One way is the “Medicare & You” handbook, mailed each fall to every Medicare household in the country. This booklet lists all the Medicare health and drug plans available where you live, along with basic information such as premiums, deductibles, and contacts. There’s also the Medicare Plan Finder, at www.Medicare.gov. Look for a green button that says, “Find health & drug plans.” Click on that, plug in your zip code, and you’ll see all of the Medicare Advantage and Part D plans available in your area. You can compare them based on benefits, premiums, co-pays, and estimated out-of-pocket costs. Contact information for the plans is listed. The Medicare.gov website also can help you decide whether Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage is better for you, and can help estimate your out-ofpocket costs with either type of coverage. Each Medicare health and drug plan has been assigned a star rating of from one to five stars, with five stars being the best in terms of quality. If you don’t have access to a computer, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Our customer service representatives can help you with questions about Medicare health and drug plans. The call is free. Another terrific resource is the State Health Insurance and Counseling Program. SHIP is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides free, personalized counseling to people with Medicare. As Governor, Walker rejected more than a billion dollars of federal healthcare money and failed to enact common sense reforms. Walker proposed not once, but twice, to cut millions from Wisconsin’s popular prescription drug program, SeniorCare. The price of Walker keeping his special interest friends impressed is the health of Wisconsin families. Scott Walker standing by while Wisconsin families desperately needed help with health care costs made me sick…so I decided to run for governor. Like tens of thousands of Wisconsinites, I beat cancer. That means I have a pre-existing condition. Right now, Scott Walker is suing the federal government to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and end protections for the estimated 2.4 million Wisconsinites like me who have some form of pre-existing condition. How to shop for Medicare health and drug plans
When you shop for a new car or truck, you don’t just buy the first one you see, do you? Probably not. You shop around, looking for the best deal you can get on a vehicle that fits your driving needs as well as your pocketbook. Well, it’s the time of year when you can shop for a Medicare health or drug plan. Medicare’s open enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7, 2018. If you have Original Medicare, meaning that you can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, you don’t need to think about open enrollment. But if you have a Medicare Advantage (Part C) health plan, or a Medicare (Part D) prescription drug plan, you may want to see whether there’s another plan on the market that would be a better match for you, at a lower price. If you’re enrolled in a plan and you’re happy with it, you don’t need to do anything. But Medicare health and drug plans – run by private insurers approved by Medicare – can change from year to year. A plan can raise its monthly premium or drop a medicine that you need. So it makes good sense to review your coverage each year. Make sure your plan still is a good fit for you in terms of cost, coverage, and quality. If it isn’t, look for another plan .During open enrollment, you can sign up for a Medicare Advantage health plan or Part D prescription drug plan, or switch from one plan to another. Your new coverage will take effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Meanwhile, Scott Walker supported a Republican plan that would have increased premiums, allowed insurance companies to deny coverage to those with preexisting conditions, and created what AARP called an age tax, where insurance companies could charge older people five times more. Anyone who plays games with the health of seniors and children should not be leading our state. It’s time for a change. That’s why I’m asking for your vote this November. If we want to fix our state’s health care system, then we need action. And that means heading to the polls to vote, whether you’re voting early or on Election Day, Nov. 6. Together, we can build a stronger Wisconsin and better health care system. But I can’t do it without your help. Riverside County officials urge community to get flu shots Health News
Riverside County health officials are urging residents to get their flu shot as a way to prevent spread of the illness. The appeal from Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser came Tuesday as he reminded County Supervisors of the 100-year anniversary of the Great Pandemic of 1918, when hundreds of thousands of people died in the U.S. from the flu and millions more succumbed worldwide. “Those numbers are staggering, and should never happen again,” Kaiser told Supervisors, some of whom received their flu shot at the start of the meeting. “But despite our many medical advancements since then, the best way to fight the flu is still to get your annual shot.” While the severity of the current influenza season cannot be predicted, Kaiser noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 80,000 people died
during last year’s flu season. In Riverside County, there were 23 flu-associated deaths (people younger than 65) last flu season. Health officials recommend anyone 6 months or older receive the flu shot and estimate there will be adequate doses available. The effectiveness of the vaccine will not be known for some time; last year’s flu shot was estimated to be 40 percent effective. “That directly means you’re 40 percent less likely to get the flu, and even if you do get it, it’s usually less severe,” Kaiser said. “Even in bad years that’s still better odds than you’d get without the flu shot, and in good years the protection is excellent.” Residents can also slow the spread of the flu by properly covering their coughs or sneezes, washing their hands frequently and staying home from work or school when they are sick.

‘The Hate U Give’ lacks grit but has its moments By Dwight Brown The phrase “The Hate U Give Little Infants F—s Everybody” gave the hip hop group T-H-U-GL-I-F-E its name. The sentiment from the late Tupac Shakur (and other group members, Big Syke, Stretch, Mopreme Shakur, The Rated R and Macadoshis) meant that the kids you ignore or deride turn into young people who will be a stone in your shoe. Writer Angie Thomas used that mantra as a title for her bestselling book The Hate U Give, which is inspired by the tragic shooting of Oscar Grant by a transit police officer in 2009 in Oakland, Calif. In the movie The Hate U Give, Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg, Hunger Games) has a lot on her shoulders for a 16-year-old. She lives in a Black working classneighborhood and is the daughter of Maverick, an ex-convict (Russell Hornsby, Fences) who has turned his life around and owns a local grocery store. Her dad’s past colors his family’s existence every day. He instills in his children basic survival skills for dealing with the police: “Keep your hands where they can see them.” He gives them self-esteem lessons, as well: “Know your rights. Know your worth.” To give his kids better opportunities, Maverick and his wife Lisa (Regina Hall) send Starr and her brothers Seven (Lamar Johnson) and Sekani (TJ Wright) to a mostly White prep school far from their inner-city home. Living her life in two places is an adjustment; Starr acclimates well. Then one night her worlds are both torn apart and shoved together. After a late party in the hood, she’s riding in a car with childhood friend Khalil (Algee Smith). A White cop pulls them over and questions them. Starr immediately puts her hands on the dashboard. Khalil is reluctant. When asked to step outside the vehicle, Khalil seems blasé. There is a deadly incident. Is it a mistake? Standard police procedure? Manslaughter? Khalil’s sudden death changes Starr’s life

Screenwriter Audrey Wells reportedly passed away Oct. 4 after a long battle with cancer. Her gripping screenplay lines up the characters’ histories, rivalries and relationships. Each are distinct people dealing with teen angst, social issues, racial pride, family dynamics, civil rights concerns, interracial dating, drug dealing and gang violence. Sometimes, the magnitude of the drama overwhelms what should or could have been a film based in stark realism. Add in a subplot about a teen befriended by flaky gal pals and you’re caught between a story with issues that matter and a shallow adolescent tale. Mix in gang violence that is more reminiscent of West Side Story than The Bloods vs. The Crips and it takes away from the seriousness of lowincome neighborhood crime. The odd juxtapositions may be unsettling for some audiences as they are being pulled into a main storyline that strongly mirrors incidents of police malfeasance and the post-traumatic stress that follows. It seems that the old adage “necessity is the mother of invention” continues to ring true even in the 21st century, especially for ‘mompreneur’ Karen Byrd. The California-based business woman is the founder/creator of NATURAL GIRLS UNITED, a doll company that takes straighthaired dolls of different skin tones and gives them customized, ethnic textured hairstyles and clothing. Less than 10 years ago, Natural Girls United was created while Karen was still working in corporate America. Today, she’s now sending her beautiful dolls to customers throughout the world. One third of her customers are from the United Kingdom. Other customers are ordering from Africa, Brazil, Netherlands, Australia, a few from China, and of course, the USA. “The idea for these dolls really started in my childhood. I had dolls that didn’t look like me or anyone around me, “recalls Karen. “The hair wasn’t like mine, nor the eye colors. Even when the black dolls were released, they still had features of the Caucasian dolls. It was confusing for a child. As an adult, as I was raising my daughters, I still couldn’t find any dolls that really did have our African American hair features. So, after half a lifetime there still wasn’t anything out here, as far
as real ethnic looking dolls were concerned.” Karen decided to find an answer to this problem. Her Natural Hair Dolls actually began as a hobby. She experimented on changing the hairstyles on just two dolls, took photographs of them, and placed them on a natural hair blog site she had at the time. “People got so excited over the pictures and asked if they could purchase the dolls. From there, the demand for the dolls just increased more and more,” recalls Byrd. There have been numerous “doll tests studies” as early as the 1940’s, with sociologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark, and more recently in 2007, with high school student Kiri Davis, which have clearly shown that African American children often think black dolls are bad and ugly, while considering white dolls as good and beautiful. “These types of messages are very harmful and confusing to children,” says Ms. Byrd. “I know it was confusing to me when I was a child. It all has to do with the images they see as they grow up. plicated script with disparate storylines and pulls together all those elements into a comprehensible film that does have powerful moments. The film has a tone, texture and style that can be traced back to his overall guidance: the cinematography (Mihai Malaimare Jr., Nina), production design (William Arnold, The Edge of Seventeen) and music (Dustin O’Halloran, Lion) are perfect — maybe too perfect for a film that should have had more authentic grit. There are scenes that look like location shots from a music video, and they don’t fit in. But, the wealth of talent on view is almost staggering. Stenberg carries the weight of the film, giving Starr just enough juice to grow from a humble, vulnerable teen to a courageous protester. Hornsby displays a grace and strength as the father who tries to protect his children. His character is wise, adaptive, paternal and loving. Hall, as the watchful mom, never leaves a doubt that she who would risk everything for her kids. Anthony Mackie plays a local crime lord and is less successful at making heads or tails of his dubious character. Rap artist Common adds a nice touch as an understanding cop. K.J. Apa as Chris, Starr’s White boyfriend, is
a pleasant surprise as a loving partner willing to see her through her difficulties. This is a well-produced movie about a very worthy subject. The dramatic elements range from weak (scenes with Starr at her prep school), to questionable (would a drug lord really threaten Starr for the reasons he states?), to right on target (the portrait of the Carter family and its concerned parents is affecting). If you want a close-up view of the Black Lives Matter Movement, take a look at the very compelling grassroots documentary Whose Streets? That doc will bring you into the heart of a timely and vital civil rights movement. The Hate U Give is well-intentioned, but not as genuine. Still, it’s well worth a trip to the movie theater. To be grateful is to recognize, acknowledge, and accept that we are a recipient of a gift – life. You should be thankful for your families, health, food, and even a glass of water. Thank God for the simple things. You can even be thankful for the heartaches, the pains, and the suffering. [Romans 8:28] says, “All things work together for good…” That is, the thing itself is not good, but it is God Who is working all things together for good. Do you want to live on the highest level of life? Cultivate the attitude of gratitude always and in all things I don’t care how bad, difficult, dark, or mysterious things get; take the ultimate step of faith and say, “God, You’re greater than this, and I thank You.” Thankful people are happy people. “Well,” you say, “if I had something to be thankful for, I’d be happy.” You have missed the point! You do have something to be thankful for. You have life. You have Christ. If you didn’t have anything else but Jesus, you would have enough to praise God for all eternity. You may say, “But my circumstances are not good.” The apostle Paul was in prison when he wrote this, yet he was rejoicing in the Lord. Gratefulness turned his prison to a palace, but ungratefulness can turn your palace to a prison. I’m telling you, the attitude of gratitude will change your life. You’re not just simply to be thankful one day a year. One day is not long enough to
thank God for all that He’s given you. His blessings come daily. [Psalm 68:19] says, “Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loadeth us with benefits…” Every day God has brand new blessings for you, and every day ought to find you thanking God. Every prayer that you pray ought be salted with thanks. In everything give thanks. Not in some things, but in all things. Everything, every area of life is to be the subject of thanksgiving. There’s so much to be thankful for! Anything good that you have has come from God. You didn’t get it by luck, ingenuity, hard work, wit, or wisdom. It is proper to thank God for it. Understand, living with gratitude is not a human way to live, not a natural way to live – it’s supernatural. And this kind of thankfulness only comes out of a vital relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is the substance of it, the source of it, and the strength of it. We are to be filled with the Spirit, and we are to be giving thanks. And that’s the only way we can do it! [P.S.] Being grateful does not protect us from rejection, pain, or sorrow; it doesn’t protect us from any of that. But if we are able to incorporate gratitude into our basic attitude toward life and make it a part of the ground of our being, it gives us another way of responding to what is taking place. I tell you, what a wonderful way to start the day and invite gratitude in!

America is in pain. John Dorhauer General Minister and President People who have suffered sexual trauma, who have spent significant effort shielding themselves from public shame, and who have sought healing from deep wounds, now find their stories painfully reflected on very public and highly politicized stages. Those who tell their stories, men and women alike, face derision, shame, humiliation, and death threats in order to let the world know what the men in their lives are capable of. Yet repeatedly those who have threatened them, abused them, told them to keep quiet, and dismissed them, remain in positions of power. Further contributing to the pain of those affected, our elected and other high-profile leaders willingly filter the truth in order to expedite their personal or partyfirst ends. Political parties push ideological narratives with little to no regard for those affected in the process or for our shared humanity. The message received is that the cost of victims’ truth is too high and not one we are willing to pay. This is the message received by our children, too. It teaches boys that they can get away with a lot more than they might think, and it teaches girls that unmasking a male abuser can come at great personal risk. We watch this message play out on the public stage, and some of our nation's most revered leaders are reinforcing this message again and again. I learned a long time ago how much courage it takes for a woman to break her silence. I learned as a pastoral counselor how critical it is for a victim’s health and recovery that she be heard, trusted, and believed when she breaks her silence. Many women have been threatened by their abusers, and many times the threats come at a cost not only to them but to the people they love. Threats are as real as the trauma of abuse. If, when women find the courage to speak, they are ignored, dis-
missed, ridiculed, or become targets of public rage, we re-traumatize them and make far less likely they will speak up again. America is in great pain. Too many women are living in bodies that have been abused by men with power. Too many men are living in a world where their abuse of power is accepted, excused, and protected. I believe. I don't doubt any woman, no matter how long it has taken to tell her story, when she speaks of her abuse and trauma. I refuse to respect the authority of any man who has used his power to subdue a woman against her will. I call upon people of faith to find their voices and speak out about the sexual abuse, trauma, and assault that have become far too common. I call upon people of faith to find their voices and speak up in order to create a world where women who dare to tell their stories and break their silence are cared for, heard, and nurtured, a world where the men who look to us to shame their victims do not get the audience they need to protect them. I call upon men of faith, men in power, and men in political offices to adopt a position of radical and deep listening to the voices of those who experience our use and abuse of power as a threat. These are important steps we must take to heal the wounds we have all had a hand in creating. Healing will not happen immediately, but we must begin immediately to act. Anything short of this guarantees the wound will fester and grow. Be the Church. Believe. Listen. Teach. Heal. RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Ca.— Riverside County children through age 5 will receive expanded access to early intervention and mental health services through a new program that aims to position them for emotional, social and academic success in school and life, mental health advocates announced this week. One out of seven children between the ages of 2 and 8 have a diagnosed mental, behavioral or developmental disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The first five years are a period of incredible growth and development in a child’s life—the brain and emotional health are developing,” said Anna Loza, a licensed clinical social worker and supervisor with RUHS—Behavioral Health. “We want to make it easier for families and children to participate in a range of prevention, early intervention, and mental health programs.” RUHS—Behavioral Health SET4-School program will spearhead a new, three-year project with a $7.5 million grant from First 5 Riverside. First 5 Riverside is funded by tobacco taxes generated though Proposition 10, a statewide voter approved act created to support and improve the early development of children from the prenatal stage to five years of age. SET-4-School partners with
school districts in Riverside, Jurupa, Nuview, Lake Elsinore and Perris. The program provides behavioral health screening for children and connects them with follow-up services including parent education, classroom support for teachers, child social skills groups, and mental health treatment. “This is an important piece of a child wellness model. Our hope is that it becomes a model in all our communities,” said Loza. Nonprofit organizations Catholic Charities, Family Service Association and Victor Community Support Services will work with RUHS—Behavioral Health to deploy additional support and intervention programs. RUHS— Public Health also will provide support. The project will offer specialized training for mentors and professionals who work with young children in school, community-based, and behavioral health settings, Loza said. Mother of six, Lorie LaceyPayne, knows firsthand the challenges of recognizing the signs of mental health disorders in very young children and accessing the resources to address them. Angels Opt-Out of Anaheim After more than half a century, Angels Baseball may leave Local/National News
A Statement from Anaheim Council Member Kris Murray Today, Angels Baseball exercised their legal option to terminate their lease with the City of Anaheim. This is further evidence that Anaheim's toxic political environment has very real consequences. First the city lost thousands of local jobs and millions in future tax revenue when Disney cancelled their planned four-diamond hotel. Now the city is at-risk of losing our beloved Angels Baseball team. This must stop now. The hubris of some in council leadership that our largest businesses will never leave is false these risks are real. We cannot allow the demise of the Anaheim dream. The Angels are taking appropriate measures to protect the team
and organization by exercising their contractual option to leave Anaheim if the economic climate does not improve. The Mayor and City of Anaheim have had eight years to negotiate in good faith with the team and didn't get it done. Instead the team has endured years of rancor and abuse from the highest levels of city government. There is no 'better or more profitable use of this site' as the mayor has stated repeatedly. Some things are more important than profit - Angels Baseball is too important to Anaheim. Angels Baseball gives back millions to city and county organizations serving children and families, they generate significant jobs and tax revenue for Anaheim, Orange and surrounding cities, and they represent Anaheim's heritage and our future. Anaheim residents cannot risk losing the team to political gamesmanship or wage measures that seek to do at the ballot box that which should be done at the bargaining table. We need elected leaders who will work on behalf of residents, taxpayers and the team to make sure Angels Baseball stays in Anaheim for the next generation.
