Since Trump took office in January, 29 departments have joined a special program under which they are deputized to perform some tasks of immigration agents, doubling its size in 10 months, according to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. And the administration hopes that is just the beginning. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request show that the administration has also had contact with scores of additional jurisdictions about the program, and 38 of those told Reuters in interviews they have submitted applications for the program or are potentially interested in joining. The program, known as 287(g), deputizes local officers trained by ICE to use federal records to vet arrestees they suspect of being in the country illegally and then turn them over to federal agents if they are. The Department of Homeland Security has said in the past that police forces taking part in the program have flagged tens of thousands of people for deportation. The broad expansion of the program comes as Trump seeks to accelerate arrests and deportations of people living in the United States illegally. The large number of departments expressing interest in the program has not been previously reported. Most of the police departments that have joined, or are seeking to join, the program have relatively small populations, typically fewer than 100,000 residents, with small immigrant populations. In contrast, the roughly three dozen so-called “sanctuary cities” that have limited their cooperation on immigration enforcement have a median population of half a million people and larger foreignborn populations, according to a Reuters analysis. Under President Barack Obama, the 287(g) program was downsized and its funding reduced amid concerns that some participating police departments were over-zealous in their targeting of Latinos. Critics also said it
eroded trust of police in immigrant communities. By the end of fiscal year 2016 only 32 agreements were left in place, down from a peak in 2010 when some 70 jurisdictions were participating. Today, 60 departments in 18 states participate. Three-quarters of the agencies that have already signed 287(g) agreements or are interested in doing so are in counties that voted for Trump in 2016, according to a Reuters analysis of electoral data. ICE would not confirm which jurisdictions had shown interest until they had signed agreements. An ICE official, who asked not to be named, said interest increased after Trump took office and signed an executive order that included expanding support for the program. Town vs. City The township of Bensalem, Pa., just half an hour up the road from Philadelphia, is one of those hoping to join the 287(g) program. Fred Harran, director of public safety in the city of 60,000, says that any immigrant in the country illegally who commits a crime, even a misdemeanor like shoplifting or possession of a small amount of drugs, should be considered for deportation, and he welcomes help from ICE. “If deporting you out of this country when you commit a crime is a tool at my disposal, you are darn right I am going to use it,” Harran said. In neighboring Philadelphia, police commissioner Richard Ross Jr. favors a different approach. Like many police chiefs in large cities with significant immigrant populations, he wants immigrant residents to feel comfortable cooperating with authorities to solve crimes. While Philadelphia and other big cities say they will turn over serious criminals to ICE, they do not believe local police should be doing the work of federal immigration agents. “There’s no way in the world that you would want to come forward as a source of information if you believe you are in jeopardy of being deported,” Ross testified at a court hearing in October. Philadelphia is suing the Trump administration over its threats to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities. In Bensalem, Harran says he
first reached out to ICE about joining 287(g) during Obama’s presidency. But in 2012, Obama ended the part of the program he had hoped to join. It had allowed local officers out on patrol to question and arrest people suspected of violating immigration laws. Obama left in place the part of the program Trump has now expanded. In a February memo, then-Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said ICE would consider bringing back the discontinued part of the program. An ICE official familiar with the program said he was “unaware of any plans right now” to revive it. Money-making Opportunity? Once a jurisdiction is approved for the 287(g) program, it designates local personnel to be trained at a federal facility. Local jurisdictions pay for travel, housing and expenses for officers during training. ICE pays to install its databases and other technology in local offices for certified officers to use. Cities not participating in the program can still approach ICE if they have suspicions about arrestees, but the process can be time-consuming and cumbersome. Participating jurisdictions also, as part of their agreement with ICE, have the option of signing separate contracts to house immigrant detainees for a fee. “It’s an opportunity to make money for a county that is facing economic hardship,” said Chris Kleinberg, the sheriff of Dakota County, Nebraska. He said it has applied to be part of the program. Of the 98 jurisdictions that have existing agreements or are interested in getting them, at least 27 already house people for ICE, according to ICE data through April 2017. Some police departments, however, have backed down from their support of 287(g) in the face of political pressure. Orange County, the only place participating in the program in California, will end its agreement on Jan. 1 following the passage of a statewide “sanctuary bill,” which prevents police from inquiring about people’s immigration status throughout California, said Ray Grangoff from the sheriff’s department. Concerns About Program
ICE says the 287(g) program increases the number of immigrants it is able to deport. A 2010 report from the DHS inspector general said the program accounted for “a significant portion of nationwide ICE removal activity.” In fiscal year 2008 for example, 287(g) officers identified 33,831 immigrants for deportation, or 9.5 percent of all removals during that period, the report said. A 2011 study of seven 287(g) jurisdictions by the Washingtonbased nonpartisan think tank Migration Policy Institute found the program did not target the most serious criminals and led to an increase in immigrants’ mistrust of local authorities. The study found that in the first 10 months of fiscal year 2010, half of the immigrants flagged to ICE in the 287(g) jurisdictions had committed misdemeanors, including immigration violations that are often civil not criminal offenses. “Many of the immigrants that are arrested in traffic stops or for loitering are not the real threats to public safety,” said Chris Rickerd from the American Civil Liberties Union. In November, the ACLU identified 14 jails and counties applying for the program as having had problems in the past, including poor detention conditions or accusations of racial bias. One such place is Alamance County, N.C., which had its 287(g) program terminated in 2012. The Justice Department sued Sheriff Terry Johnson that year over allegations his office discriminated against Latinos at traffic stops and checkpoints. At trial, the department presented evidence that officers used derogatory terms like “wetback” and “taco eater,” which the sheriff’s office denied. The judge dismissed the case, but in 2016 the county entered into a settlement with the government to avoid an appeal, committing to “bias free” policing. Johnson said in a phone interview that he was contacted by ICE about rejoining the 287(g) program earlier this year. He applied, and in March he sent a letter to Tom Homan, the acting director of ICE, saying it was “one of the best law enforcement programs” he had ever been involved with during his 45-year career.
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans scrambled Monday to make changes to a Republican tax bill in an effort to win over holdout GOP senators and pass a tax package by the end of the year. In a morning tweet, the president said, “With just a few changes, some mathematical, the middle class and job producers can get even more in actual dollars and savings.” Trump and Senate leaders are trying to balance competing demands, as some senators fear the package would add to the nation’s mounting debt, while others want more generous tax breaks for businesses. In a boost for the legislation, Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said he would back the measure. Trump hosted Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee at the White House Monday. Afterward, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said the plan is to vote on the current tax bill this week, then work out the differences between the Senate bill and one passed by the House earlier this month. “We think the Senate bill made some substantial improvements over the House bill but we’ll work through those when we get to a conference committee with the House,” Cornyn told reporters. But as of Monday, GOP leaders were still trying to round up the votes in the Senate to pass the bill. “We always have to deal with everybody. It’s not any one particular person,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Finance Committee. “These are
tough times, these are tough issues, they’re hard to deal with and we’ve had to deal with them.” Trump suggested he is open to making unspecified changes to the way millions of “passthrough” businesses are taxed, a sticking point for some lawmakers. These are businesses in which profits are passed onto the owners, who report the income on their individual tax returns. The vast majority of U.S. businesses, big and small, are taxed this way. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has already declared his opposition to the current bill, saying it doesn’t cut business taxes enough for these types of partnerships and corporations. Johnson gets substantial income from such companies, including a manufacturer he helped found in Wisconsin and a commercial real estate company, according to his financial disclosure statements. Trump and Republicans have set as a vital political goal the passage of tax overhaul legislation by the end of the year. The House recently passed a $1.5 trillion bill. Senate GOP leaders hope to muscle their bill through this week. Trump was meeting Monday with five members of the Senate Finance Committee who are on board with the GOP plan. He will travel to Capitol Hill Tuesday to lobby Republican senators personally. Republicans have only two votes to spare in the Senate, where they hold a 52-48 edge. Is it Time to Put Down Soul Food? By Tyler Brady, Howard University News Servicen adminOn November 27, 2017 WASHINGTON — As we enjoy the holiday season, Americans will be involved in two of their favorite seasonal activities– shopping and eating. It is the time to dine on many of those dishes primarily reserved for this time of the year, and for black Americans, it is a chance to indulge in a cuisine born out of slavery and made delicious and famous by ingenious black mothers, grandmothers and even a few black men — soul food. They will gather around the dinner table for such favorites as macaroni and cheese, collard greens, turnip greens, ox tails, neck bones, black-eyed peas, dressing and gravy, turkey, honey-baked ham, banana pudding, chitterlings, candied yams, cornbread and sweet potato pie. Some say it is called soul food because it’s good for the soul. Is it, however, good for the body? Not if you look at the number of people who wind up in hospitals annually after eating that holiday meal. Last Thanksgiving, 36,729 people visited the emergency room, including many with high blood pressure who had gorged themselves on highly-salted seasonal favorites, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The American College of Cardiology says sodium-rich foods are a major cause of high blood pressure, and many soul food items traditionally contain large amounts of sodium. Consequently, continuous consumption can contribute significantly to high blood pressure. Having high blood pressure can lead to a number of health issues, such as heart attack, stroke, heart disease and kidney disease. So, is soul food bad for you? Is it time to put it down? That question becomes particularly relevant considering the American College of Cardiology’s new standards for what constitutes high blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured with a systolic number first, followed by a diastolic number. The new guidelines dropped the numbers from 140 systolic/90 diastolic to 130/80. Among African Americans, 41 percent of adults are currently diagnosed as having high blood pressure, compared with 27 percent of whites. Soul food was created during slavery, when slaves were given the worst parts of the animals -ears, feet, tails, nose, ears, intestines -- to cook and eat, some historians say. Slaves turned to heavily seasoning their food to make it more palatable. Cooking with heavy seasoning, particularly salt, became a tradition, as soul food became a staple of black American kitchens. The bad part about soul food is not the collard greens, the mac and cheese, nor the ham. It is the large quantities of salt and the sodium in the butters that are used to season them that can lead to high blood pressure. The answer is using less salt and using other types of seasoning. The American Heart Association recommends consuming less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day, which is less than a teaspoon of salt. It will be a difficult transition for many Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average American consumes 3,436 milligrams of sodium daily. There are a number of salt-free
seasoning substitutes for sale in local grocery stores, including Mrs. Dash, Kirkland Signature No-Seasoning, Lawry’s Salt-Free 17 Seasons, The Spice Hunter and Morton’s Nature’s Seasons Seasoning. Cooks also suggest a variety of ways to add flavor without salt, such as using lemon pepper, onions and garlic, herbs and spices, lemon juice, citrus and citrus zest, vinegar, infused oils, beer, wine, salsa, chutney and chili peppers. So the answer is simple. No, it is not necessarily time to put down soul food, but it is time to cut back on the salt in all of your cuisine. An obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Harer maintained a practice in San Bernardino for more than 30 years and served as medical director at Riverside County Regional Medical Center. He also served as president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the world’s largest organization of Ob-Gyn specialists. Harer had also served that organization as chair for California and as national secretary. Harer also co-founded TelMed
Inc., a nationwide service that offered free, taped health information by telephone and fielded more than 300 million calls. Dr. Harer holds the distinction of receiving the first honorary doctorate ever bestowed by CSUSB in 2001. Dr. Harer’s fascination with ancient Egypt started as a child and continued into adulthood. As a young medical resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Harer would take his breaks by walking the hallways of the university museum. He started collecting in 1955 with the purchase of a scarab necklace for Pamela. Dr. Harer was the first non-professional to become a governor of the American Research Center in Egypt, while also serving eight years on the executive committee. He has explored with the Berkeley Theban Mapping Project and excavated in Egypt with the Brooklyn Museum expedition to the Mut precinct in Karnak since 1981. He is recognized internationally as an authority on ancient Egyptian medicine with numerous articles and lectures, and was an adjunct professor of Egyptian art at CSUSB. Now a resident of Seattle, Dr. Harer has also loaned parts of his collection to major shows in dozens of museums all over the world. For more information about the W. However, on a recent frigid morning in the U.K. recently, commuters discovered there was more to fear than the ice, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Police throughout England reported that the country's car thieves were out in droves. In fact, car owners who popped indoors while their motors were running to de-ice their windshields were calling in to report car thefts at an alarming rate of one every five minutes. It is difficult, at best, to "hot wire" new cars; you need a key. As one wag put it: "to car thieves, frosty mornings are a Christmas gift."

Charlene Crowell says that payday lenders are bad for the Black community. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” is a well-known adage. In recent weeks, it seems that phrase could also be an apt description of the unrelenting efforts of predatory payday lenders to sell their wares. Across the country, 15 states as well as in the District of Columbia, with varying geographies, economies and demographics have enacted strong rate cap limits. In each locale, these actions were taken to curb the harmful consequences of payday lenders’ 300 percent or higher interest rate loans. When voters or legislatures approve rate caps, these lenders seek loopholes to evade state requirements. Changing products from payday to car title-loans is one way. Others pose as “loan brokers” or “mortgage lenders” to avoid regulation of payday lending. Even at the federal level and on the heels of a still-new rule by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), payday lenders and their supporters are now pressing for legislation to continue and expand triple-digit lending on small-dollar loans. The same deception that hides the real cost of predatory, consumer loans is reflected in the title of pending legislation in both the House of Representatives and in the Senate. The Protecting Consumers’ Access to Credit Act of 2017 (H.R. 3299 and S. 1624) would
allow payday lenders, high-cost online lenders, and other predatory lenders to partner with banks to make loans that surpass existing state interest rate limits. This legislative scheme would legalize payday lenders to charge tripledigit interest rates, despite state laws banning them. Some term this financial switch as innovation for “fintech,” a recently coined term that smacks of the 21st Century’s tech focus, but in everyday terms, these actions are a renewed effort for an old scheme known as “rent-a-bank.” If the bill is enacted, states that have annually saved an estimated $2.2 billion each year by banning triple-digit interest would have to face the return of past debt trap lending. Additionally, and in 34 states where a $2,000, 2-year installment loan with interest higher than 36 percent is illegal today, would enable predatory lenders to charged unlimited rates on these longer-term loans. One more item to note: these measures are advancing with bipartisan support. Virginia’s Senator Mark Warner, the lead sponsor of that chamber’s version has Senators Gary Peters (Michigan), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania) and Steve Daines (Montana) as his co-sponsors. On the House side, Rep. Patrick McHenry from North Carolina, has the help of two Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members, New York’s Congressman Greg Meeks and Wisconsin’s Congresswoman Gwen Moore. Right now, both New York and Pennsylvania have rate caps that prevent triple-digit rate lending. It is therefore curious why bill cosponsors would strip their own

Brown, Jr. Sacramento – The new California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) will begin operation this Saturday July 1, 2017 following legislation signed into law this week by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. “This newly established department will lead to fair and equal tax administration in our state and will uphold the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights,” said Government Operations Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer. “We are committed to a seamless transition and ensuring that taxpayers will see no difference in service.” The new law – the Taxpayer Transparency and Fairness Act of 2017 – restructures the State Board of Equalization into three separate entities: The State Board of Equalization, CDTFA and the Office of Tax Appeals. CDTFA will be housed within the Government Operations Agency while the Board will be an independent agency and continue to administer property, alcoholic beverage and insurance taxes. The Office of Tax Appeals is formed as an independent entity starting July 1, 2017, but doesn’t begin full operation and hearing appeals until January 1, 2018. CDTFA will be led by David Botelho, 59, of San Leandro, has
been appointed acting director by Governor Brown. Botelho served as program budget manager at the California Department of Finance from 2013 to 2016, where he was chief of the office of state audits and evaluations from 2008 to 2013. He held several positions at the California Department of Health Care Services from 1993 to 2008, where he was deputy director of audits and investigations, financial audits branch chief and acting assistant division chief of the laboratory science division. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $161,040. Botelho is registered without party preference. “We are excited to have someone with David’s background and experience to lead the CDTFA transition,” Batjer said. “I am confident he is the right person and I thank him for taking on this important role.” CDTFA will handle most of the taxes and fees previously collected by the Board of Equalization, including sales and use tax. state law protections. In other home states of these legislators, payday loan interest rates are some of the highest in the country. For example, in Wisconsin the average payday interest rate is 574 percent; in Michigan, the average interest is 369 percent. This bill would expand this type of predatory lending in their states, rather than reining it in. On November 15, the House bill passed out of its assigned committee with a split among CBC members serving on the House Financial Services. While Representatives Maxine Waters (California), Al Green (Texas), and Keith Ellison (Minnesota) opposed the bill, Lacy Clay and Emanuel Cleaver (both of Missouri), joined Meeks and Moore in its support. It is noteworthy that in Missouri, the average payday loan interest rate is 443 percent. For civil rights advocates, the committee vote was disturbing. “The potential costs and damage to consumers is significant, especially for borrowers of color, as research shows that payday lenders disproportionately target communities of color and trap consumers in unsustainable cycles of borrowing and reborrowing high-cost loans,” said Vanita Gupta, the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. “Under these arrangements, banks effectively ‘rent’ their federal charter powers to non-banks lenders, in exchange for a fee associated with each loan.” Hilary O. Shelton, the director of the NAACP’s Washington bureau and the senior vice president for policy and advocacy said that
the swarm of payday lenders in our communities is blocking access to responsible credit and lending options; companies that are offering those options, can’t compete with the deep pockets and market penetration of the payday lenders, Shelton added. “Responsible banking policy would be acting to end these high-cost loans, not make them more common,” said Shelton. The concerns of civil rights leaders are also shared by a nationwide coalition of 152 national and state organizations who together advised all of Congress of their collective opposition. Coalition members include church conferences and affiliates, consumer groups, housing, labor, legal advocates and others. Approximately 20 state attorneys general are also on record opposing the bill’s provision. “This bill represents the efforts of high-cost lenders to circumvent the most effective protection against predatory loans—state interest rate caps,” said Scott Estrada, the director of Federal Advocacy with the Center for Responsible Lending. “Rather than making it easier for predatory lenders to exploit financially distressed individuals, Congress should be establishing a federal rate cap of 36 percent that protects all Americans, just as it did in 2006 for members of the military at the urging of the Department of Defense.” Charlene Crowell is the communications deputy director with the Center for Responsible Lending. From an Open Internet, Back to the Dark Ages by JONATHAN COOK Can anyone still doubt that access to a relatively free and open internet is rapidly coming to an end in the west? In China and other autocratic regimes, leaders have simply bent the internet to their will, censoring content that threatens their rule. But in the "democratic" west, it is being done differently. The state does not have to interfere directly - it outsources its dirty work to corporations. As soon as next month, the net could become the exclusive plaything of the biggest such corporations, determined to squeeze as much profit as possible out of bandwith. Meanwhile, the tools to help us engage in critical thinking, dissent and social mobilisation will be taken away as "net neutrality" becomes a historical footnote, a teething phase, in the "maturing" of the internet. In December the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to repeal already compromised regulations that are in place to maintain a semblance of "net neutrality". Its chairman, Ajit Pai, and the corporations that are internet service providers want to sweep away these rules, just like the banking sector got rid of financial regulations so it could inflate our economies into giant ponzi schemes. That could serve as the final blow to the left and its ability to make its voice heard in the public square. It was political leaders - aided by the corporate media - who paved the way to this with their fomenting of a self-serving moral panic about "fake news". Fake news, they argued, appeared only online, not in the pages of the corporate media - the same media that sold us the myth of WMD in Iraq, and has so effectively preserved a single party system with two faces. The public, it seems, needs to be protected only from bloggers and websites. The social media giants soon responded. It is becoming ever clearer that Facebook is interfering as a platform for the dissemination of information for progressive activists. It is already shutting down accounts, and limiting their reach. These trends will only
accelerate. Google has changed its algorithms in ways that have ensured the search engine rankings of prominent leftwing sites are falling through the floor. It is becoming harder and harder to find alternative sources of news because they are being actively hidden from view. Google stepped up that process this week by "deranking" RT and Sputnik, two Russian news sites that provide an important counterweight - even if one skewed in its pro-Russia agenda - to the anti-Russia propaganda spouted by western corporate media. The two sites will be as good as censored on the internet for the vast majority of users. RT is far from a perfect source of news - no state or corporate media is - but it is a vital voice to have online. It has become a sanctuary for many seeking alternative, and often far more honest, critiques both of western domestic policy and of western interference in far-off lands. It has its own political agenda, of course, but, despite the assumption of many western liberals, it provides a far more accurate picture of the world than the western corporate media on a vast range of issues. That is for good reason. Western corporate media is there to shore up prejudices that have been inculcated in western audiences over a lifetime - the chief one being that western states rightfully act as well-meaning, if occasionally bumbling, policemen trying to keep order among other, unruly or outright evil states around the globe. The media and political class can easily tap into these prejudices to persuade us of all sorts of untruths that advance western interests. To take just one example - Iraq. We were told Saddam Hussein had ties to al-Qaeda (he didn't and could not have had); that Iraq was armed with WMD (it wasn't, as UN arms inspectors tried to tell us); and that the US and UK wanted to promote democracy in Iraq (but not before they had stolen its oil). There may have been opposition in the west to the invasion of Iraq, but little (continued in next 2 columns)

RT and other non-western news sources in English provide a different lens through which we can view such important events, perspectives unclouded by a western patrician agenda. They and progressive sites are being gradually silenced and blacklisted, herding us back into the arms of the corporate propagandists. Few liberals have been prepared to raise their voices on behalf of RT, forgetting warnings from history, such as Martin Niemoller's anti-Nazi poem "First they came for the socialists". The existing rules of "net neutrality" are already failing progressives and dissidents, as the developments I have outlined above make clear. But without them, things will get even worse. If the changes are approved next month, internet service providers (ISPs), the corporations that plug us into the internet, will also be able to decide what we should see and what will be out of reach. Much of the debate has focused on the impact of ending the rules on online commercial ventures. That is why Amazon and porn sites like Pornhub have been leading the opposition. But that is overshadowing the more significant threat to progressive sites and already-embattled principles of free speech. ISPs will be given a much freer
hand to determine the content we can can get online. They will be able to slow down the access speeds of sites that are not profitable - which is true for activist sites, by definition. But they may also be empowered to impose Chinese-style censorship, either on their own initiative or under political pressure. The fact that this may be justified on commercial, not political, grounds will offer little succour. Those committed to finding real news may be able to find workarounds. But this is little consolation. The vast majority of people will use the services they are provided with, and be oblivious to what is no longer available. If it takes an age to access a website, they will simply click elsewhere. If a Google search shows them only corporately approved results, they will read what is on offer. If their Facebook feed declines to supply them with "non-profitable" or "fake" content, they will be none the wiser. But all of us who care about the future will be the poorer. County working to bring awareness to preterm birth SB County News November is National Prematurity Awareness Month, a time to refocus efforts and raise awareness of this public health priority. The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is working to bring awareness to the community regarding the high rates of preterm birth within the County. Babies born too early, particularly before 32 weeks, have higher rates of death and disability. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), African-Americans in San Bernardino County had the greatest percentage of babies born premature in 2015 with 12.99 percent, compared to the County’s overall average of 9.58 percent. “I encourage medical providers and County residents to take advantage of Public Health programs aimed at increasing the health of targeted populations.” says San Bernardino County Public Health Officer, Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare. “The Black Infant Health (BIH) Program is designed to address the factors that contribute to increased rates of preterm birth among our African-American residents. The program aims to reduce some of the factors associated with preterm birth that frequently affect African-American women.” There are several factors that contribute to premature birth out-
comes. Some of the factors are stress, tobacco and/or alcohol use, ethnicity, prior preterm births, pregnancy with multiples such as twins and triplets and possibly low maternal income or socioeconomic status. The BIH program is a groupbased education and support intervention that women can be a part of to help reduce their risk of preterm birth. It is entirely free to participants. Mothers of Teens With Autism Report Higher Levels of Stress, Though Optimism Can Be a Buffer New research from UCR’s Jan Blacher suggests a positive outlook can mitigate the psychological effects of parenting a child with autism By Tess Eyrich On NOVEMBER 27, 2017
Mothers of teenagers with autism spectrum disorder report higher levels of stress than mothers of teenagers with typical development, said UCR’s Jan Blacher, but optimism can be a buffer. But factor in a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disability (ID), and you’ll likely have the recipe for a unique set of challenges to the entire family unit. According to autism expert Jan Blacher, a distinguished professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside, the effects of those challenges went largely understudied for years while medical professionals blamed mothers of children diagnosed with ASD for their kids’ disorders. Beginning in the 1950s, doctors turned to psychiatrist Leo Kanner’s “refrigerator mother” theory as evidence that a lack of maternal warmth could essentially cause autism. It wasn’t until the mid-1960s when psychologist Bernard Rimland, among others, began to discredit Kanner ’s theory, instead popularizing the idea that autism could be rooted in neurological development, or even genetics. Decades later, the race to find autism-linked genes continues.
But it doesn’t yet benefit families of kids with ASD, said Blacher and her research colleague, UCLA’s Bruce L. Baker. Within those families, the impacts of raising children with autism hit mothers especially hard, resulting in what Blacher and Baker refer to as “collateral effects.” In a study recently published online in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, the researchers found that mothers of teenagers with ASD or ID reported higher levels of stress and other negative psychological symptoms — think depression or anxiety — than mothers of teenagers with typical development, or TD. Those levels climbed even higher when teenagers with ASD or ID also showed signs of clinical-level disruptive behavior disorders. To find out how such disorders affected mothers, Blacher and Baker surveyed 160 13-year-olds and their families. Eighty-four of the study’s teenage participants were classified as having typical development, or TD; 48 as having ASD; and 28 as having ID. As the director of UCR’s
SEARCH (Support, Education, Advocacy, Resources, Community, and Hope) Family Autism Resource Center, Blacher works with kids of all ages with ASD. She said this study, however, is special because it focuses on a pool of adolescents who are the same age. “Usually when studies have looked at the impacts of autism on families, the children involved have reflected wide ranges of ages,” she said. “Here, we’ve eliminated the variance related to developmental stage.” Blacher and Baker first assessed mothers and their 13-year-olds during in-person visits at their research site, and later asked mothers to complete separate questionnaires privately to measure youth behavior problems and parental well-being. “ASD group mothers scored highest on each of the two distress indicators,” the researchers wrote, adding that ASD group mothers’ levels of stress and psychological symptoms did not differ significantly from those of ID group mothers. The findings harken back to research demonstrating that parents of children with ASD have
reported levels of stress consistent with those of individuals who experience post-traumatic stress disorder. What’s more, mothers’ levels of parenting-related stress and other psychological symptoms were amplified by the presence of one or more clinical-level behavior disorders, Blacher and Baker said. “The most common disruptive behavior disorder is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, but children with autism can also show signs of oppositional defiant disorder, depression, and anxiety,” Blacher said. “The disorders that are most disruptive to parents are those we describe as ‘acting out’ disorders and involve behaviors like not following rules, hitting, screaming, arguing, lashing out, and breaking things.” Still, the researchers emphasized that parents who face childrearing challenges need not resign themselves to lifetimes of mounting stress. The mothers they studied who demonstrated more resilience had one thing in common: an optimistic outlook on life. Using the Life Orientation Test, which assesses individuals’ optimism or pessimism, Blacher and Baker found that mothers who were more optimistic — believing that good rather than bad things would happen to them — experienced fewer negative impacts associated with parenting a child with ASD or ID and comorbid behavior disorders. In those cases, a more positive outlook on life became a buffer against parenting-related stressors. “It’s in the face of stress when optimism really becomes important,” Blacher said. “A mom that has a high level of optimism is going to be able to better weather stress and be better prepared mentally for the challenges ahead.” This research was funded by a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, one of the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Chalfonte LeNee Queen of San Diego says she grappled with violent vomiting episodes for the better part of two decades, until she found out her illness was related to her marijuana use. (Pauline Bartolone/ California Healthline) For 17 years, Chalfonte LeNee Queen suffered periodic episodes of violent retching and abdominal pain that would knock her off her feet for days, sometimes leaving her writhing on the floor in pain. “I’ve screamed out for death,” said Queen, 48, who lives in San Diego. “I’ve cried out for my mom who’s been dead for 20 years, mentally not realizing she can’t come to me.” Queen lost a modeling job after being mistaken for an alcoholic. She racked up tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills, and her nausea interrupted her sex life. Toward the end of her illness, Queen, who stands 5-foot-9, weighed in at a frail 109 pounds. Throughout the nearly two decades of pain, vomiting and mental fog, she visited the hospital about three times a year, but doctors never got to the bottom of what was ailing her. By 2016, she thought she was dying, that she
“must have some sort of cancer or something they can’t detect,” Queen said. But she didn’t have cancer. She had an obscure syndrome called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, a condition only recently acknowledged by the medical community. It affects a small population — namely, a subset of marijuana users who smoke multiple times a day for months, years or even decades. There’s no hard data on the prevalence of the illness. But in California and Colorado, which have loosened marijuana laws in recent years, emergency physicians say they’re seeing it more often. One study in Colorado suggests there may be a link. Dr. Aimee Moulin, an emergency room physician at UCDavis Medical Center in Sacramento, said she has seen a rise in the number of cases since California voters legalized recreational marijuana last November.

She expects to see another increase after commercial sales are permitted starting in January. Doctors say it’s difficult to treat the condition. There is no cure other than to quit using marijuana, and many patients are skeptical that cannabis is making them sick, so they keep using it and their vomiting episodes continue. Doctors can do little to relieve the symptoms, since traditional anti-nausea medications often don’t work and there are no pills to prevent the onset of an episode. Patients may need intravenous hydration and hospital stays until the symptoms subside. “That’s really frustrating as an emergency physician,” said Moulin. “I really like to make people feel better.” Diagnosing the syndrome can also be frustrating — and expensive. There is no blood test to link the stomach ailment with marijuana use, so physicians often order pricey CT scans and lab
tests to rule out other medical problems. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome was first documented in Australia in 2004. Physicians have historically misdiagnosed it as the more generic cyclic vomiting syndrome, which has no identifiable cause or, as in Queen’s case, acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). “Five years ago, this wasn’t something that [doctors] had on their radar,” said Dr. Kennon Heard, an emergency physician at the University of Colorado in Aurora, who co-authored the Colorado study showing a possible tie between the liberalization of marijuana and a surge of the vomiting illness. “We’re at least making the diagnosis more now.” One surefire sign of the illness is when patients find relief in hot showers and baths. Toxicologists say the heat may distract the brain from pain receptors in the abdomen but, like the syndrome itself, that phenomenon is not well understood. The exact cause of the condition is still a mystery. Toxicologists say the chemical compounds in marijuana may throw off the normal function of the body’s cannabinoid receptors, which help regulate the nervous system. Some people may be genetically predisposed to the syndrome, or marijuana’s potency or chemical makeup may have changed over time, said Dr. Craig Smollin, medical director of the San Francisco division of the California Poison Control System, who also works as an emergency physician at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. The vomiting link to cannabis is counterintuitive to many, because of its widely known reputation as an anti-nausea remedy for cancer patients. Even after being told that quitting may help, some patients will visit the hospital multiple times before they stop smoking marijuana, Coburn said. “I can’t really tell you why. I mean, why do people ride motorcycles without helmets on?” Cameron Nicole Beard, 19, of East Moline, Ill., said she struggled to believe her doctors about the link between pot and
severe vomiting. “Who wants to be told you can’t smoke marijuana, when you think marijuana can help?” said Beard, while recovering from a marijuana-related vomiting episode at a University of Iowa hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, last month. She said she had lost 20 pounds in 10 days. Although there’s still no magic cure for a patient’s marijuana-related hyperemesis, Moulin and other doctors say they’re getting better at treating the symptoms, using old anti-psychotic medications and cream for muscle aches. Dr. Heard said the cases in Colorado seem to have leveled off. But without hard data, and because the overall numbers are small, it’s hard to say for sure. Heard said he doesn’t believe cases of the pot syndrome increased after recreational use was legalized in 2012, because chronic users probably already had medical marijuana cards. Chalfonte LeNee Queen is still struggling to completely quit marijuana, but her symptoms are down to a dull stomachache. She now smokes a couple of times a day, compared with her near-constant use in the past. She said it’s the only thing that works for her depression and anxiety. Queen is back to a healthy weight and hasn’t been to the hospital in a year. How To File a Fictitious Business Name in California You must register an assumed name within 40 days of starting to conduct business (which can be different from the date of forming your business entity). For 30 days after registering, you must run a weekly notice in a newspaper of record for the county, and attest this afterwards by affidavit to the Clerk. The registration must be renewed every 5 years, but newspaper publication is not required unless details have changed. Registering a fictitious business name does not create a business entity. The document is actually known as a "statement" and it purely creates a record that gives the general public a way to know who they're dealing with, as well as allowing formal process to reach through a brand name to the legal structure underlying it. Additional statements can be filed to record that the assumed name has now been abandoned, or that a partner has withdrawn from a partnership operating under a fictitious business name, and is no longer to be connected with that name. FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME REQUIREMENTS A fictitious business name cannot be the same as a name already in use, or so similar as to confuse or mislead. And while certain legal designations such as "Inc" and "LLC" cannot be used unless you are such an entity, certain unsupported designations such as "Company" or "Ltd" are allowed in California. If you're a self-employed contractor, you're a sole proprietorship by default, and the name of the legal "entity" doing business is you, under your name. You can use a business name that includes your surname without needing to register a fictitious name - for example, "John Doe Cars". But to obscure the name ("JD Cars") or to imply more owners or a different structure ("Doe & Sons", "Doe & Associates", "Doe Company") will require recording the name as an FBN. Frequently a sole proprietorship will do business under a fictitious name for ease of transactions. A partnership is also legally named from its owners' names, and will often make a similar choice. Filing an FBN will usually be necessary before a bank will open a business account under the assumed name. Obviously a business wants to receive payments made out to its trade name - and this is increasingly common with Internet domain-name branding, when many business names have a “DotCom” attached to them. Corporations and LLCs can choose their business name when they file their Articles to form the entity. But frequently they'll want to adopt a different name, or many such names, for branding or trademark reasons. If a company is launching a new product or service, marketing decisions may call for a new brand name. Or, if John Doe Texas wants to expand operations into California and finds John Doe California already in business use, a new fictitious business name will be required. HOW TO REGISTER YOUR FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME State law (California Business And Professions Code Sections 17900-17930) requires you to register with the Clerk of the county housing your principal place of business, or with San Bernardino County if you're an out-of-state company. There's no limit to the number of names you can register, provided they're available and meet relevant criteria. The recording fee is set by law , but individual counties will vary . San Bernardino County, for example, charges $55, and $10 for each additional name in the same filing. Registration forms also vary by county. Jennifer Hudson and ex-fiance David Otunga have finally reached an agreement in their ongoing custody battle involving their 8-year-old son, David Otugna Jr., TMZ reports. Otunga was granted temporary primary custody, due to Hudson’s busy travel schedule. The former wrestler and reality star contestant claimed he was the
primary caretaker since their son’s birth, culminating during the years of Hudson’s career. The singer is currently filming the new season of “The Voice,” traveling back and forth from London to Los Angeles. OBITUARY Raymond Samuel Harper
Raymond Samuel Harper, 73, of Rialto, CA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his entire family, after an extended illness on November 16, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Phyllis Harper. A native of Boley, Oklahoma, Raymond lived in San Bernardino, CA as a child and resided in Rialto, CA. at the time of his passing. R a y m o n d owned Quality Transmission which he opened in 1970 on Mt. Vernon Avenue and worked there until his illness required his retirement in 2007. Raymond was baptized at an early age at the 11th Street Church of Christ in San Bernardino. He was a 1963
graduate of Pacific High School. Raymond enjoyed auto racing at the Fontana drag strip (renamed Fontana Speedway), and rebuilding classic cars. Raymond was a gentle giant--soft spoken with a kind heart. He deeply loved his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Christine Blake-Harper; three daughters, Patrice Harper-McKinstry of San Bernardino, CA., Raychelle (Samuel) Addo, of Riverside, and Clarissa (Christopher) Agard of Apple Valley, CA; four sisters, Fredda (Arthur) Davis of Walnut, CA., Thelma (Webster) Guillory of Newport Beach, CA., Patricia (Keith) Nickols-Butler of Loma Linda CA; three brothers, Charles “Larry” of San Bernardino, CA., Michael of Antioch, CA., Edward of Concord, CA; one granddaughter and six grandsons. For those who are so busy living from day to day who forget how completely fragile and uncertain life is. W isdom is calling aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open squares. She cries out in the chief concourses, at the opening of the gates in the city, she speaks her words, “How long, you simple one, will you love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn ye at my reproof: behold I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.” [Proverbs 1:20-23] … For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. [James 4:14]. Think about that for a moment. Your life, here one minute and gone the next. Listen, there are two choices in life presented by Jesus [Matthew 7:13-14]. One grounded in human understanding, and one grounded in heavenly understanding - [Romans. 14:12] [2 Corinthians 5:10]. If this message is anything, it is a challenge to begin the process of moving your life closer to the way God wants you to live it. You see when God gave the 10 Commandments at Mount Sinai, He thundered these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me” [Exodus 20:2-3]. God does not want us to place anything before Him. His desire is that we worship Him and Him alone. He must come first in our life. This is
the same message that the Book of Haggai, communicates: Put first things first. It was written to people like us, who live with misplaced priorities. Jesus said the same thing: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness…. [Matthew 6:33]. I tell you, it’s time for you to do some serious selfexamination before the Lord. Consider your ways [Haggai 1:5, 7]. Stop long enough in your busy schedule and evaluate your life in light of God’s Word. Measure the consequences of your actions. Because when death nears, [here one minute, gone the next] priorities change. What used to seem significant may dim in comparison to one’s ultimate fate…. Check yourself before you wreck yourself! The Price of Freedom? Rev. James Moos Executive Minister, Wider Church Ministries Co-Executive, Global Ministries On the evening of October 1st, a lone gunman opened fire on a crowd in Las Vegas, killing 58 concertgoers and injuring another 546 in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. In the aftermath, commentator Bill O'Reilly declared the carnage to be "the price of freedom." He further stated that "even the loons" have the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Ordinary people doing ordinary things are the most frequent victims of mass shootings. Parishioners in Virginia gather for a prayer service: 9 are killed. Elementary school children and teachers in Connecticut go off for another day in school: 26 never make it back home. People in Florida have a night out on the town: 49 end up dead. A congregation gathers for worship in Texas: 26 lives end. Is this the freedom you celebrate, Mr. O'Reilly? It's well known that the United States has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world, with 100 guns per every 101 residents; no other country even comes close. The National Rifle Association has long claimed that increased gun ownership does not lead to more gun violence, but the evidence indicates otherwise. In the largest study of its kind covering 30 years of data, the Boston University School of Public Health concludes that there is a direct correlation between levels of gun ownership and firearms violence: the more guns per capita, the more gun deaths occur. Even so, the debate over restric-
tions of gun ownership is moribund, the White House declaring in the wake of the Las Vegas shooting that it wasn't the right time to debate gun laws; the right time never seems to come. There was some movement toward banning the "bump-stock" attachment that turned the Las Vegas shooter's semi-automatic assault rifles into fully automatic ones, but they are still legal and there are currently no steps being taken to outlaw them. Typically, gun rights advocates quote only the second half of the Second Amendment: "[…] the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The first half of the Amendment gives context to those familiar words: "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state.." A well-regulated militia is, in our day, the National Guard; the dangerous fringe elements of society that Mr. O'Reilly believes should have unfettered access to guns are anything but necessary to the security of a free state. In 1941 as World War II raged and the U.S. contemplated entry, President Roosevelt gave his famous "Four Freedoms" speech, the fourth being freedom from fear. As long as parents must worry about the safety of children in school, as long as not even a church sanctuary is a safe space, we do not enjoy that freedom. Mass shootings aren't the price of freedom, they are the cost of our society's unwillingness to come to terms with its gun obsession.

Los Angeles, CA - The Justice 4 Gemmel + All of Ed Buck’s Victim’s advocacy group has announced that the Chair of the African American Caucus of the California Democratic Party, Darren Parker, will author a resolution on behalf of the Caucus calling on the Party as a whole to return the money of prominent donor Ed Buck and to publicly support the family of Gemmel Moore and all of Buck’s victims. This comes after the group’s media consultant, political communications strategist Jasmyne Cannick spoke before the Caucus at the Fall/Winter Executive Board Meeting of the California Democratic Party at the invitation of Parker and Chair of the California Young Democrats’ Black Caucus Devin T. Murphy. “Too often there are ills in the African American community that we just don’t discuss,” explained Darren Parker. “These issues that we don’t bring to the surface are starting to define what happens to our people. So I thought it was important--one, as a chair who believes in transparency, who believes in education even in adversity that we have to talk about the things that we’re uncomfortable with or even hearing about.” “The issue of the young man had been coming up but had been pushed under the rug by many different factors over the last few months,” Parker continued. “So then opportunity came up where it was challenged what is the African American Caucus going to do? My first response was to put it on the agenda. It’s something in our community that we’ve been reluctant to talk about--lifestyles, what happens to our kids, what happens to our brothers and sisters. We tend to talk about it amongst ourselves but not challenge those people that in fact cause the issues that we’re having. I thought it was important that we bring it to forefront--not only at the Caucus but as part of the California Democratic Party because it hadn’t been talked about and the facts are the facts and they’re not going to go away. But if we can make sure by having this conversation that one more young brotha won’t have to go through that happened to [Gemmel Moore] then we’ve truly done our jobs. And until we step up to the plate and bring those things that affect our community to the attention of others that cause those problems, we will continue to suffer and that’s why

Murphy. “Gemmel Moore was a young Black gay man who died in the home of one of our Party’s donors. We have a responsibility not only to Gemmel’s family and friends but to African Americans, African American Democrats and Democrats period to not only talk the talk when it comes to our Party’s values but to also walk the walk. We cannot and should not be taking money from a man who clearly is hurting people--in particular Black gay men. All Black lives matter.” Evan Minton, Northern California Chair of the California Democratic Party’s LGBT Caucus added, “Especially in the wake of the Me Too movement, we need to remember that troubling actions involving power and control can take place between and among all genders and gender identities. Further, we need to bring to light and take just as seriously each aspect of Mr. Moore's case as we would if the alleged perpetrator were Black and the alleged victim were White.” Gemmel Moore was found dead of a crystal meth overdose in Ed Buck’s West Hollywood home on July 27. His death was immediately classified as an accidental methamphetamine overdose by the coroner, but after his personal journal was published and other young men stepped forward recounting similar stories about a man who they say has a Tuskegee Experiment like fetish which includes shooting drugs into young Black men that he picks up off the street or via dating hookup websites, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department’s opened a homicide investigation. The coroner’s report on Gemmel Moore’s death corroborates Gemmel’s chilling words from his journal describing the violence he experienced at the hands of Ed Buck. “In his journal, Moore wrote, ‘I honestly don’t know what to do. But there were many people— including conservatives, people profiled in the New York Times and original-recipe white people—who didn’t find anything offensive about the slur. “How can a name be racist?” racists asked. To settle the confusion, we thought we’d explain why Donald Trump’s reference to Warren as Pocahontas is racist. Who was Pocahontas? She was an actual Native American woman in the area we now call Virginia known as Tsenacommacah. When the first white settlers landed in America, they showed the Native Americans how they were going to act for the next 500 or so years by kidnapping a teenager name Matoaka and holding her for ransom. The Jamestown settlers renamed her “Rebecca.” No, I’m serious—they actually kidnapped a
woman and tried to name her “Becky.” However, the Powhatan people told the Jamestonians that Matoaka’s name was “Pocahontas,” which loosely translates to “stolen by thievingass wypipo” (my Powhatan is a little rusty). What does that have to do with Elizabeth Warren? As a Harvard University professor, Elizabeth Warren was listed by the college as a minority professor because she claimed Native American ancestry. During her initial run for the Senate, her Republican opponent seized on this fact because ... um ... you know how they do. They tried to say it had something to do with fake diversity, dishonesty or affirmative action. They actually tried to get her to take a DNA test because white people apparently believe that Native American blood is redder or has feathers or something (the GOP is traditionally very bad at science-ing). But is she Native American? Who knows? She says that her parents and grandparents always told her about her Native American heritage. The New England Historic Genealogical Society’s Chris Child said he’d found a document stating that she has a great-great-great-grandmother who is Native American, which would make her 1/32 Cherokee according to the “one-drop rule” of the Federation for Unscientific Cursory Knowledge for White American Definitions, or F**KWADS. NEHGS later backtracked on that claim when it could find no proof of the alleged document. It goes on to note that Issa has previously accepted thousands of dollars from the gun lobby and is supporting their agenda. That includes being a cosponsor of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 that would allow dangerous individuals - like stalkers, domestic abusers, people who have committed violent crimes, and people with no firearms training at all - to carry loaded, hidden guns in public places. On Wednesday morning, the House Judiciary Committee, of which Issa is a member, will take up the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. The bill is opposed by law enforcement leaders across the country who say it will put officers at risk and make communities less safe. It creates a threat to public safety by forcing states with strong concealed carry laws to honor permits from states with weak or nonexistent concealed carry laws, undermining current state permitting standards. “Right now Darrell Issa is more concerned about pleasing gun lobbyists that send him checks than listening to his constituents who want safer communities,” said Peter Ambler, Executive Director, Giffords. “That means weakening our nation’s gun laws and moving us backwards. Photo by Simone Orendain/VOACaption Chicago has been dubbed “Chiraq” by some because of its alarming violent crime rate and how often its citizens are either victims or perpetrators of murder. The nickname combines the names for the nation’s third-most populous city and the war-torn country of Iraq to suggest it is the most violent city in the United States. There were 765 murders in Chicago in 2016, by far the most murders in any U.S. city that year. It was a dramatic increase in the number of murders over the previous year and the preceding years, which, since 2003, hovered around 500 annually. The prevalence of street gangs
such as the Black Stones, Vice Lords and Gangster Disciples fuels Chicago’s reputation for violence. Gang culture in Chicago is rampant, and it is often glorified by rappers such as Chief Keef and G Herbo, who tell violent stories of what they experienced growing up in the city. Movies such as “Chi-Raq,” a 2015 Spike Lee film, furthered the stereotype of violence and corruption within Chicago. One of the most high-profile murders was the killing of Hadiya Pendleton,15, who was shot in the back and killed in 2013 while standing with friends inside Harsh Park in the city’s Kenwood section. Pendleton was killed

Currently, states have the right to choose which states’ concealed carry permits they recognize, which is important because the requirements to carry hidden, loaded guns in public vary drastically from state to state. If the concealed carry reciprocity bill passes, that will no longer be the case, and California will be forced to allow unlicensed, unvetted people from out of state to carry guns in public places. As of today, 12 states—including California’s neighbor, Arizona—do not require any permit or training to carry hidden, loaded guns in public. If this bill becomes federal law, almost any person from these states would be automatically authorized to carry concealed in California, regardless of whether that person meets California’s standards for what it takes to carry a concealed gun in public. Current California law does not allow those with concealed carry permits issued by other states to carry in California. If the concealed carry reciprocity bill passes, California would be federally mandated to honor the weak or nonexistent concealed carry standards of other states, making California less safe and putting law enforcement at risk. Chicago probation officer Eric Anthony called the violence occurring in the city “ridiculous.” “People are out here killing each other for no reason,” Anthony said. “With high school girls like Hadiya Pendleton being killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, it’s hard to let your kids out of your sight here!” Despite the perception, Chicago is not the murder capital of the United States. It’s not even in the top 10 most murderous major cities, according to the FBI Uni-

Chicago’s murder rate ranks lower than the rates in Washington; Milwaukee; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Cleveland; Newark, New Jersey; Birmingham, Alabama; New Orleans; Detroit; Baltimore; and St. Louis. Chicago’s murder rate is 28 deaths per 100,000 people. Baltimore, at 59 deaths per 100,000, St. Louis, at 51 deaths per 100,000, and even the nation’s capital, at 30 deaths per 100,000, rank higher. Nor does Chicago lead the nation in violent crimes, defined by the FBI as murders, robberies, rapes and aggravated assaults. That dubious distinction falls to St. Louis, with 1,913 violent crimes for every 100,000 people. It is followed by Baltimore at 1,780, Milwaukee at 1,533, and Washington, D.C., at 1,132. According to the UCR, Chicago’s violent crime rate sat at 1,105 per 100,000 last year. Yes, the data certainly shows that Chicago has earned its reputation as a violent place. But truth be told, the Windy City is not even in the top 3 among the nation’s most violent cities. She does say she used it as a professor to “connect” with students. None of this explains why Trump calls her Pocahontas. Warren is one of the most popular Democrats and one of the few people in either party who will call Trump out using logic and plain talk. Instead of calling him a racist, she talks about his policies. That’s scary for him. Trump likes to use nicknames, so he attacks her with the only negative thing he can use against her. He’s literally like a third-grader chasing people around the playground with doo-doo on a stick. That’s not an analogy. White House insiders have told me that he actually keeps a dookey wand by his bedside instead of a gun. OK, that last sentence is not true. But if you found out it was, would you be surprised? Exactly. But why is this racist? Because calling someone by a stereotypical name that is not their own because of their alleged ethnic or racial background is racist. If someone called me “Leroy,” I’m fighting. Well, I’m over 40 now, so I probably wouldn’t fight them, but I’d want to.* *Please don’t hold me to the “I probably wouldn’t fight ... ” part of that statement. I try to take the high road, but when they go low, I go high. And by “high” I mean the punches to the throat or jaw area. It’s as if Trump went to a Holocaust survivors’ memorial and reminded them that they weren’t the only ones who were murdered, or went into a room filled with Jews and said, “Hey, I like the Jews! My daughter had sex with one!” (Bad examples. He actually did both of those things.) But here is the biggest reason

In May the National Congress of American Indians said in a statement: “The name of Pocahontas should not be used as a slur, and it is inappropriate for anyone to use her name in a disparaging manner.” After the incident Monday, NCAI President Jefferson Keel, a U.S. Army officer and Vietnam War veteran, stated: “We regret that the president’s use of the name Pocahontas as a slur to insult a political adversary is overshadowing the true purpose of today’s White House ceremony.” Mr. Trump mentioned Elizabeth Warren during an event honoring WWII Native American code talkers.… Despite what Eric Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders say, Trump’s name-calling is racist. Many white people like Trump will often excuse their racism by saying, “I’m not prejudiced.” They will vehemently argue their point about why their actions shouldn’t be considered racist. Why? Because many white people actually believe it. It’s as if Mike Tyson punched a baby in the head and got mad when the baby cried because it was just a left-handed jab, not his knockout punch. They honestly believe that they can decide for nonwhite people whether something is racist or not. Not only do they think they can do whatever they want, but they also believe that they should be able to control people’s responses to their actions. And if you think I’ve contradicted myself by stereotyping white people, you might be right. I might be a little bit racist.
