A Black FedEx driver, Timothy Warren, was justified in punching Joseph Magnuson after he called him a "f***ing ni**er" and tried to hit Warren first, according to prosecutors in Multnomah County, Oregon. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office announced last week that there's no indication Warren intended to kill Magnuson and he will not be charged with a crime, The Washington Post reported. The encounter started when Magnuson yelled at Warren to slow down as he drove his truck through a Portland neighborhood. According to witnesses, Magnuson would not

back down and continued to berate the driver prompting Warren to get out of his truck. After Magnuson took a swing, Warren punched him square in the face knocking him unconscious. Magnuson died later that day. The medical examiner concluded that Magnuson's poor health contributed to his death and not the punch an according to prosecutors, Warren, 41, has not been charged with a crime as he did not intend to kill Magnuson, 55, and acted in self-defense. "Mr. Magnuson's actions, as reported by all three witnesses and Mr. Warren, gave rise to a reasonable belief on Mr. Warren's part that a limited use of force was necessary to prevent injury to himself," Gibbs wrote.

People who are too ignorant to respect themselves should be ignored if there are no signs of physical harm to anyone. Mr. Warren encountering Mr. Magnuson added fuel to Mr. Magnuson's ignorance which lead to his demise.

That’s how I’ve been for the last two days as rumor on the internet swirls around Mississippi Governor, Phil Bryant. Bryant has made news in his own right with his extremely puritan Christian policies but now people are talking about him for a different reason. Last week it came out that Carolyn Bryant Donham, then just Bryant, the woman who was the center of the Emmet Till murder trial, lied about Till whistling at her. News of Downham’s statement was released as part of an interview for promotion of a new book expected to hit shelves this week. Dr. Timothy Tyson interviewed Carolyn in 2007 in preparation for his upcoming book, “The Blood of Emmet Till.” For the first time, the woman whose husband and brother-in-law kidnapped a 14-year-old boy from his bed and brutally murdered him, in her honor, admitted her lie.

Subdued migrants at Tijuana border camp mull options By Patrick Timmons

Photo by Patrick Timmons/UPI TIJUANA, Mexico, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Central American migrants camped in Tijuana, Mexico, on the border with San Diego, Calif., were subdued Monday, a day after U.S. authorities threw tear gas at them as they approached the international line.

Some migrants have given up on trying to seek asylum in the United States. "I'm going to seek asylum in Mexico," Osvin Herrera of Honduras told UPI. "And they are going to give me papers and a year's work permit. If the United States doesn't want us, I'm go-

ing to stay here. I want to go work in Guadalajara. I'm headed for my asylum interview right now." Herrera said he was a carpenter and painter in Honduras but he could not find any work. Meanwhile, Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum issued a call for help from Mexico's federal government. "We need food, water, blankets and a dignified place for people to sleep," he said. "This is the responsibility of Mexico's government." The mayor told UPI the city has no plans to evict the migrants from the camp, but said that was ultimately up to federal authorities. Monday morning, many more migrants were lining up for food outside the camp than speaking to Mexican immigration authorities about asylum. Several migrants told UPI they worry Mexican authorities

will seek to remove them from the camp and deport them after Sunday's march, the surge at the border, and the use of force in response by U.S. authorities. "Do you know if they are going to deport us?" asked Melanie Murillo Hernandez, a university student from Honduras who is pregnant and seeking a better life for her child. "I don't want to leave the camp as I've heard there are lots of police outside." Chief Border Patrol Agent Rodney Scott of the San Diego area defended the use of tear gas, telling CNN that migrants were throwing rocks or debris at officers. The San Ysidro Port of Entry was closed for several hours. On Monday, city and federal police, accompanied by Mexi(continued on page 8)

Carolyn Bryant in 2012 Many people hadn’t even realized the 82-year-old Carolyn Bryant (Donham) was still alive. The impending release of the book has brought her and Till’s murder back into the public spotlight again. As it often happens when rehashing historical events, people have been talking about the key players after the murder and trial. One name on a lot of lips is Phil Bryant. Roy Bryant, Carolyn’s then husband, later admitted that he and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, beat and murdered Emmet Till after kidnapping him from a relative’s home. At least a year ago, someone started asking online if Mississippi Governor, Phil Bryant was really the nephew

of Roy and Carolyn Bryant. I started to do my research and indeed, Roy Bryant had a sister named Estelle Bryant. Estelle Bryant, of Moorhead Mississippi, also happens to be the name of Governor Bryant’s mother. Hearing the rumors, I started watching and digging at the same time. Watching for Governor Bryant to refute the claims and say that his mother was a different Estelle Bryant. Digging to see if I could find any concrete proof other than a much-shared tweet. While I watched and waited for Governor Bryant to make a public statement, I took note and screen shots at some of the messages he was receiving and ignoring on social media. It has been at least three days that people and constituents have been asking online if Bryant indeed in the nephew of Roy Bryant. Governor Bryant is silent on the issue. Finding a concrete answer was not easy and that in itself made me very suspect. In today’s world, it is very rare to not be able to find information on the internet unless someone important doesn’t want it found. No matter where I looked the only thing, I could find out about Governor Phil Bryant’s mother is that Estelle R. Bryant was a homemaker who raised three boys. After two hours of searching for more information about not only Estelle Bryant, but more information about Governor Bryant’s childhood I was almost ready to give up. I’m glad I didn’t. What I found was first this Everpedia page. Now Everpedia is generally great information but I know the owner and I have an Everpedia page of my own so I didn’t want to show bias. I needed an outside source, something else I could give my readers as verification. At the bottom of the Everpedia page were reference links, I followed one in particular and struck gold. In June of last year, a Washington based news station WKYC, reported on a USA Today story about the confederate flag debate in South Carolina. In the article was trea(continued on page 3)

Be Sure to Follow Your Passion, No Matter What By Jennifer L. Warren

Town of Newburgh resident, Madison Bishop, has received unwavering support from her parents, Patricia and Howard, with her singing aspirations. The talented sixth grader, who attends Tuxedo Park School, has performed at a host of locations across the country, singing everything from Christian melodies to The Star Spangled Banner. NEWBURGH – Some kids constantly fidget before a test. Others anxiously look over their notes. Madison Bishop prefers to sing. “I like to sing in my head when there is a problem going on, such as before taking a test,” explained the eleven year old Tuxedo Park School sixth grader. “I actually like to hum, and I can be very loud, so my classmates will tell me to quiet down; I get a lot of that from them, but I just keep going cause it’s very stress relieving.” It’s also a past time that is an inherent gift that Bishop has been diligently refining since age three. Not long after her induction into the singing realm, the dedicated Bishop was taking the stage at age four, singing the National Anthem in front of a large crowd, a feat that felt very natural and comfortable. “She was always singing and humming any songs at all she heard on television,” recalled her mother Patricia. “She always pronounced things very clearly, we never really had to correct things with her; she just got it.” That crystal clarity continued to bloom through Bishop’s early elementary school years. as she performed in an assortment of impressive venues, mainly churches, across the country, including; Georgia, Texas, Houston and Connecticut. In 2012, her talents were showcased at the Installation of the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City. Amazingly, at just age six, she was able to stay calm, making impromptu adjustments, singing with the crowd, despite their slower version of the National Anthem. Her talents have even landed her gigs beyond the United States borders, in Trinidad, the homeland of her father, Howard. Here, she performed several times at 100 plus years birthday celebrations for her father’s grandmother, her great-grandmother. In fourth grade, she appeared in her first school talent show,

providing a mesmerizing rendition of the classic hit, “Let it Go,” from the movie “Frozen.” “To this day, people at her school still talk about how amazing that performance was,” recollected her mother Patricia. In addition to being able to mesmerize listeners with her unique sound as well as perform in an extemporaneous manner, the young Bishop has also displayed an ease with bringing her singing game to large crowds. At age seven, she performed in front of approximately 4000 people at the 70th Anniversary of the North Eastern Conference Seventh-Day Adventist, unfazed by the massive audience, thoroughly absorbed in her passion. Bishop’s singing career took yet another upward swing last winter in March, 2017 when she got accepted into the American Choir Director’s Association, selected as one of 300 from a pool of 5,000 applicants. Traveling out to frigid temperatures in Minnesota for the event, Bishop spent long days practicing and honing her singing craft, completely absorbed in her tasks and never once complaining about the work. Most recently, she has taken her singing craft up still another notch, taking lessons from acclaimed Broadway and opera singer, Elex Lee Vann. Bishop, fast becoming a student of singing, is quick to cite the gains she has made from Vann’s influence. “I have learned to control my voice, gestures and breathing,” explained Bishop. “He has also taught me how to do gestures from the heart; he is very, very knowledgeable and has been extremely helpful in many ways.” Help has come close to home as well. Bishop’s father, a singer himself, has served as a mentor, as have his three sisters (her aunts), all who sing. With a favorite genre of Christian music, Bishop further derives inspiration from the industry; Sandy Patti is one of her favorite gospel sing-

Teaming up with friends Ashley and Nya, the trio have formed a group called “God’s Girls,” each brings a different harmony that smoothly comes together to form a beautiful sound which has been well received at an array of events. Despite all of Bishop’s early, rapid successes, that climb has not been without obstacles. Living with asthma, she does have to use an inhaler on occasion. At times it has affected her performance; however, for the most part she has overcome any setback it has created. That perseverance in many ways mimics the type of fortitude, maturity and positivity that embodies Bishop’s approach to singing in general. “The key to being successful is

it can’t be work; you have to enjoy it, and practice and dedication are so important,” said Bishop. “It can be very hard to hit and hold the high notes for such a long time, but the more you practice, the easier it gets.” Reflecting further, the poised Bishop, smiled, adding, “Also, mistakes are going to happen, but you have to be cool with it, and be able to learn from it.” If you have not had the pleasure of hearing Bishop’s singing, you have an opportunity to do so locally, later this month. On February 28, she will be performing the National Anthem at the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park for the State of the County Address to be delivered by Dutchess County Executive, Marc Molinaro. Douglas Wilder was forced to wonder aloud – on social media and his own website – about racism at a prominent commonwealth school after a black professor was questioned regarding whether she really was a faculty member. “The recent experience at [Virginia Commonwealth University] is shocking,” said Wilder, who expressed his displeasure on Twitter and on his own website, Wilder Visions. Caitlin Cherry, a black VCUarts visiting professor, said a colleague called campus security on her while she ate breakfast in her assigned classroom earlier this month. The professor said Javier Tapia, a white-Hispanic professor, walked into the classroom and did not respond to her greeting before leaving. Minutes later, a security guard entered the room and asked her if she was a faculty member, and to see her identification.

The entire episode was first reported in a Wilder Visions column written by contributor Sara Elson. Cherry said she told Shawn Brixey, the school’s dean, what happened. She said Brixey apologized and promised an investigation, according to Elson’s column. VCUarts then turned the investigation over to VCU Equity and Access Services, a university spokesperson confirmed — the investigation is ongoing. Tapia declined comment on the situation. “Had I not have had my ID … I don’t know what could have happened,” Cherry said. “I feel a lot of different ways about this, particularly as a black woman, because now the situation escalates to the point of people dying.” Elson pointed out that the event has since prompted outrage among students, and an apology from the arts department. With no filtering in place, Starbucks continues to serve up free, unrestricted WiFi to its customers, opening up the door for patrons to view graphic or obscene pornography, view or distribute child pornography (an illegal crime) or engage in sexual predation activity. Additionally,

filtered WiFi offers businesses like Starbucks the ability to offer secure WiFi access to prevent hackers and identity thieves from invading the privacy of Starbucks patrons. EIE is once again calling on people nationwide to sign a petition calling on Starbucks to follow through on its commitment to filter. “We demand Starbucks do the right thing by keeping its promise of two and half years ago,” said Hughes. “We applaud Starbucks commitment to protect children in its UK stores, but what about America’s children? Black Scholar Says U.S. Economy Will Crash Sooner Than You Think By Dr. Charles L. Singleton

Nationwide -- Yes, emphatically speaking, the next financial crash of our United States of America (USA) economy is coming sooner than you think. One would ask, "How does this opposite the editorial (op-ed) page writer thinks?" Observably, this is how he thinks: Looking back over the last 11 years, our USA economy is still recovering from its "Great Recession of 2007-2009." Which simply means, the stock market observable failures (pseudo or artificial values in the equities and other financial sectors; suppressed income and wages, overvalued real estate, and accumulative generational debt), are still with us in my opinion. In my view from the helm, the USA economy is also sailing rapidly toward overcrowded metropolitan traffic; congested gridlock with failing and outdated infrastructure, and increased taxation. Now, are you ready for this Opinion Ed writer's observations and predictions for the USA economy? Simply stated, our present economic recovery is merely temporary at best, if we are not more careful. Because, we have gone to an 8th deadly sin: impulsivity, along with instant gratification, which means excessively buying those things we really want; instead of what we really need. For many of us, we truly believe, the seven deadly sins are as follows: envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath. Seriously, this type of human behavior festers septically our innate ability to persevere; instead, we consume more than we can ever pay for or charge on credit cards and other lines of credit. In addition, we have completely saturated another generation with a cycle of

student loan debt, rapidly increasing rents, ballooning mortgage and car payments, overpriced goods and services, and increasing medical bills for the young, the elderly and the dying. You see my friends, the recent store closings in 2018 of Walmart's Sam's Clubs; Kmart, Macy's, Toy R Us and Sears stores: chapter 13 bankruptcy; Publix, a major grocery store chain in GA, BI-LO's "bankrupted stores" of Southeastern Grocers, SC, plus many others: both major retail outlets and a variety of local stores across the county are just the tip of the massive iceberg of economic collapse. The tremendous undercurrent of "I've got to have it now, regardless," will eventually, erase the stability and gradual continuous recovery of the USA economy, within 9 to 13 months from this date. If this attitude continues to prevail, eventually, there is no way of getting around it. The "gloom and doom" of this 8th deadly sin or "hasty shopping behavior" will surely come with a painful price to pay, called recession and stock market declines. Thus, with the anticipation of millions of Americans being laid off, the crash of this economy is frightening to say the least. It really shivers me to think about it. The impulsive forethought regarding the vanity of over consumption will possibly crash the fault lines of our income, entitlements and daily living. Therefore, the directional "Crash" of the Titanic-like cruise ship called the USA Economy, in my view from the helm, is magnetically headed for the gigantic and looming iceberg of accumulative debt, and increased cost. That’s why we fought Wall Street to create CalSavers, which will provide millions of Californians with a way to end their working years with dignity.” California currently has nearly two-hundred thousand small businesses that are unable or unwilling to offer their employees a retirement savings program, resulting in four million small business employees working without any workplace retirement. In Los Angeles County, more than 60,000 employers and more than 1.5 million employees are eligible for the retirement savings program. Today’s event is one of five being held statewide this week to launch the CalSavers program; the others being held in San Diego, Fresno, Sacramento, and San Francisco, respectively. Experts agree that the critical mistake many workers, of all ages, make year-after-year lies in assuming Social Security benefits will manage to sustain them in their retirement years. But, with the average Social Security benefit paying less than $17,000 annually, Social Security alone is not enough to retire with dignity. In fact, nearly half of California workers are on a trajectory to retire into economic hardship, defined as below twice the federal poverty rate. And with researchers now estimating that California’s senior population is projected to increase by 64 percent by 2025, that means up to 12 million Californians may be at risk of retiring without the resources to live a dignified retirement. But access to workplace retirement programs makes individuals 15 times more likely to save for retirement, and even modest savings faithfully maintained over a career can make a difference. Analyses have shown a typical 25-year-old California worker who participates in CalSavers could

amass $350,000 by the time they retired at age 65 — two-thirds of which would come from earnings on the original investments made by the saver. CalSavers will put more Californians on the path to greater financial independence in retirement without spending a cent of taxpayer monies. Additionally, there are no costs to employers, who are already registering to participate in the pilot program. “Our 41 employees are like family, which is why we have wanted to provide them with some sort of retirement security program for a long time, but, as a small business, the administrative burden and costs have always been prohibitive for us,” said Lorenzo Harris, President and CEO of Janico Building Services in North Highlands. “CalSavers will allow us to finally give each of our employees the power to take control of their own retirements, while giving us the ability to attract additional employees. We can’t wait to sign up!” Janico Building Services was the first employer in the state to sign up for the CalSavers pilot program. The law establishing CalSavers requires any employer with five or more employees, which does not already offer a workplace retirement savings program, to begin offering a retirement savings program either through the private market or by providing their employees access to CalSavers. Beginning July 1, 2019, employers of all sizes can register for CalSavers at www.CalSavers.com. However, employers can currently register for the pilot program already underway. Employers with 100 or more employees, who do not already offer a retirement plan, will have until June 30, 2020 to register. So I’m not surprised by the governor’s reaction to all this because of his family history. It is in his blood.” This was said in June 2016 and not refuted. Just as Governor Bryant is silent as people are questioning the relationship this week. If Governor Bryant is the nephew of Roy Bryant then it could make people question some of his practices and policies. Just last year when the article was written, many local residents were in an uproar, demanding that the state flag be altered. Mississippi is the only state that still overtly displays the confederate flag on it. In fact, earlier this month it was reported that a new bill is making its way through the Mississippi House of Congress where schools K-12 would be stripped of state accreditation if they effuse to fly the flag.

This law will affect many Blacks and minorities in the area. As reported by the Mississippi Business Journal “Districts, especially those with majority AfricanAmerican student bodies, sometimes object to the flag as racist. One example of a district that

doesn’t display the flag is the city of Jackson, Mississippi’s secondlargest school system.” Many controversial issues have been swirling around Governor Bryant. In 2013, Governor Bryant made some very bothersome statements regarding America’s educational system. Bryant said that much of America’s educational problems started “when mom got into the workplace.” In 2012 he signed a bill into law that practically limited women’s rights to get an abortion. The law required doctors who did abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals, which they couldn’t because the abortion doctors weren’t local doctors. In 2016 Governor Bryant signed House Bill 1523, a religious freedom law that gives businesses the right to discriminate against doing business with/for people who live against their religious beliefs. Guess why this is so crazy, it’s been said Governor Bryant’s son Patrick is gay. If Bryant is the relative of Roy Bryant it seems the family penchant for retaliation against what it deems as wrong, continues. In April of 2016, Bryant declared April “Confederate Heritage Month.” Governor Bryant’s Wikipedia page has been altered at LEAST four times today to include the fact that he is related to Roy and Carolyn Bryant. The revisions have been deleted each time. In light of all of the questions being asked of Governor Bryant right now, I’ll be watching to see if he responds.

In the last decade it has become more common for conversations to be had that raise public awareness on the importance of mental health within society. Various figures in the public’s eye are now having honest conversations about its importance, and as a result its causing a chain reaction in the Black community. Former first lady Michelle Obama said, “Sadly, too often, the stigma around mental health prevents people who need help from seeking it. Whether an illness affects your heart ,your arm or your brain, its still an illness and there shouldn’t be any distinction.” Multifaceted musician, producer, and music Executive, Devin White knows all too well the stigmas that surround such a heavy topic. A long time sufferer of extreme anxiety, Devin has decided to take a stance, and use his music and his voice as both therapy, and a platform to bring awareness to a devastating problem. Born in Virginia Beach, but primarily raised in the Washington D.C. area, Devin White started his early training in theater at the Duke Ellington School of the performing arts, but changed his artistic focus when embarking on his lifelong

dream of being a musician. Musically inclined from a young age, Devin gained inspiration from Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson, but it was through the hustle and spirit of determination that he has been able to rise as an executive in the music industry and ultimately work for the latter. Currently working under the guidance of Janet Jackson’s A&R, Jareiq Kabara, Devin has found himself in extremely high energy environments that require a lot of focus and mental stability. Realizing that he would not be able to thrive with so much mental baggage, Devin has decided to start speaking candidly on the topic of healing. “For most of my life, i’ve gone in and out of feelings of anxiousness. My heart palpitates a mile a minute, I feel like isolating myself and screaming, crying, anything to stop this fear that I can’t describe. Afterward, clergy leaders, caregivers and their care recipients walked up to the Board of Supervisors office and demanded the county create a pathway out of poverty for the county’s IHSS caregivers. Americans warned not eat Romaine Lettuce

Health officials in the U.S. and Canada told people Tuesday to stop eating romaine lettuce because of a new E. coli outbreak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it is working with officials in Canada on the outbreak, which has sickened 32 people in 11 states and 18 people in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The strain identified is different than the one linked to romaine earlier this year but

appears similar to last year’s outbreak linked to leafy greens. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the agency doesn’t have enough information to ask suppliers for a recall, but he suggested that supermarkets and restaurants should withdraw romaine until the source of the contamination can be identified. Trump's Racism By Omission: Rude Theatrics Targeting Black Reporters Overshadows Questions on Voter Suppression By Caleb Gayle April Ryan, White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, and other journalists of color have not been favorites of President Donald Trump. From telling Ryan to set up a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus when she asked if he planned to meet with black members of Congress to calling her a loser, President Trump has displayed his contempt for Ryan. In his post-midterm press conference, Ryan became the target of Trump's ire yet again. But this time what the President did was show more than displeasure with black female reporters - his theatrics overshadowed a key issue that Ryan was trying to address: voter suppression. While his rage, his diminishing of the credibility of these black, award-winning journalists, and his stupidity in calling their questions "racist" minimized what was actually happening: Trump was committing racism by omission. Ryan's question was simple, "Mr. President, what about voter suppression?" She stood up after Trump acknowledged her question but was promptly told "sit down." While pundits opined about Trump's mistreatment of black women journalists, many missed that Trump refused to answer the question about voter suppression, which is poisoning our democracy and disproportionately disenfranchising communities of color. The reality is that suppressing votes has become a hallmark of most of the Republican electoral strategy. Their politicians refuse to engage with communities of color, and instead embark on strategies to diminish our power at the voting booth. We can all see it. But the President uses his bully pulpit to create distractions that

Caleb Gayle shield scrutiny of this undemocratic tactic. Moreover, it allows him to avoid questions about the strategy that he has happily endorsed and enacted with the Republican party. As a reminder, Republicans have not been particularly shy about their voter suppression efforts. For example, Ben Nadler of the Associated Press broke news in October that in Georgia, approximately 53,000 voter registration applications were sitting on hold at the office of Brian Kemp, Georgia's Secretary of State and Republican nominee for governor. Nadler's team at the AP identified that most of these applications were those of black voters. Voter purges are supposed to be used to eliminate people who become ineligible to vote usually because they move or because of a death or incarceration. But in some states like Ohio, voter purges have wrongfully removed people who have not voted in the past few elections. In the runup to the midterms, some 32 counties in Florida violated the law by not providing bilingual ballot assistance.

Republican Sen. Cindy HydeSmith's "joke" about attending "a public hanging" — a method of domestic terrorism that killed hundreds of Black people in Mississippi — resulted in major companies withdrawing their support, except for Major League Baseball (MLB). Hyde-Smith recently received the legal maximum donation of $5,000 from the MLB. A Mississippi midterm election runoff between Hyde-Smith and Democratic opponent Mike Espy, who is African American, is set for Tuesday. On Nov. 11, a video at a campaign rally in Tupelo surfaced, which showed Hyde-Smith expressing admiration for a rancher by saying, "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row." The Office of the Commissioner of MLB made the donation to Hyde-Smith on Nov. 23, according to Judd Legum of Popular Information, who revealed a Federal Election Commission report filed on Nov. 24. Legum's report states the committee was formed "as the sport endured a number of potentially crippling controversies, including the threat of a player's strike and fan anger over the possible contraction of two teams." Meanwhile, on Nov. 21, Charles B. Johnson, the principal owner of the San Francisco Giants, and his wife, Ann, each donated $2,700 to Hyde-Smith's campaign. That donation came after a photo surfaced of Hyde-Smith wearing Confederate garb. In October, Johnson gave $1,000 to the Black Americans for the President's Agenda. It's a Super PAC that has a Black figurehead, yet is funded by a number of

wealthy white conservatives. A racist and misogynistic radio ad created by the PAC in support of Republican Rep. French Hill warned, "Democrats will be lynching Black folk again." More egregiously, states like Kansas use the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck (Crosscheck) to identify duplicative voter registrants across numerous combined voter rolls and subsequently purge those duplicates. Expanded under Kris Kobach - the outgoing Republican Secretary of State and failed gubernatorial candidate Crosscheck, which had an error rate of 99.5 percent, uses a loose name matching that disproportionately targets voters of color for purging. According to a study by the Brennan Center for Justice, "African-American, AsianAmerican, and Latino voters are much more likely than Caucasians to have one of the most common 100 last names in the United States." According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 16.3 percent of Hispanic people and 13 percent of black people have one of the 10 most common surnames, compared to 4.5 percent of white people. An ongoing lawsuit on this is underway and being pursued by Demos. And in states like Alabama, vot-

ers are up against photo ID laws, which disproportionately affect black voters, limited access to offices to issue IDs in black areas, and more. Clarity around where to vote, how to vote, and eligibility to vote become even more significant when these impediments make voting disproportionately harder for black people. According to a study by the Public Religion Research Institute, "black (nine percent) and Hispanic (nine percent) Americans are three times more likely than white Americans (three percent)" to report complications with voting for them or someone in their household because of identification issues. In the same report, "black (15 percent) and Hispanic (14 percent) Americans were roughly three times more likely" to have trouble locating their correct polling place than white Americans (five percent). As president of the United States, Trump had an opportunity to explain his views on voter suppression when Ryan asked her question. Because of his inconsistent application of the truth, one can expect the truth would be stretched or he would offer up unverifiable facts. Instead he exhibited the Trump brand of racism - racism by omission, refusing to acknowledge that voter suppression exists and is spreading across the land in states predominantly controlled by Republicans. Voter suppression is a weighty issue, especially for African Americans, whose ancestors marched, protested and died for the right to vote. Low-income populations "typically have less access to information, resources, institutions, and other factors to prepare for and avoid the health risks of climate change," the report says, leaving them especially vulnerable. Lack of health insurance among the poor will also intensify the risks of illnesses caused by climate change. In urban areas, which produce 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in North America, the poor "live in neighborhoods with the greatest exposure to climate and extreme weather events," the report says. This includes living near pollution sites and in housing developments without sufficient insulation or air conditioning. Additionally, disruptions to infrastructure during natural disasters can have an outsized impact on city residents who rely on public transportation. As average temperatures continue to rise, people who cannot affordably cool their houses will continue to feel financial strains. Disasters and 'green gentrification' Recent storms like Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Harvey, which brought record levels of flooding to coastal areas, also exposed inequities in disaster preparedness as poorer communities struggled to rebuild. "Some property owners can afford to modify their homes to withstand current and projected flooding and erosion impacts," write the report's authors. "Others who cannot afford to do so are becoming financially tied to houses that are at greater risk of annual flood-

ing." Even climate change prevention efforts can reflect existing inequalities, according to the assessment. "Better-resourced communities have created climate offices and programs, while response has lagged in smaller or poorer communities," the report says. Infrastructure improvements to protect against climate change can lead to what the report calls "green gentrification," in which property values rise and low-income residents are pushed out. To combat these inequalities, the report emphasizes the need for government officials to involve residents when developing solutions to climate change. "Decisions about where to prioritize physical protections, install green infrastructure, locate cooling centers, or route public transportation," should be made with low-income communities in mind, according to the report.

Never did he expect his path to include marriage fraud, pleading for the annulment of his marriage, filing for divorce, a child custody battle, or the possibility of the international "legalized" abduction of his only beloved daughter Aaliyah, whom he affectionately calls 'Bee.' Roughly four years ago, Christopher met Ayano Eto in an online chatroom. The two connected right away. She described herself as a Christian woman, attracted to African American men. Though Ayano Eto lived in Japan, halfway around the world, she seemed to be everything in a person that Baylor was longing for. Coming from a family where marriage was a tradition passed down from generation to generation, Christopher decided his future would be with Ayano Eto, and the two made plans for her to join him in the United States. Within 90 days of her arrival, the two were legally married, and Ayano Eto's behavior changed drastically. She became aggressive, abusive, would break into violent outbursts, attack Christopher physically, and would threaten him with knives and blunt objects. Christopher Baylor could not understand the sudden, dramatic shift from the near perfect woman that had once seemed so pleasant or how this marriage had become a nightmare. Fatherhood had been an event he'd anticipated for a good portion of his life. The birth of Aaliyah 'Bee' was monumental for Christopher. He took care of all Ayano Eto's medical needs and expenses, looking forward to doing all he could to ensure their child had the best life possible. And when that meant taking on the added responsibility of becoming the primary caregiver, he happily obliged, handling Bee's day-today care, meals, and the medical needs of their precious child up until the day Ayano Eto took his daughter from him. Christopher Baylor had become a 'left behind parent.' And while society may be jaded

by tales of deadbeat absentees, who evade parental responsibility to avoid fiscally supporting their children, Christopher Baylor's predicament is quite different. What Baylor had not realized was that he had unsuspectingly been lured into a new form of Marriage Fraud for the purpose of U.S. citizenship. Ayano Eto relocated to St. Paul, MN. It was there that she engineered allegations of domestic abuse and criminal battery, against Christopher Baylor. Through court and local law enforcement, she filed a false complaint and a false police report. Ayano Eto had purposely relocated to file in Hennepin County, MN, for the sole purpose of 'forum shopping.' Having no violent history, no prior arrests, and not so much as a parking ticket, Christopher Baylor's life, career, and future were in jeopardy. A New Form of Immigration Marriage Fraud There are cases on record, dating back to 1998, where Americans have been duped into a sham marriage for a minimum of 2 years for the sole purpose of defrauding immigration officials. By posing as 'happily married,' they overcome the USCIS interview for foreign nationals. The time frame can be lengthened if an "anchor baby" is conceived. A new type of Immigration Marriage Fraud is on the rise, known as D2 (for Deception). This newer Green Card scam, commonly used by non-citizens, has become a growing trend in Immigration Fraud. It involves preying on the affections of U.S. residents, scamming these unsuspecting victims, mostly Americans, who are genuinely looking for courtship, love, and lifelong commitment and then, exploiting the Violence Against Women Act [VAWA]. “How does it feel to be a problem?” Over a century ago, African American scholar W. E. B. DuBois asked this question in his classic work on race, The Souls of Black Folk. All people have problems, regardless of wealth or status; it’s part of the human condition. To be a problem is something altogether different. To be a problem is to have your own body, your children, your people viewed as a malignant presence in society. DuBois foresaw that race would be the central issue of the 20th century; he could not have foreseen how deeply entrenched racism would still be in the 21st. How does it feel to be a racial minority in our day and face voter suppression laws designed to keep you away from the polls, or to hear the president declare there are “good people” among white nationalist hate groups? How does it feel to be a problem? The #MeToo movement has drawn much-needed attention to issues of sexual abuse and assault which are experienced by one in every four women and one in six men. Even so, those who courageously come forward with their stories frequently have their pain and moral agency discounted or ignored. How does it feel to hear a senator say, “She doesn’t remember it correctly,” or a congressperson opine, “It happened a long time ago, what does it matter now?” How does it feel to be a problem? There are now more refugees and forcibly displaced persons than at any time in recorded history—68.5 million. Even so, America is closing its doors to refugees. In the last two years the administration has cut the refu-

gee entry goal from 110,000 to a historically low 30,000. How does it feel to go through a two-year vetting process and be promised resettlement in the U.S., only to have your flight canceled and dreams of reunion with your family shattered? How does it feel to be a problem? “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”—words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty that represent America’s highest ideals. Migrants have long come north out of Mexico and Central America to escape poverty and violence in hope of better lives. How does it feel to be an asylumseeker and be turned away in violation of international law, or to be villainized by the president as criminals? How does it feel to be a problem? The crown jewel of the Bill of Rights is the First Amendment, which guarantees the freedom of speech and assembly, the free exercise of religion and freedom of the press. How does it feel to be Muslim when an executive order effectively bans citizens of Muslim majority countries from entering the U.S., to be a journalist who hears the president declare the press to be an enemy of the people, or to be a participant of a peaceful protest and be accused of “mob rule”? How does it feel to be a problem? How did DuBois respond to the question? He wrote, “I answer seldom a word.” What answers do we hear? Alabama NAACP Strongly Condemns Hoover Police Shooting By Erica Wright

Emantic Bradford After the shooting death of 21year-old Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. by a Hoover police officer at the Galleria Mall outside Birmingham on Thanksgiving, the Alabama NAACP has released a statement condemning the act. “Police officers must know the facts involved before pulling their weapons. Police officers must stop being trigger happy when it comes to our children,” said in the statement signed by Benard Simelton, president of the Alabama State Conference NAACP. “Police officers must stop being aggressive with young men of color and stop killing us. Police officers must use human rights tactics to engage who they believe is the perpetrator. A life has been lost because police do not see African Americans as humans.” Over the weekend, Bradford’s family members hired Benjamin Crump to represent them. Crump is a civil rights attorney who represented Trayvon Martin’s family in the 2012 to 2013 George Zimmerman case. Bradford’s family said in a statement, “Our family is completely shocked, heartbroken and devastated at the tragic death of our beloved ‘EJ’. EJ was a devoted son and brother, who dedicated his life to serving his country and always doing the right thing. As we continue to grieve, rest assured, that we are working diligently with our legal team to determine exactly what happened and why this police officer killed our son. We will never forget EJ, and ask for your continued prayers doing this in-

credibly difficult time.” Police initially said they believed Bradford was the shooter in an incident where an 18year-old male was shot twice and a 12-year-old girl was wounded and later transported to Children’s of Alabama. The girl is in stable condition. However, law enforcement said the investigation later revealed Bradford was armed, but likely did not fire the initial shots that wounded the 18-year-old and the 12-year-old, they said. The gunman is still at large. Protestors gathered at the mall on Saturday in remembrance of Bradford. “An innocent man is dead this morning because of implicit bias used against black and brown people . . . police officers must ask questions or at least use alternate forms or tactics to subdue their assailants,” the NAACP said. “A kill shot is not necessary, and in this case, the wrong man was killed. Shooting in a crowd is unlawful and puts many at risk as we have learned an innocent man, a United States Soldier has lost his life to a reckless and uninformed police officer.” The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the incident since it is an officer-involved shooting. The Hoover Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation. The officer who shot Bradford was placed on administrative leave while authorities investigate the shooting. What's more, as of late, because it is worldwide knowledge that African American males are unlikely to receive fair treatment by law enforcement and the U.S. Judicial system, black men are specifically being targeted, as in the case of Mr. Christopher Baylor. Ayano Eto misrepresented herself as a Christian woman attracted to African American men. Now, after having been subjected to racial and religious persecution and threatened with the possibility of losing his beloved child, this father is fighting multiple court battles, including the custody battle for his biracial daughter. How he chose to resolve these matters is evidence of the depth of this father's love for his daughter and also reveals so much about his character. For more than a year, Baylor has been defending himself, simultaneously studying the laws of multiple states, and also, maintaining his career. Through all of this, Christopher Baylor has continued to meet child support payments while unable overcome the challenge of securing parental visitation rights. Yet, he still remains undeterred, fighting multiple legal battles, even though that means having to serve as his own attorney. Having been subjected to all kinds of injustices, such as the violations of his constitutional, civil, parental, and human rights, his greatest fear is that innocent three-year-old Bee, will be abducted out of the country under the Hague Convention. This would terminate all of this father's parental rights and he could lose

This is done under false pretenses, as they have no real intent to remain married. Once they are legally married, they are able to get Green Cards through the use of fraudulent Domestic Abuse claims. This ruse has been commonly used to Fast Track the Immigration process. Some, like Ayano Eto, in desperation, will use criminal coercion, infliction of false imprisonment or provoke violence through reckless intimidation, violent outbursts, and other vindictive acts - this is typical in cases like this.When fraudulent Domestic Abuse claims fail because of unsubstantiated allegations, 'anchor babies' are an alternative resort to circumvent the USCIS Interview Process. When children are involved, this would also circumvent child custody proceedings. The non-citizen spouse can initiate a claim without the U.S. spouse ever being notified of any immigration proceedings held against them. The desire is to obtain a Domestic Abuse Green Card by any means, as this would greatly reduce the chances the non-citizen would incur the 3-year or 10-year entry bar from the United States under the IIRAIRA of 1996. The rates of diagnosed diabetes among African Americans is 12.7% compared to 7.4% of whites. Not only does the African American community face the dilemma of increase diabetes diagnoses, but also face numerous of health care challenges when trying to manage diabetes; such as cost for treatments, medications, limited supplies and access to primary care to maintain a quality of life. Eli Lilly and Company, a global leader in diabetes care, understands these gaps and burdens of costs in the African American community. They understand that there are gaps in health care for communities of color and working to help close it by reducing the cost of insulin and making sure that everyone will have equal access to their medicines. For this reason, Eli Lilly has launched Lilly Diabetes Solution Center and Helpline in the African American community to ensure people receive comprehensive treatment for diabetes. To spread the word on this effort, Lilly will launch this announcement with full page ads in African American newspapers across the country. The Solution Center is a solution-oriented program to provide relief for those who are not insured, underinsured or have high out-of-pocket expenses. It will assist people to gain access to affordable insulin, resources and options. Specifically, the center provides cost savings solutions, free clinic information to receive support and short-term and longterm options for immediate needs. Lilly is dedicated to making sure that no one has to pay full price for insulin. And for those who currently pay high costs of insulin, Lilly is wants to provide lower costs insulin options. "We don't want anyone to have to pay full list price for their insulin, and many people who do will be able to pay significantly less by calling our helpline," said Mike Mason, senior vice president, Connected Care and Insulins. "Our goal is to ensure that people paying high out-of-pocket costs for Lilly insulins are matched with the best solution available to reduce their financial burden and help ensure they receive the treatment they need."
