Stacey Abrams, Democratic candidate for Georgia Governor The State of Georgia’s Democratic Gubernatorial nominee has ended her historic run for governor in a controversial political race that has captured the attention of the country. In a press conference held today at 5 p.m. at her Kirkwood headquarters, Abrams acknowledged GOP candidate and former Secretary of State Brian Kemp will be Georgia’s next governor but failed to concede the race. “I will not concede because the erosion of our democracy is not right,” she stated. Abrams announcement comes days after post-election lawsuits demanding that all votes be counted in the face of voter suppression tactics used by the Secretary of State’s office. Kemp, who was the Republican candidate for governor, failed to step down from the office while running for office, which was a clear conflict of interest.
During the campaign, it was reported Kemp’s office had removed 300,000 registered voters from the rolls in Georgia, 70 percent of which were voters of color. The Georgia legislature’s reinstatement of the exact match rule, which had previously been ruled unconstitutional in a previous lawsuit, resulted in the removal of voters from the rolls for missing a hyphen or leaving out a middle initial. A recent lawsuit found that those reasons could not be used to remove voters from the rolls or to discount provisional or absentee ballots. Kemp declared victory on election night, stepping down from office two days later to begin what he called his transition to the Governorship. Abrams refused to concede insisting all absentee and provisional votes should be counted,
filing several lawsuits. The former Democratic leader of Georgia’s House of Representatives needed an additional 17,000 votes in order to force a run-off with Kemp but decided to end the election in order to work on reforming the voter registration and participation process in Georgia. In her speech, she criticized the voting process and the state of Georgia’s mismanagement of the gubernatorial election, saying she will be filing a major lawsuit against the state of Georgia for the “gross mismanagement of this election and to protect future elections from unconstitutional actions” in the coming days. The voter protection crusader says she will continue fighting for reform as a private citizen announcing the launch of Fair Fight Georgia, an operation that will “pursue accountability in
Georgia’s elections and integrity in the process of maintaining voting rolls.” Georgia’s GOP leadership has been mocking Abrams’ quest for justice. Kemp Spokesman Ryan Mahoney stated, “Radical Stacey Abrams is beyond desperate with her latest publicity stunt. Georgia voters made their decision at the ballot box. It’s time for Stacey Abrams to end her ridiculous temper tantrum and concede.” Paul Bennecke, director of the Republican Governors Association has said Abrams antics “will come back to haunt her if she runs for something again,” and Clay Tippins who ran for the GOP Gubernatorial nomination stated, “To call Abrams’ move childish would be insulting to children.” Kemp thanked Abrams for her “passion, hard work and commitment to public service.”

Thurmond Wins Historic Race for CA Superintendent of Public Instruction PLEDGES TO BE A CHAMPION OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND A SUPERINTENDENT FORALLCALIFORNIASTUDENTS By Sentinel News Service
Tony Thurmond Assemblymember Tony Thurmond is the projected winner of the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction election. More than a week after Election Day, Thurmond has overcome an 86,000 vote deficit on Election Day to win the election. On Saturday, his opponent Marshall Tuck conceded. “I want to thank the voters of California for electing me to serve the 6 million students of California, I intend to be a champion of public schools and a Superintendent for all California students,” said Superintendent-elect Thurmond. “I ran for Superintendent of Public Instruction to deliver to all Californians the promise that public education delivered to me – that all students, no matter their background and no matter their challenges, can succeed with a great public education.” Thurmond was born in Fort Ord, California, and overcame humble beginnings. His mother was an immigrant from Panama who came to San Jose, California to become a teacher. Thurmond’s father was a Vietnam veteran who Tony met when he was almost 40 years old. After Thurmond’s mother died when he was 6 years old, Thurmond moved to Philadelphia with his sibling and was raised by a cousin whom he had never met before. With the help of the public education system and public assistance, Thurmond went on to attend Temple University, where he became student body president. Thurmond has devoted his career to public service, specifically to at-risk young people. As a social worker, Thurmond spent 20 years working directly with families and youth in education, running school-based mental health services and teaching civics, life skills, and career training.
Thurmond later served on his local city council, school board, and was elected to the California State Assembly in 2014. In the State Assembly, Thurmond authored legislation that expanded the free lunch program and moved funding directly from the criminal justice system to school districts. He served as Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education. In his campaign for Superintendent of Public Instruction, Thurmond was supported by Senator Kamala Harris, the California Democratic Party, and California’s teachers. “We talked to voters across the state, and told them what this election means for each of us: It means giving every kid the opportunity to succeed in the 21st century, not just the ones that show the most potential. It means funding our public schools at the levels they deserve, not pouring money into our jails and prisons. It means providing mental health treatment for kids, not arming them with guns. It means supporting our teachers, not demonizing them. It means ensuring every child starts school on the same foot, and providing universal preschool to California’s children. And it means stopping Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos’s antieducation agenda from coming anywhere near California’s public schools.” Thurmond went on to promise, “As Superintendent of Public Instruction, I’ll fight for these values every day. Because these are the values that will create a better life for all through the power of public education in the great state of California.” This article originally appeared in the Los Angeles Sentinel.
COMMENTARY: Public Schools Are More Segregated than They Were 40 Years Ago By Speakin’ Out News
COMMENTARY: Public Schools Are More Segregated than They Were 40 Years Ago...continued must act boldly to save free, highquality public education for all. Some of the very leaders tasked with solving the negative effects from school re-segregation offer shortsighted policies that exacerbate racial and economic divisions. The ripple-effect, consequences of their misguided thinking remains the greatest policy foible of the modern era. Lazy logic behind bad policy feeds a perception that that the achievement gap exists simply, because poor and minority students learn differently than their wealthier, White peers. Rather, it is directly tied to declining enrollment, lower property values, and the dwindling resources available to tackle mounting challenges in the communities that surround underperforming public schools. The greatest irony remains that those promoting harmful education policies use the same language of “giving every child a chance at a high-quality education” to pitch their tax-dollarpoaching and resource-pilfering experiments to desperate parents. Rather than making public education a number one priority, a Hunger-Games-like competition for vouchers and charter schools leaves parents and students fending for themselves. The families that lose the education lottery end up at schools with increased needs and declining resources. In Maryland, our Governor’s BOOST voucher program set aside $5 million dollars of public money to help 2,400 families pay for their child’s education. Yet, 80 percent of the families receiving these grants had children who were already enrolled in private schools. Vouchers, whose American roots can be traced back to some Southern states’ attempts to avoid integration, perpetuate segregated education and are nothing more than a thinly-veiled
attempt to cut off funds to public schools. It gets even worse. Some communities have simply seceded from the larger school district, as we’ve seen in Alabama and Tennessee, to keep from integrating their schools. Since 2000, the U.S. Justice Department has released 250 communities from their desegregation orders and consequently facilitated their financial and administrative secession from their school districts. After all those factors lead to a dip in school performance, students and their communities are stigmatized as “failing.” Schools close. Quality of life drops; economic prospects dwindle; public safety decreases; and the cycle repeats, so that higher needs populations receive even fewer resources. I know. I’ve lived through it. It’s time to back up the big talk of “opportunity for all” with policies that don’t ask parents to compete for a few spots, but instead, make public dollars work for every child. We’ve embraced this mission in my home of Prince George’s County, Maryland where I serve as County Executive. Though we know our best days are to come, we’ve seen incredible progress: increased enrollment; higher graduation rates; an increase in innovative academic programs; and more students receiving college scholarships. The debate over how we improve public education can’t begin with state-funded segregation, which harms communities and students, especially our most vulnerable. Let’s secure our children’s futures and the future of America by making a meaningful investment in quality public schools for all. This article originally appeared in the Speaking Out Weekly News.
rolled in public schools more than doubled, and the percentage of all schools with so-called racial or socioeconomic isolation grew from 9 percent to 16 percent. Research shows that racial and socioeconomic diversity in our classrooms leads to higher than average test scores, greater college enrollment rates, and the narrowing of achievement gaps. These gains don’t just apply to poor and minority children either—every student benefits from learning and engaging with peers from different backgrounds. Despite the evidence, today our public schools are more segregated than they were 40 years ago. As an advocate for children and families, and as a public servant, who has fought for more resources for students, I believe we (continued in next 2 columns)

SACRAMENTO – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and California State PTA remind educators who have closed schools because of dangerous air quality that they can apply for a waiver to ensure they do not lose funding because of a drop in attendance. Torlakson also pledged that these schools will be assisted by administrators from the California Department of Education. State law allows schools to continue to receive state funds from the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) if they have to close because of a natural disaster such as floods, fires, earthquakes or other extraordinary conditions, such as hazardous air quality. "The wildfires burning across California have had a deep impact
on the lives of our families, our friends, our neighbors and our communities. California State PTA supports and appreciates the school districts who have had to make the decision to close schools in order to keep students and school staff safe," said California State PTA President Dianna MacDonald. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Torlakson also encouraged schools facing poor air quality to keep students indoors during recess and meals. Retailers can manipulate consumer regret to beat competitors Offering an everyday low price might not be the best strategy for retailers facing the threat of new competitors in their market
Markdown retailers can survive the entry of an everyday lowprice retailer into a highly competitive market by manipulating price, product availability, and the regret consumers feel when they pay too much or wait till a product is unavailable to buy it, according to a new study. The results explain why markdown pricing remains ubiquitous in spite of the simplicity and marketing and operational advantages of everyday low pricing. Retail pricing comes in two main varieties. In the first, known as markdown pricing, the retailer offers the product at one price early in the season and at a discounted price later. The other option, called everyday low price, is to offer goods at the same price with no or limited markdowns.
THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY SCHOOL DISTRICT CLOSURES
Funding Available For Schools Closed Due To Hazardous Air Quality On November 4, 1952, Dr. Helen Kenyon addressed the Women’s Society of Riverside Church in New York City and opined that, “Eleven o’clock Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. often paraphrased the quote. Today, sadly, our public schools best reflect Dr. Kenyon’s and Dr. King’s sentiment as the most segregated place in America. The rampant re-segregation of American public schools poses a greater threat to the trajectory of America’s progress than terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and Russian meddling in our elections. Sixty-two years after Brown v. Board, the GAO (Government Accountability Office) reported that from the years 2000-2014, both the percentage of K-12 public schools in high-poverty and the percentage of African American and Hispanic students en-

Elodie Adida Goodman Elodie Adida Goodman, an associate professor of operations and supply chain management at the UC Riverside School of Business, and O¨zalp O¨zer, a professor of management science at the University of Texas at Dallas, wondered if retailers can use either of these strategies as a defense against a competitor entering the market. Goodman and O¨zer designed a model that assigned values not only to pricing strategies and retail outcomes, but also to a lessstudied factor: consumer regret. If the consumer buys a product at the original price early in the season they might experience “high price regret” when it goes on sale later. But waiting can lead to “availability regret” if the prod-
uct sells out before it goes on sale. Everyday low-price retailers straddle this dilemma by offering a constant price lower than the markdown retailer’s original price, but higher than its sale price. The modeling showed that by carefully controlling product supply and price, markdown retailers could manipulate both types of consumer regret to drive sales at both the original price and the sale price. Everyday low-price retailers could only manipulate high price regret by controlling their price. But even this didn’t always work because shoppers who bought at the everyday low price retailer could still experience high price regret during seasonal sales at markdown retailers, when prices are lower than at everyday low price retailers. Incumbent everyday low-price retailers failed in competition with markdown retailers entering the market. The results help explain why switching from a markdown pricing mode to everyday low pricing mode can have disastrous results for retailers like JC Penney, whose dismal everyday low price experiment has become a marketing cautionary tale. The results also help explain why markdown pricing dominates the retail environment for some products. “For a retailer facing the risk of competitors entering the market, the markdown pricing mode will be more successful than everyday low price. Existing retailers with a markdown pricing mode will be more likely to survive when competitor enters the market than if they use an everyday low price pricing mode. For a new retailer trying to break into a market employing markdown pricing, everyday low price strategy might be effective,” advised Goodman. The study, “Why Markdown as a Pricing Modality?” appeared in the journal Management Science, was co-authored by Goodman under her maiden name, Adida, and O¨zer.

NAACP Strongly urges Senate Rejection of Farr Nomination Government News
Thomas Farr (Photo: Screen Capture MSNBC)
BALTIMORE — The NAACP strongly condemns Thomas Farr’s nomination and the Senate’s scheduling of his vote. The nation just experienced national elections which are not yet over, and which were tainted by egregious voting rights violations. That Majority Leader McConnell chooses this moment in time to vote on a judicial nominee known as the vote-suppressor-in-chief is not lost on anyone. It is a slap in the face to communities of color everywhere. Thomas Farr poses a serious threat to civil rights, especially since he would preside over a jurisdiction with a large AfricanAmerican population. Even among dangerous Trump nominees, Farr stands out for his de-
cades-long crusade to disenfranchise African Americans. He learned how to intimidate Black voters from segregationist Senator Jesse Helms and helped turn North Carolina into ground zero for voter suppression tactics. His nomination is a travesty. His confirmation would be heresy. We believe the American people want tolerance and unity, rather than hate and divisiveness, and that applies to the federal courts, too. We urge each and every Senator to reject this judicial throwback to white supremacy and segregation. The people of North Carolina and our entire country deserve better than this. ABOUT THE NAACP: Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. Congresswoman Barbara Lee Welcomes Endorsement from Congressman John Lewis Government News Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee welcomed the endorsement from Congressman John Lewis in her race for Democratic Caucus Chair. “Congressman John Lewis is the conscious of the Congress and a living civil rights legend. I am incredibly grateful for his leadership and his endorsement for Chair of the Democratic Caucus,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “Rep. Barbara Lee has been a tireless fighter for justice, civil rights, and equality and an outspoken advocate for the most vulnerable in our society. Across her years of service, Rep. Lee has worked to uplift, not only the Congressional Black Caucus, but
also to bring together members of our party from diverse backgrounds. Now, more than ever, we need effective leaders who can help our caucus find common ground,” said Congressman John Lewis. “There has never been an African American woman in an elected-leadership role in our caucus, even though they have played a foundational role in our party,” Congressman Lewis continued. “It is time to send a powerful message that Black women are not just voters—they are leaders too. I believe Rep. Lee can unify and strengthen our caucus, and I have given her my support in the race for Democratic Caucus Chair.”
Mississippi Senate Race May Be Defining Moment for Black Voters...continued to make history?’” Jackson explained. He says Gillum’s vow to increase the minimum wage and raise taxes to accomplish policy objectives make Florida’s costs for electing its first African American governor too high. “I’d ask a black businessman, ‘Which of your employees are you going to lay off?’ They’d stop and say, ‘I hadn’t thought of it like that.’” Jackson derides African American candidates he claims are fearful of being openly vocal advocates for their own people. “Obama said he was going to be president of all the people. We hear it over and over from black candidates, Gillum included. But if you speak to a Latino candidate, he will tell you exactly what he will do for the Latino community.” Kevin McNeir, editor of the Miami Times during the hanging chad controversy in the BushGore 2010 election and now editor of the Washington Informer, finds some truth in Jackson’s assertions, but takes each candidate on his or her own merits. “I’m an independent. Democrats haven’t done a damn thing for me, including Barack Obama. I’ve been black all my life, so I don’t care about your color. I’m not going to vote for you just because you’re black.” Regardless of African American voters’ views on Trump, McNeir attributes the Democrats’ success in the mid-terms to their expansive field of qualified candidates. “From women, to Muslims, to Native Americans, to transgender, to veterans -- all those numbers went up. The result is the most significant increase in Democratic House members since Watergate. That’s truly noteworthy. Now, Trump can spin it all he wants to.” But McNeir does believe Trump’s influence in Florida was significant because he elevated
DeSantis’s visibility by “giving him a shoulder to lean on, much like with Supreme Court Judge Kavanaugh. “Had Gillum been white, he would have won by 99 percent, he’s that much more qualified than DeSantis. “He was too progressive. And he was going to raise taxes. It was honest for him to say, but you don’t talk about raising taxes with white folk. He should have done what white folks do, lie; raise taxes once he got in.” Tax cuts were also in play in the predominantly Democratic state of Maryland, where Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous, African American and a former NAACP president, was defeated by Republican incumbent Larry Hogan, who won a second term. African American Democrats crossed party lines, not en masse but in significant numbers, in part because they felt Hogan’s tax reduction initiatives had improved their personal finances. Yet, as The Baltimore Sun noted the day after the election, “No coattails: Maryland voters backed Republican Gov. Hogan, but also showed their disdain for Trump.” In exit polling, and across racial lines, voters rejected what they perceived as Trump’s divisiveness, apparently despite whatever personal gain they may have derived from his tax cuts. Charles Taylor described this year’s mid-terms in Mississippi as historic. “In the 2014 mid-terms, for all voters, we had 631,000 voters; in this one, close to 900,000.” Indeed, the Hyde-Smith versus Espy contest may be the defining moment for how black voters view the political landscape in 2020. Echoing Cummings, McNeir said, “The hatred that has been under the radar in America has gotten an invitation from Trump to express yourself.”
Court blocks Trump’s effective ban on green-card holders in the military State/Government News
Mississippi Senate Race May Be Defining Moment for Black Voters By Khalil Abdullah, Ethnic Media Services Editor’s Note: Khalil Abdullah, a veteran reporter with both the general market and the Black press, was former director of the National Association of Black State Legislators. Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s remark to a colleague that “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row” puts the Magnolia State at center stage for black voters in the 2018 mid-term elections. Mississippi had the highest number of lynchings in the United States between 1882 and 1968, according to NAACP records. Hyde-Smith’s explanation that her phrase “was an ‘exaggerated expression of regard’ drew outrage from Dr. Maya R. Cummings, president and CEO of Global Policy Solutions, veteran Capitol Hill staffer and former vice president of research and programs at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. “[It] shows how little regard her forebears had for blacks they murdered and mutilated and how their atrocities are still accepted in her culture,” Cummings said. In the Nov. 6 mid-terms, HydeSmith finished in a dead heat with former Mississippi congressman Mike Espy, an African American who was the Clinton administration Secretary of Agriculture, in a four-way Senate race. The two now will face each other in a runoff special election on Nov. 27. Hyde-Smith was appointed by Mississippi’s governor to fill the remaining two years of the Senate seat when Thad Cochran vacated it due to illness. As a Trump-endorsed candidate, she is in lockstep with the president’s agenda, one Cummings finds polarizing. According to initial Pew Research data, in the 2018 mid-terms, African Americans voted at 90 percent for Democratic candi-
dates; nine percent for Republicans. “African Americans and other people of color were motivated to turn out in record numbers for mid-term elections due to the desire to see Trump’s power curbed,” Cummings observed. “African Americans know exactly what Trump is and what he means for our future. Indeed, he has made no effort to hide his disdain for African Americans and other historically marginalized groups.” Some black analysts argue that a tax-cut-driven bump in personal income should prompt African Americans to vote Republican. But in Mississippi, in precincts where well-to-do and middleclass African Americans reside, Trump’s tax cuts had no measurable impact in the mid-terms, according to Charles Taylor, principal and founder of Peyton Strategies, LLC, based in Jackson, Miss. Though he has provided consulting services for the Espy campaign, he is not a spokesperson. “Precinct 83 is an affluent black precinct in Jackson. Espy got 97.67 percent of the vote,” Taylor said. “In Precinct 84, 95 percent. Precinct 85, predominantly black middle class, 97.2 percent.” Raynard Jackson, a black Republican, is president and CEO of a government affairs and public relations firm in Washington, D.C. who has worked on numerous Republican campaigns, including Ron DeSantis’ gubernatorial campaign in Florida against the Democrat candidate, Andrew Gillum, mayor of Tallahassee. Though not an ardent Trump fan, Jackson criticizes the Democratic party for failing to deliver policies that enable African Americans to reach economic independence. “I carried this message across the state to black communities, ‘how much are you willing to pay (continued in next 2 columns)
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal court issued a ruling on Friday that halts a Trump administration policy that blocked hundreds of lawful permanent residents from serving in the U.S. military. Judge Jon S. Tigar granted a preliminary injunction, holding that the Department of Defense likely violated the federal Administrative Procedure Act after it implemented a policy discriminating against lawful permanent resident enlistees. Tigar’s ruling finds that the Defense Department provided no rational justification for the policy change, stating that it provided no evidence indicating that lawful permanent resident enlistees posed more of a risk than U.S. citizens. “The ruling serves yet another blow to the administration’s antiimmigrant agenda,” said Sameer Ahmed, an attorney with the ACLU Foundation of Southern California. “This decision affirms that there is no justification for discriminating against individuals who want to risk their lives for this country simply because of their immigration status.” The ACLU Foundation of Southern California, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, and the law firm Latham & Watkins LLP filed a class action lawsuit in U.S District Court in San Francisco in June 2018, on behalf of all lawful permanent residents who enlisted in the armed services but have not been permitted even to attend basic training. “We are very pleased with the court’s decision to grant the preliminary injunction,” said Peter Wald, partner with Latham & Watkins. “This ruling represents an important step in assuring that lawful permanent residents who enlist in the U.S. military enjoy the same rights to serve their country as U.S. nationals.” The policy, set forth in an October 2017 memo by the Department of Defense, ended the long-standing practice of treating lawful permanent resident enlistees the same as U.S. citizens, who are permitted to begin serving in the military as soon as they meet ini-
tial entry qualifications. Normally, more extensive background checks are completed after the enlistee ships out to basic training. But the memo says that lawful permanent residents, though permanently residing in the country, must undergo unspecified background investigations before beginning to serve, for however long that takes. The vague memo neither gives adequate justification for the change in policy, nor explains what the investigations entail and how long they will take. In practice, it has amounted to an outright and indeterminate ban of lawful permanent residents, also called green-card holders, from serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The named plaintiffs in the lawsuit, both of whom have lawful permanent resident status in the U.S., are Jiahao Kuang of San Leandro, California and Deron Cooke of Trenton, New Jersey. They were allowed to enlist — Kuang in the Navy and Cooke in the Air Force — last year, but had not been given any indication when or if they would be permitted to serve. Kuang was brought to the U.S. from China when he was 8 years old. He graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA and not only taught himself computer coding, he also founded his high school's first coding club, created educational software programs for his teachers, and helped organize a coding event for all high schools in the Bay Area. Cooke immigrated from Jamaica in 2015 in search of a better life. Inspired by his family's history of public service — his father was a police officer and his uncle a U.S. Air Force pilot — he enlisted and signed a contract to be an auto mechanic. But because of the 2017 policy, their lives were in limbo. The court’s ruling changes that. "When I learned that my enlistment was delayed – even after signing a contract with the Navy – my hopes were dashed," said Kuang. "With this decision, I can now realize my dream and serve my country."
Wells Fargo's Le Nette Rutledge Talks Transferrable Veteran Skills and Why it's Important to 'Show Up' Rutledge, a Senior Learning & Development Consultant at Wells Fargo, talks about her journey transitioning from the U.S. Navy and why it's important to allow your authentic self to show up whether in the military or Corporate America. Business/Financial News
Le Nette is a Learning & Development Sr. Consultant within Talent Development & Organization Effectiveness (TDOE) at Wells Fargo. She facilitates courses and programs providing leadership coaching that reinforces the vision and values of the Company for team members across all levels of the organization. Le Nette's 'why' in life is "…to courageously and compassionately impart excellence in every life, place and situation" presented to her. Le Nette joined Wells Fargo in 2009. Prior to that, she served as a leader of learning teams for Fortune 100/500 companies to include QVC, Inc.; Lowe's Companies, Inc. and Family Dollar Stores, Inc. She retired from the United States Navy after ten (10) years of service. During that time, the fields in which she focused included Leadership Development, Facilitation/Instructional Design, Career Counseling (specifically recruiting) and Anti-submarine Warfare. Le Nette holds a B.A. in political science from Norfolk State University in Norfolk VA and has begun work on a M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. She holds Lean Six-Sigma green belt, Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and various coaching certifications. DI: Tell us a little bit about what it was like transitioning from the military to Corporate America. Overall, it was fair. I had served in the US Navy for close to ten years. Prior to that time, I had held (what I refer to as ) my first 'real' job as a Bank Teller. The thought of re-entering corporate America and now having a son for whom I needed to provide was a bit intimidating. Thankfully I had a really good Transition Assistance Program experience that equipped me with information
and resources to begin seeking employment. I was unemployed for approximately one year before finding continuous employment. DI: Were there any skills you developed while in the military that have been useful in your current role? While my primary area of expertise (rating) in the Navy was not directly applicable to most occupations in the corporate sector, the opportunities to direct teams and hone my leadership skills proved to be a great asset. Additionally, collateral assignments provided exposure to and experience in various HR disciplines. For example, since I was a Naval Instructor I learned about facilitation techniques, principles of instructional design and evaluation program effectiveness. As a result, I was able to easily transition into Learning & Development as a civilian occupation. The time I spent as a Naval Recruiter exposed me to recruiting practices, policies and experiences that were helpful when coordinating/supporting mass recruiting efforts (i.e. job fairs, seasonal hiring, conferences, etc…) in the corporate arena. DI: Were there any ERG's, programs, or even some personal methods used to help with the initial transition of getting acclimated to a new workplace? Great question! This is where for me there was a most noticeable void. Prior to Wells Fargo, employers with whom I worked offered nothing to assist Veterans with the initial transition. If I found an external resource that could help in my transition, my employers were typically sup(continued on page 6)
CDFW Shuts Down Black-Market Marijuana Grow in Trinity County Business/Consumer News On Nov. 6, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) served a search warrant on a black-market marijuana cultivation operation at the 1700 block of Hidden Valley road in Trinity County. The property contained an unpermitted water diversion, water pollution violations, over 900 unprocessed growing marijuana plants and 5,069 pounds of untested black-market marijuana bud. During routine flights over Trinity County, CDFW observed more than 600 marijuana plants and numerous large water tanks with a large black irrigation hose leading into dense vegetation along a creek. CDFW verified that the grow was unlicensed by the state and unpermitted by the county. A record check on the property showed no CDFW Lake or Streambed Alteration Agreement (LSAA) had been filed, no state license to grow marijuana and no attempt to legitimize the operation in the county. CDFW's Watershed Enforcement Team (WET), which includes a combination of law enforcement officers and scientific staff, inspected the property and detained 32 suspects. Some of the suspects were armed and wearing bullet proof vests. Two suspects had a fake police officer badge. Eleven were booked into Trinity County jail on multiple felony charges related to environmental crimes. The others were released. Eleven Fish and Game Code violations were documented includ-
ing a substantial water diversion from a tributary to the South Fork Trinity River, which provides critical breeding and juvenile rearing habitats for steelhead trout, Chinook salmon, and several species of aquatic amphibians, including the Foothill yellow-legged frog, a candidate for state threatened species status. The water diversion consisted of a large hose that was actively funneling water to multiple water storage tanks. Unpermitted water diversions like this are capable of dewatering streams during the summer months, which can reduce or eliminate the reproductive success of the aquatic species that rely on these habitats. "Black-market grows prevent legitimized cultivators from thriving, harm California's sensitive natural resources with diverted waterways and illegal pesticides and put untested cannabis products on the black-market," said David Bess, Deputy Director and Chief of the CDFW Law Enforcement Division. "We support the legal cannabis market where cultivators obtain permits, take action to prevent environmental impacts and comply with applicable state and local laws." CDFW collaborated with the Trinity County Sheriff's Office, the Trinity County Environmental Health Department and the US Forest Service on the mission. CDFW would like to remind the public to report environment crimes such as water pollution, water divisions and poaching to the 24/7 CalTIP hotline at (888) 334-2258.

3 Reasons To Avoid – Or Delay – Knee-Replacement Surgery Health/Fitness News
Hitting your 50s or 60s can bring several life changes, and increasingly those include artificial joints. For much of the aging U.S. population, knees in particular are wearing out. More than 600,000 knee replacements are performed annually in the U.S., according to The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. That number is expected to swell to 3 million by the year 2030, the publication’s study reported, partly because people are working longer and obesity is on the rise. But while knee replacements are becoming a popular elective surgery, some studies estimate 20 percent or more of recipients aren’t pleased with the result. Medical experts question whether replacement surgery is being done too soon – or whether some people need a new knee at all. “Surgery should only be done as a last resort,” says Dr. Victor Romano (www.romanomd.com), an orthopedist and author of Finding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery. “A knee replacement can be life-changing, but they can also be painful, wear down prematurely and become infected. “If you have debilitating pain and difficulty walking because of degenerative arthritis, surgery may be your best option no matter your age. Otherwise, there are sound reasons to avoid a knee replacement, or at least to postpone it until a more appropriate time.” Romano says there are three main reasons to avoid or put off knee replacement surgery: Plastic debris. A total knee replacement consists of metal moving on plastic. The plastic wears down over time, and that can be a pain – physically and financially – to patients who may have to get the prosthesis replaced once, twice or more. “The plastic debris accumulates in the knee joint,” Romano says. “The more active you are, the heavier you are, the more debris. The white cells, which attack foreign invaders,
start attacking the surrounding bone. When it’s time to replace the plastic joint, we also have to replace the bone – and that’s a significant and unpleasant surgery.” A prosthesis doesn’t last 30 years. This is a key reason why Romano thinks younger replacement candidates should wait as long as possible. “A total joint replacement in a 70-year-old patient will typically last 15 years,” Romano says. “With the average life expectancy being 85, chances are this would be the only knee replacement that patient would need. But for a 40-year-old who’s more active, it may only last 10 years. And remember, recovery is challenging. So it’s better to wait for technology to catch up. As it does, the better the knee replacements will be.” Other remedies may work. Many people experiencing chronic knee pain are overweight or obese. “A healthy diet and exercise program can bring the weight down and take pressure off the knees,” Romano says. “Also, a hinged knee brace, supplements that aid in repairing worn cartilage, and injections such as cortisone or hyaluronic acid could reduce pain and restore quality of life.” “There are ways to at least buy time,” Romano says. “And there are patients who were told they needed a knee replacement, but with conservative therapy options, happily discovered otherwise and returned to their favorite activities without pain.” About Dr. Victor Romano Dr. Victor Romano (www.romanomd.com) is an orthopedic surgeon in Oak Park, Ill., and the author of Finding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery. He is board-certified in orthopedics and sports medicine with over 25 years of experience in the field. He graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and completed medical school at the University of Loyola-Chicago.
Drowsy After Another Restless Night? Try These 5 Tips For A Good Night’s Sleep Health/Fitness News
Millions of Americans toss and turn much of the night, unable to fall asleep – or to stay asleep once they finally do drift off. Maybe it’s worry about bills. Maybe it’s relationship problems. It might even be a sleep disorder keeping them awake when they should be snoozing soundly. Whatever the reason, more than one-third of American adults don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Without proper sleep, you could be drowsy at work the next day, unable to properly perform your job and irritable with everyone around you.
And that’s not all. “Lack of sleep can leave you fatigued and with a weakened immune system, which could make you more susceptible to infections,” says Dr. Shab Krish, author of Restore Your Rest: Solutions for TMJ and Sleep Disorders (www.krish.com). “Lack of sleep can also decrease your mental acuity, disrupt natural hormone levels, and lead to a variety of other significant health problems.” Krish, who is also director of TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of North Texas, offers a few suggestions for those who find them(continued in next 2 columns)
Drowsy After Another Restless Night? Try These 5 Tips For A Good Night’s Sleep...continued selves still grumpy and exhausted when morning arrives: Set your clock to remind you bedtime is approaching. You probably already set your clock so that you wake up when you need to in the morning. But Krish suggests you also set an alarm for 30 minutes before bedtime. “That will be a reminder that you need to shut off your electronic devices and start to unwind,” she says. Krish says you should strive to go to bed at the same time every night. Set the mood. Krish says your bedroom should be an oasis. She recommends having dark shades covering all windows and eliminating any noise. Set the temperature between 68 degrees and 72 degrees. Follow rituals. Establish nightly bedtime rituals, such as taking a warm bath, listening to relaxing music, or reading. “Getting into a nightly routine will tell your brain that it’s time to start relaxing and preparing for sleep,” Krish says. Use your bed only as a bed. People lead busy, stress-filled lives, and sometimes they take their work to bed right along with them, determined to answer one last email or finish that report before they turn out the light. Bad idea, Krish says. “Doing work or other stressful activities while in bed can make it difficult for your brain to relax when it’s time to sleep,” she says. “Go into a dif-
ferent room to finish that work. That way when your body hits the mattress, your brain knows it can start to relax.” Rule out a sleep disorder. Experiencing trouble falling asleep, waking up regularly during the night, and snoring are a few of the indications that you might have a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea, Krish says. “When you wake up in the morning you should feel refreshed,” she says. “If you don’t, that might be an indicator of a more serious problem and you should consider talking to a medical professional.” Finally, Krish says exercise also can help. “Regular exercise is not only good for your body and overall health, it’s also good for your sleep,” she says. “A solid 30 minutes of daily exercise can make a huge difference in your quality of sleep.” About Dr. Shab Krish Dr. Shab Krish, author of Restore Your Rest: Solutions for TMJ and Sleep Disorders, is director of TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of North Texas (www.krish.com). She has board certifications with the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine. She is also a double specialist in both periodontics and endodontics.
Michelle Obama had miscarriage, used IVF to conceive girls By Defender News Service
The Obama Family Michelle Obama says she felt alone after a miscarriage 20 years ago and she and Barack Obama underwent fertility treatments to conceive their two daughters, according to her new memoir. In some of her most extensive public comments on her White House years, the former first lady also lets her fury fly over President Donald Trump’s “bigotry and xenophobia” — dangerous, deliberate rhetoric, she wrote, that risked her family’s safety. “For this,” she writes, “I’d never forgive him.” But it’s her deeply personal account of her marriage to the future president that shed new light on the Ivy League-educated couple’s early struggle with issues of family, ambition and public life. “We were trying to get pregnant and it wasn’t going well,” Mrs. Obama, 54, writes in “Becoming.” “We had one pregnancy test come back positive, which caused us both to forget every worry and swoon with joy, but a couple of weeks later I had a miscarriage, which left me physically uncomfortable and cratered any optimism we felt.” The Obamas opted for IVF, one form of assisted reproduction that typically involves removing eggs from a woman, fertilizing them with sperm in a lab, and implanting the resulting embryo. It costs thousands of dollars for every “cycle,” and many couples require more than one attempt. Mrs. Obama writes of being alone to administer herself shots to help hasten the process. Her “sweet, attentive husband” was at the state legislature, “leaving me largely on my own to manipulate my reproductive system into peak efficiency,” she said. “Becoming” was one of the most anticipated political books in memory, ranking at the top of Amazon’s best-sellers before its release. That’s often the case with the memoirs of former first ladies, including Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. But Mrs. Obama defied her exalted status in the annals of history by cultivating an image of a modern woman with whom many Americans would like to sip wine and chat. But until now, she’s not extensively shared so many details.
Some family struggles, such as losing a baby, are known by millions of women. “I felt like I failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were because we don’t talk about them,” the former first lady said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” ”We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken.” Mrs. Obama, said they underwent fertilization treatments to conceive daughters Sasha and Malia, now 17 and 20. She also writes about falling in love. The Obamas met at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin LLP, and Michelle was skeptical at first. But she was then impressed by his “rich, even sexy baritone” and by his “strange, stirring combination” of serenity and power. Their first kiss set off a “toppling blast of lust, gratitude, fulfillment, wonder,” she wrote. Confronting racism in public life — being the first Black first lady, wife of the nation’s first Black president — has been a bracing experience, in Mrs. Obama’s telling. She agonized over what she feared was a cartoonish, racist image. She remembered being labeled “angry” and, by the Fox network, “Obama’s Baby Mama.” In the White House, she knew she would be labeled “other” and would have to earn the aura of “grace” given freely to her white predecessors. She found confidence in repeating to herself a favorite chant: “Am I good enough? Yes I am.” In the memoir, Mrs. Obama lets loose a blast of anger at Trump. She writes that Trump’s questioning of whether her husband was an American citizen was “crazy and mean-spirited” — and “dangerous.” Trump suggested Obama was not born in the U.S. but on foreign soil — his father was Kenyan. The former president was born in Hawaii. “What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls?” she writes in the memoir. “Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this, I’d never forgive him.” This article originally appeared in the Defender News Network.
HEALTH MATTERS: Bone Davis brings global awareness to sickle cell disease By Marie Y. Lemelle
Musician Bone Davis Since the age of 8, Bone Davis has spent his entire life as a musical performer. “I learned to play the bass, keyboards and drums,” he said. He made a name for himself as a keyboardist, playing rhythm and blues and jazz with a diverse group of music legends including B.B. King, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Con Funk Shun, Nancy Wilson, the Blasters, Poison, Wild Cherry and the Wu-Tang Clan, to name a few. A native of Texas, Davis has an interesting family history full of heroes and legendary musicians. His late father, George Bolin, was a member of the original Tuskegee Airmen. Davis also grew up with a family that was involved in the Motown sound. “My cousin Robert White was the guitarist for the Funk Brothers, who were the session musicians for most of the Motown recordings,” Davis said. “My favorite genres of music are R&B, jazz, hip hop and blues.” Throughout his life, however, Davis has suffered from horrendous pain. “For as long as I can remember, pain was part of my life,” he said. “The pain was from sickle cell disease and anemia.” Both of Davis’ parents had the trait. Davis was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia at birth. “It runs in my family, including my grandson and other relatives [they] are affected by sickle cell,” he said. WebMD explains that with sickle cell disease, red blood cells don’t have their normal shape. Instead of a round shape, the cells are shaped like the letter C, a crescent or a sickle. They can’t carry oxygen to the body as well as they should. Too little oxygen can lead to symptoms like pain, shortness of breath, tiredness and infections. Symptoms and signs can include abdominal swelling, fever, pale skin or nail beds, swelling in the feet and hands, and yellow tint to the skin and whites of the eyes. Sickle cell disease can affect many different parts of the body including the spleen, lungs and brain. Davis teamed up with Educational Awareness through Entertainment Association to heighten awareness of sickle cell anemia. “I realized that my voice needed to be heard, especially because my peers in the entertainment industry are dying from it, like Rapper Prodigy, just last year,” Davis said. “Sickle cell anemia has always been promoted as a minority disease. It’s not. The public needs to know symptoms and al-
ternative pain management methods.” Sickle cell disease affects approximately 100,000 Americans. While the majority of the population who have it are African Americans, it is common among people from Africa, Asia, Europe, India, the Caribbean, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. “Sickle cell disease can cause anemia, which means that you don’t have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to your body,” Davis said. “I realized that most people don’t understand how sickle cell affects your body because you can’t see it.” About one in 13 African-American babies is born with the sickle cell trait. About one in every 365 black children is born with sickle cell disease. Source: Gregory Goodman Sickle cell disease is common among people from Africa, India, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The high prevalence of the defective gene in these regions may be due to the fact that carriers of a mutation in the beta-subunit of haemoglobin are more resistant to malaria. Pain episodes or crisis can occur without warning when sickle cell blocks blood flow and decreases oxygen delivery. “The pain is sharp, intense, stabbing or throbbing,” Davis said. When abnormally shaped sickle cells are stuck in arteries that feed the brain, they can block blood flow and cause a stroke. A crisis can result due to illness, temperature changes, stress, dehydration and high altitudes. Quite often, a person does not know what causes the crisis. Research studies found that the only way to cure sickle cell disease is with a stem cell or bone marrow transplant. This procedure is most often done in children under 16 who have had sickle cell complications like pain and strokes. Stem cell transplants aren’t done as often in adults because the risks increase as a person gets older. Pain can strike almost anywhere in the body and in more than one spot at a time. The pain often occurs in the lower back, legs, arms, abdomen and chest. Sickle cell disease can injure blood vessels in the eye. Kidneys are sensitive to the effects of red blood cell sickling and there are a number of ways in which the liver may be injured in sickle cell disease. People with sickle cell disease may also have trouble coping with pain and fatigue, as well as with frequent medical visits and (continued on page 6)

Walmart Withdraws Support of Mississippi Senator After 'Public Hanging' Comment Companies are distancing themselves from Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. By Frank Kineavy
Republican Sen. Cindy HydeSmith is facing backlash as she heads into a midterm election runoff slated for Nov. 27 against Democratic opponent Mike Espy, who is African American. HydeSmith "joking" about attending "a public hanging" — a method of domestic terrorism that killed hundreds of Black people in Mississippi — has resulted in major companies withdrawing their support. Walmart, the nation's largest retail chain, (a DiversityInc Noteworthy company), has asked for its money back, a $2,000 contribution made to Hyde-Smith earlier in the campaign. "Will and Grace" actress Debra Messing confronted the company in a tweet. Walmart replied to Messing on Tuesday: Walmart @Walmart Replying to @DebraMessing @slpng_giants Hi Debra. Completely understand your concern. Sen. HydeSmith’s recent comments clearly do not reflect the values of our company and associates. As a result, we are withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations. 5,497 6:15 AM - Nov 20, 2018 2,045 people are talking about this According to CBS News, "A Walmart spokeswoman clarified that the company's PAC made a $2,000 donation on Nov. 8, two days after the general election and
several days before the video of Hyde-Smith's comments first surfaced." Walmart is the third company in the past two days that has asked for a refund of their campaign contributions. On Monday, Union Pacific, a railroad giant, and Boston Scientific, a medical device manufacturer, both paved the way in withdrawing their support of Hyde-Smith. The controversial comment by Hyde-Smith occurred on Nov. 2, while attending a campaign event in Tupelo, after Colin Hutchinson, a local cattle rancher praised her, said that if he "invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row." Hyde-Smith said the comment was not a racial connotation, but an attempt at humor. Unfortunately, for Hyde-Smith, nobody is laughing. She has been further criticized because she has not apologized for the comment. Democratic Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California have stepped up to back Espy. "People know there's a runoff. They know we're competitive; they know that we can win — and now, there's a passion," Espy said in an interview. "It started on the night of the election, but it got more intense as people learned what she said." Current predictions in the Mississippi Senate election, as of Tuesday, show Hyde-Smith still holding a sizable lead. Reader Question: Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith hasn't apologized for her comment. Can she still effectively represent those in the state offended by her comment?
Wells Fargo's Le Nette Rutledge Talks Transferrable Veteran Skills and Why it's Important to 'Show Up'...continued from page 3 portive. But again, they offered/ developed nothing. It would not be until several years later when joining Wells Fargo that I would (for the first time since I exited the military in 1998) have an employer who offered internal resources/ programs to assist members of the military community within the organization. DI: Also, did you always have an idea of what career or industry you wanted to pursue post-military life? This question makes me smile. Actually, I credit the Navy with helping me realize that creating consistent and compelling learning experiences was my sweet spot; the point at which what I can do, what others need me to do and what I love to do converge. Since exiting the military, no matter the position or employer, some component of Learning & Development has been a critical component of my job responsibilities. So, a huge 'shout out' and "thank you" to the Navy for helping me discover my passion. DI: Lastly, there are stereotypes that women can't handle the mental strain of combat or aren't strong enough. In what ways have you personally opposed these gender stereotypes in the military and continue to do so in your new role? People will think what they think until they are willing to be open to new and different perspectives. For me, it's not so much about challenging stereotypes but rather ushering in a paradigm
shift. Reality is, yes. For some women the mental strain of being in combat is more than they can bear. AND, the same is true for some men. Whether I failed or succeeded at points in my military career, it wasn't because I am a woman. It was because I am human and imperfect. This is not to say that others have not had experiences tied to gender stereotypes. It is to say that adversity due to gender was not my reality. That being said, it is no secret that (generally) women disproportionately face certain dynamics in corporate settings than our male counterparts do (e.g., glass ceiling, equal pay, etc…). How do I usher in a paradigm shift/challenge stereotypes? I simply show up. As my best, authentic, unrelenting self – I show up. I do my best. I challenge the status quo if there is viable challenge to be made. And, I focus on helping others realize and walk their full potential. I'm a woman. When people see me, they know that. So, just in my showing up in this authentic yet results-oriented way, I offer the opportunity for others to reconsider gender stereotypes and shift their paradigm. As my mom would say at times, "Sometimes you have to show 'em rather than tell 'em." I heard one Wells Fargo leader share this, "The military is a microcosm of society." This is so true. The same stereotypes that abound in society exist in the military…because those who serve in the military bring with them the life experiences, assumptions and beliefs of the societies of which they were previously a part.
CIA concludes Saudi crown prince ordered journalist Jamal Khashoggi's assassination Chicago Tribune Shane Harris, Greg Miller, Josh Dawsey First published: The Washington Post
The CIA has concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last month, contradicting the Saudi government's claims that he was not involved in the killing, according to people familiar with the matter. The CIA's assessment, in which officials have said they have high confidence, is the most definitive to date linking Mohammed to the operation and complicates the Trump administration's efforts to preserve its relationship with a close ally. A team of 15 Saudi agents flew to Istanbul on government aircraft in October and killed Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate, where he had come to pick up documents that he needed for his planned marriage to a Turkish woman. In reaching its conclusions, the CIA examined multiple sources of intelligence, including a phone call that the prince's brother Khalid bin Salman, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, had with Khashoggi, according to the people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the intelligence. Khalid told Khashoggi, a contributing columnist to The Washington Post, that he should go to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to retrieve the documents and gave him assurances that it would be safe to do so. Fatimah Baeshen, a spokeswoman for the Saudi embassy in Washington, D.C., said the ambassador and Khashoggi never discussed "anything related to going to Turkey." She added that the claims in the CIA's "purported assessment are false. We have and continue to hear various theories without seeing the primary basis for these speculations." The CIA's conclusion about Mohammed's role was also based on the agency's assessment of the prince as the country's de facto ruler who oversees even minor affairs in the kingdom. "The accepted position is that there is no way this happened without him being aware or involved," said a U.S. official familiar with the CIA's conclusions. The CIA sees Mohammed as a "good technocrat," the U.S. official said, but volatile and arrogant, someone who "goes from zero to 60, doesn't seem to understand that there are some things you can't do." CIA analysts believe he has a firm grip on power and is not in danger of losing his status as heir to the throne despite the Khashoggi scandal. "The general agreement is that he is likely to survive," the official said, adding that Mohammed's role as the future Saudi king is "taken for granted."
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, attends the second day of an investment conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Oct. 24, 2018. (Amr Nabil/AP) A spokesperson for the CIA declined to comment. Over the past several weeks, the Saudis have offered multiple, contradictory explanations for what happened at the consulate. This week, the Saudi public prosecutor blamed the operation on a rogue band of operatives who were sent to Istanbul to return Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia, in an operation that veered off course when the journalist "was forcibly restrained and injected with a large amount of a drug resulting in an overdose that led to his death," according to a report by the prosecutor. The prosecutor announced charges against 11 alleged participants and said he would seek the death penalty against five of them. The assassination of Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Mohammed's policies, has sparked a foreign policy crisis for the White House and raised questions about the administration's reliance on Saudi Arabia as a key ally in the Middle East and bulwark against Iran. President Donald Trump has resisted pinning the blame for the killing on Mohammed, who enjoys a close relationship with Jared Kushner, the president's son-inlaw and senior adviser. Privately, aides said, Trump has been shown evidence of the prince's involvement but remains skeptical that Mohammed ordered the killing. The president has also asked CIA and State Department officials where Khashoggi's body is and has grown frustrated that they have not been able to provide an answer. The CIA does not know the location of Khashoggi's remains, according to the people familiar with the agency's assessment. Among the intelligence assembled by the CIA is an audio recording from a listening device that the Turks placed inside the Saudi consulate, according to the people familiar with the matter. The Turks gave the CIA a copy of that audio, and the agency's director, Gina Haspel, has listened to it. The audio shows that Khashoggi was killed within mo-
ments of entering the consulate, according to officials in multiple countries who have listened to it or been briefed on its contents. Khashoggi died in the office of the Saudi consul general, who can be heard expressing his displeasure that Khashoggi's body now needed to be disposed of and the facility cleaned of any evidence, according to people familiar with the audio recording. The CIA also examined a call placed from inside the consulate after the killing by an alleged member of the Saudi hit team, Maher Mutreb, a security official who has often been seen at the crown prince's side and who was photographed entering and leaving the consulate on the day of the killing. Mutreb called Saud al-Qahtani, then one of the top aides to Mohammed, and informed him that the operation had been completed, according to people familiar with the call. This week, the Treasury Department sanctioned 17 individuals it said were involved in Khashoggi's death, including Qahtani, Mutreb and the Saudi consul general in Turkey, Mohammad al-Otaibi. The CIA's assessment of Mohammed's role in the assassination also tracks with information developed by foreign governments, according to officials in several European capitals who have concluded that the operation was too brazen to have taken place without Mohammed's direction. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoganhas said his government has shared the audio with Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. In addition to calls and audio recordings, CIA analysts also linked some members of the Saudi hit team directly to Mohammed himself. Some of the 15 members have served on his security team and traveled in the United States during visits by senior Saudi officials, including the crown prince, according to passport records reviewed by The Washington Post. The U.S. had also obtained intelligence before Khashoggi's death that indicated he might be
in danger. But it wasn't until after he disappeared, on Oct. 2, that U.S. intelligence agencies began searching archives of intercepted communications and discovered material indicating that the Saudi royal family had been seeking to lure Khashoggi back to Riyadh. Two U.S. officials said there has been no indication that officials were aware of this intelligence in advance of Khashoggi's disappearance or had missed any chance to warn him. Khashoggi "was not a person of interest," before his disappearance, and the fact that he was residing in Virginia meant that he was regarded as a U.S. person and therefore shielded from U.S. intelligence gathering, one of the officials said. Trump has told senior White House officials that he wants Mohammed to remain in power because Saudi Arabia helps to check Iran, which the administration considers its top security challenge in the Middle East. He has said that he does not want the controversy over Khashoggi's death to impede oil production by the kingdom. One lingering question is why Mohammed decided to kill Khashoggi, who was not agitating for the crown prince's removal. A theory the CIA has developed is that Mohammed believed Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist who was too sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood, according to people familiar with the assessment. Days after Khashoggi disappeared, Mohammed relayed that view in a phone call with Kushner and John Bolton, the national security adviser, who has long opposed the Brotherhood and seen it as a regional security threat. Mohammed's private condemnation of the slain journalist stood in contracts to his government's public comments, which mourned Khashoggi's killing as a "terrible mistake" and a "tragedy." U.S. officials are unclear on when or whether the Saudi government will follow through with its threatened executions of the individuals blamed for Khashoggi's killing. "It could happen overnight or take 20 years," the U.S. official said, adding that the treatment of subordinates could erode Mohammed's standing going forward. In killing those who followed his orders, "it's hard to get the next set [of subordinates] to help," the official said. The Washington Post's John Hudson and Missy Ryan in Washington, Souad Mekhennet in Frankfurt and Loveday Morris and Kareem Fahim in Istanbul contributed to this report. California’s Legislators Lack Private Sector Experience State/Government News Back in the days of adding machines and manual ledgers, final election results in California were usually done by midnight on election day. Sometimes there would be a few precincts counting ballots into the wee hours of the morning, and you wouldn’t know a result till the next day. Fast forward to 2018, and the age of global interconnectedness, with instantaneous algorithmic management of everything from power grids to Facebook feeds, yet here in California the complete results of the 2018 midterms won’t be available until December 7th. Go figure. While California’s ability to count ballots runs contrary to the otherwise dazzling march of progress, by now we have enough information to offer a pretty good look at California’s state legislature for 2019-20. The Democratic supermajority has been reestablished. With 28 confirmed seats in the Senate, and 56 in the Assembly, the Democrats hold 70 percent of the seats in
How Many State Legislators Have Private Sector Experience?
When one considers the professional background of California’s politicians, a clear pattern emerges. And while compiling this data requires some degree of subjective interpretation, no reasonable interpretation would fail to reveal dramatic differences in experience between Democrats and Republicans.
Three election cycles ago, a California Policy Center analysis compared the biographies of California’s state legislators, asking how Republicans and Democrats differ in terms of what they did before they became politicians. To repeat this exercise, 2018 election results were obtained from the California Secretary of States “District Races” page for the Senate and the Assembly. For incumbents who were reelected, biographies were obtained from the Senate and Assembly websites. For newcomers, a trip to Wikipedia, Ballotpedia, or their campaign websites was sufficient.
California State Legislature, 2019-2020 Membership Business vs. Government Background As seen on the above table, in California’s 2019-20 state senate, 79 percent of the Democrats have no private sector experience. On the other hand, 58 percent of the Republicans had no public sector experience prior to running for elected office, although most of them ran for local offices prior to running for state senate. The same story applies with California’s state assembly, where 73 percent of the Democrats have no private sector experience, and 55% of the Republicans have at
both houses. Even if Republicans achieved the unlikely capture of all four Assembly seats that remain too close to call, nothing would change. Overall, so far there are 84 Democratic legislators, and only 32 Republicans.
least some private sector experience. Before continuing, it’s interesting from this perspective to compare this 2019-20 state legislature to the 2013-2014 state legislature. Back then the proportions were generally the same, but there were almost no Democrats – only five in both houses – compared to 14 of them today. Conversely, back in 2013 there were 25 Republicans who had an exclusively business background prior to holding elected office, compared to only 15 today. Over the same period, the number of Republicans with only public sector experience prior to holding office has more than doubled, from four back in 2013 to 11 today. Overall there are now even fewer Republicans – down from a paltry 36/ 120 six years ago to a vanishing 32/120 today. California State Legislature, 2013-2014 Membership (continued on page 8)

FILM REVIEW: Amazing Grace
“I Tell You… If You Ain’t Got Your War Clothes On...! By: Lou Yeboah
By Dwight Brown NNPA News Wire Film Critic
Lou Yeboah
In Amazing Grace, Aretha is a conduit who channels a spirit from above into the hearts of those who listen. With the premiere and distribution of this film, she can do that for eternity. Back in the day, if you couldn’t get to church on Sunday to hear the pastor’s sermon, you’d put on Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace album, the best-selling gospel record of all time, and she would give you your spiritual fix. After a long delay, and its share of controversy, this uplifting documentary that preserved her live recording of that album is finding distribution. It’s as if Franklin is sending a message to us from the great beyond. Thank heaven. With the best of intentions, director Sydney Pollack and his crew filmed the Queen of Soul as she performed over two days, January 2nd and 3rd, at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles in 1972. The smooth transition from her live recording to the now historic double album culminated with a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance. The making of the documentary traveled a much rougher road. Apparently, Pollack and his crew had problems syncing the sound. It was a challenge that didn’t get resolved until producer Alan Elliot bought the rights from Pollack in 2007. Elliott then had two problems to solve. 1.) Fix the technical hitches and make a cohesive documentary. 2.) Overcome Franklin’s resistance; she successfully sued to stop the distribution of the film in 2011 and 2015. After she passed away, her estate gave permission for the film to be released, and it premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival in New York on Monday November 12, 2018. So, was it worth the wait? The master of ceremonies at the
recording session is the legendary Reverend James Cleveland, whose rich baritone is somewhere between the soulful tones of Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass. Cleveland introduces the lady of soul with such reverence that you’d think a queen was walking into his church. And she is. Says the reverend with great pride: “She can sing anything. ‘Three Blind Mice.’ Anything.” Behind his pulpit is The Southern California Community Choir, directed by Alexander Hamilton. The singers have more enthusiasm than fans at a Beyoncé concert. On the side of the pulpit, Franklin’s band warms up: Guitar: Cornell Dupree. Organ: Kenny Luper. Percussion: Pancho Morales. Drums: Bernard Purdie Bass: Chuck Rainey. The audience is a mix of parishioners, music fans and some well-known guests: Clara Ward, Aretha’s father Reverend C.L. Franklin, along with Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones. Franklin floats into the room with an aura befitting Cleopatra. At the piano or standing in front of a mic on the podium, she launches into classic and contemporary gospel songs that show her versatility and musicianship. Her voice is at the peak of its powers. Clear. Piercing. Emotional. Divine. She settles into a modern gospel song written and formerly sung by Marvin Gaye “Wholy Holy.” Then “How I Got Over” rocks the church to its core. The gospel standard “Precious Memories” is so solemn it could bring tears to anyone’s eyes. Playfully she blends the Carol
(Photos courtesy of Al’s Records and Tapes) King song “You’ve Got A Friend” with the very traditional “Precious Lord (Take My Hand),” displaying an equal feel for pop and gospel stylings. Easily the most dramatic performance from the two days of singing has got be her intense rendition of “Mary Don’t You Weep.” It’s a classic spiritual that dates back to the Civil War when it was sung by slaves as a coded message that said that times will get better, oppressors will get their due, persevere and resist. In lyrics that the overseers could not fully understand, the chorus goes: “(Soloist) Pharaoh’s army. (Choir) Pharaoh’s army. (Soloist) I know you know that story of how they got drowned in the sea one day, oh yeah. (Choir) Drown in the Red Sea.” Franklin caresses the melody and draws extra meaning out of every word of a song that became popular again during the ‘60s civil rights movement. There’s more on view than just a memorable performance by one of America’s most famous vocalists. Also on exhibit is a musical form that has been an integral part of the black community since Africans first arrived in America. What audiences witness, through song and on display, is a rich resilient culture that has an undeniable affinity with music. Also, the love on view in this house of worship in Watts is not unique. It plays out on Sundays in black churches all over the country. It’s a continuous affirmation of customs. A spiritual calling. A communion with neighbors. And a front row seat to the evolution of black gospel music that started in fields and has grown into a very sophisticated art form with choirs, instruments and amplification.
Spirituals have come a long way. Kudos to Alan Elliott for managing and bringing to fruition a creative process that has stymied others for years. He does his best, considering some of the original footage is out of focus. Editor Jeff Buchanan magically weaves together the performances, anecdotes and crowd scenes into a very tight and enthralling 87 minutes. The sumptuous sound is courtesy of the Grammy-winning producer/engineer Jimmy Douglass who handles music mixing duties for this doc and also worked on previous Aretha albums like Spirit in the Dark and Young, Gifted and Black. The pacing and sound of this documentary is extraordinary, especially when you consider that soundsyncing was the foil that caused the film’s 46-year delay. Pastors are the noted spiritual guides in churches. What this documentary makes clear is that gospel singers have an equal influence. They bring hope, a sense of empowerment, soul cleansing and sacred massages. In fact, after church, quite often it is the singer’s words and tunes that linger long after the reverend’s sermon has been forgotten. In Amazing Grace, Aretha is a conduit who channels a spirit from above into the hearts of those who listen. With the premiere and distribution of this film, she can do that for eternity. At some point in this thoroughly compelling doc, Franklin prophetically sings: “… I’m climbing, Higher mountains, Higher mountains, Trying to get home…” Visit NNPA News Wire Film Critic Dwight Brown at DwightBrownInk.com and BlackPressUSA.com.

… You best put them on. Because the devil, as a roaring lion is going about this world seeking whom he may devour. His mission is to kill, steal, and to destroy. He doesn’t care who you are or where you come from. He doesn’t care where you’ve been or where you hope to be going. His motive is to disrupt and to dismantle any and all associations that you may have with God. Just like He did Job, the Devil is confronting God about you. His intent is to make you a lie. If you are a Christian, you are in a fierce war. In fact, you’re in a life and death battle for your faith. Satan is determined to shipwreck and destroy the faith of all of God’s elect. And the stronger your faith, the greater will be his attack against it. Why? Because, unshakable faith in the Lord causes Hell to rage. Nothing poses a greater threat to Satan’s kingdom than a Christian who is unmovable in faith. By faith, righteousness is born and demonic fires are quenched. By faith, God’s promises are obtained and the mouths of lions are shut. Your adversary has studied you and has coordinated a plan of attack. And his scheme is so widespread that if he cannot destroy you, he’ll aim his attacks towards the people closes to you and the interests that are near and dear to your heart. Therefore, you have to fight not just for yourself, but spiritual warfare involves praying the devil off of your kids, praying him away from your spouse, taking authority over the devil on your job, defeating the enemy that’s trying to take your mind. I tell you, “ This Means War!” If you ain’t got your war clothes on you best put them on! I don’t know about you, but I ain’t going out like this. I ain’t going out without a fight! I’m going to keep the devil where he belongs – under my feet. We are no longer under Satan’s power, but are empowered by God Almighty to defeat the devil when he comes against us! It is high time we learn that we have power and authority, through Jesus Christ, to walk in victory over the enemy. Jesus gave us that power, and as long as we humble ourselves before God, and submit ourselves to Him,
the enemy cannot defeat us. We can keep the devil in his place, right where God put him: under our feet. It’s up to us to put the devil on the run by using our authority, standing firm in our faith, and thanking God for what He has wrought for us. I tell you, the next time the devil tries to get in your way or block your path, lift your feet high, stomp loud, and let everyone know you are coming through town. The sound of the stomping and pounding of your feet is the signal to let everyone know they need to get out of your way. If the enemy is stupid enough to challenge you and tries to hinder your plans, just keep walking! If the devil tries to stop you, just raise your feet high, pound down as hard as you can, and stomp all over him as you march forward. Crush and bruise him beyond recognition!” However, it is important to point out that this smashing and crushing of Satan must be done in cooperation with God. Alone you are no match for this archenemy. That’s the reason Paul says, “…The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet….” In other words, this is a joint partnership between you and God. By yourself, you could never keep Satan subdued. But with God as your Partner, the devil has no chance of ever slipping out from under your heel! [Romans 16:20] Never forget – the only place that rightfully belongs to the devil is the small space of ground right under your feet! Jesus accomplished a total, complete, and perfect work through the Cross of Calvary and His resurrection from the dead. The victory is already yours… FIGHT! Don’t allow the enemy to ruin you or anyone else that you know. Your family is worth fighting for. Your health is worth fighting for. Your peace of mind is worth fighting for. If you have to roll up your sleeves and go hand to hand, fight for it. Because if one can put a thousand to flight and two can put ten thousand to flight, then sooner or later, everything around you will be covered by the power of God! Declaring War on the Devil! Are there any believers left who are indignant at the assault of the enemy? Where are the redeemed who are still proud of their God and still mad at the devil? We are called and equipped to be soldiers of Christ. God has given us everything we need to win; he has assured us of victory, and those who overcome shall reign with Jesus forever. Therefore arise, fight, and never give up!

Michelle Obama’s New Book “Becoming
Crown Publishing Group has confirmed that First Lady Michelle Obama sold more than 725,000 copies of her newest book Becoming in just one day. The sales figure includes hardcover, audio and e-books editions for the United States and Canada, but the book is available in 24 languages around the world including Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Hebrew! Mrs. Obama has broken a record - already surpassing
the first day sales of other memoirs also written by first ladies. For example, Hillary Clinton’s Living History, which was released in 2003, sold only around 600,000 copies in it's first week! In Becoming, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, she invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an execu-
tive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is an unusually intimate reckoning from a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations
- and whose story inspires us to do the same. Helping to kick off the book's launch, Mrs. Obama launched a U.S. and international book tour that sold out almost instantly. Each of her appearances was moderated by one of her many friends like Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Valerie Jarrett, Reese Witherspoon, and more. I am deeply troubled by the continued escalation and racist rhetoric against Central American migrants and others heading towards our border. The unbridled dehumanizing, demonizing, and racist assertions by our current president are now institutionally supported with expanded Border Patrol and Immigration Customs Enforcement law enforcement branches. These groups, along with the administration, have yet to be held accountable for the human rights abuses they enacted by separating children from parents, detaining asylum seekers in what amounts to prisons and concentration camps, and sending children to be adopted while parents are deported (amounting to human trafficking). Now, in a grand show of escalation and with no regard for the violence and abuses that continue, the US military deployed to the border because of the coming migrant caravan. My soul is deeply troubled within me. The violence being sown by this escalation of racism and fear cannot be understated. Stand Your Ground laws hold the perception of danger, not actual danger, as an acceptable reason for a civilian to use lethal force. Similarly, in the aftermath of a police shooting, law enforcement officers need only to convey they were afraid, whether the perceived threat was a reality or not. The confluence of racism and civilian gun violence, as well as racism and state violence, lead to too many murders and too many bodies, particularly of black and brown people. As Rev. Traci Blackmon said, “How can I be disarmed when what you fear
is my blackness?” How do these migrants have any chance of receiving compassion and care when the air is thick with racism and fear? The caravan contains many families with young children. They are never named as such. They are never named by the state as humans fleeing violence and poverty. They are “invaders” and predictably, militia groups are traveling to the border, self-proclaimed protectors. The fear is already here; it is preemptively justified. Will the bodies of brown children and parents start piling up? My soul is deeply troubled within me. How can we, fully awake to all of these things, create a caravan of compassion? Passion: to suffer for. Com: meaning “with.” Compassion is a solidarity willing to suffer with. It is a deeply Christian kind of love. It is a deeply Christian calling. How many of us will come together? How far will we walk to extend compassion? Our siblings are walking thousands of miles, looking for a place and a people to affirm their humanity. We must be ready to meet them, at the border, in our communities, and in our churches. We must call out the racist and fear-escalating rhetoric for what it is: dehumanizing violence. We must continue to demand justice for children detained and separated from their parents. We must overcome this together. NEWS/ AD VER TISING ADVER VERTISING
UPDATE: Name of Officer Who Shot Black Security Guard Will Not Be Released, Says Judge "Let's just follow the rules here," said U.S. District judge Joan Lefkow. by Jayme S. Ganey
Attorneys representing Jemel Roberson's family said they knew the name of the officer who shot him, but wanted the Midloathian Police Department to release it. On Monday, Gregory Kulis and Lee Merritt filed a motion to release the name, along with a subpoena requiring the state police to turn over all reports, witness statements, names and footage. U.S. District judge Joan Lefkow said no on Tuesday. Siding with the police's attorney, Michael Stephenson, who called it "an attempt to side-step the basic rules of motion practice," Lefkow said, "Let's just follow the rules here." Stephenson complained that there wasn't enough time to review the subpoena and respond. Kulis had asked for all information by Nov. 30. Stephenson requested Dec. 17 to respond — 30 days from the time it was issued. Lefkow also said the media has spun the state police's preliminary findings, though she said she had not reviewed the news release containing the findings. The Illiniois State Task Force released preliminary findings, less than three days after the incident, which contradicted reports that Jemel Roberson wasn't easily identifiable as a security officer when the shooting occurred. "The public should have the right to know who this officer is," Kulis said in court Tuesday. "I should have the right to know who this officer is." "Why can't they just give me the name of the individual?" he said.
Kulis also had said of what had been released from the Robbins Police Department, that it was "kind of bizarre" that the report doesn't mention Roberson or his death. It does identify the bar shooter and the four gunshot victims. It seems that while this story of delayed information about police shootings and the judicial system failing people of color when it comes to justice is not new, shooting a security guard is an anomaly. "In 35 years, I've never seen security get shot by police," said Abe Khan, owner of Chicago's Reliance Security Services. "I would like to know what happened. It's crazy. Police officers don't do that." If proper attire identifying him was a factor, then there would not be a need to fire. Anthony C. Thompson, Professor of Clinical Law at New York University School of Law, said incidents involving police and armed Black men continue to "propagate the notion that Black America and white America have a very different approach to law enforcement." "If a Black man has a gun in America, police have their hands on their trigger," Thompson said. When a white person has a gun, "there is a different outcome." Reader Question: Do you think the judge should have approved the motion requesting the police officer's name to be released?
California’s Legislators Lack Private Sector Experience..continued from page 6 Business vs. Government Background What might explain this tepid drift to the center, at least in terms of more Republican state legislators with public sector experience, and more Democratic state legislators with private sector experience? One explanation could be the open primary, which makes it less likely an extreme candidate will survive the general election. Another could be the decision made around 2010 by California’s beleaguered business community to start supporting pro-business Democrats. Finally, as Republicans in California fade further into irrelevance, the alliances and allegiances formed in public sector work offer Republican candidates with that background a better chance of electoral success. Public Sector Unions Pick Public Sector Careerists to Run for Public Office Back in the 1950’s and 1960’s there were plenty of pro-business Democrats, so called “Pat Brown” Democrats, who worked with Gov. Brown Sr. to build freeways, bridges, power plants, and the finest system of water storage and conveyance the world had ever seen. Those same Democrats cooperated with Republican Governor Reagan a few years later to build the finest public university system in the world. The opportunities available to California’s middle class were unrivaled. What happened to these Democrats? The problems began in the 1970’s when public sector unions were allowed to form. Steadily acquiring political power through automatic dues deductions, they used taxpayer’s money to lobby for the interests of government workers instead of the interests of the people they serve. Increasingly, business-backed candidates started losing races to candidates backed by government unions. Almost invariably, unions
backed Democratic candidates. The more powerful these unionbacked candidates became, the more laws they enacted to further consolidate their power. Today government union rule in California is absolute. The tragedy of unionized government is not merely that they have taken over California’s state legislature and nearly every city, county and school board in the state in order to pursue their membership’s interest above the public interest. It is that most elected officials no longer understand business. These union anointed elected officials come from government agencies, union bureaucracies, nonprofits, activism, and public education. Most of California’s legislators have never had to balance a budget, make a payroll, or convince a customer to voluntarily purchase a product so they could earn a precarious profit in a competitive market. California’s lawmakers, to the extent they are elected with the support of public sector unions and to the extent they lack business experience, not only face a conflict of interests every time they have to deal with a reform that threatens the power of the unions. They are also less qualified to understand the financial and operational realities that apply in any efficiently ran, productive organization, large or small. They are in over their heads. To exemplify this, consider how California’s democrats are crowing over a $6 billion budget surplus. Compare that $6 billion surplus to the nearly half-trillion in bond debt that California’s state and local governments have piled up, including another $23 billion on Nov. 6th. Compare that $6 billion surplus to, by most reasonable estimates, the more than halftrillion in unfunded retirement benefits that are going to blow sky high in the next market downturn. Hint. A trillion is a thousand billion.

San Bernardino, CA – Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-San Bernardino) announced that the United States Senate passed his bill to name the United States Post Office located at 390 West 5th Street in San Bernardino after Jack H. Brown, the late Inland Empire philanthropist and community leader who served as Executive Chairman of Stater Bros. Markets. Aguilar introduced the bill in the House of Representatives last year to honor Jack Brown’s memory after he passed away in 2016. The bill passed the House earlier this year. “Jack H. Brown represented what makes the Inland Empire such a great place to live, work and raise a family. He was a compassionate neighbor who dedicated his life to serving the community. His work has changed the lives of countless young people throughout San Bernardino County, and he deserves to be
recognized for his lifetime of achievements. Jack’s legacy is a permanent reminder of the good we can all do if we dedicate ourselves to serving others, and I’m proud that his name will serve as a reminder of that legacy in downtown San Bernardino,” said Aguilar. Upon receiving news that the bill to honor Jack had passed the Senate, the Brown family commented, “We’re grateful that both the House and the Senate were able to work in a bipartisan way to honor Jack. He spent a lifetime working to serve the Inland Empire, and we’re proud to see that service recognized by the United States Congress.” Prior to the bill’s passage in the House, Rep. Aguilar delivered a speech on the House Floor in honor of Jack H. Brown which can be viewed here. The bill will now be presented to the president to be signed into law.
