London Breed made history to become the first African American woman mayor of San Francisco, Calif. (Freddie Allen/AMG/NNPA) London Breed has made history, becoming the first African American woman elected mayor in San Francisco after her opponent conceded in what had been a razor-close race. Breed, who had been appointed mayor last December following the death of Mayor Ed Lee, was forced out of the post after officials cited a conflict with her position on the city’s Board of Supervisors. She defeated former State Senator Mark Leno in a close race that came down to 14,000 provisional ballots counted, over the past week.

“I am London Breed, I am president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and soon to be mayor of the city and county of San Francisco,” she told a crowd gathered downtown after Leno conceded. “I am truly humbled, and I am truly honored.” Born in San Francisco, Breed was raised by her grandmother in the city’s public housing. Breed praised United States Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), among others, as being an influence. She said she wanted to emulate her grandmother, who took care of the community and looked after everyone.

“It’s really amazing, and it’s really an honor and I know it means so much to so many people,” she said, responding to a question about being the first African American female to earn election to the city’s mayor’s office. “This is my home and I grew up in some of the most challenging of circumstances.” Breed continued: “I think the message that this sends to the next generation of young people growing up in this city, that no matter where you come from, you can do anything you want to do.” In a January interview with NNPA Newswire, Breed said she

planned to remain the same outspoken, 43-year-old who was raised on the hard knock streets of the Fillmore District, just southwest of Nob Hill. “People sometimes say about me, ‘I can’t believe, she said that.’ I remind them, I’m from Fillmore, but I say it in the way we say it in the streets—‘Fill-Mo,’” Breed said. “When you come from the kind of community that I come from and experience a lot of frustration, if you are not outspoken you can’t get the things done that you need to [get done].” After first being appointed to take over for Lee after his death on December 12, local media noted that Breed has been criticized for being “headstrong” and “outspoken,” once even announcing to her peers that she “was no shrinking violet.” “I am who I am, and I didn’t think I’d ever run for office, because I am who I am,” Breed said. “I say what I feel like I need to say and that’s how I’ve always been, and I couldn’t live with myself, if I felt that I have to change to be an elected official.” This article was originally published on BlackPressUSA.com. SAN BERNARDINO, California?—In March 2018, San Bernardino Valley College was awarded 17 silver and bronze “Strong Workforce Stars” by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office to recognize it for increasing graduate earnings by up to 551%, as well as for helping students to attain a regional living wage and find employment in their field of study. “Strong Workforce Stars” is an annual recognition for career education programs within the California Community Colleges system whose graduates show sig-

nificant gains in factors important for advancing social mobility: a substantial increase in earnings, attainment of a living wage and a job closely matched with the field of study. The 2018 Strong Workforce Stars were given to programs throughout the state that met one or more of the following thresholds: An increase in earnings by 50 percent or more, based on a match to the state wage file, for students who earned a certificate or degree and were last enrolled in 2015-16. SBVC’s nursing program increased earnings by 53%, with 83% of graduates attaining the regional living wage. Amid President Trump’s headaches confirming cabinet secretaries, from neophyte Rex Tillerson to conflict-prone Scott Pruitt to unprepared Betsy DeVos, all of whom squeezed through, Wilbur Ross was a tonic. With his blue power suit and decades of deal making, he had the look and the résumé of a commerce secretary. And unlike his boss, Ross promised to divest from almost all his holdings upon entering government, drawing bipartisan praise en route to an easy confirmation. “You have really made a very personal sacrifice,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut. “Your service has resulted in your divesting yourself of literally hundreds of millions of dollars.” In November 2017, Ross confirmed in writing to the federal Office of Government Ethics that he had divested everything he promised. But that was not true. After weeks of investigation, Forbes found: ·For most of last year, Ross served as secretary of commerce while maintaining stakes in companies co-owned by the Chinese government, a shipping firm tied to Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, a Cypriot bank reportedly caught up in the Robert Mueller investigation and a huge player in an industry Ross is now investigating. It’s hard to imagine a more radioactive portfolio for a cabinet member. To this day, Ross’ family apparently continues to have an interest in these toxic holdings. Rather than dump them all, the commerce secretary sold some of his interests to Goldman Sachs—and, according to Ross himself, put others in a trust for his family members. He continued to deal with China, Russia and others while evidently knowing that his family’s interests were tied to those countries. In addition, five days before reports surfaced last fall that Ross was connected to cronies of Vladimir Putin through a shipping firm called Navigator Holdings, the secretary of commerce, who likely knew about the reporting, shorted stock in the Kremlinlinked company, positioning him-

self to make money on the investment when share prices dropped. Absurdly, maintaining all those conflicts of interest appears to be entirely legal—a reflection of ethics laws woefully unprepared for governing tycoons like Donald Trump and Wilbur Ross. Ross appears to have broken one law, however: submitting a sworn statement to federal officials in November saying he divested of everything he had promised he would—even though he still held more than $10 million worth of stock in financial firm Invesco, his former employer. He also continued to hold a short position in a bank called Sun Bancorp, a company he had promised to divest. The next month, Ross got rid of interests in both. What does Ross say about all of this now? Not much. When Forbes asked, a month ago, what became of his holdings, he passed the message to his spokesman, who said he hoped to have an answer the next day. Five days later, he sent a one-sentence statement, promising Ross’ current assets would be reflected on an annual financial disclosure, which he had not yet filed. Given two weeks to respond to a list of detailed questions, the spokesperson declined to answer most of them but underscored that Ross eventually divested of his holdings. The spokesperson also issued a statement about whether Ross had broken the law by lying to federal officials. “The secretary did not lie,” he said, adding that Ross filed amended paperwork, which is currently under review by the Office of Government Ethics. Wilbur Ross is not known for telling the truth. On a Sunday afternoon last fall, just back from a trip to Asia, Ross called Forbes to lie about his personal fortune. Forbes had listed the commerce secretary on its billionaires’ rankings for years, but his financial disclosure report revealed less than $700 million in assets. When pressed about the discrepancy, Ross calmly cited more than $2 billion in undisclosed assets, saying he had shifted a chunk of his fortune to a trust for his family.

Dr. Elizabeth Primas says that ESSA places increased priority on parental engagement and requires states to provide innovative strategies to incorporate parental and family engagement into a school’s decision-making. The National Family Engagement Summit of 2018 was held in Richmond, Va. Throughout the summit, multiple opportunities were provided for attendees to interact with some of the nation’s leading experts in parent and family engagement. Participants came from near and far. Over 300 teachers, parents, administrators, and community activists participated, presented, networked, taught and learned strategies to increase family engagement. One presenter described the difference between involvement and engagement as the level of commitment, stating, “It’s like you’ve got a ring on it! You’re not just passively attending a few parentteacher meetings, but you’re planning, making decisions, running for the school board and more.” The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), speaks specifically to parent and family engagement. Data highlighted examples of the successful impact parents can have when they are present in their child’s school. One presenter pointed out that, “Parents tend to be extremely involved with students in the early elementary grades. They bring them to school, speak with the teacher frequently, and are more likely to volunteer for field trips, classroom activities, and attend parent-teacher meetings.” However, around the third grade, parents

start to reduce their involvement. They attend fewer meetings, volunteer for field-trips and other events less, and seldom spend time in the building. In some cases, they may have only met the teacher just once. When students reach third grade and began to socialize more independently with friends, parent engagement often wanes. It’s not surprising that after requiring almost, constant supervision that parents breathe a sigh of relief when their children gain newfound independence. However, these are the times when our children require increased attention, specifically our young Black males. There is significant data to show a correlation between K-12 completion, literacy, and adulthood incarceration. The NAACP reported that African Americans are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of Whites and, nationwide, African American children represent 32 percent of children who are arrested. Blacks make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population. Patterns, such as, absenteeism, delinquent behavior, and academic apathy, correlate with high suspension rates and subsequent incarceration. ESSA places increased priority on parental engagement and requires states to provide innova-

State Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) was pleased with the areas the budget addressed. "With this budget, we continue our efforts to strengthen the state’s commitment to human infrastructure, with much needed additional resources for childcare, targeted resources for higher education and financial aid, additional funds for the courts and diversion and rehabilitative services, and significant ongoing increases to K-14 education,” she said. In a Facebook post-Mitchell wrote, "Happiness is: (1) when the budget bill has your name on it (2) includes major investments for California’s children and (3) it's done!" Assembly Budget Committee Member Melissa Melendez (RLake Elsinore) criticized the budget, which was passed by a Democratic majority. She questioned if taxpayers were getting their money’s worth. "California has the highest poverty rate in the nation, is ranked lowest for quality of life out of all 50 states, and has become so unaffordable that one million more residents have left the state than have moved here in the last decade,” said Melendez. “At some point, you have to wonder what taxpayers have gotten for the money they send to government. It doesn't appear to be much.” She added the budget didn't address pressing issues such as rental costs and rising utility bills.

Keipp described the program’s expansion as the culmination of “a big-picture effort to improve the future of youth in the two counties.” The Growing Inland Achievement grant, he explained, will allow UCR to invest in more classrooms, instructional support, and course offerings, although students from both counties will attend the same monthly seminar sessions. “One of the biggest benefits of expanding our program into San Bernardino County, aside from increasing the number of interactions between teachers and students, is that we’ll also be able to diversify our instructional op-

As a result, the program will maintain its roster of eight traditional course offerings — including biology, calculus, chemistry, computer science, and physics — while adding two new seminars in world history and human geography. According to Gil Compton, director of College and Career Readiness at RCOE, participation in college-level AP courses, which are among the most rigorous courses offered to high schoolers in the United States, can often be an indicator of laterin-life success. In particular, studies have shown that when a student completes one AP course during high school, he or she has a 40 percent higher chance of obtaining a four-year degree. In Los Angeles County, where the AP Readiness program was piloted, meanwhile, data indicates that students who attended AP Readiness seminars had a 20 percent higher passage rate on their end-of-year examinations than students who didn’t attend.

Democrats Approve $200B Budget That Sets Aside Money for LowAchieving Students And More

The California Senate has approved an almost $200 billion budget which set asides money for several issues that progressive groups deem important such as education, homelessness and transportation. The budget also approves $300 million for schools to boost the academic performance of underachieving students. Thiswas an issue that black voters and legislators had lobbied for. However, it is a compromise with Assemblywoman Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) who had requested ongoing funding for this project. The $300 million is a one-time funding allocation. "We cannot look the other way anymore. African-American kids in California persistently fall behind academically,” said Weber when she was lobbying for the funding. "And this problem is not limited to low-income students either. Parents have been patiently waiting for something to change, but it has not. Providing additional resources for the lowest-performing students is now no longer an option, but a necessity.” Other takeaways from the budget include:

We must do everything possible to attract and retain the most qualified to our profession, and then support them as they begin their career. The increases in funding for Special Education, school safety, the state preschool program, childcare, and healthcare for low-income families are also critically important. “Governor Jerry Brown has been the right leader in a difficult time for our state. He stepped in and turned things around for California when we were experiencing an epic recession. His leadership and collaboration with educators, working families, students, parents and community partners led to passage of Proposition 30 in 2012 followed by the work we all did to pass Prop. 55 in 2016. This effort laid the groundwork for the increased revenues leading to the surplus we have today. “Even with these increases, California ranks 44th in the nation in per pupil funding. It’s clear we still have more work to do to increase per-pupil funding, but we are now moving in the right direction.”

AP Readiness Program Expands to San Bernardino County...continued

Wilcox celebrate the expansion of the AP Readiness program into San Bernardino County. RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — A $150,000 grant will enable the University of California, Riverside’s Graduate School of Education to strengthen and grow one of its most successful regional partnerships. Launched in 2016, the UCR AP Readiness program is the product of a collaboration between the university’s Graduate School of Education, or GSOE, and the Riverside County Office of Education, or RCOE. It provides academic and instructional support to high school students and teachers who participate in and lead Advanced Placement courses in all 23 RCOE districts. The premise is simple: AP teachers attend monthly seminars alongside their students, with both parties benefiting from various levels of supplemental instruction, lesson modeling, and peer-to-peer networking. Held on Saturdays at UCR, all seminars are taught by vetted master instructors — usually current or retired AP teachers with records of previously high-performing classes. Beginning in fall 2018, AP Readiness will grow in scale to also incorporate students and teachers from the districts within neighboring San Bernardino County. The program’s expansion comes courtesy of a two-year Innovation Award presented to UCR in May by the bicounty collaborative Growing Inland Achievement. Composed of various leaders in Riverside and San Bernardino counties’ education, business, and civic sectors, Growing Inland Achievement is geared toward improving educational attainment rates throughout the larger Inland Empire region as a means of furthering economic progress.

GSOE Dean Thomas Smith praised the expansion as a critical signifier of UCR’s commitment to the surrounding community and its goal of promoting college and career readiness. “To some, it might seem like our university’s work focuses only on Riverside County, but we want to ensure we’re also serving students in San Bernardino County and the surrounding areas,” Smith added. “There’s just as much need in San Bernardino County as there is in Riverside County.” Smith emphasized the AP Readiness program’s potential to empower teachers, especially when it comes to building support networks across schools and districts. By encouraging educators to discuss teaching strategies and share materials, he said, the AP Readiness program will have a significant impact on the quality of AP education in the two counties. Johnny Coogan, a veteran educator who teaches AP English language at Elsinore High School in Wildomar, said he has appreciated the opportunity to learn from other teachers during the past two years of AP Readiness sessions. “When I’m in a session, the teachers are teaching exactly what I teach, so I can take their points and maybe add some of my own flavor to the mix when I teach (the same material),” said Coogan, who has participated in AP Readiness sessions since the program’s inception and also served as one of its master instructors over the past year. “I’m always telling other AP teachers to send their students,” he added. Since 2002, the AP World History course has covered thousands of years of human activity around the planet, starting 10,000 years back. But now the College Board, which owns the Advanced Placement program, wants to cut out most of that history and start the course at the year 1450 — and some teachers and students are appalled. The College Board, which is a nonprofit organization, an-

nounced recently that it was making big changes in the course, and said it would publish an updated course and exam description next year for the 2019-20 school year. The more than 9,000 years that will no longer be covered in AP World History will instead be put into a new series of courses the College Board is creating for high schools that can afford to purchase it, called Pre-AP World History and Geography.

Administrators and teachers are encouraged to schedule meetings that accommodate parents with different hours of availability. ESSA does not dictate the ways in which schools are required to engage parents. However, educators should recognize the crucial role parental partnerships play in preparing students for college and careers. This summer, the National Newspaper Publishers Association will host its second National Black Parents’ Town Hall Meeting on Educational Excellence.

California Legislative Black Caucus Declares Victory for 2018-19 Budget State/Government News Sacramento – The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC), led by its Chairman, Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena), declared victory in securing funds related to the Caucus’ budget priorities. The CLBC was able to negotiate constructively with legislative colleagues in both the Senate and Assembly, as well as Governor Jerry Brown, to pass California’s remarkable $199.3 billion budget. “The Caucus is very pleased with this year’s budget as it reflects the great work to be accomplished in the upcoming years,” said Chair Holden. The 2018 funded CLBC budget requests included: Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF): $300 million (one-time, Prop. 98 funding), ·UCLA/Ralph Bunche Center for African-American Studies: $1.8 million (one-time funding), · California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH): $1 million (one-time funding), and · California African American Museum (CAAM): $2.6 million (one-time funding), and $350,000 (ongoing funding). Weber (D-San Diego), who championed the LCFF budget proposal, stated, “We cannot look the other way anymore. African American kids in California persistently fall behind academically. Providing additional resources for the lowest-performing students is now no longer an option, but a necessity," she said. Under this new proposal, an additional $300 million dollars will be available to schools for assisting those students who need additional help but do not receive it under the current Local Control Funding Formula. Schools will receive funding through a grant making program that requires a detailed plan describing how the funds will be used for evidencebased programs to improve student achievement. This funding will be used to develop new research projects, including technology industry diversity, and their existing research endeavors. Has Your School’s Drinking Water Been Tested for Lead? New Online Maps Show Results for Lead Testing at Public Schools State/Government News

SACRAMENTO -- The State Water Resources Control Board has released a new map-based web tool that shows which public schools in California have had their drinking water tested for lead. “Our newly developed website allows the public to search the status of lead testing of drinking water at schools in their area,” said Darrin Polhemus, State Water Board’s Division of Drinking Water deputy director. “This tool allows the public to stay informed as we continue to receive more results from the mandatory testing of public schools.” Under Assembly Bill 746, which took effect Jan. 1, community water systems statewide are now required to complete lead sampling on the drinking water supplies of K-12 public schools and day care and preschools on public school properties built before 2010. Water systems must complete this mandatory sampling by July 1, 2019. With about 12 months to go before the deadline, approximately 30 percent of California’s 10,000 public schools have been sampled for lead. Water systems that do not complete this mandatory sampling could face enforcement action from the State Water Board’s Division of Drinking Water. Most public, K-12 schools in California are served by the more than 1,200 community water systems in the state. While these community water systems extensively and regularly test their drinking water for lead, lead could get into clean water at a school campus if there were corroded pipes or old fixtures at the school. Lead sampling is done at drinking fountains and faucets used for consumption and preparing food. A water system must report the testing results within two

business days if any samples show lead levels above 15 parts per billion (ppb). Water systems have 10 business days to report results if samples show lead levels less than, or equal to, 15 ppb. If a school’s lead level exceeds 15 ppb, then the water system is required to sample water entering the school to help determine the possible source of lead. The school must also take several actions, including shutting down all fountains and faucets with high lead levels, providing potable drinking water until the situation is resolved, and notifying parents and guardians of students. Additional testing may be required to determine if all or just some of the school’s fountains and faucets are required to be shut down. Private schools are not required to be sampled under AB 746 but may request free sampling under the State Water Board’s voluntary Lead Sampling in Schools Program, which remains in effect until Nov. 1, 2019. Because California has newer infrastructure and less corrosive water than other parts of the country, less than 1 percent of all samples collected so far have detected elevated levels of lead. However, national events have highlighted the importance of ongoing water quality monitoring and in 2015 Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. directed the State Water Board to incorporate schools into the regular water quality testing that community water systems conduct at customer’s taps. OP-ED: Black Mamas Are Dying. We Can Stop It. By Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) Black mothers are dying and it’s time to do something about it. Every year, more than 700 American mothers lose their lives to pregnancy or birth-related complications. Some medical professionals estimate that at least half, if not more, of these deaths are entirely preventable. While the deaths of 700-plus American mothers should shock us all, the statistics are much worse for African American mothers. We are three-to-four times more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than our White counterparts. A 2010-2011 survey of maternal deaths in Philadelphia found that threequarters of those deaths were Black mothers. These shocking statistics cut across class, education level, and socio-economic status. Earlier this year, Serena Williams shared her own story of nearly losing her life. She, like too many other women, was ignored when she raised concerns about her own health and body. If this tragedy can befall a wealthy, world-class athlete who’s deeply in tuned with her own body, it could, and does, happen to anyone. Sadly, the situation is getting worse, not better. American mothers are dying at higher rates every year. Globally, we’ve had real success in pushing down the rates of mothers needlessly dying, especially in Africa and the Caribbean. Yet at the same time, the U.S. is one of a handful of nations where the number of mothers dying is increasing. We can and must do better. All

From Research to Treatments Scientist Reveals How Technology is Uncovering Cures for Lyme Disease Health/Fitness News

More than 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne illness in the United States, are diagnosed each year. The black suicide rate was 0.53 per million among children ages 5 to 9; the white suicide rate was 0.19 per million. Suicide rates were also higher among black children 10, 11 and 12 years old. When it comes to the suicide rate among Black teens as compared to children, there is a major contrast. The number of Black adolescents who take their own lives is half that of white children, researchers, who analyzed the data from 2001-2015 for children ages 5-12 and adolescents ages 13-17, said. Doctors Jeffrey Bridge and Lisa Horowitz —researchers from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and the National Institutes of Mental Health’s Intramural Research Program respectively — worked with coauthors on analyzing data from the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention’s Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS.) There were 1,661 suicide deaths of Black children ages 5 to 17 from 2001 to 2015, researchers recorded. There were 13,341 suicide deaths in white children. An earlier 2016 study, published in the Pediatrics journal and cited by CNN, found that that suicide is on the rise among elementary school-age African-American children. This horrifying study said that Black boys were most likely to die of self-inflicted hanging and suffocation. There are some big questions that will have to be explored after these two studies, including what are all the factors contributing to suicide rates among Black children that outpace that of whites in the 5-12 age group. Yes, more research and understanding of this racial disparity is surely needed. Black communities can deeper examine what is going on in their schools, health facilities and neighborhoods to further understand the particular toxic stresses that impact Black children. An understanding of the messages being sent at these places to children and the warning signs of suicide must are also important to strengthening intervention and prevention efforts.

Conscientious parents constantly remind their children to brush and floss, and routinely schedule dental checkups to make sure their teeth and gums are healthy – and staying that way. But youngsters aren’t the only ones who who can use such reminders. Older Americans need to put a priority on their oral health as well, and research shows that as a group they aren’t doing so. In fact, the statistics are grim. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that almost every single American over age 65 (96 percent) has had a cavity, and 20 percent have untreated tooth decay. Another 65 percent suffer from gum disease, an ailment that has been linked to a host of other problems, such as strokes, heart disease and diabetes. “Anyone who thinks they can ease up on dental care as they age is making a big mistake,” says

hospital systems because, if it’s working, we want every doctor to know about it. Additionally, the MOMMA Act would expand access to care by ensuring that mothers retain their Medicaid coverage for one year after giving birth, the entire postpartum period. Right now, mothers lose their coverage just two months after giving birth. However, many women face significant health challenges, often weeks and months, after giving birth. One mom who spoke at my press conference unveiling the bill suffered a childbirth-related stroke 20 days after giving birth. Furthermore, we know that postpartum depression and other health challenges face new mothers; expanding access to care will ensure that moms remain healthy as they raise their families. would improve access to culturally-competent care throughout the care continuum. For decades, we’ve known that culturally-incompetent care has had massive and negative impacts on our community and our health. In 2018, it’s time to train health professionals to give appropriate care to all patients, regardless of their race. I could not be prouder to have introduced the MOMMA Act or to have worked with the amazing women and men who helped us craft this important legislation to save mothers’ lives. It’s the product of months of work with families, mothers, doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas and policy advocates. In the battle to save the lives of our mothers, daughters and sisters, “WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease,” is one of the greatest allies that families have against the deadly disease, the leading cause of death among women in the United States. WomenHeart, “the nation’s only patient-centered organization solely serving millions of American women living with or at risk for heart disease,” according to the group’s website, recently celebrated the people and organizations that are on the frontlines of that battle, during the 18th Annual Wenger Awards in Washington, D.C. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an astounding one in four women die from heart disease every year. Nearly 8 percent of Black women have coronary heart disease—the highest rate among all women; about 6 percent of White women have coronary heart disease. As an actress and a natural advocate for healthy living, Chandra Wilson, who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey on the hit ABC television show “Grey’s Anatomy,” highlighted the importance of regular heart screenings and the need for better healthcare access for women, during the awards ceremony. Wilson was honored with the “Excellence in Media” award during the event. “Nobody knows your battle better than you do…there are things that you need a physician to specifically listen for,” Wilson said. “You need to know your statistics, specifically women of color.” Wilson also talked about the impact of heart disease on her own family. “Even though, women face challenges with heart disease that are somewhat different from men, my father passed away from heart disease at age 55,” Wilson said. “And while he was aware of heart disease, he was never taught ‘Okay, this is what you do. Film Review: Fans of the Franchise Will Love “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” By Dwight Brown (NNPA News Wire Film Critic)

Tyrannosaurus, velociraptors and brachiosaurus—run for your lives. The cloned dinosaurs from the theme park Jurassic World are in trouble on the volcanic isle of Isla Nublar, which is erupting, spewing hot lava and emitting a deadly ash cloud. If they aren’t rescued, they will die. That’s the premise in this sequel to “Jurassic World” ($1.7B at the box office). The question is this: Will this follow-up to the wildly successful “Jurassic World” be enough to hook action/adventure/sci-fi fans and reel them into the theaters? Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World, passes on direction duties to Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (“Orphanage,” “The Impossible”), and the difference in style is negligible. Trevorrow writes the script with Derek Connolly (“Jurassic World,” “Kong: Skull Island”). Editor Bernat Vilaplana worked with Bayona on “The Impossible,” as did cinematographer Oscar Faura. Composer Michael Giacchino won an Oscar for his original score for the animated feature “Up”. Add in creature sculptor Wayne Anderson (“Underworld: Blood Wars”) and it’s no wonder that the footage rips along at a breakneck pace, with wondrous views of a paradise island being ravaged by 700-de-

gree orange liquid rock and ancient beast clones running rampant. Everything is neatly coordinated—right down to the last scream for help. Three years have passed. Isla Nublar, an isle 120 miles west of Costa Rica that housed the now abandoned reptile theme park, is desolate except for lush green vegetation and gigantic beasts. The Dinosaur Protection Group, run by former theme park manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard, “Jurassic World,” “The Help”), is out to save the gigantic animals. They aren’t as aggressive as PETA, but they’re dedicated. Claire is approached by the duplicitous Eli Mills (“Rafe Spall,”” Life of Pi,” “The Big Short”), who has a plan to relocate the behemoths to a sanctuary, but not out of the kindness of his heart. Dearing is pulled into the mission. She enlists her ex-boyfriend Owen (Chris Pratt), who trained some of the less hostile and very intelligent velociraptors. A techy/ hacker, Franklin Webb (“Justice Smith,” “The Get Down”), and an equally young paleo/veterinarian, Zia Rodriguez (Danielle Pineda, TV’s “The Detour”), become part of the Ateam. Of course, nothing goes as planned. The simple premise hovers around animal rescue. Working within that blueprint, the film moves quickly to add in a chain

Everyone has a right to live. That statement, the focus of this week's Poor People's Campaign rally in Washington, D.C., on June 11, prompted powerful speeches, drew signs with a number of different calls to action around jobs, income, the right to organize and housing, resulted in more 100 arrests in the streets in front of the U.S. Capitol and spurred several clergy members to put their bodies on the line on the steps of the Supreme Court. The Rev. Damaris Whittaker, senior minister of Fort Washington Collegiate Church in New York City, drew attention to the thousands of American citizens in Puerto Rico still in crisis following Hurricane Maria. New data shows the death toll from the storm is much higher than originally indicated. "Everybody has a right to live, including the American citizens in Puerto Rico," Whittaker said. "Following the storm 179,000 people left because there were not enough jobs, housing, clean water. We are now in an education crisis as well. More than 266 schools have been closed. I have been there walking the streets and going to the schools and it's the most vulnerable children - those who are hearing impaired, those who have physical needs, those who are physically challenged - they are the ones left without a contingency plan for their education. I am here standing, saying everyone has a right to live including the people in Puerto Rico." Cheryl Leanza, policy advisor for Office of Communication Inc., the UCC's media justice arm, wanted to call attention to the need for a free and open internet. "On June 11 the repeal

of Net Neutrality took effect," she said, noting that O.C., Inc, and the members of its Faithful Internet campaign continue to protest the repeal and were attending Poor People's Campaign events around the country. "Net Neutrality is essential for social justice efforts like the Poor People's Campaign, and Net Neutrality is necessary to be sure everyone is treated fairly online-no matter the color of their skin or money in their pocket." Staffers of the UCC Washington, D.C. office, accompanied by a group of advocates from First Congregational Church of Rockford UCC in Rockford, Mich., joined the witness to hold lawmakers accountable for changing government policies that impact vulnerable people. "Every day, it seems, there is another wave of attacks on the poor and vulnerable in our country. Recently proposed restrictions on food stamps, public housing and health care are the tip of the iceberg. Enough is enough," said Sandy Sorensen, director of the UCC D.C. Office. "In this 50th anniversary year of the Poor Peoples Campaign, we must once again stand in the breach and push back against inhumane policy decisions." More than 100 people were arrested for blocking traffic in front of the Capitol during the rally. The Rev. Graylan Hagler, senior pastor of Plymouth Congregational, in Washington, D.C., and two clergy from Fort Washington Collegiate Church, the Rev. Rob Stephens, Minister for Congregational Life, and Rev. Hershey Stephens, were among nine faith leaders arrested while praying on the steps of the Supreme Court, calling attention to how Court rulings impact 'the right to live.' They were protesting to draw attention to the Court’s Husted decision, which upholds voter suppression, and the looming Janus decision, which (continued in next 2 columns)

FALLENKINGDOM_002 Justice Smith (“The Get Down”) stars as Franklin Webb in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” (Universal Pictures) of action scenes, daring escapes, fist fights, dinosaur wrestling matches and some graphic violence (a man gets torn apart, so be wary of bringing really young kids to this movie) as it builds into several crescendos. Just as you think there can’t possibly be more mayhem or another challenge, there is; not ad nauseum, but it’s enough to make you shellshocked. The bad guys want to use the behemoths for an evil purpose that involves weapons of destruction. All of the subterfuge, angst and cause célèbre animal rights activism is a ploy to whip the audience’s emotions into a frenzy. On some levels it works. But most astute viewers will understand that there is no moral theme of any consequence in this reptiles gone wild orgy. The relationship between Claire and Owen is fun, until they do stupid things like kissing in the middle of an action scene. The two leads have charisma and you like them regardless. Spall as Mills gives you a fitting antagonist to hate, and you hope he gets his just rewards. Ditto for Toby Jones who plays Mr. Eversol, a trafficker, and Ted Levine, as Ken Wheatley, the vile man who heads the rescue and misleads Claire. Smith provides some comic relief as Webb the nerd who hates to get his feet dirty.

And, Pineada shows spunk as the brainy and fearless Rodriguez. It’s obvious the dinosaurs aren’t real, but thanks to the special effects and photography, with a gigantic assist from the sound effects department (Marti Albert sound effects editor), your nerves will get frayed. You’ll jump out of your seat or sit with dread as you watch gnashing teeth bear down on human flesh. Also, a shout out to the vivid images of the volcano and the gorgeous shots of the island which perfectly set up the atmosphere for a verdant paradise gone wrong. The 128 minutes roll by and you’ll feel like you just got back from a tour of duty in the wartorn jungles of some tropical island nation. Your adrenalin will be high. Your thoughts will race. You will not feel like you just watched the most innovative action/adventure/sci-fi film in the world (“Avatar”), but you’ll have to admit that “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” worked its magic in its own way, even if its aura doesn’t have a longlasting effect. The writer of Hebrews expected them to grow up, learn the foundational truths, and be well on their way to maturity. But by their own choices, they’d quit. They were stymied, moving backwards on their spiritual journeys. Paul was both brokenhearted and angry at the many Corinthian Christians who had decided to remain spiritual babies: “Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly— mere infants in Christ. You can go to church and even pray and read your Bible, and he won’t mind. But the minute you wake up from your spiri-

tual lethargy, shake off the worldly mindset, and commit yourself to radical obedience to Jesus Christ, you will not only encounter spiritual opposition, but you will know that you have chewed meat. I tell you, as a believer you must move beyond the basics of the Christian faith and grow up in Christ. God’s plan is birth, growth, and maturity. The Word of God: It corrects, it convicts, it cleanses, it equips, and it confirms to us what the Lord has said. The days of coming to church and not understanding the Word is over. Why sit in church just to die on the vine? Grow up!

Making a Difference in Small But Significant Ways Deenabandhu Manchala Global Ministries Area Executive for Southern Asia In April I attended the Global Ministries’ gathering of anti-human trafficking activists in Kupang, Indonesia. A group of us went to the airport to join a community as they received the body of a man named Mingus as it was returned from Malaysia. The 40-year old was trafficked some ten years ago and worked in a palm oil plantation there. We were told that, on an average, six coffins of migrant workers or trafficked people arrive every day at different Indonesian airports. The same is true at many Asian airports from which hundreds leave every day in hope of better life. At the meeting we heard similar stories from many parts of Indonesia and Asia; stories of people who were trafficked for labor, prostitution, begging, even organs. These stories had some common features – the workers had no contracts, no clue about where they were, long working hours, wages less than promised or unpaid wages, inhumane living conditions, and experienced rape, torture, detention, deportation and death. According to a recent International Labour Organisation report, an estimated 24.9 million victims are trapped in modern-day slavery. Seventy-one percent of these are women and girls. This ghastly business earns billions of dollars in profit for traffickers as it thrives on the desperation of vulnerable people, made and kept poor and powerless. Furthermore, the UNHCR 2017 report alerts that an unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from home, and that nearly 20 people are forcibly displaced every minute as a result of conflict, persecution and poverty. With wars and war-mongers active as ever, unabated labor-sav-

ing industrial development, and global warming making many places unliveable, this trend of millions being pushed into dehumanisation will perhaps continue for decades. During our time in Kupang, we also visited some community farms initiated by the Protestant Church in West Timor (GMIT), a Global Ministries’ partner. Recognising that many from poor rural communities are migrating or falling prey to traffickers because their livelihoods are destroyed by industrial development, the church, through these community farms, offers them alternatives to migration. These farmlands, either donated by or leased from congregation members, are cultivated by the community, and 90 percent of the profits are made available for those in the congregation to borrow to start small income generation projects. We heard many stories of their impact. These small and local initiatives of churches might seem ineffective in challenging large scale human trafficking. But they have the capacity to make a difference by stopping at least a few from falling prey to traffickers. Through such initiatives the church, despite its minority status in a multi-religious context, is also making a statement that it has a distinct mandate, and that it can offer alternatives to ruthless, profit-obsessed, anti-people industrial development by returning to the vocation of nurturing the earth and staying in sync with its life-sustaining capacities. We are not called not only to denounce injustice and its manifestations, but also to announce alternatives to the dominant trends and discourse. And these begin small, as the mustard seed.

LOS ANGELES — June 18, 2018 — Cedars-Sinai Blood Donor Services is awarding a lifetime achievement award to longtime blood and platelet donor Haskell Anderson III. "I’m honored to be able to do this for people in need," says Anderson, who has donated platelets 200 times in the last 30 years. Anderson still remembers the first time he donated blood in the late 1980s. He was in a waiting room at Cedars-Sinai when an employee came by to recruit blood donors. "I had the time, so I did it," says Anderson. "When

I was there, I saw people donating platelets and from then on it became my thing." Platelets are tiny blood cells that help form clots and control bleeding. They are in constant demand because many patients, especially those receiving treatment for cancer, often need platelet transfusions several times a week. And while donating platelets is a time-consuming activity—up to 90 minutes per donation—a single donation can help three patients. In 2013, Anderson became a patient when he was diagnosed with a stage 1 meningioma brain tumor.

More information about the Keep Families Together Act of 2018: Keep Families Together: The bill promotes family unity by prohibiting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials from separating children from their parents, except in extraordinary circumstances. In these limited circumstances, separation could not occur unless parental rights have been terminated, a child welfare agency has issued a best interest determination, or the Port Director or the Chief Border Patrol agent of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have approved separation due to trafficking in-

dicators or other concerns of risk to the child. It requires an independent child welfare official to review any such separation and return the child if no harm to the child is present. It imposes financial penalties on officials who violate the prohibition on family separation. Limit Criminal Prosecutions for Asylum Seekers: The majority of the parents separated at the border are being criminally prosecuted for illegal entry or re-entry. This bill restricts the prosecution of parents who are asylum seekers by adopting the recommendation of the DHS Office of Inspector General. The bill delays prosecutions for asylum seekers and creates an affirmative defense for asylum seekers. It also codifies our commitment to the Refugee protocol prohibiting the criminal punishment of those seeking protection from persecution. Increase Child Welfare Training: The bill requires all CBP officers and agents to complete child welfare training on an annual basis. Port Directors and Chief Border Agents, those who are authorized to make decisions on family separations, must complete an additional 90 minutes of annual child-welfare training. Establish Public Policy Preference for Family Reunification: The bill establishes a preference for family unity, discourages the separation of siblings, and creates a presumption that detention is not in the best interests of families and children. Add Procedures for Separated Families: The bill requires DHS to develop policies and procedures allowing parents and children to locate each other and reunite if they have been separated. Such procedures must be public and made available in a language that parents can understand. In cases of separation, it requires DHS to provide parents with a weekly report containing information about a child, and weekly phone communication. Establish Other Required Measures: In order to inform Congressional oversight and promote public understanding of the use family separation, the bill requires a report on the separation of families every six months.

He had to undergo surgery at Cedars-Sinai to remove the tumor. In gratitude for his return to good health, Anderson decided to give back even more. In addition to being a lifesaving blood donor, Anderson also volunteers at A Place Called Home, a nonprofit youth center in South L.A., where he was recently named Mentor of the Year. Anderson will receive the Blood Donor Lifetime Achievement Award during a celebratory dinner on Wednesday, June 20, at Cedars-Sinai.

Coalition of National Civil Rights Leaders Condemn NFL’s Censorship of Peaceful Protest During the National Anthem Local/National News WASHINGTON -- Today, a broad coalition of leaders of national civil rights organizations released a letter to the National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell objecting to the NFL’s new rule censoring players’ peaceful protests during the national anthem of police violence against unarmed African Americans and other people of color. When players take a knee during the national anthem, they seek to raise awareness of police brutality and violence routinely perpetrated upon unarmed and nonviolent people of color. 63% of unarmed people killed by the police are people of color; police are twice as likely to kill unarmed African Americans as white Americans. Racially biased policing undermines our criminal justice system. Protesters striving to create a more inclusive democracy define the history of this country; there is no better way to honor our national symbols than to fight for equal justice for all. Racial disparities within the NFL’s leadership make this recent decision even more appalling. 70% of NFL players are black, yet 75% of head coaches and 100% of team CEOs and Presidents are white men. No team has a majority owner that is African American or Hispanic. Compelling players to stand during the national anthem erodes the values the flag represents and tells the world that the NFL does not care about racial justice.

When the people who are tricked into buying these cheap, junk plans need their health insurance to cover their medical care, they’ll realize they’ve been swindled out of their money with no comprehensive health coverage to show for it. “Association health plans are also difficult for regulators to oversee and protect consumers against. As a result, this final rule also is likely to pave the way for unscrupulous insurance companies to target small businesses, the self-employed, and freelancers by selling them very low-cost health plans that actually will not cover their medical claims. Moreover, even legitimate association plans, who follow the letter of these new rules, will weaken important consumer protections by offering junk plans that don’t cover many essential health benefits or charge discriminatory prices. “We are disappointed that the Trump administration is once again attacking the very consumer protections that ensure the availability of comprehensive, affordable insurance for every family in our nation. June 19 (UPI) -- Starbucks announced Tuesday it plans to close 150 underperforming stores in the 2019 fiscal year. The company will triple its traditional annual average of closing about 50 stores as part of a streamlining effort including rapidly optimizing its U.S. store portfolio. "While certain demand headwinds are transitory, and some of our cost increases are appropriate investments for the future, our recent performance does not reflect the potential of our exceptional brand and is not acceptable," Starbucks President and CEO Kevin Johnson said.

In July 2017, Starbucks closed all 379 Teavana locations after the tea shop showed poor sales and little hope of improving. "Over the past year we have taken several actions to streamline the company, positioning us to increase our innovation agility as an organization and enhance focus on our core value drivers which serve as the foundation to re-accelerate growth and create longterm shareholder value," Johnson said. Starbucks also told investors it expects same-store sales to grow 1 percent globally in the third quarter of 2018.

original purchase. Mr. Beal was a builder and improved his land and was one of the leading horticulturists. Mr. Beal was honored this year at a Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the

abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved blacks throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. Its name is a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth", the date of its celebration. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states.
