Cameron Boyce The world is mourning the loss of Disneystar Cameron Boyce who passed away Saturday due to an ongoing medical condition. Boyce, 20, who starred in Disney’s Descendants franchise, was found unresponsive at his home and could not be revived by paramedics. Boyce grew up in front of the camera making his big screen debut in the 2009 horror film Mirrors. He rose to fame as the character of Luke Ross on Disney’s tv show “Jessie.” His “Jessie” co-star Skai Jackson remembered him on Twitter. She wrote: “I don’t even know where to start… I am at a loss for words. I never thought in a million years I

Union Votes to Authorize Possible Strike Against Grocery Companies By City News Service

Raising the threat of the first Southland grocery strike in nearly 16 years, unionized grocery workers overwhelmingly authorized its union to call for a work stoppage unless a contract agreement can be reached, union officials announced. “Southern California grocery workers voted in large numbers, and overwhelmingly rejected the unfair terms that have been proposed by Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons,” said John Grant,

president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770. The voting was conducted Monday and Tuesday, Grant said. Exact tallies of the vote were not immediately released. Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions issued a statement saying, “The outcome of the strike authorization vote does not change anything related to this process. We remain committed to negotiating a contract that is fair to all parties, including our employees, and will continue to

work to achieve that.” Ralphs issued a similar statement and said, for now, “it is business as usual in Ralphs stores.” The strike authorization vote means union negotiators have the power to call for a strike, if deemed necessary, but it does not automatically mean a walkout will occur. Grant said the union plans to meet Thursday with picket captains to discuss “various forms of economic protest” to oppose the failure of negotiations and to try to “get these companies back on the right path to provide a fair contract.” The job actions could include asking customers to boycott stores, Grant said. Meetings are pending next week involving the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor to discuss authorizations for the member unions to honor possible picket lines, Grant said. The next bargaining sessions involving the union and the companies are scheduled for July

10, 11, and 12, Grant said. The contract between the union and the companies expired in March. That pact was approved by workers in 2016 and included annual raises for most workers, along with increased pay for entry-level cashiers and concessions on holiday pay and retirement age, union officials said at the time. On Wednesday, union officials said the most recent contract offer made by the grocery companies included wage increases of less than 1 percent and nearly 25 percent cuts in cashier wages. The labor dispute raises fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. That work stoppage was estimated by some analysts to have cost the supermarket chains as much as $2 billion, with locked-out workers losing $300 million in wages. Federal grand jury reportedly investigating GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy By ASSOCIATED PRESS A federal grand jury in New York is investigating top Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy, examining whether he used his position as vice chair of President Trump's inaugural committee to drum up business deals with foreign leaders, according to documents obtained by the Associated Press and people familiar with the matter. A wide-ranging subpoena the U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn recently sent to Trump's inaugural committee seeks records relating to 20 individuals and businesses. All have connections to Broidy, his investment and defense contracting firms, and foreign officials he pursued deals with — including the current president of Angola and two politicians in Romania. Prosecutors appear to be investigating whether Broidy exploited his access to Trump for personal gain and violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which makes it illegal for U.S. citizens to offer foreign officials "anything of value" to gain a business advantage. Things of value in this case could have been an invitation to the January 2017 inaugural events or access to Trump. A statement released to the AP by Broidy's attorneys said that at no point did Broidy or his global security firm Circinus have a contract or exchange of money with "any Romanian government agency, proxy or agent." It also said that while Circinus did reach an agreement with Angola in 2016 there was no connection whatsoever to the inauguration or Broidy's role on the inaugural committee. Any implication to the contrary is completely false," the statement said. The Brooklyn probe appears to be distinct from an inquiry by Manhattan federal prosecutors into the inaugural committee's record $107-million fundraising and whether foreigners unlawfully contributed. The people spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation. Broidy, a 61-year-old Los Angeles businessman, made a fortune in investments before moving into defense contracting and has played prominent roles in GOP fundraising, including as finance chairman of the Republican National Committee from 2006 to 2008 and vice chair of the Trump Victory Committee in 2016. But there have been problems along the way. In 2009, investigators looked into the New York state pension fund's decision to invest $250 million with Broidy and found he had plied state officials with nearly $1 million in illegal gifts. Broidy pleaded guilty to a felony but it was later knocked down to a misdemeanor after he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and pay back $18 million in management fees.

CY-FAIR – Within a whirlwind of 24 hours, Cy-Fair ISD graduate Taylor Powers met actors Tina Fey, Rose Byrn and designer Zac Posen. The young photographer was treated like a celebrity herself at Carnegie Hall as one of eight, $10,000 art portfolio recipients awarded by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards through the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artist & Writers. The Cypress Woods High School student traveled to New York this June with her family and photography teacher Tina Fox for the prestigious national awards ceremony. This year Scholastic recognized 800 teen Gold Medalists selected from more than 340,000 national entries from young artists and writers in grades 7-12. Locally, Taylor’s portfolio was chosen last winter by a panel of art professionals from Harris County Department of Education, regional affiliate of the Awards. “New York City was like a fairytale to me,” said the 18-yearold. From visiting the Today Show and seeing the Jonas Brothers to getting lost on the subway and experiencing Times Square, the experience mimicked a movie, a dream come true, she said. Backstage at Carnegie Hall, visiting celebrities greeted the top-award students. Tina Fey posed for a personal photo with Powers, and the Saturday Night Live star even complimented the teen on her dress. “I was smiling so hard that I could barely get out the words “thank you’,” she said. Photography teacher Fox has been an art teacher for almost 30 years and has been involved with HCDE’s regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for 27 years.

Through the validation and recognition students gain from Scholastic, she sees student confidence rise. As Powers began working on her senior photography portfolio this year, her teacher knew it was unique and powerful as she created the body of images. “This is the first time I’ve had a student receive this type of award,” she said. “I know this award has opened opportunities for her that she otherwise might not have had.” HCDE Scholastic Art & Writing Coordinator Andrea Segraves sees the power of expression that Scholastic Art & Writing Awards lends to young student artists and writers as they gain notoriety for their artistic talents. “The Awards have identified and honored so many talented writers and artists over the years like Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Lena Dunham and Ken Burns,” said Segraves. “To join in those ranks is such an empowerment for these teens.” Powers’ future career plans include attending community college until she hears back from the esteemed Savannah College of Art and Design, her dream college. “I hope to be able to commission art pieces for clients one day and do photo shoots for anybody seeking a photographer with a keen eye,” she said. She is quick to credit her teacher for encouraging and pushing her artistic endeavors while thanking Mom Letitia for influencing her creativity and buying the digital camera to help her forge her artistic pathway. There were many transformative criminal justice reform bills lawmakers filed and pushed this session. Bail reform, the Sandra Bland Act, the TDCJ Independent Ombudsman and Raise the Age are some of the few pieces of legislation that were proposed, but never had a chance with Republicans in charge. But, one bill was able to get out, I authored Senate Bill 1746, which will help kids with incarcerated parents stay on track to graduate from high school. According to a research study conducted by the University of Texas at San Antonio, about one in twenty-eight children has a parent in prison. Students with incarcerated parents are at a much higher risk of suffering through academic difficulties. Also, these students are at risk of developmental challenges such as poor diet and sleep; some students have difficulty in staying focused in school. This, in turn, puts them at risk of dropping out of school. Education Code requires school districts to provide accelerated instruction to students who are at-risk of dropping out of school. Currently, the TEA classifies a student being at-risk from a list of 13 indicators. Indicators on the list include the student being

homeless, pregnant or a parent or if the student has a limited English proficiency. The governor signed SB 1746, which adds students with incarcerated parents or guardians to the list of at-risk indicators. Now, these students will qualify for certain benefits other at-risk students currently receive which will help them graduate from high school. These benefits include programs like supportive guidance, enrichment activities, academic enhancement and support services, college and career awareness, and much more. There are organizations that have stepped up to offer intervention services and programs to help at-risk youth. I am proud to do my part by passing this legislation to help kids in our community and Texas. The school to prison pipeline disproportionately targets minority students from our neighborhoods. It introduces them to the criminal justice system at a very young age, and once in, it’s hard to get out. This bill will not dismantle the pipeline, but it removes a path to it. Veterans Receive Job Assistance In Riverside County Community News The County of Riverside has been awarded $488,635 in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds to support the Riverside County Veterans’ Employment-Related Assistance Program (RivCoVEAP), which will be provided to eligible applicants between July 1, 2019, and March 31, 2021. “As a Navy veteran, I know it can be tough to adjust to life after military service,” said Supervisor Chuck Washington, a former Navy officer and aviator. “These funds will help us facilitate the transition to civilian life for 100 deserving veterans, benefitting employers and workers alike and strengthening our community.” The program, which is being administered by the County’s Economic Development Agency (EDA) and the County’s Workforce Development Board,

will serve 100 veterans and eligible spouses in various categories, including service members who were recently separated, disabled veterans, War on Terror campaign veterans, Gulf War II-era veterans, and veterans with significant barriers. The County anticipates that many RivCoVEAP recipients will intersect one or more of the priority groups listed. UC Riverside scientists have decoded the genome of blackeyed peas, offering hope for feeding Earth’s expanding population, especially as the climate changes. Understanding the genes responsible for the peas’ drought and heat tolerance eventually could help make other crops tougher too. Black-eyed peas, small beans with dark midsections, have been a global dietary staple for centuries due to their environmental toughness and exceptional nutritional qualities such as high protein and low fat. In sub-Saharan Africa they remain the number one source of protein in the human diet. A genome is the full collection of genetic codes that determine characteristics like color, height, and predisposition to diseases. All genomes contain highly repetitive sequences of DNA that UCR Professor of Computer Science and project co-leader Stefano Lonardi likens to “hundreds of thousands of

identical jigsaw puzzle pieces.” To figure out how the jigsaw puzzle sequences fit together, Lonardi’s team assembled the genome many times with different software tools and parameters. Then they created new software capable of merging these various genome solutions into a single, complete picture. With the success of this project, the black-eyed pea joins only a handful of other major crops whose genomes have been fully sequenced. The team’s work on the project was published in the June issue of The Plant Journal, where it was featured as the cover story, and Lonardi’s free software can be downloaded online. This is the first high-quality reference genome for the cowpea. Work on it began three years ago, made possible mainly by a $1.6 million grant from the National Science Foundation, or NSF. An additional $500,000 NSF grant also supported the computational efforts. As with humans, there are differences between individual cowpeas. Knowing which genes are responsible for qualities in individuals such as color, size, or drought resistance will help breeders develop new varieties (continued in next 2 columns)

Like the rest of the state, employment growth in the Inland Empire has slowed, although wage gains continue – and have fueled increases in nearly every local spending category from restaurants and hotels to business and industry, according to an analysis released today by the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development. From May 2018 to May 2019, nonfarm employment in the Inland Empire increased a moderate 1.7%, about on par with the state as a whole. Last year, the region had been posting significantly higher levels of growth and regularly outpaced the state in employment gains. The slowdown can also be seen in the region’s labor force, which grew by just 2,000, or 0.1%, over this same one-year period. Despite the slowing in employment, wages in the Inland Empire have continued to increase, although at a more modest pace than in the state. Earnings in the region grew 2.6% from 2017 to 2018 (the latest data available) while they jumped 4.1% in California as a whole. Wage growth has triggered greater consumer and business spending both locally and across the state. Taxable sales in the Inland Empire increased 7.8%

from the first quarter of 2018 to the first quarter of 2019, compared to 8.3% in California. Although spending in the region has increased across nearly all categories, business and industry sales tax receipts are leading the way with a 5.4% pace of growth. The rock bands Soundgarden and Hole, country-rock singersongwriter Steve Earle and the estates of rapper Tupac Shakur and rocker Tom Petty are among those suing Universal Music Group over the fire in its Los

Angeles vaults that allegedly destroyed master recordings made by those and other artists. It is the first legal action taken since a June 11 New York Times Magazine article noted that a fire on June 1, 2008 destroyed thousands of archived recordings dating back to the 1940s and including such iconic artists as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby and Judy Garland and rock-era performers such as Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, (continued in next 2 columns)

Senator Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) Senator Steven Glazer (D-Contra Costa) In April 1992, violent riots broke out in Los Angeles after an almost all-White jury (one juror later “came out” as biracial 10 years later) handed down a not guilty verdict in the case of Rodney King, an African-American man who four LAPD police officers tasered, subdued and beat severely with batons. During the unrest that followed, low-boiling tensions between AfricanAmerican residents in the neighborhood and immigrant Korean business owners heated up to an explosive six-day period of burning, looting and killings that left more than 50 people dead, about 1,000 more injured and over a $1 billion in property damages, mostly to the local Korean-owned businesses. Although both groups existed side-by-side in the same community with only little dustups here and there, it took a flash of anger to expose long-harbored frustration and deeply-rooted cross-cultural intolerance. In 2014, President Obama commissioned the Presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing after police officers shot and killed an Afican-American teenager, Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri. One of the recommendations the group made to the nearly 18,000 police departments across the country is that they add multicultural history lessons to the training of law enforcement officers. Supporters of ethnic studies in California’s public schools and universities agree. They say when people learn about other cultures, they become more open-minded, empathetic and tolerant - and communities become more enriched socially and otherwise by this. That’s why a group of lawmakers, academics, students and activists – some who have been working to make Ethnic Studies a college-level requirement in California for more than 50 years - are rallying to support a bill making its way through the legislature, AB 1460. If passed, the proposal would

require that the approximately 481,000 students enrolled in all 23 California State University (CSU) campuses take one 3-credit unit of any qualifying Ethnic Studies course before they graduate. “The times in which we live make the call for an ethnic studies requirement all the more urgent. There is much discussion about hate speech, but what we are witnessing is much more than a matter of emotion and rhetoric. What we are witnessing and experiencing is White supremacy in terms of policy and violence,” said Melina Abdullah, Chair of the Pan African Studies Department at California State University Los Angeles. “Hate crimes are soaring. As educators, as ones invested in teaching our state to think critically, we have a role in turning the tide. We know ethnic studies to be part of the solution.” On June 26, Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), who authored and sponsored AB 1460, testified during a hearing on the bill before the Senate Education Committee at the State Capitol. “Ethnic Studies has a demonstrated benefit for all students - students of color and White students,” said Weber, who is African American. She is also the Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus and a former professor at San Diego State University, where she taught for 40 years and helped to set up the Africana Studies Department. “Regardless of major, students who took Ethnic Studies courses graduated at a much higher rate than their peers in their major who did not take Ethnic Studies classes,” added Weber. “Ethnic Studies enable students to succeed academically, professionally, and socially, resulting in them making valuable contributions to the community, the country and our democracy.” Since introducing AB 1460, Weber has gained the support of a wide range of Californians, including student groups, CSU professors and several of her (continued in next 2 columns)

But during the Senate Education Committee hearing on AB 1460, two Democratic senators, Richard Pan (DSacramento) and Steven Glazer (D-Contra Costa) stated that they support the goals and the idea of Ethnic studies in higher public education - but they both stepped back from voting for the bill. Their indecision led the committee to table the bill, which is expected to be heard again as early as next week. For Pan, he’s hesitating, the lawmaker told Weber, because he does not want to legislate making Ethnic Studies a requirement since a task force commissioned by CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White already made that recommendation in 2016 for schools across the CSU system. A year later, White issued an executive order telling CSU schools to adapt it. Weber says many of the Academic Senates at CSU schools have yet to implement White’s guidance. That is why, Weber said, she resorted to introducing statewide legislation to ensure that students receive a cross-cultural understanding of the four main ethnic groups – Native Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans and Asian Americans - who call California home. “I have tremendous reluctance to have curricula dictated by the legislature,” said Pan, in whose district Blacks, Latinos, Asians, Pacific Islanders and other minorities make up more than 60 percent of the population. “We should let the faculty take the lead on this.” Like Pan, Glazer says mandating by law that schools require Ethnic Studies could be the beginning of a “slippery slope.” “There is a potential in the future that the folks that are up here could be people with a different philosophical view than us,” he said. Glazer, whose district is just under 50 percent minority, says he’s worried about setting a precedent that others could misuse later. Other senators disagree with Pan and Glazer. ”True reform does not occur without bold leaders decidedly challenging the status quo. It is time to ensure that professionals

trained in the nation’s most diverse higher education system are exposed to an inclusive and multiethnic curriculum,” says Senator Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles), who is African American and supports the bill. Senator Steven Bradford (DLos Angeles), who is also African American, says every year the California State Legislature recognizes June 19th as “Juneteenth Independence Day,” when the last slaves in the United Sates were freed. But that history, he points out, is not taught in the state’s public schools. “We owe it to our students to provide a liberating education process that accurately reflects their history,” says Bradford, “which is why AB 1460 requiring ethnic studies in the California State University System is critically important.” Ethnic studies in the United States began in the CSU system at San Francisco State University a little over 50 years ago on March 20, 1969 after students there held the longest strike in the history of the country, calling for more diversity in the school’s curriculum. Today, 22 out of the 23 CSU schools have some level of Ethnic Studies course integration in their curricula. CSU is the most ethnically and racially diverse university system in the nation with minorities making up about 74 percent of the student population. Weber says she has worked on requiring Ethnic Studies at CSU for the 7 years she’s been in the legislature and her entire adult life before that. During that time, Weber says she has heard the reasons Pan and Glazer are giving for their pushback, among many other explanations. Yet, she does not plan to give up or pull back. “I’ve been in the Ivory Tower and tried to paint it multiple colors,” said Weber. “It did not happen. We complain about the hatred in California. We complain about the lack of information people have. We complain about students not being challenged to think differently. We have to look at this not as a Black and brown thing. 5,714 aftershocks hit Southern California since Thursday’s earthquake CALIFORNIA by: Erica Pieschke SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Thousands of aftershocks have rattled Southern California since the 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck on July 4. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there have been 5,714 aftershocks recorded. These aftershocks hit greater than 2.0 magnitude within about 30 miles from the epicenter of the first quake. It all started at 10:33 a.m. on Thursday when a 6.4 magnitude quake struck the Mojave Desert near the town of Ridgecrest. The next morning, a magnitude 5.4 aftershock

rattled at 4:07 a.m. near the epicenter. But it didn’t stop there. That night, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rattled the same region around 8:20 p.m. This quake was the strongest in 20 years to hit Southern California. Governor Newsom has since declared a state of emergency due to the damages caused to infrastructure and homes. These earthquakes have been a wake-up call, especially for those in the Bay Area, to ensure that they are prepared for when another one strikes.

A Covered California analysis projects that an estimated 922,000 consumers will be eligible for the new state subsidy program that will help lower the cost of their coverage in 2020. The consumers who are projected to benefit from the new state subsidies are: An estimated 235,000 middleincome Californians who previously did not qualify for financial help because they exceeded federal income requirements. They will be eligible to receive an average of $172 per household per month, which will help them save an average of 23 percent off their current premiums. Many of these consumers, particularly those who live in high-cost regions, will see significant savings with annual reductions in their health care premiums in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars. An estimated 663,000 Covered California enrollees who currently receive federal financial help. They will be eligible to receive an average of an additional $15 per household per month which will help them save an average of 5 percent on their current premiums. An estimated 23,000 Covered California enrollees whose annual household income falls below 138 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL), which is less than $17,237 for an individual and $35,535 for a family of four. They will see their premiums for the benchmark plan lowered to $1 per

member, per month. “California is addressing affordability by helping the lowest-income individuals as well as those currently paying extraordinary amounts of money towards premiums each month,” said California Health and Human Services Secretary and Covered California Board Chair, Dr. Mark Ghaly. “Providing this critical assistance means fewer people without insurance and lower health care costs for everybody.” “For many Californians, this new financial help will allow them to expand their businesses, hire staff, purchase new equipment and continue pursuing their dreams,” Lee said. The new state subsidies will only be available through Covered California. The amount of financial help consumers receive will vary depending on their age, their annual household income and the cost of health care in their region. The program will limit how much any Californian will pay for their premium as a percentage of their income. For example, older individuals living in regions with high health care costs could receive significant amounts of financial help, while some younger consumers in lower-cost regions may already be able to purchase a benchmark plan for less than the share of income spent on premiums that is capped by the program. Managing Asthma Amid the Summer Heat and Dips in Air Quality by Mike Iorfino

For the millions of Americans with asthma, summer heat waves and stifling humidity can trigger flare-ups and lead to emergency department visits. The weather conditions also can contribute to higher levels of air pollution, such as groundlevel ozone – the primary ingredient in smog – which forms most often in summer months, on days with clear skies and low winds. Exposure to high levels of ozone is particularly harmful for people with asthma, as it causes muscles in the airways to constrict, making it more difficult – and even painful – to take a deep breath. “For people with asthma, even short-term exposure to air pollutants can exacerbate symptoms,” said Michael Phillips, MD, a professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care at Penn Medicine, who noted that there’s usually a significant uptick in asthma-related emergency department visits on days with poor air quality. More than 25 million Americans have asthma, a chronic condition in which one’s airways narrow and swell, and produce extra mucus. While the severity and frequency of the symptoms vary from person to person, the condition often causes periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. Severe asthma attacks can be life-threatening, and the

condition accounts for more than 1.6 million emergency department visits each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For some people, the signs and flare-ups emerge after exercise, or following exposure to workplace irritants, like gases or chemical fumes, or allergens such as pollen and mold. In the summer, elevated temperatures and high humidity can trigger symptoms. In fact, researchers found that exposure to extreme heat and precipitation participation, particularly in the summer, is linked to an increased risk of hospitalizations from asthma. Navigating Poor Air Quality – Particularly in Philadelphia While no cure exists, effective treatment plans can help patients better manage their condition and prevent complications. However, a variety of factors, like increased exposure to poor air quality, can make life more challenging for people with asthma. Air pollution affects communities nationwide, though the severity of pollution varies region-to-region. Philadelphia County, for example, received a “B” for particle pollution and an “F” for high ozone days, according to the 2019 “State of the Air” report recently released by the American Lung Association. Restoring the individual mandate was a key factor in driving premiums between 2 and 5 percent lower per carrier, with an average of 3.2 percent. Covered California estimates the reduced rates will mean Californians will save an average of $14 per month, or $167 per year, on their health care premiums in 2020. “The winners of making coverage more affordable and once again requiring consumers to be insured are all 2.2 million people in the state’s individual market and all Californians who benefit from having more of their friends, family and neighbors insured,” Lee said. The state mandate will be administered by the California Franchise Tax Board. People who choose to go without coverage they can afford in 2020 will be subject to paying the penalty as part of their annual state tax filing. Consumers whose health insurance costs do not exceed a certain percentage of their income could face a penalty of up to nearly $2,100 per family, which is based on 2.5 percent of household income or a minimum of $695 per adult, whichever is greater. Consumers who do not have health insurance will be able to begin signing up for 2020 coverage in the fall. Others with special qualifying life events, like losing their coverage or moving, can enroll year-round. Medi-Cal enrollment is also year-round. AKC Reunite Helps Displaced Pets in Wake of CA Earthquakes Local/National News

In response to the devastating natural disaster, AKC Reunite has made donations to shelters in the area that are accepting displaced pets. On Monday, July 8th, AKC Reunite made a $2,500 donation along with a ProKit, containing 75 microchips and a microchip scanner, to assist Ridgecrest Animal Shelter’s efforts providing lost pets with safe refuge and care while their families assess the damage to their homes. AKC Reunite also made a $5,000 donation to Almost Eden Pet Rescue on Tuesday, July 9th. Almost Eden is helping with an influx of pets, most of them displaced from the Ridgecrest earthquakes. This donation will

help Almost Eden rebuild and expand their emergency sheltering areas and acquire the cleaning supplies they desperately need. Many other community organizations are assisting the shelters as well. It is a team effort as these communities pull together in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.1 earthquake. Man Pretends to Be Black While in Court Facing Road Rage Charges Local/National News

Mark Char Oahu, HI — Mark Char, a man from Hawaii who was charged with attempted murder and assault for a road rage incident in 2016, appeared in court wearing blackface as he was claiming that the justice system was unfair to him. “Now this kangaroo court is trying to give me a life sentence for me trying to protect and defend myself against the attack from three guys — in essence, treating me like a Black man,” Char reportedly ranted as his face was covered with Black permanent marker that he painted before the sentencing hearing. “So today, I’m going to be a Black man.” Three years ago, during a road rage confrontation, Char reportedly stabbed three men wherein one was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after being stabbed five times. Char, however, claimed that the attack was an act of self-defense. According to reports, Char

managed to get a marker without the Halawa prison officials knowing. When guards saw his face covered in black, they ordered him to wash it off but he refused. This continues a pattern of disruptive behavior designed to undermine the administration of justice,” said the presiding judge, Todd Eddins. Char was allegedly hostile to Eddins as well as his legal team throughout his conviction Ultimately, Char was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the attempted murder conviction. He will also be facing charges for disobeying Halawa prison guards. “What you need to do is look in the mirror,” Eddins told Char. “And if you look in the mirror, Mr. Char, you’re not gonna see a Black person. You’re gonna see a menace. You’re gonna see a menace to society.”

Managing Asthma Amid the Summer Heat and Dips in Air Quality...continued from page 4 in northeastern Pennsylvania, both received a “B” for ozone. The report, which pulled data from air quality monitors from 2015 to 2017, focused on ozone and particle pollution, the two most common and harmful types of air pollution. From 2015 to 2017, there were 31 “code orange” ozone alerts issued in Philadelphia County, meaning the air quality index had reached “unhealthy levels for sensitive groups,” including people with respiratory problems, like asthma. When compared to cities across the nation, Philadelphia didn’t fare much better. On the most polluted cities list, the Philadelphia-ReadingCamden metropolitan area ranked No. 21 out of 228 areas for high ozone days, and No. 18 out of 203 for annual particle pollution. Steps to Better Asthma Control The report’s findings underscore the need for patients in this region to adhere to a comprehensive treatment approach, which includes routinely tracking symptoms and monitoring whether they need to adjust medication, said Patricia Takach, MD, interim chief of the section of Allergy and Immunology at Penn Medicine. For example, patients should track how often they experience disturbed sleep caused by shortness of breath, as well as any triggers they may notice, such as post-exercise symptoms. Patients use two main types of medications to treat asthma. Long-term control medications, such as inhaled corticosteroids, are preventive medications used on a daily basis to treat airway inflammation and reduce flareups. Quick-relief inhalers, or rescue inhalers, contain fastacting medication and are used as needed to quickly open airways. asthma Takach no

If they are using it more than a doctor recommends – often no more than twice a week – it means their asthma is not under control, and they should discuss adjusting the long-term preventive treatment. To better manage their condition, every patient with asthma should work with their primary care provider or allergist to develop a personalized asthma action plan, Takach said. The action plan, or worksheet, is split into three categories – doing well, caution, and get help now – and outlines a variety of information, including past triggers and when and how much medication patients should take when they experience certain symptoms. The worksheet also enables patients to track their lung function by examining how new readings – taken by a hand-held device, called a peak flow meter – compare to their best measurement. “The asthma action plan is a critical resource that allows patients to identify when their asthma symptoms are increasing, and what they need to do to treat it,” Takach said. Patients who experience worsening symptoms during the summer should connect with their doctor or specialist at least once a month – whether in-person or via the patient portal, said Takach. She advises patients to carry their rescue inhalers at all times, and to make sure it’s not expired. Similarly, she recommends patients who use maintenance inhalers get a new one two weeks before their current one expires, so there isn’t a gap in treatment. She encourages patients to be aware of the local outdoor air quality – whether it’s via the Weather app on their phone or online at AirNow.gov – and, if it’s bad, advises them to limit prolonged exposure.

It also sought records related to George Nader, a Broidy associate who served as an advisor to the United Arab Emirates, provided grand jury testimony to special counsel Robert Mueller and was recently jailed on federal child pornography charges. Several of the names included in the subpoena also appeared in a cache of leaked emails anonymously distributed last year to several news organizations, including the AP. Broidy has contended the emails were hacked from his account, and that several of the documents were altered or forged. His attorneys declined to specify to the AP which emails they believed were doctored. As provided to the AP, the emails show Broidy invited two Angolan leaders named in the subpoena to Trump's inaugural, and that the invitation was accompanied by a multimilliondollar contract for Circinus to provide security services in Angola that Broidy asked be signed ahead of the events. In a follow-up note to one of the Angolans — then-Defense Minister and current President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço — Broidy discussed a planned visit to Trump's Mar-aLago resort in Florida, and in the same correspondence demanded a past-due payment for Circinus' services. of the Word. But Psalm 1 tells us that we should make God’s Word our delight and meditate on it consistently – day and night. I pray that through the teaching of this message today that if you are not regularly reading and studying the Word of God you will began to make God’s Word a regular diet for your life. For He says, “Consider the sower who went out to sow. As he was sowing some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on rocky ground, where there wasn’t much soil, and they sprang up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep. But when the sun came up they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them. Still others fell on good ground and produced a crop: some 100, some 60, and some 30 times what was sown. He who has an ear, let him hear [Matthew 13:3-9]. And as you read through this, think about which type of soil you relate to and how receptive you are to hearing the truth of the gospel. Vibrant and Wonderfully Alive Kimi Floyd Reisch, MDiv. Program Minister for the Open and Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ June is Open and Affirming month in many of our churches and Pride month in many of our communities. (Both are recognized at other times in some places.) For those of us who are transgender, non-binary, twospirit, intersex, asexual, bisexual, lesbian, gay, or queer, it is a chance to stand up and declare that we are still vibrantly and wonderfully alive, that we are beloved to God. Romans 12 reminds us that we are not to conform to the patterns of the world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, to remain joyful in hope. Refusing to conform to the status quo led Marsha P. Johnson to throw a shot glass at the mirror behind the bar at the Stonewall Inn after being harassed (again) by the police for nothing more than being a black drag queen experiencing homelessness. Like others, Johnson lived at the intersection of race, gender, and poverty. Johnson believed that something better was possible, and her willingness to fight for that envisioned world continues to lead and inspire. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall protests, and New York will recognize them in conjunction with World Pride. Yet, focusing only on Stonewall forgets that it was only one of many places where people have resisted, just like the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge was only one action in the Civil Rights movement. Policies that seek to erase queer people from public life and public records still make the news, and transgender people remain centered fighting for justice. In the Americas, the average life expectancy for a black transgender woman is between 30

and 35 years. Dallas has lost three women in the past few weeks. Ninety-two percent of two-spirit Native Americans report being bullied so badly in school that they experience lifelong psychological distress. But each person who identifies with one of the initials is more than just a statistic. We are living full lives and we are serving our faith communities. Some cultures believe gender and sexuality are attributes of the soul, not the body. In those places, accepting LGBTQIA+ people into our secular and spiritual spaces is not a new thing, but a reclaimed truth. Those of us called to dedicate our lives to this enduring fight of reclamation know how easy it is to get discouraged. That is why Open and Affirming Sunday is important—both in churches that are ONA and those that are just now feeling the Spirit lead them toward full affirmation. We need to feel ourselves being lifted up on the shoulders of those who came before as we massage the shoulders of those who will come after. We need to feel the strength of our faith communities behind us. This year, celebrate by reclaiming stories of resistance in your own communities. Open and Affirming Sunday is meant to be a joyful celebration of the wonderful of the love and diversity that is creation. Love rebuilds hope.

Who Can Beat Donald Trump? Every senator looks in the mirror and sees a future president. But these days, for Democrats at least, it’s not just members of Capitol Hill’s upper chamber who are picturing themselves sitting in the Oval Office. Congressmen, governors, mayors, even people who hold no elected office — men and women at seemingly every rung of the political ladder, including no rung at all — are suddenly eyeing the White House. For this, Democrats can thank (or blame) Donald Trump. His election in 2016 showed that the barriers to entry to the White House weren’t nearly as formidable as political professionals once assumed. More important, Mr. Trump at the moment seems eminently beatable, with an approval rating hovering just south of 40 percent. No other president in the era of approval polling (going back to the 1930s) has been this unpopular at this point in his presidency. A result is that the Democratic presidential field in 2020, maybe indeed, a recent informal survey of Democratic strategists produced a list of more than 30 fellow party members who are — or who, in the minds of these insiders, should be — thinking about running for president in 2020. Although Democrats are united in their opposition to President Trump, the fundamental party cleavage runs between populists and centrists. The Democratic presidential nominee in 2020 will be the person who either finds a way to appeal to both wings or, just as likely, divines which wings represent the greater number of primary voters. Following is a guide to some of the potential candidates — and the political bets they’ll be making. A recent poll put Bernie Sanders’s approval rating at 75 percent, which makes him the most popular politician in America. He’s the standard-bearer for the populist left whose “Medicare for All” bill, while still a liberal pipe dream, now seems as much of a litmus test for ambitious national Democrats as abortion rights. He will also be 79 years old on Election Day 2020. Joe Biden, a son of Scranton, Pa., appeals to the same workingclass white voters who flocked to Mr. Trump in 2016. Some progressives no doubt look upon him fondly from his days as Barack Obama’s vice president. But Mr. Biden’s three-decadeslong centrist Senate record, from his handling of Clarence Thomas’ confirmation hearing in 1991 to his vote for the 2005 bankruptcy bill, might make him a tough sell to today’s Democratic primary voters. And he’ll turn 78 in

The 20 plus Democratic candidates for the 2020 Presidential election November 2020. If she really runs, Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts senator, would instantaneously be the Democrats’ putative frontrunner. Her anti-corporate agenda has made her a fund-raising powerhouse, and she seems to have found an ideological sweet spot between the centrist Clinton and populist Sanders factions. Additionally, thanks to the “Nevertheless she persisted” meme, she’s become a feminist heroine. Ms. Warren, who’ll be 71 in 2020. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio senator, hails from a crucial swing state and has strong labor backing. He’s never seemed interested in a presidential run — until now. A finalist in the 2016 Democratic veepstakes, he would be formidable in Rust Belt states. His politics match the mood, and while he might not have the raw talent of Senator Warren, he’d be a strong Plan B. And if the populist wing is looking for a Plan C, Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon humbly suggests himself. He was the only senator to endorse Mr. Sanders in 2016, has been spending a fair amount of time in Iowa of late, and has become the go-to guy on Capitol Hill for liberal groups like MoveOn. Mr. Corey Booker, a New Jersey senator, has seemingly been running for president since he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford in the ’90s. But some of the wellheeled backers he picked up along the way — including Big Pharma and Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump — are now political poison in a Democratic primary. He may end up spending as much time distancing himself from his old supporters as cultivating new ones. Kamala Harris, a freshman California senator, has become a liberal rock star with her tough questioning of Jeff Sessions and

other Trump administration officials during Senate hearings. It’s her record as California attorney general, her previous job, that could trip her up: She declined to prosecute OneWest, the bank once headed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, for alleged foreclosure violations. Still, Ms. Harris seems the most promising of this group — not least because she has less of a voting record her opponents can use against her. The difficult choice facing Democratic primary voters looks even more inscrutable after the first round of party presidential debates 2020 can The 20 plus Democratic candidates for the 2020 Presidential election Terry McAuliffe, who’ll finish his term as Virginia governor early next year, is an unapologetic friend and backer of both Clintons. He’s a famously fabulous fund-raiser and he has put together a solidly (and surprisingly) progressive record in the commonwealth — tightening gun control laws and reinstituting voting rights for more than 150,000 felons. His national stature grew during the Charlottesville protests when he provided the sort of moral leadership so sorely lacking from the White House. Millennials are expected to surpass baby boomers as the largest generation of eligible voters in 2020. So it would only make sense for a few politicians who might still get carded to run themselves. One is Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts congressman, is a charismatic, intelligent Iraq war veteran who isn’t afraid to call out party elders like Nancy Pelosi. He’s only 38, and it’s almost certainly too soon for him to have much of a chance at winning the

nomination in 2020, but it doesn’t hurt to put his name into the 2020 veepstakes. Christopher Murphy, a 44-yearold Connecticut senator, is casting his message at a different segment of millennials — those who live on Twitter, where he offers running political commentary, or listen to podcasts like “Pod Save America,” where he’s made several appearances. His and Mr. Ryan’s campaign slogans write themselves: “You’re Only as Old as You Feel.” Suffice it to say, the events of 2016 were enough to make any billionaire think a run for the White House was suddenly plausible. And even if Facebook’s political troubles have made a Mark Zuckerberg candidacy a non-starter, 2020 is drawing the interest of a range of other rich people. Mark Cuban, the outspoken owner of the N.B.A.’s Dallas Mavericks, is the most similar to Mr. Trump, right down to his starring role on a realityTV show. Howard Schultz, the founder of Starbucks, cuts a less bombastic figure, frequently denouncing partisanship. The difficult choice facing Democratic primary voters looks even more inscrutable after the first round of party presidential debates. Nothing matters more to Democratic voters than picking a nominee with the best chance of beating President Trump, who many party activists consider an existential threat to their values and priorities. But the question of which Democrat is most "electable" against Trump looks murkier and more contested than ever after the last two debates. Case in point, the thenfrontrunner, Biden, delivered a performance almost universally regarded as unsteady when he was challenged most forcefully by Harris on his record on school busing during the 1970s but also

Deadly Bat Fungus Detected in California The fungus that causes White-nose Syndrome (WNS), a deadly disease of bats, has been detected in low levels in California for the first time. Fungal DNA of Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) was detected in samples collected this spring from bats on private land in the Plumas County town of Chester. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) have been preparing for possible detection of the fungus with partner organizations since 2009. While there is currently no indication the disease itself is affecting bat populations in California, the lab tests suggest Pd is here. WNS awakens bats during hibernation, causing them to use energy reserves needed to survive winter, when insects they rely upon for food are not available. The fungus was first detected in New York in 2006 and spread incrementally. Bats that have contracted the diseasehave now been confirmed in 33 states and seven Canadian provinces. Including the recent California discovery, the fungus alone has now been detected in a total of five states. WNS has killed millions of bats in the U.S., including more than 90 percent of the bats in some hibernation colonies. Since bats usually produce only one offspring per year, it could take decades for some populations to recover from a major die-off.

"WNS is considered one of the deadliest wildlife diseases, having killed over six million North American bats since it was discovered," said CDFW Wildlife Veterinarian and Epidemiologist Dr. Deana Clifford. "WNS doesn't affect human health or pets, but the ecological impacts of bat die-offs may indirectly impact agricultural systems through loss of the natural pesticide effect and nutrient cycling of bats." Until spring 2016, the westernmost occurrence of Pd was in eastern Nebraska. In March of that year WNS was confirmed in Washington State1,300 miles west of the nearest known location of the fungus. How it got there is unknown; Pd spreads through physical contact with an infected bat or Pd in the environment. Because spores are persistent, people can also spread the fungus from infected areas to non-infected areas on their shoes, clothes or gear. Surveillance for WNS has been supported by a national program administered by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin in collaboration with FWS, Northern Arizona University (NAU), and Bat Conservation International (BCI). CDFW has worked with the National Park Service Klamath Network (NPS KLMN) and others to collect swab samples from bats around California since 2016. The samples tested for the

DNA signature of Pd were negative until 2018, when one sample from a little brown bat maternity colony in Chester suggested the fungus may be present at low levels. In 2019, the same site and another in Chester yielded three bats with similar low-level detections. Dr. Alice Chung-MacCoubrey of the NPS KLMN, who led the surveillance work at Chester and several other northern California sites, said, "The detection of Pd at Chester, even at these low levels, is troubling. It has now been detected in two successive years at two different sites and with testing by both the NWHC lab and the NAU lab. In other parts of North America affected by WNS, low-level Pd detections preceded detection of the disease itself by one to four years." "Detection of Pd at the levels reported in Chester are possible thanks to advanced tools and surveillance networks in place today that we did not have in the years right after WNS was discovered," said Jeremy Coleman, National White-nose Syndrome coordinator for the FWS, which leads the national response to the disease. "These very early indications that Pd is present allow for a more proactive response by local partners than what has been possible before. Just how long we'll have before WNS emerges in California's bats is a big unknown." CDFW leads the California WNS

Steering Committee, a multi-agency scientific research group that has been monitoring WNS nationally since 2009. The Committee includes the FWS, NPS, U.S. Forest Service, USGS, BCI, California State Parks, U.S. Department of Defense and National Speleological Society (NSS). They developed a WNS response plan for California that outlines actions to be taken if the fungus or disease arrives in California. "It is critically important for CDFW and our partners to follow up on these detections," said CDFW Wildlife Ecologist Dr. Scott Osborn. "In the coming months and years, we will intensify surveillance for WNS, monitor impacts on bat populations, and assist with research on disease management. We hope disease treatment and prevention techniques currently in development will be available soon." Meanwhile, Osborn asks all Californians to be vigilant and cooperate with management actions that may be taken to slow the spread of WNS. People can assist with surveillance by reporting unusual behavior they see in bats. Sick or dying bats observed during winter in the colder regions of the state should be reported to CDFW at www.wildlife.ca.gov/conservation/ laboratories/wildlife-investigations/ monitoring/wns/report. by Sen. Michael Bennet on the deal, he cut in 2012 with Republican Mitch McConnell during the "fiscal cliff" triggered by the expiration of the tax cuts that passed under President George W. Bush. In the new CNN poll, 43% of Democrats picked Biden as the candidate most likely to beat Trump, a strong but not overwhelming result. More impressively, Biden still led among those who had watched the debates. He even led Harris among nonwhite Democrats on that question by more than 6 to 1. But other results showed a crack in his foundation: Among the three-fifths of Democrats in the poll who said they were most focused on finding a nominee who could beat Trump, Biden led only narrowly in the horse race, drawing 23%, compared with 18% for both Harris and Warren. In that sense, the encounter with Biden offered Harris a double benefit: It not only showcased her formidable debating skills but also demonstrated weakness in Biden. A wide array of Democratic observers instantly concurred that Harris had propelled herself back into the top tier of candidates -- a conclusion reinforced, at least for now, by the CNN survey. But almost as soon as Harris earned plaudits for her confident, dynamic performance, skeptics raised doubts about the substance of her remarks. Centrist voices in the party noted that during the debate she again stumbled trying to explain whether she would ban private health insurance in a single-payer system. (The answer seems to be yes, except for peripheral services such as cosmetic surgery.) And after the kinetic force of her challenge to Biden faded, others questioned whether Democrats in 2020 really want to debate the efficacy of school busing.

From the other direction, longtime Democratic pollster Stanley B. Greenberg, who conducted focus groups around the debates for the liberal activist organization Women's Voices, Women's Vote, predicted from those sessions that Harris could face resistance among African American voters who conflate an attack on Biden with a challenge to Obama's legacy. "Assuming Biden is able to get his act together, he has a real base (among African Americans), I believe, grounded in historical dynamics that make it very hard for Harris to make further gains," Greenberg said. "At some point Biden is going to push back, maybe using the President (Obama), by saying 'I'm carrying on his legacy.' " As they assess these contrasting considerations, Democrats find themselves second-guessing their choices from day to day, if not hour to hour. The conundrum is that no one can convincingly say today whether the strategy of mobilizing nonvoters is more likely to beat Trump than a focus on trying to persuade swing voters who may be tiring of him. Whether Democrats can replicate that success with Trump himself on the ballot, though, is another question -- one of many for which there are no reliable answers right now. New forecasts from the nonpartisan States of Change project offers similarly mixed messages. The projection that minorities are likely to increase their share of the national vote by 2 percentage points again in 2020, while non-college whites decline by an equal amount and college-educated whites remain stable, might encourage a mobilization strategy. But the group's forecast that whites, many of them, older, will still cast just over 80% of the 2020 votes in the critical states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, and nearly 90% in Wisconsin, offers evidence for those who want to focus on persuading swing voters. The bigger thing is nobody really knows what's electable or not. "Electability is this notion we know what voters want. One of the silver linings of 2016 is people are finally starting to understand that politics and political change are not linear and that things that are very surprising happen all the time. ... By any measure, Donald Trump should have not won the 2016 election, but he did, and I think that is forcing many people to change their mind about what is electable and what isn't.
