OPINION: Is Donald Trump the Worst President on Minority Issues in 50 Years? By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

During President Trump’s first year in office, he let minorities know exactly how he feels about them. (Wikipedia Commons) Donald Trump, a man best known as a “birther” with a reality TV show and a real estate empire, who claimed that Mexico was sending drugs and rapists to the United States, was sworn in as president on January 20, 2017. What happened next was predictable and we should expect more of the same in 2018. Here are seven decisions from the past year confirming that Trump has been the worst president for African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities over the last 50 years. 1. Trump picks Jeff Sessions to succeed Loretta Lynch as Attorney General of the U.S. Trump went out of his way to make sure that his administration’s justice policy reflected 1940s America, when he selected Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III as his Attorney General. According to a Huffington Post article published in January 2017, Sessions not only supported gutting the Voting Rights Act in 2013, he also has “a record of blocking Black judicial nominees.” Sessions, “unsuccessfully prosecuted Black civil rights activists for voter fraud in 1985?including a former aide to Martin Luther King, Jr.” Since, Sessions has taken over at the Justice Department, he has recused himself from an investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and ordered a review of Obama era police reforms. This is one time where the selection of Rudy Giuliani for attorney general may have actually looked like a more moderate choice. 2. Trump says “there were very fine people on both sides” at the Charlottesville White nationalists rally, during a Trump Tower press conference. Never mind that one of the largest gatherings of racists in America since the end of the Civil Rights Movement occurred only eight months into

Trump’s presidency. Put that aside. Trump’s “both sides” comments on who was to blame for the public street fight in the college town was all anyone needed to understand regarding the thinking of America’s 45th president on the issue of race. “I am not putting anybody on a moral plane, what I’m saying is this: you had a group on one side and a group on the other, and they came at each other with clubs and it was vicious and horrible and it was a horrible thing to watch, but there is another side,” said Trump. “But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides.” Trump also said, “I’ve condemned many different groups, but not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch. Those people were also there, because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue Robert E. Lee.” 3. Trump calls for NFL owners to fire players over silent protests. Trump said NFL owners should respond to the players by saying, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!” Just in case you missed it with his comments on Charlottesville, Trump was back again to spoil the start of the NFL season by commenting on players who dared to silently protest racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem. Trump called kneeling during the anthem, “a total disrespect of our heritage,” and a “total disrespect for everything we stand for.” The result was more protests by NFL players who then locked arms on sidelines across the U.S. with many White players and coaches participating. Even Rush Limbaugh found himself having issues with Trump on this one. “There’s a part of this story that’s starting to make me nervous, and it’s this: I am very uncomfortable with the President

of the United States being able to dictate the behavior and power of anybody,” said Limbaugh. “That’s not where this should be coming from.” 4. Trump uses an executive order to block travel of refugees from majority-Muslim countries to the U.S. When you have former staffers for Jeff Sessions writing executive orders on immigration policy, you can expect what happened at the Trump White House on January 27, 2017. With absolutely no warning, on the seventh day of his presidency, Trump signed an immigration and travel executive order. This order had Steven Miller’s fingerprints all over it, After a few days of chaos and protests at airports across the nation, federal judges to applied an initial smackdown blocking the order. But Trump’s DOJ revised the order to pass some of those legal tests. 5. Trump launches sham voting commission to investigate “voter fraud.” Since many voting rights advocates agree that Republicancontrolled state legislatures cook up the most egregious voting laws, it should have been surprising to no one that former Kansas Attorney General, Kris Kobach, would be a fixture of the Trump Administration. Kobach is the Vice Chairman and “driving force” behind Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. Since, he’s spent so much time rooting out voter fraud that is all but non-existent, Kobach was perfect for the job. According to the Brennan Center, Kobach was the “driving force behind a Kansas law that included both a strict photo ID requirement to vote and proof of citizenship to register—which has blocked thousands of eligible citizens from the polls” and “has repeatedly made extravagant claims of in-person voter fraud or noncitizen voting with little or no evidence.”

After Trump kept repeating the falsehood that millions of fraudulent votes were cast in 2016, everyone knew this was coming. Hillary Clinton won 3 million more votes than Trump so a “voting integrity” commission was a given. 6. Trump pardons Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The Bull Connor of his era, Arpaio was Sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., for 24 years. According to one DOJ expert, Arpaio oversaw “the worst pattern of racial profiling by a law enforcement agency in U.S. history.” Trump was perfectly consistent in his anti-immigrant rhetoric of 2016 in pardoning Arpaio on August 25, 2017 from a conviction for criminal contempt of court. Trump just couldn’t resist another opportunity to give a wink of approval to the rightwing. 7. Trump nominates Neil Gorsuch to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Instead of nominating a Black woman to replace Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, President Obama picked someone whose nomination no one cared about or would rally around (the instantly unexciting Merrick Garland). With that, the deal was done. The selection of Garland easily allowed the Republicancontrolled Senate to ignore Obama’s pick and run out the clock out, opening the door for Trump to select Neil Gorsuch, who has “voted 100 percent of the time with the court’s most conservative member, Clarence Thomas, according to SCOTUSblog,” NPR reported. New California Laws of Interest – 2018 Government News

Tuesday, January 2, 2018 I am writing to bring you up to date regarding key California employment laws that took effect as of the new year. What follows is a description of newly approved California laws, effective January 1, 2018, at least some of which may impact your company directly if you have employees in the Golden State. 1. SB 3 – Minimum Wage Increase On January 1, 2018, the California state minimum wage increases to $11.00 per hour for businesses with 26 or more employees. Small businesses with 25 or fewer employees will continue to pay a minimum wage of $10.50 per hour. Remember, this increase also impacts the “salary basis” component of the test for exemption from overtime under California law, which requires exempt employees to earn a salary equivalent no less than two times the state minimum wage for full-time employment. Beginning January 1, exempt employees must be paid an annual salary of at least $45,760 for employers with 26 or more employees. For employees with 25 or fewer employees, the minimum salary for exempt employees remains at $43,680. 2. SB 63 – Leave for New Parents Businesses with 20 or more employees must provide eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid job-protected leave to bond with a new child within one year of the child’s birth, adoption, or foster care placement. To be eligible for new parent leave, an employee must: (1) have worked for the employer more than 12 months, (2) have worked at least 1250 hours during the prior 12-month period, and, (3) work at a worksite where there are at least 20 employees within a 75-mile radius. For employees with over 50 employees, this law does not add any requirements beyond what is already mandated under the California Family Rights Act. Thus, this law impacts California employers with 20 to 49 employees. 3. AB 908 – Paid Family Leave and State Disability Insurance Benefits This law increases the amount of PFL or SDI benefits an employee can receive to either 60% or 70% of earnings, depending on the employee’s income. There will still be a maximum weekly benefit limit on the amount received. The law removes the current seven-day waiting period that exists before an employee is eligible to receive PFL benefits. 4. AB 1008 – State-Wide Banthe-Box Law This law applies to employers with five or more employees, and prohibits employers from asking

about criminal history on job applications. The law also prohibits inquiring about or considering criminal history at any time before a conditional offer of employment has been made. Once a conditional offer is made, an employer may seek certain criminal history. Any preliminary decision not to hire because of a conviction history requires written notice to the applicant, who must be given the opportunity to respond. A specific timeline and process must be followed. The employer must consider any information provided by the applicant before making a final decision. If the employer makes a final decision to deny employment in whole or in part because of the criminal conviction, written notice to the applicant is again required. Specific information must be included in the final determination notice. 5. AB 168 – Salary History AB 168 prohibits employers from asking about a job applicant’s salary history, including information on compensation and benefits. Employers also are banned from seeking this information through an agent, such as a third-party recruiter. This new law also prohibits employers from relying on salary history information as a factor in determining whether to hire an applicant or how much to pay the applicant. However, an employer may consider salary information that is voluntarily disclosed by the applicant without any prompting. Upon reasonable request, an employer must provide a job applicant with a pay scale for the position. As a result, employers must carefully analyze the value of each position before posting for new positions because informing applicants that salary expectations are “commensurate with experience” will no longer be acceptable. 6. AB 450 – Worksite Immigration Enforcement and Protections This law provides workers with protection from immigration enforcement while on the job. Employers are prohibited from (1) providing federal immigration enforcement agents access to nonpublic areas without a judicial warrant, and, (2) providing agents access to employee records without a subpoena or judicial warrant. This prohibition does not apply to Form I-9 inspections. Regarding Form I-9 inspections, employers must: (1) post a notice to all current employees informing them of any federal immigration agency’s inspections of Form I-9 or other employment records within 72 hours of receiving No(continued on page 8)

In fact, according to Monster.com, internship experience is one of the most important factors now for employers when considering new college grads for full-time positions. Here are the top 30 minority and Black internship programs for 2018:

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — What do democratic elections and learning a new skill have in common? Both involve taking risks, said the University of California, Riverside’s Georgia Warnke. On Jan. 16, Warnke, director of UCR’s Center for Ideas & Society (CIS), will lead the first installment of the university’s annual Disciplines in Dialogue lecture series. This year’s eight-part series, “Risky Business,” will see four pairs of UCR professors from

seemingly disparate academic departments come together to consider the merits and pitfalls of various types of risk-taking. Co-hosted by the UCR Palm Desert Center and the UCR Extension branch of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, “Risky Business” will feature discussions of four distinct topics, with two companion sessions — one in Riverside at the UCR Extension Center on a Tuesday, and the other the following Wednesday evening in Palm Desert — devoted to each topic.

The “Risky Business” series is free and open to the public, and the schedule is as follows: Electing Leaders Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at UCR Extension Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at UCR Palm Desert Center Worrying Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at UCR Extension Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at UCR Palm Desert Cen-

Pro Me Is Not Anti You®: A Crusade To Promote The Humanity Of People Community Education News

Vickie Gunnells-Hodge, founder of Love in Abundance, Inc. (LIA) Houston, TX (BlackNews.com) -- The world is screaming for equality among people, respect for the humanity of people, instinctive kindness between people, and individual and collective empowerment for people, to show the equal gifts and talents in people. Pro ME IS NOT Anti YOU® says we can collectively show the power of greatness in willing persons, through a willingness to first eliminate our fears and live the power of our truths, that begins with the inauguration of Give to Receive(TM) and 4 phases of video shorts. People need to experience their innate areas of greatness, to accept the greatness in others. The expansion of Vickie’s grandmother’s WHO AM I TO ME(TM) activities allows students to know a whopping 3,000 truths about their moral, spoken, written, visual, literacy, cultural, creative, social, and economic repertoires of great-

ness. As an online powerhouse of encouragements, bonuses, challenges, etc.; we create the belief that the playing field of opportunities are being leveled in the heart; mind; favor; and best interest of willing students. Give to Receive(TM) empowers students 10-100 with funds for advanced education (Receive), students must excel in their education in two related majors to create two incomes (Give). The first Give to Receive(TM) offering is a Bumper Sticker Contest (open to college and high school students) & a Window Decal Contest (open to intermediate, middle, and 9th grade students). Students get to create a design, pay $25 dollars, submit their design & the video announcing the story guiding it. There will be 12 winners per contest, earning a min. of $10,000 for advanced education, a monthly allowance (1 yr.) to have $5.00 for weekly wealth management training they will

pay for; and a possible personal investment, based on their Give. Students must wear new Pro ME IS NOT Anti YOU® gear ($35 max) in every new video short to Respectfully Shake Things Up(TM). These initiatives were ultimately born in the midst of events in 2002, when life as Vickie Gunnells-Hodge knew it changed. Two major truths became her new reality: 1) She founded Love In Abundance, Inc. (LIA) - a nonprofit to exist as a hand up, not out to single parents right above every cutoff for assistance, 2) She lied to the police, because of fear introduced as a child, made real as an adult. In 2014, Vickie had to accept the fact that she added the blemish to her character, and the limits of power to her work (for some people). At face value, the lie diminishes the fact that she’s served 3000+ students in Title I schools, taught financial literacy to 2,000 students as the

Education Chair of the Women’s Council of the Houston Real Estate Association, helped 47 students enter college (several helped her in a research project with college professors), she entered college as a serious college student studying psychology and sociology, within 3 weeks of beginning LIA’s in-school program in 2005, where she served for over 10 years, without funding. Vickie just had to see what was going on in schools for students readily talked about in news reports. She chose to allow their realities guide her to write 16 books with real opportunities to help them live some foundational truths, and be excited about the empowerment available in actually learning (truths surely denied them in their caste system public education). America’s long shown her hand. It’s time for Black America to show ours. Using our innate gifts and talents to show our kids that supporting each other is not only acceptable, but a viable option for living. Pro ME IS NOT Anti YOU® will show the world the power of our individual voices, while creating opportunities for Black business owners via 13 t-shirt vendors, 24 fashion designers, and 13 wealth management or economic empowerment educators (based on licensing). The 1-yr contract signed with these businesses will help grow 50 Black businesses, who will expand the power of 50 nonprofits serving underserved Black students through their Give of 12% of their monthly net profits. Open minded nonprofits can earn 35% of net profits earned from referring participants to be active in the Pro ME IS NOT Anti YOU® Crusade. So, who's ready...? County Democratic Party Gets A Fresh Start SB County News

Here's What Happens When New Supermarkets Start Appearing in Low Income Neighborhoods Business/Consumer News

Ron Cohen, County Democratic Party Chair James Andrews, County Democratic Party 1st Vice-Chair San Bernardino, California -The San Bernardino County Democratic Party is ready to move forward into the new year after resolving months of internal turmoil at their meeting in Colton, Dec. 28, with the expulsion of political consultant Chris Robles for multiple violations of the California Elections Code. The party elected a new Chair and a new 1st Vice-Chair at the meeting and appointed a new Parliamentarian. It also declared two positions representing the county on the Executive Committee of the state party open for election at its next meeting later this month. The new Chair of the County Democratic Party is Ron Cohen of Yucca Valley. Cohen is a decorated Vietnam veteran who enlisted in the USAF in 1970 and retired as a Major after 20 years in the service. He worked as an engineer for Boeing in various Southern California locations and retired in 2011 as a Program Manager. “Our party’s most urgent priority right now is to recruit, train,

and support the most qualified Democratic candidates we can find for the June 5 primary,” Cohen said. “Then we will focus on getting out the vote to support all of our candidates in the November general election.” James Albert was elected to fill the vacated position of 1st Vice-Chair. This office acts as an advocate for the Democratic clubs to the county party. It also serves to encourage the development of more clubs and help the clubs grow membership. Albert was a delegate for Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention in July, 2016. He is also the Vice-President of the San Bernardino County Young Democrats. He graduated from Aquinas High School in 2009 and received a full basketball scholarship to California State University, Monterey Bay, where he graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology. “Local clubs offer a place for residents to connect with others who share their political ideologies and values and give people

Tim Prince, County Democratic Party Parliamentarian

the opportunity to be the change they want to see happen in the Democratic Party,” James said. “I look forward to collaborating with party members and activists to foster more clubs and help them grow.” Attorney Tim Prince was appointed the new Parliamentarian. Prince has been a candidate for Congress, and for Mayor and City Attorney of San Bernardino. He is the principal partner of Tomlinson & Prince and has also served as a Judge Pro Tempore. He is a graduate of San Bernardino High School and the University of California, Berkeley, and his father, Ralph Prince, served San Bernardino as its City Attorney for 28 years. “It is my honor to be part of a team which will reform and reactivate our county party,” said Prince. “For years the Parliamentarian's role has been abused and neglected. As Parliamentarian I will restore respect and dignity to the county party through objective and unbiased opinions.”

A Parliamentarian is an expert in rules of order and the proper procedures for the conduct of meetings of deliberative assemblies. Parliamentarians assist organizations in the drafting and interpretation of bylaws and rules of order, and the planning and conduct of meetings. Civil Rights Leader Smacks Down Trump’s Immigration Stance During Christmas Breakfast Jonathan Harris| California Black Media

Christmas morning, the President of the San Diego chapter of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, Rev. Shane Harris, took a swipe at President Trump’s actions on immigration. Admonishing Trump, Rev. Harris said, “Joseph came and took baby Jesus and his mother from a city where terror was happening, into Egypt where safety was. So why should refugees be slandered by the President of the United States?” “Here we are, on Christmas, worshipping this man that was a refugee but they won’t take on his values,” Harris said.

The Trump administration has made repeated efforts to minimize the number of foreign refugees accepted by America, characterizing them as a terrorism threat. According to a December report in the New York Times, the administration is also now considering a plan that would separate children from their families, if they are caught attempting to cross the border illegally. During his remarks at the breakfast Rev. Harris said the event was about “being able to provide.” He said there is more to impacted communities and events held in those communities by

NAN and other organizations than is often shown in the media. “It’s not just about anger and outrage when there is an injustice but being able to provide and showing the community coming together, like we did today at this breakfast.” The event was hosted at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, in the House of Justice Auditorium. Organizers for the breakfast said about 50 toys were given away and close to 200 came through to be fed. A press release for the breakfast said it looked to provide “a Christmas for the voiceless and

unheard and most vulnerable in society who are often fighting depression and even suicide.” Jared Moten, Vice-President of the San Diego chapter of NAN and Pastor of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist church, said he was proud to open up the church for the event and for NAN San Diego’s community work going forward. “Being the pastor of this church and the Vice-President of NAN San Diego, it just seemed like the logical approach.” Jenny Peterson, the niece of Alfred Olango, was there supporting the event as well, as part of the Alfred Olango Foundation. She along with many of the volunteers arrived at 7AM. Olango, a Ugandan refugee, was killed by El Cajon police in 2016, garnering national attention. Peterson said she was there to "spread love during the season of giving." This was Peterson’s second Christmas without her uncle. "You can't dwell forever,” she said. “Going out and giving allows you to receive happiness." In addition to giving away toys and feeding vulnerable San Diegans, the breakfast was to serve as the first of a regular event that will take place every week at the church. "This is the inaugural event for the justice center of NAN. We'll be here every Saturday to help people with cases they feel might be of interest to the National Action Network’s San Diego division,” said Kelly King, a longtime volunteer with NAN. She added, “The intention of events like these is to go back to the strategy of Martin Luther King, where civil rights and service to the community are melded together." The Saturday meetings at the church are being billed as a Saturday Action Rally and are styled after the weekly events that are hosted by the New York chapter of the National Action Network and air on the Impact Network.

Researchers have completed a study on the effects of opening supermarkets in low-income neighborhoods. The surprising results showed that the benefits to low-income families went way beyond health, improving other aspects of their lives, including economic.

How lives are changed Low-income families often live in areas that are referred to as "food deserts," meaning there are no places to buy fresh produce and other healthy food choices. But after studying a low-income neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where a new supermarket opened after decades of absence, researchers found that the benefits included so much more than just improving health. The health benefits included:

10 percent fewer new cases of high cholesterol 7 percent lower cases of arthritis among residents compared with new cases where there is no supermarket available Slower increase in diabetes The non-health-related benefits included: Household incomes increased Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dropped by 12 percent Although more research will be done, it does appear from the study that locating supermarkets in low-income neighborhoods not only improves diet and health, but also includes economic improvements by creating more job opportunities, generating tax revenues and increasing customer traffic to support other businesses. Tax Giveaway to the Wealthy Lacking Compassion for Most Americans Plan Promotes a Growing Inequality and Removes Healthcare for 13 Million Political Government News

BALTIMORE (December 29, 2017)-The NAACP issued the following statement regarding the horrendous tax plan passed this week by Congress: This new tax giveaway removes healthcare for 13 million Americans, and dumps over $1.5 trillion dollars of debt onto the American public while continuing to perpetuate the sad mythology which says by giving the rich more, we all do better. This plan completely ignores what we all know to be the truth: extra money given back to the working class will go into the economy at a much higher rate than money given to the wealthy. While millions in our nation prepare for the holidays with the stark reality of the loss of healthcare and an uncertain future, our nation's most powerful elected officials decide to take from those without to give more to our nation's wealthiest 1 percent, who already own 40 percent of our nation's wealth. According to one estimate, by 2027, individuals making over a million dollars will see an additional tax giveaway of $5.8 billion

more; yet those making $4050,000 will pay an extra $5.3 billion more in taxes. What Congress has continued to show is that far from representing the interests of the people, our nation's policies disproportionately favor the wealthy. Our democracy becomes healthy only when the politics and polices emanating from Congress reflect the American people and not solely the interests of corporations or our wealthiest citizens. The NAACP unequivocally stands in strong opposition to this tax giveaway and calls on the President to veto it. About the NAACP Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. New Partnership Helps Low Income Families Find Help With Expensive Medications By Jeffrey Lewis

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) - If you or someone you love is one of the millions of Americans with a chronic disease or a lifethreatening condition, pharmaceutical manufacturers and their partners offer you a gift of hope in 2018.Pharmaceutical manufacturers are criticized as Scrooge or the Grinch in our country’s health care system. Elected officials and advocacy organizations want to blame somebody for rising Rx costs, and the most obvious target is the Big Pharma. But in this blame game, very little attention is given to the help the pharmaceutical industry and its partners quietly provide to patients in need through a variety of programs. Such programs are often based on the patient’s household income, but not always. Patients with no health insurance coverage are often the first group considered eligible. Likewise, those

with one or more chronic or lifethreatening conditions are a high priority. If you fall into one of these categories, check out the Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) found on individual pharmaceutical company websites or through Partnership for Prescription Assistance (www.PPARX.org), the website created by PhRMA, the trade association representing pharmaceutical manufacturers, linking patients to more than 475 different assistance programs. On most of these websites, you can be connected with a customer support team member who can help determine if you are eligible and get you enrolled. You will be asked to verify that you are insured or uninsured and, in some cases, provide proof of income. You may need your physician to validate your condition. But once approved, access to medication is almost immediate.

(Note: Patients enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid may not be eligible.) Pharmaceutical manufacturers also offer co-pay assistance, in which the patient is offered help with the cost of medication copayments. Some co-pay assistance programs do not limit who is eligible. And, it is important to know that some co-pay assistance programs will not help people on Medicare. Each program sets its own rules. People searching for an online provider should check out www.RxAssist.org. This site was developed by AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical manufacturer, with the sole purpose of helping people access needed medications. It is one of the best sites available. The California Chronic Care Coalition (CCCC) has launched the website www.MyPatientRights.com and

is taking it nationwide to help people who have been denied treatment or medicines, experienced delays or are dissatisfied with the decisions made by their health plan. Today, this program is operating in 17 states. It helps patients get the care or treatment they need if denied, or if their plans don’t cover their meds and force them to pay full price. The program is available in 17 states check the website to see if your state has a program. If you need help with your medications, you are not alone. Go to the websites cited throughout this article. They can help connect you with low-cost and free alternatives. It is worth your time to explore these options. Riverside Community Health Bottled Water: How Long Does Foundation Announces Update On It Really Last? Grants Program For The Year Of Health/Fitness News 2018 Health/Fitness News (Riverside, CA) January 2, 2018- Effective December 29, Riverside Community Health Foundation (RCHF) has announced an upcoming shift towards proactive grantmaking, a departure from RCHF’s practice of responsive grantmaking since the program was established in 1997. The shift is in line with current trends in grantmaking, as funders strive to be more strategic with how they use their resources in order to delve deeper into persistent areas of concern and make longterm commitments to address them. While responsive grantmaking involves providing grants to accommodate requests from nonprofits for programs that fall within the funder’s mission and guidelines, proactive grantmaking (also known as strategic grantmaking) is grantmaking with more focused goals, and a defined set of strategies for how a foundation wants to accomplish those goals. During the year of 2017, RCHF temporarily halted its regular grants program in order to gain insight on the community’s greatest health needs and adjust the Foundation’s priorities and strategies to align accordingly. RCHF used this period to engage in a community assessment, gather input from community stakeholders, scan existing Riverside area initiatives, and engage in dialogue about opportunities for improving effectiveness and defining areas of focus. The Foundation has identified three priority funding areas for its grantmaking program: Heart Disease and Stroke; Diabetes; and Behavioral Health (including mental health and substance use). In the next several months, RCHF will work to define a proactive grant program to address these priority areas for

the Riverside and Jurupa Valley communities by supporting best practices and promoting change through collaboration. By June of 2018, Riverside Community Health Foundation expects to release information on its new grantmaking program, which will be aligned with its three identified priority areas. The funding pause will remain in effect until the new grants program is launched. In January 2018, the grantmaking program will resume for applicant organizations which qualify for RCHF’s inpatient funding area (qualified applicants are entities which provide hospital services through a non-profit or governmental hospital or an insurance product). RCHF’s Inpatient funds are restricted for the provision of Inpatient health care programs, subsidizing or reimbursing inpatient healthcare, or medical insurance for medically indigent populations residing in the RCHF service area (92501, 92502, 92503, 92504, 92505, 92506, 92507, 92508, 92509, 92518, 92521, 92522 and 91752). Riverside Community Health Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, public benefit corporation with a mission to improve the health and well-being of Riverside residents. Since 1997, RCHF has granted over $33.3 million to the Riverside community. Bottled Water: How Long Does It Really Last?...continued which can then leak into the liquid. You can freeze and re-freeze them (but NOT sparkling water) for use in a cooler or ice chest – but do not drink them when thawed (see further notes below). Of course, all food and drink products last for a shorter period of time if they are not stored properly. But remember, unlike a lot of other drinks, it does not usually have a sell by date because water has an indefinite expiration date. According to Arrowhead Water (a leading bottler of Spring water) their bottles have a 2 year shelf life and the best before date recommended for best taste is located directly after the letters “BB”. How to tell if Water is bad, rotten or spoiled? Practicing proper hygiene and food safety techniques will help prevent foodborne illness. Although not a perfect test, your senses are usually the most reliable instruments to tell if your water has gone bad. Some common traits of contaminated water are cloudiness and a strange taste or smell. But, it is often your sense of taste that can tell the difference – which by the time it reaches that sense, all you can do is spit it out! If there is a chemical taste to your

bottled water, it is not healthy (see below). There are, of course, certain health risks associated with spoiled drinks so always remember to practice food safety and enjoy your drinks before their shelf life has expired! How to store Water to extend its shelf life? Store water in a cool dark place away from cleaning products, gasoline, paint thinner and other toxic or odorous materials. This is especially true now that bottles have become greener (new lighter & thinner material). Popular materials include PET plastic, high-density polyethylene, and polycarbonate plastics. Glass and aluminum cans are other varieties though less common. Chances are the bottled water you drink is in a PET plastic bottle that’s 100% recyclable You can help water stay fresh longer by storing it in your refrigerator immediately after use. Never leave bottled water in direct sunlight or even inside your car all day on a hot sunny day. Chemicals from the plastic container will heat and leak into the water. Drinking these bottles…

Heart Disease, Stroke Cutting Black Lives Short Life span about three years less than for whites, heart association statement says By Robert Preidt

Bottled water is past just being popular, it’s a way of life now. Most people don’t trust regular water that comes out the tap. Nowadays, the majority of people usually consume water that is either filtered in some way or bottled. With bottled water, many of us buy it in packs or in bulk, which raises questions about how long it should last. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) reports that bottled waters have an unclear shelf life, especially if it is produced according to regulations & remains unopened. Hence, the expiration dates on water bottles are voluntary, & might reflect odor and taste rather safety. Because of this reason, you will possibly not find “sell by”, “best by” or “use by” dates on the bottle. But can the water inside go bad? The answer is yes. Although many of us don’t have the fancy machines or detectors at home, you can use your “senses” as a reliable way to find out if the water is bad. Here are some common characteristics of contaminated or impure water: If you experience any of these, you might as well just toss it out and get another bottle. It’s better to pay an extra dollar or two now, than medical expenses later. Here is a general rule of thumb

for most kinds of bottled water: UNOPENED Distilled Bottled Water lasts – 2+ Years (pantry), 2+ Years (refrigerated) UNOPENED Flavored Water lasts for 9 Months (pantry), 9 Months (refrigerated) UNOPENED Vitamin Water lasts for 9 Months 9 Months UNOPENED Sparkling Water lasts for 1+ Years 1+ Years UNOPENED Coconut Water lasts for weeks to a couple of months depends on packaging & preservatives (pantry), 1 Year (refrigerated) OPEN Bottled Water lasts for 23 Hours (pantry) 3-5 Days (refrigerator) OPEN Vitamin Water last 2 hours (pantry), 3-5 days (refrigerator) OPEN Sparking Water lasts for 2-3 Hours (pantry) 2-3 Days (refrigerator) OPEN Coconut Water lasts for 2 Hours (pantry) 24-48 Hours (refrigerator) According to Eat By Date, freezing bottled water for consumption is not recommended because of the chemicals contained in the bottle. Freezing and boiling temperatures break down the chemicals in plastic bottles (continued in next 2 columns)

MONDAY, Oct. 23, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Black Americans have a shorter life expectancy than whites, and higher rates of heart disease and stroke may be a major reason why, a new American Heart Association statement suggests. In recent years, life expectancy for blacks was over three years less than for whites -- 75.5 years vs. almost 79 years, according to the statement, which was based on a review of more than 300 studies. Black people have a higher rate of heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest, heart failure and strokes. Between 1999 and 2010, heart disease and stroke contributed to more than 2 million years of life lost among black people, the researchers said. Heart disease and stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes also start at an earlier age among black people than white people, the review found. For example, 14 percent of black children have high blood pressure, compared to 8 percent of white children. Twenty percent of black children aged 2 to 19 are obese, compared to 15 percent of white children. Among adults, 58 percent of black women and 38 percent of black men are obese, compared to 33 percent of white women and 34 percent of white

men, the review found. "It is vital that we start preventing disparities by reaching children and young adults with education about the importance of a healthy lifestyle for maintaining health," said statement group chair Mercedes Carnethon, an associate professor of preventive medicine (epidemiology) at Northwestern University. "Young adulthood is a time when a lot of people drop out of the health care system. If there's no safety net of health care available that emphasizes preventive care, then these disparities in the onset of the risk factors are likely to persist," she added in a heart association news release. Poverty is a major factor in the higher rates of heart disease and stroke among black people, but even middle- and upper-class black people are at higher risk than middle- and upper-class white people, the release said. "Although most people experience stress from jobs and major life events, African-Americans are more likely to have persistent economic stress and to face concerns about maintaining their health, including preventing weight gain and managing chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes," Carnethon said. The new statement was published Oct. 23 in Circulation, a heart association publication.

How To File a Fictitious Business Name in California You must register an assumed name within 40 days of starting to conduct business (which can be different from the date of forming your business entity). For 30 days after registering, you must run a weekly notice in a newspaper of record for the county, and attest this afterwards by affidavit to the Clerk. The registration must be renewed every 5 years, but newspaper publication is not required unless details have changed. Registering a fictitious business name does not create a business entity. The document is actually known as a "statement" and it purely creates a record that gives the general public a way to know who they're dealing with, as well as allowing formal process to reach through a brand name to the legal structure underlying it. Additional statements can be filed to record that the assumed name has now been abandoned, or that a partner has withdrawn from a partnership operating under a fictitious business name, and is no longer to be connected with that name. FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME REQUIREMENTS A fictitious business name cannot be the same as a name already in use, or so similar as to confuse or mislead. And while certain legal designations such as "Inc" and "LLC" cannot be used unless you are such an entity, certain unsupported designations such as "Company" or "Ltd" are allowed in California. If you're a self-employed contractor, you're a sole proprietorship by default, and the name of the legal "entity" doing business is you, under your name. You can use a business name that includes your surname without needing to register a fictitious name - for example, "John Doe Cars". But to obscure the name ("JD Cars") or to imply more owners or a different structure ("Doe & Sons", "Doe & Associates", "Doe Company") will require recording the name as an FBN. Frequently a sole proprietorship will do business under a fictitious name for ease of transactions. A partnership is also legally named from its owners' names, and will often make a similar choice. Filing an FBN will usually be necessary before a bank will open a business account under the assumed name. Obviously a business wants to receive payments made out to its trade name - and this is increasingly common with Internet domain-name branding, when many business names have a “DotCom” attached to them. Corporations and LLCs can choose their business name when they file their Articles to form the entity. But frequently they'll want to adopt a different name, or many such names, for branding or trademark reasons. If a company is launching a new product or service, marketing decisions may call for a new brand name. Or, if John Doe Texas wants to expand operations into California and finds John Doe California already in business use, a new fictitious business name will be required. HOW TO REGISTER YOUR FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME State law (California Business And Professions Code Sections 17900-17930) requires you to register with the Clerk of the county housing your principal place of business, or with San Bernardino County if you're an out-of-state company. There's no limit to the number of names you can register, provided they're available and meet relevant criteria. The recording fee is set by law , but individual counties will vary . San Bernardino County, for example, charges $55, and $10 for each additional name in the same filing. Registration forms also vary by county. It's important to check a specific county's requirements with its Clerk's office. For additional information, go to www.sbcounty.gov/arc or call 1-855-REC-CLRK(1-855-732-2575)

Activist Erica Garner Remembered For Her Relentless Campaign For Justice By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor)

Activist Erica Garner died on December 30, 2017 after suffering cardiac arrest and brain damage from a lack of oxygen. (Wikimedia Commons) Erica Garner, who became an activist for all who were wronged by the American justice system, died on Saturday, December 30. She was 27. A Twitter account associated with Erica Garner spoke of her compassion for humanity. CNN reported that her family is controlling the account. “When you report this you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt,” Garner’s account tweeted. “Her heart was bigger than the world. It really, really was. She cared when most people wouldn’t have. She was good. She only pursued right, no matter what. No one gave her justice.” Garner famously and fiercely sought justice for her father, Eric Garner, who died from a police chokehold in Staten Island, New York on July 17, 2014. She led marches and demonstrations in New York City and other places, and even appeared on national television imploring the Department of Justice to review the circumstances that led up to her father’s death. Erica Garner’s mother, Esaw Snipes, said, “She was a fighter, she was a warrior and she lost the battle. She never recovered from when her father died,” according to CNN. Snipes said that Garner suffered

from the effects of an enlarged heart after giving birth to her son three months ago, CNN reported. “I warned her everyday, you have to slow down, you have to relax and slow down,” Snipes said. According to Erica Garner’s Twitter account, the activist went into cardiac arrest and suffered major brain damage from a lack of oxygen. In a statement about Erica Garner’s work as an advocate for criminal justice reform, Rev. Al Sharpton called her a warrior. Sharpton famously joined the Garner family in their push for justice against the New York City Police Department. “Many will say that Erica died of a heart attack, but that’s only partially true because her heart was already broken when she couldn’t get justice for her father,” Sharpton said. “Her heart was attacked by a system that would choke her dad and not hold accountable those that did it.” On a summer day in July 2014, officers approached Eric Garner whom they said was selling loose cigarettes near a store in Staten Island. A video released showed Officer Daniel Pantaleo grabbing Garner from behind and applying a chokehold while other officers helped tackle Garner, whom family members said had asthma. On the video, in a plea that has resonated around the world, Garner is heard saying, “I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe,” repeatedly. He died shortly after the incident. A grand jury failed to indict Pantaleo and, in 2015, the city settled a civil claim by Garner’s family against New York for nearly $6 million. Before and despite the settle(continued in next 2 columns)

Can’t decide yet whether you’re Team Riblets or Team Tenders? No problem – Applebee’s has you covered with the All-You-Can-Eat Mix & Match – you can start with riblets and refill on chicken tenders, or start with chicken tenders and refill with riblets. Do New Year’s Resolutions Actually Help Anyone?...continued as a result of my attempts, I was even more frustrated. I now had awareness about my feelings of annoyance within a given scenario, but I was not achieving the zen I had hoped for. In the end, it did not work out well for me. Why not, I wondered, was I failing at my task? A quick Google search revealed that, "only eight percent of people actually keep their New Year's resolutions." Additionally, there are many reasons people can't stick to their resolutions, "from setting too many of them to getting derailed by small failures." Lastly, the Internet reminded me that, "regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in the coming year." I concur. So now is the moment of truth how can I make this work for me?

As always, Applebee’s reminds you to please drink responsibly.

Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Apple American Group are located in Alhambra, Apple Valley, Azusa, Bakersfield, Bell Gardens, Camarillo, Chatsworth, Chino, Chula Vista, Clovis, Corona, El Cajon (Fletcher Parkway and Rancho San Diego), Escondido, Fountain Valley, Fresno (Friant, Herndon and West Shaw), Hanford, Hemet, Highland, City of Industry (Puente Hills Mall), La Habra, Lakewood (Del Amo), Lancaster, Lompoc, Menifee, Mira Loma, Montclair, Montebello, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, National City (Plaza Bonita), North Fontana, Norwalk, Oceanside, Ontario Mills, Palmdale, Porterville, Rancho Cucamonga, Salinas, San Diego (Balboa and Mira Mesa), Redlands, Riverside, San Dimas, San Marcos, Santa Ana, Santa Maria, Signal Hill, Temecula, Victorville, Visalia (Akers and Mooney), Walnut, and Watsonville.

“Thus Saith the Lord!” By: Lou Coleman-Yeboah

Activist Erica Garner Remembered For Her Relentless Campaign For Justice...continued ment, Erica Garner pushed for justice and, with a national platform, her voice became as big as any in the fight for freedom, justice and equality. “I had the honor of getting to know Erica and I was inspired by the commitment she made working towards a more just world for her children and future generations,” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted. “She was a fighter for justice and will not be forgotten.” Erica Garner supported Sanders’ 2016 campaign for president, even appearing in an ad for his campaign. “Though Erica didn’t ask to be an activist, she responded to the personal tragedy of seeing her father die while being arrested in New York City by becoming a leading proponent for criminal justice reform and for an end to police brutality,” Sanders said. The police “killed her unarmed, nonviolent father with an illegal chokehold and got off with nary a word,” activist Brittany Packnett wrote in a Twitter post. “Erica had to fight for justice. Then for her own life…she didn’t deserve this, her father didn’t deserve this. Her family doesn’t deserve this. All this for being Black in America. I

can’t.” In a March 2015 interview on NBC News, Erica Garner spoke passionately about the Black Lives Matter movement and other protests that sought justice. She recalled the August 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and how it wasn’t until months later, when the video of her father’s death was released, that the Eric Garner incident received national attention. Garner described seeing her father die via a cellphone video “a thousand-million times,” and when a grand jury failed to indict police officers, she said it was time to take her fight for justice to the streets. “To me, it was just saying, ‘you know what? I’m just going to march,” she told NBC News. Even when there weren’t television news cameras, Garner said she was determined to keep marching, to keep fighting. “That’s the most annoying question I get. People ask, ‘when will you stop marching? What do you want from marching?’ He was my father,” Erica Garner said during the interview. “I will always march.”

Witness For Justice #874

Do New Year’s Resolutions Actually Help Anyone? Bentley de Bardelaben UCC Executive for Administration and Communications Growing up, my siblings and I made many New Year's resolutions at the closing of each year. Some of them I was fairly successful at keeping. Others I did not. Many I frankly do not recall. I picked up this habit again in recent years, only to realize that the change I was trying to make, or the character trait I was seeking to address, kept presenting to me over… and over... and over again with little-to-no progress. UGH!! How frustrating.

What will be my path moving forward? If simple goals are easiest, then a simple goal it will be! Therefore in 2018 I resolve to live my life with more hope than fear. I commit to this despite the attacks by some elected officials on my (and other marginalized groups) civil rights. Despite the challenges of the moment we're in, I believe the scales of justice will find balance once again. As my paternal grandmother would often remind me, "baby, this too will pass." Experience has taught me, she was right. So as I step out of one year into the next, I will hold her words as a salve on my tender soul. I invite you to do likewise. Wishing you and those you love, the happiest, healthiest New Year.

The thing I desired was to develop more patience. I saw this as a way of becoming more purposeful; a spiritual practice and discipline in order to be more centered and calm. I had hoped that I might also lower my blood pressure in the process. NOPE. I have found myself with multiple opportunities to put my commitment to patience into practice – often several times each. Oy! But in the end, I wasn't less calm (continued in next 2 columns)

“Although I should have vomit you out of My mouth, because you say, I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing, and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked [Revelation 3:16], and because of your sinfulness and disobedience, know that I have loved you with an Everlasting Love, and because of My Love for you, welcome to the New Year, 2018. But, hear me and hear me good; DO NOT continue to take My Grace for granted, for there will come a time when I will not hear you, and it will be too late! You better ask Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears. [Hebrew 12:16-17]. Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds. [Zechariah 2:4]. Return to Me and I will return to you. [Malachi 3:7]. For it’s time to make up your mind, “Choose Whom you will serve this day…” Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away…” [James 4:14]. Repent NOW I tell you, for tomorrow may be too late! You know in the [Book of Hosea], Hosea didn’t try to hang on to Gomer by overlooking her affairs, manipulating her with guilt, or making empty threats. He simply said to her, “If you want to stay, I want you to stay, but with the understanding that you take whatever steps are necessary to end these affairs. If you want to go, you may go, but things cannot continue as they are. I want you to know that I’m not giving up on you, but I am willing to give you up if that is what you want.” Hosea, after the manner of God, was to show Gomer that a

relationship was still possible, not on the terms of her character, but on the terms of his commitment, “According to the love of the Lord.” Hosea’s solution to Gomer’s shameful past was to give her a brand new, secure start in their marriage. He was telling her that the past didn’t matter. They were going to begin working on their future, and there was only one rule – she had to let Hosea love her exclusively. She had to depend upon him for ALL her love needs. He ALONE was to be the source of her security in their relationship. That is God’s desire for all His people. Don’t be like the foolish virgins who when Christ came like a thief in the night, they were not ready. This is a call to repentance. “Now therefore, says the LORD, turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” So rend your heart, and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness and He relents from doing harm.” [Joel 2:12-13]. I set before you today the choice of Life or Death: “For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it? Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it? But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it. See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statues, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you to possess. But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess.” [Deuteronomy 30: 11-18].

Time’s Up on Sexual Assault Against All Women Some of Hollywood’s most notable women are standing in solidarity with and providing legal support for working-class women. By Kaitlyn D'Onofrio / January 2, 2018

Kerry Washington, Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria and America Ferrera / REUTERS A group of Hollywood’s most notable women on Monday unveiled Time’s Up, a new initiative to help working-class women fight back against sexual assault. Just several months after #MeToo took the nation by storm, more than 300 actresses, directors and writers signed on to the pledge to say, “The clock has run out on sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace.” One of #MeToo’s largest criticisms was that the women coming forward to share their stories of sexual assault and harassment were primarily famous and wealthy actresses. Time’s Up seeks to equalize all victims, regardless of class, occupation or race. “TIME’S UP is a unified call for

change from women in entertainment for women everywhere,” the website states. “From movie sets to farm fields to boardrooms alike, we envision nationwide leadership that reflects the world in which we live.” The initiative kicked off on Jan. 1 and was announced in a fullpage ad in The New York Times, as well as in Spanish newspaper La Opinion, the Times reported. In addition to lending support and a voice, Time’s Up also provides monetary and legal support through the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund. The Fund is working in partnership with the National Women’s Law Center. The Time’s Up website includes an open letter that seeks equality for women in a workforce where men hold the power, as well as

Assemblyman Sebastian RidleyThomas is resigning By John Myers and Melanie Mason

Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) (Rich Pedroncelli / Associated Press) Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas abruptly announced his resignation from the California Legislature on Wednesday, citing health reasons. Ridley-Thomas, a Democrat from Los Angeles, informed Speaker Anthony Rendon (DParamount) Tuesday night. “The reason for this difficult decision is that I am facing persistent health issues,” Ridley-Thomas, 30, said in a written statement on Wednesday. “On December 18th, I underwent surgery for the fifth time this year. Although I expect a full recovery, my physicians advise that I will need an extended period of time to recuperate.” Earlier this year, Ridley-Thomas was absent from work for more than two weeks. Staff members initially said the absence was a personal leave, then said the time off was due to unspecified medical reasons. His resignation letter on Wednesday offered no additional details. “When I resume public life, I intend to remain active in civic affairs, where my passion lies,” he said in the statement released by his office. Ridley-Thomas was first elected to the Assembly in a 2013 special election. He is the son of Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. Before winning elected office at age 26, the younger Ridley-Thomas worked

as an aide for Los Angeles City Councilman Curren Price and managed a 2012 Assembly campaign in San Bernardino County. His solidly Democratic district includes the west Los Angeles neighborhoods of Westwood, Culver City, Crenshaw and Baldwin Hills. He is chairman of the influential Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee, which oversees all tax-related legislation. Ridley-Thomas is a proponent of changes in the operation of the state Board of Equalization, though his plan would have allowed the agency to ultimately retain many of its duties. A more substantial shake-up was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in June. Ridley-Thomas was the author of a bill signed into law in October giving the Los Angeles Unified School District the power to preserve some of its existing single-gender schools. He was unsuccessful, though, in an effort to stop local governments from imposing taxes on streaming video services like Netflix and Hulu. Ridley-Thomas’ departure will require a special election in 2018. He is the fourth Southern California legislator to leave office this year. The election of Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) to Congress also required a special election. The other two lawmakers— (continued in next 2 columns)

“greater representation of women of color, immigrant women, and lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, whose experiences in the workforce are often significantly worse than their white, cisgender, straight peers.” According to Time’s Up’s website: Sexual harassment is pervasive across industries, but especially in low-wage service jobs. For example, more than 25% of sexual harassment charges filed with the EEOC in the last decade came from industries with service-sector workers. 1 in 5 C-Suite leaders is a woman. Fewer than 1 in 30 is a woman of color. Research has shown that women in male-dominated occu-

pations, especially those in maledominated work contexts, are sexually harassed more than women in balanced or in femaledominated ones. From 2007 to 2016, 4% of topgrossing directors were female. Just 7 were women of color. 1 in 1,114 directors across 1,000 movies was Latina. White non-Hispanic women are paid 81 cents on the dollar compared to white non-Hispanic men. Asian women are only paid 88 cents on the dollar. Black and Hispanic women are only paid 65 cents and 59 cents on the white male dollar, respectively. “If this group of women can’t fight for a model for other women who don’t have as much power and privilege, then who can?” Shonda Rhimes, executive pro-

ducer on several successful television shows including the hit series “Scandal,” told the Times. Time’s Up also came in part in response to a letter from 700,000 female farmworkers who wrote to say they “believe and stand with” the #MeToo women. According to the Times, “Other Time’s Up members include the actresses Ashley Judd, Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon; the showrunner Jill Soloway; Donna Langley, chairwoman of Universal Pictures; the lawyers Nina L. Shaw and Tina Tchen, who served as Michelle Obama’s chief of staff; and Maria Eitel, an expert in corporate responsibility who is co-chairwoman of the Nike Foun-

dation.” Time’s Up also created the Commission on Eliminating Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace, which launched in mid-December and is headed by Anita Hill. “We will be focusing on issues ranging from power disparity, equity and fairness, safety, sexual harassment guidelines, education and training, reporting and enforcement, ongoing research and data collection,” Hill said in a statement at the time according to the Hollywood Reporter. “It is time to end the culture of silence. I’ve been at this work for 26 years. This moment presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to make real change.”

A special election date has not yet been set for Dababneh’s seat. “My colleagues and I wish Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley-Thomas all the best going for-

ward as he deals with his health challenges,” Rendon said in a statement. “The Assembly will continue to assist the residents of the 54th Assembly District until a new assemblymember is seated.” This post was updated with comment from Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and more information about special elections. Gary Hindes, a Fannie Mae Shareholder, Says if a Future Draw from Treasury Happens, It Should be Considered "A Return of Stolen Money" National News

NEW YORK, Jan. 2, 2018 / PRNewswire/ -- Amid recent press reports that, because of the reduction of the corporate income tax rate which took effect yesterday, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac may require a one-time Treasury draw, Gary Hindes, who is a shareholder of both companies, says any such payments by Treasury should be characterized as "a return of stolen money". On September 6, 2008, the federal government seized Fannie and Freddie (the "GSEs") and placed them into conservatorship. "The original takeover wasn't the 'bailout' it purported to be; it was a stick-up," Hindes asserts, pointing to the fact that while both companies had recently been incurring losses due to the housing downturn, they still had the highest capital ratios in their histories, were flush with cash, and had successfully tapped the public securities markets just three days earlier, selling $5.7 billion of bonds rated AA+ by S&P and AAA by Fitch. The debt was unsecured, and the offering was oversubscribed. Shortly after seizing control and ousting their CEOs, the Federal Housing Finance Agency ("FHFA"), purporting to act as conservator, ordered the companies to book several non-cash accounting charges, ultimately

resulting in Treasury's purchasing $187 billion of preferred shares (bearing a 10 percent dividend rate) so they could maintain a positive net worth. (AIG and the banks which received federal assistance under the Troubled Asset Relief Program would be charged half that.) By the summer of 2012, however, the housing market had turned around, the accounting entries had to be reversed, and Fannie and Freddie suddenly became massively profitable. Within days of the announcement of robust second quarter earnings, the conservator agreed to change Treasury's 10 percent coupon to a new dividend rate equal to 100 percent of the companies' net worths – in perpetuity. By the end of the current quarter, it is estimated that the government will have received over $100 billion more from the GSEs than the $187 billion it provided them. But the terms of the agreement struck between FHFA and Treasury mandate that none of the $287 billion can be used to retire Treasury's preferred shares. Hence, the government's position is that the two companies will continue to owe $187 billion – and must give it all their profits for the rest of time. "It was a mafia-type 'loan' from the beginning," Hindes says. (continued on page 8)

(Reuters) — Jay-Z released a music video on Friday that features the rapper addressing the pain of infidelity as he appears in a confessional booth opposite his wife Beyoncé. Set partly in a church and also featuring the couple’s 5-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, the “Family Feud” video pays tribute to family ties and female empowerment. “We all lose when the family feuds,” Jay-Z sings. “A man that don’t take care of his family can’t be rich.” The video is the latest from Jay-Z’s hit album “4:44,” in

which he responds to allegations of cheating revealed by Beyoncé in her 2016 Grammy-winning album “Lemonade.” It briefly shows an unidentified couple having sex, until the woman stabs the man in the back. Within an hour of its release, the video was the top trending item on Twitter. Jay-Z, 48, confirmed in a New York Times interview in November that he had been unfaithful to Beyoncé earlier in their nine-year marriage. NAACP Condemns Racist Remarks by TV Anchor Mocking Sean Combs' Plans to Purchase NFL Team Local/National News

BALTIMORE, MD (December 28, 2017) - The NAACP issued the following statement regarding KRON-TV anchor Henry Wofford's use of racist stereotypes to insult and belittle Sean "Diddy" Combs' interest in purchasing the Carolina Panthers NFL team. "Wofford's comments were an insult not only to Mr. Combs but to all men of color who despite high levels of achievement and accomplishment are marginalized according to ugly racist stereotypes of Black men and are utterly unacceptable," said Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO. "A late apology does little to negate Mr. Wofford's harmful words- and his co-anchor Darya Folsom's supportive laughter - or address environments where this type of stereotyping is acceptable. "The NFL faces a severe racial divide between players and executives that has contributed to a culture of intolerance towards racial justice priorities and where the protesting of police brutality draws scorn rather than support. Rather than mock, we should all promote individuals like Mr. Combs who seeks to push the NFL away from a plantation mentality and open its ownership ranks up to diversity." "According to University of Central Florida professor Richard Lapchick's 2017 "Racial and Gender Report Card" for the NFL, Black players make up roughly 68 percent of NFL teams, but there are zero Black owners or presidents across the league. The racial divide applies

to other positions of power as well: the vast majority of head coaches, assistant coaches, general managers, vice presidents, and game officials are white as well. "Wofford's comments also distressingly echo intolerant statements made in October by NFL team owners, Jerry Jones and Bob McNair. Mr. Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, made tone-deaf, misguided comments threatening to bench any players on his team who chose not to stand for the national anthem. Two weeks later, during a landmark meeting between players and owners, Houston Texans owner McNair was quoted as saying, "We can't have the inmates running the prison." McNair's nasty remarks were made utterly without regard to the problematic nature of his "owner" title or the criminal justice concerns fueling players' protests. "The NAACP refuses to accept NFL executives or TV personalities using their platforms to fuel and promote racist stereotypes." About the NAACP Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. seen as an apology to his wife. The couple, one of the richest and most influential in the music industry, has reconciled and Beyoncé gave birth to their twins in June. Heavy on symbolism, the eight-minute-long “Family Feud” video shows the musician walking into a church holding the hand of a whiteclad Blue Ivy and taking a seat in the confessional booth. Beyoncé, dressed in a black, priestess-like robe, watches silently from a pul-

pit and later sits listening on the other side of the confessional screen. Directed by filmmaker Ava DuVernay, the video also envisions a future in which a grown-up Blue Ivy and other women of color, portrayed by actresses Mindy Kaling, Rosario Dawson, America Ferrera, Thandie Newton and Niecy Nash, appear to rule the world. Jay-Z has a leading eight nominations for the Grammy Awards in January, including the top prizes of best album, song and record of the year.

New California Laws of Interest – 2018...continued from page 1 tice of Inspection, (2) provide a copy of the Notice to an affected employee upon reasonable request, and, (3) give each affected employee and the collective bargaining representative (if applicable) a copy of inspection results and written notice of the employer’s and employee’s obligations arising from the inspection within 72 hours of receiving the results. An employer that fails to follow notice requirements can be fined between $2,000-$5,000 for a first violation and $5,000 and $10,000 for each subsequent violation. 7. SB 396 – Addition to Harassment Prevention Training Topics The supervisor harassment training provided every two years (for employers with 50 or more employees) must now include a discussion of harassment based on gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. This law also requires employers to display a poster on transgender rights to be developed by the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. 8. SB 306 – Labor Commissioner’s Authority Ex-

panded for Retaliation Claims This law allows the Labor Commissioner to: (1) investigate an employer without a complaint from an employee, (2) obtain a court order prohibiting an employer from firing or disciplining an employee even before completing its investigation or determining retaliation has occurred, and, (3) penalize an employer up to $100 per day (up to a maximum of $20,000) for willful refusal to comply with an order to reinstate or restore an employee or an order to post a notice to employees. 9. AB 1701 – Increased Liability for Construction Contractors For certain private construction contracts entered after January 1, 2018, this law imposes liability onto the general contractor for any unpaid wages, benefits or contributions that a subcontractor owes to a laborer who performed work under the contract. The general contractor is authorized to request payroll records from subcontractors to confirm that wages and other benefits or contributions are being made.

Gary Hindes, a Fannie Mae Shareholder, Says if a Future Draw from Treasury Happens, It Should be Considered "A Return of Stolen Money"...continued from page 7 "What responsible board of directors – or in this case, a 'conservator', no less – would borrow $187 billion and agree that no matter how much money they repay the lender, not a dime can be applied towards principal? I mean, who does that? And here's a reality check for you: who borrows that kind of money and pays it all back in just four years? Answer: someone who never needed it in the first place. It was 'cookie jar accounting'." Under the terms of the FHFA/ Treasury deal, both companies

were to have seen their capital drained down to zero by year-end 2017. However, on December 21, Treasury agreed to allow each company to maintain $3 billion in capital. Everything above that will be swept to the government – in perpetuity. "The idea all along was to saddle them with a concrete life preserver so that they could not 'escape, as it were'," Hindes said, quoting from an August 18, 2012 White House email to a Treasury official. "And so far, it's worked."
