The author, pictured here, is Rodney Lofton of Mobile, Alabama. Rodney voted for the first time in 2018 after having his rights restored. I currently work four days a week at the First Christian Church in Mobile, Alabama as part of the Second Chance Program – and I am proud to say today that I am a voter. But it wasn’t always this way. Although I am 49-years old, a veteran that served four years in the military (in Jacksonville, Florida), and have been living in Mobile for 32-years, I had my voting rights taken away from me. Before I was stripped of my rights because of a conviction back in 2015, I didn’t vote. A lot of minorities, particularly people in the black community here in Mobile do not vote for a variety of reasons. People feel disconnected from the political process and many are confused about who can and can’t vote. Many people here think that a crime disqualifies them from voting, even misdemeanors. The

And when you think of strong women, you always have to include Michelle Obama. The former First Lady is seen not only as a beacon of hope for many, but a perfect example of what being a strong Black woman is. And Mrs. Obama is raising strong Black women as well in her daughters. But if you talk to her, she’ll say everything she is, is a result of her own mom, Marian Robinson. On her kids: “Being a mother has been a masterclass in letting go,” Obama said. “Try as we might, there’s
only so much we can control. And, boy, have I tried – especially at first. As mothers, we just don’t want anything or anyone to hurt our babies. But life has other plans.” Allowing daughters Malia, 21, and Sasha, 18, to forge their own identities while growing up in the White House was a lesson she and former President Barack Obama learned during his two terms. “As a younger woman, I spent too much time worrying that I wasn’t achieving enough, or I was straying too far from what I thought was the prescribed path,” she said. “What I hope my daughters will realize a little earlier is that there is no prescribed path, that it’s OK to swerve, and that the confidence they need to recognize that will come with time.”
“When Malia and Sasha were newborns, Barack and I could lose hours just watching them sleep. We loved to listen to the little sounds they’d make – especially the way they cooed when they were deep into dreaming … But there is something so magical about having a baby in the house. Time expands and contracts; each moment holds its own little eternity.” On her mom: “The mother that I am today is a direct result of Marian Robinson,” said the 56-year-old. “My mom is one of the smartest people with just plain old common sense. The thing she always said that I do remember is that, she told me and my brother, ‘I wasn’t raising children. I was
raising adults.’” Obama says her mom always treated she and Craig like the adults she wanted them to be, and she never belittled them in conversation because of their age. “She always talked to us like we had sense,” she added. “She never used baby talk. She would ask you to…explain yourself. She would include you in big grown up conversations. There was never anything that she wouldn’t talk to us about.” Robinson, who lived with the Obamas during their White House years, shares a close relationship with her daughter. Asked in an interview in November what about Obama made her proudest, Robinson answered, “When I grow up I would like to be like Michelle Obama.”

Transformation is something the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior was in pursuit of. He was seeking to fulfill his God given dream to help lead all people to the promise land of true brotherhood. On this national holiday we observe the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., a drum
major who followed the drumbeat of a different drum. He did not follow the world’s cadence of anger, discord and violence but chose to operate in the unforced rhythm of God’s grace to take a stand against racism, militarism, injustice and poverty. He sought to serve others in his quest to achieve equality in civil and economic rights for Black Americans, along with a demand for criminal justice reforms. In 1963, I remember as a child sitting at home in Hagerstown,

state has not put much effort into educating citizens about this. But in September 2018, I was approached by Ellen Boettcher of the Alabama Voting Rights Project, which is a partnership between the Campaign Legal Center and Southern Poverty Law Center. She told me that not all convictions deny you of the right to vote. Mrs. Ellen gave me the paperwork and walked me through the rights restoration process. I got a voter registration card in the mail and cast a ballot in November’s elections – for the first time in my life. Even after Mrs. Ellen helped me out, I almost couldn’t vote. On Election Day, my truck broke down. The pastor at First Christian Church helped me get to the polls by giving me a ride. By giving me a ride to the polls, it encouraged me because it showed that someone had my back and cared that I voted.
Campaign Legal Center and Vote.org Join Forces to Educate People with Past Felony Convictions About Their Voting Rights WASHINGTON - Campaign Legal Center (CLC) will partner with Vote.org to reach millions of Americans with past felony convictions by increasing their access to information about their voting eligibility – in time for 2020 presidential primary voter registration deadlines. Vote.org is one of the top voter registration and turnout organizations in the country. CLC’s website, RestoreYourVote.org, provides well-researched, state-specific information and resources to guide people with past felony convictions and help them take the steps needed to restore their rights. “Our democracy works best when all eligible citizens can vote without barriers, and those who have paid their debt to society deserve a second chance,” said Danielle Lang, co-director of voting rights and redistricting at CLC. “While many states have some restriction on voting rights for people with felony convictions, most states restore the right to vote to citizens after they complete their sentences. In fact, up to 18 million Americans with past felony convictions could vote today, they just may not realize it because felony disenfranchisement laws in every state can be confusing. In order to have an active electorate, you must have an informed electorate
that knows its rights. Our partnership with Vote.org guarantees we will reach more eligible voters with this information in time for the 2020 presidential primary registration deadlines.” When people with past felony convictions visit Vote.org, they will now be directed to CLC’s RestoreYourVote.org to understand if they can vote. And when eligible voters visit RestoreYourVote.org, they’ll be prompted to use Vote.org’s bestin-class tools to register to vote and those who do register will be sent Vote.org’s proven election reminders and get-out-the-vote outreach. “We’re thrilled to partner with Campaign Legal Center’s Restore Your Vote project to reach this important and often neglected segment of our electorate,” said Sarah Jackel, general counsel at Vote.org. “We know that in order to have a more representative electorate, we have to ensure that all eligible citizens – particularly those who have been historically disenfranchised and remain underrepresented in our electorate – can register and vote without informational barriers. Program In 2020-2021 Educational News San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) offers parents of students who will attend middle school next school year several options. Students may attend their home school or they may apply to attend one of these very successful and specialized programs: Richardson PREP HI Middle School, Rodriguez PREP Academy Middle School, or the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Middle Years Program at Chavez Middle School. Students must meet all eligibility criteria to apply. All applications to participate in these programs for the 2020–2021 school year must be completed and postmarked on or before January 30, 2020. Applications may also be dropped off before 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at the SBCUSD Secondary Education Department, 4030 Georgia Boulevard in San Bernardino. Richardson PREP HI’s Academic Magnet Program is highly individualized, focusing on student achievement, socialemotional growth, and leadership. As a result, Richardson has earned a Gold Ribbon School
award and a National Blue Ribbon award. Students attending this school are not placed according to attendance boundaries. Eligible students must apply to attend Richardson PREP HI for grades six, seven, and eight. Rodriguez PREP Academy serves students in grades four through eight with a curriculum and educational philosophy structured to ensure all students are held to high expectations. Rodriguez was named a California Distinguished School in 2011 and its students have consistently scored above state targets on standardized tests. Fourth- and fifth-grade students attend Rodriguez based on the school’s attendance boundaries. However, eligible students must apply to attend in grades six, seven, and eight. Chavez Middle School offers the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program, which showcases a world-renowned education with the potential to earn an I.B. Diploma. The I.B. San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) Positive Youth Development Department is working to make sure students have safe routes to school, so that they are as safe walking to and from school as they are when they arrive at school or home. Join the Positive Youth Development team, as well as students, parents, and staff from Roosevelt and Henry Elementary Schools for the January 28 Operation Safe Routes 2 School Walk. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. at Roosevelt Elementary School, 1554 North Garner Avenue in San Bernardino. The group will depart promptly at 7:45 a.m. to designated stops on common
routes students use to walk to Roosevelt and Henry Elementary Schools. Participants will walk with students and parents back to Roosevelt Elementary School. “Our goal is to empower parents and students by promoting health, wellness and safe paths to school,” said Marlene Bicondova, director of Positive Youth Development. “By walking the routes our students take, we can catalogue the obstacles they face, such as broken sidewalks or unsafe intersections. African American Voters Support Paid Family Leave Expansion Governor Newsom’s 2020-21 Budget Unveils Both Policy Issues and Proposed Solutions Community Education News
Sacramento, CA – January 16, 2020 – A new public opinion poll conducted by Change Research demonstrates that California voters strongly support the expansion of Paid Family Leave which was recently proposed by the Newsom Administration. The online poll, funded by First 5
California, reveals that African Americans voters exhibit strong awareness of the 15-year old program (81 percent) and that being able to take time off to care for family members is important to them (78 percent). Yet, a (continued in next 2 columns)
African American Voters Support Paid Family Leave Expansion...continued staggering low number (6 percent) have actually ever applied for the program. As a critical and bold first move, Governor Newsom’s 2020-21 Budget Proposal includes measures to provide universal job protection for California workers who access Paid Family Leave. A large majority (84 percent) of African Americans polled were not aware that not all employees have job protection during Paid Family Leave. More than half of those polled (56 percent) found it an extremely important issue that 25 percent of California workers are not eligible for job protection bonding leave for various reasons outside of their control. California’s Paid Family Leave program supports workers who take time off to bond with a new child or care for a seriously ill family member. The insurance program, created in 2004 is funded by employee payroll deductions and was the first in the nation, to acknowledge that bonding time with a parent gives a newborn baby their best chance at good health and future success. Use of Paid Family Leave is associated with higher rates of breastfeeding and improvements in overall child health, along with reduced rates of infant deaths. The Governor’s Task Force identified low payments and lack of job protection as the primary
reasons California families are missing out on benefits that they pay for. With workers only being paid 60 or 70 percent of what they usually earn during Paid Family Leave, it can be hard for many families to cover basic monthly bills. On top of that, a lack of job protection means that a worker could lose their job or be retaliated against for taking leave. “We are thrilled that the Governor agrees that strong families need strong Paid Family Leave policy, and that voters are in turn ready to make expansion a reality,” said Erin Gabel, Chief Deputy Director at First 5 California and Paid Family Leave Task Force Appointee. Toward this end, the Legislature and the Governor worked together to add an additional two weeks of benefits to each Paid Family Leave claim, effective July 1, 2020. To better address barriers to access and improve upon California’s Paid Family Leave policy, the Task Force has developed a longer term, step-bystep plan with a phased approach. Highlights from the plan include job protection for all workers, expanding benefits from 6 to 12 weeks, and increasing wage replacement from 60 percent or 70 percent to 75 percent or 90 percent, depending on regular annual earnings.

Much To Celebrate On National Day Of Racial Healing Dr. Gail C. Christopher As communities celebrate the National Day of Racial Healing, the stage is being set to continue the monumental change underway. New converts inspired by today’s celebration, proclamations and actions can join others already taking massive steps: On this National Day of Racial Healing let’s celebrate the progress towards rejecting the belief in a hierarchy of human value that fuels racism, xenophobia and religious bias. Even as loud voices and despicable acts across the globe spew bigotry and division, what I also see is a growing understanding of our common human ancestry and interconnectedness, the components for a just society where everyone has equal value. Rose-colored glasses? Not really. At this moment, the mobilization of an array of individuals, organizations and establishments is creating historic opportunities for a societal change that will impact communities. People are relating to one another with greater empathy, compassion and a willingness to challenge the status quo, as they strive for a fairer and more just society. To-be-sure, there are many threats to unity that must be overcome. But what we must recognize is that it is happening! #RxRacialHealing, a movement launched with five organizations — Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU), American Public Health Association, Community Action Partnership, National Collaborative for Health Equity and Ntianu Center for Healing and Nature – is inspiring progress. Our objective is to mobilize a critical mass of people across the United States committed to healing the racial wounds of the past while seeking an end to racism, inequities and injustices that plague communities of color.
·AACU has partnered with higher education institutions to establish Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Centers that are preparing the next generation of strategic leaders and thinkers to break down racial hierarchies and dismantle the belief in the hierarchy of human value. AACU hopes to develop at least 150 self-sustaining, community-integrated Campus Centers that move to erase structural barriers to equal treatment and opportunity on campuses, in our communities and across the nation. ·The American Library Association (ALA) sponsors a Great Stories Club (GSC), where libraries, community partners and lowincome teenage audiences engage in reading and discussing theme-related books and participating in programs led by a racial healing practitioner. Local communities engage in racial healing and change efforts that address inequities linked to historic and contemporary beliefs in racial hierarchy. It also seeks to bridge embedded divides and generate the will, capacities and resources for achieving greater equity and healing, particularly in the lives of young adults facing personal challenges such as detention, incarceration, addiction, academic probation, poverty and homelessness. ·The American Academy of Pediatrics has valiantly stepped up and filled in the huge gap created when the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) didn’t include mental and physical harm from (continued in next 2 columns)
Renewing Martin Luther King’s Dream by Renewing Our Minds...continued from page 1 Bernice King, has followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming an ordained minister and continues his legacy. She believes that her dad’s dream for his children to be judged by the content of their character has, in many ways, become a reality. She says, “new generations of people have benefited greatly because of the dream but we still have more work to do.” King recently talked to me about her reflections of her father. Her dad’s incredible contribution to the world, she explained, is a result of his extraordinary faith in God. As I talked with her, she told me that everything her daddy did, came out of his personal commitment to Jesus Christ. King recalls how her dad’s deep faith helped him overcome the pressures from leading the nonviolent struggle for Civil Rights, particularly when the burden became too heavy to bear: “I remember in the beginning when he was about to give up because he got a call that threatened to blow up his home where my mom and my sister were. He was in the kitchen and just before midnight, he told God; I’m at the end of my powers. I’m just down here trying to do right. Why do I have to deal with all of these evil and wicked people? Why are people so meanspirited? Why can’t people understand goodness and the good works we’re trying to do? Why is there so much hate?” King continued that her dad had grown weary and felt he could not continue; he was at the end of his rope. She explained to me; “It was at that point that he said he heard the voice of God say; “Martin Luther King, Junior! Stand up for justice! Stand up for righteousness! And I will be with you until the end.” Essentially, Dr. King went through what I refer to as a “Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane” moment. King was facing the very real threat of death for
seeking to do what was right in the eyes of God. He knew in the eyes of man, if he would continue to carry his cross of love for humanity, the very depravity of mankind could crush him and his family. But from that encounter with God in his kitchen, his extraordinary faith compelled him to keep moving forward with his noble cause, even in the face of death. Scripture tells us when we encounter adversity as King surely did, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. Therefore, we do not lose heart.” Of her daddy’s accomplishments, Bernice humbly says, “It’s emotional to know that you’re connected to a man who had such a great impact on this world. It’s a humbling experience to know that he’s my dad.” Dr. King, a dedicated Baptist minister with brilliant oratory skills, the academic prowess of a scholar, and the wisdom of a prophet, faithfully and courageously challenged America to embrace his dream of a better, stronger and united America. I asked Bernice how we have gone astray in fulfilling that dream. “It goes back to economics and spirituality. Those two issues I think are very critical. And the whole fervor of materialism in our society and self-centeredness has taken us away. And so, instead of people focusing on God first and everything else next, we’ve reversed those priorities. So, our values and our priorities are off.” She adds; “Daddy talked about this in 1967. He forewarned that if we’re not careful, we will become a “thing” oriented society and not “people centered” and all of these different crises are going to (continued in last 2 columns)
Much To Celebrate On National Day Of Racial Healing...continued racism when the CDC acknowledged other social determinants of health impacting the quality of life for Americans - economic stability, education, social and community context, health and healthcare, and neighborhood and environment. The organization of 67,000 pediatricians, which is committed to optimal physical, mental and social health and well-being for infants, children, adolescents and young adults, issued a policy statement declaring that “racism is a social determinant of health” with a profound impact on the health status of children, adolescents, emerging adults and their families. ·The National Association for the Education of Young Children declared last spring that all children have the right to equitable learning opportunities that help them achieve their full potential as engaged learners and valued members of society. “Thus, all early childhood educators have a professional obligation to advance equity,” their statement said. “They can do this best when they are effectively supported by the early learning settings in which they work and when they and their wider communities embrace diversity and full inclusion as strengths, uphold fundamental principles of fairness and justice, and work to eliminate structural inequities that limit equitable learning opportunities.” These efforts underscore the need for Americans of all races, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic standings to come together and heal the wounds of the past, and move forward col-
laborating on how to enhance the quality of life in their communities. Just as we praise the National Day of Racial Healing, we also celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday and the many words of wisdom he left us. Dr. King believed that division and separation harm not only communities, cities and individuals, but threaten the entire nation. If Dr. King were alive today, I believe he would cite the extraordinary power of the misinformation and fake-news widely distributed online and on social media platforms as the greatest barrier to national unity. The algorithms that drive these platforms feed on our biases fueling extremism, anti-Semitism and hate. As a visionary leader, Dr. King would champion regulation and oversight of this rapidly exploding industry that values profit over principled responsibility. Just as Dr. King would applaud the National Day of Racial Healing, I see him calling the alarm on the greatest threat to actualizing the Beloved Community he envisioned. Dr. Gail C. Were he living today, Dr. King would listen to politicians, civil rights and faith leaders agitate bloviate, instigate and aggravate. Then he would seek to elevate, motivate and demonstrate God’s view for healing the painful wounds of the past and bridge the deep divide with the bonds of reconciliation. In 1963, as he sat in a Birmingham jail, he wrote about becoming an extremist to deal with the extreme issues of hate and division. He advised Americans to become more like Jesus as an
extremist in love — “your enemies, bless them that curse you, pray for them who despitefully use you.” His daughter says, “One of the most important traits in unconditional love is the capacity to forgive. It’s very easy to become bitter. It’s very easy to become angry. It’s very easy to want to take revenge or retaliation. We must have the capacity to have the mentality that says by destroying them; part of me is being destroyed because they’re part of my humanity. “My dad lost his life but look at what the world has gained. Even though he didn’t make it to see that Promised Land he talked about and everybody hasn’t made it to this Promised Land he talked about but there are people that are benefiting from the life and ultimate sacrifice that he made.” Reflecting on King’s legacy, we would serve ourselves well if we could follow his example of spiritual depth, courageous leadership and unselfish service. Like King, we must seek transformation by the renewing of our minds. Let us remember that Dr. King did not conform to the culture of hate but followed the pattern of love. Research shows people who burn about 2,000 calories a week can increase the body’s cells that are more sensitive to insulin. This increased insulin sensitivity means that the body can better regulate blood sugar levels without releasing too much insulin over time. To burn 2,000 calories in one week, you need to burn 400 calories each day for 5 days a week. You can do this by walking or jogging for 40 minutes, strength training for an hour, 30 minutes ofhigh-intensity interval training or 1 hour of yoga. The key is to exercise and challenge your body often, to reap the diabetesfighting benefits.
Carbohydrates aren’t usually the first thing that comes to mind when you think of culprits for diabetes. However, carbohydrates break down in the body as sugar. It’s widely known that you can get sugar from fructose (fruits) glucose (sugar), or lactose (dairy). But you can also get sugar from starches (carbs), which includes bread, corn, potatoes, grains, and cereals. All carbohydrates, whether they start out as starches or sugars, can raise your blood sugar levels and lead to insulin resistance, and ultimately diabetes. For this reason, watching your carb intake throughout the day can help you stabilize your blood sugar levels and reduce your risk for diabetes over time.

High cholesterol is one of the major risks for heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 American adults have high cholesterol. The good news is, you can improve your odds of preventing heart disease by managing your cholesterol levels. And one of the best ways to manage cholesterol levels is by following a hearthealthy diet. Fiber, unsaturated fat, and plant sterols and stanols
are the main components of a heart-healthy diet that have been shown to decrease cholesterol. Dietary fiber is the indigestible part of any plant food, including the leaves of vegetables, fruit skins, and seeds. Foods rich in soluble fiber include oat bran, oatmeal, amaranth, barley, beans, lentils, peas, rice bran, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, strawberries and apple pulp, and flax seeds. Unsaturated fats. Eating unsaturated fats instead of saturated fats can help lower your LDL cholesterol. Most vegetable oils that are liquid at room temperature have unsaturated fats. There are two kinds of unsaturated fats— monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Monounsaturated fats are found mostly in vegetable oils such as canola, olive, and peanut oils, and in whole olives, avocados and peanuts. Monounsaturated fats are often called heart-healthy fats because they don’t cause increased cholesterol levels. Polyunsaturated fats are found mostly in vegetable oils such as safflower, sunflower, corn, and flaxseed. Naturally occurring sterols and stanols are heart-healthy compounds found in many fruits,
vegetables, and grains. These compounds lower total and LDL cholesterol levels by reducing the absorption of cholesterol from the digestive tract. There is evidence that eating or drinking 2g of sterols or stanols per day may reduce your risk of heart disease. However, most natural sources of these compounds contain only trace amounts, which means you would have to consume massive amounts to have any effect on your cholesterol. For that reason, food companies add these compounds to foods like margarine and orange juice. One tablespoon of Benecol® margarine has 1 gram of plant stanols and 8 ounces of Minute Maid Heartwise® orange juice contains 1 gram of plant sterols. While decreasing overall cholesterol is important, research has found a strong link between a healthy heart and an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “Good”) cholesterol. HDL cholesterol helps protect against heart disease, by removing excess cholesterol from the blood and carrying it to the liver, where it can be excreted. Your HDL concentration can be improved through exercise, acquiring and maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, niacin supplementation, and an increase in omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon, albacore tuna, herring, and mackerel are rich in omega3s. Walnuts, almonds and ground flax seeds are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

FEMA Funds Earthquake Safety for Los Angeles Hospital Oakland, Calif. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded $1.7 million to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and the City of Los Angeles to ensure Good Samaritan Hospital’s Emergency Department can deliver life-saving services after a major earthquake. As a first-tier hospital in the National Disaster Medical System, Good Samaritan’s emergency staff are trained to receive and treat victims of mass casualty events, such as a large-scale disaster. But violent shaking from an earthquake can damage essential medical equipment and critical support systems needed to treat survivors. To alleviate this concern, nonstructural bracing and anchoring of medical equipment, communications hardware, and supporting infrastructure is essential to ensure post-earthquake operations. Project funds will go to the installation of bolts, straps, anchors, hangers, and similar reinforcements to guarantee Good Samaritan continues to provide critical services to surrounding communities in their greatest time of need. The $2.3 million project will be funded by a $1.7 million Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) award from FEMA, with non-federal sources covering the remaining $600,000. FEMA’s HMGP helps states, territories, federallyrecognized tribes, local communities and certain private, non-profit organizations become more resilient to potential infrastructure damage and reduce future disaster costs. In the past 30 years, FEMA has invested more than $1.3 billion to reduce disaster risk in California.

California Black News Brief: Stories to Watch – Week Beginning 1/20/2020 By California Black Media Staff Unemployed Californians With No Children Could Lose Food Stamps Last week, the state of California joined 13 other states — as well as New York City and the District of Columbia — in a lawsuit filed against a new Trump Administration food stamp policy scheduled to take effect April 1. The federal government rule will require all “able-bodied” recipients of food stamp benefits between the ages of 18-49, who do not have children, to work at least 20 hours a week or enroll in a vocational training program to be eligible for low-income food assistance. The federally-funded food assistance program is known as CalFresh in California. “No one should have to choose between a hot meal and paying their rent,” said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. “But this latest Trump Administration attack on lowincome Americans will force them to do just that. The other 40 counties with more stable economies will be impacted immediately. “Yet again, the Trump Administration has failed to offer any legitimate evidence to justify decisions that have real consequences for the health and well-being of our residents,” Becerra said. “Together with our partners all across the country, we’re fighting back and we’re confident the law is on our side.”

California Black News Brief: Stories to Watch – Week Beginning 1/20/2020...continued Last week, a task force Gov. Newsom appointed made an aggressive new policy recommendation: Slap legal sanctions on local governments that fail to reduce homelessness by supporting the development of shelters and other housing options for people without permanent homes. The 13-member Council of Regional Homeless Advisors — led by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas — wants legislators to amend the California Constitution to make the policy legal and enforceable. They want to present it to voters as a statewide ballot measure in November. For the policy to be effective, it would need to have some teeth, Steinberg says. “We’ve tried moral persuasion. We’ve tried economic incentives,”he told the Los Angeles Times. “But all of it’s optional. Why should this be optional? It shouldn’t be. It mustn’t be. Thousands of people are dying on the streets, and people are telling us this is a priority.” Members of the governor’s task force have not outlined exactly what the sanctions would look like, but they could include cities and counties losing control over how they spend state funds locally. Gov. Newsom says he supports the general concept but would like to see it tested in a pilot program first. “It is a tectonic shift in the way we’ve done things. I’ve learned — and you’ve probably heard me say this — there is an old wonderful African proverb that says ‘if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together,’” Newsom said last week in Grass Valley as he toured housing facilities for the homeless. The proposal comes just after the governor proposed about $1.4 billion in new funding in his 2020-21 budget to fight homelessness. An estimated $640 billion from last year’s budget is expected to flow into local government coffers within the next couple of months, too, to support local homelessness and affordable housing initiatives. In California, there are more homeless people than any other state in the nation. And from 2018 to 2019, the state’s homeless population jumped by more than 16 percent to about 151,000 people, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Urban California Could Start Looking More Like Some East Coast Cities California, known for cities and towns with sprawling neighborhoods of single family homes with yards, typically built with short driveways, could experience a significant architectural shift. That’s if a bill making its way through the legislature, SB 50, is passed this year. Imagine many more walkable neighborhoods, much like some East Coast cities. Think clusters of mid-rise apartment buildings, condos and multi-unit complexes constructed along public transportation lines and built up above local shops, restaurants and other businesses. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), proposes new height limits and lifts zoning restrictions on construction along train routes and high-frequency bus stops. It also makes provisions that would override local building restrictions, allowing developers to build higher density housing — apartment buildings and duplexes —in high-income neighborhoods where they are now rare. Supporters of the bill believe it could trigger tens of billions of dollars in new investments to some areas. They say it would also provide thousands of new jobs and help ease the housing affordability problem in the state with a fresh stock of available housing, they believe, would drive real estate prices down. The cost of housing is one of the factors contributing to the high rate of homelessness in California, where the number of individuals without a permanent place to live accounts for nearly 25 percent of all homeless people in the United States. For more than a year now, SB 50 has been sitting in the Senate Appropriations Committee, where some legislators say they expected it to be shelved until it “died” on its Jan. 31, 2020 deadline. South Coast AQMD issues violation to Delta Airlines for jet fuel release that impacted Los Angeles area schools, public Local/National News
DIAMOND BAR—The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) today issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) to Delta Airlines following a jet fuel dump on January 14, 2020 that impacted students, teachers and other members of the public in Los Angeles County. The NOV alleges that Delta Airlines caused a public nuisance in violation of the agency’s Rule 402 and California Health and Safety Code Section 41700. South Coast AQMD’s investigation was prompted by community complaints which resulted in inspectors being dispatched to several locations. Complaints regarding the exposure to the jet fuel were reported at multiple schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Cudahy Public Library, and two schools within the El Rancho Unified School District. Delta Airlines Flight 89 was headed to Shanghai, China from LAX when an in-flight emergency was declared, causing the plane to return to the airport. As part of its emergency landing, 15,000 gallons of jet fuel in the form of
mist was released into the atmosphere impacting multiple areas of Los Angeles. Once issued, NOVs can result in civil penalties. In some cases, the company can choose to implement voluntary measures to reduce emissions or otherwise prevent further violations. If no settlement is reached, a civil lawsuit may ultimately be filed in superior court. South Coast AQMD has coordinated with, among others, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the Los Angeles Unified School District and the El Rancho Unified School District. The first release is black and white, with high-resolution red color. The second reportedly contains a white core with black stripes and a high-resolution red color. Images for the third sneaker hasn’t been released, but each includes Run-DMC branding throughout, with the letters “JMJ” emblazoned along the heel. “It’s hard to find a killer when everyone’s a crook” is the moniker that describes USA Network’s newest show, “Briarpatch,” a murder mystery meets killer feminine energy and kick-a** content. The anthology series’ has a literary origin written by Ross Thomas and features the leading role as a man, but “Briarpatch” program creator Andy Greenwald had other plans, imploring veteran actress Rosario Dawson to take reign as the lead in the USA Network series. Referenced by the cast as a “modern-day murder mystery, Dawson stars as Allegra Dill, a seasoned criminal investigator who’s ready to face her fears and find out who killed her beloved sister. Returning to her roots in San Bonifacio, Texas, Dawson’s character is set to turn the town upside down with
drilling truth and a unique twist of thrill, mystery, crime and pulp fiction. In an exclusive, I asked the “Luke Cage” actress just how important this character is for her as a woman of color being casted in a lead investigative role. Know Justice. Know Peace. Amy Johnson Minister for Sexuality Education and Justice A few years ago, I posted something on my Facebook page that offended a friend from church. He responded vehemently. I requested posts on my Facebook page be respectful. He responded that my post didn’t deserve respect. Obviously, we weren’t going to resolve this online. On Sunday morning, he walked into the church sanctuary, we saw each other, and we immediately hugged in front of God and everyone. We murmured apologies to each other, realizing that though we were both “right,” we had wronged each other. What saved us was the humanity of our in-person relationship. As I write this, conflict is all around us. News updates are barely able to keep pace with the escalation between the U.S. and Iran. Harvey Weinstein’s trial has begun, while additional charges against him have been unveiled. Australia is on fire. Actors once again used an awards platform to speak about voting, the climate crisis, women’s right to choose, and privilege. Relationships are strained. Accusations are flying. Lines are being drawn. Times like this can leave us questioning our faith, wondering if peacemakers are truly blessed, and asking what we can possibly do to preserve peace. Prayer shields on full! There is a well-known phrase: “No Justice. No Peace.” Know Justice. Know Peace. It seems simple enough, but it represents a challenging call. Praying for peace is something many of us do routinely. Establishing justice requires us to
understand issues from angles that might not be familiar to us. To work for justice requires us to consistently contemplate what we don’t know, what we need to humbly and bravely consider, and what actions we need to take. It requires us to resist dehumanizing people with whom we disagree. Jesus intentionally kept company with people who were dehumanized by much of society, and he called on us to love each other—outside of our comfort zone of friends. Much of his ministry included traveling, gathering for meals, and sharing stories about how to treat each other. “Do this,” he said, “in remembrance of me.” Working for justice is an ongoing and often humbling challenge. Posturing and fingerpointing are not building blocks of peace. Diplomacy is. Gathering together to discuss how to treat each other is still the way to establish justice and peace. Justice and peace thrive when we are willing to grapple with inperson relationships. We do not have to agree with each other in all things in order to understand each other and work together for justice and peace. As we begin this new year of 2020, let us not only pray for peace but also work for justice. Let us remember that the commandment to “Love your neighbor as yourself” means none of us are free until all of us are free. And let us always be willing to struggle with our inperson relationships with every beloved child of God, in the name of justice and peace.
