We dare not fall asleep amidst the welcomed resurgence of youth and student activism who know so well the contradictions of the evils of police brutality, mass incarceration, healthcare inadequacies, unemployment and too-low wages, and failing educational systems in a nation that has an abundant concentration of wealth at the very top levels of society. I remember Dr. King’s admonition to “Stay focused on building an inclusive beloved community, and to not let evil in high places divert us from the pathway that will ensure freedom, justice and equality for all.” Today, as we acknowledge and pay tribute to Dr. King’s freedomfighting legacy, there are 47 million African Americans in the
“shithole,” racist rhetoric or arrogant actions by evil in powerful high places divert our attention and focus from what we should be doing to continue our long struggle for liberation from centuries of abject oppression, slavery, poverty and racism. Dr. King, in his final years, had to consistently remind us that our struggle was local, national and international. One of King’s most famous quotes was, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Our time has come again. Let’s unify and win more victories at the voting booths. Let’s strengthen Black-owned businesses, and our families and communities. Subscribe to and support the Black Press. We owe it to the memory and living legacy of Dr. King to strengthen and refortify all our national civil rights organizations. We should all be networking together with stronger operational unity. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has elected the new leadership of Derrick Johnson, and we all should be card-carrying members of the NAACP. The African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa has elected the new leadership of Cyril Ramaphosa, and we all should be supportive of the ANC to ensure that Nelson Mandela’s and Oliver Tambo’s legacies are carried forward to new heights in South Africa. In fact, throughout the African diaspora, we should be unifying and working together with a renewed energy, determination and vitality. Sisters and brothers standing together with mutual respect and commitment is the order of today. Keep your heads up. Put your fists back up in the air. It is movement-building time again. Frances Grice Our community has lost a great American and a wonderful citizen, mentor, and advocate for civil rights. She will be missed. On May 8, 1969 the first edition of the San Bernardino American News was published. Frances Grice appeared in that first issue. Over the years Frances appeared
in many issues of the San Bernardino American News. In the first issue Margaret Hill wrote a story about her being the guest speaker for the (NCNW) National Council of Negro Women on Sunday, May 18, 1969 at the Trader Island, located at 868 E. Highland Ave., in San Bernardino. The dinner
was to honor Mary McCloud Bethune. At the time Frances was the director of Operation Second Chance. The topic of her speech was “Today, Togetherness is Imperative.” For the past four years Frances was always in touch with me at least once every couple of weeks. She supported minority businesses, and was constantly looking for a way to help the youth within our community. She would talk about the history of San Bernardino and the part she played to help blacks fight the racist ways of some in the city. She was well versed in the government and the process to make certain things happen. My mother was one of those she recruited to join the league of mothers to protest the San Bernardino School District in order to get school bus transportation
for students on the west side of San Bernardino. She shared with me the story of how the (NAACP) Law suit that lead to a consent decree that is still in place against the San Bernardino Unified School District. The most recent active role she had was working as a consultant for San Bernardino Valley College where she was very active in trying to bring African American Contractors to the table to get work for their companies. Chris Robles, Chair, San Bernardino County Democratic Party
San Bernardino, California Christopher “Chris” Robles, the Chair of the San Bernardino County Democratic Party, was officially admonished January 9 in a letter signed by Eric Bauman, the Chair of the California Democratic Party (CDP) out of Sacramento, for working professionally for Republican candidates in a campaign to defeat Democratic candidates. Robles was admonished for having campaigned for a Republican candidate against party-endorsed Democrats in the Ontario City Council election of November, 2016. He also led a campaign to recall three popular Artesia City Councilmen, all Democrats, during the summer and fall of 2017 – a fact which has yet to be considered by the state party officers. Robles was also admonished for failing to submit the county party’s by-laws to the CDP for approval. If the CDP had previously approved the county by-laws, the county-endorsed candidates would have then been state-endorsed candidates. Robles could be expelled from the state party, not just admonished, for campaigning against state-endorsed candidates. Once expelled from the state party he would have also been expelled from the county party, leaving the office of chair vacant. A copy of the admonishment letter (#1) and the memorandum ordering the letter (#2) are attached below as PDF files. Democrats outnumber Republicans in the county 40 percent to 31 percent. Yet despite this ninepoint advantage, Republicans have won 17 races in districts dominated by Democratic registration during Robles’ time as Chair. Two of the five county supervisors are Democrats but one of them receives the majority of his financial support from Republicans and votes with them all the time. In the Fourth Supervisorial district, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 43 percent to 28 percent, former Republican Assemblymember Curt Hagman defeated popular incumbent
Democratic Congresswoman Gloria Negrete-McLeod to win the seat in 2014. Republicans hold three of the county’s four State Senator seats, five of the county’s eight Assembly seats, and a commanding majority on 17 of the county’s 24 city councils. Although three of the county’s five Congressional seats are held by Democrats, two of them are in Congressional districts with heavily Democratic areas outside the county. When Robles came to the county in September, 2012, he was elected party chair because he was so highly recommended by Bauman. But he was elected too quickly for his rate of success or his client list to be vetted, so his potential conflicts of interest were unknown at the time Robles is the owner and president of the Chino-based political consulting company Vantage Campaigns, formerly of Hacienda Heights, and the Montebellobased Pericles Group. The Vantage Campaigns website contains no identities or biographies of personnel, and calls to its listed phone number for comments from Robles have not been returned. There is no public record of Robles ever having managed a winning campaign. Several of the campaigns he has worked on have been investigated and fined by the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) because of his repeated violations. Complaints filed last year about his Artesia City Council recall campaign are now under investigation. Although many party members at first thought Robles’ professional experience would be an advantage, they have since been disappointed with his lack of political skills, lack of electoral success, personal demeanor, and failure to maintain transparency. The position of chair is a voluntary one but Robles has used it to enrich himself by promoting his own consulting business more than the county party and its candidates for office. Dinkra Stylez is the world’s first craft design firm with the mission of educating its clients about African Heritage through the creation of fun, colorful, and engaging products. The idea and inception of starting this business arose when Kalimah couldn’t find engaging resources to complete a school project on the Ancient Empires of Ghana. The research materials were very dull and boring and did not peak her interest at all. She was however very fascinated with the content she read and discovered. She wanted to ensure others would have access to the rich and inspirational history she was uncovering, but in a more fun, colorful, and engaging manner. At that moment Dinkra Stylez was born. As a kid entrepreneur, clay sculptor, and teen historian, Kalimah started her trek as a young artisan entrepreneur at the age of 6, with a lemonade stand. Growing in thought and creativity with Dinkra Stylez, she was

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — “In|Dignity,” an exhibit aimed at exploring and dismantling intolerance through the experiences of Inland Empire residents, will make its debut this month at Cal State San Bernardino’s Anthropology Museum. In|Dignity takes its title from a double entendre simultaneously reading as a single word — indignity — and two separate words — in dignity. “These two meanings capture precisely what the exhibition explores: experiences with oppression, discrimination, and prejudice, and simultaneously the pride and self-respect that we must have for ourselves and for others facing such injustices,” said director of the Anthropology Museum and exhibition co-curator Arianna Huhn. An opening reception for In|Dignity is set from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the museum, located in the university’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences building’s third floor in room SB-306. In|Dignity centers on the life experiences of Inland Empire community members, told in their own words — brought to life through audio, personal mementos and documentary photography by Thomas McGovern, CSUSB professor of art. “As a portrait photographer, I strive to reconcile what I see as an artist with how the subjects present themselves,” McGovern said. “Ultimately, it’s about creating a compelling representation of the person that suggests more than just their physical appearance.” “In collecting these stories, we offer our community the cathartic experience of sharing their hurt, anguish, frustration, despair and hope,” says Annika Anderson, exhibition co-curator and assistant professor of sociology. “By presenting the stories and experiences of our neighbors, colleagues and friends in their own words, we celebrate our community and refresh a sense of local pride, civic spirit and belonging, while also inspiring visitors to be more empathetic — which is an important tool for reducing intolerance.” It is the curators’ vision that engagement with personal stories of stigmatized and marginalized “others” will break down barriers of misunderstanding and self-defense, inspire empathy, and instill a pledge for personal and soci-
etal change. The indignities considered in the exhibition are wide-ranging and include personal experiences with ableism, androcentrism, cisgenderism, Islamophobia, racism, heterosexism, educationalism, ageism, colorism, size-ism, pro-natalism and other axes of life outside of the societal “norm.” Visitors can explore the exhibition on their own, or through its stock of evolving “concept cards,” which highlight several narratives in relation to a common topic. Kalimah’s future aspirations include, helping other young entrepreneurs fulfill their goals and dreams. She says, "It motivates me when I help other kids rise and realize their amazing potential." With a love for STEM, she is currently brainstorming ideas, in hopes of developing a business plan that will allow her to combine her love of architecture, engineering, archaeology, and food chemistry into a thriving and successful business. "There are some many cool things to learn and explore, why limit myself to just one?" Kalimah’s current projects include, organizing a youth entrepreneur summit slated to take place in August 2018, conducting workshops on youth entrepreneurship for the District of Columbia’s Department of Parks and Planning – Ladies On The Rise - Girls Empowerment program, co-conducting and serving as the official youth adviser for a monthly workshop series entitled, "Youth Entrepreneurship: The Road Map". Trump has previously said he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. A U.S. court last Tuesday ruled that DACA should remain in effect until legal challenges brought in multiple courts are resolved. “DACA is probably dead be-

Research Suggests Trump’s ‘Muslim Ban’ Produced Rare Shift in Public Opinion Far from its intended effect, the ban generated public opposition to the policy, according to a study co-authored by UCR’s Loren Collingwood By Tess Eyrich On JANUARY 12, 2018 RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 13769 on Jan. 27, 2017, effectively barring individuals from seven predominately Muslim countries from entering the United States for 90 days. Within a day of his decree, thousands of protesters flooded airports around the country in opposition to what was quickly deemed a “Muslim ban,” and by March 6, the order had been formally revoked. According to a political scientist at the University of California, Riverside, and his colleagues, visible resistance to the order in the immediate aftermath of its signing may have produced a rare shift in public opinion that resulted in mass opposition to Trump’s policy. The shift was caused by “an influx of information portraying the ban as being at odds with egalitarian principles of American identity and religious liberty,” said researchers Loren Collingwood, an assistant professor of political science at UCR; Nazita Lajevardi of Michigan State University; and Kassra A. R. Oskooii of the University of Delaware. Their findings, published last week in the journal Political Behavior, suggest the bounty of information that surfaced after the order went into effect — information that painted the ban as deeply un-American and in fact “incompatible with American values” — contributed to a broadbased increase in opposition to it. The researchers compared the results of two surveys of the same 311 people — one conducted just days before the order’s announcement, and the other in the

two weeks after. They found that among those respondents, more than 30 percent moved against the ban in the interim. Those who shifted most radically, meanwhile, were “high American identifiers.” Such respondents were shown to consider their status as Americans who belong to one nation to be a defining element of their identities. Media coverage of anti-ban demonstrations, the researchers noted, often depicted protesters “shrouded in American flags,” visually linking the concept of more inclusive immigration policies to American egalitarianism. The movement against the ban also benefited from the outspokenness of various news commentators and publications, many of whom were quick to criticize the order by characterizing it as antithetical to core American ideals. The profound response to the ban, the researchers wrote, represents “one instance in which the priming of American identity shifted citizens’ opinions toward more inclusive, rather than restrictive, immigration-related policy stances.”

API is a national trade associa-
tion that represents all facets of the oil and natural gas industry, according to the group’s website, and its membership includes “large integrated companies, as well as exploration and production, refining, marketing, pipeline, and marine businesses, and service and supply firms.” In 2015, the natural gas industry supported more than 4 million jobs across the U.S. “from production to end uses such as manufacturing,” the State of American Energy 2018 report said. “The number is expected to rise to 6 million jobs by 2040.” Gerard said that if you look at the energy industry, in general, there are still emerging opportunities for new job creation, lowcost affordable energy, and export markets. “The sky is the limit, to some degree, in our ability to expand and grow and I think that’s exciting, particularly from the job perspective side,” said Gerard. “What we’re trying to do is broaden our base particularly in
the Black community about the opportunities that are available.” That’s why Gerard has committed to speaking to students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to dispel some of the myths about the petrochemical industry; some believe that many of the jobs are on oil rigs in Texas or Oklahoma. “We’ve got to find those partnerships, everything from individual students, who are just rising up to begin to consider their own careers, to small businesses to opportunities all the way up to the C-suite,” said Gerard. People who work in the oil and natural gas industry are engineers, accountants, and designers; they work in marketing, finance and transportation, Gerard said Gerard said that the Black Press can play a number roles in educating the Black community about the opportunities in the oil and natural gas industry. “We need to identify African American leaders currently in the oil and natural gas industry and profile them; let them talk about their successes, let them share their stories with others,” said Gerard. “We also have to continue our efforts to reach out and educate the community so that people just don’t think that [only a handful of people] got lucky. No, no these opportunities are for everybody.” The president and CEO of API also said that the oil and natural gas industry must do a better job with communicating a clear message about the impact of the industry on everyday life.
The 2018 State of American Energy report noted that everything from artificial heart valves and air bags to seat belts and astronaut’s space suits are made with petroleum-based products. Gerard added that the contributions of the oil and natural gas industry extend to the ubiquitous smartphones that millions of Americans use every day. “The majority of the products and the components in that smartphone come to you via petroleum products, natural gas and oil,” said Gerard. “Without natural gas and oil, you couldn’t build that smartphone the way you use it today, even down to the circuitry that makes it such a hightech instrument.” Gerard said that it’s important that African Americans turn their focus toward the oil and natural gas industry, because the career and business opportunities will only continue to grow. “We’ve got a lot of African American groups that are apart of our strategy to better understand those interests and secondarily how to communicate and educate [the Black community] about those opportunities,” said Gerard. “We just have to stay at it; we have to persevere. We can’t get frustrated after six months, and say ‘well, its not working as fast as we would like it to.’” Gerard continued: “These are long-term objectives. We’re already gaining some traction. These are generational challenges that don’t [change] overnight. We’ve got to keep pushing the understanding and the opportunity in the African American community.”

Sacramento, Calif.—Residents of Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and San Diego counties who suffered damage or losses from the recent wildfires and flooding, mudflows, and debris flows directly related to the December 2017 wildfires, can now register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The amendment to the presidential disaster declaration of January 2, 2018, made at the request of Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., now makes federal assistance available to eligible individuals and business owners in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and San Diego counties. Survivors who primarily reside in the designated counties can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 711 or Video Relay Service may call 800-621-3362. The toll-free numbers are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Applicants will be asked for the following information: Social Security number Address of the damaged primary residence Description of the damage Information about insurance coverage A current contact telephone number An address where they can receive mail Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds Disaster assistance for homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for: Rental assistance Essential home repairs Uninsured and underinsured personal property losses Other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. Low-interest disaster loans from
the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available for businesses of all sizes (including landlords), private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters. Disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries. FEMA grants do not have to be repaid. FEMA assistance is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits. Registering with FEMA is required for federal aid, even if a survivor has registered with another disaster-relief organization, such as the American Red Cross. Survivors should register even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but underinsured applicants may receive help after their claims have been settled. This is a radical shift in CMS policy that violates federal law and is part of an ideological agenda that is hostile to government assistance with health coverage. Following is the statement of Eliot Fishman, senior director of health policy of Families USA: “CMS’s decision to allow Medicaid eligibility to be based on work status is another example of the Trump administration walking away from our nation’s core values. This is the latest blow in a continuing campaign to undermine and attack the Medicaid program. “It is telling that both the Trump administration and the states proposing work require-
ments also have proposed major cuts to Medicaid that would take away coverage from millions of people. Today’s announcement isn’t about work: it is about taking away health insurance from low-income people. “Linking Medicaid’s health coverage to work status is contrary to Medicaid law. That CMS has taken it upon itself to rewrite Medicaid law under the ‘Demonstration Projects’ statute is a shocking abuse of administrative authority. It’s an almost weekly occurrence across the country. Either a nursing home or a hospital faces accusations or lawsuits over patients who develop severe bedsores that lead to extreme suffering or, in some cases, death. One week it’s a now-closed nursing home in California dealing with its third such lawsuit. Another week it’s a San Francisco hospital facing allegations that staff cuts led to an uptick in the number of fragile patients suffering from bedsores. And on yet another occasion it’s a New Jersey nursing home sued by the family of a woman who died after reportedly suffering from a bedsore that wasn’t properly monitored and cared for. For families, such situations lead to heartache and tragedy. For health facilities, they lead to costly litigation, higher treatment costs and damaged reputations. “It’s a serious concern for both nursing homes and hospitals, and it has a major impact on the bottom line,” says Nigel Parker, founder and CEO of RashEndZ Inc. (www.RashEndZ.com), a company that developed a skinaeration liner for incontinence garments that prevents and treats those rashes.
Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, affect up to 2.5 million patients annually, according to the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research. Complications include pain, scarring, infection, prolonged rehabilitation, and permanent disability. About 60,000 patients die as a direct result of pressure ulcers each year. “The patient’s well being is the primary reason this needs to be addressed,” Parker says. “But pressure ulcers also result in 17,000 lawsuits a year, so nursing homes and other health facilities are at risk of liability if they don’t do something about the problem.” Some health-care facilities have tried to address the mounting pressure-ulcer problem with better employee training and changes in procedures. Parker, an aerospace engineer, decided to tackle it from a different angle – technology. Parker first learned of the problem several years ago when his cousin, Colleen John, a neonatal ICU nurse, approached him. It is natural to look back and take stock of the past twelve months. For many, (far too many) 2017 was challenging. Personally many experienced job loss or change, health scares, the passing of loved ones, strained relationships and other life challenges. As a nation, we grappled with our growing opioid epidemic. Natural disasters devastated Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico. We began to publicly face the reality of widespread sexual harassment and violence against women. We struggled with the existential threat of nuclear war and consequences of "America First" foreign policy. U.S. policy changed dramatically as our leaders withdrew from the Paris climate accord, shut the door to immigrants and refugees, and altered our tax system to disproportionately benefit corporations and the wealthy. And then there were the tweets. The TWEETS! It is not hard to see why so many people were eager to say good-bye to 2017. And yet, this past year was not all pain and darkness. It was also a year of empowerment and advocacy. We began the year with the Women's March and ended it reflecting on the

Tyler Perry was the keynote speaker at the 25th annual 5000 Role Models of Excellence scholarship program, an organization that provides mentorship and support to at-risk young men. “But I looked at your faces coming down the aisle and I got emotional,” he told the crowd of hundreds at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day scholarship breakfast, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center. “When I saw your faces I thought, I gotta get in on this.” Perry was so inspired by the event that he was moved to write a $100,000 check from his seat on stage. He was encouraged to speak at the event by South Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who founded the program in 1993. The two hit it off after Tyler sent flowers to her office following her high-profile argument with Donald Trump after the death of Miami Gardens Sgt. La David Johnson. Johnson was a graduate of the
5000 Role Models program and a family friend of Wilson’s. As reported by the Miami Herald, earlier this month, the 5000 Role Models group awarded Johnson’s pregnant wife and two children a scholarship trust with $800,000 they had crowdfunded to pay for the children’s education. “Every time I see a young black man I think of my son,” Perry said. “He’s 3. He’s the love of my life.” Perry also shared a father and son moment he had with his toddler during a recent walk on the beach together. When his son was running and jumping to “catch up with his father” he announced that he was “following in his dad’s footsteps.” The movie mogul told his baby boy that instead of jumping to meet his father’s stride, he should hold his hand and walk beside him. At the end of their walk, Perry turned, pointed and said, “Look at your footprints, you left your own path.” That was Tyler’s message to this year’s class of 58 Wilson scholars. Perry also became an honorary member of the group during the event and was dressed in the customary red tie by fellow mentors of the program.

Advocates organized across intersecting issues of injustice like never before, and engaged in advocacy and direct action in record numbers. "Resistance" became more than a partisan position, and instead was a call to action against unjust structures and traditions. In spite of all the challenges, we found examples of hope. They were sometimes distant, and often unexpected, but we could feel it. In this season of Epiphany I am eager to find these bright spots of encouragement. In the year to come, knowing the mix of challenges and opportunity that await us, let us strive to follow the example of the Magi in the book of Matthew, who followed a Star with joy and expectation, even in the face of fear, threats, and jealousy from King Herod. Like the Magi, let us take risks and choose to resist empire for the sake of hope. Let us stick together and uplift one another when we grow weary. Let us look for those moments to be "overwhelmed with joy" (Matthew 2:10), especially in the darkest of nights.

Know that “TODAY” may be the very last time you may be exposed to the Gospel of the grace of God. Don’t blow it! “NOW,” “TODAY,” repent of your sins and accept Jesus as your Savior. For the Bible declares, “Behold, “NOW” is the acceptable time; behold, “NOW” is the day of salvation.” “NOW” is Mercy’s offer. “NOW” is the invitation from God, reaching down from Heaven. Know that the Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. [2 Peter 3:9]. “TOMORROW” you may find the door shut. “TOMORROW” may be too late. NOW, NOW, NOW! Repent of your sins, and be
forgiven. You know three passages in the [Book of Proverbs1:24-28; 27:1; 29:1] warns us that we are not to wait too late about making our decision of commitment to trust Christ as our Savior and Lord and to receive forgiveness for our sins. Don’t take a chance and think that you will have time to get saved or repent later on in life. For Hell is filling up fast with people who thought that they would repent later on in their life. Some of them, like you, had heard the Gospel: were convicted by the Holy Spirit and Word of God; and had expected to get saved “SOMEDAY.” Unfortunately, for them, their “SOMEDAY” never came. Case in point, Governor Felix, who in [Acts 24: 24-25], was privileged to hear the Gospel, and was so convicted of his need for a Savior that he actually “trembled” but what did he do? He procrastinated, he put it off. He told the Apostle Paul, “Go thy way; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.” Well, his convenient season never came. His tomorrow never arrived. He died, lost; his chance had come and gone. Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent… [Acts 17:30]. Please, be reconciled to God “NOW” before it’s too late! “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that “I have set before you life and death…; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him for He is your life and the length of your days… [Deuteronomy 30:19-20].

The California Legislative Black Caucus hosted Donna Brazile, a national political figure, at its Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast held Thursday, Jan. 11, to kick off a host of statewide marches, breakfasts and community events commemorating the life and legacy of MLK. Brazile, two-time former chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and chair of former Vice President Al Gore's presidential campaign, addressed more than 200 attendees in a speech that was layered with spirituals reflections and peppered with humor. She is also the author of the new tell-all book “Hacks,” which detailed her experience running the DNC under the hacking attack of the Russians during the 2016 election between then-candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Brazile also stressed the importance of working to realize the dream and challenging people to stir the pot. Brazil spoke candidly about her role in lobbying to make Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a national holiday. According to Brazile, King's message of hope and racial tolerance is still relevant today. "He (King) taught us to rise above hate," she said. She urged Americans not to look at the MLK holiday as just
another day off, but a way to get involved. Brazile also challenged more African-American women to run for political office, especially at the local level. "Because that's where the action is," she said. Assemblymember Chris Holden, CLBC chair, also spoke at the event. "We must always remember the rich history that surrounds MLK Day and reflect on how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King's dream," said Holden. "In a national environment where divisive rallies and demonstrations are on the rise, it's critical for African Americans to unite and stand against hatred bigotry." The breakfast also recognized a variety of statewide civil rights activists as “Unsung Heroes." "This year's ‘Unsung Heroes' are pillars in the Black community," said Holden. "They continue the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through their voices and actions." This year's Unsung Heroes are: Pamela Thornton, an advocate for fair land use operations. Joe and Ruthie Hopkins, owners/publishers of Pasadena Journal, a newspaper that serves the African American community in the San Gabriel Valley. California Democratic Party Admonishes San Bernardino County Chair...continued from page 1 Robles has offered them his business card and told them he could help them only if they would hire his company and pay him. He has manipulated the county party into contracting with his consulting company for professional services, without approval of the membership, apparently an illegal conflict of interest. There have also been expenditures made, some to Robles himself, which were not approved by the membership and he has so far thwarted every attempt at an independent audit. Robles has also been criticized for his demeanor in running party meetings like a dictator, totally controlling every aspect of the meetings with blatant disregard for the opinions and issues of the members, often yelling at them to shut up when they try to make a point from the floor. Bauman signed the letter of admonition to Robles on behalf of the other statewide CDP officers Vice-Chairs Alex GallardoRooker and Daraka Larimore-Hall, Secretary Jenny Bach, and Controller Dan Weitzman. Bauman was Chair of the Los Angeles County Party from 2001 to 2017, and Vice-Chair of the state party since 2009, before being elected state party chair last May. Gallardo-Rooker of Sacramento has been a Vice-Chair of the state party since 1997. She is the state legislative advocate for
the Communication Workers of America, and is also a member of the Democratic National Committee. Larimore-Hall was Chair of the Santa Barbara County Democratic Party for the past seven years. He is currently working on Ph.D. in Sociology at UC Santa Barbara. Bach of Sacramento is a consultant for the California Asian Pacific Islander legislative caucus. Before being elected CDP Secretary in May she served as Secretary and Parliamentarian for the California Young Democrats. Weitzman, also of Sacramento, has been a Democratic consultant and party activist for the past three decades. He works for Senate President pro-Tempore Kevin De León and is also the Principal of Daniel C. Weitzman Consulting. Although a large number of Democrats have been trying to remove Robles for almost a year, he has been more successful at obstructing their attempts than in any other action he has taken as chair. It remains to be seen how much longer he can cling to his untenable position. A majority of county party members have decided they will need a different chair to reunite the party, revitalize fundraising, and mobilize volunteers to capitalize on the increasing Democratic registration advantage and defeat Republicans in the upcoming elections.

The July 17, 2017 email from John Gore, released as part of the joint FOIA request made by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and American Oversight, confirms this reality. “We are moving forward with detailing some attorneys to initiate a Title VI investigation of a university’s admissions policy under the front office’s supervision,” Gore wrote in the email. The Justice Department’s response to the joint FOIA request, which includes the email from Acting Assistant Attorney General Gore, is available online. Justice Department Staffing Up For Its Ill-Conceived Affirmative Action Investigation In Emails Released Through Joint FOIA Request Made By Lawyers’ Committee And American Oversight, Head Of Civil Rights Division Solicits Staff For Investigation Local/National News
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice sought government attorneys on loan for its investigation into higher education affirmative action programs, an email released through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request revealed. The July 17, 2017 email from Acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore underscores that the unprecedented investigation into race conscious admissions policies is a top priority for the Civil Rights Division, marking a sharp departure from the Division’s central mission to promote equality through the rule of law. The email was released in response to a FOIA request made
by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and American Oversight. Martin's Birthday Sermon: The Negro Is Your Brother By Keith Magee
Keith McGee (TriceEdneyWire.com) - As the world pauses to honor one of the greatest African Americans, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, most conscious Americans are bowing our heads, though not in prayer. We are enraged that Donald Trump, who garnered the presidency through his "birther" inquisition, questioning President Barack Obama's legitimacy and identity, continues to display vulgar bigotry, hatred and racism. He, and the GOP, have spent his first 360 days, literally, attempting to turning around the Obama Administration's policies to support the disenfranchising of nonWhite Americans and nations. Equally, many of us are appalled by the silence from the AfricanAmerican "faith leaders" who flood the airwaves, pulpits and megachurch auditoriums with messages of deliverance, hope and prosperity in the face of this adversity and darkness. If we've ever needed "a Word" from the Lord, as a community, we sure do need it now. Yet as my grandmother would say, "you can hear a rat piss on cotton" from those leaders who have such stark messages that will free you from every defiling form of deviant, lustful, immoral and heart-wrenching sin that will send you to the hell. Dr. King was a global humanitarian, yet his primary calling was as a prophet. He used his prophetic voices to spare not and cry aloud, addressing the concerns across racial identity, leading the charge for equality for the least advantaged. King, and his contemporaries, jailed in Birmingham understood, that they weren't just wrestling against being bitten by dogs, hosed down and lynching's but there were principalities, powers, rulers of dark-
ness, spiritual wickedness in high places. And, those high places had seats that effected public and social policy. In the book, Where Have All The Prophets Gone, Marvin McMickle reminds preachers that they have no right to preach prophetic words with their fists balled up and index fingers pointing out and pointing away from themselves. I contend that preachers all need to point a finger toward themselves and examine their calling. Jesus was a prophet who came to set at liberty them that were bruised. We can't just deliver a superficial message of faith without works. Sitting in a shithole because of injustice, Dr. King pens, "The Negro Is Your Brother," commonly known as the Letter from the Birmingham Jail. About the letter, McMickle says "King preaches from the prophetic text and becomes a prophet in our midst." In the absence of any of the modern day celebrated and proclaimed apostles, (arch) bishops, and right-reverends having a prophetic word, in response to the recent Trump debacle, we will let King preach for them this Sunday morning. "Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial 'outside agitator' idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds." King refers to himself, Jesus and other great reformers as extremists. "So, the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be? Will we be extremists for hate or for love? In that dramatic scene on Calvary's hill three men were crucified. We must never forget that all three were crucified for the same crime - two were extremists for immorality. Jesus Christ, was an extremist for love and thereby rose above his environment. Perhaps the nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists." And I believe this creative extremism fused in love should (continued in next 2 columns)

Donna Fletcher, a parent advocate in Florida, says that Florida’s ESSA plan lacks important information about funding and school accountability. (Pixabay/Creative Commons) As a parent, I recognize that I am my children’s biggest advocate and I work hard to make sure that they have the best learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. When I relocated from Washington, D.C. to Florida, I struggled to find schools that were rigorous in their instruction, included strong community and parental involvement, provided a diverse selection of extra-curricular activities, and offered the support services my children needed. Eventually, I found a school that met the majority of my expectations, but that school was located in a different county. As a result, I relocated to an address within that area. With a background in education and familiarity with the District of Columbia Public Schools system (DCPS) through my older children, I constantly found myself comparing the materials being taught at my
children’s elementary school to the lessons that were taught in DCPS over 15 years earlier. To my chagrin, my younger children were lagging far behind, academically. Therefore, my search to find a more rigorous academic program led me to placing my younger children in a private, Christian-based school. However, I have found that while private schools promote a superior academic experience, in actuality, they lack more than they deliver. Academic rigor, community and parental involvement, extracurricular activities, and the passion needed to encourage the love of learning were all missing from the private school my children attended. Thus, my search continues. The new national education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), gives more power (continued in next 2 columns)
OPINION: As a Parent, I Recognize that I am My Child’s Biggest Advocate...continued back to states to determine their own academic standards, but provides several grant opportunities to ensure school districts are implementing evidencedbased interventions to improve academic achievement. Student Support and Enrichment Grants combine several programs from No Child Left Behind to improve academic achievement by providing all students with funding for improved school conditions, wellrounded learning, and efficient use of technology. Title IV, Part B of ESSA also provides opportunities for communities to expand or establish community learning centers, which provide a broad array of resources; including meaningful parent engagement. Florida has updated its academic standards in an attempt to align them with college-and-career-ready expectations twice, since 2011; the most recent update occurred in 2015. However, Florida’s ESSA plan does not explain the process through which updates have occurred. Florida does attempt to emphasize a wellrounded education by including progress in science and social studies as an indicator of school success. However, Florida fails to include progress in English Language Proficiency (ELP) as an indicator of school success and will only provide assessment instructions in English; despite a diverse student population. Furthermore, Florida does not incorporate student subgroup (race/ethnicity) data in its school grading system. Student subgroup data will only be reported on school report cards. This process does not guarantee struggling subgroups will be identified and supported. Florida proposes to use a simple A-F grading system to identify underperforming schools. For schools that do not earn a “C” grade after two years, the plan calls for the schools to close or turn over operations to a charter or an external operator. While schools are held accountable for continued failure, as a parent, I am concerned about the impact on students who are enrolled during the two-year improvement
period. Lastly, Florida does not explain how it will use the setaside Title I dollars for school improvement or how the state will encourage the equitable distribution of funds. Overall, while the plan clearly articulates its intentions, it provides little explanation for how the stated goals will be achieved. How can I, as a parent, get more involved and engaged to help advocate for my children? For my children, who are in the middle of the pack, how can they receive resources to accelerate their abilities to the next level? How does Florida’s ESSA Plan empower parents to choose higher-performing schools with very few available spots for students zoned to under performing schools? Florida’s ESSA plan is not an all-encompassing document; specifically as it relates to the lack of information regarding explanations for funding, school accountability, and amended academic standards. The consolidated state plan should be viewed as one additional resource in the search to find answers and be empowered to impact our children’s education. As a parent, I believe my goal is to support instruction received inside the classroom by fostering added learning through enriching opportunities outside the classroom. As a parent, I recognize, I am my child’s biggest advocate. The ESSA resource website created by the National Newspaper Publishers Association is a great tool for parents looking to increase their engagement within the school system. Visiting the site frequently has provided me with information, research, and the inspiration to keep pursuing my children’s best academic interest.
