Tanya Wallace-Gobern, the Executive Director of National Black Worker Center Project. Traditionally, Black History Month is a time to reflect upon, acknowledge and honor Black leaders who significantly changed and influenced America’s history. Just as it is important to honor those who came before us, it is just as necessary to acknowledge and spotlight those who are social justice leaders today. NEO is committed to lifting up the voices of African American and other advocates of color who are our grantees and partners. NEO believes that the philanthropic sector must invest in the skills and leadership capacity of those who represent the diverse communities we serve. During Black History Month, we will profile a few of the many Black leaders and
NEO partners who are making waves in social justice. This post features Tanya Wallace-Gobern, the Executive Director of National Black Worker Center Project. The National Black Worker Center Project is a fiscally sponsored project of NEO Philanthropy. Tanya Most people are familiar with the phrase, “If you are doing what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, Tanya Wallace-Gobern is one of lucky ones doing just that. As the Executive Director of the National Black Worker Center Project, she is fulfilling her dream to serve and uplift the Black community. As a criminal justice and social work major in college, Tanya
fell into an internship at the Organizing Institute of the AFL-CIO right before graduation that changed her career trajectory. Tanya climbed the ladder and continued to work in advocacy and organizing for more than 20 years, but as time went on, she felt she was getting farther and farther from her calling – making a difference in the Black community. That is until she joined the National Black Worker Center Project. The National Black Worker Center Project focuses on supporting and incubating Black worker centers, providing education about the impacts of lowwage work and unemployment in the Black community. The Center works to prevent racial discrimination in the work place. Through national convenings, supporting their local affiliates and creating campaigns and initiatives to share the Black worker’s experience, Tanya and the National Black Worker Center Project are protecting the rights of unemployed and lowwage Black workers everywhere. While working on the Project’s national “Working While Black” campaign, Tanya realized the scope of Black workers facing discrimination was much bigger than the unemployed and lowwage workers she primarily focused on. While speaking to a man who worked in film in L.A. and earned a six-figure salary, he uttered words that would stick with her: “What about the rest of us?” Tanya thought, if you believe he shouldn’t be the kind of person the National Black Worker
Center Project should also focus on, you’d be wrong. Research shows the more educated or the higher the salary, the more opportunities there are for discrimination against Black workers. Tanya is working against the discrimination itself, as well as the fallacies that once Black workers reach a particular status or salary, they no longer encounter discrimination. As a Black worker herself, Tanya knows this to be true. That’s why it’s so important to her that she, and people who look like her, are at the forefront of the movement. She understands the people she serves aren’t waiting for a savior. What they are looking for is leadership development so they can become the leaders in their own movement. Although their focus is on Black workers, Tanya is clear that the work the National Black Worker Center Project does encompasses people of all races, economic status, religion and sexual orientation. “The work doesn’t end with us. It isn’t a poor person’s issue, or a Black person’s issue, or rich person’s issue, these are worker issues.” Tanya doesn’t think she can solve this problem any time soon, but that isn’t stopping her from trying. She believes the mere existence of her organization is a win for workers everywhere. Temperatures near Gorman were at 26 degrees accompanied by strong winds GORMAN, Calif. (KABC) -After a mostly mild winter, a big chill has come to Southern California this week, with Monday being the coldest day. A winter weather and wind
advisory is in effect in some areas, with wind gusts up to 50 to 60 mph expected in the mountains and deserts. A hard freeze warning is in place for the valleys and Ventura County.
Temperatures in the mountains are expected to stay in the 20s on Monday and Tuesday, and drop as low as 10 degrees overnight. Areas like the windy Tejon pass are dropping down to
the lowest temperatures of the year and travelers are already feeling the chill. "It just cuts through your skin," said Kathy Ricossa, of Anaheim. "It feels like it's cutting right through. Biting." During these cold temperatures, residents in a West Hollywood apartment building experienced a hole in the roof after a large plank of wood came crashing through it from a construction site. No one was injured, but some people had to be moved out for some time. On Monday morning, temperatures near Gorman were at 26 degrees, accompanied by strong winds. Snow and ice was seen along Highway 18 in Big Bear, where Caltrans crews stayed busy, making sure the roadways were clear. Officials said chains may be required on Highway 38 as snow levels are expected to fall as low as 1,500 feet.
Since its inception, Black History Month has never been just a celebration of black America’s achievements and stories — it’s part of a deliberate political strategy to be recognized as equal citizens. Yet lost amid today’s facile depictions of Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad or George Washington Carver’s peanuts is black America’s claim as co-authors of U.S. history, a petition the nation has never accepted. This was the aim of Carter G. Woodson, a black historian and originator of Negro History Week in 1926. He believed that appreciating a people’s history was a prerequisite to equality. He wrote of the commemoration, “If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world.” That is, no amount of legislation can grant you equality if a nation doesn’t value you. This is the story of black America — underappreciated and perpetually experiencing trickle-down citizenship wherein progress only reaches us if the nation’s cup runneth over. There is no disputing that tremendous racial progress has occurred over the course of the nation’s history. And actions by the federal government are often cited as milestones of this evolution: the Emancipation Proclamation, constitutional amendments, Reconstruction Era edicts, Supreme Court cases and the Great Society legislation. Undoubtedly, if not for each of these, we never would have elected a black President or have more black members in Congress today than ever before. But we must remember that Black History Month exists to deliver what federal policy has not — the eradication of systemic racism. Yes, policy is important, but the state of black America today proves it is wholly insufficient on this score. We have Brown v. Board, and yet the racial segregation of public schools remains the norm. We have the Fair Housing Act, and racial segregation in housing has barely changed in nearly four decades. We have the Fifteenth Amendment and a Supreme Court-weakened Voting Rights Act, and yet state laws still implement measures that disproportionately affectblack voters. Black unemployment remains at twice the rate of white
Americans. Black median wealth is nearly ten times less than white wealth. Black Americans are incarcerated at a rate five times that of their white countrymen. And black health continues to be worse on nearly every front — heart disease, asthma, infant mortality, diabetes — and the racial gap cancer deaths is widening. These are not just problems of U.S. policy but of the American character. If we deemed this disparate black experience in America to be unacceptable, the country would have undertaken a massive federal program to address it specifically. But it has not, because black life is viewed as an expendable character in the American narrative. Black History Month was aimed squarely at this harsh truth. It was crafted to compel recognition by a stubborn nation of the inimitable and invaluable role black people have played in the creation and sustainment of the United States. It is 28 days of political strategy to recast depictions of the nation’s black population as inherently and completely American. It is the reframing of the age-old rhetorical questions posed by Sojourner Truth (“Ain’t I a woman?”) and abolitionists (“Am I not a man and a brother?”): Are we not Americans and citizens? If we look at the challenges facing black Americans, the answer to that question is unsatisfactory. And deep down, the nation knows it. Though nearly three in four Americans agree that race relations are bad, we see the issue quite differently. Nearly five times as many white Americans as black ones say the U.S. has already made the changes necessary to give black people equal rights — while four times as many black Americans as white ones believe we will never make those fixes. And yet, six in ten Americans say that racism against black people is widespread. It is much more comforting to believe that resolving the race issue is a simple matter of black people assuming more personal responsibility, combined with better policy. But good behavior has never released a people from oppression, not even the Founding Fathers. And without a change in how the na(continued on page 8)

How Long Until We Protect Children,Not Guns?! If I don’t make it I love you and I appreciate everything you did for me --Text message sent from a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida to her mother By Marian Wright Edelman December 2017 marked the fifth anniversary of the indescribably horrible mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School when 20 young children and 6 teachers were brutally murdered by a 20year-old with a gun he should never have possessed. As our nation was grieving, I wrote that this terrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut was no fluke but a result of the senseless, immoral and indefensible neglect of all of us in our nation to protect children instead of guns and to speak out against the pervasive culture of violence and the insane proliferation of guns by the millions that have no business in civilian hands. I truly believed at the time that these shocking and horrific murders would finally force our elected leaders to put child life and safety ahead of politics and the NRA and take the necessary steps to protect children instead of guns. Wow was I wrong. Sandy Hook marked a turning point in public opinion about guns and sparked a new wave of public advocacy to prevent gun violence, but it did not fundamentally change the cowardice of most of the men and women we have elected to represent us who put their political self-interest ahead of the safety of our children. Though some states made important strides to prevent deadly weapons from getting into the wrong hands, others have gone backwards. Our Congressional leaders have continued to offer platitudes after horrific mass shootings while doing nothing to act and expand and improve the background check system, limit access to assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, deprive domestic violence perpetrators of their guns, or even take basic steps to prevent children from accessing deadly firearms by requiring safe storage of guns and ammunition. Congress has turned a blind eye and wallowed in inaction while the deadly plague of gun violence afflicting our nation has worsened. The rate of child and teen gun deaths has increased every year since Sandy Hook and nearly 11,000 more children and teens have died. On Wednesday it happened again. This time the victims were
teachers and students going about their day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – maybe excited about Valentine’s Day because of a secret crush, or planning to go to Ash Wednesday mass that evening. The shooter was a 19-year-old former student at the school with a history of disturbing behavior and an obsession with guns. Like many other mass shooters in United States, he was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle. In a short span of time seventeen people lost their lives and at least fourteen were injured. Once again we saw the scenes many of us first saw outside Columbine High School in April 1999 that now seem horribly and tragically familiar in America: frightened students fleeing with their hands up, frantic parents desperate to reunite with their children, and traumatized survivors telling television interviewers what happened and the horrors they heard and saw. And it goes on and on and will continue to go on and on until we stand up together and say no more. An entire generation of children are coming of age understanding that there is no safe space in America after bearing witness to horrifying massacres killing 26 and 9 people in churches in Texas and South Carolina, 58 at a concert in Nevada, 49 at a nightclub in Florida, 9 at a college in Oregon, 14 at a workplace in California, 2 at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky in January, and now 17 more children and adults on an otherwise ordinary day at a high school in Florida. Tens of thousands of other shootings have taught us all that gun violence does not discriminate. Twice since Sandy Hook we have had to put a new tragedy atop the list of the worst mass shootings in American history and gun death numbers grow in communities that often go unnoticed. When will the indefensible insane tolerance of violence end?! When will children and human life matter more than a gunman’s right to kill innocent people? We have already waited too long for our leaders to protect children rather than guns. Victims, survivors and families (continued in next 2 columns)
How Long Until We Protect Children,Not Guns?!...continued impacted by gun violence too often are forgotten. We must not let that happen again. How evil it was that on the very same day last December a national vigil was held just blocks from the Capitol to remember victims of gun violence, the House of Representatives voted 231 to 198 to pass the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R.38), a NRA priority that would allow individuals to carry concealed weapons across state lines even if the state to which they are traveling has much stronger gun safety laws. For example, if the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act were to pass the Senate now, a person from Mississippi, Missouri or Wyoming who is not even required to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, could travel with it to Massachusetts, California or New York, which all require that in order to apply for a concealed carry permit an applicant must first demonstrate good cause or a justifiable need. Forcing all states to recognize the concealed carry requirements of all other states regardless of their own laws and protections poses a significant threat to public safety across the nation. The concealed carry bill must not be taken up in the Senate. Several other bills have recently been introduced in Congress and offer potential progress. I hope we will take any positive steps we can to move them forward. For example, the Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act (S.2044/ H.R.4186) would close loopholes in federal law that currently permit the sale and possession of weapons to dating partners or former dating partners convicted of domestic violence crimes, and prohibits the sale or possession of a firearm by a person subject to a temporary domestic violence restraining order. Research shows women in domestic violence situations are five times more likely to be killed if their abuser owns a gun and their children are also at risk. An analysis by Everytown for Gun Safety found a majority of mass shootings from 2009-2016 were related to domestic or family violence. Only 13 states require law enforcement to remove firearms at the scene of a domestic violence incident. A domestic violence conviction should have barred the individual who killed 26 people in a Sutherland Springs, Texas church in November from purchasing a gun. The Air Force failed to report his conviction to the national background check system enabling him to clear a federal background check to purchase the rifle used in this horrific crime. The bipartisan Fix NICS Act of 2017 (S.2135) would help ensure data get promptly and accurately reported. It requires federal agencies and states to create plans to comply with existing federal laws requiring reporting of mental

health and criminal records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and provides financial support to states that comply and penalizes agencies that fail to report these records to the system. Both these bills are commonsense approaches to help limit gun violence. While they do not close all the dangerous federal loopholes that allow potentially dangerous people to get deadly weapons, their passing would be a critically important first step. There also are pending bills that would allow more research on gun violence, prohibit the sale of guns before completion of background checks, close loopholes in the background check system, and ban devices like bump stocks allowing shooters to increase the rate of fire of their semiautomatic weapons. All these positive steps deserve a vote. And it is also past time to reinstate the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines that consistently increase the body count in our all-too-frequent mass shootings. We must keep using our votes and voices to move forward and never never ever give up until we succeed. Every person who cares about protecting children and human life must stand up right now with urgency and persistence, join hands with those directly affected by gun violence, and demand Congressional action to prevent and break up the uniquely evil American love affair with guns and stop the scourge of gun violence that has killed more than 140,000 people and devastated thousands of families between Sandy Hook and this week’s tragedy. A child or teen dies from gunfire every 2 hours and 48 minutes in the United States; 3,128 children and teens died from guns in 2016, enough to fill 156 classrooms of 20 children. It is a profoundly immoral travesty that the NRA and its craven Congressional allies continue pushing to weaken gun laws although the majority of Americans cry out for stronger safeguards and children witness and suffer from mass shooting after mass shooting. In memory of the 17 children and adults whose lives were snuffed out this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the 2 children killed at Marshall County High School in Kentucky less than a month before, the 26 who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the tens of thousands more children and adults killed in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Charleston, Seattle, Orlando, Las Vegas, New York City, New Orleans, Sutherland Springs, and cities and small towns across our country now is the time to call and visit your elected leaders urging them to protect children, not guns.

Expansion of freeway express service has helped fuel recent ridership growth for Omnitrans. Omnitrans posted its first system-wide ridership gain in over three years when passenger boardings in January 2018 were 1.7% higher than January 2017. Growth was led by increased use of freeway express routes, up 14.2%, and the sbX bus rapid transit line, up 4.5%. In all, 22 of Omnitrans’ 35 bus routes carried more passengers than a year ago. Bus routes operating in the western San Bernardino Valley posted gains which averaged 6.2%. “We are pleased that Omnitrans’ efforts to attract new riders with express service, streamlined routes, improved regional connections, and mobile fares are beginning to pay off,” said Omnitrans Board Chair and Loma Linda Council Member Ron Dailey. “We hope the trend continues.” In the past year, Omnitrans has added one new freeway express route, implemented 15-minute service to passenger terminals at Ontario International Airport, expanded operating hours on sbX and implemented a mobile fare payment option. In December, the Metrolink extension to serve the downtown San Bernardino Transit Center improved regional multi-modal connectivity. The transit hub serves over 5,000 passengers a day making connections on bus routes operated by Omnitrans, Victor Valley Transit
Authority, Mountain Transit, Pass Transit, and Riverside Transit Agency. Omnitrans freeway express routes include Route 215 connecting San Bernardino and Riverside via the 215 and 91 Freeways, Route 290, operating on the 10 Freeway with stops in San Bernardino, Colton, Ontario and Montclair, and Route 208 which connects Yucaipa, Redlands and San Bernardino via the 10 Freeway. Two additional round trips will be added to Route 208 in May. The sbX bus rapid transit line now transports over 63,000 riders per month on average compared to under 42,000 monthly in the first year, 2014. Due to customer demand, Omnitrans expanded sbX service hours last September to operate from 5am to 11pm on weekdays. Omnitrans total ridership in calendar year 2017 was 11,436,432, a decrease of 5% from 2016. January 2018 was the first positive month, as compared to the same month in the prior year, since June 2014. “It’s great to start off 2018 with positive numbers, reversing a three year trend experienced by Omnitrans and other transit agencies in our region and the nation,” explained spokesperson Wendy Williams. Trump Administration Proposes Sale of Sham Insurance, Turning Back the Clock to When Insurers Could Discriminate against People with Pre-existing Conditions Community News Washington, D.C. —Today, the Trump administration proposed another policy that threatens the health care and financial security of children, parents, and other adults. The draft rule released by HHS allows insurance companies to sell sham insurance plans that do not cover essential health benefits or preexisting conditions, protections that are required under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). More specifically, the rule allows short-term, sham insurance plans, which currently may only be sold for a coverage period of 3 months, to be sold and marketed for up to 364 days. These sham plans can include fine print that, for example, would exclude coverage of asthma, diabetes, or cancer treatments, exclude critical services like pharmacy or maternity care, or include hidden limits, like covering only two-days or no-days of hospital care a year. Following is the statement of Frederick Isasi, executive director of Families USA: “This new rule demonstrates this administration’s intent to replace comprehensive coverage for individuals and their families with plans so unreliable they can-
not rightly be considered health insurance. “The Trump administration’s rule runs counter to what President Trump promised the American people. He said he’d provide ‘great health care for a fraction of the price.’ Yet, his administration is giving insurance companies the green light to sell sham insurance to vulnerable families. These junk plans can deny payment of medical bills for a range of common health care services -- from prenatal care to urgent care following a child’s accident on the soccer field – sticking consumers with the bill for care not covered by their plan. “Before the Affordable Care Act, hundreds of thousands of Americans a year declared bankruptcy because their health insurance didn’t cover critical services and, therefore, didn’t provide real financial protection. Since passage of the ACA, the number of bankruptcies has been cut in half. This new Trump administration rule could cause thousands of families to lose everything they’ve worked so hard for when they are struck by illness or in(continued on page 8)

You don't want to miss this once in a life time opportunity to shake the hand of the man who won the race war, during a time when racial discrimination was an issue in the United States of America. Saturday February 24th at the 50th Black History Month Parade and Expo, 10am on the corner of Citrus and Summit Avenue. Expo start at 12noon to 4pm at the North Home Depot. It is a rare sight to see an original Cobra on the road, even at car shows many of the "Cobras" are simply replicas, but rarer still is finding an original car, with the original owner. A plaque on the
windshield reads "History Making Cobra" and that statement is true in more ways than one. Hank Williams moved to Southern California in 1964, an aspiring racing driver piloting a Austin Healey 3000, but the world of sports car racing was moving towards bigger engines and faster lap times and the old Healey was not going to cut it much longer. The new Cobra as being raced at Riverside International Raceway not far from Hanks home in Fontana, and less than a year after seeing a Cobra on the track, he was at the dealership purchasing his car.

WASHINGTON – Former FBI Director James Comey, speaking to Howard University students, professors and staff, this week distanced himself from an FBI report that said “black identity extremists” were responsible for “increased violence” by AfricanAmericans against law enforcement. The report, entitled “Black Extremists Likely Motivated to Target Law Enforcement Officers,” has raised concern among many, including the 49-member Congressional Black Caucus, which met with the current FBI directly shortly after the report’s release last August. Comey said he was not aware of it while he was with the FBI. “The memo that generated all of the controversy was written after I was fired, so I don’t know exactly,” said Comey who was released May 2017 by President Donald Trump following Comey’s refusal to drop an investigation into Russian tampering in U.S. elections. “I never heard the term ‘black identity extremists’ while I was director.” Still, Comey offered his interpretation of what the report might have been trying to say. “I think what it is, is an effort in the domestic terrorism part of the counterterrorism division to understand the threat that might be coming from people who by a distorted view of their own race believe they have to engage in acts of violence,” Comey said. Ironically, the FBI’s counterterrorism division assess-
ment made news shortly before a 32-year-old woman was killed and 19 others were injured when a white supremacist rammed his car into a group of counter-protesters in August of last year during the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va. Despite terrorizing minorities, LGBTQ community members, Jews and Catholics for over a century, committing atrocities designed to induce a state of terror, no white supremacist groups have ever been designated as a terrorist organization. Comey, the Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy at Howard, was joined in a discussion on law enforcement and race by Justin Hansford, executive director of the newly-opened Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center in the Howard University School of Law. Comey said his life had been affected by issues of race when he was a student at College of William and Mary, the nation’s second oldest college. A friendship with one of few black students on campus had a major impact on his life, he said. Comey said he had almost no interaction with African-Americans early in his life. “There was only one other black family that lived in my town on my street, the Jacksons,” he said, “almost an entirely white high school. The app, which is essentially in its beta release, has gained traction globally with no marketing. can, and our lives couldn’t have been more different,” he said. Comey stated that his friendship with Samson affected him tremendously. “It lit a flame in me to understand different people,” he said. He wrote a series of articles on the experiences of black students and faculty as a campus journalist. “All of that came together and I decided, ‘You know what, I think I’d be better in seeking justice as a lawyer,’ because that’s where justice is found,” he said. As Comey and Hanford spoke, protestors demonstrated and chanted outside the university’s historical Founders Library. The protestors were members of HU Resist, a Howard student collation organized to change the campus and the surrounding community. According to HU Resist member Alexis McKenney, the organization opposes Comey because “he is responsible for the people like Rakem Balogun, formerly known as Christopher Daniels, being targeted and persecuted for ‘black identity extremism.’” Balogun of Dallas was under surveillance by the FBI for two years before they raided his home and arrested him in December 2017. Items taken from his home included a .38 caliber handgun, an assault rifle and the book, Negroes With Guns by Robert F. Williams. Balogun was indicted on unlawful possession of a firearm. The organization protested
Comey’s speech last September during the university’s annual Convocation ceremony marking the start of a new academic year. “We thought it important to continue our resistance to Comey, despite the ambivalence of our classmates,” McKenney said, “because at the end of the day, he’s a symbol of institutionalized white supremacy and state oppression.” Hansford challenged Comey in the discussion and dismissed his assertions that many problems between police and AfricanAmericans are caused by a few “bad apples.” “It’s not a question of bad apples,” Hanford responded. “It’s a question of bad systems.” “The FBI has a very challenging history with the black community,” he added, referring to the many years the FBI under director J. Edgar Hoover, spied on, hounded African-American leaders and organizations beginning with Marcus Garvey in the 1920s, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the NAACP, Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam in the 1950s and 60s and the Black Panthers in the 1970s. Comey said he tried to address the FBI’s history of misdeeds regarding African-Americans while director. He said he wanted agents and analysts to study the organization’s history of misconduct, including programs such as Cointelpro, a counterintelligence program used heavily in the 1960s to surveil civil and human rights organizations. “I tried to make the FBI stare at that history,” he said. “I’m a believer that transparency is to include. I commissioned a course at Quantico, where every new agent and analyst of the FBI studies the history of the FBI, with special emphasis on the FBI’s interaction with Dr. King, and you know that horrific history.” He further explained that at the end of the course, all the trainees go to the King memorial in the nation’s capital where they are assigned a final project. They must pick something Dr. King said on those two stones and write an essay about how the quote intertwines with the FBI’s values. Even with those programs, Comey said, his efforts were “probably not enough” to bridge the divide and mistrust between African Americans and the FBI.

Only four Black women were general election candidates for statewide elected executive office in the 2016 elections, and none were successful, indicates the study put out by the Center for American Women and Politics, Higher Heights and Rutgers University. Eastin used the opportunity to lift up teachers and others, who may have stood in the gap for those who suffered in dysfunctional families in their youth. Whether they were from, married to, or were best friends with someone from a dysfunctional family, somebody steps up for them, she said. On the question of public safety, Chiang congratulated Villaraigosa on earning the California Police Chiefs Association and the Peace Officers Research Association of California's endorsement. He claimed he was bypassed for asserting it's important that they have a discussion about Black Lives Matter. "You have to have that tough conversation about what are your recruitment policies? What are your retention policies, and how are you engaging? How are you disengaging," said Chiang? Villaraigosa gave the roadmap for gaining political empowerment. "Every time you sit down with your governor, and you get to sit down with the CEO, you should ask them, who's on the board," he stated.
"At the end of the day, good government is government of the people. That's got to reflect the diversity," Villaraigosa added. Judy Baloney, a resident of Elk Grove in Sacramento County, said she attended without a preconceived idea of who she would vote for. She left feeling Villaraigosa was the least prepared, and that Eastin "brought it home." "I think is an ongoing conversation. I think this was a start. I don't think we were able to delve into a lot of the key issues that we need to delve in, especially when it dealt with health and public safety and our education process," said Nolice Edwards, of Sacramento. She felt the candidates at least received a good start toward thinking about Black women's issues. "When we come back, after June, they should be ready, have done their homework, and be prepared to delve into the issues that impact Black women," she stated. Candidate and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom was absent due to a scheduling conflict. "He was so sorry that he could not be here. It was so important for him that I be here on his behalf, not only to represent him but represent my values," said Jennifer Siebel Newsom. She said she was honored to be there to listen to the issues that are nearest and dearest to the hearts of Black women, in particular, and their families. "These are issues that we need to address and fix, and if we can fix these issues, then I think that we can actually address inequality in our country," she stated.

Over 62,000 Rural California Homes And Businesses Could Get Access To High Speed Internet Locations Eligible for Support from FCC’s Connect America Fund This Summer State/Government News
WASHINGTON, February 15, 2018– Over 62,500 rural homes and businesses in California that are currently unserved by highspeed Internet service could get connectivity in the near future. These homes and businesses are in unserved areas of California eligible for financial support from the next phase of FCC’s Connect America Fund (CAF), which helps offset the high cost of extending broadband service into rural areas. The FCC will be distributing these funds through an innovative “reverse auction,” which is scheduled to launch on July 24. “Connecting the unconnected in rural America is my top priority,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. “I’m excited that our CAF auction will provide opportunities for innovative companies and cooperatives to bridge the digital divide for the California consumers and small businesses that lack highspeed access today.” Nationwide, providers will compete for up to $2 billion in support to expand access to broadband to nearly 1 million homes and locations in unserved rural areas
over the next decade. The auction will provide opportunities for new entrants to the marketplace, regardless of technology, including phone companies, fixed wireless service providers, satellite providers, cable companies and electric utility broadband providers. By harnessing market forces, the auction is designed to provide consumers with high-quality, broadband service in an efficient, cost-effective way. The application period for providers seeking to participate in the auction runs from March 19 – March 30. Broadband access is essential in the 21st Century for jobs, education, information and economic development. Since 2011, the FCC has targeted more than $9 billion in support for rural broadband expansion to over 4 million homes and small businesses through its Connect America Fund. Frederick Douglass A Heart For His People Health/Fitness News
(Photo credit: Twitter.com) Frederick Douglass was a former slave who became one of the great American anti-slavery leaders of the 1800s. Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland but he knew it wasn’t God’s plan for him to stay there. When Frederick was about 10, he was given to Anthony’s daughter, Lucretia Auld. She and her husband Thomas sent Douglass to serve his brother, Hugh, in Baltimore, where he learned to read while working as a house slave. In 1833, after Thomas and Hugh got in a dispute, Thomas took back the slaves. Douglass returned to Thomas’s estate the same year and resumed work as a field hand. Thomas was a cruel master, starving and beating his slaves and breaking up their attempts to worship, read and write. He leased Douglass out to other masters who attempted to break his independent spirit with physical and emotional abuse. Eventually, Douglass returned to Hugh in Baltimore, fell in love and started a family. This increased his hatred of slavery and in 1838, at the age of 20, armed with fake papers, a sailor-suit disguise and hope for the future, he escaped to the free North with the help of Anna Murray, the free black woman from Baltimore with whom he had fallen in love. They ended up in Rochester, New York. As a free man, Douglass couldn’t forget the people he’d left behind in Maryland. He became involved in the abolitionist cause, started publishing his own abolitionist newspaper, The North Star. A few years later he went to work for abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, traveling and speaking on behalf of Garrison’s paper The Liberator. Douglass published his memoir Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave in 1845. Eloquent, smart and determined, Douglass gained fame as a speaker and became a ‘conductor’ on the Underground Railroad. In later years he
became a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln and helped persuade Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. He also was a strong supporter of women’s rights. He is often described as the founder of the American civil rights movement. On February 20, 1895, after attending a meeting for the National Council of Women in Washington, D.C., Frederick Douglass returned home and died of a massive heart attack. Unfortunately, over one-hundred years later, heart attack still plagues the Black community.
Blacks and Heart Disease • 50% of Blacks between the ages of 40 and 59 years of age have hypertension, while only 30% of Whites in the same age group suffer from the ailment. • The prevalence rate of congestive heart failure is 2% among Blacks and Whites; however, among those 60 years and older, the rate is 9% among Blacks and 6% among Whites. • The overall prevalence of stroke is higher among Blacks than Whites. Among those who are 60 years or older, 11% of Blacks and only 7% of whites report having had a stroke. • However, the prevalence of high total cholesterol is lower for Blacks than Whites (13% and 19%, respectively). What Is a Heart Attack? A heart attack occurs when the supply of blood and oxygen to an area of heart muscle is blocked, usually by a clot in a coronary artery. Often, this blockage leads to arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat or rhythm) that cause a severe decrease in the pumping function of the heart and may bring about sudden death. If the blockage is not treated within a few hours, the affected heart muscle will die and be replaced by scar tissue.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack? The warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack can include: • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. Heart attack pain can sometimes feel like indigestion or heartburn. • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain, discomfort, or numbness in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. • Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before……chest discomfort. • Other symptoms. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, having nausea and vomiting, or feeling light-headed or dizzy.

You can lower your risk of having a heart attack, even if you have already had a heart attack or are told that your chances of having a heart attack are high. To prevent a heart attack, you will most likely need to make lifestyle changes. You may also need to get treatment for conditions that raise your risk. Make Lifestyle Changes
Signs and symptoms vary from person to person. In fact, if you have a second heart attack, your symptoms may not be the same as for the first heart attack. Some people have no symptoms. This is called a “silent” heart attack. The symptoms of angina can be similar to those of a heart attack. If you have angina and notice a change or a worsening of your symptoms, talk with your doctor right away.

Nationwide — Building on its success in prostate cancer education, awareness and advocacy, the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) is enhancing its efforts with a Broadway-style stage play. “Daddy’s Boys” tells the story of a widowed father and his sons, whose relationships are fractured, coming together when faced with prostate cancer. This highly entertaining play imparts real-life messages and information to the audience which raises prostate cancer awareness. It is the latest health-oriented presentation by playwright Garrett Davis, who uses humor and music-laden dramas to bring awareness to minority health issues. The PHEN/Davis collaboration builds on Davis’ established portfolio of stage productions that highlight diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease among other issues. “Daddy’s Boys” will launch on March 9th in Philadelphia, PA, in partnership with Enon Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, a mega-church serving the African American community. On May 12th there will be a performance in Glendale, MD at Reid Temple AME Church. Informational workshops, resource materials and cancer screening will be provided as part of these efforts. “We are thrilled to kick-off the Daddy’s Boys tour at Enon Tabernacle. It is a great complement to our ‘Men know your Numbers’ Health Initiative that will be held on March 10th,” says Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Alyn Waller. Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes loss of vision—usually side vision—by damaging the optic nerve, which sends information from your eyes to your brain. Some forms of glaucoma don’t have any symptoms, so you may have it even if you don’t have trouble seeing or feel any pain. That’s why glaucoma is often called “the sneak thief of sight.” Fortunately, you can prevent vision loss by finding and treating problems early. Medicare covers a glaucoma test once every 12 months for people at high risk for glaucoma, including people who answer “yes” to one or more of these questions:

·The location where you’re tested. There is no cure for glaucoma. Vision lost from the disease cannot be restored. Without treatment, people with glaucoma will slowly lose their peripheral (side) vision. If glaucoma remains untreated, people may miss objects to the side and out of the corner of their eye. They seem to be looking through a tunnel. Over time, straight-ahead (central) vision may decrease until no vision remains. Immediate treatment for earlystage, open-angle glaucoma can delay progression of the disease. That’s why early diagnosis is very important. Glaucoma treatments include medicines, laser trabeculoplasty, conventional surgery, or a combination of these. While these treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve sight already lost from glaucoma. Glaucoma is detected through a comprehensive dilated eye exam that includes the following: Visual acuity test. This eyechart test measures how well you see at various distances.
Visual field test. This test measures your peripheral vision. It helps your eye care professional tell if you have lost peripheral vision, a sign of glaucoma. Dilated eye exam. In this exam, drops are placed in your eyes to widen, or dilate, the pupils. Your eye care professional uses a special magnifying lens to examine your retina and optic nerve for signs of damage and other eye problems. After the exam, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours. Tonometry measures pressure inside the eye by using an instrument called a tonometer. A tonometer can detect glaucoma. Numbing drops may be applied to your eye for this test. Pachymetry is the measurement of the thickness of your cornea. Your eye care professional applies a numbing drop to your eye and uses an ultrasonic wave instrument to measure the thickness of your cornea. Boston University researchers surveyed nearly 4,000 women and more than 1,000 of their male partners, looking at everyone’s medical history, lifestyle factors and diet. The data revealed that drinking soda was linked to a reduction in the average monthly probability of conception for both men and women. Women who drank at least one soda per day demonstrated a 25 percent lower monthly probability of conception, while men who drank at least one soda per day had a 33 percent lower probability of successfully conceiving with their partner. Drinking soda is also tied to early menstruation and poor semen quality — although few studies have investigated the direct effects that soda may have on fertility. The authors explain that given the amount of sugary drinks consumed across the U.S., their findings may have important implications for public health. “We found positive associations,” says lead study author Elizabeth Hatch, who is a profes-
sor of epidemiology, “between intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and lower fertility, which were consistent after controlling for many other factors, including obesity, caffeine intake, alcohol, smoking, and overall diet quality.” The authors suggest if a couple is trying to get pregnant, they may want to try cutting back on soda until future research can determine why this link exists. Unfortunately, it is already true that African American women experience all types of pregnancy loss more often than do white women—not only miscarriage but also stillbirth, preterm birth, and infant death. Infertility among African American women is not only a silent and hidden problem in the African American Community, but one that continues to be on the rise. According to Dr. Desiree McCarthy-Keith, a Reproductive Endocrinologist at Georgia Reproductive Specialists, research shows that among the 7.3 million women in the United States, approximately 11.5% of African American women experience a variety of infertility problems compared to 7% of white women. The scholarship program was created to support the next generation of journalists, and to strengthen the pipeline of diversity in journalism and media. ‘Black Panther’ Drums Up $218M Opening Weekend By JAKE COYLE, AP Film Writer NEW YORK (AP) — A wave of feverish anticipation, fawning critical acclaim and groundbreaking cultural meaning pushed “Black Panther” to a record-setting $218 million debut in U.S. and Canada theaters, firmly establishing the superhero sensation as a boxoffice landmark. The Marvel film from the Walt Disney Co. blew past expectations to become the fifthhighest-grossing debut ever, not adjusting for inflation, following only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” ”Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” ”Jurassic World” and “The Avengers.” In estimates Sunday, Disney predicted a four-day holiday weekend of $218 million domestically and a global debut of $361 million. Though the film’s international footprint doesn’t include several of the largest markets — China, Russia and Japan — it still ranks among the top 15 global debuts ever. It’s also the highest-grossing February opening weekend. “All hail the King of Wakanda!” Disney declared, referring to the movie’s mythical and highly advanced African nation. Ryan Coogler’s film, which cost about $200 million to make, is the most expensive movie with a largely black ensemble and among the few to be centered on a black superhero. The strong opening suggests “Black Panther” will easily set a box-office record for films directed by a black filmmaker. It features deep cuts in domestic programs and entitlements including Medicare, education, social safety nets that ensure food security, and reduced spending for health and education for children. The devastation cuts broadly across the nation impacting America’s most impoverished citizens. These efforts could be more broadly understood as part of a larger strategy to dismantle civil and human rights. Support for racial equity remains absent from our Justice Department as well, as demonstrated by Attorney General Jeff Session, who recently praised the nation’s sheriffs by referencing the Anglo American heritage of law enforcement in a recent speech at the National Sheriffs’ Association. Du Bois, American sociologist, historian, and civil rights activists accurately named the racial crisis of the twentieth century saying, “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.” Du Bois engages the questions of race, racial domination and racial exploitation in his 1903 classic book, The Souls of Black Folks. Du Bois identified racism as a national problem, and he named the crisis correctly. Our nation is facing an even more urgent crisis in the twenty-first century. I wish Americans would move passed their shock and surprise as this, because as long as we live in denial, racism will live on. We are indeed living in troubled times. However the Spirit of God reminds us to have hope. As people of faith we can reclaim God’s love and justice to dismantle and eradicate racism, xenophobia, and white skin privilege and supremacy. And we can start by entering into a covenant through a forthcoming United Church of Christ curriculum entitled, Sacred Conversations to End Racism. Sacred conversations alone will not end racism, but as people of great faith who believe in and trust the living God we can disrupt, dismantle, and eradicate systems that prevent people from living freely within the United States. We can create a movement towards activism protecting undocumented immigrants from being deported. We can show up when communities of color are threatened by militarism and police violence, and we must take a stand and declare that Black Lives Matter. The Good News as reported 2 Timothy 1:7 states, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but the spirit of power, of courage and resolution, to meet difficulties and dangers; the spirit of love which will carry us through opposition.” May we seize upon that courage, motivated by love, as we work to end racism.

Open Auditions For Disney’s “Beauty And The Beast” Auditions are announced for Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast," the fully staged Broadway musical for this year's Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. Producer-Director Wayne Scott has scheduled the open auditions for two Saturdays, March 10 and March 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The auditions will be held at First Congregational Church, 2 West Olive in Redlands. "The auditions are conducted on a first come, first served basis, without appointments," said Scott, "and all roles are open at this time." Scott emphasized that the first Saturday, March 10, will be devoted to those auditioning for principal or choral roles. The second Saturday, March 17, will be for select candidates who are called back and for those unable to audition on March 10. These auditions will be conducted by appointment throughout the morning. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16 measures of any familiar Broadway musical style song, preferably from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast." They must bring their own sheet music in their key, and Scott will provide an accompanist. He will not consider electronic sound accompaniment such as tracks on CD and no a capella singing will be considered. In addition to singing, Scott may ask auditioners to interpretively recite the lyrics of their song. Memorization is not necessary as they may refer to the music. Lou Yeboah Now that the celebration of Black History Month is coming to a close; how can we honor our history, respond to the present, and build a viable, vibrant future for our people? I’ll tell you how…. We can honor their memory by rediscovering the “Faith” that allowed them to survive. The Faith, that enabled our forefathers to endure trials and hardships that we can only imagine. The Faith, that inspired leaders to respond courageously to the problems of our people. We can build on the legacy they have left us by carefully following the One they followed – Jesus. It is not too late! We can still return to the God of our fathers. For we have an extraordinarily rich spiritual heritage and there is victory in our bloodline. We belong to the family of God, and being engrafted into His family means that we are overcomers through the Blood of Jesus; the Blood of the Lamb, the Conquering Weapon. Therefore, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the pioneer and perfecta of our Faith. For it wasn’t by power nor by might, but by the Spirit of God—the wisdom, authority, power, and presence of the Most High God—that freedom, equality, and justice was and will continue to be. Your history, the history of the continent of civilization in Africa, starts in modern day Sudan, around 6000 B.C. In fact, the first "empire" of two great nations happened between modern-day Egypt and modern-day Sudan. We will be sure you know those modern names are European names. We will teach you their deep-rooted African names: KMT and Meroe. We are teaching you the history of Ancient Kemet, Meroe and Nubia. You will learn of the African civilizations, the use of iron and tools in Africa, the resource riches of the African continent and the complicated, fascinating history of over 10,000 years of human civilization. Africa had kings and queens and warriors, slaves, artists, scientists, mathematicians, farmers, sailors, inventors and musicians. You come from a beautifully talented Black culture. As your mother, I have told you repeatedly that you are already free to be whoever you want to be. But as you approach adolescence and spend more time in schools than you do with your parents, you may begin to doubt that I told you the truth. So much about Donald Trump, his behavior, his connections, his campaign and his presidency seems so crazy it is hard to make sense of it all-until we see for years he's been a Russian agent working for spymaster Vladimir Putin. This is a deeper treason than previously speculated. We don't know what is going on inside US Department of Justice special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe. But a wide array of singular information is out there. It's a question of how to use it. Most science uses analysis, which is deductive reasoning that breaks a problem down for detailed consideration. However, solving some problems-like How did the universe begin?-calls for synthesis. Its reasoning is inductive, harvesting disparate observations to find a single explanation. Enter the Presidential problem: How can we best make sense of the many singular facts we know about him? Arthur Conan Doyle, leading exponent of detection science,
Deutsche Bank has Sherlock Holmes, past master of inductive reasoning, saying: 'Singularity is almost invariably a clue.' Here's a singularity to start with: Mueller's investigators include leading money-laundering experts. Here's another: Trump's business modus operandi was to borrow big and fail to repay the loans. He boasted about it. In 2008, Trump stiffed Deutsche Bank for $40 million that he had personally guaranteed. After that what bank would lend to him? None, except Deutsche Bank! It since seems to have become the main bank financing Trump-family enterprise. Deutsche Bank is a financial services company headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. It aspires to be 'the leading client-centric global universal bank'. In reality it's well known as a leading money launderer with ties to Russian oligarchs and financial crimes. In the past 12 months it paid hundreds of millions of dollars to settle fraud and pricerigging cases. Mueller's Russia probe is reportedly looking into

In 2008 Trump sold a Florida mansion he bought for $42 million and never lived in to a Russian oligarch for $95 million, who then tore it down. It's unclear when they may have started but Trump moneylaundering connections go back many years. Internal Revenue Service documents show the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City engaged in money laundering for decades after its 1990 opening. In 2012 a luxury Trump International Hotel sprang into being in a bizarre location, a rough district in Baku, Azerbaijan. A few blocks from the Safran Hotel, which has rooms for $18, it cost hundreds of millions of dollars, much of it paid in cash. The New Yorker describes it as 'a corrupt operation engineered by oligarchs tied to Iran's Revolutionary Guard' in an article that explores how its development-overseen by daughter Ivanka Trumpwas singularly suited to money laundering. The hotel never opened. Trump's real-estate businesses, hotels and casinos were financial disasters. His record shows he was never any good at it. Yet once again his net worth is in the billions. Synthesis suggests a simple explanation: His real business is large-scale money laundering, mostly for Russian oli-

In formal school education, you will be exposed to a different viewpoint. Most school curricula in the United States are completely uninterested in young, brilliant Black girls like you learning about your culture, discovering multiple viewpoints or forming your own opinions. In school, you will likely be inundated with stories of Europe: Ancient Greece, Roman Empire, the Medieval Period, Dark Ages, Industrial Revolution and the British Empire. Then you will be told all about the greatness of the United States of America that comes from the rich history of Europe. You will be forced to memorize, learn and admire the brilliance and beauty of Europe and White people. This is something I cannot protect you from. You must learn their history. But remember, more
The United States of America was founded in 1776. On July 4, 2018, the U.S. will be 243 years old. Europeans landed in the Americas in 1492 and have been interacting with indigenous land of the First Americans, for almost 550 years. Understand this, my beautiful, brilliant Black daughters. Your history is over 10,000 years old. The enslavement of Black people by White people, is at best, only 550 years of your history. That is a mere 5.5 percent of your totality. Sure, the enslavement of Black people by White people, and our subsequent struggles to become totally free, are important to know and learn. But they are a very, very small part of who you really are and who you, and we, as Black people, can be. What makes you, and other beautiful, brilliant, Black children, (continued on page 8)
garchs. This would swiftly come to Putin's personal attention. Russian state security FSB (formerly KGB) are masters of suborning vulnerable people to become agents. Putin knows exactly how to do it; it was his KGB spymaster career that got him appointed Director of the FSB. There was no need for blackmail based on kinky video from a wired Moscow hotel four years ago, as reported by an ex-intelligence officer. Trump became Putin's creature body and soul long before that, soon after he did his first Russian dirty-money deal. Let's be clear: This is not an expanded version of the electioncollusion story. There was no need for collusion! This was initiated by a direct order from Putin to the election's manipulators to move his man into the White House; and Putin-who would trust nobody else with this-is Trump's direct controller. Putin's interference in the election has been portrayed as revenge for Hillary Clinton's interfering in his own 2011 election. Maybe, but Putin is about much more than that. He sees the collapse of the Soviet Union, brought down by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, as 'the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century'. He sees NATO's expansion close to Russia's borders as a threat. He sees continued sanctions, promoted by the US, as wounding Russia's economic recovery.
Much more than revenge, Putin wants to make Russia great againgreater than the USA. Trump's mission is plain to see: Take the US down; make it never great again. For a man who is incompetent at so many other things, he's doing a great job- weakening America's alliances, demoralizing its State Department, attacking its democratic institutions, destroying its moral ascendancy, hurting its economic prospects, undercutting its security establishment-the list goes on. Induction does not share the logic of deduction. Its weight depends upon explaining all those singular observations (here we've only sampled them) with one simple assumption. It leaves open the possibility that Trump is not a Russian and there is a better explanation; or perhaps it's all a wild coincidence. One thing is certain: Mueller knows much more than we can discern. But with what we do know we can project charges Mueller may contemplate. Obstruction of justice might not be
Trump Towers, Baku, Azerbaijan. worth the bother; one would hardly be surprised to see money laundering, tax evasion, conspiracy and treason. These charges seem sure to lead to impeachment proceedings. It's true that, as The Globe & Mail's Margaret Wente (speaking for a wide consensus) said, this 'would require evidence of criminal wrongdoing so strong that his own base would abandon him ....' For obstruction of justice, this seems unlikely. But for treason? If the probe yields convincing evidence, overnight Trump will become a pariah. Mueller is reputed to know how to manage this kind of thing. One can almost sympathize with Trump, trapped by greed and now a hapless pawn in the hands of a master manipulator, almost losing his mind as he feels facts closing in on him. The world's worst danger is not-as current chatter has it-a constitutional crisis over firing Mueller. That would at most put off the evil day. Trump's chief talent is deflection: Putin's man in Washington will want a war. Will Putin restrain him?
Michelle Obama on ‘Black Panther’: ‘Young People Will Finally See Superheroes that Look Like Them’...continued decades after films by Black artists struggled to gain traction in Hollywood. Some in Hollywood believe that executives may attribute “Black Panther’s” success to the massive production and marketing machine behind it rather than the predominantly Black casts being the box office draw. “I think no matter how much money this movie makes, it will be seen by a lot of people in [studio] staff meetings and greenlight committees as just a one-off,” a prominent African American figure in the Hollywood development world, “asking for anonymity so as not to be perceived as criticizing potential business partners,” told The Washington Post. “And the question is: How many more ‘one-offs’ will we have before they realize it’s a pattern?” UCLA’s 2017 Hollywood Diversity Report found that films with relatively diverse casts have the highest median global box office receipts and the highest median return on investment. “Black Panther” received an Aplus on CinemaScore in audience exit polling its opening night, which means that great word-of-
mouth promotion will take place. Other films with predominantly Black casts that have also received an A-plus in the past two years are “Hidden Figures” (2016), which was number one at the box office in its first weekend in wide release, and “Girls Trip” (2017) opened at number two. During its time in theaters, “Hidden Figures” earned just under $170 million in total domestic ticket sales and almost $235 million worldwide, and “Girls Trip,” just above $115 million domestic and approximately $140 million worldwide. With “Get Out” (2017), starring Daniel Kaluuya who is also in “Black Panther,” Jordan Peele became the first Black writer-director to make over $100 million in the box office for a debut film. The earnings for these movies are less than what “Black Panther” will accumulate as they are not big-budget films, but the box office draw shows there is indeed a pattern in moviegoers wanting more diverse casts on-screen and then spreading the word about the film. Hollywood execs will have to adapt or lose revenue.

Nikolas Cruz, who shot and killed 17 people at a high school in Florida on Wednesday, reportedly has ties to a white nationalist organization, according to the leader of the group. Jordan Jereb, leader of the Republic of Florida (ROF), confirmed Cruz’s membership to multiple outlets. Following Jereb’s initial claim, though, conflicting reports have emerged. “Jereb told The Associated Press that his group wants Florida to become its own white ethnostate. He said his group holds ‘spontaneous random demonstrations’ and tries not to participate in the modern world.” Jereb told the Daily Beast that he doesn’t know Cruz very well. (Several of Cruz’s former classmates told ABC News that they often saw Cruz and Jereb together, though.) Whether or not Jereb and Cruz were close, though, Jereb said that Cruz “knew full well he was joining a white separatist paramilitary proto-facist organization. I think there were a lot of Jews at the school that might have been messing with him.” Scott Israel, sheriff of Broward County, said that authorities could not confirm at this time whether Cruz is or is not linked to the group, multiple media outlets reported. A clear motive has not yet been established. At least one of the victims reportedly attended a Jewish summer camp, and one of the teachers who was killed was a counselor at a predominantly Jewish summer camp. Another victim, Joaquin Oliver, was an immigrant from Venezuela who arrived in the United States as a toddler. Cruz, 19, opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Wednesday afternoon. He pulled the fire alarm to lure his victims out of their classrooms. The attack began at 2:19 pm and Cruz was not taken into custody until 3:41 pm. During that time, Cruz ditched his vest and AR-15 rifle and blended in the crowd of students who were fleeing the building. He left the campus and made stops at a local Walmart and McDonald’s. Authorities eventually found him walking on the street and arrested him.

different from many White children, is you know that their history isn't just fact-it is a viewpoint. And, that you, as a Black American, as a Black African, have completely different interpretations of history, of heroes, of scholars and who is "important." As your parent, I wish you were free, my beautiful, brilliant Black children to speak openly, honestly and without fear about who you are and your Black history. But it is not always safe for you to do that. Talking about Ancient Egypt being African can get you in trouble. Having a name that "sounds Black" can lose you a job. In fact, much of life will be devoted to protecting yourself from White people's false views about who Black people are and what they have and can do. But I promise you, with all that I am, I will tell you the truth. Just as my mother told me the truth. Your ancestors who came to the Americas 500 years ago not only survived attempted physical and
cultural genocide, they kept our Black African story, culture and beauty alive. Remember 550 years is nothing compared to over 10,000 years. Our last 550 years is not our whole story. In fact, it is just a tiny piece of the story. No matter what White people think, or try to tell you about who you are as a Black person, we have a very different perspective. As your parent, I swear on the lives of all our ancestors over our 10,000-year history, I will never let you forget how beautiful and brilliant you are, my Black daughters. Nor will I let you forget our beautiful, brilliant Black culture. You are part of a beautiful, brilliant, Black people that has a history and presence throughout the world. 500 years? Ha! America Is Losing the Real Meaning of Black History Month...continued from page 1 tion views its black citizens, even good policy will be used as a cudgel. A magic pill to reduce health disparities would be rationed; a work program to reduce employment disparities would become a cash cow for those in power; and reparations would incite the most creative, exploitive financial vehicles the country has ever seen. How do we know? Because we’ve seen the movie before. Housing bubbles and payday lenders come for black wealth first. Affirmative action has helped more white workers and students than black ones. White flight from schools and neighborhoods rose once federal desegregation statues were passed. And changes to state voting laws accelerated once a black President took office. Programs to help those who are not valued provide little value to those who need the programs most. It’s not that policy doesn’t matter. As Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “It may be true that law cannot change the heart, but it can restrain the heartless. It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me…” This is true, and yet Trayvon Martin is not here. James Byrd is not here. Eric Garner and Latasha Harlins are not here. Policy is needed, but the
politics of black history tell us that policy ain’t enough. Only recognizing and respecting the dignity and equality of black Americans can deliver the nation we all want, and Black History Month is a means to this end. Don’t get me wrong: The accomplishments of black people in the United States merit special attention, particularly given slavery’s inhumanity and its vestiges that still shape the nation. And the sustained popularity of the National Museum of African American History and Culture is a testament to the interest and curiosity about black culture that grips much of the nation. But these things exist so Americans will see the humanity in black people, not just so they can walk away with an interesting fact about the first black Senator or an entrepreneur who built a haircare business empire. Woodson believed that celebrating black history was a political act to “destroy the dividing prejudices of nationality and teach universal love without distinction of race, merit or rank.” Not because learning about, say, a black inventor would inspire white magnanimity, but because failure to accept black people as fellow architects of the United States is an existential threat to the nation we call home.
