Global music and fashion icon, business entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Rihanna, will receive the prestigious President’s Award and U.S. Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis (D-GA), will receive the prestigious NAACP Chairman’s Award during the 51st NAACP Image Awards Earlier this month, the NAACP announced that global music and fashion icon, business entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Rihanna, will receive the prestigious President’s Award during the 51st NAACP Image Awards. The President’s Award is presented in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service, with previous recipients including last year’s recipient Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, Jesse Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Soledad O’Brien, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, and
Muhammad Ali among others. NAACP President Derrick Johnson will present the award to Rihanna on BET on Saturday, February 22, 2020, from Pasadena, California. RIVERSIDE—U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson today visited Riverside, California, as part of his “Driving Affordable Housing Across America Bus Tour.” Secretary Carson participated in a roundtable discussion about affordable housing and toured The Grove Village, which consists of four 600 square feet cottages on church property that have been renovated through business donations and volunteer efforts. The units house families who were at risk of homelessness. “The power of the faith-based community can be seen here, through the united effort to care for our vulnerable neighbors and provide a safe place to call home in the Grove Village,” Secretary Carson said. “As California experiences a homeless crisis and rising housing prices, churches are on the frontlines as places of refuge for those who need it most. Thank you to these families for allowing me into their homes and to the Riverside Community for the compassion you have shown for all of God’s people.”

The “Driving Affordable Housing Across America Bus Tour” is a part of the work Secretary Carson is undertaking as the Chair of the White House Council on Eliminating Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing established in June 2019. Jarrett Adams: Falsely Accused Man Re-enters Society as an Attorney By Lauren Victoria Burke, NNPA Newswire Contributor
Jarrett M. Adams was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault at age 17 and sentenced to 28 years in a maximum-security prison. After serving nearly 10 years and filing multiple appeals, Jarrett was exonerated with the assistance of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. (Photo: jarrettadamslaw.com)
Jarrett Adams spent ten years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Adams was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault at age 17. He was then sentenced to 28 years in prison at a maximumsecurity prison. After filing numerous appeals Adams was exonerated with the assistance of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. Adams would end up serving close to 10 years before finally being exonerated in 2007. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin denied Adams’ petition for exoneration, but on June 20, 2006 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit overturned the District
Court and vacated Adams’ conviction. The Wisconsin Innocence Project filed a petition on Adams’s behalf asserting there was insufficient evidence to convict Adams and that Adams’ lawyer had been ineffective for failing to locate and call a relevant witness. After his ordeal, Adams became active in the movement to assist those who have no resources to have their cases challenged and closely reviewed. After his false conviction and imprisonment, Adams earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in May 2015. On Wednesday, January 29,
2020, thirteen years after being exonerated, Adams was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar. Adams was joined by Keith Findley, a co-founder of the Wisconsin Innocence Project at a ceremony celebrating his bar admission at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Founded in 1992 by attorney Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld in New York, The Innocence Project was created to assemble legal experts and law students in an effort to examine and investigate questionable cases and overturn wrongful convictions. As of November 17, 2019, the Innocence Project has worked on 189 successful DNA-based exonerations. The Innocence Project cites various studies estimating that between 2% and 5% of all prisoners in the U.S. are innocent. Trump Administration Cuts Food Stamps for at Least 700,000 Americans By Lauren Victoria Burke, NNPA Newswire Contributor

(Photo: iStockphoto / NNPA) The Trump Administration has finalized implementation of new work requirement rules that would cut food stamp benefits for 700,000 Americans. The average food stamp payout is $36 per month. Though the Trump Administration estimates that under 700,000 people will be impacted by their policy changes, the Urban Institute estimates that the new Trump Administration rule changes will cause 3.7 million poor people to lose food stamps. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Brandon Lipps, the deputy undersecretary for the USDA’s Food Nutrition and Consumer Services, spoke with
reporters for under 20 minutes regarding the changes. The rule changes will take effect on April 1, 2020. The work requirement rule change will cause hundreds of thousands of people to lose access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. There are over 40 million people in the U.S. living in poverty — 1 of every 7 Americans and 12 percent of the total population. In the U.S., 27 percent of African Americans live in poverty and 46 percent of African American children (under age 6) live in poverty, compared to 14.5 percent of white children.

The rule change would limit states and force them to restrict food stamp use to areas that have a 6 percent unemployment rate or higher. The national unemployment rate in October was 3.6 percent. Dr. Todd Heibel is involving students in regional air quality improvement effort. SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Students are learning about what it takes to breathe easier at San Bernardino Valley College. In recent years, the campus has become more active with South Coast Air Quality Management District and is on track to address the academic side of an environmental justice issue.
environmental studies and sciences. Dr. Heibel began looking more deeply into local air quality impact about 15 years ago following class visits from Todd Warden, a representative from SCAQMD. Last year, the agency funded the air monitoring sensors, which were placed on several campus buildings. He said it also provides a unique opportunity for students to access technology across several disciplines. Citizen scientists will also have a role to play in assisting SCQAMD. Through Geographic Information System (GIS), students will learn to assess air quality data, and analyze pollutants. The student-led effort will also collect data, partner with biology students, as well as any other students who want to participate. "We're also going to have some of our geography students, physical geography, weather, and climate students, incorporate weather station data," Dr. Heibel said. "We do really want to be as interdisciplinary as possible." Biology faculty are taking an interest in environmental studies. Eventually, Heibel said the campus is looking to start an environmental studies program, which could be a companion piece to the programming. Heibel has attended quarterly meetings with nonprofits, industry, and other community colleges, with a focus on environmental justice and partnerships. He feels the data can provide the foundation needed to lead to other academic enhancements and policy change. Through his classes, SCAQMD presentations engaged students on the agency's role in air quality, community partnerships, and the need to track bad air in the Inland area. He said the GIS maps presented by Warden were very compelling. Students learned that the basin exceeds federal limits for particulate and ozone pollution numerous days per year, and the epicenter is here in the Inland Empire, particularly on the SBVC campus. "We can see what the wind speed was,
the direction, and temperature pressure, etc., on the days when the ozone, particulate matter was absolutely terrible. And, was it within legal limits?" he said. Last year, SCAQMD sponsored a workshop in partnership with the SBVC campus that sparked great community dialogue, he said. In attendance were students, faculty, staff, administrators, and strong participation from local advocates, including the Sierra Club and CCAEJ founder and former director, Penny Newman. Through SCAQMD, community meetings are regularly held in the area, along with local activist Mary Valdemar, an SBVC representative, who led discussions in the fight for clean air. Exposure to the data may also lead students into adjacent lucrative fields of the future, to renewable energy, with several related components. The career potential is huge, including broad access to STEM, as well as other fields, such as the SBVC automotive program, which Heibel said is heavily invested in renewables. "It's wonderful that we have pioneers on campus that say we can bring non-diesel power alternative fuels to the logistics industry. We're not enemies of the logistics industry, but can we do this in a cleaner, smarter way?" The goal is to fully integrate the air sensors into the college curriculum, and get students to the place of data collecting, analyzing, mapping, publishing the data, and develop communication skills. The other benefit is they will gain valuable experience presenting the data at professional conferences. Most of all, students are learning to be better citizens. He said the process is by students, and for students - and by extension - it's by the community, and for the community. "What can we do to mitigate it locally? We're in the midst of this grand experiment of climate change. Part and parcel of that, our air quality is unacceptable," he said. When Brooklynn Evans was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2015, the only thing on her mother’s mind was figuring out how to save her child’s life. Tamisha McNeally, a Contra Costa resident, was soon met with the prognosis that her young daughter’s in-hospital treatment would last many months—six months to be exact. To be there for her daughter, she was going to need significant time off work. Tamisha was familiar with Paid Family Leave (PFL)—having utilized the program in 2009 to bond with a newborn Brooklynn— and
immediately consulted her employers human resource department. Unfortunately, the heartbreak for Tamisha continued as her employer alerted her that she didn’t meet the criteria for jobprotected leave. California’s PFL program does not include guaranteed job protection, which makes Tamisha’s story a reality for nearly 25 percent of the state’s workforce, which forces many people are forced to choose between caring for their families and keeping their jobs. Judy is a straight shooter, who tells it like it is and gives no excuses for her weight loss, weight gain or anywhere in between. Whatever she’s doing, it working–very well! Judy shares on her social media that she’s been able to keep her 70+ pound weight loss off for over three years. But don’t ask her how she did it, unless you want to know the truth. On her blog she warns: “This is a post for people willing to be honest with themselves and make some REAL lifestyle changes.” “I’m approached on a regular basis mostly via social media regarding my weight loss journey,” continues Judy. “People ask me for my exact meal and exercise plans and want me to write them a step by step plan for how to do what I did. With countless apps and Instagram pages devoted to beginner and unconventional fitness, it’s not hard to run across an in home workout to give a try. My favorite apps are MyFitnessPal (calorie tracker/ food diary), Freeletics (workout app featuring exercises that require little to no equipment) and I search Instagram on a regular for different exercises to keep my workouts fresh.” “I never treated my journey as if there was a deadline or an end date. Instead I approached it as a lifestyle change. I knew the changes I made would require my attention and effort if I wanted to truly live a healthy life. Now I understand for some, the goals aren’t that deep and perhaps a bomb ass dress for a wedding coming up or a birthday outfit you’ve had your eye on is the goal. Your Cancer Survival Rate May Be A Matter Of Participating In Clinical Trials, Or Not Health/Fitness News
Research has shown that cancer patients in rural areas have lower survival rates than those in urban areas. For example, cancer death rates between 2011 and 2015 were 180 per 100,000 people in rural areas and 158 per 100,000 people in urban areas, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But in the new study, researchers found that the survival rate gap shrank when urban and rural cancer patients were all participants in clinical trials. A review of cancer clinical trials contends that the differences in survival rates between rural and urban cancer patients may be due to the kind of care they receive. The study looked at nearly 37,000 cancer patients from across the United States who took part in phase 2 or phase 3 clinical trials between 1986 and 2012. The patients had any of 17 different types of cancer, including brain, breast, colon, leukemia, lung, lymphoma and ovarian and prostate tumors. In the five years after enrollment in the trials, there was no significant difference in survival rates between rural and urban patients for all of the types of cancer except one. Rural patients with estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative breast cancer didn’tlive as long as urban patients.
That may be due to a number of factors, such as timely access to follow-up chemotherapy after their first round of cancer treatment, according to the researchers, who are with SWOG, the international cancer clinical trials network funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute. “These findings were a surprise, since we thought we might find the same disparities others had found,” said study co-leader Joseph Unger. He is a SWOG biostatistician and health services researcher at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. “But clinical trials are a key difference here. In trials, patients are uniformly assessed, treated, and followed under a strict, guideline-driven protocol. This suggests that giving people with cancer access to uniform treatment strategies could help resolve the disparities in outcomes that we see between rural and urban patients,” Unger said in a SWOG news release. “If people diagnosed with cancer, regardless of where they live, receive similar care and have similar outcomes, then a reasonable inference is that the best way to improve outcomes for rural patients is to improve their access to quality care,” Unger concluded. Understanding available options from the beginning would have allowed me to spend valuable time tending Brooklynn during the most stressful time in both of our lives,” said Tamisha. PFL provides partial pay to employees who need to take time off from work to care for a seriously ill family member (child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or registered domestic partner) or bond with a new child entering the family through birth, adoption, or foster care placement. Employers do not contribute a cent to PFL—the program is entirely funded by employees through their payroll deductions. Since Tamisha had only been on the job for three months and was thus unprotected, she was ultimately laid off. As a single parent, Tamisha was faced with figuring out how she would pay her bills and take care of her daughter while she endured lifesaving treatments. Brooklynn needed her mother to dry her tears, calm her fears, and comfort her during those long days and nights in the hospital. She also needed her mother’s reassurance that she would be able to see again and walk again. The road
to recovery wasn’t easy. Today, Tamisha and Brooklynn are survivors. Brooklynn is cancer-free and living life as a healthy 10-year-old. Tamisha still struggles to fully understand why there isn’t consideration for workers, no matter their tenure, to care for seriously ill family members or a newborn baby. The fact that PFL does not offer job protections for all workers contributing to PFL, particularly for single parents, seems to be a glaring oversight. There is good news on the horizon, however. Governor Newsom is preparing to extend PFL benefits from six to eight weeks come July 2020 and has proposed extending job protection to all workers regardless of employer size. “It’s scary to find yourself facing homelessness due to reasons beyond your control. Your whole life changes when given a cancer diagnosis and it would be nice to not have to worry about how you will live and job security,” added Tamisha. Tamisha wants to be clear that she was never looking for handouts. Her experience has simply made her an advocate of why PFL expansion is necessary in more areas than just providing additional leave time. Bringing her story to the forefront is important to other single parents faced with unforeseen situations that do not fit the typical PFL mold and she hopes to challenge California legislators to do better to support hard-working caregivers such as herself.

SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to California Small Businesses Economically Impacted by the Severe Storms and Flooding State/Government News SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering lowinterest federal disaster loans for working capital to small businesses economically impacted by the severe storms and flooding in San Bernardino County that occurred Nov. 27 Dec. 1, 2019, SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza announced today. SBA acted under its own authority to declare a disaster following a request received from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s designated representative, Mark S. Ghilarducci, director of the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services on Feb. 12, 2020. The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties in California; La Paz and Mojave counties in Arizona; and Clark County in Nevada. “SBA is strongly committed to providing the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist California small businesses with federal disaster loans. We will be swift in our efforts to help these small businesses recover from the financial impacts of this disaster,” said Administrator Carranza. “Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred,” said Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West. “These loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Disaster loans can provide vital economic assistance to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing,” Garfield added. Eligibility is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. These loans have an interest rate of 3.875 percent for small businesses and 2.75 percent for private nonprofit organizations with terms up to 30 years and are restricted to small businesses without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship. The Inland Empire Small Business Development Center is offering free, personalized counseling to help affected businesses in their recovery. This Morning, has come under fire from many Twitter users and celebrities including Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and Ari Lennox after seeing the clip. King addressed the issue through a video posted to her social media accounts, defending herself and blaming her home network, CBS News.

I didn’t even know anything about it.” In the clip, King asked Leslie about Bryant’s sexual assault case which was eventually settled in 2005. During the interview, she says, “It’s been said that his legacy is complicated because of a sexual assault charge which was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you, as a woman, as a WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) player?” Leslie then responded, “It’s not complicated for me at all… I just
never see — have ever seen him being the kind of person that would be — do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That’s just not the person that I know.” Bryant’s untimely death in a helicopter crash last month revived the issue of the 2003 sexual assault, but King claimed that “last thing I would want to do is disparage him (Bryant) at this particular time.” Meanwhile, CBS said in a statement that King “conducted a thoughtful, wide-ranging interview” with Leslie but the clip that was posted “did not reflect the nature and tone of the full interview.” Their spokesperson added that they “are addressing the internal process that led to this and changes have already been made.”

Heaven on Earth Chris Davies Team Leader, Faith INFO (Faith Education, Innovation, and Formation) I believe that God is inviting us into visionary co-creation of worlds we do not yet know. I believe there are whispers of hope and moments that feel like fiction in the midst of the world that crushes us with a violent news cycle and puts people’s trauma on the front stage for games of politicking. I am seeking those moments in the midst of the preparation to move masses towards justice for all. What would you have done if you were there? What are you doing now? These are questions of eschatology, questions of the end of days and heaven on earth, the Day that it is here but not yet, the work for our granddaughters, and our ancestors. We are weaving in and out of time. History is overlapping itself and imploring, “What would you have done if you were there?” followed ever so closely with “What are you doing, now?” In January, the leadership team of UCC Justice and Local Church Ministries went to Alabama. We walked through the Birmingham jails where Martin Luther King, Jr. was held (and where people are currently incarcerated). We walked through the Civil Rights Institute and the 16th St Baptist church where four girls, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley (#saytheirnames) were murdered because of white rage. We listened to those narratives, hearing a lingering question in the background: what would you have done if you were there? We went down to Montgomery to the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. We spoke together about the clear line from the domestic slave trade of people of African descent
to the mass incarceration and the profit-driven industry of prison, the legal system, and policing. Therein lies the present question: what are you doing, now? This Black history month, I am aligning with the call for white folks to do our own work and to amplify the wisdom and work of leaders of color. What would you have done if you were there? What are you doing now? In the current time and place, how are we—how am I— acknowledging the systems, and the people who uphold them, profit from them, and witnessing them in silence? How do I show up and alongside whom? How am I moving resources and to what end do I put my energy? How do I—how do we—live in peace, knowing that people are still behind the wire? The large-scale work can overwhelm me, but it’s usually not about the big actions and reactions. It’s about all the small actions, every day. For a heaven on earth, a world beyond this one: gather the moments of hope. Imagine a world where all people are free. Find your own stake in the work, go internal and heal, take the time. Resist the systems that are designed to keep poor people poor and imprisoned. Invite people into a collective story that is amplified by our voices, our participation, our prayers, our work together toward a just world for all. Hold the hope and help hold up the healing for collective liberation. This is the call.
