To African Americans, President Barak Obama was a Golden Child, a spiritual entity, who brought truth to power and transformed America and the world. He will always be idolized by Black Americans as the first Black President of the United States, and that can never be taken away from his/our legacy. Many African Americans will state that they never expected in 2008, that a Black man would become president of the United States. The spiritual and religious side of the Black community would say that their prayers were answered, and Ex-President Obama’s election was divinely inspired. Similarly, many evangelicals believe that the only explanation for President Donald Trump’s 2016 victory was also “Divine Intervention.” “It truly explains the Trump victory, I have no doubt. No man can take the credit. Only the strong right arm of a merciful God. But that was in harmony with the believers interceding on behalf of the American election last night in Jerusalem, praying in concert with those of us praying in America,” says reporter Garth Kant of WND. It is obvious that this thinking was from White evangelicals, who made up 25% of all 2016 voters who supported Trump. The polls also showed that 52% of Catholics voted for the GOP, after most of them voted for ExPresident Obama in the previous
presidential elections. In 2016, President Trump had never run for a political office before. When evangelicals say they operate on biblical principles, but they vote for Trump, something is fundamentally wrong. When our founding fathers said they were people of faith, and the foundation of our civilization is the Bible, but a system of millions in slavery was created, we must ask the question, why? Would slavery be part of biblical teaching? The media has determined that President Trump has lied over 15,000 times in the last 3 years he has been in office. The most ironic thing about these records is most Trump supporters don’t believe they are true. As a result of the impeachment, more American support Trump than ever before. “And, prayers are so specific,” says Ex-Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) “We prayed for elections by county and cities and districts. We literally watched results follow the faithful effectual prayers of righteous people who had humbled themselves and cried out to God for his mercy. This wasn’t credit for us; this was clearly the Lord’s gracious doing.” For the last thousands of years, White people have believed they have a divine right to rule the planet through economics,
politics, educational right, and army’s might. With only 10% of the inhabitants of the planet identified as White, this group on the planet is preparing for war. Instead of preparing for climate change and ensuring that all Americans have excellent health care, the president is destroying the system and taking away our powerful standing in the world. At the State of the Union Address, the President gave one Black mother and her daughter a scholarship but refused to discuss how the administration plans to fix millions of Black students and schools that are decaying in inner cities. It is easy to talk about one brother who has benefited from an inner city program, but nothing is being done about mass incarceration of millions of Black men who are being destroyed by the system. If you are a conservative Black or White, and you believe that the economic system is working for you, just open your eyes. Companies are closing up all over the country, and technology is putting millions out of work. In the impeachment the Democrats proved that our president is a criminal, and he is destroying the quality of life in America. Don’t be fooled. The civil rights organization convened the meeting Feb. 5 through Feb. 7, at the Genesis Church in South Sacramento, where the Rev. Tecoy Porter - he also serves as president of the Sacramento chapter of NAN - is the pastor. “A special word of welcome must go to all our friends, family and generous guests who have traveled far and wide to be here with us,” said the Rev. Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is now a prison inmate in Texas By Matt Hamilton Staff Writer Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, once a respected law enforcement leader who was convicted of thwarting a federal investigation into his department’s violent, scandalplagued jail system, has reported to a Texas prison to begin a threeyear term behind bars. Baca, 77, arrived Tuesday at the Federal Correctional Institution La Tuna, a low-security prison outside El Paso, according to a representative for the facility. The start of his incarceration followed years of legal wrangling and was an ignominious coda to the career of a man who once led the nation’s largest sheriff’s agency and won plaudits for pushing inmate education initiatives and tackling issues of homelessness and mental health. The former sheriff, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, was sentenced in 2017 to three years in lockup after a jury found he oversaw the plan to interfere with the federal probe into inmate abuses in the county jail system and later lied to prosecutors about his role. The conviction was upheld by

Baca had remained free while his appeals were pending. “While Sheriff Baca’s trial and sentencing were replete with significant legal errors, Sheriff Baca approaches the sentence he will serve with the same humility and respect for the law that he demonstrated during his 50-year career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,”
said Nathan Hochman, his longtime defense attorney. Baca was the last in a group of Sheriff’s Department employees — from low-level deputies to Baca’s second-in-command — to be accused of playing a role in the 2011 scandal, which involved hiding an inmate who was an FBI informant and threatening to arrest the agent who was leading the investigation. Anyone who lends any credence to the idea that this unlawful outcome serves as a credible exoneration of Donald Trump is an enemy to the rule of law and the Constitution. The founders of this country never imagined that our democracy would be confronted with a corrupt president who would be aided and abetted in the coverup of his crimes by a coequal branch of government. Despite the fact that the House Managers presented an ironclad set of facts that Donald Trump did in fact abuse his power and obstruct Congressional investigations of his crimes, the Senate has utterly failed to do its job. This was not a credible trial. No witnesses were called. No evidentiary documents were presented. The jurors abandoned impartiality and openly colluded with the guilty defendant. The presiding justice remained silent in the face of unprecedented attacks on judicial norms. I applaud the courage of the 48 Senators – 45 Democrats, 2 Independents, and 1 Republican – who put their careers on the line
to protect and defend our nation from the most dangerous president our country has ever known. Each and every Trumpparty elected official who betrayed their oath of office and protected the deplorable interests of a conman over the interests of this country is a national disgrace who should be voted out of office without delay. The American people can rest assured that this fight is not over, and all is not lost. The Democratic House majority will continue to provide a check on this president. Each House committee chair will continue to conduct proper oversight of this administration. We will continue to fight in the courts and demand that our lawful subpoenas be upheld. Donald Trump has been impeached. His conviction was bipartisan. His acquittal was partisan. This is the legacy of Donald Trump, now and forever. His presidency is an utter failure and disgrace, and history will record it as such. California Census 2020 Campaign Announces Partnerships with BlackOwned and Operated Media Partners State/Government News
SACRAMENTO – Today, the California Census 2020 campaign announced expanding its outreach to Black Californians through a multimedia effort in partnership with Black-owned and operated media partners across California. Voice Media Ventures, a multimedia company and strategic communications firm, is working with these media partners, leveraging trusted messengers to motivate California’s hardest-to-count communities to participate in the 2020 Census. “We are attempting to move the needle to address the traditional issues of distrust and educational gaps around the Census that impact participation rates of the Black community in California,” said Ditas Katague, Director of the California Complete Count – Census 2020. “Through our trusted partners, we are creating a surround-sound strategy to help ensure the hardest-to-count Californians complete the Census form.” Voice Media Ventures has been leading community convenings and holding focus groups to assess Black Californians’ gaps in knowledge about the Census and what will motivate them to participate in the 2020 Census count. The information collected

The Black population has historically been undercounted in past Census enumerations and the state is committed to changing that trend. Last month, the campaign announced four Census Ambassadors who will leverage their voices and their networks throughout the campaign to educate and empower the hardest-to-count Californians to take part in the upcoming 2020 Census. California is considered the hardest-to-count state in the nation, with high populations of immigrants, renters, individuals living on homes without a broadband subscription, people living close to or below the poverty line, and children younger than five years old. SACRAMENTO – California State Treasurer Fiona Ma announced that a new CalABLE Visa® Prepaid Card is available to people with disabilities who hold CalABLE accounts. Account holders can use the card everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. "This a great step forward that gives CalABLE account holders a convenient new way to help manage their personal finances and become more financially independent," said Treasurer Ma. Account holders and their authorized legal representatives can choose to receive a card, which can be requested at the time they open the account or any time afterwards. Account holders can load funds onto the card by logging into their CalABLE accounts, requesting an ACH withdrawal and selecting "CalABLE Card" as the target account. The maximum balance cannot exceed $9,999 and purchases are limited to $2,500 a day. There is a $1.25 monthly fee for the card and additional fees may apply. "One of the most important aspects of the ABLE Act is that it allows account holders to use the funds in their accounts for the
everyday expenses of living a life with a disability," said Dante Allen, executive director of CalABLE. "The new CalABLE Prepaid Card makes it easy and convenient for account holders to access their funds where they already live, work and shop." CalABLE, which stands for California Achieving a Better Life Experience, is housed in the State Treasurer ’s office. It gives Californians and out-of-state residents the ability to save for disability-related expenses by putting money in a taxadvantaged savings or investment account, while protecting their eligibility for means-tested public benefits programs. After-tax contributions to a CalABLE account can grow tax-free when withdrawals are used for a broad range of Qualified Disability Expenses. Until recently, individuals receiving federal benefits like SSI have been restricted to saving only $2,000, which prevented them from planning for the future and in many cases, kept them in poverty. NAN kicked off the conference with a rally for education on the steps of the California state Capitol followed by a “Minister’s Luncheon” and awards ceremony at Genesis Church. Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego), chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus, welcomed NAN to the state Capitol. She thanked the organization for drawing public attention to the underachievement of African-American children in California, whose academic performance, she said, is on the “very bottom” among their peers of other racial subgroups. “It is heartbreaking. It is alarming. And we should be outraged,” said Weber, who told people at the rally that, in the 1920s, African Americans were the most educated racial group in most major American cities in the South and along the east coast. Members of NAN; students staff and students from the predominantly African-American Fortune Charter School; as well as Black legislators and others gathered on the lawn of the California State Capitol to participate in the rally themed “Black Kids Deserve Good Schools, Too.” “We went down to the state Capitol today to talk about education,” the Rev. Al Sharpton, president and CEO of the National Action Network told conference attendees. “Somebody has to start educating these babies at the early ages.” “You can’t get equality at the end, if you start unequal at the beginning,” Sharpton told conference attendees. The civil rights leader attended the event with his two daughters: Ashley Sharpton and Dominique Sharpton-Bright. Another education-focused highlight of the conference was the groundbreaking for a new Fortune charter school campus currently under construction on the property of Genesis Church. The playground at the school will be named after Stephon Clark, the former Sacramento High football
player who police officers shot and killed in the yard of his grandparents home in 2018. Fortune School is a network of taxpayer-funded public charter schools in California committed to closing the Black achievement gap. The NAN conference brought together hundreds of guests from Sacramento, around California, and neighboring states, including Washington, Nevada and Arizona. California Gov. Gavin Newsom attended the conference’s opening session. He said, like the United States, California is the only state in the nation that promises a “dream.” But that California dream, he said, “is predicated on social mobility. It is predicated on the recognition that we are all in this together. And, it goes without out saying: that dream is not a reality for so many.” “Good enough never is,” said the Governor, who promised the audience that the state is willing to do more with partners like NAN to address systemic issues that unite Californians like reforming the criminal justice system. He said he wants to reduce the probation term for ex-felons from five to three years. Staying with the conference’s education motif, NAN held a formal gala dinner Feb. 6, where the organization honored principals, other leaders and teachers from the top-performing predominantly African-American charter and traditional public schools across California. “There are 90 public schools in California that are predominantly African American. Seventy percent of them are in the bottom 25 percent,” said Margaret Fortune, president and CEO of Fortune School. “Today we look to the top for the example than can be emulated at all schools that are so challenged in serving African-American students at a level of excellence.” “We know if you want to solve a problem, you go to the source,” Fortune continued. “You don’t go adjacent to the source. You go to the very people who know how to do the work.

Singer Janelle Monae Reveals Pescatarian Diet Gave Her Mercury Poisoning Health/Fitness News

The pretty Hidden Figures star said in a interview with Glamour magazine that her beautiful skin was attributed in part to her “really great diet, you know, lots of vegetables and fish.” But now, she revealed that it’s because of that diet that she now has mercury poisoning. In an interview with The Cut, the singer and actress revealed that she is recovering from mercury poisoning which she attributed to her diet. “I started feeling my mortality,” Monáe said. A “pescatarian” or “pescovegetarian” diet is essentially a vegetarian diet that also includes fish as an additional protein source. A pescatarian diet packs many of the benefits of a plantbased diet, including leaner smaller fish and it builds up,” McDonald continues. “One of the reasons why larger fish like sharks, mackerel and large tuna have the most mercury is because the smaller fish don’t live long enough to accumulate higher levels.” Though a switch to a pescatarian diet can cause mercury to build up in the body, he notes that fish are also rich in the essential mineral selenium, which can offer some protection from mercury poisoning. “The nervous system is very sensitive to mercury. Permanent damage to the brain has been

Bailey The World Health Organization has officially declared the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak a "public health emergency of international concern." Already, over 560 people have died. Tens of thousands of cases have been reported in two dozen countries across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Hundreds of people in the United States are being tested for the infection. Fortunately, several U.S. companies are working to develop a vaccine. Two of those firms say they'll be able to begin testing in animals within a month. The fight against the Wuhan coronavirus is only the latest example of how crucial animal research is to medical advances. Yet just over half of Americans oppose animal research, according to the Pew Research Center. Perhaps an animal-derived coronavirus vaccine will change their minds. Coronaviruses are respiratory illnesses that incubate in livestock. Once these viruses cross the species barrier, from animal to human, they can be transmitted from human to human. Researchers believe the Wuhan coronavirus was first transmitted to humans from a live wildlife market that has since been shut down. They are working to trace the origin of the virus in order to better understand how it spread among wild animals, who in turn infected humans. The first major modern coronavirus outbreak came in 2003, with "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome" -commonly called "SARS." Emerging from southern China, SARS ultimately infected 8,000 people and claimed roughly 800 lives. Fast-forward to the summer of 2012. Another deadly coronavirus popped up in the Middle East. This variant -- "MERS," for
"Middle East Respiratory Syndrome" -- was especially vicious, killing one of every three people it infected. Research in animals has shown how the coronavirus that causes MERS can adapt to infect new species. One experiment involving 16 bat species discovered that the virus could not efficiently enter cells with receptors from the common vampire bat. After several generations, the virus eventually evolved to adapt to those vampire bat receptors. Scientists believe these and other findings related to the different types of coronaviruses could help develop a vaccine. Vaccines for many other diseases have their genesis in animal research. Consider the measles vaccine, which has saved about 20 million lives over just the last two decades. In the 1960s, scientists experimented with cell cultures extracted from chick embryos. They refined the vaccine over seven years of animal research before packaging it with vaccines for mumps and rubella in 1971. Or take the polio vaccine. After nearly 40 years of research in monkeys and mice, scientists produced an effective vaccine in the 1950s. That vaccine has prevented 18 million people from becoming paralyzed -- and saved the lives of an estimated 1.5 million children. In recent years, animal research has delivered vaccines much more quickly. In 2013, a vicious Ebola strain popped up in Africa and quickly grew into a pandemic. Existing treatments proved ineffective; the virus ended up killing 11,000 people. The Public Health Agency of Canada immediately set to work developing a better vaccine using research with macaque monkeys. That work has generated a miracle -- a new treatment that's 100 (continued in next 2 columns)

Some fish, including salmon, tuna and herring, provide healthy omega3 fatty acids which help reduce the risk of developing high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart problems. Vegetarian A person who identifies as a vegetarian abstains from consuming any type of meat including poultry, seafood, red meat and the flesh of any other animal. There are different versions of this type of diet that includes an ovo-lacto vegetarian in which this version of vegetarianism includes consumption of eggs anddairy; ovo-vegetarian – a person who eats eggs but not dairy; and lactovegetarian – a diet in which a person consumes dairy but not eggs. Depending on your beliefs, some vegetarians also refrain from by-products of animal slaughter. Some benefits of maintaining a vegetarian diet include decreasing your chances of developing kidney stones and lessening the risk of experiencing strokes, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Plant-Based Very similar to a vegan diet, individuals who choose to live a plant-based lifestyle avoid meat, dairy, eggs, gelatin and processed foods such as white flour and refined sugar. People who follow this lifestyle eat unprocessed or minimally processed vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, legumes, beans and whole grains.
To break the distinction between plant-based and veganism down a bit further, a vegan can eat Oreos, since in essence they are vegan, however, a person who follows a “plantbased” lifestyle may choose not to eat Oreos because it’s not a product that resembles it’s original plant form. Although a “plant-based” meal may be vegan by definition, a big difference between the two are a person who follows a plant-based diet is not necessarily a vegan which means they mayconsume only plant-based foods but may still wear or use products that are derived from animals. A plantbased diet can help with diabetes prevention and weight loss, improving heart health and skin health as well. Vegan Again, vegan and plant-based are strongly similar, except, being vegan is a philosophy devoted to animal rights that involves diets, ethics and politics. As a vegan, you not only eliminate animal food from your diet, but you also extend the elimination process across all aspects of your life. So, this means a vegan doesn’t use honey or beeswax because it’s derived from insects; any household goods, toiletries or beauty products or wear any type of clothing that derives from animals, such as leather, fur or silk if any of the products are tested on or derived from animals. Being a vegan can help you lose excess weight, lower your risk of heart disease and may protect again certain cancers. There are different options to help start your journey to living a life that doesn’t include eating land-based animals and plenty of benefits associated with each lifestyle. If you’re interested in starting any of these lifestyles, consult with your doctor and research to determine which option is a better fit for you.

From September 2017 through January 2019, nearly 900 black men were offered the freefingerstick blood test for diabetes. The researchers ended up testing 290 men. Their average body mass index (BMI) was 29.3. BMI is a rough estimate of body fat based on height and weight measurements. A BMI between 24.9 and 29.9 is considered overweight. A BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. Of those who had undiagnosed diabetes, about 62% were obese, the study found. The average age of the men with undiagnosed diabetes was 41. More than half of the men who didn’t take the test were willing to tell the researchers why. About half said they knew their health status or had been checked by their doctor, and 35% said they were healthy or they didn’t want to know their status. Eight percent said they were afraid of

Dr. Anthony Clarke, an internal medicine doctor in Detroit, said, “Not seeking medical care is a common problem in men, and it’s worse in the black community. With a lot of men in general, they think, if you don’t know about a problem, it’s OK. A lot of men tell me, ‘My wife made me come in.'” Clarke, of Detroit Medical Center’s Harper University Hospital, was not involved in the current study. “I think the barbershop was a good way to do this. If patients aren’t coming to you, you go where the patients are. The barbershop is a gathering place for men,” Clarke said. The researchers partnered with eight Brooklyn barbershops, all owned by black people. The neighborhoods were chosen because they had a higher

Hundreds of black men recently discovered they could get more than a lining or a fresh fade at their local barbershops. They were offered diabetes testing, too. A new study offered customers diabetes screenings at eight New York City barbershops. Among those who took the test, 10 percent learned they had average blood sugar levels that indicated type 2 diabetes. And almost 30% appeared to have prediabetes.

Other research has shown that if you find diabetes from a screening test rather than symptoms, you’ll have half the premature mortality rate than those who find out later,” Lee said. “I usually meet people late in the disease process at the [emergency department]. We need to startfiguring out ways to detect chronic diseases like diabetes earlier,” he added. Lee said he’s not sure if this approach would work in other cities or in more rural areas. The study results were published as a letter in the Jan. 27 online edition of JAMA Internal Medicine. As many of you know, March Air Reserve Base (MARB) has been hosting a group of 195 passengers who arrived at the base January 29 after arriving from China. They have been under a 14-day quarantine that is set to expire February 11. The group — many of whom work for the U.S. State Department or are related to someone who does — have been isolated from base personnel and were not permitted to leave the fenced quarantine area. Only official medical staff, such as health care workers with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and nurses from Riverside University Health System-Public Health (RUHSPH), have been in direct contact with the former passengers. They have conducted temperature checks and watched for possible symptoms. At the end of the 14day period, people who have not developed symptoms will have successfully completed their quarantine and will be free to leave. To date, no one has tested positive for novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) among the 195 in quarantine. Two individuals with symptoms were retested and also found to be negative, and have since recovered. We have heard your concerns about the evacuees on the base. Many of these concerns are reasonable. Unfortunately, some people with these concerns have taken them out on the families and households of people working at

A few base workers have even been accosted in uniform. This is not acceptable, and needs to stop. They pose no greater risk than anyone else. We understand your concerns about exposure to 2019-nCoV and Riverside County is committed to protecting the health and safety of its residents. We are working with state and federal partners to take every precaution to protect this community, and will take immediate action if any person being monitored develops symptoms of 2019-nCoV. In a Fox News interview, Carson also mentioned the need to support law enforcement in protecting communities from “people on the street who are not orderly individuals.” It’s words like those that cause some homeless advocates to worry that the feds will take both a carrot and a stick approach to the city’s homelessness. For Tommy Newman, senior director of impact initiatives at United Way L.A., policing homelessness, if that’s what HUD will ultimately demand, would run contrary to the “housing first” model — which prioritizes permanent housing with support services over temporary shelter — that Newman and other advocates support. “If [the feds] want to invest in
short term housing, we won’t say no to the money, because we do need that,” explains Newman. “But law enforcement-based solutions don’t work. It’s not the cop’s job to be case managers to bring people inside. Compulsion to come inside doesn’t work.” Newman says the federal government should play a critical role in addressing homelessness. “There is evidence that when the federal government steps up it can end homeless,” he says. One example of how federal help can succeed came when the Obama administration addressed veteran homelessness. In 2016, the White House announced that the number of veterans experiencing homelessness in the U.S. was cut by nearly half since the 2010 launch of a strategic plan called Opening Doors. “Back in the Obama administration it was normal to have a D.C. partnership,” Newman said. “With Trump that collaboration ended.”

convicted, including former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka, who was sentenced to five years in prison after a jury found he helped lead the scheme. Several other deputies were found guilty of civil rights violations for beatings of inmates and jail visitors. In 2014, as the department was engulfed in the jail scandal, Baca stepped down. At trial, federal prosecutors focused on Baca’s efforts to impede the investigation. Prosecutors told jurors that although Baca had ceded day-today handling of the obstruction plot to Tanaka, he was informed of its developments and helped shepherd it as the county’s elected sheriff. The plan, prosecutors argued, included manipulating potential witnesses in the federal inquiry and intimidating an FBI agent working on the case. In his closing words to the jury, the lead prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Atty. Brandon Fox, condemned Baca as a cowardly king who chose to protect himself while sending pawns and other underlings to do his “dirty work.”
President Trump once denounced Los Angeles for its sidewalk encampments and vowed to take action without consulting the city.
At first Baca had sought to plead guilty in a deal with prosecutors, but U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson dismissed it as too lenient and indicated he would impose a harsher prison sentence than whatever the plea deal outlined. Baca and his attorneys pressed ahead with a trial. His attorneys argued that Baca never authorized wrongdoing and that there was no hard evidence directly linking him to the obstruction scheme. Baca was nearly victorious in the first trial, when all but one member of the jury wanted to find him not guilty. The lone juror did not budge and Anderson declared a mistrial. For the second trial, prosecutors overhauled the case and Anderson issued a string of rulings that hamstrung the defense. The conviction and prison sentence further tarnished Baca’s legacy of nearly five decades of service, and diminished the reputation he once held as a law enforcement reformer. Garcetti met with Carson in Washington, D.C., late last month with the intention, according to the Mayor’s office, of bringing “new resources to Los Angeles to house more of our homeless neighbors through the
use of federal lands, new funds, and the wraparound support services they need to permanently come off the streets.” Garcetti did not specify how much money, what kinds of services and where the federal lands might be, nor what conditions, if any, HUD might demand. The Mayor’s office did not answer queries about the meetings with Carson and other officials. Carson’s invitation letter, however, indicated that the (continued in next 2 columns)

4 Little Known Black History Facts Black History News
Happy Black History Month! February is not only considered a month of love, but it’s a time of celebration for Black people around the world. We all know of many notable Black historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman, but there are many other events and figures that have made Black history across the country. Here are just a few:
The Fultz Quadruplets, Mary Louise, Mary Ann, Mary Alice, and Mary Catherine, were the first Black identical quadruplet babies born in the United States in 1946. The Quads were born in what was referred to as “the basement”, which was the Blacks-only wing of the North Carolina hospital.
1. American TV’s First Interracial Kiss Classic sci-fi tv show, Star Trek, shocked America in 1968 when the episode titled “Plato’s Stepchildren” featured an interracial kiss between Captain James T. Kirk and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. According to the plot, the kiss was forced by the telekinetic powers of outside forces. 2. Cheryl Mills, The First Black Woman To Speak During An Impeachment Trial During President Bill Clinton’s explosive impeachment trial in 1999, Cheryl Mills, a young attorney at the time, became not only the first woman to address the U.S. Senate, but
the first Black person in history to do so. Cheryl’sopening statements made note of President Clinton’s mistakes while also mentioning Clinton’s support of minorities and women among other things, essentially humanizing him in the eyes of the Senate. Many believe that her words swayed the Senate to acquittal. 3. Reuben V. Anderson, The First Black Supreme Court Justice In Mississippi In 1985, Reuben V. Anderson made history as he was sworn in as Mississippi’s first Black Supreme Court Justice. After
attending Tougaloo College and earning his undergraduate degree, Reuben attended Ole Miss Law School and graduated in 1967. He moved on to work with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on a number of significant cases such as desegregation and voter rights matters. In 1976, Reuben was appointed as a municipal judge for the city of Jackson in 1981, he was promoted to circuit judge and by 1985 he was sworn in to his new position as Supreme Court Justice 4. So don’t you ever think that you are smart enough to pull the wool over God’s eyes. You may be able to get away with deceiving people, but you cannot deceive God. Deception is always detected by God. You better know that you know! Lying to the Holy Spirit and lying to God extremely dangerous. Do not be like Saul, Nadab and Abihu, and Ananias and Sapphira. Obey the Word of God completely and make your entrance into the Everlasting Kingdom sure [2 Peter 1:1-11]. And why you at it, read [Psalms 2:9-12] a Scripture about vengeance. A Scripture that lets you know what happens when God says “Enough is enough!" It's a Scripture that reminds us that God is to be feared and revered. It’s a Scripture that lets us know that one day, Jesus is going to look over at His Father and say, "Let me have them Father" and the Father will grant the request of His Son. Judgment will be unleashed on the Earth. Sin will be dealt with. So if you want to escape the wrath of God: "Be wise!” Lying to the Holy Spirit and lying to God is extremely dangerous!

Former NFL Player Wins Oscar For “Hair Love” Lifestyle /Entertainment News
(Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images) It all started with viewing viral videos of African American fathers lovingly styling their daughters hair that sparked former NFL wide receiver Matthew Cherry to create a film that won an Oscar at the 2020 Academy awards. His film, titled “Hair Love” won in the animated short category on Sunday. Cherry wrote and directed the film, helping produce it alongside Karen Rupert Toliver. The film tells the story of a dad struggling to do his daughter’s hair because the mom as it seems to be ill and possibly losing her hair. He tries one hairstyle after another, not being able to get it right until a video helps him by taking him through the process step by step. It’s a really heartwarming story that not only charmed those who saw it, but also resulted in a children’s book and plenty of conversations about the importance of hair and heritage in the black community. “Hair Love was done because we wanted to see more representation in animation,” Cherry said during his acceptance speech. “We wanted to normalize black hair. There’s a very important issue that’s out there, the CROWN Act, and if we can’t help to get this passed in all 50
states it will help stories like DeAndre Arnold’s who’s our special guest tonight.” Arnold is a 18-year-old senior at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas who made headlines when his Texas high school suspended him and told him he wouldn’t be able to walk at graduation on the grounds that the dreadlocks he’d been growing since the seventh grade were “too long.” “I never thought that people like D-Wade and Gabrielle Union would be like on my side,” Arnold said in an appearance on CBS This Morning last week. Now, as he walks the red carpet with his family by his side, Arnold is sending a loud and clear message that loving your own hair is welcome at the Oscars. So how did Cherry do it? Many say thatit started with manifesting his own destiny. “I’m gonna be nominated for an Oscar one day,” he tweeted in 2012. “Already…claiming it.” “Any 3D artists follow me? I got an Oscar worthy short film idea to go with this image. Get at me,” he tweeted in 2016. With the win, Cherry became only the second former athlete to win an Oscar for best animated short. The other former athlete? The late Kobe Bryant. Rest in peace, Kobe.

On February 1, 1960, four North Carolina A&T University students who were deeply disturbed by the tortuous murder of Emmett Till sat down at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in downtown Greensboro, NC, challenging the restaurant’s “whites only” policy. Denied service, the four young men— Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil— refused to give up their seats. The Greensboro Four, as they came to be known, followed the nonviolent practices of Mohandas Gandhi and civil rights activists, ignoring the violent provocation of local law enforcement and customers. They stayed seated until the restaurant closed, then returned the next day with more students from area colleges. By February 5, the number of daily protesters at Woolworth’s had grown to 300, paralyzing the restaurant and surrounding businesses. By March, this movement had gathered massive media coverage and spread to 55 cities in 13 states to protest segregation in libraries, beaches, hotels and other establishments. What began as the effort of four students determined to change the racist reality of their community became a launching pad for community mobilization against racism everywhere. In response to the success of these sit-ins, dining facilities across the South were integrated by the summer. Four black Woolworth’s employees—Geneva Tisdale, Susie Morrison, Anetha Jones, and Charles Best—were the first to be served at the counter where it all began. I’ve come to believe both courage and compassion are contagious but the witness for justice begins at home. Movements for justice are not birthed on public platforms with
celebrity faces. Such is often a product of such momentum but never the impetus. Iconic public figures like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mrs. Rosa Parks, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Malcom X, Congressman John Lewis, and Governor Robert M. La Follette are the fruit of movement trees whose roots are the actions of courageous citizens who decide the unjust treatment of humanity is too great a burden to bear. So they begin to rise up, and sit down and march and sit in, but they all start at home. Recently, Justice & Local Church Ministries has partnered with RIP Medical Debt and UCC Conferences and local congregations to abolish medical debt for people living at or below the income threshold of poverty in communities we serve. We began in the Illinois Conference, working together to abolish $5.3 million in medical debt for over 5,000 families. Last month, we partnered with the Missouri MidSouth Conference, some Missouri churches, and the Deaconess Foundation to abolish $12.9 million in medical debt for over 11,000 families. Our next stop will be the Southern New England Conference, followed by the Central Atlantic Conference. In every case, the impetus is local church engagement in the communities they serve. The witness for justice begins at home and spreads abroad. Every quarter, from now until the 33rd General Synod, we will work with Conferences and local churches to abolish debt in every geographical region the United Church of Christ serves. We are hopeful to continue with others in building a movement concerned with burdens of health costs on impoverished families and communities. We can do this. We can be a part of changing our reality. We can be a part of telling this story. We can help lives and this planet, if we act with courage, if we rally our neighbors, if we challenge our state and local politicians, if we join this movement in our cities and our towns, because the witness for justice always begins at home.
