As the New Year approaches, it seems like every year is dubbed “a year like no other.” But 2017 truly was more dramatic than many other years in recent memory. In the last 12 months, we faced a renewed threat of nuclear war, debated whether to take a knee during the national anthem and resisted the temptation to look at the sun during the total solar eclipse. From increased tensions with North Korea, to a hurricane season unlike any other, to the bombshell allegations of sexual misconduct in Hollywood and beyond, take a look back at the key moments of 2017, as they were reported by NBC News. Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on Jan. 20, outlining his vision of a new national populism and reiterating the same “America First” mantra that delivered the White House to him during the 2016 election. In his first address as leader of the free world, Trump said his inauguration would signify a historic moment when “the forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.” After months on the campaign trail marked by partisan division and deep skepticism from his critics, Trump told thousands in the nation’s capital that his agenda was for every American — even as protesters demonstrated against him elsewhere in Washington, D.C., including some who clashed with police hours later. The next day, half a million marchers demonstrated for gender equality and against the new president during the Women’s March on Washington, brandishing pink hats and homemade signs in the streets near the National Mall. Now more than a year since his election, Trump is enjoying a healthy economy marked by lower unemployment numbers and strong stock market performance. But he has struggled to fulfill his many campaign promises with major legislation. Since his inauguration, the push to repeal and replace Obamacare has failed three times, and his plans to build a border wall and invest billions in infrastructure have been put on hold.

KCNA via Reuters American tensions with North Korea intensified rapidly since President Donald Trump was inaugurated in late January, as leader Kim Jong Un made no secret that his scientists are working on a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the U.S. Kim Im Ryong, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, bluntly warned that the Trump administration’s tough talk was creating “a dangerous situation in which thermonuclear war may break out at any moment.” The situation has become so dire that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asked China — Pyongyang’s neighbor and most powerful ally — to “use their influence to convince or compel North Korea to rethink its strategic calculus.” Tensions escalated in June when Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old American student, died days after being released from a North Korean prison in an unconscious state. The regime’s actions has led Trump and his administration to ratchet up the rhetoric, with the president in August promising “fire and fury like the world has never seen” if North Korea continues to threaten the U.S. Trump also disparaged the North Korean leader as a “rocket man” during his first address to the United Nations.

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images Bowing to public and congressional pressure, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller in May as a special counsel to conduct the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. More than five months later, Mueller’s office indicted President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and his longtime business associate Rick Gates on 12 charges, including money laundering, being an unregistered foreign agent and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts. The special counsel’s office also announced that day that it had struck a cooperation agreement with former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos, who secretly pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about his contacts with Kremlin-connected Russians. In early December, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty in federal court to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Russia, and agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s probe. The special counsel’s investigation is still ongoing.

Spencer Platt / Getty Images In early October, back-to-back bombshell reports in The New York Times and The New Yorker revealed that film mogul Harvey Weinstein allegedly lured women into hotel rooms and bars, and sexually harassed or assaulted them in what some have described as an open secret known for years in Hollywood. Later that month, after a tweet from actress Alyssa Milano, who was one of Weinstein’s accusers, social media was inundated with personal stories of being the victims of sexual harassment or assault, all using the hashtag #MeToo. Weinstein’s downfall has seemingly emboldened others to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against prominent men. In recent months alone, at least 30 powerful men in entertainment, business, politics and the news media have been publicly condemned for their alleged sexual misconduct and many have lost their jobs as a result, including Weinstein. “The Silence Breakers” of the #MeToo movement, who gave a voice to sexual assault and harassment survivors, have since been named Time magazine’s 2017 Person of the Year.

President Trump says the entire world has seen the signs that 'America is coming back strong' since he took office 11 months ago. (Dec. 18) AP President Trump vowed he would put “America First” in world affairs, even if it disrupted the way the world operated. And boy, did he. Here are 10 ways he snubbed world conventions and provoked international outcries: • Took call from Taiwan's leader As president-elect, Trump broke with diplomatic tradition and angered China when he took a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan's democratically elected president, Tsai Ing-wen. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, and the U.S. does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Trump later soothed mainland China's fury by reaffirming that the Communist regime in Beijing is the only legitimate government of the country. • Pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership On Jan. 23, his first official workday in office, Trump pulled the United States out of a major trade pact negotiated by President Barack Obama with 11 countries that border the Pacific Ocean, calling his move "a great thing for the American worker." The other nations vowed to push ahead on the agreement without the U.S. • Vowed to scrap NAFTA The same day, the White House said Trump would renegotiate the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada to stop U.S. companies from moving plants to its neighbors — particularly Mexico — and eliminating American jobs. If a new accord could not be reached that is fairer to American workers and reduces the U.S. trade deficit, Trump said, he would withdraw from the deal. Both U.S. neighbors have resisted major changes, and the talks continue. • Imposed travel ban Trump, in his first week in office, issued a travel ban on people
from eight countries, including six that have Muslim-majority populations. Federal courts blocked the ban, the list of countries changed, and the Supreme Court approved the latest version, which affects Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and Chad, while legal challenges continue. The ban has been decried by other countries around the world. More: Supreme Court allows Trump travel ban to take full effect • Battled NATO over money In his first meeting with NATO allies in May, Trump scolded their “chronic underfunding” of the alliance and refused to explicitly endorse the mutual defense clause of the treaty. In June, Trump affirmed the U.S. commitment to aid any of the 28 NATO nations if attacked. He did so after other NATO leaders said they were prepared to maintain a collective self-defense even without American support. • Pulled out of Paris climate accord Trump ordered the government in June to stop implementing the Obama-era Paris climate agreement, which called for the U.S. and other nations to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Trump, who has disputed a scientific consensus that human activity is causing higher temperatures, said he would be willing to renegotiate a deal "that's more fair" to the United States. Trump's actions, making the U.S. the lone holdout from the global accord, drew international condemnations from other leaders, who ruled out new talks. • Threatened nuclear war with North Korea Trump used incendiary threats about war with North Korea in August that departed from the more restrained language other presidents have used and sparked international fears of a catastrophic conflict. The victim of a fiery Rancho Cucamonga crash earlier this month has been identified as an 18-year-old from that city, coroner’s officials said. Shortly after 11 p.m. Dec. 13, Zaki Sharifi was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra south on Day Creek Boulevard approaching Church Street – just north of the Victoria Gardens shopping center – when he lost control and hit a traffic signal pole, according to San Bernardino
County sheriff’s and coroner’s officials in separate news release. The vehicle spun and came to rest by a bus bench, according to the sheriff’s release. Sharifi was ejected from the vehicle, according to a coroner’s news release. The Sheriff’s Department has said the engine was ripped from the vehicle and landed about 230 feet away.

Palm Springs (California) will remove a row of tamarisk trees blocking a historically African American neighborhood from the city-owned Tahquitz Creek Golf Course. At an informal meeting with neighborhood residents Sunday, Mayor Robert Moon, council member J.R. Roberts and other city officials promised residents they would remove the trees and a chain link fence along the Crossley Tract property lines as soon as possible. Many longtime residents of the neighborhood previously told The Desert Sun they believed the trees were planted for racist reasons in the 1960s, and remained a lasting remnant of the history
of segregation in the city. Residents said the invasive tamarisks, which block views of the golf course and San Jacinto mountains, have artificially depressed property values and prevented black families from accumulating wealth in their property over the past half century. Roberts apologized to the Crossley Tract residents for any wrongdoing by the city in the past and said he and the rest of the council wanted to make the necessary changes to ensure future generations didn't have to deal with the same problems current and past residents faced. In Palm Springs, California, trees once planted for 'racist' reasons will be removed...continued dents gathered for the meeting on a vacant lot on Lawrence Street. "I can't answer that. But guess what? We're here now." City Manager David Ready previously said estimates the city had received for removing the trees were about $169,000. Approval of expenditures over $20,000 have to go to the city council for the thumbs up, and city officials also have to figure out where, in a city budget stretched thin by rising public safety costs and hundreds of millions of unfunded pension liabili-
ties and retiree healthcare costs, that money will be allocated from. The Crossley Tract was founded by Lawrence Crossley, Palm Springs' first African American resident, in 1956. Crossley intended the 20-acre tract, which at the time was outside city limits, to be a place where black families who worked in Palm Springs but were barred from living there could live. City records indicate the area was incorporated into the city about a decade later, after Crossley's death.

Follow Black Women To VICTORY IN 2018 By Melanie L. Campbell
Melanie L. Campbell "It's a good night to be an African American woman," said CNN Political Commentator Symone Sanders on Tuesday night. This was her response to the historic Doug Jones victory over Roy Moore in the special Alabama Senatorial election. But Democrats and Republicans alike should take heed. Political pundits can parse words, slice and dice the numbers and call Roy Moore a "terrible choice" as the Republican candidate; but make no mistake about it, the African American vote was the critical difference between a win and a loss in that election. In his initial remarks to his followers, and the media, Senator-elect Jones unabashedly thanked African Americans in particular for their support. And why not? Exit polls indicated that 98 percent of African American women voted for him. In contrast, only 32 percent of white women in Alabama voted in his favor. The same political pundits tried to report that the women's vote is
what brought Democrats historic victories in the 2017 Election on November 7th in Virginia and New Jersey. The reality is not all women voted for the winning candidates in those elections. According to the 2017 Election Exit Polls, like they did recently in Alabama, Black women led the way in turning Virginia and New Jersey from red to blue, up and down the ballot. Conversely, the majority of white women voted for the Republican gubernatorial candidates in New Jersey and Virginia. The November 7th Exit Polls reported that Black women voted 91 percent for the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Ralph Northam, who was elected governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. White women voted 51 percent for the Republican candidate, Ed Gillespie. In New Jersey, Black women voted 94 percent for Democratic candidate, Phil Murphy, who is governorelect for New Jersey. Latino women voted 88 percent for Murphy and white women voted

A needy, 78-year-old widow in Richardson, TX gathered her husband's clothing and donated it to a local thrift shop run by Jewish Family Services but she apparently did not check the pockets of an old pea coat. But, a worker in the resale shop did and found four envelopes containing a total of $17,050 says the Association of Mature
American Citizens [AMAC]. The store tracked down the woman who donated the clothing and returned the money. She declined to be identified, but the widow said the cash would go a long way toward resolving financial problems she's been having since her husband's death.
Add Civil Rights Voices to Housing Policy Reform Discussions

Wherever you live, or household size, home is a special place where children are raised, and memories are made. Owning a home is also the largest, single investment that most families make in a lifetime. Since the nationwide housing crash, family outcomes have varied. While some households have witnessed full recovery, others – often people of color – wonder when or how they too can turn the proverbial financial corner. Now, nine national civil rights organizations are demanding to know why related deliberations of a key policy issue now underway with both the U.S. Senate Banking Committee and its counterpart, the House Financial Services Committee are being conducted in private: the future of affordable homeownership. “Our constituents represent the majority of future homebuyers, and any system that is not structured so as to ensure that they have fair ac-
cess to safe and sustainable mortgages will not serve the country well,” wrote the coalition to leadership of both committees on December 15. Signing the letter were: The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the National Coalition for Asian Pacific Community Development, the Center for Responsible Lending, National Fair Housing Alliance, NAACP, UNIDOSUS (formerly known as the National Conference of La Raza, National Urban League, National Community Reinvestment Coalition and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “At a time when the national homeownership rate is declining, and local rents are skyrocketing, every effort should be made to increase sustainable homeownership opportunity and make rental housing more affordable,” the coalition continued. “Alternative facts and false math should not be used to undo the access and (continued in next 2 columns)
44 percent for Murphy. To be clear, Black women have been the most loyal voters for progressive candidates for decades. In 2016, Black women voted 94 percent for Hillary Clinton; and white women voted 53 percent for Donald Trump. In 2013, Black women were the decisive vote for current Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, voting at 91 percent. White women voted for antichoice Republican candidate Ken Cuccinelli at 54 percent. In both 2008 and 2012, Black women led the way in electing President Barack Obama the first African American president of the United States. The Black women's vote, in fact, accounts for the gender gap in support of the Democratic Party as the majority of white women supported Republican candidates in both elections. So the question is---will Black women continue to be the most loyal voting bloc for democrats in the 2018 Mid-Term Election? I caution the Democratic Party to pay close attention to the recent Black Women's Roundtable/ESSENCE "Power of the Sister Vote" Poll (2017 BWR/ESSENCE Poll), released in September 2017 that gauged Black women's political attitudes. The 2017 BWR/ESSENCE Poll revealed an 11 percent drop in the "belief that the Democratic Party best represents the interest of Black women, dropping from 85 percent to 74 percent over the past year. In fact, more Black women think that none of the political parties represents them well, up to 21percent from 13 percent in 2016."
The poll also showed Black women millennials identifying as independents continues to rise. The poll further disclosed Black women have a significant interest in running for political office on a local level. The 2017 Election results appears to confirm that growing interest, with several Black women making history in key local and statewide races including Sheila Oliver being elected the first African American elected lieutenant governor of New Jersey; Vi Lyles elected first African American woman elected mayor of Charlotte, N.C.; Keisha Lance Bottoms winning the mayor's race in Atlanta; Andrea Jenkins, first African American transgender elected to the Minneapolis City Council; Mary Parham Copelan, first African American mayor of Forestville, Ga., and many more across the country. These changing political attitudes and trends provide an opportunity for the Democrats if they fully embrace and respect Black women's leadership as their most loyal base on a national, state and local level. It is also an opportunity for the Republican Party, if they choose to reverse course from being the party of the "Alt-right," white nationalists and white supremacists. Otherwise, Black women, especially millennials, will likely expand their options as independents or members of third parties in the future. So, for those progressives who want to win in the 2018 Mid-Term Election cycle, remember Black women are the "secret sauce" to victory -- Follow Black Women.

As a result, the entities created decades ago by Congress to reduce the cost of credit for low and moderate-income households has remained in government control. Now, as much of the housing market has recovered, questions are being posed as to when or how the two GSEs will return to private operations. Secondly, as housing costs continue to soar for renters and homeowners alike, affordable housing is a growing concern nationwide. Without an affirmative policy in place, many lowand-moderate-income consumers, as well as consumers of color could easily question whether fair access to mortgage credit will be possible for them. For their part, the civil rights organizations’ letter gave committee chairs a list of 10 items that if left unaddressed will trigger organized opposition: Align with and support longstanding federal anti-discrimination laws and enforcement; Provide adequate capital to protect taxpayers and housing system; Serve all credit-worthy borrowers; Eliminate and ban excessive risk-based pricing; Serve all markets across the country throughout the business cycle; Require utility regulation and expand restrictions that prevent risky behaviors; Ensure equal treatment for small lenders; Promote cost-effective loan modifications; Strengthen FHA and preserve low down payment mortgage loans; and Address the federal
government’s history in fostering racially discriminatory mortgage lending policies. Historically, Blacks and other consumers of color have experienced difficulties accessing private, conventional mortgage loans. According to the most recent data from the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, Blacks and Latinos together received only 9 percent of 2016’s 2,123,000 conventional mortgage purchase loans in 2016. The data additionally shows that Blacks alone received just 3.1 percent or 65,451 of these loans, the ones that come with fewer fees and are the most cost-efficient over time. By contrast, Black mortgage borrowers received 142,329 out of 866,000 Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans during the same year. Should housing finance reform fail to preserve access and affordability in mortgage lending, these data points could worsen and become even more disproportionate. For Nikitra Bailey, an EVP with the Center for Responsible Lending, a firm commitment to affordable housing goals are essential to any housing policy discussion. “The GSEs’ affordable housing goals have made a tremendous impact on helping credit worthy borrowers purchase homes,” noted Bailey. “They are also a metric for accountability to address underservice to important and often excluded market segments, including people of color, low and moderate-income families, and rural communities. The goals must be strengthened and fully enforced, not rolled back.” Similarly, the nation’s oldest minority professional real estate organization echoed Bailey’s concerns in a report released earlier this year. “We must remain vigilant,” said Ron Cooper, president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers in the foreword of the organization’s report, 2017 State of Black Housing in America. “We must continue to ad-vocate that the GSEs stay true to their intended mission to promote homeownership and adhere to the housing goals and Duty to Serve Clause.”

December 26, 2017 Governor Edmond G. Brown, Jr. announced on Saturday that he had granted 132 pardons and 19 commutations. Kim Carter, among those that were pardoned, was recently honored as one of Ebony's Power 100, most influential African Americans in America and in 2015 she was named one of CNN's Top 10 Heroes, a very prestigious honor given to individuals who unselfishly dedicate their lives to helping others. Released from the California Institution for Women's prison on April 17, 1994, Kim made the ultimate decision and decided to enter a rehabilitation program instead of returning to the home where her daughter and other family members resided. What began as an opportunity to live drug and alcohol free quickly turned into a host of therapeutic counseling sessions and finally an acknowledgement that the childhood abuses she suffered had been a major cause of the substance abuse addiction. Fast track forward, Kim rebuilt her life and in 2002 started the Time for Change Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless women recover from the effects of incarceration, homelessness and drug addiction. Since its inception, the foundation has helped over 1,020 women reach self-sufficiency and has reunited 256 children from foster care with their moms. Time for Change Foundation's mission is to empower disenfranchised low income individuals by building leadership through evidence based programs and housing to create self-sufficiency and thriving communities. "I am so happy that God put it on the heart of Gov. Brown to recognize that I paid my debt to so-

When asked, what will she do now, Kim stated, "If you get a new car the first thing you would do is test it out, so I'm going to test it out". The review process for Kim's pardon required several layers of screening which began with her Certificate of Rehabilitation in 2005, then the Board of Parole Hearings in August, 2017 and because of her multiple felony convictions, her case was transferred to the California Supreme Court where she received a recommendation from the majority of the justices in November, 2017. When a pardon is granted, the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are notified so that they may update their records on the applicant. The pardon is filed with the Secretary of State and the Legislature, and it is a public record. Municipal electric utilities can be independent By Katie Rock, katier@cfra.org, Center for Rural Affairs When it comes to rural development, the town of Bloomfield, in southeast Iowa, is holding its own, and can act as a model for other municipal electric utilities. A 2014 study concluded Bloomfield (population 2,643) could become energy independent in its use of electricity by 2030. The city council is now pursuing a combination of efficiency upgrades and investments in clean, renewable energy. In the study, six strategies are summarized to achieve energy independence. The first strategy focuses on implementing a comprehensive set of energy efficiency programs that would reduce electricity use by 23 percent over 10 years. The next set of strategies would use diesel generators and other equipment to help reduce peak loads. The remaining strategies outline how Bloomfield could achieve 50 percent, 75 percent, or
100 percent of its electricity through solar and wind. For 100 percent independence, Bloomfield would need to add 11,400 kilowatts (kW) of solar power, two large wind turbines, and 130 kW of microturbines over 10 years. The installation of wind and solar power generation would bring an estimated $35 million of investment and new jobs in construction and maintenance of projects. Bloomfield offers an alternative to rural development that combines community engagement with investments leading to broad savings and environmental benefits for the public, including property owners, residents, and schools. Rep. Torres Amendment Addresses Increased Threat of Landslides Due to Wildfires Government News WASHINGTON, DC— Rep. Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement following the passage of her amendment to the National Landslide Preparedness Act. “Many don’t know that wildfire activity increases the risk of landslides and flooding,” said Torres. “My amendment is a small addition to the National Landslide Preparedness Act, which simply states that we should also address and study potential landslides in relation to wildfires. California has experienced a great deal of landslides that have crippled our infrastructure; from this year’s Mud Creek landslide to La Conchita’s 2005 mudslide that killed seven adults and three innocent children. By giving state and local governments the resources to identify burned areas that become susceptible to landslides post-wildfires, we can begin to make the necessary plans
to stop the next catastrophe.” Wildfires severely damage forest canopy and vegetation, both of which hold the soil in place; this amendment will study and analyze these areas. This year alone, wildfires have damaged more than 15,000 structures, scorched over 234,000 acres of land, and have killed 45 people. Torres added, “As our brave first responders continue to work around the clock, it’s our responsibility to start thinking about the aftermath of wildfires to help prevent future loss of life and property.” Earlier this month, the Natural Resources Committee unanimously passed Rep. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Covered California updated its enrollment data on Wednesday and alerted consumers to a key deadline that is approaching. While the open-enrollment period has ended in most states, uninsured consumers in California have until midnight on Dec. 22 to sign up if they want their coverage to begin on Jan. 1, 2018. “The time is now to ring in the New Year with a quality health plan that provides protection and peace of mind,” said Peter V. Lee, executive director of Covered California. “We have seen thousands of people signing up every day as we near this key deadline, and Covered California wants to make sure everyone knows that time is running out to get health coverage that starts on Jan. 1.” The latest data shows that more than 220,000 new consumers signed up for coverage through Dec. 15, which is about 10 percent more than last year, when 199,000 consumers selected a plan during the same time period. In addition, approximately 1.2 million existing Covered California consumers have had their coverage renewed for 2018. With the continued health care policy debate at the federal level, Covered California also noted that the individual market faces significant uncertainty in 2019. Three of the main causes of this uncertainty are: Repeal of the individual mandate penalty: Repeal will take effect in 2019, and could threaten the individual market in many states. Health insurance companies rely on certainty when setting their rates, and may decide to exit their markets in the face of an uncertain market caused by a shrinking pool of consumers who are less healthy. Lack of federal marketing: Health insurance needs to be sold, particularly to young and healthy individuals who are less likely to feel compelled to purchase coverage on their own. The federal administration significantly reduced the marketing and outreach budget for the current open-enrollment period, which could lead to fewer consumers enrolled, a less healthy risk mix and higher premiums for consumers. Recent executive order: The president’s executive order called for regulations that would allow the sale of “association health plans” or “short-term plans.” Depending on how these regulations are structured, these plans
could skim healthier individuals off the individual market and leave consumers without comprehensive coverage. Not only would these consumers be enrolled in “Swiss cheese” policies that were common prior to the Affordable Care Act, those left in the exchanges would see higher premiums because of a less healthy consumer pool. Without federal action to offset the destabilizing effects of these issues, Covered California estimates that between 10 and 20 states could be left without any carriers in their exchanges in 2019. Consumers in the remaining exchanges could also face dramatically higher premiums, particularly those who do not receive any financial assistance. During its December board meeting, Covered California discussed several federal policies that could make a difference in stabilizing individual markets across the country and noted that now is the time for bipartisan efforts to protect consumers and lower premiums. These policies include: Reinsurance or high-risk pool: Implementing state-based risk stabilization programs such as reinsurance or invisible high-risk pools is the focus of bipartisan legislation proposed by senators Susan Collins and Bill Nelson. If appropriately structured and funded, it could reduce premiums by between 10 and 12 percent in 2019, while providing the certainty health carriers need to remain in markets. Federal marketing commitment: Other bipartisan legislation proposed by senators Lamar Alexander and Patty Murray includes provisions that would require the federal government to spend $100 million annually to promote enrollment. While Covered California relies on its own funding to invest more than $100 million in marketing and outreach, federal proposals like this would inject stability into states that rely on the federally facilitated marketplace. Restore cost-sharing reduction (CSR) funding: While many states developed a workaround to compensate for the cancellation of re-
imbursement payments to carriers that provide low-cost services to low-income consumers, it is an imperfect solution that is less effective and actually costs the federal government more through increased tax credit spending. The Alexander-Murray proposal would restore this funding. Removing the health insurance tax: The removal of this tax, which is included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, would lead directly to lower premiums. Those elements remain in place.” Covered California also wants consumers to know that while the enrollment deadline for most states was Dec. 15, Californians will have through Jan. 31, 2018, to explore their options and select a plan that best fits their needs. While consumers can sign up for coverage in the month of January, if they wait until then, their coverage will not start until Feb. 1 or March 1. A recent Covered California analysis found that the net monthly premiums for enrollees who receive financial help are on average 10 percent lower than what new and renewing consumers paid last year. The lower prices are a result of more financial help being available for consumers who qualify for assistance. The Affordable Care Act is designed to protect consumers
by providing more premium tax credits when premiums rise. “With the deadline of Friday, Dec. 22, to get coverage that starts Jan. 1, we want to make sure that consumers know about the increased financial help that is available to help bring health care coverage within reach,” Lee said. Since 2014, more than 3 million people have purchased health insurance through Covered California, and nearly 4 million have enrolled in the state’s Medi-Cal program. Together, the gains have cut the rate of the uninsured in California from 17 percent in 2013 to a historic low of 6.8 percent as of June 2017. They can explore their options and find out if they qualify for financial help by using the Shop and Compare Tool. Congress is now 83 days past the deadline to extend funding for CHIP and states continue to take extraordinary measures to try and protect the children and families relying on this popular, bipartisan program. How To File a Fictitious Business Name in California You must register an assumed name within 40 days of starting to conduct business (which can be different from the date of forming your business entity). For 30 days after registering, you must run a weekly notice in a newspaper of record for the county, and attest this afterwards by affidavit to the Clerk. The registration must be renewed every 5 years, but newspaper publication is not required unless details have changed. Registering a fictitious business name does not create a business entity. The document is actually known as a "statement" and it purely creates a record that gives the general public a way to know who they're dealing with, as well as allowing formal process to reach through a brand name to the legal structure underlying it. Additional statements can be filed to record that the assumed name has now been abandoned, or that a partner has withdrawn from a partnership operating under a fictitious business name, and is no longer to be connected with that name. FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME REQUIREMENTS A fictitious business name cannot be the same as a name already in use, or so similar as to confuse or mislead. And while certain legal designations such as "Inc" and "LLC" cannot be used unless you are such an entity, certain unsupported designations such as "Company" or "Ltd" are allowed in California. If you're a self-employed contractor, you're a sole proprietorship by default, and the name of the legal "entity" doing business is you, under your name. You can use a business name that includes your surname without needing to register a fictitious name - for example, "John Doe Cars". But to obscure the name ("JD Cars") or to imply more owners or a different structure ("Doe & Sons", "Doe & Associates", "Doe Company") will require recording the name as an FBN. Frequently a sole proprietorship will do business under a fictitious name for ease of transactions. A partnership is also legally named from its owners' names, and will often make a similar choice. Filing an FBN will usually be necessary before a bank will open a business account under the assumed name. Obviously a business wants to receive payments made out to its trade name - and this is increasingly common with Internet domain-name branding, when many business names have a “DotCom” attached to them. Corporations and LLCs can choose their business name when they file their Articles to form the entity. But frequently they'll want to adopt a different name, or many such names, for branding or trademark reasons. If a company is launching a new product or service, marketing decisions may call for a new brand name. Or, if John Doe Texas wants to expand operations into California and finds John Doe California already in business use, a new fictitious business name will be required. HOW TO REGISTER YOUR FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME State law (California Business And Professions Code Sections 17900-17930) requires you to register with the Clerk of the county housing your principal place of business, or with San Bernardino County if you're an out-of-state company. There's no limit to the number of names you can register, provided they're available and meet relevant criteria. The recording fee is set by law , but individual counties will vary . San Bernardino County, for example, charges $55, and $10 for each additional name in the same filing. Registration forms also vary by county. Best Films Battle of the Sexes (***1/2) In the 1970s, Grand Slam tennis champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and over-the-hill tennis pro Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) duke it out in the pivotal tennis match of the century. Their battle is stil socially relevant today. Stone brings King’s raw courage to life and the dawning of her new sexual identity is profound. Carell gives Riggs the right dose of bluster. Well directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valarie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine). Coco (****) This Americanmade animated film shows such great respect for Mexican culture. It takes you to unimaginable places where humans and spooky creatures collide all synched around the holiday Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos). Rich palette of colors. Lively musical score. Firmly and affectionately voiced by Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Gael García Bernal and Renée Victor. Co-directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina. A joy to watch. Crown Heights (***1/2) Everyday heroes are on view in this simple yet courageous story about two friends whose bond is stronger than a crooked Brooklyn District Attorney. In the wake of misguided films like “Detroit,” “Crown Heights” is a godsend. Director/writer Matt Ruskin’s understated style makes the film seem real. Lakeith Stanfield shines in the lead as a wrongfully convicted suspect. Nnamdi Asomugha plays the friend who never gives up on him. Pure inspiration. Crown Heights, Amazon Studios Darkest Hour (****) Sure, Gary Oldman chews up the scenery as the stalwart Winston Churchill in this World War II film about Germany’s impending invasion of
Britain. He deserves an Oscar for his interpretation and so does his makeup man who turns the slim actor into the stout world leader. Brilliant direction by Joe Wright. Smart script by Anthony McCarten. Superb cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel. Darkest Hours, Focus Features Get Out (***) It’s quite surprising and fresh that in his first outing as a filmmaker, Comedy Central star Jordan Peele gets so much right about the art of making a drama/horror movie. Aptly he captures that insular foreign feeling black people have when they are in a room full of awkwardacting whites. Then he cranks the horror up a notch to a high crazy/ weird decibel. Daniel Kaluuya is the face of the common man. Milton “Lil Rel” Howery is his hysterical wingman. Best First Film of the year, hands down. Get Out, Universal Pictures Girls Trip (****) This hilarious and relentlessly bawdy take on a girls’ weekend reunion in New Orleans is a cross between Bridesmaids and The Hangover, only more outrageous. Praise to screenwriters Kenya Barris (TV’s Black-ish) and Tracy Oliver and director Malcolm Lee. Rain accolades on Tiffany Haddish for her impressive comedy chops and equal doses of love to Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah for giving us a great laugh. Best Comedy of the Year. Girls Trip, Universal Pictures In the Fade (****) A mother (Diane Kruger) loses her child and husband in a bombing in Germany and she seeks justice and revenge. The sociopolitical aspects of the racist attack against her Kurdish-born husband are so topical it’s as if the movie was ripped from a newspaper headline. Director Fatih Akin also wrote the screen adaptation of a novel by Hark Bohm. Riveting from beginning to end. Lady Bird (****) A precocious high-school student, Christine (Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn), goes by the name Lady Bird and is in a constan verbal battle with her pessimistic mother (Laurie Metcalf, TV’s Roseanne). The White House has confirmed her resignation effective Jan. 20. The official White House reason was that she is leaving to pursue "other opportunities."
"Thank you Omarosa for your service! I wish you continued success," says a Dec. 13 tweet from President Donald Trump, who had handpicked Manigault Newman - best known for her first name only. A personal friend of Trump's, they have known each other 14 years since her national television debut on his reality show, "The Apprentice." The people of Billings, Montana and many others throughout history have proven that when we stand together for love, respect, justice and equality we can transform our communities and world. In December of 1993 a paving stone was hurled through 5-yearold, Isaac Schnitzer's bedroom window in Billings, Montana. His window had been decorated for the season with a menorah, Star of David and "Happy Hanukkah". The incident was one of a string of hate crimes 24 years ago in Billings, where the Ku Klux Klan distributed fliers, a Jewish cemetery was desecrated, and the home of a Native American family was painted with swastikas. Thousands of Billing's citizens, including the faith community, government leaders, labor unions, and community organizations rallied to stand up for their Jewish neighbors and others who had been targeted. Thousands of paper menorahs were placed in the win-
persons in the United States and more than 325 globally, the demonizing of immigrants, the unveiling of sexual assaults… And also, the countless ways in which people kept showing up to bring solidarity, public witness and action, working to transform the hatred and violence with love and justice. Like the people in Billings in 1993, we know we are better than this and we know if we stand together, we can stop the hatred and violence that plagues our communities, our politics, our nation and world. December 25th is an important day in the religious calendar, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, whose life and ministry, death and resurrection are at the heart of the Christian faith. I am reminded again this Christmas of his humble birth and servant ministry, placing love at the center of everything. I continued to be empowered and inspired by a core value expressed in my own denomination,

Erica Garner, 27, daughter of Eric Garner—the 43-year-old Staten Island N.Y. man who was killed in 2014 when NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo restrained him with an illegal chokehold—is in a coma after suffering a heart attack on Christmas Eve. Emerald Snipes shared her sister’s condition on Facebook: Erica, a mother of two, is reportedly unable to breath on her own, the NY Daily News reports. Esaw Snipes-Garner, Erica’s mother and Eric Garner’s widow, said her daughter’s heart attack was brought on by a severe asthma attack. This is the second heart attack that the 27-year-old activist has suffered; the first one occurred after she gave birth in August to her son Eric, named after her father. It was then that doctors discovered that Erica had an enlarged heart. “[She] is still with us,” SnipesGarner told the News. “She’s fighting. The doctor says she has a strong heart.” Someone who identified themselves as one of Erica’s workers tweeted from her official Twitter account and asked followers for prayers. Erica became a fierce oppositional force against state-sanctioned violence after NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo killed her 43year-old father on July 17, 2014 by placing him in an illegal chokehold. A few months after her father’s lynching at the hands of the NYPD, Erica staged a “die-in” on the same Staten Island N.Y. corner where Eric Garner took his last
breath. “I can’t breathe,” Eric Garner’s last words, became a rallying cry for a movement that would intensify even more just three weeks later in the wake of Michael Brown’s extrajudicial killing in Ferguson. When NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, citing an archaic law, refused to release Panteleo’s disciplinary record, Erica blasted him on social media, making it clear that having a black wife and black children does not mean that de Blasio has genuine love for the black citizens he claims to serve. In December, 2014, a grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo, who had a history of violently targeting black men. Kenneth Smith and Rylawn Walker both filed lawsuits against Pantaleo in federal court claiming that not only did Pantaleo lie about the men being in possession on marijuana—charges that were later dropped—he also subjected them “to a degrading search of his private parts and genitals,” according to the lawsuits. Since Erica Garner first stepped on the frontline seeking justice for her father, she has also been vocal on the war on drugs and has heavily criticized the Democratic Party for their apathetic so-called pragmatism in the face of rampant police brutality and systemic oppression in occupied communities. She is a warrior making her father, her family, and her community proud. Our thoughts are with Erica and the entire Snipes-Garner family as we await news on her condition.

But, then she added, "But when I have a chance to tell my story to tell - quite a story - as the only African-American woman in this White House, as a senior staff and assistant to the president, I have seen things that have made me uncomfortable, that have upset me, that have affected me deeply and emotionally, that has affected my community and my people and when I can tell my story, it is a profound story that I know the world will want to hear," she said, leaving an obvious cliffhanger. Omarosa was reached to obtain responses on issues raised in this article, but she declined comment due to the fact that she is still a White House employee until Jan. 20. She was only allowed the interviews with ABC News. Black Republicans say Omarosa blocked them from jobs. Meanwhile, Black Republicans claim Omarosa blocked them from jobs in order to maintain her status as the "only AfricanAmerican woman... senior staff and assistant to the president" as she described herself on ABC. Her actual White House title has been assistant to the president and director of communications in the White House Office of Public Liaison. But her actual job description appears not to have been clearly defined. In interviews with the Trice Edney News Wire Black Republicans blame her for blocking Black job applicants from the Trump administration - including Republican stalwart Kay Coles James, who was appointed Dec. 19 as the first African-American and first woman president of the conservative Heritage Foundation. "I was blocked personally. Essentially, my file was pulled and I wasn't deemed pro-Trump enough," says Eugene Craig. "The official excuse was that I wasn't proTrump enough although I was the sitting chair of the Maryland Republican Party." Sources said because of President Trump's need for loyalty, that attribute - loyalty - was among the top considerations for
Eugene Craig key White House positions. Craig admits that he was a "never Trumper all the way", but that was during the campaign. Craig says he noticed that when the time came for consideration for jobs and the broad banner of Republicanism, White neverTrumpers were given consideration where African-Americans were not. "The flood gates were opened, but Omarosa held all of us to a different standard. She had say over a lot of the Black resumes. I know for a fact from promises that she made us directly." Craig says a January conference call with the Republican National Committee and Trump transition team was held "specifically for African-American activists and party loyalists." He said, "During the middle of the call, she jumped on and bogarted on. And she came in and she made us these promises that this would be the most diverse administration in history. And she'll help us with whatever we need and wherever we wanted to go into government and to shoot our resumes over to her and she gave us her official transition email. She said this administration has a goal of having 25 percent minority hiring. They wanted 25 percent of the work force to be Black and Hispanic...So she positioned herself as the end all be all for Black things; for Black people in the administration," Craig said. Ayshia Connors, a former deputy director of African-American engagement at the Republican National Committee, now a senior advisor to Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (RPa.), agrees. She describes an initiative by The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and Insight America, an organization headed by former Republican Congressman J. C. And when President Trump got elected, all of those names were submitted and Omarosa literally trashed those names. Nobody got a call back. Nobody got an interview. PHOTO: InsightAmerica4u.com Nobody was ever heard about again. People tried to go in. People were eager and willing to serve the President, willing to serve our country. But Omarosa, she didn't want other Black Republicans there. She wanted to be the big shot. She wanted to be the only one. And so, everybody kind of just decided it wasn't worth our times to keep dealing with it. And so, by February, people had just moved on from Omarosa and dealing with the White House and decided to start working with Congress and dealing some other policy matters." Connors added that Kay Coles James, former Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources under Virginia Republican Gov. George Allen and director for the United States Office of Personnel Management under President George W. Bush, received the same treatment.
Kay Coles James "She was willing and prepared to go back into the government and to help the administration. But Omarosa was such a distraction and created so much drama and confusion that Ms. James just decided not to engage it anymore. So that's what ended up happening. That's why you only saw Omarosa as a senior Black Republican in the White House." In a brief interview with James upon her appointment as president of the Heritage Foundation, James was clear about why she did not go to work in the Trump White House. "When Donald Trump said that he wanted to improve the urban areas and that he wanted to make the lives of minorities in this country better, I said, wow, if he wants to do that, I genuinely want to be a part of that and I was excited and hopeful the opportunity to come in," she said. "But that
opportunity never really afforded itself. I am told that I was blocked...I don't have specifics about how that happened, but I was extremely disappointed that I didn't have the opportunity to serve there." Connors said the clearest evidence that Omarosa was not going to work with other Black Republicans came in February when Omarosa was in charge of pulling together the Black History Month program for President Trump. "During Black History Month, these credible Republicans such as Kay Coles James and J. C. Watts and Elroy Sailor, they tried to engage Omarosa." Instead, Omarosa put an event together that included her personal picks of African-Americans, including Black Democrats, Connors said. "She didn't invite any of the prominent Black Republicans. In fact, we had folks calling us from the White House calling and saying, 'Why aren't your names on the list for this event?' It was very evident from the beginning that she wasn't going to work with us and that she was just going to do her own thing." Connors cited another event for Vice President Pence that was planned by Black Republicans to be held at West Point. "That was another example of Omarosa using her position in the White House to block that event as well. And that was actually the turning point for Black Republicans. We decided she was just too distracting too disruptive and we decided to focus our efforts elsewhere." On the record sources willing to speak in defense of Omarosa were difficult to find. But, high placed Republican sources say it is not possible that Omarosa could have made such powerful decisions without oversight in the White House - most likely the President himself. Other high Republican sources said James was offered positions, but Omarosa fought against any Black staff appointment that would be above her own. Yet another rationale for why some Black Republicans seeking employment were rejected may have been because they had left the Republican National Committee Headquarters in protest against treatment by then RNC Chairman Reince Priebus nearing the end of the presidential campaign. Priebus then became President Trump's first chief of staff and was likely adverse to hiring the same staffers who had left the RNC, one source said. Christopher Metzler, an active member of the Black GOP Coalition, who has long worked Republican policy and strategy, had one answer when asked why there were no long time Black Republicans hired as White House staff. "It's very simple. Omarosa," he said. "Somebody like Kay [Coles James] who could serve as a whisperer in the President's ear like a Condoleezza Rice; like a Valerie Jarrett, was never given that opportunity. There was a lot of back and forth pertaining to that. And Kay said, "Well, it is not going to serve the President well for me to try to cut through this thicket. And as a result of that, she did not push it any further."

Christopher Metzler Metzler concluded, "All of these things were blocked by Omarosa. At the end of the day, Omarosa is first and foremost a Democrat. She is not a conservative. She is not a Republican. She never has been. She is simply an opportunist. And that's where we ended up." Black Republicans Do Not Necessarily Mean Black Representation; nor Justice Dr. Ron Daniels, president of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) and a long-time associate of Omarosa's Youngstown, Ohio family, has had a unique view of Omarosa in the White House. He worked directly with her when she was a Democrat. He even named her a celebrity ambassador for IBW's Haiti Support Project after she traveled with a group of journalists to document the level of disaster following the 2010 earthquake. His view in the midst of her departure from the White House is two-fold. First, as it pertains to those Black Republicans who felt that they earned a position due to their loyalty to Black Republicans, "diversity does not equal representation of the Black community," he said. "That's one of the fallacies...Trump's agenda is a negative agenda. Fact number one is the way he dogged President Obama, the way he talked badly about Mexicans, etc. Why would anybody want to associate with that administration in the first place?" Omarosa (fifth from left) among this media delegation in Haiti, was a celebrity ambassador for IBW's Haiti Support Project in 2010. IBW President Ron Daniels, in cap behind her, says she has since rejected his advice to her about President Trump. Citing pioneering Black Republicans such as Nixon's Art Fletcher, known as "the father of affirmative action," Daniels says modern day Black Republicans can hardly hold a candle to some of the Black Republicans who - instead of following the party line - stood for justice when it was needed most. "The brand of Republicanism that we have now is extremely out of step with the vast majority of Black people and the mainstream of Black aspirations and Black policy and the concepts of Black policy prescriptions." Because of his working with Omarosa and his affinity for projects that she led for Haiti and for children in the U. S., Daniels now sees what he believes to have been her true agenda based on her most recent situation. "I think Omarosa, for whatever reason, is somebody who had been on the liberal side. She had supported Hillary Clinton...She had been in Democratic politics and all that. I think Omarosa saw an opportunity to advance her own interests and that is why she was blocking everybody else in terms of the Republicans who wanted to get close. She wanted to be the Queen bee," Daniels said. "She wanted to be able to fire folks, metaphorically speaking, or block people. That's not a good thing. But the idea that if she had opened the flood gates of somehow having more Ben Carsons or more Clarence Thomases or people like that, [that would not have been a good thing either]. But I don't think Omarosa was there advocating. It was really stunning to see her make that transformation." Black Republicans are not the only ones who say they were rejected by Omarosa American Urban Radio Network reporter April Ryan, a White House correspondent who has covered four presidents, confirmed that now former Trump press secretary, Sean Spicer, told her that Omarosa had asked him to "stop calling on me" during press briefings. Had he adhered to that request, it could have blocked important in-
formation and coverage on behalf of millions of African-American listeners to AURN radio stations across the nation. Ryan says Omarosa also tried to get her fired by calling her boss at AURN. Many of Omarosa's previous friends and associates, who rejected Trumpism, say they were also rejected. Daniels says he was one of them. "Omarosa is my home girl. My roots are in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and most of my adult life was spent in Youngstown, Ohio," her hometown, he recalls. "I had my own television show in Youngstown, Ohio for 18 years. She said she grew up watching me and was inspired by that. I saw the good work she was doing with children in Compton and that she had a progressive vision. So we forged a friendship," he said. "All of that was positive. Then, all of a sudden Trump came along and I saw her in and around Trump and I became very nervous. She's my homegirl. I cared about her. So at one point, I just sort of, as an elder, a friend, I just sort of called her to say, 'Be careful. You seem to be getting very close to Donald Trump and I don't think...' And she just sort of went off on me, kind of like, 'You don't need to be telling me, nobody needs to be telling me what's going on. I know what I'm doing. And somebody needs to be able to talk to him. And that was it. I just said bye because I did not want to see her become what she has now become in the Black community - a pariah in the Black community." There are many such stories told by former friends. But the truth about Omarosa's tenure and final days at the White House is yet to be made clear. NNPA Interviewed Omarosa last fall, but is still awaiting Trump interview that she promised. Ben Chavis, president/CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, said he interviewed Omarosa last fall in her White House office, located in the Old Executive Office Building. At that time, shortly after the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Weekend, there was no indication that she would be leaving, Chavis said. However, he speculated that, based on the content of the interview - which he said has not been published - she may have been pressing for diversity too much. "I think that's probably one of the things that probably got her in trouble in the White House is that she probably was pressing for more diversity," Chavis said. NNPA "first" interview with Trump. In an off-the-record meeting with several hundred Black leaders, including Chavis, during the Trump transition last January, Omarosa said NNPA would get the first interview with President Trump, a promise she later denied despite multiple sources that confirmed the conversation. In the recent interview, she indicated that the Trump/ NNPA interview was still possible, Chavis said. He said NNPA will continue to request the interview with Trump. What happened in the final days of Omarosa's tenure and the detailed reasons for her departure from the Trump administration are far from clear. "There are two sides of the story Omarosa's story and those being told by other sources are two completely different stories," said Ayshia Connors. "But based on her patterns of erratic behavior and disruptive behavior, it wouldn't surprise me at all if she was confrontational with General Kelly and things were played out the way they were reported to have played out outside of her story."

San Bernardino groups give toys to hundreds of children, work to build community bridges By BEATRIZ E. VALENZUELA | bvalenzuela@scng.com | San Bernardino Sun PUBLISHED: December 23, 2017 at 6:22 pm | UPDATED: December 23, 2017 at 6:25 pm Growing up, Robin McKinnon knew what it was like to not have something to unwrap for the holidays and didn’t put up too much of a fuss when everyone had to pitch in to make ends meet. But what she did have, even as a small child, was a sense of self and community. As she grew into adulthood and graduated from high school, then attended college and ultimately went into education, she never lost that sense of solidarity. “I didn’t have a lot growing up,” said the San Bernardino resident Saturday, yelling slightly in order to be heard over the lively music and excited chatter surrounding her. “I’m not rich or anything, but we have a few things and now we feel obligated to give back. It’s like our assignment.” So for the last seven years, McKinnon and the members of the car club she founded, Knock It Off Ladies Car Club, have raised money, collected toys and even reached into their own pockets to have enough gifts to give away to the children who now live in the same San Bernardino neighborhoods where she lived and continues to call home. School graduate and sophomore at the University of New Mexico. Lilly sat behind a long table joined by other young men who only a few years ago he may have battled on the football field, but on Saturday, they were all on the same team. The young players were signing autographs for children and giving them pep talks about college and staying on the
straight and narrow. “I’m always looking to give back to the community,” Lilly said. “I tell them to keep their schooling up and do well in the classroom and stay around the right crowd because you can easily get misled.” Lilly and some of the other players were asked to be part of the
toy giveaway by Omar Perkins, Sr. 42, of Rialto, part owner, along with Rodney Robinson, of the barbershop. But the Christmastime giveaway isn’t the only way McKinnon and her communityminded friends give back. The group also holds an annual Easter celebration, handing out
dozens of baskets to neighborhood children. The third Sunday of the month, KIO hosts a monthly kids’ club at the Buffalo Soldiers’ Motorcycle Club, 272 S Mountain View Avenue, where they teach children different skills, like cooking, but she’s quick to warn parents that the KIO Kids’ Club is not a daycare. “There is no sign-in and signout,” she said. “The parents have to stay with their kids and while the parents are here we can find out what else they need. Do they need help with food? Do they need help finding a job? We help link them up with the resources that are already out there.” For McKinnon, being able to help the children and families of San Bernardino is a passion and calling. “I like being a bridge between the community, the city and the schools,” she said. “As a substitute teacher with the school district of San Bernardino, I can see both sides of everything. The parents (have to parent) their kids and we have to make a better community for the parents. That’s why I try to do these events. I hope the parents will talk to each other and build that community for their children.”

It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The shooter — 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada — acted alone, police said. Investigators found 23 firearms in his room at the Mandalay Bay, and 19 more at his home. He was found after killing himself with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

About a month earlier, the Department of Justice charged more than 400 people who officials said were preying on addicts to shell out money for unnecessary treatments that only worsened their condition, and doctors who were allegedly prescribing unnecessary opioids. The White House Council of Economic Advisers recently reported that the epidemic’s true cost in 2015 was $504 billion — more than six times the most recent estimate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in late October that illegal, lab-made fentanyl contributed to the death of at least half of fatal opioid overdoses in 2016, underscoring how deadly the epidemic has become in recent years.

The total solar eclipse shifted across the U.S. in late August, enchanting Americans in small towns and large stadiums from coast to coast. The nation was captivated by the first total solar eclipse to cross the U.S. since 1918. Viewers gazed at the eclipse as it carved a narrow “path of totality” from Salem, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina. The one rule was to look only through special glasses or projected reflections, but some — including the president — disregarded that sound advice.

The gunman, Devin Kelley, fired the first shots outside of the church before unleashing more bullets inside the church. His victims’ ages ranged from 5 to 72 years old, police said. In late March, three people were killed and about 40 were injured when an attacker rammed into pedestrians on London’s Westminster Bridge and attempted to enter Parliament wielding a knife. About two weeks later, an attacker killed four and injured 15 after intentionally driving into a department store in Stockholm, Sweden. In May, children were among the 22 killed in a suicide bombing after an Ariana Grande concert at Britain’s Manchester Area. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in Britain since 2005. Almost two weeks later, seven people died and nearly 50 were injured when a vehicle rammed into pedestrians on London Bridge, and three attackers embarked on a stabbing spree at nearby Borough Market. During August, 13 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in Spain when a van plowed into Barcelona’s La Rambla tourist destination, before another car hit several people and killed one woman in a resort further down the Spanish coast. Jonathan Drake / Reuters A hurricane season unlike any other came to a close in December after causing billions of dollars in damages, devastating those who were impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria when they plowed through southeast Texas, Florida and the Caribbean. Harvey, a Category 3 storm, drenched southeast Texas in late August with 1 million gallons of water per person in the region, according to The Associated Press. The storm caused historic flooding in Houston, where some downtown areas were knee-deep in water and portions of highways were shut down with 10 feet of water. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Irma ravaged Florida, devastating the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm before weakening. The storm also lead to the deaths of 12 patients at a Hollywood, Florida, nursing home. Those fatalities have since been ruled a homicide, officials said. And at the end of September, the Category 4 Hurricane Maria, the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in almost a century, steamrolled through the island, annihilating homes, knocking out the entire power grid and leaving many without electricity for

On Aug. 12, white nationalists gathered in Emancipation Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, before a rally organized by a group known as "Unite the Right." The rally’s purpose was to protest the removal of a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Later that day, a 32-year-old woman was killed and more than 19 others were injured after a car rammed into a group of counterprotesters who were demonstrating against the alt-right. Trump denounced the series of events that unfolded in Charlottesville, but was criticized by the public and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for not fully condemning the protests’ white nationalist elements, which included appearances by former Ku Klux Klan Imperial Wizard David Duke and white nationalist leader Richard Spencer. In early October, Vice President Mike Pence attended a San Francisco 49ers game in Indianapolis only to walk out after some of the team's players knelt during "The Star-Spangled Banner."
