Let’s face it, for some of us, the holidays are more like a horror film than a Hallmark movie. Our families don’t always get along and every dinner doesn’t end on a happy note. Patients often come back to me after the holidays with terrible stories of holiday gatherings gone wrong that have led to some sort of worsening of depression or anxiety. Every time, I ask if this was the first time this has happened and the answer is always “no”. Each person is able to admit that they could have predicted this level of holiday drama but they are always hopeful that this time will be different. While we want to believe that people can change, we have to remember that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior and plan our holidays with that in mind.
Don’t be so hard on yourself – The behavior of those who disrupt our gatherings has everything to do with them and very little, if anything, to do with us. It is notuncommon for those present to think they could have done something different to prevent this from happening and take the events very personal. They may find themselves planning annually to try to prevent the drama, only to find themselves disappointed due to the behavior of others. You are not responsible for the behavior of others. You can put forth the best holiday spread imaginable and provide the warmest environment, but that may not be enough to stop people from acting out. 1. Give Yourself Permission to
“Check Out” if Necessary There is no written rule that you need to be at every family function from start until finish. As a matter of fact, to preserve your mental health you may have to find ways to step away. Going late, leaving early, or finding moments to take breaks for relaxation and deep breathing can be lifesavers for moments like these. 2. Set Firm Boundaries If you have a repeat offender relative who tends to be the primary disrupter on the holidays, set boundaries with that person before the event. It helps if youhave the support of other relatives. Being firm with that individual about what behavior is problematic, how it affects
everyone else, and what you all plan to do if the person doesn’t respect the boundaries being set can help with creating a more peaceful day. The best boundaries are clear and concise with no room for misunderstanding. Boundaries that are too loose don’t typically stop the behavior. Boundaries that are too firm and rigid, tend to be unrealistic and set the person up for failure. As difficult as it sounds, practice makes perfect! Taking the time to prepare for the drama we know is likely coming is the best way to deal with family drama. We can’t pick our family and we can’t prevent all the drama. With some planning on our part and setting realistic expectations we can decrease our level of surprise and disappointment when it comes our way.

Dr. James Forbes, Jr., one of the top preachers in the nation. They’ve held jazz events, as well as the distinguished gospel quartet, Mighty Clouds of Joy. Several years ago, they hosted the Emmy award-winning playwright Jeff Stetson of the plays, Blood on the Leaves and The Meeting, a fictional play about a meeting between Dr. King and Malcolm X. James said that Barber’s message ties in tightly with the
life and goals of Dr. King, and addresses the ramifications of systemic poverty not only in California, but nationwide. Rev. Barber is the president of the NAACP North Carolina state chapter, and originator of the Forward Together Moral Mondays Movement. “He’s become part of the leg moving with people to march on Washington. He’s coming here to speak about poverty, the homeless and veterans,” James said. Last year, James held a conference on homelessness to help bring the local problem to the forefront. Various agencies spoke about what they are doing in the Inland Empire, especially in the Fontana area, to tackle homelessness. “A lot of people like to stick their heads in the sand when it comes to poor people and the homeless, with children outdoors and hungry,” he said. But for churches, he believes the situation has been a burden because the demand has increased dramatically over the years. “We seem to be the ears and voices for people that can’t speak for themselves, and do things ( continued on page 8)
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The California attorney general's office urged a state appeals court Thursday to refrain from ordering it to review and publicly release a massive trove of records documenting investigations into police shootings, use-of-force incidents and officer misconduct. Lawyers for Attorney General Xavier Becerra said a transparency law that took effect this year never intended for his office to commit the extraordinary resources needed to vet so many records. They sought to reverse a lower court's order to turn over the records to news organizations that sued his office. Deputy Attorney General Jennifer E. Rosenberg told a three-judge panel that state lawmakers may not have considered imposing “this enormous burden” on Becerra's office when drafting the bill. “It might have been an oversight,” she said. The First Amendment Coalition and KQED brought the lawsuit against Becerra and The Associated Press and many other news organizations have joined it. Their attorney, Michael T. Risher, said the Legislature specifically considered the cost of the attorney general's compliance when they passed the law, and argued the public's right to know about police misconduct outweighs the cost of disclosing such information. “It was a watershed law; it eliminates decades of police secrecy. Of course it's going to create a burden," Risher said. The law took effect Jan. 1 but many local agencies rebuffed media attempts to obtain existing records, arguing the law only was intended to require the disclosure of new records. After lower courts ruled for disclosure, police unions representing San Francisco and Los Angeles police departments and the Los Angeles
County Sheriff's sworn personnel withdrew their lawsuits seeking to block the release. But the attorney's general's office, which is a repository for years of local police investigations, has continued fighting. At a news conference earlier in the week, Becerra said his office has released pre-2019 documents on agents from its Division of Law Enforcement. He doesn't oppose the release of older documents involving local agencies but said those agencies should be the ones to disclose them. “For us it would be an onerous obligation to have to redo what the (local) agency is already obligated to do,” he said. “It would grind to a halt so many of the other things we have to do if all of a sudden we have to redirect our resources away from law enforcement and public safety to do data assessment and release of information that other agencies already are doing." Risher submitted to the appeals court evidence that some agencies may have or did destroy records of internal affairs before the law took effect. He said it was possible those records may still reside at the attorney general's office because California law requires state agencies to hold onto records longer than local governments. The California Reporting Project, a coalition of 40 media outlets, was formed to mine documents made available by the new law. Its members have filed hundreds of public records records seeking police records. The appeals court in San Francisco has up to 90 days to decide on Becerra's appeal. ___ This story has been corrected to reflect that the arguments happened Thursday, not Friday.

An innovative teacher-toteacher training program developed by the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) earned a coveted Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association (CSBA). Superintendent Dr. Dale Marsden and members of the Board of Education received the award on December 5 during the Association’s annual meeting in San Diego. The District’s Demonstration Teacher Program was one of just five in San Bernardino County to be lauded with a Golden Bell. The award, one of the state’s leading education honors, recognizes outstanding public school programs for innovation, sustainability, and best practices that result in positive student outcomes. When the state adopted new academic standards, the District’s Board recognized the need to create innovative ways for teachers and administrators to see how the standards might be implemented in our specific context. Under the direction of the Board of Education, the District established a committee to create a program that would enable the District to become a leader in the implementation of the new
standards. The Demonstration Teacher Program, which launched in 2013, is an exemplary program that provides opportunities for teacher leadership, a pathway for aspiring teachers through mentorship of students and student teachers, a systematic support system for new and struggling teachers, and inspiration for all teachers to innovate and excel. Demonstration teachers provide an innovative blend of traditional professional development and professional learning by opening their classroom doors to all educators from the first day of school to the last, in order for teachers to observe and learn. The Board’s financial commitment to this program has enabled thousands of educators, within and outside the District, to benefit. As the program has grown, the Board has funded a full-time National Board Certified teacher and former demonstration teacher to lead the program in her new role as a program specialist. The Board is committed to the sustainability of this program, and recognizes that it is a proven model program for other districts.
There’s no unified source of data detailing the exact rate or nature of accidents and crimes that occur during rideshares, but nearly all of us have heard (or lived) news stories, personal anecdotes, and statistics that attest to danger, criminal activity or accidents that arise from the use of these apps. While one could argue that the rate of these incidents seems relatively low given the volume of rideshare use, it’s also true that these tragedies are somewhat preventable and their occurrence can and should be minimized through intentional thought, action and policy. Even an extremely low percentage of dangerous rides could mean hundreds or thousands of daily incidents. The Biggest Ridesharing Risks Fake drivers. Criminals pose as Uber drivers to take advantage of passengers. Within the last few months, University of South Carolina student Samantha Josephson got into a car she mistook for her Uber and was killed by its driver just hours later. In Las Vegas, NV, a woman jumped out of a moving car to escape a fake and threatening driver. In Tuscaloosa, AL, a fake driver took photos of unconscious female passengers. In Chicago, IL, yet another fake driver swindled
saying something went wrong with payments and requesting credit cards during the ride. Car and pedestrian accidents. “Riders often forget that their drivers might have an accident, so don’t think about normal vehicle safety, when they’re a passenger in an Uber or Lyft,” explains Orlando-based personal injury attorney Tina Willis. “We have received many calls to our office after very serious ridesharing accidents.” Criminals. Drivers – even ones that pass Uber and Lyft’s background checks – sometimes have criminal intent. A 2018 investigation by CNN found that at least 103 Uber drivers in the preceding four years have been accused of sexually assaulting or abusing their passengers, with at least 31 convicted. The Best Uber & Lyft Safety Tips 1. Wait for your ride in a safe place. Since apps will tell you exactly where your driver is, you only need to go out and meet them at the last possible minute. Request your ride while you’re still inside and remain in an area that is well lit, comfortable and in the presence of other people for as long as possible. 2. Always ask “What’s my name?” University of South Carolina and the family of Samantha Josephson are spearheading the #WhatsMyName campaign to promote rideshare safety by always positively identifying your driver. Never get into an Uber, Lyft or any other private car unless the driver can first identify you by name. If they’re your actual driver, they will also know your destination.

You must also match the make, model and license plate of the car to what’s listed in the app. Make sure their personal appearance matches their profile photo. 4. Don’t ride alone. If you can share a ride with a friend, do it. There is strength in numbers and you can split the cost to boot. 5. Use trip-sharing features. Both Lyft and Uber have in-app trip sharing features that allow you to share live updates on your trip with trusted friends. Simply hit “Share trip status” in Uber or “Share route” in Lyft. (Sadly, Josephson’s boyfriend was tracking her phone during the fatal ride. Like other safety measures, this effort should be reinforced with additional precautions.) 6. Consider more personal safety technology. Other apps and devices can add more layers of protection. For example, the iWitness app ($3 per month, free trial available) turns your phone into a mini security system, with a security camera, alarm and emergency 911 calling just a tap or shake away. Tego is a free app that also tracks walks and rides with optional video recording, while The Nimb Ring is a smart ring that conceals a panic button. 7. Let the driver know that the trip is being tracked. People are more likely to commit crimes when they think they’re not going to get caught, so give some indication that people are looking out for you. Make a phone call and tell someone that you’re on an Uber. If they don’t answer (or you don’t want to call at an odd hour) one trick is to
instead. A script like this might help: “Hey mom, just calling to let you know that I’m in my Uber now. I’ll be there in about 15 minutes and you can also follow along on the app. See you soon!” 8. Choose where to sit wisely. Uber advises that it’s safer to sit in the back of the car because it creates two possible exits and increases space between the driver and the passenger. Additionally, sitting on the passenger side instead of directly behind the driver can help you keep an eye on both the driver and the road. However, all vehicles and situations are different. In a large car or shared ride, try to choose a seat with easy access to the door, a good vantage point of the driver and the road ahead, and courteous distance between other passengers. If you feel safer in the front seat, a good driver shouldn’t mind if you sit there. Consider it a red flag if a driver tries to force you into a certain seat. 9. Make sure your driver follows the rules of the road. “Simply telling the driver that you actually care about safety can make a big difference in how safely he or she drives with you as a passenger,” Attorney Willis points out. She recommends reminding the driver to proceed safely and lawfully before the ride starts. Distracted driving can also be a huge problem – your driver should not make calls or fiddle with their phone, even if it’s handsfree. “There have been many catastrophic injury and death cases caused by distractions while using Bluetooth phone connections,” she says. Panera Bread Opens at Riverside University Health System - Medical Center Community News
Lawmakers in Washington are pushing the U.S. Department of Justice to tackle the beast in the basement: hard-core online pornography. Last week, four Republican U.S. representatives sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General William Barr urging him to enforce dusty federal obscenity laws against the creators and distributors of graphic, violent, and deviant online pornography, an exploding and illegal industry. Although the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects some pornographic content under the guarantee of free speech, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld exceptions, including content legally considered obscenity (Miller v. California) and child pornography (New York v. Ferber), which are prosecutable. But most of the obscene, or hard-core, pornography produced and distributed online today—which some experts argue represents the majority of online pornography—goes unprosecuted. Under President Barack Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder disbanded the Obscenity Prosecution Task
Force in the criminal division of the Justice Department. For much of the last decade, the federal government has made little to no effort to fight hard-core pornography online. In 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump signed a pledge, produced by internet safety group Enough Is Enough, promising to aggressively enforce existing federal laws, including obscenity laws, to prevent the sexual exploitation of children online. He also promised to appoint “an attorney general who will make the prosecution of such laws a top priority.” The four representatives seek to hold the White House accountable for the president’s promises. “This pledge has so far been ignored in the Trump administration with the result that the harms of illegal pornography have continued unabated, affecting children and adults so acutely to the point that 15 state legislatures have declared that pornography is causing a public health crisis,” wrote Republican Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana, Mark Meadows of North Carolina,
Vicky Hartzler of Missouri, and Brian Babin of Texas. “It is imperative that you follow through on this important campaign promise made by Mr. Trump.” Barr successfully prosecuted obscenity crimes in the early 1990s while serving as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush, according to Donna Rice Hughes, the president and CEO of Enough Is Enough. “I believe he is the AG to do this job,” she said. If he takes the challenge, Barr faces an uphill battle. Online pornographers today operate unobstructed. “It’s anything goes, and they know it,” Hughes said. This week, online pornography giant PornHub released its yearin-review data, boasting it had more than 42 billion visits in 2019, an average of 115 million per day. It also claimed a record number of searches and video uploads, totaling 1.36 million hours of new content in 2019. Critics of obscenity laws argue the government should not police what adults decide to consume and parents should be
responsible for keeping their children away from pornography. But Hughes disagrees, contending that parents today are playing whack-a-mole trying to keep their kids safe from the onslaught of explicit online content. She also said the multibillion-dollar obscene pornography industry directly fuels sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and child pornography. Violent and deviant porn creates a vicious cycle of demand because it is highly addictive, so more content creates a demand for even more content. If the Justice Department makes it a priority to go after some of the big players in obscene online pornography, Hughes said, it would send a loud message to pornographers that creating and distributing such content will affect their bottom line: “I believe we will see a change.” If not, Hughes said, it will only get harder: “If previous administrations had taken this seriously, we wouldn’t be in this mess, and if this administration doesn’t start, it’s going to be an even bigger mess.”

Black Activists Rebuke Comparison of Impeachment to Civil Rights Movement Partisan "Clarification" Called Disrespectful and Hypocritical Government News
Washington, D.C. - Pushing back on lawmakers who compare impeachment proceedings to the Civil Rights Movement and the fight against Jim Crow discrimination, members of the Project 21 black leadership network are calling liberals' rhetorical tactics - particularly ones by U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries - both incorrect and hypocritical. "This has to be - without question - one of the most incorrect comparisons I have ever heard," said Project 21 member Martin Baker. "How dare Representative Jeffries weaponize the collective struggles of suffragettes and the Civil Rights Movement by comparing them to an impeachment that is partisan political vengeance. To say it is disrespectful would be an understatement. To compare those two situations is, at the least, inherently wrong and does nothing to address the current situation. Using the Civil Rights Movement as the basis for a soundbite to whip the troops into frenzy will backfire." During the debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives preceding Wednesday's impeachment vote against President Donald Trump, Representative Hakeem Jeffries claimed that impeachment would not further divide the American people because "there is a difference between division and clarification." He asserted: "Suffrage once divided the nation, but women rose up to clarify that all voices must be heard in our democracy. Jim Crow once divided the nation, but civil rights champions rose up to clarify that all are entitled to equal protection under the law." Calling concerns about division "cynical," Representative Jeffries added, "we will clarify that no one is above the law." Project 21 member Christopher Arps sternly rebuked these comments, pointing out that the manner in which the impeachment proceedings were conducted called into question the legal motives and underpinnings of the
process. He said: "In these historic impeachment proceedings, we've seen Jim Crow era tactics like anonymous witnesses and the gathering of suspect evidence used against President Trump. That's why I find it so ironic to hear African American Congressman Hakeem Jeffries mention slavery and Jim Crow in his impeachment remarks. Jeffries's quote clearly demonstrates there is not a shortage of hypocrisy or extreme partisanship at play in our nation's capital." The votes to impeach President Trump were exclusively partisan - 230-197 and 229-198. Earlier in the proceedings, U.S. Representative Al Green suggested impeachment was necessary "to deal with slavery." U.S. Representative John Lewis, who was a member of the Civil Rights Movement, called the impeachment votes "a mission and a mandate to be on the right side of history." "After last night's partisan vote, impeachment is now just a political tool. This is not what the Founders intended," said Project 21 Co-Chairman Stacy Washington. "What have the liberals accomplished? Yes, they have impeached the President of the United States. But without control of the Senate - and lacking any evidence of an actual high crime or misdemeanor - not only does President Trump remain in office, but polls show Americans are actually rallying to his side. Bureau Of Cannabis Control Launches QR Code Campaign Encouraging Consumers To Scan And Verify Licensed Cannabis Retailers Aguilar State/Government News SACRAMENTO – The Bureau of Cannabis Control (Bureau) launched a campaign today encouraging consumers to look for and scan a quick response code (QR code) with their smartphone camera when they visit a licensed cannabis retailer. Consumers who scan to verify a QR code will be able to confirm that a cannabis retailer is licensed. As part of this effort, the Bureau is encouraging retailers to print out and post their unique QR code in storefront windows and educate consumers about the importance of supporting and purchasing from the legal cannabis market. The importance of a QR code identification system for licensees is underscored by the fact that many consumers have difficulty telling the difference between licensed and unlicensed retail storefronts. This was on display last week when the Bureau and other state agencies worked in coordination with the City of Los Angeles to serve 45 search warrants against illegal operators over the course of three days. “We believe licensed retailers will benefit from a recognizable emblem distinguishing them as a licensed business in the community,” said Bureau Chief Lori Ajax. “We also want to provide consumers with the best information possible so they can determine which licensed
California cannabis retailers carry products that are tracked, tested, and legal.” Smartphone users can easily use their smartphone camera to scan the displayed QR code, which automatically links to the Bureau’s Online License Search and confirms the cannabis retailer’s license status. New State Tax Credits and Regulation Changes State/Government News The California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTCAC) administers federal and state lowincome housing tax credit programs. Traditionally CTCAC has administered approximately $100 million per year in state tax credits. With the passage this year of AB 101, CTCAC is providing an additional $500 million in state tax credits specifically to target new construction of affordable units beginning in 2020. In October 2019, new regulation
changes that streamline the application process for these new state tax credits were approved by CTCAC, which is chaired by the Treasurer. The regulation changes will promote production, spur new innovations, and improve cost containment efforts involving affordable housing. Secures Federal Funding for Inland Empire Priorities in 2020 Government News
Rep. Pete Aguilar Washington, DC—Yesterday, President Trump signed into law H.R. 1865 and H.R. 1158, two legislative packages to provide government funding for fiscal year (FY) 2020. The funding bills included two key provisions offered by Rep. Pete Aguilar. The first was added by Rep. Aguilar to the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill and encourages the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to reevaluate the formula that determines Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan limits in regions like San Bernardino County with Metropolitan Statistical Areas of 1,300 square miles or more. The changes would result in higher FHA loan limits and would increase access to affordable loans and increase home ownership rates in communities like the Inland Empire. The second provision added by Aguilar secures an additional $3 million for the Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Scholarship Program, bringing annual funding for next year to $10 million. The program grants
full tuition to eligible students pursuing degrees in the cyber security field, including students at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). “From helping more Inland Empire families become homeowners, to giving students in our community the training they need to secure good-paying jobs, my job in Congress is to support Inland Empire residents and make sure our community has the resources it needs. I fought for these provisions because they’ll have tangible impacts on the lives of San Bernardino County residents, and I’m proud they were signed into law by the president,” said Rep. Aguilar. In addition to the legislation added by Rep. Your odds are greatest if you have an identical twin with the disorder, a 50% chance. Some people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia have no family history of it. In cases like this, scientists believe that a gene may have changed and triggered the condition. Causes Many genes can play a role in the odds of getting schizophrenia. A single change can do it, but it typically takes several smaller changes to build up, leading to a higher risk. There’s still some uncertainty around how genetic changes lead to schizophrenia.

At least 30 people have been sickened from a drug-resistant bacteria they most likely picked up after coming in contact with puppies, federal health officials say. The outbreak of a strain of Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria commonly associated with food poisoning, has spread to 13 states and caused four hospitalizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Most of those infected came in contact with puppies, and many were at pet stores. At least 12 people who were infected came in contact with puppies at Petland, a national pet store
chain, the CDC says, including some Petland employees. "Petland takes the health and welfare of our employees, our customers and our pets very seriously," the company said in a statement, adding that no one location has been identified as the originating source. The bacteria causing the string of illnesses is similar to the bacteria that sickened people in an outbreak from 2016 to 2018 also tied to pet store puppies, the CDC says. Season Of Sinus Infections: What You Need To Know Health News
Along with the flu, this is the time of year for sinus infections with their make-you-miserable stuffy, runny noses and blocked ears. Most sinus infections are caused by viruses, but bacteria can also be to blame, according to Dr. Jessica Grayson, an assistant professor of otolaryngology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “When people say they have sinus pressure, they may mean nasal congestion,” Grayson said in a university news release. “Bilateral congestion could mean a person has a viral infection or an allergic reaction. Viral infections don’t pick and choose a side.” If your sinus pressure is isolated, you might have a bacterial infection, and that meansyou need to see a doctor and probably need an antibiotic,” she said. “Taking too many, though, can have negative effects on the immune system.” “With a virus,” Grayson added, “you just have to let it run its course.” But a nasal decongestant like Afrin can help, she said. Grayson recommends using it at night and for no more than three or four days in a row. Use it longer and you run the risk
of getting rebound congestion. “This starts a vicious cycle of becoming addicted to using the product,” she said. Using saline irrigation or a neti pot can also help by washing out the nasal passages, Grayson said. For the first few days of infection, though, it’s ineffective because the nose is too swollen. Nasal steroids such as Flonase can help reduce inflammation, she said. It’s also flu season. “Get vaccinated,” Grayson recommended. “Even if you do get theflu, it can still help with the severity of the symptoms.” And, she pointed out, there is some evidence that eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collards, kale, and cauliflower may help prevent viral infections. “Having a smoothie with kale or a side of broccoli can go a long way,” Grayson said. If you lose your sense of smell after a cold or bacterial infection, see your doctor, she advised. Treatment can include zinc and lipoic acid supplements, and possibly smell retraining. Dr. Kevin Williams is the Chief Medical Officer for Rare Disease at Pfizer where he leads a Medical Affairs organization of approximately 150 medical colleagues around the globe. He pursued medicine after being inspired by his father’s work as a general practitioner in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Kevin is passionate about raising awareness and increasing understanding of rare diseases, such as sickle cell disease, in the African American community. As you may have heard, my team at Pfizer recently experienced a significant disappointment. Our phase 3 trial for rivipansel, a potential treatment for the debilitating vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) endured by virtually every person with sickle cell disease (SCD), did not meet its study endpoints. Both professionally and personally, this news was hard to hear, especially knowing that people with SCD have such limited treatment options available to them. However, even though the study didn’t turn out as we had hoped, the good news is that the rivipansel program greatly advanced our understanding of SCD and VOCs, which will be important for future SCD research programs and drug development. As I’ve written about before, SCD is the most common
inherited blood disorder, and it disproportionately affects people of African descent[i]. VOCs, one of the most common complications of SCD, are marked by extreme pain resulting from sickle-shaped red blood cells clumping together in the bloodstream[ii]. The standard of care for patients experiencing these pain crises has remained largely unchanged since the first report of SCD in 1910, and is restricted mostly to treating disease symptoms, like the use of opioids for pain management. Just last month, Novartis was granted FDA approval for a treatment to reduce the frequency of VOCs experienced by patients; however, there still stands a greater need for therapies that target the root cause of these painful episodes. The clinical trial for rivipansel may have come to an end; however, the one thing that working in SCD and collaborating with the NNPA and SCD-focused patient groups over the last several years has taught me is that this community is strong. Their strength inspires me and my team every day and fuels our passion for our work in advancing the scientific research of rare diseases like SCD. In this article, I’d like to share a little more about the importance of innovation in rare diseases and answer some common questions about the role clinical trials play as the foundation for moving medical innovation forward. Airlines, Stop Discriminating Against Science By Matthew R. Bailey On your right, you see a miniature horse. Straight ahead, a pig. To your left, a monkey. No, you're not at the zoo. You're at the airport, where airlines allow all sorts of untrained "emotional support" animals to fly alongside owners. Yet these same airlines often refuse to transport animals used in lifesaving medical research. Several prominent carriers -including United Airlines, British Airways, and Qatar Airways -have yielded to pressure from fringe activist groups and stopped carrying animals for biomedical research. Other airlines have placed severe limits on the transport of research animals. These bans and restrictions aren't just arbitrary -- they're illegal. And they threaten public health. Airlines have no practical justification for banning research animals. Unlike support animals - which have a long history of disrupting flights and even attacking passengers -- research animals don't fly in cabins. They travel in cargo compartments, where they can't bother passengers. Most airlines also fly animals to zoos, so they don't seem to have a moral objection to flying captive animals. Instead, these carriers have drawn an arbitrary line at
biomedical research because they have given in to pressure from PETA. British Airways, for instance, refuses to fly "live animals that are used for laboratory or for medical experimentation," but will transport "live animals requiring carriage for other purposes, including conservation and/or breeding." Such bans run afoul of federal law, which clearly states that "an air carrier or foreign air carrier may not subject a person, place, port, or type of traffic in foreign air transportation to unreasonable discrimination." Live research animals qualify as a type of traffic, and yet, unlike pets and companion animals, they are practically banned from air travel. By capitulating to extremists, airlines are impeding medical progress. Without animal research, scientists wouldn't be able to discover and test new therapies and medical devices. Treatments for everything from HIV/AIDS to heart disease are the product of animal research. It's difficult to name a single medical advancement that didn't rely on some form of animal research as part of its development. Future breakthroughs in the fights against cancer and Alzheimer's depend on continued animal research, and the ability to (continued in next 2 columns)
Cutting-edge research and clinical trials are key to making an impact for patients and are essential to the development of new treatments. These studies also deepen our understanding of diseases, especially rare diseases, such as SCD, where few advances have been made. For rare diseases in particular, only 5% of diseases have an FDAapproved treatment[iii], so there is a lot of work to be done in this area. At their core, clinical trials are designed to produce high-quality data that will translate into a better understanding of the treatments that work best for certain diseases and people. Given their crucial role in medical science, clinical trials are highly regulated and conducted using high-quality scientific and ethical standards to ensure the safety of participating patients. Are there potential challenges associated with clinical trials? The biggest challenge is that a clinical trial may fail, even after decades of research aimed at uncovering a treatment breakthrough. While no one likes to hear a clinical trial didn’t meet its goals, especially people in need of new treatment options, researchers are unfortunately unable to anticipate the end results of these studies in advance. However, even though we can’t be sure of the results, it’s still critical for this research to happen to bring new treatment advances to those in need. Did you know that for every approved medicine,
there are countless others that don’t pass through the grueling clinical trial and regulatory processes? A recent report found that the likelihood of drugs moving from clinical phase to approval is only 9.6%[iv]. Moreover, even if an investigational therapy is backed by promising data, it can take around 12 years or longer for it to gain approval. Another challenge can be enrollment of volunteers to participate in clinical trials. Historically, recruitment obstacles have been a barrier in SCD research. However, a poll conducted, as a part of Pfizer and the NNPA’s collaboration, found that a majority of respondents had positive or neutral attitudes toward SCD clinical trials, and furthermore, they indicated a willingness to participate in them if provided the appropriate information. These results are encouraging and suggest people are becoming more inclined to participate in clinical trials for hard-to-treat diseases like SCD. What have you learned about clinical trials during your time at Pfizer? Pfizer strives to accelerate the development and delivery of groundbreaking medicines and the dedication, talent and resources that support our clinical trials can’t be captured in a few words. However, as I’ve said earlier, advancing research and conducting clinical trials comes with the unfortunate reality of not always being successful. The news that our trial for rivipansel didn’t achieve its goals was disappointing, especially for the SCD community who is eagerly awaiting new therapies for VOCs. That said, we are channeling this loss into renewed energy and making it our purpose to learn from it. We are in the process of reviewing the trial data closely to ensure our findings can help inform and shape future SCD programs. Regardless of the outcomes, I want to stress again that more trials in the rare disease space, particularly for SCD, are desperately needed. I am confident in saying our steadfast commitment to this community will continue, as we work tirelessly to look for new ways to continue advancing care. Wear your seatbelt, don’t distract the driver or ask them to do anything dangerous. If sharing the ride, be courteous to other passengers. 11. Do not share personal information. If you need to communicate with the Uber or Lyft driver, you can do so via the app without giving out your contact information, social media handles or last name. Remember that there is no legitimate reason to give your driver a direct payment. If you’re on the way home, consider being dropped off at a safe nearby location that doesn’t give away your address. 12. Trust your gut. If anything seems “off” about your driver, car, route or anything else, speak up. Prioritize your own wellbeing over your passenger rating. Don’t get in the car if your instincts are tingling. End the ride if you’re not comfortable, as long as you’re in a safe place to exit and find another ride. 13. Be aware of traffic when entering and exiting the vehicle. As a passenger, you might not be cognizant of nearby traffic. Wait until the car is somewhere out of harm’s way before you attempt to get in. When you get out, exit away from traffic, and make sure not to open the door into cyclists, pedestrians or other vehicles. 14. Give feedback about your trip and driver. If you were sketched out by anything that happened during your ride, don’t hesitate to report it. You might have avoided harm or trauma, but the next person might not be so unfortunate. Do

your part to help cull problematic drivers from the pool. Are Uber and Lyft Doing Their Share? What Else Can Be Done? Uber and Lyft both conduct reviews of drivers’ motor vehicle records and criminal records, but it’s important to understand that people with no previous record may still participate in dangerous behavior. And of course, background checks can’t prevent people from posing as legitimate drivers. After Samantha Josephson’s death, Uber and Lyft expanded some communication measures to enhance rider safety and ensure they get into the correct vehicles (the apps more prominently remind riders to verify the driver, car and license plate, for example). Both apps now have an in-app panic button to call 911. These efforts were applauded by the National Safety Council, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate preventable deaths. On May 16, South Carolina’s governor signed the Samantha Josephson Act into law, requiring all rideshare drivers to have a sign with the name of the service and license plate number prominently displayed on the front of the vehicle while on duty. (A previous provision requiring illuminated signs was scrapped before the bill became law.) It also codifies the act of impersonating a driver as a misdemeanor crime. Similar legislation has been proposed in North Carolina and New Jersey, and other states are expected to follow suit. Contact your local lawmakers to voice support for these issues. Many riders have asked whether they can request specific drivers or to only ride in cars with female drivers. Neither major app grants this permission or has announced plans to do so.

Oakland, CA — Kenya Wheeler, an African American man from California, says he was racially profiled by three security guards who confronted him — one even drew a weapon at him — because he was taking photos while walking home. Kenya believes he was treated that way because of his race. Kenya posted what happened on Facebook, along with a video he took of the incident. In the video, the security guards can be heard asking “Why do you [take] pictures the car?” “I took pictures of the bike racks,” Wheeler answered. The security guards did not believe Wheeler and accused him of “casing vehicles” instead. Wheeler was then forced to wait for the police while detained. He said he was shocked when he saw one of the guards threatened him with a firearm even though he was unarmed and he only had his smartphone and umbrella with him. Given that the guard had pulled a weapon, Wheeler said he “did not feel safe in exercising my rights to leave and stayed even though I felt it was a false detention as these were not peace officers and I had committed no crime.” Wheeler, who is the head of Oakland Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission, said he was walking home from yoga class when he
noticed the bike racks that were adorned with colorful yarn. He stopped to take some photos of it to share with his colleagues at the commission, but then he was suddenly stopped by the security guards. After being held for 20 minutes, he was free to go home after the police came and resolved the incident “professionally.” Still, he was disappointed with the incident which he believed happened because of his race. “This is racial profiling, and this is a racial act,” he told local station ABC 7. “The only reason that I’m being treated this way is because I’m Black.” Meanwhile, Peter Jakel, a spokesperson from the PR firm that represents the building where the security guards worked, said they were also upset about the incident and they have since changed their security providers. “We share the concerns Mr. Wheeler expressed as he was on a public sidewalk and should not have been confronted at all,” said Jakel. Moreover, Wheeler said the building manager apologized to him and said that there have been recent break-ins in the area which may be the reason the guards stepped up their security. He hopes his experience could serves as a lesson about the importance of inclusion and diversity. “What I do know is that all of us as a community need to come together to ensure what happened to me does not happens to others in Oakland or elsewhere in our region,” he said.

Nationwide — Cicely Tyson, one of the most iconic actresses of our time, has just turned 95years old. But despite her age, she says she will never ever retire from her decades-long career. Tyson was the cover star for Time Magazine’s latest “The Art of Optimism” special issue. During her interview, she revealed that she has no plans to retire from Hollywood. “The reason why I have been in this universe as long as I have been is because he’s not ready for me,” said Tyson. “When I’ve completed my job, he’ll take me away. I know several people who have retired and then six months later, they’re gone.” Since the 1960’s, Tyson has been gracing both the film and television screens and making an impact as a Black woman. She paved the way for more representation of Black women in
Hollywood. Throughout her career, she has won a number of prestigious awards including Emmys and a Tony and was nominated for Academy Awards for her role in the 1972 film Sounder. Among some of her works, she has appeared in two Tyler Perry movies, was part of the Roots miniseries, and had a small role in the Oscar-nominated movie The Help. Now, she plays a recurring character in How to Get Away With Murder as the mother of the main character Annalise Keating, portrayed by Viola Davis. And she is far from retiring. “We have to honor this blessed gift that we have. That’s what keeps you going. Keeps your mind fluid — your heart, your whole being. You can’t just stop, because that will be the end of you.”
Nationwide — There’s just no stopping Steve Harvey from providing entertaining content to his millions of fans. He recently signed a deal for a new daytime talk show called Steve on Watch that will run exclusively on Facebook. Starting January 6, 2020, Harvey will be hosting a new show that is slated to run several times a week for 10 weeks. According to reports, new episodes have already been taped from Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. The show will reportedly have a format similar to his previous TV talk show wherein he shares opinions on various issues and interviews celebrities, people in the news, musicians, and many more. “Reaching my audience anywhere and everywhere they are has always been the goal,”
Harvey said in a statement. “Facebook Watch viewers are the most energetic, engaged community, and so are my amazing fans. Getting all those people to directly engage on a platform like this is the perfect evolution of the show.” The show is expected to be a hit since Harvey is popular in social media, especially Facebook. In fact, Harvey’s Facebook page was named Top 6 most-viewed U.S. entertainment page. Within a 1 year period, it has reportedly received 2.2 billion views and 64 million engagements. Moreover, 35 of his videos have each been viewed over 10 million times. The move came a few months since his TV show Steve on NBC ended after its 7-year run and was replaced with Kelly Clarkson’s show.

We are not called to fit in but rather to stand out. [Romans 12:2] tells us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. So “Come out from amongst them and be ye separated…” [2 Corinthians 6:14; 7:1]. I tell you God is looking for people who would dare to be like Daniel. Daniel had faith and applied works to his faith. to learn a new language. You must dare to be different to fulfill your destiny, to maximize your potential, and to excel in life and ministry. My challenge to you this day is to dare to be different. Dare to be a ‘stranger’ on earth. Dare to live differently. Dare to speak differently. You know Jeremiah’s ministry required great courage. He had to dare to be different from the prophets around. They were all prophesying peace, but Jeremiah knew that the exile was coming. He was warning the people about the coming disaster. God said to him, “Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word. Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways [ Jeremiah 26:2-3]. However, ‘As soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, “You must die! [v.8]. Jeremiah’s response was again very courageous. He said, ‘Change the way you’re living change your behavior. Listen obediently to the Message of your God. Maybe God will reconsider the disaster he has threatened...If you kill me, you’re killing an innocent man… God sent me and told me what to say. You’ve been listening to God speak, not Jeremiah. Listen, we may not face the same pressure, but the world around us will often dislike us for being different. As it occurs during Advent, it is a perfect time to remember that Jesus himself was a migrant. In fact, the Bible is full of migration stories. Moses, Ruth, and the disciples were all migrants at one point or another. The whole of human history is a story of migration. Migration in search of food, land, water. Migration away from violence, destruction, famine. Today, our human migration story is one of closed borders and fear. People are leaving their homes because they are afraid, and countries are closing their borders because they are afraid. Our government is forcibly returning people who claim asylum to “safe third countries” (that aren’t very safe) that those migrants have journeyed through to get to the United States. Our government is jailing persons who have come here claiming asylum until their claims are processed. Our government is continuing to separate children from their parents, sometimes deporting parents without their children or deporting children without their parents. Our government is raiding businesses and rounding up everyone who doesn’t have legal work
authorization, and sometimes those that do. Our government is targeting people who are trying to get legal documentation through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Our government is cutting the numbers of work visas it offers each year. Our government is making it more difficult for family members and spouses of U.S. residents and citizens to join their family member in the U.S. Our government is cutting the number of refugees that will be resettled to only 18,000 in fiscal year 2020, down from 85,000 in fiscal year 2016. Our government is doing all of this through administrative rulemaking, not through legislative means. Most of these rules are being challenged in the court system. Congress hasn’t passed immigration legislation since 1996, and there have been no major changes to immigration laws since 1990. A lot has changed in the past 30 years, and our immigration system has not kept up. We must live out Jesus’ command to love our neighbors, including our migrant neighbors, not only on International Migrants Day but every day. Tell your congressional representatives to support the DREAM Act and humane immigration policies. Support a Global Ministries partner working with migrants around the world. They fought for a two-month delay to allow time for the sale and move. A Champion attorney argued against the delay, saying taxes were late dating back to 2012, which could have triggered a foreclosure years earlier. “We object to any delay in the removal of the Defendant, the former owner of the property,” the attorney wrote. “She should have been aware that her time in the property was coming to an end as early as December 2012, yet did not take steps to locate a new place to live until August 2018, after the property was already sold at sheriff’s sale.” A judge disagreed and granted more time for the move, through last January. In April, the family spotted the home on a “real estate-owned” auction site and was able to buy it back, renovate it, then sell it again over the summer. “We did it partially to spite them,” Bonnicelli said. But she only has one word to describe a case she’s currently handling: Crazy. Starting in 1996, her client, Joanne Diener, lived with her father in his Oceanside home. He passed away six months ago. Within 24 hours, the lender was calling Diener about the reverse mortgage and the potential for it to go into default.
She sent in a form indicating she wanted to purchase the property and got approved for traditional financing, only to receive a notice of default anyway. That was just the beginning. Help us report this story The loan servicer assumed the home was empty, posting a neon green sticker saying: "this property was found VACANT" on her door, triggering a chain of events usually taken to secure abandoned properties. “Four days later she came home to a notice of abandonment — in the same home she was living in and receiving letters from the lender,” Snow said. “The next day, a notice of trustee sale was posted for the home and her water was turned off for purported weatherization. It was 90 degrees.” Snow is filing legal documents with the San Diego County court officials trying to slow down a foreclosure, which can happen quickly under California law. Currently, the four-bedroom house is scheduled to be sold at auction the end of this month. Anyone can view it today on sites like Zillow, where it is listed as a “pre-foreclosure.” Snow said the lender pushed the home toward foreclosure before Diener had a chance to indicate her wishes and prove she had the financing. “It’s crazy what they’re trying to do to get her out of the house,” Snow said. A representative for the lender, Reverse Mortgage Funding, said she could not comment on the case, citing privacy concerns. Diener says she felt like the lender was trying to steal the home she lived in for 23 years. “I felt robbed,” she said. “I would describe it as a horror show that would not end.”

JASPER COLT, USA TODAY When Gatewood-Young's grandfather died in 2016, the family was surprised to discover that his rural Maryland home on 10 acres had a reverse mortgage lien against it. He had drawn down about $150,000 with his reverse mortgage — a sum that had to be paid back for the property to be transferred to his family. “The executor of his estate was my aunt and (she) explained that Wells Fargo had already communicated that if we did nothing it would go into foreclosure,” Gatewood-Young said. “I said, ‘Absolutely not.’” Gatewood-Young, the only heir interested in the property, got herself qualified for a traditional home loan and started the purchase process. That’s when 200 pages of title history arrived showing that her grandfather only held a one-fifth ownership stake in the property. It was unclear who owned the rest. Ever since, the lender has been referencing an impending foreclosure, due to the death and non-repayment of the reverse mortgage. Even after a court fight to resolve the title dispute, several expired appraisals, costly upkeep of the property and complaints to a string of lenders, servicers, regulators and even her congressman, Gatewood-Young still has not been able to buy the family home. In a January 2017 response to her complaint, Wells Fargo and the new servicer, Champion Mortgage, denied any wrongdoing and said a foreclosure had been paused while the title issues were sorted out by their attorneys. Gatewood-Young continued fighting in court, finally clearing the title this fall. All that remained was the purchase price dispute. After USA TODAY contacted Wells Fargo inquiring about Gatewood-Young's case in December, the bank changed course, saying it will write off more than $30,000 in costs, allowing her to pay off the loan at its 2016 balance. “She’s been working diligently all along and it was a complicated issue,” said bank spokesman Tom Goyda. “Once we were made aware of the specifics, we were able to get it resolved.” When Grace Bonnicelli thinks of reverse mortgages, she remembers a particularly troubling knock on her mother's door in 2018. A man asked her sister, “Is this house for sale?” She quickly told him no, he apologized, but mentioned that he had seen the posting in the
newspaper, Bonnicelli recalled. The reality was even worse: not only was the home listed for sale, it had been sold back to the bank at a sheriff’s sale the previous day. Our commitment as an organization is to earn the trust of our customers and continue providing safe, high quality, and reliable water.” “Tonight we began demonstrating to our ratepayers and public that we are will operate in a sound, responsible manner, with the ratepayer’s best interests in mind,” said Vice President Kyle Crowther. “We are going to move forward together as an organization in restoring integrity, accountability, and transparency. This is my commitment to our community.” Recognizing the need make serious changes to provide transparency and accountability for ratepayers, the WVWD outlined steps to increase accountability and transparency for ratepayers. These steps include: •applying for a Transparency Certificate of Excellence Award. The certificate covers all general, website and outreach best practices and requirements regarding transparency for special districts. The certificate is administered by the SDLF, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides recognition and certifications to special districts and officials to enhance services to the public. •live-streaming the meeting for customers and community stakeholders. Furthermore, on January 9, 2020, a special meeting of the Board of Directors will be conducted to review all professional services contracts within West Valley Water District. The review has been directed by the Board of Directors to ensure accountability for the ratepayers of the District. The District will provide all required resources, to include: fiscal, personnel, and management oversight, in the pursuit and completion of the accreditation. Our leadership will place an emphasis on continuing education completed by having each of the district’s board members and executive staff trained in ethics, governance and leadership as required by the accreditation. Additional requirements by the Special District Leadership Fund include current ethics training for all board members, compliance with the Ralph M.
