HBCU Students for Biden and Black Students for Biden: ‘Four More Years of Trump Means Death for Many African Americans’ NNPA NEWSWIRE — “We can’t continue to live in fear with the police’s militarization and where Black lives don’t matter. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia Just how crucial will the engagement of Black students, including those from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) be in the 2020 election? Black Students for Biden and HBCU Students for Biden say that it could mean the difference between life and death for many African Americans. During a 30-minute livestream this week, sponsored by the Biden-Harris campaign and featuring actress Yandy SmithHarris, an enthusiastic but focused group of young African Americans declared the race between Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden and President Donald Trump a battle not just for the soul of the country, but for the lives of Black people. “So many of our civil liberties are under attack, including the right to vote, the right to assemble, to be who we are and to exist equally,” said Smith-Harris, the star of “Love & Hip Hop: New York.” “Our basic freedoms are under attack, so it’s incredibly important right now, more than ever, to vote for Biden. I feel like we are back in 1963, so many of the things that Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for are prevalent today.” Smith-Harris continued: “We have to realize that our vote can change our lives. It is that serious. This administration has made blatant racism okay, and it has no concern for Black lives. “We are traumatized that we can’t walk outside or sleep in our beds, if we continue with this administration, where you can be called a patriot when you kill someone.

“We can’t continue to live in fear with the police’s militarization and where Black lives don’t matter. If we don’t change the face of what democracy looks like in this country, there will be no more democracy. “There is no way we can continue with another four years of this administration where we are dying and being incarcerated at crazy amounts. We have to stop this, there’s no room for error and there’s, no room for [uncertainty].” Hosted by National HBCU Students for Biden Co-Chair William Fairfax, and Lubna Sebastian, the National Director of Students for Biden, the event kicked off a series hosted by the Black Students for Biden and HBCU Students for Biden. Organizers said the forums

provide opportunities to highlight the easiest ways students can get involved, why Black youth is so important in making change, and how to mobilize their friends and families for the election. As a Black student and senior at Duke University, a primarily white institution (PWI), Adrianna Williams, the co-chair of Black Students for Biden, said the odds are stacked against her and other African Americans each day. “Several of our PWIs are institutionally racist,” Williams declared. “I know for the past four years, as much as I love my experience at Duke and the memories and friends, as a Black woman, I wake up every day knowing that I’m going to be faced with professors who don’t see me as I am and

don’t see that my voice matters.” Williams, who lists Shirley Chisolm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, as her role model, said it’s a fight each day for equality. “My role model said if you don’t have a seat at the table, bring one,” said Williams, noting that she had paraphrased Chisolm. “Activism takes on different forms. Activism at a PWI is a way for Black students to support one another and remind ourselves that we matter,” Williams exclaimed. “We are fighting for our rights to thrive and prosper in these spaces every single day.” Williams added that among her concerns about the Trump administration is inadequate healthcare for African Americans. “The state of public health in

California Energy Commission Approves Funding For Hydrogen Stations In Inland Empire Community News SACR AMENTO – The California Energy Commission (CEC) has approved funding for four new hydrogen fueling stations in the Inland Empire. The stations are slated for construction in Ontario, San Bernardino, Corona, and Fontana. “The network of hydrogen refueling stations, hydrogen fuel supply, and the use of hydrogen electric vehicles will support California’s air quality improvement and

climate change goals,” noted the CEC in its announcement. T h r e e c o m p a n ie s — FirstElement, Shell and Iwatani — were awarded funds for 36 stations to service passenger vehicles across the state. Another 87 stations were also recommended for future funding. Combined, this represents well over $200 million in private sector investments to help the state reach its goal of 200 stations by 2025. Demand for the CEC funding

was strong; applications for more than $100 million above what was available from the CEC were submitted. We are incredibly pleased with continued growing interest from the private sector,” said Teresa Cooke, Executive Director of the California Hydrogen Coalition. “California's policies are clearly working and we call on the Energy Commission to fully allocate the remaining dollars so we can build a statewide network

The funding builds on California’s leadership in hydrogen infrastructure deployment. The state has 42 hydrogen stations open. The stations are funded by Assembly Bill 8, passed in 2013.

primary, prenatal, and other important care, and whose patients are disproportionately members of racial and ethnic minority groups, including African Americans. As president, Biden has pledged to invest $70 billion in HBCUs to close the funding disparity between them and PWIs. In the plan, $10 billion would go toward funding retention, enrollment, and job placement for alumni. “I come from the Harlem projects, and it was a challenge. So, I think I understand right now, being on the other side, a little older, how important [it is] for this community to speak out on what they’re dealing with,” Smith-Harris said. “I remember when I went to Howard University and wondered how I would pay for it, how I would pay rent and survive. I graduated during the mid-recession, and now we’re facing the same thing with the coronavirus pandemic with people losing their jobs,” she noted. Smith-Harris continued: “Black voices are loud and vital. I went on an HBCU campus tour, and there are so many Black youths who were so real about where they were, so many people are making decisions over the lives of young Black people who have no idea of what they’re everyday challenges are. “They weren’t exposed to just how vital their voices are on the legislative level. They realized how vital they are. Black youth have a very important role in remixing our democracy and the principles and practices because they are now at the forefront.”

A joint investigation by CalMatters and The Salinas Californian uncovered reports of guest worker outbreaks where neither workers nor counties were notified. Gov. G av i n Newsom could arm California’s vast agricultural workforce and local public health officers with more information about workplace coronavirus outbreaks under a bill that’s now on his desk. The “Right to Know” bill, AB 685, by Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes, a Democrat from San Bernardino, would require California employers to notify

their employees of COVID-19 cases, as well as alert county public health departments. Companies haven’t always notified public health officials — or even their own employees — of outbreaks even as positive cases spike across poultry plants, food processing facilities and fruit and vegetable farms. And even when public health departments are made aware of outbreaks, some counties refuse to release it to the public. That’s led to the push for increased transparency — and frustration that such rules aren’t already in place amid a pandemic. “Essential workers kept working through the pandemic expecting they would be safe in the workplace, or at least informed when their health was in danger,” said Gómez Reyes in an interview. “In every district we’re

Black girls face some of the greatest barriers to educational opportunities because of racial and gender biases embedded within school discipline policies, dress codes, and codes of conduct that target their cultural identity. These biases manifest as punishments that have more to do with who these girls are rather than what they do. During the current uncertainty of a global pandemic and the beginning of a historic public reckoning on racism in the

United States, school districts are at a turning point in which they must make intentional and specific policy and financial decisions to address the legacy of 400 years of systemic anti-Blackness that is folded in our nation’s fabric. To help districts and schools do this critical work, The Education Trust partnered with the National Women’s Law Center to develop a new guide to respond to this moment and provide decisionmakers with a common language and practices that can be used to reform exclusionary discipline policies and improve school climate to help address the needs of girls of color.

Gómez Reyes credited the story for shedding light to the severity of the problem. “Until (investigative work is) done, everyone else is trying to piece things together, but when you have a publication like CalMatters publish something like that…now you realize it’s even bigger,” she said. Notably, the investigation found: Santa Barbara County Public Health Director Van DoReynoso said she didn’t learn of an outbreak at one employer that ensnared 91 by mid-August until the state agency charged with regulating workplace safety notified her of a man’s death. One worker caught up in the outbreak told reporters he felt abandoned and ignored in quarantine once the hotel door shut behind him. Another who worked alongside people diagnosed with COVID-19 said her coworkers were told to continue working as long as they didn’t have symptoms. She feared catching the virus herself.

Community/Education News SAC R A M E N T O —T h e State Board of Education today approved criteria for California students to earn a new Seal of Civic Engagement, an incentive aimed at encouraging active and ongoing citizenship. To earn the seal, students must demonstrate excellence in civic learning, participation in civicsrelated projects, contributions to their community, and an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the American democratic system. Students may earn the seal on a transcript, diploma, or Certificate of Completion. California history and social science teachers worked in partnership with the California Department of Education (CDE) to develop the initial requirements. “The future of our democracy depends on a knowledgeable and actively engaged citizenry,” said State Board President Linda Darling-Hammond. “With this new seal, we hope to prepare all students with an empathetic concern for others, a deep understanding of democracy, and the civic engagement skills needed to contribute to the welfare of their local communities, the state, and the country.” “We know that when young people activate their voices, they can be among the strongest change agents in our communities,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “Education is the cornerstone of realizing our democratic ideals, and this new seal puts additional tools in students’ hands as they work to shape the future.” Since then-Governor Brown signed AB 24 into law in October 2017, the CDE has worked with

teachers, a variety of stakeholder groups, and the public to draft criteria and guidance for the seal. The criteria a re: Be engaged in academic work in a productive way; Demonstrate a competent understanding of U.S. and Califor n ia const it ut ions; functions and governance of local governments; tribal government structures and organizations; the role of the citizen in a constitutional democracy; and democratic principles, concepts, and processes; Participate in one or more informed civic engagement project(s) that address realworld problems and require students to identify and inquire into civic needs or problems, consider varied responses, take action, and reflect on efforts; Demonstrate civic knowledge, sk ills, a nd d isposit ions through self-ref lection; and Exhibit character traits that reflect civic-mindedness and a commitment to positively impact the classroom, school, community, and/or society. Interim Health Officer issues smoke advisory for El Dorado Fire Community News San Bernardino County Interim Health Officer Dr. Gustafson advises county residents who live near areas affected by the El Dorado Fire to stay alert to changing smoke levels and be prepared to act accordingly. Smoky conditions can be hazardous for young children, the elderly, individuals with heart conditions or chronic lung disease such as asthma and bronchitis, and individuals with other respiratory ailments. Older adults and children should remain indoors, keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Individuals with asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other lung or heart diseases should make sure they have at least a five-day supply of medication on hand. Individuals with asthma should consult their physician about an asthma management plan and stick to it during unusually smoky conditions. Listen for radio and television messages about fires in your area. It is recommended that air-conditioning be run on a "recirculation" function. If

smoke is present, it will be easier to breathe indoors if air is recirculating instead of drawing smoky air from outdoors. People should contact their doctor if they have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue. This is important not only for people with chronic lung or heart disease, but also for individuals who have not been previously diagnosed with such illnesses. Smoke can "unmask" or produce symptoms of such diseases. The Health Officer has not advised businesses or other operations to close or release staff. They should, however, stay alert to local conditions and take appropriate action based on the Health Advisory. Oscar nominated Regina King is the first African-American woman to have a film play at the Venice Film Festival with her directorial debut 'One Night in Miami'. The film received unanimous praise from critics at the festival. 'One Night in Miami' themes are timely. "It's a love letter to the Black man's experience in America" King said. The

filming began in January a few months before COVID-19 struck and she considered pausing filming. Then George Floyd and Breonna Taylor happened and she decided that had to finish filming. RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Ca.— To ease the economic blow from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Riverside County households receiving CalFresh food assistance can expect a supplemental benefit this Sunday, September 13. The CalFresh Program, federally known as the Suppleme nt al Nut r it ion Assistance Program (SNAP), issues monthly electronic benefits that can be used at many markets and food stores. The program helps to improve the health and well-being of qualified households and individuals by providing them a means to meet their nutritional needs. For every dollar of CalFresh money spent, $1.79 is generated in local economic activity, according to California Department of Social Services. This Sunday’s benefit is the sixth emergency allotment of supplemental CalFresh benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be automatically deposited onto customers’ Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. Another supplemental benefit will be issued October 18. The supplemental CalFresh benefits will bring eligible households not already receiving the maximum amount up to the

maximum monthly allotment for their household size. For example, a household of two that would typically receive $53 in CalFresh benefits could be temporarily eligible to receive the maximum of $355. Since April, California has issued more than $68 million in emergency CalFresh allotments to more than 75,000 households in Riverside County. “Unemployment remains high and the needs are great,” said Allison Gonzalez, program director over Self-Sufficiency at the county’s Department of Public Social Services (DPSS). “Every dollar makes a difference for many families, especially right now, and this additional assistance is helping struggling families and seniors keep healthy food on the table.” Customers received on average an extra $187 last month. Gonzalez says it’s worth it for people to apply and see if they’re eligible. Customers can apply at GetCalFresh.org or by calling the DPSS Customer Service Center at 1-877-410-8827. Since the end of April, CalFresh customers have been able to use their benefits on Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards to buy groceries online at Amazon and Walmart.

The project supports com mu n it y engagement, treatment and recovery assistance to help combat the opioid crisis in eastern San Bernardino County. “Even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we have to continue our efforts to provide care and treatment to those struggling with addiction. No community is immune to the opioid crisis,

that’s why I’ll continue working to support organizations like Reach Out and comprehensive health care funding for San Bernardino County,” said Aguilar. “Prevention and response services are Reach Out’s primary focus in the Morongo Basin. With this funding, we will be able to work hand-in-hand with the community to help those impacted by opioids,” said Teresa Fernandez, Director of Community Health & Policy for Reach Out. Rep. You may have decided not to look at the recent Republican National Convention on television, and many Americans think President Trump broke the law by abusing the Hatch Act. But our president is smiling, because he got away with it. The president needed a convention bou nce and, according to polls, White voters have increased their support of his policies. By comparison, following the Democratic National Convention, held a week earlier, nothing changed statically in terms of support. A recent Morning Consult

poll that asked 4,035 likely voters which candidate they would pick, found Biden leading Trump by 6 percentage points, 50 percent to 44 percent. It marked a 4-point improvement for Trump from his standing going into the convention on August 23, when Biden led 52 percent to 42 percent. “The poll had a 2-point margin of error,” according to Morning Consult’s by Eli Yokley. The Democrats have cast the President as a failed leader, but Trump’s supporters painted him as a success and the last line of defense against radical socialism. Black Lives Matter is trying to defund the police Departments and when you need a policeman, there will be a busy signal. Many of the mayors in many cities are finding out that Trump administration is paying people to create violence during peaceful protests. As the race gets closer, all of the Republicans will be lying, and it is very hard to know what a lie is and where the truth starts. On the last night of the convention Giuliani said, progressive Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York is the reason crime has elevated in the city. But when Giuliani was mayor in 2000 the yearly murder rate was 673, compared to 318 in 2019. It is so easy to lie and give half of the story or picture. During the last night, a supporter kept telling the country that the president created the strongest economy in American history and strengthened Medicare and Social Security. However, Obama’s last three years were stronger than Trump’s first three years, and the present economy is close to a depression. Ending payroll taxes would deplete the Social Security fund in two years. It is obvious that the majority of the Republican National Convention was one continuous lie

but squeezing 1,500 people on the South lawn of the White House was irresponsible during a coronavirus pandemic. This was the wrong message to send Americans, and President Trump does not care. “He once again claimed to have done more for the African American community than any president since Abraham Lincoln – ignoring Harry Truman’s integration of the military, Lyndon Johnson’s passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, and many other accomplishments. One might wonder, if this is true, why polls show just 5 percent of Black voters supporting him, says Fred Kaplan of the Slate, an online magazine. As Republicans and President Trump build a campaign on lies the numbers are still in the Democrats favor. It is time for the Democrats to expose the lies and speak truth to power. The major key to Biden winning this election is getting support from the 18-to-30-year old voters, the Black voters, and the women voters.

NNPA NEWSWIRE — John David Washington has crossed a bridge. He’s no longer just the son of a superstar actor. He is a superstar actor. Seconds after he’s on screen, you get the deal. He is as confident, adventurous and acrobatic as Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible series. As cool and debonair as any of the Bond men. As his character becomes more poised and powerful, you become more assured that you are watching the blossoming of an actor who can dominate scenes that should have been stolen by veterans like Kenneth Branagh and Michael Caine. Warner Bros delayed the release of Tenet during the pandemic until it could open it in theaters. It was a wise decision. The film belongs on a big screen. In fact, for maximum effect, viewers should consider experiencing the movie in an IMAX theater. Director/writer Christopher Nolan is nearly unequaled when it comes to giving audiences unimaginable, spellbinding visuals: The Dark Knight, Inception, Dunkirk. He filmed Tenet in 70mm and IMAX, giving audiences a chance for a big picture adventure. Regular screens and TV’s can’t do justice to the international espionage, sci-fi trickery and devious mayhem that unravels gorgeously (cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, Dunkirk, Interstellar) across seven countries. Go big and the visuals will make your head spin. A sinister group of commandos

takes over an opera house, holding the audience hostage and preparing to blow up the place. A counter group of combatants intervenes. One of the potential saviors is known simply as the Protagonist (John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman). As he tries to thwart mass murder, he notices a curious event. international, multicultural cast is a pleasure, and are dressed like they belong on a runway (costume design Jeffrey Kurland, Dunkirk). As a director, Christopher Nolan is both an artist and a visionary. Whether you like or dislike his movies, his skills and taste in composition, lighting, staging, segues, drama, action scenes and big dreams are impeccable. His ability to pull performances out of his cast that fit the canvas he’s created is unapproachable. He has few peers in the industry. The f low, choreography, timing—he approaches it like an engineer building a race car. Nolan’s scriptwriting is innovative too. The film’s concept and his ability to wrangle the most absurd or obtuse notions of physics into a plausible plotline is amazing. If anything, it’s overly ambitious. There is no way audiences will have a full understanding of the science behind the time inversion concept and how objects can go backward or what “effect before cause” can really mean. It’s too complicated. Even with Priya and others explaining its intricacies, the details and data become a

blur. It would take a semester at MIT, and not a 180-minute movie, to clear things up. The magic of the odd power is on view. The script should have explained it loosely, a couple of times, and then let the visuals do the hard work. Let the audience perceive what they wish to perceive. Also, it feels like Tenet has four acts and two endings. Certainly, during the last moments of its 2h 30min length, it drifts from thriller espionage story with plenty of action, to a finale that descends into a typical action genre film orgy fitted with timing devices, feats of desperation and a final generic lunge at saving the world from an apocalypse. It didn’t need to do that. Some movie fans are still skeptical about venturing into a theater to see gems like Tenet. Those fears are basic survival instincts kicking in during a very unpredictable pandemic. That said, the ideal way to watch Christopher Nolan’s extraordinary but flawed sci-fi/action/thriller and John David Washington’s brilliant performance is on a screen the size of the Titanic.

My best Zoom experiences are those when you forget about the platform itself (and those weird little boxes) because you’re so engaged in the actual conversation. It’s like you are actually in the same room together. This is the feeling I had recently speaking with leaders in the faith community about the power of the church to help organize lasting social change. On this Zoom call we talked about how this is our moment to be part of this bigger movement for justice. I love how the United Church of Christ isn’t shy about mixing our faith with politics because we know that at the heart of the Gospel is Jesus’ commitment to the spiritual, mental, and physical freedom and liberation of people wronged by unjust systems of oppression. On this transcendent Zoom call where we got to Be The Church, I listened to the Rev. JJ Flag, a UCC minister serving as a campus chaplain and serving on the UCC Disabilities Ministries Board, who shared that it’s important for churches who care about justice to do a “relationship audit.” He believes that we can build a just world for all when we engage in meaningful relationships with people who are different from us. JJ asks, “What if each one of us in the church partnered with someone to make sure they were registered and had a plan for how to vote? And if they needed help getting to the polls, we could help each other.” Also on the Zoom call was the Rev. Shernell Edney Stilley, a UCC minister serving as Associate Conference Minister in the New York Conference, and serving on the UCC Mental Health Network Board and on the UCC Board of Directors, who shared her belief that racial justice and mental health justice are interconnected. She says that we are seeing levels of trauma increase now because of the multiple pandemics, but that there has been trauma since the beginning for people traumatized by racism. When we prepare to vote, Shernell encourages us to pay

attention to who is supporting and strengthening mental healthcare for all. There weren’t just UCC folks on the Zoom call talking about how to put our faith into action, we had an ecumenical partner join us as well. One of the joys of serving in the UCC is our valued relationships with ecumenical partners. One of our partnerships is with the Interfaith Disabilities Advocacy Coalition (IDAC) where I met Lindsey Warburton. Lindsey is Co-Chair of IDAC, and is a member of the Episcopal Church where she serves in their DC office focusing on disability advocacy. In this election season, Lindsey reminds us that nearly 23% of the American electorate, over 35 million individuals, are people with disabilities. She encourages us to pay attention to what candidates are saying about quality, affordable healthcare for all. Luckily, this dynamic and inspiring conversation was recorded to share with you and your congregation. These factors combined with the impacts of the pandemic to jobs overall creates a significant and unexpected financial gap for some students in continuing their educational journey. “Despite the incredible disruptions the COVID-19 pandemic has created in their personal and academic lives, students remain some of the key drivers of change. Many are rising to the challenges we are all facing today, and they are working hard to make a difference in their communities,” said John Rasmussen, leader of the Student Lending at Wells Fargo. “These students are making a positive impact, but are faced with a negative impact from COVID that could limit their options. We want to help them remain on their academic paths and continue cultivating their potential to benefit those around them.” Expanding Support
