Breaking a century-old tradition in the name of health and safety, the largest convention organization in the world has moved its annual in-person event to a virtual format for the second time in as many years, canceling nearly 6,000 conventions in 240 lands. In an enthusiastic interview with the Black Press, Robert Hendriks, the U.S. Spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses, said that since 1897, summer conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses have been held yearly at stadiums, arenas, event centers, and theaters across the United States. Viewing an uplifting Biblebased program was a highlight of their year and gave attendees the opportunity to reunite with old friends and make new friends. In 2020, the pandemic unexpectedly interrupted that tradition moving the international religious organization to cancel in-person conventions throughout the world and launch a global virtual event. This was a first for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Powerful by Faith!” is the theme of the 2021 global event, which the witnesses are delivering
Wo r l d w i d e in more than 500 languages to households throughout the globe over six weekends during July and August 2021, uniting some 15 to 20 million people in 240 countries. Since the convention is typically held from Friday through Sunday, the program will be available in six installments corresponding to morning and afternoon sessions. “Friday” morning’s session began streaming and available for download on June 28, 2021. The potential risk of bringing thousands of people together in cities around the world prompted the organization to opt for a virtual platform for
the second consecutive year. “We didn’t just want to mitigate the risk, we wanted to eliminate the risk,” said Hendriks. “Our virtual convention unites our congregants around the world and keeps them safe.” The move to a virtual platform has not curbed the enthusiasm for the annual event. COVID-19 is on the attack once again in this country. As The New York Times’ Apoorva Mandavilli notes, the U.S. is up to 51,000 cases per day — four times what we saw a month ago. What’s happening?
Mandavilli writes, “The more contagious Delta variant may be getting the blame, but fueling its rise is an older, more familiar foe: vaccine hesitancy and refusal, long pervasive in the United States. Were a wider swath of the population vaccinated, there would be no resurgence — of the
Delta variant, or Alpha variant, or any other version of the coronavirus.” There’s also this maddening paragraph from Mandavilli’s story: “America is one of the few countries with enough vaccines at its disposal to protect every resident — and yet it has the highest rates of vaccine hesitance or refusal of any nation except Russia.” This refusal by so many Americans to get vaccinated has allowed COVID-19 to evolve. Appearing on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart,” Dr. Anthony Fauci said, “If you allow the virus to freely circulate because so many people are unvaccinated, you give it yet again another opportunity to
mutate even more.” There is some good news. So far, as Fauci said on MSNBC, vaccines seem to work against the delta variant. The delta variant is highly transmissible, but if you’re vaccinated, you likely are protected against being hospitalized or dying. ”But you let the virus circulate,” Fauci said, “you may get a variant that’s even worse.” Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Fauci was even more pessimistic, saying, “We’re going in the wrong direction. If you look at the inflection of the curve of new cases and … since we have 50% of the country is not fully vaccinated, that’s a problem, particularly when continued in next 2 columns
It’s not over yet: COVID dominates the news once again...continued you have a variant like delta, which has this extraordinary characteristic of being able to spread very efficiently and very easily from person to person. And we know we have many, many, many vulnerable people in this country who are unvaccinated. And that’s the reason why, as I have said so many times, we have the tools to blunt that and make that model wrong. But if we don’t vaccinate people, the model is going to predict that we’re going to be in trouble as we continue to get more and more cases.” Even if you’re vaccinated, it doesn’t mean you are 100% immune to testing positive for COVID-19. There have been breakthrough cases. Yet, as The Washington Post’s Ben Guarino reports, “The rash of such cases might suggest the coronavirus is regularly blasting by vaccinated people’s immune barriers. But these breakthrough infections are not surprising, nor do they suggest vaccines are widely failing.” In fact, it’s just the opposite. It shows the vaccines do work. Guarino writes, “Far more certain, based on clinical trials and real-world data, is that the three vaccines authorized by the Food and Drug Administration broadly protect people from the coronavirus’s harmful effects. The vaccines do this so well that doctors refer to them in almost rapturous terms.” Robert B. Darnell, a physician and biochemist at Rockefeller University in New York, told Guarino, “The vaccines are extraordinarily powerful and potent in working to prevent disease. They’re incredibly good.” The politics of COVID Former White House press
secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who is running for governor of Arkansas, wrote a guest column for The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette titled “The reasoning behind getting vaccinated.” For much of the column, Sanders touts the work of her former boss, Donald Trump, while complaining that the current administration and those who support Joe Biden haven’t given Trump enough credit in the fight against COVID-19. She takes jabs at Dr. Anthony Fauci and the so-called “because science says so” crowds, which includes what Sanders calls “arrogant, condescending politicians and bureaucrats.” After making sure that she made all that clear, she finally gets around to writing, “Based on the advice of my doctor, I determined that the benefits of getting vaccinated outweighed any potential risks.” She then goes on to talk about how important the “Trump vaccine” is for those in the state of Arkansas, and the benefits of being vaccinated. On one hand, the overwhelming theme that runs through Sanders’ column is political. On the other hand, anything that encourages someone to get the vaccine could be viewed as positive. Right through to the end, however, Sanders clearly is worried about the politics and offending anyone. Her final paragraph: “So to anyone still considering the merits of vaccination, I leave you with this encouragement: Pray about it, discuss it with your family and your doctor. Summer Graduates Strive For Their Diplomas Community /Education News
SBCUSD's 2020 Summer Graduation (pictured above) was a drive-thru event due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Class of 2021 summer graduates will enjoy a more traditional commencement ceremony. On Thursday, July 22, San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) staff and families will honor the 230 seniors who put forth the extra effort and spent the added hours to focus on their education during the summer so they could graduate with the Class of 2021. “These seniors not only had to face the challenges of COVID and more than a year of distance learning, they had their own, personal challenges to overcome,” said Secondary Education Director Sudha Venkatesan, “but they were willing to put in the work and make the sacrifices to earn their high school diploma.” Thanks to an easing of
COVID restrictions, SBCUSD was able to return to in-person commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2021. This includes the 2021 Summer Graduation. “Congratulations to the summer graduates in the Class of 2021,” said Secondary Education program specialist Bob Kirby. “We know it wasn’t easy, and we’re so proud that you stuck with it.” The graduation will be held at The Way World Outreach, 4680 Hallmark Parkway in San Bernardino, on July 22 starting at 6 p.m. Due to COVID restrictions, the District is limiting the number of guests to no more than seven per graduate, and all graduates and guests must wear face coverings.

California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond says school districts across the state are prepared to open safely in the fall even as COVID-19ncases surge in California and around the country. The new spike in COVID-19 positive rates across the state are driven by infections involving the more contagious Delta variant. Thurmond was speaking online at a recent Safe Schools for All seminar featuring several California education experts. On the call, Thurmond gave parents a preview of what they will likely face when their children return to class in the fall. He mentioned that he visited Camarena Elementary School in the Chula Vista Elementary School District and that the school opened July 21 successfully implementing the new mask requirements. About 900 of the 1000-member student body were present, he said. “Everyone was wearing a mask,” he said. “Everyone was following protocol.”
On Friday, Thurmond visited a summer learning program at Monte Vista Elementary School in Los Angeles County. "The CDC and the California Department of Public Health have already provided guidance that even as case rates increase, if everyone is wearing a mask and everyone who can get a vaccine gets one, we can keep our schools open safely," Thurmond said. Thurmond also said that vaccines were vital to returning to normal. He also reminded African Americans to make sure to get the vaccines. However, he noted that the Black community was lagging behind the vaccination rate. As of July 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said 4% of vaccinated people in California are Black. African Americans account for 6% of California’s population. Vaccines are now available for children aged 12 to 18. Thurmond also added that while many parents have complained about distance learning, some continued in next 2 columns

African American parents say they prefer it because their children don’t have to deal with bullying or harassment. One of the featured speakers at the online seminar was Dr. Naomi Bardach, Safe Schools for All team lead. She gave a presentation on some important facts to know about the coronavirus and how it affects children. Bardach reminded parents that scientists and medical professionals had gathered a lot more information about the coronavirus since it first hit America more than a year ago. In 2020, schools closed to prevent the spread of the coronavir us and children transitioned to distance learning conducted mainly through online classes. However, Bardach said parents have noticed that there are some downsides to this form of instruction. She said parents have observed that their children are experiencing emotional issues such as depression and sleeplessness. Some children are missing the social interaction of being in school. Bardach also said medical research has shown that children
are less likely to catch the coronavirus than older people. According to her, most children contract the disease from a close relative, not from fellow students or school personnel. However, there are things that adults can do to reduce the spread of the virus among children. “Vaccines for adults are key to prevention in kids,” she said. “Vaccines mean kids can return to the things they enjoy.” Schools plan to return to inclass education with a host of new weapons to fight the coronavirus pandemic. According to Bardach, some of the methods the schools will use to contain the virus are testing, masks, ventilation and increased sanitation. “Masks are very effective in preventing transmission,” she said. There are several ways to get vaccinated, such as at-school sites, health departments and pharmacies. Schools also offer testing. The state has provided schools with $5 million to pay for rapid testing. Another recommendation to reduce the spread of the coronavirus is to make sure sick children remain at home, said Bardach.
The resource outlines how American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds can be used to improve indoor air quality and is part of the Department’s broader efforts to support schools as they prepare to welcome students back to in-person learning this fall and build back better. The release of the resource coincides with U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona’s visit to Kelley Lake Elementary School in Decatur, Georgia, that will use ARP funds to invest in indoor air quality improvements and will be offering in-person learning to all K-12 students for the 2021-2022 school year. “Protecting our schools and communities from the spread of COVID-19 is the first step in bringing more students back to in-person learning and reemerging from this crisis even stronger than we were before,” said Secretary Cardona. “With the American Rescue Plan, schools and districts now have access to unprecedented resources that will enable them to ensure proper ventilation and
maintain healthy learning and working environments. At the Department, we are committed to helping communities identify how to use these resources quickly and effectively as they prepare to welcome all students back to in-person learning this fall.” The resource outlines how schools can invest ARP funds, as well as previous rounds of relief funding, to take immediate action to improve indoor air quality, such as the inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, replacement, and upgrading of projects in school facilities. This can include system upgrades, filtering, purification, and other air cleaning fans, and window and door repair. While these investments can provide an important foundation for schools to take action now to improve indoor air quality, more must be done to improve the infrastructure in schools across the country. That’s why President Biden has proposed additional resources in his Build Back Better agenda to rebuild our nation’s public schools.

During a speech in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 13, the President made a “moral case” for voting rights and pledged to do whatever he could to protect ballot access as American votes face “authoritarian and anti-American restrictions.” At the same time, Vice President Harris hinted to NPR that it might be time to consider unconventional measures to stop Republicans from restricting access and denying certain citizens the right to vote. The network noted that the Vice President intimated that she had started talks with senators about a voting-rights exception to the filibuster. “I believe that of all the issues that the United States Congress can take up, the right to vote is the right that unlocks all the other things,” Harris told NPR.
“And for that reason, it should be one of its highest priorities.” When pressed on whether she supported a carveout to the filibuster for voting rights proposed by Congressman James Clyburn (D-S.C.), Harris said, “I don’t mean this in any offense, but I’m not going to negotiate this way. But I’m certainly having conversations with folks.” Most legislative bills need at least 60 votes to pass the evenly divided U.S. Senate, meaning at least 10 Republicans must support the measure. The GOP almost unanimously has rejected bills that would make it easier for all Americans to vote, particularly sen ior s a nd m i nor it ies. Perhaps the most important of those things, the most fundamental
of those things, is the right to vote,” the President insisted. “The right to vote freely… The right to vote fairly, the right to have your vote counted. The Democratic threshold is liberty. With it, anything is possible. Without it, nothing, nothing. “This is a test of our ti me,” Biden conti nued. He called the suppression laws in places like Texas and Georgia the most significant test of American democracy since the Civil War. “That’s not hyperbole — since the Civil War,” the President remarked. “The Confederates back then never breached the Capitol as insurrectionists did on Jan. 6. I’m not saying this to alarm you. I’m saying this because you should be alarmed.” The President explained that things could and should be different. “We have the means — we just need the will. The will to save and strengthen our democracy,” Biden exclaimed. “We have to prepare now. As I said time and again, no matter what, you can never stop the American people from voting. They will decide, and the power must always be with the people. That’s why just like we did in 2020. We have to prepare for 2022.” The President concluded that the push for voting rights legislation must continue. “[The For the People Act] would help end voter suppression in states. Get dark money out of politics. Give voice to people. Create fair district maps and end partisan political gerrymandering,” the President arg ued. “As soon as Congress passes the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, I will sign it and let the whole world see it. That will be an important moment.”

California Implements First-in-the-Nation Measures to Encourage State Employees and Health Care Workers to Get Vaccinated State employees and health care workers must show proof of vaccination or get tested regularly State encourages all local governments and businesses to adopt similar measures State/Government/Business News SACRAMENTO – Today, the State of California is taking decisive action to combat the spread of COVID-19, protect vulnerable communities and ensure that the state can safely remain open – implementing a first-in-the-nation standard to require all state workers and workers in health care and highrisk congregate settings to either show proof of full vaccination or be tested at least once per week, and encourage all local government and other employers to adopt a similar protocol. “We are now dealing with a pandemic of the unvaccinated, and it’s going to take renewed efforts to protect Californians from the dangerous Delta variant,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “As the state’s largest employer, we are leading by example and requiring all state and health care workers to show proof of vaccination or be tested regularly, and we are encouraging local governments and businesses to do the same. Vaccines are safe – they protect our family, those who truly can’t get vaccinated, our children and our economy. Vaccines are the way we end this pandemic.” California will also be requiring health care settings to verify that
workers are fully vaccinated or tested regularly. Unvaccinated workers will be subject to at least weekly COVID-19 testing and will be required to wear appropriate PPE. This requirement also applies to high-risk congregate settings like adult and senior residential facilities, homeless shelters and jails. These steps will help protect vulnerable patients and residents. The new policy for state workers will take effect August 2 and testing will be phased in over the next few weeks. The new policy for health care workers and congregate facilities will take effect on August 9, and health care facilities will have until August 23 to come into full compliance. Despite California leading the nation in vaccinations, with more than 44 million doses administered and 75 percent of the eligible population having received at least one dose, the state is seeing increasing numbers of people who refused to get the vaccine being admitted to the ICU and dying. This increase is heavily due to the Delta variant, which is more contagious and kills people faster: As of last week, California’s statewide case rate more than quadrupled from a low in May of 1.9 cases/100,000/day
to at least 9.5 cases/100,000. Our testing positivity was at a low of 0.7 percent in June, now it has risen to 5.2 percent. Our hospitalizations were at a low in June of under 900, and we are now approaching 3,000. The vast majority of new cases are among the unvaccinated, with 600 percent higher case rates among the unvaccinated than for those who are vaccinated. “California has administered more vaccines than any other state, with 75 percent of those eligible having gotten at least one dose, and we were weeks ahead of meeting President Biden’s 70 percent goal. But we must do more to fight disinformation and encourage vaccine-hesitant communities and individuals,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly. “The Delta variant is up to 60 percent more infectious than the Alpha strain but many times more infectious than the original COVID-19 strain. If you have been waiting to get vaccinated, now is the time.” The State of California remains committed to keeping the state’s economy open while ensuring that employees feel safe in the workplace. To that end, the state is encouraging employers to
ensure that their employees are vaccinated, and will lead by example by implementing new vaccination measures for state and health care workers. In addition to these new measures, the state continues its efforts to vaccinate Californians. Last week, California surpassed 2 million newly vaccinated individuals since launching its incentive program, Vax for the Win. The program increased HPI Q1 vaccinations, and increased doses administered to the Latinx population by 10 percent. It also successfully slowed the rate of decline that California was experiencing in vaccination rates. The program’s peak showed a 33 percent increase in vaccinations, “outpacing the inoculation trends in much of the country,” including more recently a 4.4 percent increase for the week ending July 14 – a promising sign in California, as vaccination rates declined nationwide. In the preliminary data for the week ending July 25th, we’ve seen an increase of 16 percent in the number of people getting their first doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, from 220,294 two weeks ago to 254,807 this past week. those who have been hit the hardest by systemic racism will now have access to economic opportunity and upward mobility.” The National Black Bank Foundation’s wholly-owned investment unit, the Black Bank Fund, is making a historic injection of tier 1 capital, expected to reach $250 million by 2025. SPLC Action Fund urges U.S. Department of Education to prevent racial disparities and discrimination in school discipline State/Government News MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The SPLC Action Fund has submitted comments to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the U.S. Department of Education (ED) regarding the administration of school discipline. The comments urge ED to recognize and address racial disparities and other forms of discrimination that remain prevalent in our public education system while also moving forward with new discipline procedures that improve upon the vague and ineffective guidelines that exist today. The comments include a special focus on how the presence of school police, or School Resource Officers, exacerbate race-based, disproportionate discipline. Students who are subjected to punitive and exclusionary discipline, including suspensions, expulsions, and cor poral punishment, are at increased risk of dropping out of school and having future involvement with the juvenile or criminal justice system. It has also been proven that our existing school discipline policies disproportionately impact students with disabilities and students of color – especially Black girls – even though they do not commit more disciplinable offenses than white students. In the South, these disparities are even more significant. The following is a statement from Margaret Huang, President and CEO of SPLC Action Fund.
"We are calling on the Department of Education to analyze the conditions that push so many students out of school, and aggressively work to dismantle those conditions. We know that conditions such as a zerotolerance disciplinary culture, overreliance on exclusionary discipline, and excessive police presence in schools have led to stark discipline disparities for Black students, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ youth. Research consistently shows that Black students receive more severe disciplinary outcomes for the same behaviors as white students, and their behaviors tend to be perceived as more problematic or threatening. “The federal guidance to schools on discipline must be updated, strengthened and reissued. The current guidance has left local and state educational agencies without clarity on how to effectively reform their discipline policies and practices. Unless the current guidance is updated and strengthened, school systems will continue policies that increase racial disparities in discipline while doing nothing to deal with trauma or restorative justice. Especially in the South, schools continue to rely on punitive and harmful disciplinary policies and practices – including corporal punishment – that are not restorative or trauma-informed, serve no pedagogical purpose, and are discriminatorily enforced – continued on page 7

Snake Eyes is a welcomed opportunity to see a cast of talented Asian actors dazzle. Even in an action franchise film built around a Hasbro toy doll, they excel. The film is an extension of a franchise started in 2009 with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, when an elite military unit of special operatives (aka G.I. Joe) combated a sinister syndication of arms dealers known as Cobra. Among the players were Snake Eyes (as played by Scottish actor Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun, The Magnificent Seven). An additional chapter, G.I Joe: Retaliation, was released in 2013 and directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians). This new entry details the origin of the two aforementioned characters.
Snake Eyes (now played by Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians) is known for participating in fight clubs, where he takes a beating yet wins his matches. (How he attained his skills is never explained, and that’s a flaw.) As he brawls, his abilitiy to defeat larger foes gets noticed by a smarmy arms dealer, Kenta (Takehiro Hira). The crook drafts him into his gang with the promise that he will help Snake Eyes solve the mystery of a traumatizing incident that has haunted him since childhood. We Christians often think that “humanitarian aid” is synonymous with love for others. However, the so-called humanitarian response to the most recent crisis in Cuba is one of those examples in which a donation initiative, far from arising from love for those who suffer, lends itself to dominance agendas. The Caribbean island is experiencing a lack of medicines and supplies. Also, a recent rise in cases of Covid-19 and other complications are affecting the daily lives of Cubans there. Because of that, several media campaigns have requested a “humanitarian corridor” for Cuba. Such a corridor consists of the requirement to the Cuban government to allow the entry of "humanitarian flights" so that Cubans residing abroad can travel to Cuba and deliver basic necessities without any customs procedures or check by Cuban authorities on the island. The Rev. Joel Ortega Dopico, Executive Secretary of the Council of Churches of Cuba, told me in a recent dialogue, “You cannot impose a concept of ‘humanitarian aid.’ It is an undue interference with the sovereignty of the Cuban people. They include the possibility of military intervention against us.” Much like today, self-interested generosity and governmentbenefitting ‘humanitarian aid’ were common in the ancient Roman Empire. The Roman Empire promoted clientelism in the sphere of relations between its subjects and citizens. Each favor created a bond of dependence. People were obligated to an act of reciprocity to equal the “blessing” received. All of this created an environment of competition, subjection, and domination between classes and castes, and the competitive culture served the oppressive interests of the Empire.
The Apostle Paul, writing during Roman Empire rule, challenged the church to adopt a different culture – one that defended the dignity and integrity of the human being,. Paul responded to his generous Philippian supporters, saying, “I know how to live humbly, and I know how to have abundance; in everything and for everything I am taught, both to be satiated and to be hungry, so to have abundance as to be in need. I can do everything in Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:12-13). Paul described his independence not as a source of pride, but as a liberating value to the gift that the Philippians had offered him. More than self-sufficiency, dependence to Paul did not mean a human pattern but rather generous divine goodness. Paul placed the solidarity of the Philippians in its proper perspective: Paul depended on God, and i God supplied the Philippians for what is lacking (Philippians 4:19). Amid a crisis like the one Cuba is experiencing, we must call for relationships that emerge from grace. No “humanitarian corridor” that lends itself to the violation of the sovereignty of the Cuban people is needed. Instead, “jubilee grace” is needed to demand that the U.S. lift the economic blockade against Cuba, which has affected the well-being of the island for more than sixty years. Faced with the “humanitarian aid” offered as a Trojan Horse for private interests, I call for loving respect for the sovereignty and selfdetermination of the Cuban people. Thus, we will surely see the face of God, who calls us to give with grace what we receive by grace. The real hoax; Claims of widespread voter fraud

A former U.S. Commanderin-Chief has made it his habit to immediately label any claims, no matter how factual, not aligned with his branding of information as “a witch hunt” or “a hoax.” But a bill that will if passed create confusion for voters and reject ballots for reasons now legal under law under the guise of ensuring voting integrity, that’s the real hoax. The Texas Attorney General’s website says that since 2005, the office has successfully prosecuted 534 offenses related to election fraud involving 155 persons. A tally of the number of votes cast in statewide elections over the same period totaled 83,933,740. Finding widespread voter fraud in Texas can possibly, if not rightfully, be called a witch hunt. I’d bet more than 534 people claim to have seen Bigfoot! Longstanding claims of voting improprieties were breathed new life by a Presidential candidate who lost the popular vote in the last two elections. They can be seen as the impetus for nearly 400 bills filed in state legislatures in 2021, including SB7, which was thwarted by my colleagues in the Texas House during the final hours of the 87th Regular Legislative Session. By the end of May, 14 states had passed new laws that place more restrictions on voters. During the pandemic, some Texas jurisdictions passed rules that helped voters feel safe, such as creating mobile or temporary voting locations and expanding provisions that allow curbside voting. SB7 and its Special Session successor will eliminate “drive through voting” by banning the use of “moveable” structures or tents or parking lots or garages as voting locations. No known reports indicate fraud. Voters who are mobility challenged are able under current state law, to vote from their cars or the vehicle they are riding in. The proposed legislation would allow only the voter or an accompanying child to remain inside the vehicle while their ballot is being cast. Even the driver, must get out. Over the years, civic-minded Texans have helped their neighbors,
including seniors and others who do not drive, by giving them a ride to polling places. Chu rches and other organizations across the country have helped get voters to the polls. SB7’s heir will discourage citizenship and kindness by forcing good neighbors to complete a form that must be submitted to election officials if they carry three or more people to a voting site. I’m glad that a provision in an early version of the elections bill that could have created chaos at voting sites by allowing poll watchers to record voters was removed. But the bill still gives poll watchers near unfettered ability to have too much of a presence at polling places, with only their pledge that they will not disrupt voting activities. The bill creates a Class B Misdemeanor for election workers who deny poll watchers free movement at a voting site. This week, reports emerged that two more bad policy choices will not be part of the new voting bill. One provision would have allowed a judge to overturn the results of an election based on assertions that the votes were illegally cast, without actually counting the votes. And bill supporters and the Lt. Governor say language that would have not opened polls on the last Sunday of early voting until 1:00 p.m. will not be included this time. Shouts raised the roof at the thought of limiting “Souls to the Polls” efforts historically supported by Black churches. But another part of the bill may likely remain. It calls for the Secretary of State to monitor county voter rolls to determine if the number of voters registered in a county exceeds the number of voters who are eligible to vote in that county. The problem is that from yearto-year, there is not an official instrument that tabulates how many persons are eligible to vote in a particular county. Officially, how many people moved to Dallas, Bexar, Harris or Travis or Tarrant counties last year? When the departing Secretary of State’s office said the 2020 Election was “smooth and secure” and turnout in Texas was higher than it had been since the 1992 Election, any talk of widespread voter fraud sounds suspicious, at least to me. God is good,” Snoop Dogg captioned Sunday’s post. “ T h a n k s for al l t he prayers 1 day at a time.” Snoop’s mom, Beverly Tate, is an author and evangelist who was born Beverly Tate in McComb, Mississippi, in 1951. Turns out Tommy is the heir to an ancient noble Japanese clan called the “Arashikage.” His family’s teachers, Hard Master (Iko Uwais, Mile 22) and Blind Master (Peter Mensah, TV’s Transformers Prime), and its head of security Akiko (Haruka Abe, Cruella) train the interloper to become a fierce warrior—physically, skillfully, spiritually and mentally. Why? They’ll need his help as Kenta is out to crush them. On so many levels, this chapter is far more intriguing than its G.I. Joe predecessors. Audiences, without prior knowledge of this crime/action/thriller/fantasy heritage, could easily think this is a stand-alone production, and in many ways it is. That’s
thanks to its judicious director (Robert Schwentke, Tattoo), imaginative writing team (Evan Spiliotopoulos, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse) and stellar cast and crew. Minutes after a weak opening generic backstory sequence, which establishes the root of the protagonist’s lifelong angst, the film takes off and individual elements shine. Schwentke has a firm grasp on the handsome style of the film, which becomes more evident as the story unfolds. The footage (cinematographer Bojan Bazelli, King of New York), sets and locations (production designers Alex Hammond and David Meyer; set decorator Sandy Walker, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) are stunning and impressive. Snake Eyes ...continued superb. The breakneck pacing (editor Stuart Levy clocks the length at two-hours, and oneminute) doesn’t give you time to flinch. A soaring musical score, especially with its incessant percussive drumbeats (Martin Todsharow), pulsates in the right places. All those tech achievements stoke the film with drama, intrigue and an artistry that go well beyond genre requirements. As the well-thought-out script evolves, Snake Eyes becomes a very complex man with dubious alliances that makes his character arc as unpredictable and as it is compelling. His bromance with Tommy is both loving, respectful and cunning: Tommy: “You saved my life. Why?” Snake Eyes: “I looked into your eyes, and I saw honor.” Conversely, the vitriol displayed by Kenta and Baroness (Úrsula Corberó), an agent for Cobra, is particularly venomous and duplicitous. For good measure, family dynamics pit the very ambitious Tommy against his clan’s conservative matriarch Himiko (Eri Ishida), and their conflicts add emotional standoffs and crises. Suspicion and flirtations between Snake Eyes and Akiko hint at discordance and romance. Akiko: “Want to know how I got my scar? It’s from the last man I trusted.” The pointed dialogue and other machinations—powerplays, deceptions, fluctuating allegiances and potential reconciliations— amass in a way that makes what’s on view mesmerizing even into the end credits (stay in your seats, a plot twist is revealed). Henry Golding has firmly established himself as a leading actor, the kind that generates
whispers about him being a James Bond candidate. In this instance, he carries the mantle of emotionally wounded and shortsighted combatant quite well. Well enough to want to see him in more Snake Eyes movies, with or without any connection to G.I. Joe. Andrew Koji, as Tommy, upstages Golding. Koji has a deeper presence, a more photogenic face, a gruffer gravely sounding voice, stronger stature and an undercurrent of bitterness that overshadows Snake Eyes’. The fact that he will morph into Storm Shadow should attract and retain a legion of comic-con fans. Samara Weaving as the hitwoman Scarlett, Ishida, Uwais and Abe also take their characters to places far beyond their initial scenes. And Peter Mensah, a Ghanaian actor, has the air, presence and physicality of a shaman. There are scenes in Tokyo that are reminiscent of Antoine Fuqua’s crime/thriller The Replacement Killers. There are times when the near perfectly choreographed action scenes make you wish the director, cinematographer, art director, production designer and stunt coordinator had opted for an even more artsy look. Visions and movements similar to the balletic images in director Yimou Zhang’s elegantly crafted act/adv/ dra House of Flying Daggers. The sheer artistry in this film is commendable and watching this brilliant Asian cast brings these characters to life is fascinating. In theaters starting July 23rd.
