ITWAS 46 YEARS AGOTHAT “THE BIGGESTCOWBOY bootsinthe world” stompedtheir wayinto SanAntonio
Thefour-storybootsculpturewascreated by TexasartistBob “Daddy-O”Wadein1979aspartofa Washington,D.C.,initiativecalledtheWashingtonProjectfor theArts. Wade’s public artexhibit wastitled “Study of GiantCowboyBoots.”
Wade,known foranuninhibited,whimsical style that oftenwas depicted in outsizesculpturesofTexas symbols, made thebootsout of mostly donatedmaterials, accordingto SanAntonio Express-News archives Coveredwithurethanefoamandpaintedtolooklikeostrichskin,thebootsweremoldedontoasteelframethat couldbedisassembledand putbacktogether.
ThecompanythatownedNorthStarMallboughtthe bootsfor $20,000, following abidding warwithother Texassites.The cost wouldbeabout $80,000 in today’s dollars

She’dgottena divorceand movedback to SanAntonio afterlivinginLos Angeles forfouryears.Paris foundherself missing thefriendsandcommunityshe’dbuiltand sawthe potentialfor connectionatthe table.
“You’vegot to talk to people to pass a dish,” Parissaid.

ForParis,who considersherself an introvert, thedinnerclubhas also opened herup. When hostingdinnerparties,she’s an active facilitator —bringingquieter people into thediscussion or rerouting theconversationwhenneeded.
WhiletheprojectstartedasawayforParis to create thecommunity shewas seeking, theimpactofthedinnerservicehasexpanded beyond that.Group chatsare createdbefore theguestsleave thetable.She still hangsout in groups shemet throughthe dinnerclub.
By creating aspace wherelike-minded peoplecanconnectandexplorenewpartsof thecity, Parisalsohopes to boostthe city’s pride.
As she’sthought abouthow to build dinnerservices, it’s expanded to hercontemplatingabout howcitiesare built.
“Wehavetofindawaytokeepcreatorsin SanAntoniotobuildtheculture,”Parissaid. “PlaceslikeAustin, Houston, Dallasdid not getthisway overnight.
“Wehavebrilliant mindsand concepts andcoolthingsout here.Maybe we are somebody to keep an eyeout for.” ★

Mexican beauty brand inspired by nopales
The plantthatinspiredSandraVelasquez’smodernMexican beauty andbodycarebrand Nopalera was always rightinfront of her.
Butitwasn’tuntil shewas in dire need joblesswithnosavings,studentloanandcredit card debt,all while beinga single momtoa13year-old —thatshe gotthe idea that hasexpanded into an upscalebeautybrand with a global presence
said.“Here’sthisplantI’veknownmywholelife thatIgrewupeating—thatliterallyisineveryone’sfront yard,backyard, side of thefreeway We take it forgranted.”
Itwasanobviouschoicetousethepadsof theprickly pear cactus,which is astaplein Mexicancuisine,asthe star ingredient in the beauty brand. It wassustainable,growing in abundancewithnoconcernsabout overfarming. It doesn’trequire aspecial climate andisdifficult to kill.
Butthe vegetable, full of vitamins andantioxidants,had yettobeunlockedbyother
brands.Whileitisn’tenvironmentallyrare,nopalesare still precious,Velasquez explained.

ForVelasquez,itwasessentialforNopalera to be apremium beauty brandthatcould be in thesamearena as otherluxurybeautycompanies.
“Ifyou thinkthatevery Mexicanproduct shouldbecheap,whatdoesthatsayaboutwhat youthinkaboutus?”Velasquezsaid.“Thatisliterally thefoundationthatthe wholebrand is built on —standingonyourworth.”
Velasquezstudied chemistryand built the brandforayearandhalfbeforelaunchingitin November 2020.Atthe time,Velasquez was creating allthe itemsherself from herhome. Initially,she launched abathset.Now,the brandhas expanded to includescent-forward body care with sultry andsmoky scents like DulcedeCuerpo.
In July,she movedher business, which hadbeenheadquartered in NewYork, to San Antonio. This wasanother simple decision forVelasquez
“Peoplejustget it.I feel understood,” she saidaboutSanAntonio.“Idon’tfeellikeIhave to explainmyself. Idon’t have to spellmylast name.Idon’thavetoexplainwhatmybrandis —everyonealreadyknows.Thatissucharelief.”
Beforebecomingabeautymogul,Velasquez wasa musician formanyyears in theband Pistolera.Velasquezsaidshe’sstillonstage,just in adifferent way.
“I approach things likeanartist,” shesaid. “WhenI go to make something, I’mtryingto make somethingnew.”
In 2026,Nopaleraisplanning to release scrubs in threenew scents.The brandcan be purchasedonlineatUltaorlocally at Rancho Diaz. ★

Helping Vets in the Workforce
After the military, Bryan Martinez turned hisjob into asecond calling
ornearly11years,Bryan Martinez has been an integral member of aMr. SparkyfranchiseinSanAntonio.Martinezworkedhis wayfromapprentice to technician to vice president. He creditshis success to discipline, accountabilityand thetraining he learnedwhenheservedmorethanfiveyearsin theU.S.Air Force.

Martinez,a security forces member,was deployed twiceinsupport of OperationEnduring Freedom to Bagram AirBaseinAfghanistan,once in2011andagainin2012.From2001to2014,1.9millionmilitarymembersweredeployedinsupportof
OperationEnduringFreedomandOperationIraqi Freedom
Martinez’s life changedonhis second deployment.His squadwas patrollingoutside thebase, checkingsecurityinanarmoredpersonnelcarrier when thegroundgaveawaybeneath thevehicle
Herolledintoa6-footditch,tearingtherotator cuffs in both shouldersand hisACL,repeating an injury from hisdaysplaying high school football. Martinez also suffereda traumaticbrain injury when hisheadslammedagainst thetruck’s bulletproof glass.
TheAir Forcereassigned theSan Antonionative to Germanyfor follow-up medicalappointments. Then he wasdeemed nondeployableand medicallydischargedatDyessAirForceBaseinAbilene.
“I couldn’t finish my duty Isigneduptodo,” Martinez,38,said.“That’sultimatelyhowmycareer ended.”
Martinez andhis family returned to SanAntonio.Readjustingtocivilianlifewashardfortheveteran whoplannedtomakethe militarya career Therewereappointments to help himcopewith PTSD from histourofduties. Hisfather-in-law, George Saldana, sawhim strugglingtofindhis placeinthe civilianworld andofferedhim ajob at hisMr. Sparky franchise.
Martinez startedworking on thecommercial side of thebusinesstohavetimetomeet hisappointments.Hemoved to theresidential sector, whichinvolvedservicingHVACsystems,plumbing andwater heaters.
Martinez took on learning theelectricaltrade as he didinthe AirForce.Hetappedintolessons learned,suchasattentiontodetailandbeingaware of hissurroundings. He foundpurpose beingable to servecustomers,justashehad in themilitary.
“IwasluckytofindthatwithMr.Sparky,”Martinezsaid. “Being able to serviceour customersand providetop-notchelectricalexperiencesandreally takecareofthem,thatwassuchablessingforme.”
Hismemorable outreach involved hisbrotherin-law,MarcusSaldana,whomhe’sknown since middleschool.MartinezhelpedSaldana,anAir Forceveteran,use logisticsskills he learnedinthe militaryatthecompany.Hesaidtheyofferveterans aplace wheretheyfeel safe andcan relate to other co-workers’militaryexperiences
“Itfills my heartand soul,” Martinez said.“Givingbacktoveteransjusthitsdifferently than anythingelsebecause it’s so closetomyheart.” ★

Growing up in Albuquerquethe sonofanorthopedicsurgeon, Kyle Altman always hadan interest in amedical career
“I wasnaturally drawntoorthopedics,but triedtokeep an open mind andexplore my options” he said,addingwitha laugh: “Infact, Idid everythingI couldtostayawayfromorthopedics.But Iguess Iloved it toomuch.”
Today, theorthopedicsurgeon specializes in hipand knee replacementswithSportsMedicineAssociates, whichhas sixlocations in theSan Antonioarea.
Before becoming adoctor, however, he wasanaccomplishedsoccerplayer, both in Albuquerqueand at Trinity University,where he wasa pre-med undergraduateand played on the school team
“I wanted to go somewherethat wouldfurther my academic ambitions butwhere Icould also play high-level soccer,”explained Altman. “Trinity checkedboththose boxes.”

“A lotofpeoplewho go into the fieldtendtohavea sports background,” he said.“They’refamiliarwithbiomechanics, theway thebodyworks.It’s kind of anatural segue. ”
Aftergetting hismedical degree, he joined Sports Medicine Associates in 2023,inpartbecause thegroup’s founder, Dave Schmidt, wasthe Trinity team doctor while he played there.
“I’llsee anywhere between 25 and35 people in clinic andthendotwo to five surgeries,”hesaid.

He also treats alot of patients with arthritisand says thebestway to avoid thecondition,oratleast reduce the pain,istostayactive.
“Exerciseisprobablythe best thing youcan do forthe long-termhealthof your joints andbones,” said Altman who, hasthree children, ages 7years to 20 months,withhis wife Hunter,a pediatrician.“People maythink rest is best,but it’s better to keep moving.”

“I’m really excitedfor that to roll out,” Balakumarsaid.
Seeing kids in bedconnected to thosekinds of machines andtubes is “one of thehardest things youcan see, ” shesaid— butinthose moments, she’s oftenthinkingabout theirlives outside thehospitalroom
Parentsoften decorate theirchildren’s roomswithpicturesfromwhen they were healthy, whichserve as a visual reminder of what theICU team is workingtoward.
“Let’s seehow we canget that child better, to getthatsmile back again, so they cangohomewiththeir family,” Balakumarsaid. “That’sthe onething that keepsmeand allofmyteammembers going, is workingtowardgetting that child home.” ★

Olivia knew this pain alltoo well.Asa momofthree,she’s been juggling summer activities,getting heryoungestoffto college, andkeeping hersmall business running. Plus,she’s been dealingwithpersistentpaininher left ankleand foot for awhile.
Herpodiatristdiagnosedher with posteriortibialtendon dysfunction, more commonly knownasflatfoot.Heprescribed over-the-counter anti-inflammatory meds,referredher to a physical therapist, andrecommended sheget an MRItorule outanythingmoreserious.Oliviafollowedhis advice on the first twobut worriedthe scan wasbeyondher budget.She’s not aloneinthatconcern:Fourin10U.S.adultshavedelayed or avoidedseeking medicalcarebecause of thecost, accordingto KFF, anonpartisan health policyresearchnonprofit.

Garzaconsulted with astrophysicist ChrisPackham,who teachesatthe University of TexasatSan Antonio, on thepiece.Itispartofthe city’s public artprogram overseen by theDepartmentofArts& Culture.
Thetitle of theinstallation comesfromPajalate, theCoahuiltecan language spoken by ancientpeople whooncecalledthisareahome.
