NEWSLETTER MAURO MURILLO was born in Coahuila, Mexico and moved to San Antonio, TX in 1995. During high school, he enjoyed the SaySí art program where he explored creating art in different mediums including graphite, charcoal, aluminum, paper maché, papel picado, and others. While Murillo was pursuing an Associates degree in Communication Design at San Antonio College, he began to shift his focus more toward the fine arts, especially because of a particular drawing class where he was inspired to consider art as a career. After graduating early 2020, his passion for art strengthened as he started painting with acrylics on canvas. Murillo had his first solo show, Personajes Mexicanos, in 2021. His work has been exhibited at UNAM San Antonio TX, Mexican Cultural Institute San Antonio TX, Instituto de Cultura Hispanica Corpus Christi TX, and The Union Houston,TX.

NEWSLETTER What inspired you to become an artist? I considered becoming a serious artist while attending San Antonio College. When I took a couple of drawing classes I realized that art is what I wanted to do. After graduating with an associates degree in Communication Design, I began to paint in large formats and created my first body of work called 'Personajes de México', which I exhibited in 2021. What medium(s) do you work with and why? I paint with acrylics and oils. I like acrylic paint because it dries quickly and encourages me to paint fast, creating this expressionist style. Oil paint dries slower, making it easier to blend colors. I decide on the medium depending on what I am trying to achieve in a painting. Can you talk about a piece or project that you are particularly proud of? I am proud of being part of the 2023 National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC) cohort of artists, art administrators and cultural workers. It was a two-month program culminating with a trip to Washington DC to meet with legislators and arts non-profit leaders. I am also proud of an inside mural I painted for YETI in their San Antonio store and painted over 60 collectable cups for them as well. What themes or ideas are you currently exploring in your work, and how do you hope to make an impact with your art? I am currently working on the next exhibition, which will be about figures of the Mexican Revolution. I am painting these figures by representing them like saints of the renaissance. This work will be focused on anatomy and value, while keeping an expressionist and loose approach.

Who are some of your artistic influences? I have been influenced by many artists throughout my life. When I was a boy I enjoyed watching Bob Ross and influenced me to create landscapes. As a teenager I was influenced by Japanese anime and comic book artists like Greg Capullo. I am still influenced by the work of Pablo Picasso, DaVinci, Michelangelo, Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoshka, Jenny Saville, Jorge Gonzalez Camarena and many, many more. What inspired you to pursue art as a profession in San Antonio, and how has living and working in this city influenced your creative process? Our Mexican Culture has a strong presence in San Antonio and it inspires me to keep painting these iconic figures. When people tell me that one of my paintings reminds them of their grandparents or a relative, it makes me smile because these figures also bring nostalgic memories to me. Connecting with others through art is a beautiful thing.
