“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100 (NIV)
Psalm 100 encourages us to “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.” One hundred years deserves joyful praise! As we remember all those who have come before us, we are energized to rejoice as we continue to look for what God has in store for us and the students we serve. We see God’s hand in the lives of the students who have moved on and those who are with us now. We are renewed for the future – trusting God’s faithful guidance as we pray and serve.
100 years – such a testimony to God’s faithfulness and the commitment of His people to service!
Serving with you,

Jan Cobb President
Our scholarship recipients have faced a variety of challenging circumstances including homelessness, foster care, inner city violence, the disability or death of a parent or sibling, and the sacrifices of full-time ministry. The generosity of Legacy League members and friends is making a tremendous difference in the lives of an ever-growing number of students.

“Being part of the Legacy League has been such a blessing. I’ve not only received financial support but also encouragement from people who genuinely care about students’ success and well-being. It’s inspiring to know there’s a community standing behind me, cheering me on and investing in my future. This has motivated me to work harder, give back and hopefully impact others the way the Legacy League has impacted me.”
-Legacy League scholarship recipient

In 1925, with the blessing of Howard College President Dr. John Dawson, 16 determined women gathered at Birmingham’s historic Tutwiler Hotel with a shared vision: to support the college through service and generous giving. One hundred years later, the ministry of the Legacy League continues to make life-changing impact.
Our 100th anniversary theme, “Remember, Rejoice, Renew,” and scripture, Psalm 100, call us to reflect with gratitude and look ahead with purpose. The psalm begins with an invitation: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:1-2 ESV). This spirit of glad-hearted service has shaped the organization’s mission from the very beginning.

10When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, 12be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Deuteronomy 6:10-12
The Legacy League’s roots can be traced to pre-Civil War efforts of Baptist women to support Howard College from its founding in 1841. In 1902, the Howard College Cooperative Association was established to “cooperate with the board of trustees and president of the college in raising funds for the endowment and better equipment of the university.” Successful projects carried out by this group and missionary societies of several denominations led to the formal founding of the Howard College Auxiliary by 16 women in 1925. The auxiliary supported Howard College, and later Samford University, by providing furnishings, landscaping and other important support, and meeting student needs as they arose. The organization’s scholarship endowment was created in 1988. In 2008, the organization’s focus became providing scholarships for students with significant financial need and challenging circumstances, now the primary mission. The name was changed to Legacy League in 2011.
Introduced at the 2011 Fall Luncheon, the original crest was unveiled when then President Penny Kimrey announced the change of the organization’s name from Samford University Auxiliary to Legacy League. The crest was updated in 2015 to its current appearance. Several elements of the crest are of symbolic importance: the lamp, scripture reference, oak leaves and overall acorn shape.
• The lamp, borrowed from the university seal, symbolizes the organization’s connection to Samford University and our shared purposed in lighting the lamp of knowledge through education.
• Deuteronomy 6:10-12, the Scripture reference on the crest, is a reminder that we are building on a strong foundation created by the work on many who came before us. Additionally, it symbolizes the organization’s desire to create a legacy of scholarships to benefit future generations.
• The acorn shape and oak leaves signify the tradition of the Sherman Oak and represent the unbroken chain of teaching and learning that began in 1841 with the founding of Howard College, now Samford University. Named in honor of the college’s first president, Samuel Sterling Sherman, the original oak stood on the East Lake campus. Saplings grown from acorns from the Sherman Oak were planted around the Lakeshore Drive campus, including in front of Sherman Hall.
The Legacy League’s bylaws are posted at samford.edu/legacyleague/about-us.
Legacy League membership is open to anyone who believes in our mission and wants to be part of our caring community. Previous affiliation with the university is not a requirement. A variety of annual and lifetime membership levels are available. Learn more at samford.edu/legacyleague/membership.

Established in 2007, the Lolla Wurtele Wright Award is presented annually to an outstanding member of the Legacy League. The awards honors the memory of Lolla Wright, who served Samford University graciously and faithfully as first lady and executive director of the organization for 25 years (1958-83). After Dr. Leslie Wright’s retirement as president, Mrs. Wright became executive director emerita of the auxiliary and continued with her heartfelt support until her death in 2006.
Mrs. Wright’s life was a shining beacon for others to follow. She frequently opened her home for events supporting athletic teams, student organizations and faculty groups, and particularly enjoyed being the caretaker for the university’s bulldog mascots. Mrs. Wright had a passion for getting to know students and contributing to their happiness.
The recipients of the Lolla Wurtele Wright Award share Mrs. Wright’s devotion to Samford and dedication to outstanding service through the Legacy League. The recipients of this prestigious award have made significant contributions to the organization, ultimately making a difference in the lives of students through scholarships.

In 1988 the Samford University Auxiliary, now Legacy League, established an endowment program to provide life-changing scholarships for students with financial need. To date the organization has awarded scholarships to over 225 students. Named scholarships provide an opportunity to honor or memorialize an individual or family while changing the lives of students who have faced monumental challenges. For further details about each named scholarship, visit samford.edu/legacyleague/scholarships or scan the QR code.
Brock Scholarship, est.

Margaret Pate Putman’s parents moved to Birmingham from Goodwater, Ala. with plans for their children to attend Howard College (now Samford University). For most of Margaret’s childhood, her family boarded Howard students. They attended Ruhama Baptist Church, then the “college church” for Howard students. At an early age, Margaret made a public profession of faith in Christ and regularly attended “Sunbeams” and Sunday school. When she established this scholarship, Margaret wrote: “I hope the small way I have been able to help some students will encourage and strengthen them to be fine Christian persons throughout their lives.”
The Samford Auxiliary membership named this scholarship to honor life member Cornelia Macfarlane Brock, who had declined any recognition during her lifetime. Born in 1905, Cornelia was a native of Fort Payne, Ala. She attended Huntington College and married Harry Brock in 1925. The couple moved to Gadsden, Ala., where they were active in First Baptist Church. Cornelia later moved to Birmingham to be near her two children, Harry Brock, Jr. and Ann Brock Hillhouse, and her grandchildren. She was dedicated to her family, church and community. The education of young church leaders was of great importance to her.

Ruhama Baptist Church was organized in 1819 by pioneer settlers in Ruhama Valley in the Territory of Alabama, an area now known as East Lake Community. When Howard College, now Samford University, relocated to East Lake in 1887, a strong relationship between the school and church was forged. Closely associated for 70 years, the two Baptist institutions nurtured each other and positively influenced generations of people. Ruhama Baptist Church merged with First Baptist Church of Irondale in 2001. As a legacy, the church made an endowment gift to Samford University to provide scholarships for worthy students.
Amelia Perry Apperson was born Jan. 16, 1895, in Stanton, Ala. She earned her teaching certificate from the University of Alabama, then taught in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1921, she married Charles Apperson and gave up her full-time teaching responsibilities to raise their 11 children. On her 100th birthday, Amelia’s children honored her with this scholarship. “If she were here today, I think she would say to the recipients of her scholarship, ‘Read, learn the meaning of words, and then use your education for God’s glory,’” shared her daughter, Lottie Apperson Jacks.

Julia Tarrant Barron (1805–90) was a wealthy, public-spirited widow residing in Marion, Ala., in the mid-1800s. She was one of the founders of Howard College (1841, now Samford University), Judson College (1838) and The Alabama Baptist (1843).
The Samford University Auxiliary named a scholarship in her honor for her faithful and generous support of Christian education.

Julia was inducted into Alabama’s Women’s Hall of Fame in 1991 for her lifetime impact. “It may be truthfully said that her purse was the Lord’s, and she held all that she possessed in trust,” said her pastor, William H. McIntosh.
Born in 1909, Elizabeth Shoemaker married Dan R. Hudson in 1934. They had one son, John Robert Hudson. The Hudsons’ generosity is evident at Mountain Brook Baptist Church and throughout the Birmingham community.

In 1998, the Samford Auxiliary established this scholarship in appreciation of Elizabeth’s support of student scholarships. At the time, Elouise Williams, then the auxiliary’s coordinator, said, “Are the sick healed? Is the cultural life of Birmingham enriched? Is the mission of the church expanded? Is the support of Christian higher education strengthened? With a resounding ‘YES,’ we thank people like Betty Shoemaker Hudson.”

Donor Martha Gaskins made this commitment to honor the staff and members of Huffman Baptist Church, as well as the Samford University faculty and students, and members and officers of the Samford Auxiliary. Martha was a dedicated public educator for 37 years, including 28 years as a classroom teacher or principal and nine on the Birmingham Board of Education. Her commitment to education is corollary to her service through the PTA, church and community and her motivation for creating this scholarship. She and her husband, Roy, had two children, Wanda and Glenn.

This scholarship was established by the Haas’ daughter, Marla Haas Corts, former first lady of Samford University, and her late husband, Thomas E. Corts, while he was president. Ruth Johnson Haas (1913–2000), the daughter of Swedish immigrants, was raised in Ashtabula, Ohio. Herman Haas (1908–95) grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania Dutch country. Ruth and Herman married in 1935 and had two children, Greg and Marla. “They were good, hardworking folks, devoted to family and the church, who provided well for their children, including a happy childhood and college educations,” Marla said.

Herself a scholarship winner, Lottie was honored with a scholarship in her name by her daughter Nancy and son-in-law, Harry B. “Buck” Brock III. The Brocks established this fund during Lottie’s term as the auxiliary’s president because of “her deep passion for the auxiliary and its mission.” Lottie attended Howard College (now Samford University) majoring in biology, then worked as a medical laboratory technician for more than 35 years. Determined to complete her degree, she later returned to Samford, graduating in May 2016 at the age of 85. Lottie and her late husband, William Russell Jacks, have four children.
The auxiliary established this scholarship in 2006 to honor Marla’s longtime service as the organization’s executive director and to serve as a perpetual reminder of her commitment to scholarship and the auxiliary. During her tenure, the organization’s emphasis changed to endowing scholarships, and its endowment surpassed $1 million. Marla served as the auxiliary’s executive director and Samford University’s first lady from 1983 to 2006, while her husband, Dr. Thomas E. Corts, served as president of the university. The Corts family includes two daughters, Jennifer and Rachel (Wachter), and son, Chris, and eight grandchildren.

Following Frances Slye’s death, this scholarship was established to honor Michael F. Anderson, husband of the Slyes’ only daughter, Anne, and father of their only grandchild, Kyle Evan Anderson. Michael served his country as a chief warrant officer III in Operation Desert Storm. A special operations helicopter pilot, he was killed during a rescue mission in Iraq. Rev. Slye, a 1975 Howard College alumnus and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary graduate, passed away August 19, 2024. He and Frances instilled in Anne their love for God, enthusiasm for discipleship and missions, and strong work ethic.

This scholarship was established to honor Elouise upon her retirement as the auxiliary’s coordinator. Before her lengthy service as coordinator, Elouise served as the organization’s president for four years. She referred to her tenure as “23 years of adventure in service, relationships and learning.” Elouise was a dedicated Legacy League member until her death in 2023. She and Harold, her husband, generously supported auxiliary scholarships and Samford University. They were named as the university’s first honorary alumni in 2004. The Williamses’ two children were both Samford graduates: Richard ’81 and Anna ’83, J.D. ’88.

This scholarship was established through the combined efforts of the auxiliary’s membership and a generous anonymous benefactor “because of a deep appreciation for the Sullivans” and in memory of his mother, “who taught him the significance of a generous spirit.” Pat, the 1971 Heisman Trophy winner, was Samford’s head football coach from 2007-14. Mitch Waters ‘09 said of Jean, “She (knew us) by name, made us her family. We were as much her boys as we were Coach Sullivan’s.” The Sullivans have three children: Kim Silliman, Kelly Pankey and Pat Sullivan. Coach Sullivan died in 2019.

Founded in 1974, the Big Oak Ranch is dedicated to giving abused, abandoned and neglected children a stable, loving Christian home and the opportunity to experience God’s grace. The ranch has been home to more than 2000 children since its founding by John Croyle and his wife, Tee. The auxiliary established this scholarship to help make it possible for high school graduates from the ranch to attend Samford. Since its creation, this scholarship has helped several Big Oak Ranch residents to experience the unique benefits of a Samford education and the support of the Legacy League.

Born Dec. 1, 1987, Caitlin was a source of pride and inspiration to her parents and all who knew her during a short but exciting life. Her parents, Brad and Kathy, saw Caitlin grow into a beautiful young woman inside and out before her death in 2007. A social work major at Baylor University, Caitlin wrote on her Freshman Leadership application that “If God brings me to it, He will bring me through it.” Her goal was to make a difference in peoples’ lives. The Creeds created this scholarship to honor Caitlin’s memory and make a difference in students’ lives.

Belva Dozier Owen dreamed of attending Howard College and serving in foreign missions. Though finances prevented the fulfillment of her educational dreams, Belva instilled in her daughters her love for God and education. When her husband abandoned her, Belva worked hard to provide for her children. Several generous scholarships enabled Karon, her oldest daughter, to attend Samford. Belva’s mission field came to her through her church, neighborhood and refugees. This scholarship recognizes not only Belva’s sacrifices to send her daughters to college, but the sacrifices made by other mothers committed to providing their children a college education.

This scholarship, dedicated to the memory of Ruth Edwards Merz (19192002), provides financial support in her honor. Ruth’s father died when she was two, leaving her mother with three children to support. So they would not lose their house, they took in boarders, cramming the family into one small room. Ruth was outgoing and excelled in school, graduating at 16. She met her future husband in high school and, after their wedding, worked so he could earn his college degree. He was the first of many she supported to earn a college education.

Focused on “MKs” (missionary kids), this scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in appreciation for the impact that Leslie had on the donor while a Samford student and beyond. After graduating from Samford, Leslie earned her M.D. from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her internship in internal medicine there. For decades Leslie has ministered to many, providing Hospice care to terminally ill women, a “home away from home” to college students, hospitality to Chinese delegates, food pantry help for the poor, sewing lessons, teaching Bible lessons and more.

A group of adult MKs—Samford graduates—introduced the idea of this scholarship, made the initial contributions and proposed naming it in honor of Bill and Audrey Cowley. It was established to help MKs (children of missionaries) attend Samford. Former career missionaries in Nigeria, the Cowleys provided surrogate parent home-awayfrom-home support for Samford MKs during the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Bill was a Samford faculty member, and Audrey was treasurer of national Woman’s Missionary Union. They passed away in 2023 and 2020, respectively. The Cowleys’ two daughters and their spouses, all Samford graduates, were MKs.

This scholarship honors those who have made a difference in the lives of others and commemorates the organization’s name change from Samford University Auxiliary to Legacy League in 2011. Since Howard College’s founding in 1841, women have played an important role in the institution’s growth and development. That role was formalized in 1902 when the Howard College Cooperative Association was founded. Successful projects carried out by missionary societies of several denominations created the momentum for the founding of the Howard College Auxiliary in 1925. In 1988 the auxiliary established a scholarship endowment, which continues to create new legacies in students’ lives.
This scholarship was established to honor Dr. Gerald and Mrs. Martha Lou Fagan Walker and their families who attended Howard College/ Samford University. More than 20 individuals from the Fagan and Walker families attended the school, spanning three generations. The Walkers’ only daughter, Cynthia Walker WattsBarrineau, is a 1979 alumna. Cynthia’s daughter Daria Parker Ward and Daria’s late husband, Stephen Henry Wilson, graduated in 1998. With a desire to continue to be a part of the excellence in education provided by Samford University, the family established this scholarship to help students pursuing ministry as their life vocation.

This scholarship helps make a Samford University education available for students who have been adopted or in foster care and who otherwise could not afford the experience. An instrument for monumental change in the lives of students with challenging family backgrounds, it provides them with hope, encouragement and the opportunity for a brighter future. This scholarship recognizes the legacy created in the lives of people who are adopted or received foster care and those who love them. It was created through the generous contributions of over 240 Legacy League members and friends and proceeds from 2012–13 fundraising events.

League Vision Scholarship, est. 2014
This scholarship was established through the gifts of more than 200 individuals and businesses who share the organization’s vision for “making a difference in the lives of students through need-based scholarships.” Commitment to that vision was evident in the tireless work of over 200 volunteers who planned and executed the year’s successful fundraisers, including the Scholarship Luncheon featuring Jennifer Rothschild and Scholarship Gala Celebration featuring Christian illusionist Curt Anderson. Those events and the 2013-14 programs featured visionary speakers who are being used by the Lord to do His work in a variety of unique ways.

The Gradys’ commitment to education endures, thanks to their estate gift which continues their legacy of life-changing work. For decades, Myra and Odell, both graduates of Howard College (now Samford University), made a difference to countless young people in Alabama classrooms. They both earned master’s degrees from the University of Alabama, where Myra also earned her Doctor of Education. An active member of the auxiliary, Myra taught at the elementary, high school and college levels. Odell, a WWII veteran, was a teacher and then an elementary school principal.

In 2015, Samford University celebrated a milestone —100 years of teacher education. Recognizing that the tutelage and care of teachers profoundly impacts their students’ lives, the Legacy League created the Education Centennial Scholarship. This scholarship helps students with a calling to teach obtain the training they need to educate the next generation. It was established through the generous contributions of more than 300 donors and proceeds from 2014-15 events. The online scholarship description includes the list of the individuals and businesses who originally contributed to this scholarship and those their gifts honored.
The Legacy League established this scholarship in grateful appreciation for those who helped ensure that the university survived and thrived since its founding as Howard College in Marion, Ala. in 1841. One hundred seventy-five years and two locations later, Samford University in Homewood, Ala., is home to more than 6,000 students and a nationally recognized institution. This scholarship honors the sacrifices God’s people have made through the institution’s history, helping it survive two fires, war and economic depression, and making it accessible to those who could otherwise not afford it.

As a surprise in celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary, Ann’s husband, Ron, established this scholarship with a gift from Ann’s parents, Albert B. and Evelyn Strunk Keeney. It was created to perpetuate Ann’s love of Samford, books, children and education. After graduating from UAB, Ann taught kindergarten. Her commitment to education is evident in her decades of involvement in Samford and the Legacy League. A Challenge member, Ann held several leadership roles, including president; she received the Lolla Wright Award in 2013. Ann and Ron were honored with the Orlean Beeson Award in 2022.
In celebration of 100 years of Samford Arts and the impact of its programs, the Legacy League collaborated with the School of the Arts to create this scholarship. Samford Arts combines a rich tradition with innovative programs, shaping students to influence the world and share the love of Christ through their God-given talents. This scholarship was created through the generous contributions of more than 300 donors and proceeds from 2015-16 events, including a Centennial Birthday Concert and a special performance of On the Town
Out of deep gratitude and admiration for her parents, Jennifer (Smith) Whitaker established this scholarship to continue their ministry in the lives of young people who want to manifest Christ in the workplace. Byron and Sarah (Fagan) Smith were college sweethearts who spent their 65 years of marriage in service. “My parents were lifelong partners in ministry,” said Jennifer. Byron, a Howard College graduate, was born in Greenville, Ala., grew up in Montgomery and began preaching at 17 years old. Sarah, a Pell City, Ala. native, faithfully served alongside him after they met at Howard.

Carolyn Plummer Drennen ‘59 can trace God’s hand through her circumstances. This scholarship manifests her commitment to help others as she has been helped. “I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I had and for the people who gave me a chance,” she reflected when creating this scholarship. A native of Grove Hill, Ala., Carolyn came from a family who faced significant challenges. Her father spent many years in a nursing home and died when Carolyn was a teenager. A generous scholarship, combined with her campus jobs, made her goal of attending Samford become a reality.

Carolyn Hooper Bryant, B.S. ‘71 established this scholarship in memory of her maternal grandmother, Lizzie Campbell Brown, who firmly believed, “The one thing that no one can take away from you is your education.” Lizzie and her husband, Johnnie, were hard-working, “salt-of the-earth” folks, devoted to their God, family, community and education. Though Lizzie had only a sixth-grade education, she took a keen interest in Carolyn’s school and extracurricular activities. When Carolyn was at Samford, Lizzie sent her a monthly gift and a letter to encourage her. After completing her master’s, Carolyn taught for nearly three decades.

Paula joined the Legacy League in 2009 following an invitation from Elouise Williams. Believing she was to be a “doer of the Word and not merely a hearer” (James 1:22), Paula saw an opportunity to serve, taking interest in the organization’s scholarship recipients. She has lovingly served in multiple roles, including president. A single mother for 12 years, Paula understood the struggles of paying for college. God’s provision for her daughters fueled her desire to help aspiring students who need a blessing from an organization like the Legacy League to help make their dreams a reality.

A member since 2000, Anne is a faithful supporter and advocate for the Legacy League. In establishing this scholarship, Anne’s husband, Brad, described her as his “quiet partner at Samford, his home away from home for more than 60 years.” This scholarship is evidence of their love for Samford, deep admiration for the Westmorelands and desire to change lives through the Legacy League. Anne and Brad attended college on scholarships and enjoy “paying forward” the blessings they received. Anne’s commitment to education spans her entire adult life, including a 35-year career in Hoover City Schools.

This scholarship was established to honor Jeanna for 15 years of outstanding service as executive director and to continue the important work to which she dedicated her life. During her tenure from 2006-2021 Jeanna effectively led the Legacy League through incredible growth, increasing the endowment by nearly $4 million, adding 27 new endowed scholarships and involving over 350 active volunteers annually. Her vision, dedication and commitment brought to the organization a mission sharply focused on providing transformational scholarships for students with significant financial need and challenging circumstances. This scholarship ensures that her life-changing impact continues.

Robert R. Meyer, born in 1882, was a man who had great vision and a deep commitment to his community. A successful hotel owner, he established the Robert R. Meyer Foundation in 1942 to benefit the inhabitants of Birmingham and its vicinity. It was funded in the 1950s with $2.5 million, and in 2020 the foundation was valued at approximately $47 million. To date, over $70 million has been granted for charitable purposes, including this scholarship. Thanks to Mr. Meyer’s foresight and generosity, his impact continues to be felt years beyond his passing.

Born May 6, 1985, Brandon was a gentle giant whose short life was full of youthful, contagious energy. He worried far more about the welfare and happiness of others than he did about himself. He had a close relationship with his cousin Chandler Smith, a Samford student. Bonded as brothers, they possessed an irrepressible urge to better themselves and those around them. Brandon passed away far too early in 2021, leaving behind a large family. In honor of his benevolence, passion for learning and relationship with Chandler, they established this scholarship to help underserved and first-generation college students.

Committed to allow the Lord to use the loss of their son to help others “pursue dreams, goals and opportunities,” Cindy ’69 and Ron ‘70 established this scholarship in memory of Ronnie Mims, Jr., whom they adopted at three weeks old. Cindy described him as “an encourager with a tender heart.” A gifted athlete, Ronnie served in the Air Force for six years before he died unexpectedly on March 1, 2021. This scholarship, Ron said, helps others “to have the opportunity to have long-term success that we missed with Ronnie.”
Given in gratitude for the Lord’s generosity and the Legacy League’s mission, this scholarship was established to provide transformational educational experiences for students who have faced tremendous challenges. Parents of two alumnae, Chizuru and Jeff Elliott have seen the impact of a Samford education on their daughters, Stephanie Walter ’09 and Christina Douglas ’10. A Challenge member of the Legacy League, Chizuru has faithfully supported the organization’s ministry. The family views this scholarship as a tool for ministry and prays its recipients will view the scholarship as the Lord’s provision for them.

Established to honor Julie for her service to Samford University as first lady and executive director of Legacy League, this scholarship supports her calling to help students with challenging life circumstances. A wise and effective leader, Julie serves faithfully, humbly and tirelessly. She has demonstrated a lifelong passion for learning and Christ-centered education. Julie and her husband, President Beck A. Taylor, welcome thousands of guests to the president’s home each year and support students and faculty at various campus events. Julie is also active in several community organizations. The Taylors have three children: Zach, Lauren and Chloe.

Julia Evangeline Thames, affectionately known as “Vangie,” was a woman of deep faith, lover of children and gifted storyteller. Many were blessed by her humble, fun-loving, generous and joyful spirit. Vangie was a Challenge member of the Legacy League who believed deeply in its mission to change lives through scholarships. This scholarship was established through a generous provision she made through her IRA, ensuring that her support for Legacy League’s mission would extend beyond her lifetime. Thanks to her forethought and commitment, this endowment will provide transformational scholarships to students who have faced tremendous obstacles.

In 2022 Samford University celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing, founded as Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1922 to meet a desperate need for skilled practitioners. The school was renamed Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing in 1968, moved to Samford University in 1973 and became Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing in 2020. This scholarship commemorates the school’s founding, celebrates its tremendous impact, and helps educate aspiring nursing students who have significant financial need and challenging life circumstances.
Desiring to help others obtain a nursing education as she did, Anna Belle, at age 95, established this scholarship. Nursing school had changed her life; she believed this scholarship would be life-altering and endow a passion for future ministers of excellent patient care. She and her husband, Emmett, were “a medical couple,” who viewed health care as their calling. They lived by the motto “our life is for living; our life is for giving” and encouraged their children, Gay and Galen, to seek purpose for their lives and a passion for service.

The Scrogginses’ lives were completely devoted to serving the Lord by serving His churches. They married in 1935 shortly after Raymond was ordained to the gospel ministry in Alexander City. He graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) with honors in 1939, then attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Bennie Sue attended Howard College, later graduating from Southern Union College. The Scrogginses served in numerous churches in Alabama. Raymond also served the Alabama Baptist State Convention. The ministry of their lives continues through this scholarship, initiated by their daughters, Myra and Bernella.

Inspired by their faith and desiring to make transformational impact on the lives of students who have faced monumental challenges, anonymous donors established this scholarship. Its name references Psalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Through this scholarship, they aim to support Samford’s enduring mission and ensure its positive impact on future generations, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and generosity.
A faithful and involved member since 2014, Harriet has held numerous leadership roles, including president from 2017-19. She graduated from the University of Alabama, earning her master’s from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Harriet’s career in nutrition and dietetics spanned four decades. Her husband, Jim, and their daughter, Mary Beth, share her commitment to and affection for Samford. As PARCA’s founding executive director, Jim worked on Samford’s campus for more than two decades. Mary Beth is a 2017 graduate of Samford’s nurse anesthesia program. This scholarship continues the family’s commitment to support students with significant financial need and challenging life circumstances.

Named for Boaz and Ruth from The Bible, this scholarship was created to assist students who have “fallen through the cracks.” Boaz used his position and resources to provide redemption and meet tangible needs for Ruth, Naomi and others. Similarly, this donor’s awareness of opportunities he and others have received -- good schools, safe neighborhoods and good jobs -- motivated his commitment to help aspiring students without such opportunities. His prayer is that the Lord will use this scholarship, as God used Boaz’s generosity, to transform lives through the opportunity of a college education.
As a former recipient of a Legacy League scholarship (class of 2015), Brennen is grateful for the encouragement and provision he received through it in his time at Samford. He and his wife, Kaitlin, are especially grateful for the opportunity to now extend the blessing of a scholarship to other students in return. In the words of 2 Corinthians 9:11, they believe they have been “enriched in order to give” and pray that this scholarship ultimately “produces thanksgiving to the Giver of all good things.”

Joe & Rebecca Haskins Scholarship, est. 2025
As parents of a 2019 graduate who participated in University Fellows, the Haskinses have seen firsthand the impact of a Samford University education. That perspective, along with Rebecca’s experience of paying her way through college, inspired Joe and Rebecca to create this scholarship. With hearts eager to help others, they pray it will bless students who have faced tremendous challenges.

Lily Glass Woodall Scholarship, est. 2025
Luke 12:48
From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
The Bugg family views “to whom much is given, much is expected” (Luke 12:48) as a call to steward well the gifts God has bestowed on them. Dedicated to serving “the least of these,” they established this scholarship to help aspiring students with significant financial need to pursue their educational dreams. Enabling these students to experience Samford University and Legacy League’s support is, the Buggs believe, a life-changing investment in these young people, the community and the future.
Grateful for parents who raised them to know the Lord and provided them a college education, Byron and Kathryn Woodruff established this scholarship in memory and honor of their parents, Anita and Phil Woodruff and Connie and Lamar Miller. Desiring to bless others as they were blessed and believing that a Samford education is transformative as students chart their path in life, the Woodruffs hope this scholarship also helps affirm and grow the faith of its recipients. Kathryn, a Samford graduate, has been active in Legacy League since 2009, serving in several roles, including president and newsletter chair, and Byron has been a faithful supporter.

Nelldeane Price, a longtime Legacy League member, established this scholarship in memory of her dear friend Lily Glass Woodall, who “always had a soft spot in her heart” for those in need. It was created to help others who, like Lily’s brother-in-law, have experienced challenging circumstances and need financial assistance in order to gain a university education. Lily’s sister, Catherine, was married to Rev. Arthur Hudson Hicks, who was raised at Alabama Baptist Children’s Home in Troy, Alabama. Rev. Hicks graduated from Howard College, now Samford University, and served for many years at First Baptist Church in Morristown, Tennessee.
