Have you ever seen an angel?

At Christmastime, we see angels everywhere—on holiday cards, in movies and plays, and in Nativity scenes.

In the Bible, a woman named Mary saw an angel in real life. It appeared to her with a message that surprised her— she was going to have a baby! She thought it was impossible, but the angel assured her that anything is possible with God.

Mary became the mother of a very special baby. Can you guess who it was?

An Angel Appears to Mary

Ayoung woman named Mary was alone in her room. Suddenly she saw an angel right in front of her. The angel said, “Greetings! The Lord has blessed you and He is with you.”

Mary was confused, but the angel told her not to be afraid because God was pleased with her. He chose her. “You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. Name the baby Jesus. He will be great, and people will call Him the Son of the Most High.”

“How is this possible?” Mary asked.

The angel replied, “God will make it possible. God can do all things.”

Mary said, “I am the servant of the Lord. Let this happen to me as you say!” Then the angel went away.

Afterward, Mary went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. When Mary arrived, Elizabeth cried out in a loud voice, “God has blessed you more than any other woman. And God has blessed the baby which you will give birth to. You are the mother of my Lord. You are blessed because you believed what the Lord said to you would really happen.”

Cross out every third letter to reveal Mary’s response to the angel's message. Check your answer by reading Luke 1:47-48 (ICB).

Hi kids!

When you have good news, how do you tell someone? Maybe you use a phone, the internet or write a note to share your news. In some movies and TV shows, birds are used to send messages to people far away, such as Harry Potter’s messenger owls.

God once had the biggest news of all— that Jesus would soon be born. God did not have a phone or the internet, and He did not send owls. Instead, He sent angels to deliver special messages to earth. Read this issue of Just for Kids to find out what message Mary received.

Angel Visits

Mary

Ayoung woman named Mary lived in a town called Nazareth. One day, an angel named Gabriel appeared to Mary. The angel told her that she was going to have a baby boy, and this baby would be God’s son.

At first, Mary was surprised and confused. But the angel told her not to worry, that God would make it happen. The baby would be called Jesus.

Luke 1:26-45

Mary believed the angel’s message and said, “I am the servant of the Lord. Let this happen to me as you say!”

After the angel’s visit, Mary went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. “God has blessed you,” Elizabeth said to her. “And God has blessed the baby which you will give birth to.”

Did You Know?

Angels are a very important part of the Christmas story. In Luke 1, an angel named Gabriel appears to Mary to tell her she will give birth to Jesus. Later, in Luke 2, another angel visits a group of shepherds to tell them that Jesus had been born. Many people put an angel on top of their Christmas tree to represent the angels in the Bible.

Hi kids!

At Christmas, we remember the greatest story ever told—the birth of Jesus! A long time ago in Bethlehem, God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world. He was born in a stable, and the angels sang, shepherds visited and Three Wise Men followed a star, all to celebrate the best gift ever given.

Christmas is an exciting time of year, filled with bright decorations, presents and twinkling lights. But it’s also a time to remember God’s love for us and to share that love with others. How will you show God’s love this Christmas?

I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

The Christmas Story

At that time, the emperor of Rome made a law. Everyone had to go to their hometown.

Joseph and his fiancée, Mary, went to his hometown: Bethlehem. Mary was expecting a baby. While they were there, the baby was born. They called their son Jesus. Mary wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger. They were staying in a stable because there was no room for them at the inn.

There were shepherds watching their sheep in a field nearby. An angel appeared to them. The angel said, “I bring you great news! Today your Saviour has been born in the town of Bethlehem.” Then a large group of angels appeared. They praised God, saying, “Glory to God in heaven! May His peace be with His people on earth.”

So the shepherds went quickly to Bethlehem and found Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The shepherds told them what the angels had said about this child. Everyone was amazed.

Then the shepherds went back to their sheep, praising God and thanking Him for everything that they had seen and heard.

Hi kids!

After Jesus was born, a group of Wise Men came to visit Him (see Matthew 2). They were not from Israel, where Jesus lived. They lived far away. But they saw a star in the sky. The star told them that the King of the Jews had been born, and they travelled to find Him.

When the Wise Men found Jesus, they bowed down and worshipped Him. They brought Him three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

We often picture the Wise Men at the manger with Mary and Joseph, right after Jesus was born. But Bible experts believe that they may have visited the family as much as two years later. So while it may seem like Christmas was a one-day event, people were still celebrating for a long time after. May we never stop celebrating Jesus, our Saviour.
