Hi kids!

Have you ever slept with a nightlight on? Sometimes the dark can be scary, so we use lamps or nightlights to show the way and keep us from being afraid. In the Bible, Jesus is compared to a great light.

In our world, we face darkness sometimes. I don’t mean nighttime, but the bad things that can cause pain, suffering and fear. That is why God sent Jesus to earth to save us and protect us. When He died on the cross and then rose again three days later, He defeated all evil and darkness.

On Easter, we celebrate the amazing sacrifice that Jesus made for us, because He loves us.

Jesus Comes Back to Life!

WJohn 20

hen Jesus was here on earth, He did many wonderful things. He healed people who were sick. He gave food to people who were hungry. And He taught people to love each other, as He loved them. Jesus always put others first.

But not everyone loved Jesus. Some of the leaders in Israel, where Jesus lived, had Him killed. His body was laid in a tomb and a big stone was rolled in front of it, so no one could get in.

When Jesus had been there for three days, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. The stone had been moved and the body of Jesus was gone!

Mary was very upset. She was at the tomb crying when a man appeared to her. He asked her, “Why are you crying?”

Mary thought the man was a gardener, so she asked, “Where did you put the man who was in this tomb?

Tell me and I will go and get Him.”

The man Mary saw was not a gardener—it was Jesus! He said to her, “Mary,” and she recognized Him.

Jesus said to her, “Go tell My disciples that I am alive.”

And Mary ran to the disciples with the news.

Hi kids!

As the weather gets warmer, one of my favourite things to do is go for long walks. When I walk through the neighbourhood there’s plenty to see—houses, trees, flower gardens, mailboxes and neighbours with their dogs. But can you imagine running into Jesus? What would you do?

The Bible tells us that, after Jesus died, everyone was talking about it. Some people were confused and didn’t understand why He died. One day, as two men walked into a town called Emmaus, Jesus suddenly appeared to them. Read the story to find out what He told them.

Hi kids,

Forty days after Jesus rose from the dead, He went back to heaven. His disciples watched Him go up until He disappeared behind a cloud. Before Jesus left, He gave His disciples a very important task. He told them, “You must go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). But how? How could they keep going without Jesus to guide them? It seemed like an impossible task.

Jesus knew that they would be worried. That’s why He told them that they would not be alone. He said, “You can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end” (Matthew 28:20).

After He returned to heaven, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with His disciples. You’ll learn more about the Holy Spirit in next week’s issue of Just for Kids. Your friend, Abby

What does “Ascension” mean?

In the Bible, “Ascension” refers to when Jesus returned to heaven. You can read all about it in this week’s Bible story.

“Ascension” comes from the word “ascend,” which is a verb (an action word) meaning to rise or climb. Can you think of some other things that “ascend” through the air?

After Jesus died and rose again, He appeared to His disciples over a period of 40 days.

One day Jesus was eating with them. He gave them a command. “Do not leave Jerusalem,” He said. “In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

He continued, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will tell people about Me in Jerusalem. You will even tell other people about Me from one end of the earth to the other.”

After Jesus said this, He was taken up to heaven. The disciples watched until a cloud hid Him from their sight.

While He was going up, they kept on looking at the sky. Suddenly two men dressed in white clothing stood beside them. “Why do you stand here looking at the sky?” they asked. “Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. But He will come back in the same way you saw Him go.”

Hi kids,

Did you know that the ocean is so huge and deep that scientists have only explored about 20 percent of it? That means 80 percent of the ocean is still a mystery. There are places no one has ever seen and creatures that we’ve never discovered, but they’re still down there swimming around!

There are many things in the world that we can’t see, touch or explore. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t real. Some things are true even when they are invisible.

As Christians, we believe in God even though we can’t see Him. That’s called “faith.” Jesus was once a person who walked on earth, but now He lives in heaven. Even though we can’t see Him, we can still talk to Him when we pray, read stories about Him in the Bible, and feel His love in our hearts.

So even if humans never discover everything that lies at the bottom of the ocean, we know the most important truth—that God is real. He knows us and loves us.

Ocean Facts

The ocean covers about 71 percent of the earth’s surface.

It has a big impact on weather, temperature and the world’s food chain.

Scientists have studied a greater percentage of the moon’s surface than they have studied the ocean.

Just like on land, there are mountains and canyons deep under water.

Scientists know of around 226,000 ocean species and estimate hundreds of thousands are still to be discovered.

God Sends His Spirit

After Jesus went back to heaven, His disciples were all together in Jerusalem. Without warning, there was a sound like a strong wind—it filled the whole building. Then, the disciples saw what looked like fire on top of their heads, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They started telling people the good news about Jesus.

Many people came when they heard the sound, and some thought the disciples were acting funny. “What does this mean?” they asked.

One disciple, Peter, stood up and told them all about Jesus—His life, His death and His Resurrection—and he urged them to become followers of Jesus, too. “Long ago God planned that Jesus would be handed over to you,” he explained. “All of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then your sins will be forgiven.”

That day, about 3,000 people became Christians!

What Is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God’s Spirit. It is something that we cannot see, but we know is real because of what God does in our hearts and lives, the same way we can’t see wind, but we can feel when it blows. When we feel scared, sad or lonely, the Holy Spirit gives us peace. When we face challenges, the Holy Spirit gives us courage to overcome them.
