What do you think it means to be brave? Maybe you think about your favourite superheroes, such as Spider-Man or Superman. They have to be very brave to help save people and fight off villains. Or you might think about someone in your own life who shows bravery, or people in your community, such as firefighters. As Christians, God wants us to be brave and have courage to do what is right, even if we are afraid. If we trust in Him, God will always be there to help us. This week in Just for Kids, you’ll read about Caleb and Joshua, who listened to God and showed courage when others did not.
Joshua and Caleb
Numbers 13-14
G
od told Moses to send 12 men to explore new land, called Canaan. Two of these men were Joshua and Caleb. Moses said to them, “Is the land good or bad? Are the people who live there strong or weak? Do they have fruit trees and good soil? While you’re there, bring back some fruit!” The men went through the desert and into Canaan to see what it was like, and after 40 days, they returned to Moses, bringing with them grapes, figs and pomegranates. “There is plenty of milk, honey and fruit,” they reported. “But the people who live there are powerful. The cities have high walls around them and are very large.” Caleb said, “We should go take the land. We can do it!” But the other men were afraid. They didn’t think they could do it and they did not understand why God would tell them to go there. Joshua and Caleb reminded them, “The Lord will lead us there. He is with us.” But the other men did not trust God. So, God said to them, “If you trust in Me, I will be with you. If you do not trust in Me, you will not enter the new land.” And because Caleb and Joshua trusted the Lord, they were the only two who entered the new land.
