‘I’ve started so I’ll finish’ – the famous words of the chairman of Mastermind who has been interrupted by the two minute bell when he is in the middle of asking the last question. He won’t suddenly stop. Yet many Christians may be tempted to suddenly stop and give up rather than persevering in the ministry that God has called them to. There are various reasons for this – spiritual dullness, physical tiredness, too many other demands, persistent opposition…. Paul prays that the Lord will direct the hearts (of those so tempted) in two directions. First , into God’s love….. Secondly, into Christ’s perseverance….’ ( Michael Cole – Living Lights) It comes as no surprise that first we are directed to God’s love – a place where we can dwell and be reminded of who we are in him beloved and cherished. A place where we can bring our emotions, however raw. Our anxiety, doubts, those who rub us up the wrong way! Those who openly oppose us. The things that feel impossible…. From the safety of that love – the completeness and fullness of it – we are then directed to Christ’s perseverance. One not possible without the other.
