If you could turn into an animal for just one day, which animal would you choose to become? Perhaps you’d want to be a bird, so that you could look down at your home from high up in the sky. You might like to become a shark, so that you could explore the depths of the ocean. Or maybe you’d want to become the greatest, most impressive creature in the whole animal kingdom – a beaver! OK, you might not agree with us that beavers are quite as exciting as we’ve made them out to be –but an animal-loving teen called Mabel is absolutely obsessed with them! Mabel’s discovered that a construction company is planning to destroy an animal habitat, and she wants to do anything she possibly can to help protect the local wildlife. So when Mabel discovers that her scientist teachers have learned how to ‘hop’ a human mind into a robot animal, Mabel can’t resist the opportunity to save the day. She hops into a robot beaver body and suddenly she can talk to animals as if she’s one herself – she looks and sounds just like a beaver! Now she’s ready to protect the local animals from the construction company and to become the cutest, tiniest and fluffiest hero in the world!

You can watch ‘Hoppers’ in cinemas now. The film is rated PG, which stands for parental guidance. Parents or carers can read more about this rating at bbfc.co.uk before deciding if it’s suitable for their family.

Mabel gets the opportunity to hop into an animal’s head and understand what they’re thinking! Wouldn’t that be amazing? Actually, sometimes I’d love to be able to hop inside some human minds too, especially if it’s someone that I think needs help, but I’m not sure what to do.

God loves it when we look after other people. In fact, Jesus said that the two most important things we can do are love God and love others. Sometimes the people that need the most help don’t ask. For example, you might have a friend who’s being bullied but hasn’t told anyone. Because we can’t hop into other people’s minds and see what they’re thinking, it’s important to ask them if they’re OK and be good listeners. If we do, we might discover that there’s something they’re anxious or worried about – and then hopefully we can help to make things better!

No Need to Worry

Afew weeks ago, I had to drive during a heavy irainstorm. The sky was dark, the motorway was covered in water, and for a moment, it felt like the car was drifting. I was scared, so I did the only thing I knew to do – I prayed. Thankfully, I made it to my destination safely.

In this week’s Bible cartoon, the disciples faced a storm far worse than just heavy rain. As the wind blew, waves crashed into their boat and filled it with water. Even though some of the disciples were experienced fishermen, they were truly terrified and thought they might drown.

Read the comment below about how we can show kindness to others

But do you know who wasn’t afraid? Jesus. While the storm raged, he was sound asleep! Even when the disciples woke him up in a panic, Jesus remained completely calm. He stood up, told the wind and waves to be still and immediately everything became quiet.

This miracle shows us who Jesus really is. He has power over everything – even nature! This means that we can trust him because he’s in complete control.

Read the comment to the right about how Jesus gives us his peace

Sometimes our lives can feel stormy too. Maybe we feel worried about school, friendships, family problems or something we can’t control. But this story reminds us that Jesus is in the boat with us. Even when life feels out of control, he’s not worried. He is powerful, loving and able to bring peace into our hearts.

So the next time you face a tough situation, remember that Jesus cares about you and he’s with you. Take time to pray and let his peace fill your heart.

Peace Prayer

When life feels hard, Jesus doesn’t want us to panic or worry. Instead, he invites us to share how we’re feeling and promises to give us his peace (John 17:27). You can use the space below to write or draw a prayer telling Jesus what’s on your mind. Ask him to be with you, to help you and to give you his peace.

Jesus Brings Calm

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Amazing Love

What’s the best example of how to love someone?

A letter written by a man called John gave a brilliant answer. This was a letter that was sent to a church of struggling Christians, and it reminded them of the amazing love that God showed them. In fact, God loves us all (including these Christians) so much that Jesus died for us, so that we could join God’s family. So John wanted to encourage these Christians to remember what Jesus had done for them, and to also show love to one another – just like Jesus had shown love to them! There were people in this church who were teaching things that weren’t true. They were even saying that Jesus hadn’t come to Earth to rescue us from being in trouble with God. John told the church to ignore these people – and to never forget the powerful love of Jesus (who is God)!

Editorial Assistant

Hello! I’m Jacob, I’m 26 years old and I’m an editorial assistant. That’s a fancy way of saying that I write for a magazine. In fact, I reckon there’s a massive possibility you’re holding that magazine right now – because I work for Kids Alive!

There are lots of pages in Kids Alive!, so I’m always writing about plenty of different things. A normal day might look like writing about a fab film that’s coming out or learning about an exciting topic for KA! World. I might read a book in the Bible or test a wordsearch for Giggle in the Middle!

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, so I really love that I get to write every single day. However, the absolute best thing about my job is that I get to tell our readers (including you, holding this issue) all about Jesus! If you’d like to become a writer, you don’t need to wait until your hair is going grey to start writing! Write stories, songs, poems, comic books or plays – whatever excites you. Keep going, because you’ll only get better and better the more that you create. Maybe one day you’ll be writing about working for Kids Alive!, just like me!

Picture this – you discover an egg while you’re out on a walk. This egg is unlike any you’ve ever seen before, because it’s as red as a ladybird! It starts to crack open. You wonder what creature might emerge from the shell – perhaps a tiny dragon or a giant insect. What you discover is even more unexpected – lots of slime, and the parts to make one of the coolest toy cars you can possibly imagine! We’re being silly, of course, because you’d never find an egg quite like this one in the wild. However, you might be shocked to discover that this egg does exist in toy shops! Motor Mutants are mystery eggs which are packed with more than 15 unique surprises, including all the parts needed to build a Motor Mutant vehicle, as well as plenty of slime. With lots of vehicles to collect, we reckon you’ll feel excited every time you crack open a Motor Mutant egg!

MAKE A VOLCANO

Warning: This experiment is ridiculously messy, so you’ll definitely want to do it outside!

To celebrate British Science Week (which began yesterday – 6 March), why not grab a grown-up and give this science experiment a try? You’ll be making your own exploding volcano!

WHAT YOU NEED

Jar (an old jam jar or mason jar). Baking tray. Tinfoil. Small bowl. Spoon. 1 tablespoon of baking soda. 1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid. 2 tablespoons of water. A small cup filled with white vinegar. 1 tablespoon of red food colouring. Grown-up to help.

SCRUNCH, SCRUNCH

METHOD

Put your jar onto your baking tray. Then take some tinfoil and scrunch it around your jar to create the sides of your volcano. You want the sides to slope down so that your jar looks like a real volcano! Hint – you’ll need a lot of tinfoil!

Mix the baking soda and washing-up liquid in the small bowl. Then add the water and mix that in too! Pour this mixture into your volcano. Put the red food colouring into the small cup filled with vinegar and mix them together with a spoon.

Pour your vinegar mixture into your volcano. Watch as it erupts, just like a real volcano, and oozes a liquid that looks like lava! You’ll want to stand back from your volcano as it explodes, so that you don’t get messy.

Try this experiment again, but with different amounts of baking soda and vinegar! Changing the amounts that you use will also change your volcano eruption.

WHAT’S THE POINT?

Although the eruption in this experiment isn’t actually like the eruption of a real volcano, it does teach us a really fab lesson! When different chemicals are mixed together, they can react to each other, which means that a new chemical or gas is created. This is called a chemical reaction. In our experiment, we mixed vinegar and baking soda, which created a gas called carbon dioxide!

International Women’s Day

Are there women in your life who’ve inspired you to be a better person? Perhaps it’s a parent or carer who shows you so much love that you can’t help but be thankful. Maybe it’s a fantastic teacher who’s always working hard to help you to learn amazing new things. Or it might be someone at your church who’s always encouraging you.

All the women that you’re thinking of right now have done (and are still doing) brilliant things, and we believe they deserve celebrating. That’s why we’re so excited that it’s International Women’s Day tomorrow (8 March)!

Amazing Achievements

International Women’s Day (which is also known as IWD) takes place every year and has done since 1911. It’s a day all about recognising the magnificent achievements of women throughout history. Marvellous women have made spectacular scientific discoveries, created awesome art and made brilliant changes to our society – so IWD is a fab opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’!

Everyone’s Equal

You might be reading this and wondering why we’re just focusing on women. That’s a great question, especially because plenty of men have done fantastic things too!

However, throughout history, women haven’t always been treated well. Groups such as the Suffragettes had to fight for women to be treated the same as men, and it was only in 1918 that women were given the right to vote in elections in the UK!

Stop Sexism

There’s still more that can be done to make sure that men and women are being treated equally. Even in the UK, many women experience sexism, which means that they’re treated differently because of their gender!

That’s one of the many reasons why we think IWD is so important. We want to show all our readers (yes, you) that women are fantastic, and that the sky’s the limit for what girls and women can do!

Give to Gain

The theme of this year’s IWD is Give to Gain. This is all about asking people to consider what they can give to make sure that women and men are treated equally. This might look like giving respect to the women in our lives or even giving money to a good cause.

One way that we can join in with the celebrations this year is by giving some of our time to learn about fab women throughout history. Here are some we’re really inspired by…

Mary Seacole was a nurse from Jamaica, who brilliantly looked after wounded soldiers.

Emmeline Pankhurst was a member of the Suffragettes and played a massive role in getting women the right to vote in the UK.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving monarch in British history – she ruled the UK for more than 70 years.

Malala Yousafzai stood up to a group that wanted to treat women badly. Even though they hurt her, she hasn’t given up on doing what’s right!

Wonderful Women

We started this article by asking you to think of a few inspiring women in your life. Why not write down their names or draw them in the space below?

Your Turn

For each of the women that you’ve just thought of, can you come up with a way that you could celebrate them today? You could…

Make cards to give to them, with special messages about how important they are to you. Bake sweet treats for them to enjoy – most people appreciate a good cake! Spend more time talking to them – ask them to tell you stories about their lives!

Let’s be inspired by the amazing women in our lives this IWD!

Emmeline
